The Man Who Proved Meaning Is Stronger Than SufferingIn the darkest chapter of human history, when hope seemed like a luxury few could afford, one man discovered a truth so powerful that it would outlive the horrors around him.His name was Viktor Frankl.Frankl was an Austrian neurologist and psychiatrist. In 1942, he was arrested by the Nazis and sent to a concentration camp. Over the next several years, he endured four different camps, including Auschwitz. He lost his parents, his brother, and his pregnant wife. Everything he owned—his career, his manuscript, his freedom—was taken from him.By any external measure, his life had been stripped of meaning. But here's where the story turns. While imprisoned, Frankl noticed something remarkable.People were experiencing the same starvation, brutality, and despair—yet some survived psychologically, while others gave up long before their bodies failed. The difference wasn't strength. It wasn't intelligence. It wasn't luck.It was meaning.Frankl observed that prisoners who could anchor themselves to a future purpose—a loved one waiting for them, work they still hoped to complete, or a reason to endure one more day—were far more likely to survive. Meaning, he realized, was not a luxury. It was a survival tool. One night, freezing and exhausted, Frankl imagined himself standing in a lecture hall after the war, teaching students about the psychology of the concentration camps—explaining how humans can endure unimaginable suffering if they understand why they are suffering. That imagined future kept him alive. After the war, Frankl returned to Vienna. He rewrote the manuscript that had been taken from him in the camps and published a book that would go on to change millions of lives: Man's Search for Meaning. It has since sold over 16 million copies and is considered one of the most influential books of the 20th century.Frankl didn't claim suffering was good.He didn't romanticize pain.Instead, he offered this quiet, powerful truth:“Everything can be taken from a person but one thing: the freedom to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances.”He went on to develop logotherapy, a form of psychotherapy centered on helping people discover meaning in their lives—not by eliminating hardship, but by transforming it.Frankl lived to be 92 years old.The man who lost nearly everything proved something extraordinary:

Debt's Grip: What Consumer Bankruptcy Reveals About Financial Risk in America

    Consumer Finance Monitor

On this episode of the Ballard Spahr Consumer Finance Monitor Podcast, we examine consumer debt and bankruptcy through the lens of Debt's Grip: Risk and Consumer Bankruptcy (University of California Press, 2025), by Pamela Foohey, Robert M. Lawless, and Deborah Thorne. Based on decades of research from the Consumer Bankruptcy Project, the nation's most comprehensive study of bankruptcy filers, Debt's Grip goes beyond aggregate data to document the lived experience of financial distress. The book shows how illness, job loss, aging, family structure, debt collection, and racial inequality converge to push households toward bankruptcy and what that reveals about how financial risk is allocated in the U.S. economy. Rather than treating bankruptcy as a personal failure, the authors demonstrate how policy choices over time shifted economic risk from institutions to individuals, leaving many households one unexpected expense away from crisis. Those risks fall unevenly, with Black families, single mothers, and older Americans disproportionately affected. The Authors Pamela Foohey, Allen Post Professor of Law, University of Georgia School of Law, is a principal investigator with the Consumer Bankruptcy Project and a leading scholar on bankruptcy and financial distress. Robert M. Lawless, Max L. Rowe Professor of Law, University of Illinois College of Law, is a nationally recognized empirical scholar of bankruptcy and consumer finance and a principal investigator of the Consumer Bankruptcy Project. Deborah Thorne, Professor of Sociology at the University of Idaho, brings a critical sociological lens, foregrounding the voices and experiences of bankruptcy filers. She also is a principal investigator of the Consumer Bankruptcy Project. Podcast Highlights In the episode, we discuss: ·        Why people actually file for bankruptcy ·        The debts most likely to lead to financial collapse ·        How households struggle to stay afloat before filing ·        The role of debt collection and litigation ·        How people come to see bankruptcy as a solution ·        Policy reforms that could reduce reliance on credit during hardship Key Takeaways ·        Bankruptcy is rarely about irresponsibility. It is often the endpoint of systemic risk-shifting. ·        Financial distress is structurally unequal. Race, age, gender, and health matter. ·        Filers exhaust alternatives before filing. Bankruptcy reflects resilience under pressure, not moral hazard. ·        Policy choices matter. Stronger safety nets and a more humane bankruptcy system can reduce financial harm. Conclusion Debt's Grip offers a rigorous, data-driven, and deeply human account of consumer bankruptcy in America. It challenges entrenched myths and provides valuable insight for policymakers, regulators, and industry participants alike. We thank Professors Foohey, Lawless, and Thorne for joining the podcast and for their important contribution to the field. Consumer Finance Monitor is hosted by Alan Kaplinsky, Senior Counsel at Ballard Spahr, and the founder and former chair of the firm's Consumer Financial Services Group. We encourage listeners to subscribe to the podcast on their preferred platform for weekly insights into developments in the consumer finance industry.

