National security concerns have been the invisible hand guiding governance throughout recorded history. In the 20th century, it was defined by a country versus country dynamic: whichever nation was the strongest and most strategic was also the safest. But today, our biggest national security threats don't come from opposing nations – they are “actorless threats” that emerge from the breakdown of the complex systems we all depend on – from the stability of our planetary systems to our intricately complex and fragile global supply chains. In this unprecedented landscape, what is required of us in order to keep our citizens safe?  In this episode, Nate is joined by Rod Schoonover, an expert at the intersection of Earth systems stress and national security, where they discuss the need for the evolution of national defense to address the systemic (and diffuse) threats of the 21st century. Rod emphasizes the need for a reformed security sector that addresses contemporary challenges, like global heating that leads to extreme climatic events, urging immediate action to mitigate risks and enhance stability. Importantly, they also delve into the need for political leadership to embrace complexity and local resilience when tackling these pressing issues. How do we unite against ‘actorless' threats, even when we don't have someone to blame for their damages? Where have leadership and governance already begun to adapt to address these existential concerns, and where are we seeing failures? Finally, how could incorporating more cooperative principles at every level of society transform our ability to bend – not break – under the weight of our human predicament?  (Conversation recorded on May 6th, 2025)   About Rod Schoonover: Rod Schoonover is the CEO and Founder of the Ecological Futures Group, Adjunct Professor at Georgetown University, Senior Associate Fellow at the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), and Senior Associate at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.  Rod served a decade in the U.S. intelligence community as the Director of Environment and Natural Resources at the National Intelligence Council in the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and as Senior Scientist and Senior Analyst in the State Department's Bureau of Intelligence and Research. Before joining the government as a AAAS Diplomacy Fellow in 2009, Rod was a tenured Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. Dr. Schoonover earned his PhD in theoretical chemical physics at the University of Michigan, where he studied complex systems.   Show Notes and More Watch this video episode on YouTube   Want to learn the broad overview of The Great Simplification in 30 minutes? Send us a textA Legacy Rooted in Wine and FamilyThe episode kicks off with lighthearted banter and a warm welcome to the first Inside the Bunghole episode of 2025, featuring Michael Keenan of Keenan Wines in Napa Valley. Michael shares the multigenerational story of his family's vineyard, which began when his father, Robert Keenan, was inspired by his father-in-law's wine collection and purchased the Spring Mountain property in 1974. At the time, Napa was far from the food and wine mecca it is today, but Robert had a vision of producing first-growth quality Cabernet Sauvignon. Spring Mountain's ideal east-facing slopes and abundant water supply made it the perfect location. Michael reminisces about the winery's origin, including its ghost winery roots (the property housed a winery from 1890–1930) and the early Bordeaux varietals they were the first to plant on that specific land. From Wandering Seeker to Reluctant WinemakerMichael's personal journey into winemaking wasn't direct. After high school, he traveled the world, became a vegetarian, and meditated in India before returning home in 1977. Initially working the harvest temporarily, he pursued a career in carpentry and general contracting for over 20 years. A family dispute later separated him from the winery, but after the death of his stepmother and reconciling with his father, Michael took over operations in 1998 with one condition: total control. Over time, he reestablished the winery's reputation, embraced a restrained, old-world style of winemaking, and distanced himself from overly ripe Napa wines, aligning more with French techniques that emphasized balance, savoriness, and complexity.Craft, Chemistry & the Keenan IdentityThe conversation shifts