About Michael Dubrovsky:Michael Dubrovsky is a founder-operator and applied scientist working at the intersection of materials science, photonics, and real-world impact. He is the co-founder and CEO of SiPhox Health, a Y Combinator (S20), Khosla Ventures, and Intel Capital–backed startup based in Cambridge, building painless at-home blood biomarker testing to help people live healthier, longer lives. Alongside SiPhox, he serves on the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) ILA20 committee and co-hosts 632nm, a technical interview series featuring top scientists and engineers. Previously, he co-founded PoWx, a nonprofit advancing energy-efficient photonic hardware for proof-of-work cryptography, work that is now used commercially to secure billions of dollars in value. Earlier in his career, Michael founded Simply Grid, named by Fast Company as one of the world's most innovative energy companies, deploying first-of-its-kind curbside EV and food-vendor charging infrastructure in New York City before exiting via acquisition. His background includes advanced research at MIT and Technion in nanofabrication and materials characterization and a BS in Chemistry from SUNY ESF. His personal mantra: no hurry, no pause.Things You'll Learn:At-home blood testing eliminates major barriers, such as appointments, referrals, and travel, while expanding access to advanced diagnostics. This convenience is driving higher adoption among both consumers and businesses. Many critical biomarkers linked to longevity and chronic disease are often ignored in standard primary care testing. Home testing allows patients to proactively monitor what would otherwise go unseen.Clinician trust remains a challenge due to early inaccuracies in home testing technologies. FDA clearance is expected to play a major role in broader medical acceptanceBusinesses benefit from home testing by eliminating high-friction steps that stall patient conversion. This leads to better experiences and significantly improved funnel performance.Scaling home diagnostics follows a familiar pattern where early adopters subsidize innovation. Over time, costs drop and access expands to broader populations.Resources:Connect with and follow Michael Dubrovsky on LinkedIn.Follow SiPhox Health on LinkedIn and visit their website.Listen to Michael's podcast on Apple Podcasts or Spotify.Email Michael directly here.

In this episode, podcast co-hosts Dr. Dwight Stoll and Dr. James Grinias talk with Professor Kelly Hines. Dr. Hines is an associate professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Georgia in Athens. She received her B.S. degree in Chemistry from the University of Florida, and then completed the Ph.D. in Chemistry at Vanderbilt University. Her doctoral studies focused on monitoring biomolecular signatures of disease via ion mobility and mass spectrometry techniques, and then she moved on to post-doctoral experiences at two different institutions. The first stop was at the metabolomics resource core at the Mayo Clinic, and the second stop was in the Department of Medicinal Chemistry at the University of Washington School of Pharmacy. Kelly has won several awards in the field of chemical analysis, including recognition as a Female Role Model in Analytical Chemistry by Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry, as an Emerging Investigator by the Journal of the American Society for Mass Spectrometry, an ASMS Research Award (which is one of the top honors that young investigators in MS can receive), and very recently was named as the Chemist of the Year by the Northeast Georgia Section of the American Chemical Society. In a wide-ranging conversation, we discuss the early origins of Kelly's interest in science rooted in her opportunity to explore the plant nursery managed by her father, and then her turn from civil engineering to analytical chemistry inspired by an early undergraduate course “Chemistry for Engineers”. We discuss Hines' recent and ongoing work involving the use of ion mobility mass spectrometry (IMS-MS), with pre-separation using chromatography when appropriate, for multi-omics studies, aimed at deeper understanding of the biochemistry of organisms at the metabolite level. We also discuss Kelly's positive experiences developing peer networks through regular attendance at conferences, particularly the American Society for Mass Spectrometry (ASMS) annual meeting, experiences in her second post-doctoral position that inspired her to pursue an academic position, and her approach to mentoring graduate students who show up in her laboratory with diverse backgrounds, interests, and abilities.

