In this episode of The Work We Do, we speak with Lynnette Neufeld, Director of FAO's Food and Nutrition Division, about the complex realities behind today's nutrition challenges.  The conversation explores the double burden of malnutrition, where undernutrition and obesity can coexist within the same country, community, household or even individual. We also discuss why healthy diets costs more and the difficulties of advancing nutrition policies in contexts shaped by conflicting interests, commercial pressure and the need for stronger policy coherence.  Lynnette reflects on her years working on the evaluation of Mexico's landmark conditional cash transfer programme, the mentors and experiences in Latin America that shaped her path from young researcher to senior leader in international nutrition, and her vision for FAO's role in the nutrition agenda: helping shift the focus from simply feeding the world to enabling access to and consumption of healthy diets for all.  00:00 Evidence over interests 00:45 Intro 00:59 The double burden of malnutrition 04:44 Policy responses 08:20 Why unhealthy food is cheaper 12:54 Nutrition beyond health 14:41 Ultra-processed foods 19:08 Commercial pressure 22:39 The role of advertising 25:30 Governments, business and civil society 30:14 Healthy diets and misinformation 32:51 FAO's role in nutrition 39:02 Mexico's cash transfer programme 42:17 Evaluation and implementation 49:00 Latin America and mentorship 01:10 Healthy diets

Why is it so hard to stop eating ultra-processed foods — even when you know they're hurting you? In Episode 13 of this 16-part series, Dr. Brendan McCarthy explains why the real problem is not just the food itself. The real problem is the loop: Cue or emotional state → Wanting → Bargaining → Consumption → Temporary relief → Crash/regret → Repeat. This episode explores how ultra-processed and hyper-palatable foods become attached to stress, boredom, loneliness, exhaustion, anxiety, and emotional discomfort — training the brain to seek relief through food. Key ideas from this episode: • Hunger is the body asking for nourishment • Wanting is the conditioned brain asking for the expected hit • The food is the bait. The loop is the trap. • The food breaks the feeling. It does not heal the source. • You cannot remove a counterfeit regulator without restoring real regulation. Dr. McCarthy breaks down why willpower alone often fails and why lasting change requires a physiologic off-ramp: stable meals, protein, fiber, hydration, sleep, movement, emotional regulation, cue reduction, social planning, and relapse repair. This is not about “perfect eating.” It is about building a life where food is no longer your primary regulator of stress, comfort, or identity. If you've ever felt trapped in cravings, emotional eating, binge-restrict cycles, or constant food noise, this episode is designed to help you understand the mechanism behind the loop — and how to begin leaving it.

Dr. Sunil Gupta explained that self-medication or following advice from neighbours and relatives can be dangerous, as every diabetes patient requires personalized treatment based on age, weight, blood pressure, heart, kidney and liver health, family history, and his own lifestyle. He further highlighted the dangers of alcohol, which can damage the pancreas and lead to secondary diabetes, sometimes requiring lifelong insulin. Kavita Gupta clarified that “sugar-free” does not mean “calorie-free.” Such foods may still contain fat or artificial sweeteners and can increase blood sugar and weight if consumed excessively. She advised limiting sweets and avoiding energy drinks and sugary beverages, especially for children. The experts recommended healthier options like buttermilk, coconut water, lemon water, and mango panna. They also emphasized eating three main meals and three small snacks to avoid weakness caused by long gaps between meals. On today's Good Day Health Show - ON DEMAND…Dr. Jack Stockwell, a NUCCA Chiropractor and GAPS Practitioner in SLC, UT (866.867.5070 | ForbiddenDoctor.com | JackStockwell.com), covers the the biggest news in the health and wellness space from a holistic, naturopath perspective. In this episode, Dr. Jack begins with the body's need for iodine and why it seems to have dropped off the medical radar in recent decades. The iodine's role plays into a healthy thyroid gland. So, why are we depriving ourselves of iodine? Additionally, Iodine is critical during pregnancy for producing maternal thyroid hormones that directly regulate fetal brain development, neurogenesis, and myelination. Severe deficiency can cause permanent, irreversible intellectual disabilities and a reduction in child IQ by 8 to 10 points. Even mild-to-moderate deficiency can impair a child's cognitive function, language development, and fine motor skillsHere are the key impacts on fetal brain development: Essential Thyroid Function: Iodine is a key component of thyroid hormones. In the first trimester, the fetus relies entirely on maternal thyroid hormones, which require sufficient iodine.Brain Structure Development: Proper iodine levels are essential for neurogenesis (creation of neurons), neural migration, and myelination (insulation of nerve fibers).Irreversible Deficits: Severe iodine deficiency is the leading cause of preventable intellectual disability worldwide. It can lead to cretinism, characterized by severe intellectual impairment and neurological damage.Cognitive and Motor Skills: Mild to moderate deficiencies have been linked to lower IQ, reduced verbal skills, and lower overall cognitive scores in children. Some important considerations: Increased Demand: Iodine requirements increase during pregnancy due to higher production of thyroid hormones and transfer to the fetus.Optimal Range: While deficiency is harmful, excessive iodine intake can also cause health issues.Prevention: Ensuring adequate iodine intake through iodized salt or prenatal supplements, especially in deficient areas, is key to preventing these developmental issues. Website: GoodDayHealthShow.com Social Media: @GoodDayNetworks

