Over the years, Karen has received countless questions about one fragrance family in particular: aldehydes. They often leave people puzzled about what they are and how they're used in perfumery. In this episode, Karen breaks down the fragrance family that sparked a true revolution in the perfume industry. Focusing on Chanel No. 5, the impact it made, and its groundbreaking use of aldehydes, this show explores what aldehydes are, and why they matter. KEY TAKEAWAYS Coco Chanel lived a very interesting and, at times, controversial life. But, as Karen explains, it was her life experiences that enabled her to create Chanel No. 5 Chanel No. 5 had an interesting early life, both as a product and as a formulation. Karen gives a brief history of this iconic fragrance. Due to the success of Chanel No. 5, other perfume houses started to use aldehydes more aggressively. Karen shares an overview of the scents that it inspired. Aldehydes also begin to be incorporated into other products, and in turn, bleed into daily life. Karen details just how prominent aldehydes are in day-to-day living. BEST MOMENTS “Coco Chanel was not considered mainstream, but her style created a shift in fashion and culture.” “What we might think of modern today is going to be the old fashioned of the future.” “Comparing fragrances of the same genre is an incredibly useful learning tool.” VALUABLE RESOURCES The Secret of Chanel No. 5: The Intimate History of the World's Most Famous Perfume Getting Started Guide Artisan Perfumery Mastermind ABOUT THE HOST Fragrance expert, author, teacher and speaker; Karen Gilbert runs courses in the UK and online which demystify the secretive world of perfumery in a fun and interactive way. Welcome to Dr. M's Women & Children First Podcast, where we engage with pioneering voices at the intersection of science, healthcare, and the well-being of families. Today, I'm honored to introduce Dr. William Parker, PhD. Dr. Parker is perhaps best known for discovering the function of the human appendix, but his contributions to science extend far beyond that single discovery. He studied biology and chemistry as an undergraduate before earning his PhD in Chemistry from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln in 1992. Since the 1980s, he has conducted innovative research, publishing more than 150 peer-reviewed articles that span immune function, microbiome science, and human health. Dr. Parker was the first to compare immune systems in wild animals with those of their laboratory counterparts, and among the first to conclude that changes in the human “biota”, the symbiotic organisms living within us, brought on by modern society can contribute to depression and anxiety. After nearly three decades at Duke University, where he served as associate professor and research leader, he founded WPLab, Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to understanding and educating about the causes of chronic inflammatory diseases in high-income societies. Currently a visiting scholar at the University of North Carolina, Dr. Parker collaborates widely with colleagues from Duke University, University of Montreal, Czech Academy of Sciences, University of Groningen, University of Colorado Boulder, and scientists across the pharmaceutical industry. In recent years, he has turned his attention to a provocative and urgent question: the potential links between early acetaminophen exposure and autism spectrum outcomes. His current work combines mechanistic and epidemiologic approaches to explore how acetaminophen's effects on human physiology at critical stages of development might influence neurodevelopment. In our conversation, we'll explore: The evidence and hypotheses behind acetaminophen's potential role in autism risk What families and clinicians should know: what's plausible, what remains speculative, and where research is heading next I'm thrilled to share this episode with Dr. Parker, whose intellectual curiosity, scientific rigor, and courage to ask difficult questions embody the spirit of this show. In 1856, after yet another day of disappointing experiments, a chemist named William Henry Perkin was cleaning up his glassware when he made a discovery that would harken a new — and colorful — era of science and industry. Just 18 years old, Perkin was a promising young student in a prestigious lab at the Royal College of Chemistry in London and he was supposed to be figuring out a way to make a chemical compound called quinine. Despite his best efforts, Perkin was coming up empty — or rather — producing a lot of dirty dishes with little to show for it. But he did notice that there was a curious goop in one of his flasks, and it turned a brilliant shade of purple in the wash. Intrigued, Perkin decided to try dyeing a swatch of silk with his serendipitous solution. Although he had failed yet again to produce quinine, Perkin had created the very first synthetic dye and launched a scientific industry that is still bringing new drugs and dyes to market today.Send us your science facts, news, or other stories for a chance to be featured on an upcoming Tiny Show and Tell Us bonus episode. Dr. Cliff Kapono is a professional surfer, journalist, ocean steward, cultural advocate, and marine conservation scientist with a PhD in Chemistry. He is a co-founder of the MEGA Lab, which has pioneered large-scale, community-driven 3D mapping of coral reefs, pushing the boundaries of how we understand and preserve our oceans. He is an ambassador and board member of the Surfrider foundation and is a featured surfer in Thomas Campbell's film Yi-Wo, VICE's The Smartest Surfer in the World, and NobodySurf's Circadian Rhythms. Joining The Lineup from his home in Hilo, Hawai‘i, Cliff reflects on balancing his life between science and surfing, and the power of learning when to say no. He dives into his new VICE documentary, Let It Kill You: The Smartest Surfer in the World, and how the project highlights the many ways surfers can elevate their community and contribute to society beyond competition. Cliff shares his journey from growing up in rural Hawai‘i and chasing the dream of free boards and boardshorts, to becoming one of the few Native Hawaiians with a PhD. He discusses the struggle of reconciling what it means to be a “pro surfer,” the support of brands like Vissla and Reef, and his mission to advocate for scientific literacy in the surf community. The conversation ranges from board talk and the subtleties of rail spray, to the MEGA Lab's cutting-edge ocean technology projects, to the pioneers and storytellers who shaped his perspective. Cliff also answers fan questions, looks ahead to what's next for him and his work, and shares why staying connected to the ocean remains at the heart of everything he does.