On this classic episode of ID The Future, we conclude a 2019 conversation between ID pioneer and biologist Dr. Jonathan Wells and distinguished Brazilian chemist Marcos Eberlin. The occasion for the chat was the publication of Dr. Eberlin's book Foresight: How the Chemistry of Life Reveals Planning and Purpose. A member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, Eberlin is a world leader in the field of mass spectrometry. His book was endorsed by three Nobel laureates. In the second half of the conversation, Eberlin explains how chemistry reveals foresight in the design of molecules and chemical systems. To the untrained eye, water looks like a simple clear liquid. To the chemist, it has 74 unique, even “weird” properties essential for life. And lightning seems purely destructive, but it, too, is essential for life. As Eberlin argues, both of these suggest foresight in the design of life — foresight to solve problems necessary to make life on earth possible. This is Part 2 of a two-part discussion. Source

Most pool pros have heard it for years: lower the pH to make chlorine stronger. That's true in non-stabilized water, but once cyanuric acid enters the picture, the rules change. We sit down with Eric Knight to unpack why the FC-to-CYA ratio, not pH, governs chlorine's effective strength in outdoor pools—and how that insight can save you time, money, and a lot of acid.We break down the chemistry in plain language. You'll hear how chlorine splits into hypochlorous acid and hypochlorite ion, why that balance matters indoors, and how CYA binds most chlorine outdoors to form isocyanurates. With typical CYA levels, the effective kill speed stays nearly the same between pH 7.0 and 8.0, which means chasing an ultra-low pH for “stronger chlorine” is a dead end. Instead, use pH to manage balance on the Langelier Saturation Index, contain its rise with smart alkalinity and calcium hardness, and aim for a CYA level that keeps your free chlorine target achievable. We also talk real-world strategy: the pitfalls of overstabilization, how high CYA inflates contact times, and why partial drains are sometimes the only fix. To sharpen your program, support chlorine with enzymes to trim oxidant demand, control phosphates to lower growth pressure, and consider secondary oxidation where it fits. The goal is a stable chain: CYA in range, free chlorine matched to that CYA, pH contained for LSI, and demand reduced so sanitizer can do its job.• FC-to-CYA ratio as the primary driver of chlorine effectiveness in outdoor pools• Why pH control matters for LSI balance more than sanitization with CYA present• The equilibrium of HOCl and OCl− in non-stabilized water contrasted with CYA-bound chlorine• Practical CYA ranges and why levels above 50 ppm complicate free chlorine targets• Overstabilization risks, longer contact times, and when to drain and dilute• Using enzymes, phosphate control, and secondary oxidizers to reduce oxidant demand• Containing pH with LSI strategy instead of forcing low numbers that rebound• Clear differences between saSend us a textSupport the Pool Guy Podcast Show Sponsors! This solo masterclass on oxalates explains why many people who eat clean still struggle with joint pain, kidney stones, fatigue, brain fog, and chronic inflammation. You'll learn how oxalates behave very differently from other plant compounds like lectins, phytates, and salicylates. Unlike those compounds, oxalates physically bind minerals and form microscopic crystals that can lodge in tissues, damage mitochondria, and accumulate over time. This episode will change how you think about superfoods, clean eating, and long term human performance. Watch this episode on YouTube for the full video experience: https://www.youtube.com/@DaveAspreyBPR Host Dave Asprey walks you through the real science of oxalates using decades of self experimentation, functional medicine research, and hands on biohacking. As the founder of the biohacking movement, Dave has tested fasting, ketosis, carnivore strategies, supplements, nootropics, sleep optimization protocols, and metabolic interventions to uncover what actually improves resilience, neuroplasticity, and mitochondrial function without unnecessary damage. In this masterclass, you'll learn why oxalates cause problems even when digestion seems fine, why symptoms can show up in joints, kidneys, nerves, skin, and old injuries, and why reducing oxalates too fast can make you feel worse before you feel better. Dave explains oxalate dumping, candida driven oxalate overload, microbiome interactions, and why foods like spinach, almonds, cacao, and green smoothies often backfire over time. He also shares practical ways to lower your oxalate load safely, support mineral balance, and protect your metabolism and brain using a Smarter Not Harder approach. DHEA was first identified in 1931 by Dr. Adolf Butenandt, who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1939. Frequently called “the anti-aging hormone”, DHEA is a base for more than 50 hormones that are smaller or more specific carbon chain molecules in human biochemistry. As a precursor for all estrogenic and androgenic hormones, humans make DHEA naturally from birth. It's now well established that chronic stress leads to an out-pouring of cortisol and with that, a gradual depletion of DHEA. DHEA is a prohormone – a natural building block for hormones our bodies make.Over time, this hormonal imbalance can lead to brain fog, thinning bones, weight gain, low sex drive and poor Immune function.Maintaining proper DHEA levels in the body is important to your overall health and may lead to Increased energy, enhanced mood and focus, sound sleep, and better letting skin.Guest: Joining us today is Hugh Woodward, He is the President of Health2Go, Inc the makers of Twist 25 DHEA cream. Hugh is a subject matter expert on DHEA dedicating nearly 2 decades of his life studying the medical research about it, and starting a company to research, develop the safest most effective DHEA supplement that can be made and distributing it.In 2007 Mr. Woodward started Health2Go, Inc. to research and develop leading edge anti-aging and wellness products and bring them to people conveniently and cost effectively.Quality matters when supplementing with DHEA.Twist 25 DHEA Cream puts exactly what the body makes naturally – bioidentical DHEA -in the skin, where the body processes DHEA.  