This episode of WeBER Talks is dedicated to economic growth challenges and opportunities for the Western Balkans. WeBER 3.0 guest is Nicola Pontara, Country Manager of the World Bank in Serbia. He talked with Milena Mihajlović, CEP Programme Director and WeBER 3.0, about the region's future and how reforms, governance, and technology can propel the Western Balkans toward convergence with the EU. 1. Growth Slowdown & Socioeconomic Divergence: While the Western Balkans experienced solid growth in the early 2000s, the region has struggled to maintain momentum post-2008. Nicola highlights the "golden period" between 2000 and 2008 but warns that without significant reforms, convergence with the EU could stretch as far as 2093 in a pessimistic scenario. 2. Governance Deficit: Poor governance remains a significant roadblock. Nicola emphasizes that countries in the region must focus on improving the rule of law, combating corruption, and increasing government accountability to accelerate growth and reduce the trust gap with their citizens.

In the evolving landscape of media and information dissemination, the trajectory of Tucker Carlson's post-Fox News venture into the digital sphere via X/Twitter has been a focal point of intrigue and skepticism. Known for his polarizing views and spirited commentary, Carlson's transition to a platform known for its immediacy and unfiltered reach was watched closely, both by supporters and critics. However, amidst this transition, claims regarding the viewership numbers of Tucker Carlson's short-lived show on X/Twitter have become a contentious subject. Understanding the nature of viewership metrics on digital platforms is integral to this discussion. Unlike traditional television, where Nielsen ratings have long been the standard measure of a show's success, digital platforms offer a myriad of engagement metrics, including views, likes, retweets, and comments. Each of these metrics can paint a vastly different picture of a show's popularity and reach. The controversy stems from the reliability—or lack thereof—of these digital viewership figures presented by or on behalf of Tucker Carlson's online show. Critics argue that these numbers, often flaunted for their impressiveness, lack transparency and verifiability. Digital platforms, with their proprietary algorithms and data, do not offer an external, independent mechanism to validate viewership claims thoroughly. This discrepancy raises important questions about how success is quantified in the digital era. For a television personality such as Tucker Carlson, who has had significant viewership on cable TV, the transition to a digital platform presents new challenges in maintaining and proving an audience's size and engagement level. Moreover, the nature of content consumption on platforms like X/Twitter differs markedly from traditional TV. Users might not engage with a full-length show in one sitting, preferring instead to interact with snippets or highlights, which complicates the notion of a "view." This fragmentation adds another layer of complexity to understanding the true reach and impact of digital shows. In addition, the highly partisan landscape of digital information consumption further muddies the waters. The echo-chamber effect, prevalent on social media platforms, can amplify content within ideological confines, potentially inflating perceived viewership amongst a loyal base while not necessarily breaking through to a wider audience.Given these challenges, the debate over the viewership of Tucker Carlson's short-lived X/Twitter show underscores the broader issues surrounding digital content consumption, measurement, and credibility. It casts a spotlight on the need for clearer metrics, better transparency, and more reliable ways to assess the impact of digital programming in a landscape that continues to shift beneath the feet of traditional media figures trying to find solid ground online.

The smart meter unlocked a trove of data on how people use energy in their homes. And it created the opportunity for utilities to offer more services based on customers' individual needs and consumption habits. These demand-side services are crucial for decarbonizing the grid, enhancing reliability, and integrating more renewables. But many utilities are still in the early stages of digitizing their operations. As director of industry marketing for energy and utilities at Salesforce, Sharon Talbott is helping power providers get more digitally sophisticated. “Utilities still keep a lot of their data in different silos, and then a lot of their processes are done on spreadsheets and with people handing packets of paper to each other with wet signatures and things like that. So a lot of utilities want to change that,” explains Sharon. This week, Brad talks with Sharon about how she works with electricity companies to provide more digital services and products to their customers in order to modernize their operations. This podcast is produced by GridX. GridX is the Enterprise Rate Platform that modern utilities rely on to usher in our clean energy future.

Our guest podcast guest says, People who discuss digital transformation often focus on new technology with a presumption that the working population will embrace it enthusiastically. But human beings are still instinctively dominated by fear, a single complicating reflex which will always be the default response. In simple words, humans are hardwired to resist change. Our brain resists change as a threat which releases reactions such as fear, fight, or flight. These are difficult responses to deal with when emerging technologies are constantly tossing us into change, and fear is one of the most prevalent responses. Fear can have enormous repercussions on an organization, including increased vulnerability to ransomware and cyberattack, increased employee turnover, loss of competitiveness, loss of market share, resistance, sabotage, discrimination, and litigation. So how do we deal with this? How do companies deal with fear in the organization as new technologies are introduced, and organization transformation takes place? This podcast explores what kind of fear is prevalent in the workforce, how people react to it and what we can do about it.