You all have been moms a long, long time, and I am a newer mom. My first child, now age 3, was born with a disability…and I just can't decide if I should have more kids or not. How did you decide?”In this conversation, Jessica Patay, Susanna Peace Lovell, and Dr. Zoe Shaw respond with honesty, compassion, and deep respect for how complex this decision can be. They talk about the emotional weight of choice through the lens of their own experience, the role of grief and hope, and how different phases of parenting call for different questions. Rather than offering a one-size-fits-all answer, they explore how to listen to your values, your capacity, and your support system- while giving yourself permission to take your time and trust that there is no “right” answer, only the one that is right for you and your family.Keep the questions coming—we're here to support you. Why do some people feel “easy” to talk to—while others constantly frustrate us? In this episode of Healthy Mind, Healthy Life, host Yusuf sits down with Marita Littauer Tedder to unpack how personality wiring shapes communication, conflict, and connection. This conversation is for anyone feeling stuck in recurring misunderstandings at home or work. Marita shares her simple color-based personality framework, how “good intentions” can still miss the mark, and the practical shift that changes relationships fastest: learning to identify someone's type and meet their emotional needs with maturity and care. About the Guest: Marita Littauer Tedder is the author of 20+ books, including the long-standing bestseller Wired That Way. She teaches how understanding personality differences can improve communication, reduce conflict, and strengthen relationships. Key Takeaways: Stop assuming care equals “communicating like me”—personality differences change what support looks like. Use personality awareness to separate “lazy or rude” labels from what's actually happening. Notice visible clues (voice, space, organization, body language) to identify someone's style. Reduce clashes by choosing strengths over weaknesses—growth is a decision. Improve one strained relationship by meeting the other person's emotional needs consistently. In teams, shared personality language can prevent misreading tone and intent. How often do you walk away from an argument feeling exhausted and misunderstood? Most of us go into an argument wanting to win. But trying to convince someone that you are right and they are wrong will leave you feeling drained. It will likely damage your relationship. Fortunately, you can turn a battle into a productive conversation with just a few phrases. Today, I'm sharing three simple sentences that can stop a conflict in its tracks. Whether you're arguing with your spouse, or you're sensing the tension at work, these three sentences can de-escalate things while also preserving your relationship. Some of the things I talk about are: What "emotional flooding" is and why it shuts down the logical part of your brain How your brain's "angry memories" can derail a conversation The first sentence that forces you to pause and truly listen Why validating someone's feelings doesn't mean you agree with them The science behind how feeling understood calms the nervous system One courageous sentence that breaks the blame game and invites accountability How to use these three sentences together to turn conflict into resolution Subscribe to Mentally Stronger Premium for exclusive content like weekly bonus episodes, mental strength challenges, and office hours with me. Noem, where the state is trying to convince Judge Katherine Menendez to order DHS out of Minneapolis. Their Tenth Amendment argument got a big boost from Attorney General Pam Bondi, who actually sent Governor Walz a letter offering to pull back ICE's goons if the state would surrender its legal rights. Then we'll discuss Minnesota's lawsuit to preserve the evidence from the murder of Alex Pretti. The FBI says they've got it locked down, but Judge Eric Tostrud isn't so sure. Finally we've got a deep dive into the DOJ's effort to turn a protest at a church into a criminal conspiracy to oppress Christians.Show Links:Minnesota v. Most practice owners assume culture problems show up loud — missed numbers, complaints, chaos. But what if the real danger shows up when everything looks successful? In this PPOClub Workshop interview, Adam Robin sits down with April Atchison, CCC-SLP, to unpack a real-life leadership story that every growing practice owner needs to hear. April shares how her multi-location practice appeared stable and thriving — strong revenue, expanding staff, leadership in place, and real work-life balance — right up until subtle cultural cracks began to surface. What followed was one of the most difficult seasons of her career: recognizing leadership misalignment, addressing cultural drift head-on, and ultimately losing four long-term providers — including a clinical director. Instead of avoiding the storm, April chose decisive leadership, values-based clarity, and fast action to protect the future of her organization. This conversation goes far beyond theory. It's a behind-the-scenes look at what actually happens when an owner chooses culture over comfort — and how doing so can unlock stronger teams, higher ownership, and renewed momentum. In this episode, you'll learn:The quiet warning signs of culture breakdown most owners overlookWhy high productivity can hide serious leadership misalignmentHow to run clarity and alignment conversations without fearWhen acting fast protects your best team members — not just the businessWhy losing people can sometimes strengthen culture and performanceHow proactive recruiting creates leverage before you need itWhat decisive leadership looks like when the stakes are highHow rebuilding after disruption leads to stronger ownership and accountabilityIf you've ever felt uneasy despite “good numbers,” delayed a hard conversation because things looked fine, or wondered whether holding the line on values is worth the risk — this episode will give you clarity, confidence, and a leadership framework you can apply immediately.