into the mechanics of winemaking—Michael explains his preference for mostly neutral barrels and minimal oak influence, likening barrel use to salt in cooking: essential but never overpowering. He also criticizes the use of additives like MegaPurple, which mask a wine's true characteristics and require toxic stabilizers. As the discussion continues, Michael shares stories about label design rooted in family history, his deepening pride in the winery over time, and the upcoming 50th vintage celebration. Notably, the Tribute wine—a 50/50 blend of Bordeaux clones—symbolizes both a viticultural and emotional milestone, coinciding with his father's passing and marking a profound evolution in both the vineyard and Michael's stewardship.Cheers! DOD has a significant need for certain chemicals but admittedly has no tracking system for upstream applications of chemicals to understand the implications of EPA's identification of high priority substances and risk evaluation of them under TSCA Section 6. Dr. Underwood and Dr. Engler discuss the recent RFI issued by DOD to provide this line of sight and they reflect upon the growing importance of supply chain transparency in DOD applications and in the private sector as a whole. This theory, proposed by physicist Mordecai Milgrom, modifies Newton's laws to explain the gravitational behavior observed in galaxies without relying on dark matter. We delve into the latest findings that support MOND, including a novel method for measuring gravity in wide binary star systems, which indicates that gravity may actually be stronger than Newton's predictions under certain conditions.Earth's Hidden Gold ReservesA groundbreaking study reveals that Earth's core may contain vast reserves of gold and other precious metals, far beyond what is accessible on the surface. Researchers discovered traces of ruthenium in volcanic rocks from Hawaii, suggesting that these metals originated from the core and are leaking into the mantle. This research opens new avenues for understanding Earth's internal dynamics and the movement of materials from the core to the surface.Searching for Life's Chemistry on TitanNASA's upcoming Dragonfly mission aims to investigate the intriguing chemistry of life on Titan, Saturn's largest moon. With its organic-rich environment and unique geological features, Titan presents an opportunity to study prebiotic chemistry in a way that Earth cannot. We explore how Dragonfly will analyze the moon's surface and atmosphere to uncover clues about the processes that may have led to the emergence of life, potentially reshaping our understanding of habitability in the universe.www.spacetimewithstuartgary.com✍️ Episode ReferencesAstrophysical Journalhttps://iopscience.iop.org/journal/0004-637XNaturehttps://www.nature.com/nature/Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/spacetime-space-astronomy--2458531/support.00:00 This is Space Time Series 28, Episode 68 for broadcast on 6 June 202501:00 Modified Newtonian dynamics as an alternative to dark matter12:15 Earth's hidden gold reserves22:30 Searching for life's chemistry on Titan30:00 Science report: Ancient tool-making from whale bones and quantum computing breakthroughs

The Put it in the Books Show S8 E8: Chemistry, Clutch... and a Classic Mets Gut PunchThe Mets dropped one in true Mets fashion—a gut-wrenching, self-inflicted 6-5 extra innings loss to the Dodgers that felt like a throwback to the worst timeline. And what better way to unpack it than with Farace, Rodriguez, and Producer Joe (who actually showed up this week)? Keith is out tonight, likely reviewing footage of Lindor's glove work from April.Despite the meltdown, the Mets are still 39-24 and winners of 12 of their last 15. Pete, Soto, and Nimmo are heating up at the plate. The dugout's loose (flip-the-bottle, anyone?), chemistry is cooking, and even McNeil's playing CF without needing a GPS. Pete and Megill's handshake? No idea what it is, but it's working. Extend them both.Should Pete be the captain? Lindor? Nimmo? Or do we just rotate the title weekly like Producer Joe's attendance? The fellas also dig into the pitching—maybe the best staff in baseball—and whether the Mets need to make moves or just trust the next man up. They'll preview the series against the 12-50 Rockies (yes, that's not a typo), followed by a return home for matchups with the Nationals and Rays.Join us as we laugh through the pain and put it all in the books.