Over the past decade, space has gained increasing importance as an economic sector offering opportunities for established and emerging markets. This briefing focuses on the state of play in regard to the EU's space economy, while also examining the EU's reliance on space services. Specifically, it highlights the relevance of the EU in the global space market and looks at the ways the EU could boost its use of space data and services to deliver on its main political priorities. - Original publication on the EP Think Tank website - Subscription to our RSS feed in case your have your own RSS reader - Podcast available on Deezer, iTunes, TuneIn, Stitcher, YouTubeSource: © European Union - EP

We'll be speaking to Raffaella Tenconi to find out all about what female entrepreneurs need to know about the global digital transition in order to succeed. Raffaella is an economist, entrepreneur and a mum of two. She is the founder and Managing Director of ADA Economics, specialising in forecasting currencies and the business cycle. For Raffaella entrepreneurship was always in her blood: she is the daughter of two entrepreneurs and she will tell us how that upbringing inspired her to achieve. She left her native Italy at the age of 17 to study at the London School of Economics and has worked as an economist for Lombard Street Research, Dresdner Kleinwort, Bank of America Merrill Lynch between 2003-2015. Raffaella describes herself as a loyal Londoner since 1998 and tells us she is especially proud of the fact that she became a chief economist for an investment bank before the age of 30 and the fact that she set up her business around the same time as having her two children. We'd say that's definitely an achievement! We absolutely cannot wait to hear from this amazing lady. Small businesses have a lot to gain by implementing digital transformation. “Going digital” can help business owners develop productive and cost-effective workflows, reduce administrative overhead, and unlock growth opportunities. However, many small business owners find it challenging to embrace digital transformation. It's not that they don't want to - it's just that many of them find that technological solutions aren't as accessible as they hoped, and that the intimidating knowledge gap can be hard to bridge. All this changed this year. Satya Nadella, Microsoft's CEO, said: “We saw 2 years of digital transformation in 2 months” Suddenly, businesses that were online-skeptical are rushing into the digital space because they simply must. In this episode we talk to a company that helps businesses reach “tech savviness” regardless of the industry they are in.

The European Commission has decided today to launch a €1 billion call for research and innovation projects that respond to the climate crisis and help protect Europe’s unique ecosystems and biodiversity. The Horizon 2020-funded European Green Deal Call, which will open tomorrow for registration, will spur Europe’s recovery from the coronavirus crisis by turning green challenges into innovation opportunities. Mariya Gabriel, Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth said: “The €1 billion European Green Deal call is the last and biggest call under Horizon 2020. With innovation at its heart, this investment will accelerate a just and sustainable transition to a climate-neutral Europe by 2050. As we do not want anyone left behind in this systemic transformation, we call for specific actions to engage with citizens in novel ways and improve societal relevance and impact.” This Green Deal Call differs in important aspects from previous Horizon 2020 calls. Given the urgency of the challenges it addresses, it aims for clear, discernible results in the short to medium-term, but with a perspective of long-term change. There are fewer, but more targeted, larger and visible actions, with a focus on rapid scalability, dissemination and uptake. The projects funded under this call are expected to deliver results with tangible benefits in ten areas: Eight thematic areas reflecting the key workstreams of the European Green Deal: 1. Increasing climate ambition 2. Clean, affordable and secure energy 3. Industry for a clean and circular economy 4. Energy and resource-efficient buildings 5. Sustainable and smart mobility 6. Farm to fork 7. Biodiversity and ecosystems 8. Zero-pollution, toxic-free environments And two horizontal areas – strengthening knowledge and empowering citizens, which offer a longer-term perspective in achieving the transformations set out in the European Green Deal. The €1 billion investment will continue building Europe’s knowledge systems and infrastructures. The call includes opportunities for international cooperation in addressing the needs of less-developed nations, particularly in Africa, in the context of the Paris Agreement as well as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The deadline for submissions is 26 January 2021, with selected projects expected to start in autumn 2021. A Horizon 2020 Green Deal Call Info Day & Brokerage event will take place as part of the virtual European Research & Innovation Days that will take place from 22-24 September 2020.

Providing digital banking software requires a long-term commitment between the service provider and the financial institution. For Kevin Welsch, Brand and Marketing Manager at Tyfone, and Josh DeTar, VP of Sales and Marketing at Tyfone, that relationship is like a marriage. In this episode of Tech Qualified with Justin Brown, the duo talk about how they work to establish and sustain those relationships and how their approach has had to change due to COVID-19. Tyfone helps its customers make extensive digital change over a number of years. As a result, the company’s approach to sales and marketing is relationship intensive, enabling them to best help customers through the transition. “It really takes a partnership between the provider and the financial institution to make that happen,” says Josh. They used to rely on face-to-face interactions and trade shows for a lot of the relationship building. With the global spread of COVID-19, they’ve had to adjust their strategy to find similarly meaningful ways to connect with customers. “We've had to quickly divert a lot of funds and our way of thinking into content generation through creating relevant informative packets or just fun things that we're doing as a team and as a family to promote that relationship,” says Kevin. One thing never changes, and that’s the quality of the relationship they’re seeking to build.

