In Episode 26, Keith and Shawnn bring two fresh takes that question long-standing assumptions in the world of pro wrestling. One revisits a bold exit from the 1980s, the other reimagines what it means to win the Royal Rumble. Both takes are sure to spark conversation. Shit-Take #1 (Shawn): "Tom Zenk did the right thing by walking out on Vince McMahon in 1987." Shawn argues that Tom Zenk's decision to leave the WWF during a promising run as part of The Can-Am Connection wasn't a misstep — it was a principled stand. This take explores the importance of self-worth, business disagreements behind the scenes, and why Zenk's choice might have been more forward-thinking than most give him credit for. Shit-Take #2 (Keith): "The Royal Rumble winner should be able to challenge for any title, not just the world title." Keith proposes expanding the stakes of the Royal Rumble. Instead of locking the winner into a world title match at WrestleMania, this take suggests giving them the freedom to challenge for any championship — whether it's the Intercontinental, U.S., or even tag team gold. The idea reframes the Rumble as a more open-ended path to WrestleMania.
We took a week off from the main show, and you know what that means: We're keeping you busy with some older Between the Sheets Patreon content that we've now made available for free. This time, we decided to assemble the entire “FUCK SABU!” trilogy (originally Patreon episodes #43-#45), covering Sabu's wild 1995, into one file for everyone to check out as a taste of what our Patreon-only deep dives are like. This is a great example, too, as we notice some very interesting things that the newsletters didn't pick up on at the time, like Chris Benoit's surprisingly obvious involvement in orchestrating the whole scenario.Want more content like this? Then sign up for the $5.00/month ($50.40/year if paid annually upfront) tier on our Patreon page and check out the back catalog that spans almost 9 years. This month, for August, the deep dive that we've started on is more 1995 content, covering Bill Watts' brief stint booking the WWF. Also, don't forget: From this point forward, regardless of if we're doing a month-long deep-dive or a smattering of smaller topics, we now release weekly Patreon content, with the segments of the month-long deep dives getting dropped each week as we record them.Anyway, we hope you enjoy these shows, and now, here are the original show descriptions:Part 1:Since April is the 25th anniversary of Sabu being fired from ECW, we decided it was the perfect opportunity to take a deep dive looking at everything that happened surrounding that very memorable event. So that brings us to this month's special, part one of what should be at least two episodes looking at Sabu's 1995, from his signing with NJPW to his indie schedule to his troubles with ECW, climaxing with Sabu double booking himself the night of ECW's big Three-Way Dance card. How did Sabu end up booked in NJPW the same night as the ECW show on late notice, why didn't he just cancel one of the bookings, and how did the situation devolve from there? We look at all of this in-depth, as it was covered in the newsletters, where both Sabu and Paul Heyman were commenting in detail on the record. All that and much more, including Chris Benoit's apparent major role in the Sabu/ECW schism, the greatness of Murder Inc./Wolf Army in 1995 NJPW, Sabu getting maced while doing a run-in for Circle City Wrestling, Chris Zavisa as Sabu's house organ, the proliferation of "Best of Sabu" videotapes, the reemergence of Dennis Coralluzzo in Sabu's career, and much more. This is a GREAT show, with a *lot* of fascinating stuff that's never talked about. Here's looking forward to part two!Part 2:We're back to pick up where we left off in our journey through Sabu's 1995, starting a few weeks after his firing from ECW over the "FUCK SABU!" no-show, as he starts talking to WCW and wins the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship from Koji Kanemoto at the Fukuoka Dome. Things quickly take a turn, though, as Sabu *throws down the title while cutting a promo about how he's a heavyweight*, NJPW tries to pretend it never happened, Sabu drops the belt at the next major show, Sabu becomes one of the anchors of Kevin Sullivan's plan to build "two WCWs" for the Monday Nitro launch, and much more happens as we close out the show just before Nitro launches. But the real meat of this show is in the forgotten Observer report, in black and white and plain English, that Sabu and Paul Heyman came to a secret agreement on an ECW return months before the actual return happened, and how Taz must have been privy to it given his career prospects at the time. All that and much more on another fascinating chapter in the "FUCK SABU!" saga!Part 3:We're back to pick up where we left off in our journey through Sabu's 1995, finishing up the series as we cover the launch of WCW Monday Nitro through the release of the 1995 Wrestling Observer Newsletter Awards in January 1996. Topics include how quickly Sabu's WCW run fell apart, the strange six month gap where Sabu stops teaming with the rest of Masahiro Chono's Okami Gundan/Murder Inc. stable in NJPW, Sabu scrambling for ideas to make him a pushed heavyweight in WCW like bringing in The Sheik's old United States Championship belt, The Sheik becoming Sabu's agent, Sabu returning to Dennis Coralluzzo's NWA New Jersey, Sabu becoming a transitional UWA World Junior Light Heavyweight Champion, Konnan trying to court Sabu for AAA, Sabu returning to ECW the same day he worked for Dennis, a labyrinthian web of conflicting stories from Sabu and Heyman about how they worked out the return, Sabu “officially” being fired from WCW on their hotline, the WWF's efforts to get Sabu for the 1996 Royal Rumble, and MUCH more. This is a fantastic end to the series and we hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed recording it.Timestamps:0:09:00 December 1994-January 19950:40:11 February-March 19951:09:52 Week of April 3 & Week of April 10, 19952:04:29 Week of April 17, 19952:27:03 April-May 19953:14:04 June 19953:33:51 July 19954:02:51 August 19954:36:30 September 19955:19:37 October 19955:55:23 November 19956:43:38 December 1995 and beyondTo support the show and get access to exclusive rewards like special members-only monthly themed shows, go to our Patreon page at Patreon.com/BetweenTheSheets and become an ongoing Patron.