In this episode, Dr. Jack begins with the scam that is the MTHFR gene scam, a widespread marketing fraud involving MTHFR (methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase) genetic testing.  Dr. Jack addresses what it is, why it has gained so much attention in recent years, and whether the concern surrounding it is truly warranted. Drawing on research from the past decade, Dr. Jack breaks down the science behind MTHFR deficiencies, including their connection to conditions like hyperhomocysteinemia and homocystinuria, as well as milder elevations in homocysteine levels.Rather than fueling fear, Dr. Jack offers a grounded and practical perspective, explaining why routine testing for the MTHFR gene may not be necessary for most people. He emphasizes focusing on overall health and lifestyle choices instead of getting caught up in genetic testing trends, and he shares his recommendations for supporting the body naturally. The conversation also shifts to a powerful and often overlooked aspect of wellness: the body's own antioxidant production. Dr. Jack reveals what he considers the most powerful antioxidant your body produces, why it plays such a critical role in protecting your cells, and how you can support your body's ability to maintain optimal levels.Packed with clarity, myth-busting insights, and actionable advice, this episode is a great reminder that good health doesn't have to be complicated, it just needs to be understood.Lastly, Doug joins Dr. Jack to answer listener questions, like if the weight loss drugs are worth it and the approach to intermittent fasting.  Website: GoodDayHealthShow.com Social Media: @GoodDayNetworks

On today's Good Day Health Show - ON DEMAND…Host Doug Stephan and Dr. Ken Kronhaus of Lake Cardiology (352-735-1400) cover a number of topics affecting our health. First up, Doug and Dr. Ken begin with a simple smell test that can  possibly help prevent Alzheimer's by early detection. While sense of smell is important, so are the other senses. This leads to a conversation between Doug and Dr. Ken on how loss of senses can affect the brain, and vice versa. When it comes to hearing, there has been data that shows a loss of the auditory sense can lead to a loss in memory and create a higher likelihood of developing a neurologically-degenerative disorder. When patients find themselves hard of hearing, they're a lot less likely to seek medical assistance and get hearing aids. This raises the question of “Why,” especially when you consider the fact that if someone has trouble seeing or some kind of vision issues, they seek medical advice from an optometrist without hesitation and start wearing glasses, contacts, or get corrective surgery when applicable. Continuing on with brain health and the potential for developing Alzheimer's, Doug poses the question to Dr. Ken on whether or not animals get Alzheimer's. Dr. Ken states some animals are prone to age-related degenerative diseases, while Alzheimer's is typically a human issue, though some primates have showed similar neurological results. However, we don't have to worry about our fur babies getting it, as dogs and cats may age, they won't develop Alzheimer's. In female health news, the FDA has approved the first home-based OTC/non-prescriptive diagnostic test for various sexually transmitted infections in women. Then, the conversation shifts to a focus on sugar substitutes, and why they may be just as harmful as regular sugar, but for a different reason. Doug and Dr. Ken break it down, and why Sucralose (the primary sweetener in Splenda) could increase your appetite and feelings of hunger. Going a step further, what happens for children of obese mothers. It's a focus of a new study that most children who struggle with obesity, typically have an obese mother. It may not always be as simple as what people eat, and mores a genetic makeup and predisposition to obesity. On the other hand, a mother's poor choices in eating and health habits can have a negative affect on their children, leading them down the same path. Lastly, Doug and Dr. Ken address listener questions, starting with the Avian Influenza outbreaks and how humans are affected, and potentially infected, especially for those who work on the farm. Plus, Doug uses his own health status to share a relatable story of needing procedures and the out of pocket price for the insurance company, and how much the actual doctor's receive.  Website: GoodDayHealthShow.com Social Media: @GoodDayNetworks