As a base building block for hormones, DHEA gives the body a key foundation it uses to make hormones, (especially the androgens our feel-good hormones.)Visit Twist25.com to learn more and order online. What does “going with the flow” actually mean in dating, and why does it so often lead to situationships, resentment, and self-abandonment? In the final episode of the Clarity Series, Sabrina breaks down how passivity, fear of asking for more, and chasing chemistry over availability keep people stuck in almost-relationships. This episode explores the psychological and nervous system reasons we suppress our needs, tolerate ambiguity, and confuse flexibility with emotional safety. You'll learn the difference between dating with intention versus dating from control or fear, how to identify your real non-negotiables, why situationships persist, and what it actually looks like to stop auditioning for love and start choosing yourself. If you're tired of waiting to be chosen, afraid of being “too much,” or stuck in cycles of undefined connections, this episode gives you the framework to leave self-abandonment behind and date with clarity, confidence, and self-trust. On our latest visit into the ID The Future archive, we stumbled on this little gem: a 2019 conversation between ID pioneer and biologist Dr. In this first of two conversations, Eberlin speaks to the scientist's duty to follow the evidence where it leads, and explains how the incredible problem-solving engineering involved in just one structure, the cell membrane, may lead one to the conclusion that a mind planned it in advance. It's nice to hear Dr. Wells's voice again. We lost our good friend and colleague in 2024 at the age of 82. In case you missed our series of interviews remembering Wells, find the links below. This is Part 1 of a two-part interview. Look for Part 2 in a separate episode. Source

Check out our recommended Best Books for Retirement _________________________ Bios Kim Gottlieb-Walker's  career as a photographer covered a wide range of subjects, from classic rock and roll, reggae, and politics in the ‘60s and ‘70s to major motion pictures and television shows. Now in her late 70s, she has reinvented herself as a novelist. While still at UCLA (where she  received a BA in Motion Picture production) and shortly thereafter, she shot for underground LA newspapers and magazines including Crawdaddy, the Staff, and Music World. She  also shot the stills for John Carpenter's Halloween, The Fog, Christine and Escape from New York and worked at Paramount Pictures for nine years as the production photographer for Cheers, and five years for Family Ties. For three decades she  was an elected representative for still photographers on the National Executive Board of IATSE Local 600, the International Cinematographers Guild. Her coffee-table photo books Bob Marley and the Golden Age of Reggae and On Set with John Carpenter were published by Titan Press (UK) distributed by Random House (USA) and both are now in multiple printing. They have editions in Japanese, Russian and French. She's  had gallery shows in London, Los Angeles and New York. Her novels are  Lenswoman in Love – a novel of the 1960s & ‘70s (her debut) and the not-yet published historical novel Caterina by Moonlight, about a girl growing up in renaissance Florence in the late 15th century. Her short story “Summer of Love – 1967” appears in the multi-award-winning anthology Feisty Deeds. Former math and computer science teacher, Roselyn Teukolsky, is the author of A Reluctant Spy, an unconventional spy thriller, and The Fourth Woman, a cautionary tale about online dating. Teukolsky has long been intrigued by the dilemmas faced by smart women in male-dominated settings. Working as a computer science teacher has given her the familiarity to create an authentic female protagonist, a brilliant computer scientist, who, in the latest novel, must ward off a ransomware attack and an online-dating predator. Teukolsky has a B.Sc. in Math and Chemistry from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, and an M.S. in Math Education from Cornell. She is the author of the Barron's review book for AP Computer Science, which is currently in its 12th edition. Roselyn's favorite pastime is tournament bridge. She wrote How to Play Bridge with Your Spouse … and Survive (Master Point Press) in 2002. She lives in Pasadena, CA, with her husband, Saul Teukolsky. ________________________ Have a Question You’d Like Answered on the Podcast? And it keeps your brain alive. There’s so much you have to learn with the learning curve of writing a book that it keeps your brain cells going. It stimulates them. I think there are many people out there who, after having had very active careers that are now retired and are feeling at lost ends. Every person has met interesting people during their lives, has had things happen to them, have had tragedies, have had happiness. Everybody has experiences in them that they might want to communicate. And writing, even though it seems like a very solitary occupation, it gives you a chance to put all of your life experience out into the world and to then connect with other people, other writers, to get the support that you need and to learn all of the different aspects of it. So it’s a very satisfying way to spend your retirement. Oh, well, it’s an amazing group of women. They’re all over 70. They’ve all reinvented