Today we’re wrapping up our One Word 2026 series with the final two invitations: enthusiastic and trusting. I wanted this whole month to feel unhurried—like space to look back on 2025 with gratitude, and then ask God, “How do You want to grow me in 2026?” And here’s what I’ve realized: enthusiasm isn’t something we manufacture by willpower. Real, lasting enthusiasm comes from being filled with God—and I love that the word itself traces back to that idea. If you’ve felt tired, distracted, discouraged, or even a little apathetic, I’m inviting you to consider what it would look like to be ardently alive, fueled by the Spirit. Then we talk about trust—because so many of us are carrying unknowns, losses, or things we can’t control. Trust is choosing to rely on God’s character when the outcome isn’t clear. We’ll look at Zacchaeus (Luke 19), the centurion (Matthew 8), and we’ll end with a reminder that God’s holiness means He is truly worthy of our trust. What We Cover: Discover what “enthusiastic” originally meant—not just high energy, but being “in God” and Spirit-filled. Identify the real enemy of enthusiasm: indifference and apathy that grows when we’re overwhelmed and disconnected from God’s strength. Learn how spiritual enthusiasm shows up in real life through Zacchaeus: curiosity, bold response, generosity, and immediate heart-change in Jesus’ presence. Understand trust as steady reliance on God’s character, not on what you can control, predict, or prove. Be invited to name your modern “chariots and horses”—the things you’re tempted to rely on for security (money, approval, control, success, relationships, etc.). See what extraordinary faith looks like in the centurion: trusting Jesus’ authority without needing visible proof. Walk away with two simple affirmations to practice daily if either word becomes your focus for 2026. Divorce doesn't usually happen overnight — it's the result of small, ignored issues that pile up over time. In this episode of The Coffee Breakups, two recently married men sit down for an honest, practical conversation about how to prevent divorce before it starts. Drawing from real-life experience, research-backed insights, and hard conversations many couples avoid, we break down 10 actionable ways to build a stronger, healthier marriage. We discuss why marriages should be treated like a living system, not a one-time promise, how to communicate through conflict without damaging the relationship, and why financial alignment is one of the biggest predictors of marital success or failure. From weekly relationship check-ins and learning how to fight productively, to setting boundaries with family, protecting emotional and physical intimacy, and growing together instead of apart, this episode offers tools couples can use immediately. The conversation also dives into real-world challenges like balancing marriage after having kids, navigating outside influences from family and friends, avoiding financial secrecy, and why therapy should be used as maintenance — not a last resort. Whether you're newly married, engaged, or in a long-term relationship, this episode provides grounded marriage advice focused on prevention, communication, trust, and long-term partnership. If you're looking for honest relationship advice, ways to avoid divorce, or practical strategies to strengthen your marriage, this episode is for you.