This is a Fan Fav episode. What stops us from finding real love? Is it bad luck, a broken picker… or the fantasy that “chemistry” is the only thing that matters? In this conversation, I sit down with love and relationship expert Spirit to crack open the truths most of us never hear about compatibility, new relationship energy, forgiveness, and how to build a lasting partnership—even when the butterflies fade. Spirit and I go deep on the difference between chemistry and compatibility (and why confusing the two is a recipe for disaster), how resentment builds if we avoid hard conversations, and what real forgiveness actually looks like. Plus, we get tactical: how to work through grudges, make better “agreements” as a couple, and reignite connection after years together. This episode is packed with real talk, practical tools, and myth-busting must-knows for anyone who wants extraordinary love—not just the fairy tale. Sibley Bacon is an applied researcher and functional artist, and shares how she blends creativity with structure to build more human-centered teams. Sibely describes what it means to be a "functional artist"—a leader who truly sees the big picture, connects deeply, and inspires through presence, not position. She reflects on lessons from her time at Google, where she worked on improving team dynamics and navigating the gap between theory and business reality. Sibley offers a new take on employee engagement: when people see their work as art, not just tasks, their connection to the purpose changes. She also shares why slowing down might be the most strategic move in a world driven by AI and speed—and why getting outside is more critical than ever. This episode challenges assumptions, invites deeper thinking, and offers a powerful mindset shift for anyone who wants to lead with heart and clarity. You can find episode 463 wherever you get your podcasts! We're now on … please subscribe!   Key Takeaways [02:47] Jim asked about Sibley's journey, being a child of two artists yet pursuing math and science. Sibley shared that her home was one of high standards and creative discipline. Her father was a sculptor; her mother, a classical singer. She said, “If you're not doing art, what is the point of being alive?” For her, structure and excellence weren't negotiable—they were the minimum. Sibley remembered being asked about grad school at age nine. Her great-aunt had a PhD in Chemistry in 1935, so expectations were generational. That bar shaped her belief that nothing is off-limits if you approach it with discipline, humility, and openness. [05:54] Jim asked about what steered her toward tech. She recalled standing on a plaza at University of Maryland, looking around and realizing that “humans keep creating humans,” and data would need to be stored digitally. It wasn't about passion—it was about self-reliance: food, shelter, and survival. That clarity fueled her path into software engineering. [07:29] Jan asked about being a functional artist. Sibley said being an artist is about seeing everything and feeling everything. Functional art, she said, is about creating elegant tools for mundane tasks—turning the ordinary into something purposeful and moving. “You have to absorb it all… and produce something people take note of.” [09:11] Jan brought up tone and intention in leadership. Sibley believes leadership starts with love. She cited John Madden's wisdom—you have to know who needs encouragement, discipline, or nurturing. She said, “When your team knows you love them, and you're doing everything you can to support their creative success, they perform better.” [11:49] Jim asked about her work at Google. Sibley said she approaches team effectiveness as an art form. At Google, she was both responding to and initiating change. She credited Dave Duffield (founder of PeopleSoft and Workday) with teaching her how to connect dots between software and business execution. She added, “If you don't want to learn and grow, you don't want to work on my team.” [14:24] Jim explored what makes cultures thrive or struggle. Sibley noted that unclear missions and rules of engagement stall momentum. She contrasted Google's abundance and academic culture with her own background rooted in lean business execution—underscoring how resource environments shape behavior and accountability. [17:27] Jim asked about balancing creativity and discipline. Sibley explained that Google was designed for “starburst innovation”—parallel innovation across many disciplines. It took years, but she now sees how that environment was tailored for breakthroughs in AI, quantum computing, and neural networking. [21:26] Jan asked about negotiating engagement. Sibley flipped the phrase. “We need to go as slowly as we possibly can, as fast as possible,” she said. It's not just poetic—it's tactical. Today's emerging workforce, shaped by digital native neurology, requires deceleration to connect, adapt, and lead effectively. [24:50] Jan asked about adaptability. Sibley emphasized customizing leadership. Some thrive remotely, others need community. “You're not leading static people,” she said. “Their lives are dynamic. How they need you changes.” To lead well, you must stretch your people—and stay one step ahead. [27:33] Jim asked how generations can collaborate. Sibley shared her commitment to being “a good ancestor.” It means grounding innovation in what's real—like gravity—and connecting high-tech tools to basic human needs. She's working on building a “small business market exchange” to complement Wall Street with sustainability. [34:45] Sibley said humility was the hardest thing she's worked for. “I was born a Leo, the year of the dragon, in Texas,” she laughed. “That doesn't set you up for humility.” Her journey, she shared, is about making a living amends—and doing the work to serve others better. [36:02] And remember...“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.”-Pablo Picasso   Quotable Quotes “with a global computing infrastructure, I think we need to go as slowly as we possibly can, as fast as possible.” “Being an artist, you have to see everything. “ “It's not your job whether or not they like it or not. It's about that they think about it.” “Team execution effectiveness to support business sustainability. That is my art form.” “Part of being a leader is being willing to negotiate.” “We need employees to be adaptable. Everything's changing. At the same time, we need leaders to be adaptable.” “So I think to be a leader means adapting to every single one of the people on your team, as their lives are dynamic.” “I always want to be able to stretch people outside their comfort zone so that they can learn and grow.”   Resources Mentioned The Leadership Podcast | Sponsored by | Rafti Advisors.