Last year I caught up with my buddy Joe Galvin, Chief Research Officer of Vistage, a business advisory and executive coaching organization with a membership of more than 22,000 business owners and executive leaders. Recently I was able to catch up with him again to talk about a phrase that continues to get a lot of attention – digital transformation. But, despite all the focus and discussion we see on digital transformation, it’s digital transition Joe sees that is taking place at SMBs, which can definitely have a positive impact on business operations but does not come close to the potential transformative impact modern tech can have if given the chance.
Consumer insight is one of the most powerful tools marketers and publishers can hold. Discovering where your audiences are, and their interests and habits can not only allow you to talk to them in the right manner, with the right message, you can engagement them and grow your business. While mobile usage is on the raise, and people engage more and more with their mobile phones, there is one channel that leads the way in getting consumers engaged and that is the APP. Most businesses would love to have the engagement rate that some of the top APPS have, therefore we ask what can businesses learn from this APP behavoir? This episode explores the lessons we can learn from the way consumers engage with APP's and how they can be applied to everyday business operations.

The digital transition has been going on now for over a decade and although we see it and live it every day we will not have made the transition to a fully digital life until the work flows and processes around new technology are modernized and adapted. This means that companies need to look at digital transition with a 360-degree view. They have to understand what digitalization means to sales, marketing, customer relationship management, recruiting and just about every process in their company. And leaders must understand their people. Even the clearest digital strategy will fail if your people are unprepared to embrace it. As critical as defining where you want to be is, setting up the capabilities and processes that will enable it are even more critical. This episode looks at digital transition as a whole, with a focus on what it means for sales, marketing and the people that are leading us into the next generation of business.
A few weeks ago was in New York City and had the opportunity to get together with my buddy Lance Schad who works at Digital Transitions. We got to shoot some street photography with some really nice cameras. We also did some studio shooting and did an Art of Photography meetup at the Trailer Park Lounge on 23rd street which you see at the end of this video. Special thanks to all who came out! A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to visit Digital Transitions in New York City to do some photography in their studio. In this video, Doug Peterson shows us his method of focus stacking on the Phase One XF with the IQ3 Trichromatic back. You can do this with any camera. The challenge of macro photography is working with an extremely shallow depth of field. Phase One will do automatic calculations for the photos you want to stack but this can be done manually with any camera. The software we used for stitching the final image is called Zerene Stacker. It does have a 30 day trial if you want to try it out. https://zerenesystems.com/cms/stacker Art of Photography shirts: https://aop.threadless.com Music from Epidemic Sound: https://goo.gl/v5wWKr
Digital Transitions was kind enough to loan me a Phase One XF camera with the IQ3 Trichromatic back for my time in Arizona. Matt Beaty took me off roading through Arizona to get some epic landscape photos and test out the Phase One. The Phase One IQ3 is a 101 megapixel, medium format back. It uses a custom bayer filter design that separates Red, Green and Blue light in a new way that other digital cameras do no. In the RGB spectrum, there is always some degree of overlay. The Phase One design separates these a bit more than conventional cameras. The cost is about 1/3 an f-stop of light but the results are stunning. The Phase One XF is the most high-end camera system you can buy. I recently had a chance to use this setup with the IQ3 monochrome back. I was told this back is the first one in the US so I was pretty excited. This camera setup is a game changer. The Phase One IQ3 Monochrome back is one of the most exciting things to happen in camera design in the age of digital photography. The sensor weighs in at a cool 101 Megapixels and its designed to capture light past the visual spectrum. When you understand how to shape this using filters you have one of the most advanced, digital monochrome cameras ever made. The results are stunning. Special Thanks to Digital Transitions for loaning me the camera and to Rod Clark who makes the best filter system on the market for setting it all up! David Brookover is in town and he’s brought a few surprises. This week we will be taking a look at the Phase One XF camera with the IQ3 monochrome back. It comes in at 101 Megapixels and is the most expensive camera to ever be sold. There is only one of these in North America and you’re going to get to see it! Special thanks to Rod Clarke from Wine Country Camera and Digital Transitions for making this possible. On this episode of The Angry Millennial, we chat with Doug Peterson, wedding photographer and resident nerd & smooth talker at Digital Transitions, or as most everyone calls them, Phase One America. We had the opportunity to sit down with Doug at D/T's office in NYC, which is awesome by the way & definitely something every photographer should check out while in New York. We talk about how cameras are merely tools for photographers to use, the understandable lust some photographers have for medium format, why personal work will always be something to pursue, and even geek out about DSLR vs Medium Format debates, along with much more on this episode of The Angry Millennial. Remember to always use #theangrymillennial on social media + follow @millennialangry on Twitter to ask any questions you'd like any of the upcoming guests to answer during the show.