Crises don't just knock out power—they unravel the safeguards that keep predators at bay. We dig into how traffickers exploit natural disasters, pandemics, and even major events by stepping into system failures with promises of food, shelter, and work that morph into coercion and control. From labor trafficking in post-hurricane rebuilds to targeted online recruitment of displaced single mothers, we connect the dots between vulnerability, policy loopholes, and criminal opportunity. Our guest, Benjamin Greer, a trafficking subject-matter expert who trains law enforcement and advises a state threat assessment center, breaks down real-world case studies and the modalities behind them: forced labor disguised as reconstruction, illicit adoption pipelines after the Haiti earthquake, and the way suspended wage protections can trigger a “gold rush” of poorly monitored contracts. We talk frankly about data gaps around big sporting events, why preparedness still matters, and how to turn these high-attention moments into training, service mapping, and smarter plans. We also shift to a public health lens. Pandemic closures revealed new disruption tools—like utility shutoffs and health code enforcement—that pushed illicit businesses out of the shadows. Then we widen the circle: code enforcement, utility workers, delivery drivers, rideshare drivers, shelter intake teams, and building inspectors can all be first identifiers with the right signals and anonymous reporting paths. In court, we unpack why expert witnesses on trauma and coercive control help juries make sense of texts, timelines, and victim behavior that seem contradictory but align with science. Finally, we go after the motive: money. Stronger fines, meaningful restitution, and modern asset forfeiture that targets the instrumentalities of coercion—homes, vehicles, farms, business premises—can make exploitation a losing proposition. Pair that with multidisciplinary task forces, shared intel platforms, and survivor-centered services, and communities can close the space traffickers rely on.

In this episode of Run the Riot, David sits down with Katie Gunvalson, an ultrarunner known less for traditional races and more for her relentless pursuit of Fastest Known Time (FKT) efforts. Katie shares her journey from road marathons to multi-day ultrarunning challenges that test not just fitness, but resilience, problem-solving, and mental toughness. Katie opens up about repeatedly falling short on major FKT attempts — including the Pacific Crest Trail and the Arizona Trail — and how those setbacks nearly convinced her to quit. Instead, she chose to keep showing up, learning, and refining her approach. That persistence paid off with a breakthrough performance on the Oregon Coast Trail, followed by a gritty, emotional FKT on the Ouachita Trail, where she battled exhaustion, poor visibility, fueling issues, and long nights alone in the woods. Throughout the conversation, Katie explains why FKTs appeal to her more than ultra racing, how thru-hiking skills have made her a stronger ultrarunner, and why embracing discomfort is essential for growth. This episode is a powerful reminder that success in ultrarunning — and in life — often comes only after repeated failure. Whether you're an aspiring ultrarunner, an ultra racing veteran, or someone struggling to stay resilient after setbacks, Katie's story will resonate deeply. Key Topics Covered: Transitioning from road running to ultrarunning Why FKTs demand a different skill set than ultra racing Learning to manage failure and repeated setbacks Mental strategies for multi-day ultrarunning Fueling, sleep deprivation, and problem-solving on long efforts Why not giving up ultimately leads to breakthroughs Show notes: http://www.theriot.run/katieg

How often do you find yourself replaying a conversation in your head over and over? Or maybe you get caught in a spiral of imagining every possible worst-case scenario. You are definitely not alone—we all ruminate sometimes. But overthinking wastes your time and drains your mental strength. Fortunately, you don't have to let your brain keep spiraling down an unhelpful path. Today, I'm sharing three simple words that will empower you to break the mental spiral so you don't stay stuck in your head. Some of the things I talk about are: Why thinking longer and harder about a problem actually creates tunnel vision The real root cause of overthinking (it boils down to one specific feeling) The exact 3-word phrase that stops a mental spiral in its tracks How to use the "Choose Your Adventure" mindset to take control of your life Why talking to yourself in the second person leads to better decisions A simple 3-step strategy to move from autopilot to action today Subscribe to Mentally Stronger Premium for exclusive content like weekly bonus episodes, mental strength challenges, and office hours with me. Today's guest is Martin Bingisser. Martin is the founder of HMMR Media, one of the most trusted independent voices in throws and track & field education. A former competitive hammer thrower, Martin blends firsthand experience with deep historical and technical insight to analyze training methods, athlete development, and coaching culture. Through articles, videos, and interviews, his work bridges elite practice and practical coaching, earning him respect from coaches and performance professionals around the world. In a world of rapid-information delivery and short attention spans, the wisdom of master