Send us a textWelcome back to DMRWrestling icon Hulk Hogan, born Terry Bollea in 1953, skyrocketed to global fame in the 1980s as the face of WWF's golden era. From his legendary showdown with André the Giant at WrestleMania III to starring in Rocky III and headlining Hogan Knows Best, Hogan blended sports entertainment with pop culture like no one else. His larger-than-life persona, catchphrases like “Whatcha gonna do, brother?” and his role in launching the nWo in WCW cemented him as a true disruptor in the wrestling industry. Hogan also broke the mold as a crossover celebrity, starring in films like No Holds Barred and Suburban Commando, all while battling in-ring legends like Macho Man, Ultimate Warrior, and The Rock. His second WWE Hall of Fame induction in 2020 as part of the nWo was a full-circle moment, marking a legacy that defined the modern wrestling narrative. But behind the spotlight was a man facing mounting personal and health challenges. A highly publicized scandal in 2015 led to his WWE exit and the loss of key endorsements, though he later returned amid controversy. In his final years, Hogan underwent over 25 surgeries, battled blood cancer, and dealt with strained family ties—all while trying to launch a new wrestling league, Real American Freestyle. Tragically, on July 24, 2025, he passed away at age 71 following a cardiac arrest, with atrial fibrillation and leukemia contributing to his death. Yet even in his final moments, Hogan stayed focused on his next big idea. Tributes poured in across the world, and Florida officially declared August 1st Hulk Hogan Day. Love him or hate him, Hulk Hogan was a content machine, a branding genius, and a viral force who redefined what it meant to be a wrestling superstar in the age of spectacle.Support the showThe audio clips used in this podcast, including excerpts from movie/series/documentary trailers, are used under the principles of fair use and fair dealing for the purpose of criticism, commentary, and review. Welcome to Episode 26 of Pro Wrestling Spotlight REWIND. Today's episode features an original uncut episode of the historic talk show, hosted by John Arezzi. On this episode we share the July 21st, 1991 broadcast of Pro Wrestling Spotlight, which aired on 1240 AM in West Babylon New York. On this episode we cover the Press Conference held on July 19th, 1991 at NYC's Plaza Hotel, held by Vince McMahon and WWF PR Director Steve Planamenta - to address the steroid scandals exploding at that time. Dr. George Zaharion (WWF Ringside Doctor in PA) was convicted by a jury for illegal distribution of Steroids, and McMahon needed to put water on that fire. The WWF attempted to control the media at that time and did not invite the Wrestling Press to attend (especially yours truly). I was able to get in using an alias, and confronted McMahon about it. All captured on tape. Later on the show - we featured reporter Alex Marvez of the Miami Herald to discuss the turmoil and the scandals. Also we promote Weekend of Champions, which became the largest wrestling fans convention of that era, with the convention featuring Ric Flair (his FIRST signing ever), Buddy Rogers, Bruno Sammartino, Lou Thesz, Billy Graham, Fabulous Moolah and so many more! Bryan Alvarez and Mike Sempervive talk about the biggest news in wrestling!
Seth and Marc discuss the legacy of Terry Bollea (aka Hulk Hogan) before trudging through the jingoistic 2nd grade poetry that is Real American as sung by Rick Derringer. A song that has aged like the Cold War, there is some interesting history to be learned and some talk to be had about what makes someone indefensible.
The Brawl for All bodycount reaches a crescendo! In this episode of Wrasslin' Raw, the boys take a look at the go-home show leading into SummerSlam 1998. Dan Severn finally gets exposed, Southern Justice finally gets some in-ring time, and we finally get some resolution in the Cahoots! storyline (or do we?). Taka Michinoku approaches full “jobber” status while Bart Gunn confirms “badass” status, and take a drink every time there's potential for CTE!
Professional wrestling legend Hulk Hogan (real name: Terry Bollea) passed away on Thursday, July 24 in Clearwater, Florida. He was 71 years old. Hulk Hogan was and remains one of the most important figures in American and global popular culture. Hulk Hogan/Terry Bollea also leaves behind a very complicated legacy. Brian R. Solomon is a leading professional wrestling journalist, historian, and author. He is the host of the popular Shut up and Wrestle podcast. His new book is Irresistible Force: The Life and Times of Gorilla Monsoon. Solomon reflects on why the death of Hulk Hogan has caused so much emotional pain and tumult for those of us who came of age in the 1980s and directly experienced the rise of the global cultural phenomenon that was the World Wrestling Federation (now WWE) and Hulkamania. Solomon details why Hulk Hogan and the WWF's meteoric rise, his decades-long career (including reinventing himself as the leader of the New World Order faction in World Championship Wrestling), and marriage of personality and cultural moment will never be repeated again in professional wrestling, and likely sports more broadly. Solomon and Chauncey discuss their love of professional wrestling and why Hulk Hogan was so central to it – and also try to process how Terry Bollea's foul behavior and values such as his racism, hostility to labor unions, and public alliance with Donald Trump and the MAGA movement complicates that relationship and nostalgia. This week we give some love to the immortal Hulk Hogan. As everyone knows, Hogan passed away recently and since he was Greg's childhood hero, we had to dedicate an episode to the character that is Hulk Hogan. If it wasn't for him, wrestling today would not be what it is. Hulkamania would not be running wild and we would have never taken our vitamins! So give this one a listen as you grab a WWF ice cream bar and wear your red and yellow!