themselves as writers. Some were writers beforehand, but most have reinvented themselves. And they cover all different kinds of writing of every genre. There’s self-help, there’s romance, there’s mystery, there’s historical fiction, and they’re all very talented, alert, wonderful women. And we meet every Tuesday on Zoom and commiserate and celebrate and give advice. And it has been the most wonderful support group. So we’re not isolated in retirement. We have interactions with people who have similar goals and similar challenges. It’s a tremendous support group.” – Kim Gottlieb-Walker On Age as an Asset ” It is never too late to reinvent yourself. It’s totally within your reach. You don’t have to depend on anyone else. All you have to do is sit down and let your ideas flow. And I wouldn’t worry about ageism because now that we’re in an age where you can self-publish, it doesn’t matter how old you are. And the fact that we have had such rich lives and so many experiences informs the writing and gives the writing depth and gives it reality because it’s based on our real experiences. No matter what you’re writing, you’re bringing your life experiences into it, which is incredibly valuable. So don’t worry about ageism. Don’t worry about the publisher. Just get it out on paper. Do it yourself.” – Kim Gottlieb-Walker On Starting to Write “A lot of my friends have said to me, Oh, they would love to write a book. They would love to write a book. They’re going to write a book. But the point is, if you don’t sit down every day at the same time, backside in the desk, it doesn’t happen. It just doesn’t. Even if you sit and do nothing. I would ask, what are you going to do in the next 10 years? And I say, I don’t know what I’m going to do. And I say, Well, why not write in the next 10 years?” – Roselyn Teukolsky

Quick list: (on Main Street) the Horse-Drawn Surrey, the Horse-Drawn Firetruck, Wurlitzer Music Hall, Upjohn Pharmacy, the Maxwell Intimate Apparel Shop; (in Frontierland) the Davy Crockett Museum, Horse Corral, Railroad “Cattle Cars,” Conestoga Wagon, Pack Mules; (in Fantasyland) the Mickey Mouse Club Theatre (technically opened 8/27); (in Tomorrowland) Rocket to the Moon, Circarama, World Beneath Us, Space Station X-1, Tomorrowland Boats, ‘20,000 Leagues' Walk-Through (technically opened 8/5), Aluminum Hall of Fame, Monsanto Hall of Chemistry. Question 2: What is a Disney Parks holiday experience that you would like to recreate at home? Question 3: What non-Disney book or character would you like to see adapted into a Disney+ series? Question 4: Which classic Imagineer or park visionary would you love to have dinner with? Think a multi-course meal where you can pick their brains for hours. Or just hang. And yes, you can pick folks who have passed on. Bonus Question: Let's pretend Disney+ is creating a docuseries focused on the history, design, and future plans for resort hotels, which Disney owned hotel (anywhere) would you want them to feature and why?

IN THIS EPISODE: In this episode, Denise Silber HBS MBA welcomes Professor Daniel Elfenbein,  a triple Harvard alumnus and entrepreneurship researcher at Olin Business School. Together, they explore the delicate balance entrepreneurs must strike between confidence and overconfidence, commitment and detachment, and the hard truth of knowing when to pivot—or when to quit. Dan shares insights drawn from his own entrepreneurial journey, research experiments, and global teaching experience. From biotech boardroom standoffs to mathematical models of founder behavior, he unpacks how emotions, attachment, and overconfidence affect decision-making in startups. You'll learn why "quitting" may just be the smartest pivot of all—and how founders can better calibrate their confidence to avoid costly mistakes. GUEST BIO: Daniel Elfenbein is Professor of Strategy at Washington University in St. Louis's Olin Business School. A triple Harvard alumnus, Dan earned his Ph.D. and M.A. in Business Economics from Harvard, and graduated summa cum laude with an A.B. in Chemistry. Dan is a leading scholar at the intersection of strategy, entrepreneurship, and organizational economics. His research delves into how trust, incentives, and behavioral biases shape outcomes in entrepreneurial ventures and strategic alliances. His work has been published in top-tier journals including the Academy of Management Review, Organization Science, Strategic Management Journal, Management Science, and The Review of Economic Studies. A central theme of Dan's research is understanding the nuanced role of overconfidence in entrepreneurial decision-making. His work—spanning computational modeling, experiments, and economic theory—has provided deep insights into how different forms of overconfidence (including overestimation and overprecision) influence venture formation, pivot strategies, and exit decisions. He has demonstrated that some forms of overconfidence can impede learning and decision-making, while others may be counterbalanced by well-designed experimentation programs. Dan served as Chair of the Strategy and Entrepreneurship Area at Olin from 2020 to 2024, where he championed a culture of scholarly excellence and cross-disciplinary collaboration. He served as Academic Director and then as Associate Dean for Olin's joint Executive MBA Program with Fudan School of Management in Shanghai. Prior to academia, Dan worked as a consultant at Monitor Company—a firm founded by Harvard Business School professors and graduates, including Michael E. Porter, with whom Dan had the great privilege to work. He also served as a staff economist with the President's Council of Economic Advisers in the Clinton Administration. He has held faculty appointments at Berkeley's Haas School of Business and has delivered invited talks at Harvard Business School, MIT Sloan, and London Business School, and more than 30 other universities around the globe.