coaches is becoming increasingly rare. Martin has spent substantial time with two legends in the coaching world, Anatoliy Bondarchuk and Vern Gambetta. Spending time discussing the work of the past, and wisdom through the present is a critical practice in forming an effective coaching viewpoint. On today's episode I chat with Martin in a wide-ranging conversation in coaching lessons on efficiency, adaptability, and performing under pressure (two throws, no warmups, huge crowds). We transition into Bondarchuk's training philosophy: exercise classification, consistency, “strength” as sport-specific force production, and why weight-room PRs can distract from performance. The episode closes with motor-learning insights on rhythm, holistic cues, and how Vern Gambetta's “general” work complements specificity. Stronger eccentric abilities allow athletes to tolerate higher forces with less breakdown. Use controlled eccentric work to improve robustness without chasing constant intensity. 15:40 – Isometrics depend on intent, not just position Holding a position is not enough to drive adaptation. Martin emphasizes producing force into the immovable position to create meaningful stimulus. Cue effort and intent during isometrics instead of passively holding time. 24:30 – Tendon stiffness supports speed and efficiency Tendons transmit force, they do not just store it. Training should respect gradual loading to avoid disrupting tendon health. Elastic qualities improve when stiffness and timing are trained together. 33:50 – Fatigue management shapes training quality Not all fatigue is productive. Martin highlights watching bar speed, coordination, and effort quality to guide decisions. End sets when movement quality degrades rather than chasing prescribed numbers. 42:15 – Match training tools to the desired adaptation Eccentrics, isometrics, and dynamics all serve different purposes. Martin stresses selecting methods based on the adaptation you want, not trends. Blend methods thoughtfully instead of stacking stressors blindly. 51:20 – Daily readiness should influence loading Athletes do not arrive the same every day. Use simple readiness cues like bar speed and coordination to adjust training. Flexibility in programming helps preserve long term progress. 1:00:10 – Durability is built over time, not rushed Long term development requires patience and consistency. Martin reinforces gradual progression to protect connective tissue. not short term peaks. Quotes from Martin Bingisser “Eccentric strength is what allows athletes to absorb and redirect force safely.” “An isometric only works if there is intent behind it.” “Tendons are not passive structures, they are active contributors to performance.” “Fatigue is not the enemy, but unmanaged fatigue is.” “You have to choose training tools based on what you want to adapt.” “Readiness is not about feelings, it is about what you observe.” “Durability comes from respecting time and progression.” About Martin Bingisser Martin Bingisser is the founder of HMMR Media, one of the most respected independent platforms covering throws, strength training, and track & field performance. A former competitive hammer thrower, Martin combines firsthand athletic experience with a sharp analytical eye to break down training theory, competition trends, and athlete development across all levels of the sport. Through HMMR Media, he produces in-depth articles, interviews, videos, and educational resources that bridge the gap between elite coaching practice and accessible learning. Caitlin has spent years helping individuals and couples better understand desire, connection, and the often-unspoken issues that quietly erode relationships over time. We discussed how communication breaks down, why people struggle to ask for what they want, and how unspoken expectations erode connection over time. We also talk about common misconceptions around sex, the real value of intimacy in long-term relationships, and what actually helps couples reconnect—not in theory, but in practice. This conversation isn't about shock value or trends; it's about understanding ourselves better, communicating more clearly, and building relationships that don't slowly decay in silence. Do you ever feel like you don't have a reason to get out of bed? Or maybe you feel lonely, even when you're in a room full of people? If you've ever wondered what it truly means to feel valued and important, this episode is for you. My guest is Jennifer Wallace, a journalist and the author of Mattering. She explains that mattering is a fundamental human need that comes right after food and shelter. When we feel like we matter, we thrive. But when that need goes unmet, we can become anxious, depressed, or angry. Fortunately, we can all do things that remind us that we matter. Some of the things we discuss are: The difference between mattering, belonging, and purpose Why being needed isn't the same as mattering How to feel like you matter without chasing achievement and recognition The one question to ask yourself every morning to prove to yourself that you matter How to rebuild your sense of mattering after a major life transition like a divorce, job loss, or relocation A simple formula for finding a sense of mattering by adding value to the world How to handle people who act out because they feel like they don't matter Subscribe to Mentally Stronger Premium for exclusive content like weekly bonus episodes, mental strength challenges, and office hours with me.