On today's Good Day Health Show - ON DEMAND… Dr. Jack begins with the worth of synthetic antioxidants and other nutritional supplements (AKA the “fake stuff”). We know therapeutic foods are best, and which ultra-processed carbohydrates are best to be avoided. We know this. So, why I it still so difficult for many people to follow healthier practices? Dr. Jack continues this topic with an example from a trip abroad and the freshness of his meals and how he felt within days of eating in such a healthy, natural, straight from the earth type of way. Dr. Jack drives the point by sharing a conversation he had with a patient on what the patient needs to eat to turn his health around. When eating copious amounts of whole foods to better your health isn't truly feasible, whole-food supplements come in to play. Whole food and phytonutrient supplements are missing in most American diets, and Dr. Jack is sharing how you can adjust your diet and nutritional intake to better your overall health. Then, Doug and Dr. Jack link up to address listener questions, including health guidelines from MAHA, impact from Bayer/Monsanto on health and the effects of glyphosate. But like any machine, despite having an electrical mind of its own, it is not infallible—when its rhythm drifts or its mechanics strain, the impact is felt far beyond the chest. From more complex cases like heart failure and detrimental arrhythmias to the more-known feared heart attack caused by high cholesterol, it leads to questions — What can we do to safeguard the health of our heart? What should one do when they experience chest pain? And how do we learn to listen to the heart's warning signs before they become life-altering events? In this episode, we are joined by Dr. Diala Steitieh, MD, a board-certified cardiologist and assistant professor of clinical medicine, focusing on hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and sports cardiology, based in New York City.Dr. Steitieh received her MD from Weill Cornell Medicine in Qatar and completed her Internal Medicine Residency and Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical College. Let's take a look at Nemoria arizonaria. I'm sure you were just talking about him at lunch, right? It's a caterpillar! That's what a lot of us know him as. Now, some caterpillars are born in the spring and some are born in the summer. The spring bunch I understand, eat oak catkins. That's the dangling flowers on an oak tree. And within days, guess what? They look as fuzzy as their meal was that they ate just a few days ago. Oh, let's take the summer bunch now. They eat smooth leaves because that's what's out then. Would you believe it? They become smooth caterpillars. It's amazing! Caterpillars exemplify that old adage, "You are what you eat." They literally are. That doesn't mean you're going to begin to look like your lunch I hope. That's a scary thought. But in another way, the caterpillar dynamic is happening to you. I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "Healthy Diet, Healthy Heart." Our word for today from the Word of God comes from Philippians 4:8. "Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable. If anything is excellent or praiseworthy, think about such things." That's dietary advice. You think it's not about eating? Well it is. It's about what you consume mentally and spiritually; what you allow to come into your mind, your ears, your eyes, your heart. And if it isn't noble, and true, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable, you've got no business listening to it. You have no business dining on it mentally. The Bible says, "As a man thinks in his heart so is he." You are what you eat. That's why Proverbs 4:23 says, "Guard your heart. Be careful what you let in there; it's the wellspring of life." Your mind is being programmed and shaped even today by what you hear, what you watch, what you laugh at, and your music. The subtle thing is you don't feel like anything's happening. You don't say, "Oh, I am now being programmed. I am now being influenced." You don't know it. But input is what creates thoughts, and thoughts become fantasies and attitudes. And those attitudes eventually become actions. It's too late then. You can't stop this process. You can't feel it happening, and you can't stop it any more than a caterpillar can say, "I don't want to become bumpy like what I ate." Or, "smooth like what I ate." You keep tuning in to depressing input, and you're going to start to feel a darkness growing inside of you. You keep fueling yourself with bad news about a certain person and all the things that are wrong about them, and you're going to find a growing bitterness and criticism in your spirit. You keep letting in sexually stimulating images, and increasingly it will affect how you view the opposite sex and your own sexuality. See, the media is a lot more than entertainment. It's ideas and it's values wrapped up in bright attractive packages. I've decided I have to fight sin at the door. James 1:15 is so revealing, "After desire has conceived it gives birth to sin, and sin when it is full grown gives birth to death." You've got to fight it as a desire. Your most important choices are not so much about your actions; they're about your input. Actions all come from what you eat mentally. For caterpillars and for Christians, diet is destiny.
