All the pups we love—from chihuahuas to great danes—are descendants of the mighty gray wolf. But how did we end up with so many breeds? The story that's often told is that dog diversity really took off with the Victorians in the 1800s, but new research is unleashing a different tale. Host Flora Lichtman talks with bioarchaeologist Carly Ameen about the diversification of dogs. Plus, a long-running experiment to tame silver foxes is cluing us into how domestication happens. Canine researcher Erin Hecht gives us a glimpse into the experiment and what it tells us about domesticated brains.Guests:Dr. Carly Ameen is a bioarcheologist and lecturer at the University of Exeter in England.Dr. Erin Hecht is an evolutionary biologist at Harvard in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Transcripts for each episode are available within 1-3 days at sciencefriday.com. After purchasing a three-unit property in Massachusetts, Rose wonders whether it's worth managing property taxes on her own or sticking with lender-managed escrow accounts. Marco breaks down how escrow works, why lenders strongly prefer it, and how PITI payments simplify long-term property management. He also tackles the common concern of “interest-free money” sitting with the mortgage company, weighing the real opportunity cost against the value of time, simplicity, and scalability—especially as an investor grows from one property to many. If you've ever been confused or frustrated by escrow, this episode will bring clarity—listen now, subscribe for more real-world investing insights, and send in your own questions to be featured on a future episode.

What does it take for states to expand access to substance use disorder treatment and build stronger, more sustainable partnerships between Medicaid and public health?  In Massachusetts, leaders changed policies around provider models to increase access to care for opioid use disorder: Frances McGaffey, Manager of Substance Use Prevention and Treatment Initiative at The Pew Charitable Trusts, explains how pairing providers with dedicated nursing support has helped remove barriers to prescribing buprenorphine, expand the addiction workforce, and dramatically increase access to care. She also shares why the state's decision to extend this model to alcohol and stimulant use disorders is a critical response to a changing overdose crisis, and what other states can do to replicate this success.  Then, Corey Caldwell, Senior Policy Analyst at the National Association of Medicaid Directors discusses the new Medicaid Leaders Playbook for Building Public Health Partnerships, developed in collaboration with ASTHO. Corey outlines practical, real-world steps Medicaid and public health agencies can take to align priorities, address funding and workforce challenges, launch small but impactful pilot projects, and build trust across systems.Understanding Current U.S. Measles Outbreaks and Elimination Status | ASTHO

Welcome to Revolution@250, a special production of PreserveCast, in partnership with Preservation Maryland and the Maryland Center for History and Culture. Our hosts are Katie Caljean, President and CEO of the Maryland Center for History and Culture and Nicholas Redding, host of PreserveCast and President and CEO of Preservation Maryland. In 1818, 42 years after the shot heard around the world cracked across a Massachusetts field, John Adams was asked to reflect on the meaning and impact of the American Revolution. In this brief letter, Adams explained that,   The American Revolution was not a common Event. Its Effects and Consequences have already been over a great part of the globe. And when and where are they to cease? But what do we mean by the American Revolution? Do we mean the American War? The Revolution was effected before the war commenced. The Revolution was in the Minds and Hearts of the People.  Revolutionary thought and thinking did not end with the Treaty of Paris, nor did it begin at Lexington and Concord. In this special podcast series, we'll explore the revolutionary ideas that were catalyzed and accelerated by the self-evident idea that all men are created equal and what bold and new thinking that declaration has forged.  In our first episode we discuss abolitionist John Brown with historian Dennis Frye.

From Discovery to Delivery: Charting Progress in Gynecologic Oncology, hosted by Ursula A. Matulonis, MD, brings expert insights into the most recent breakthroughs, evolving standards, and emerging therapies across gynecologic cancers. Dr Matulonis is chief of the Division of Gynecologic Oncology and the Brock-Wilcon Family Chair at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, as well as a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, both in Boston, Massachusetts. In this episode, Dr Matulonis sat down with guest Rebecca Porter, MD, PhD. Dr Porter is a physician at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and an assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.Drs Matulonis and Porter discussed the evolving role of immunotherapy in gynecologic cancer management, focusing on recent clinical breakthroughs and future directions. They noted that although high-grade serous ovarian cancer has historically been refractory to immunotherapy, the phase 3 KEYNOTE-B96 trial (NCT05116189) demonstrated an efficacy benefit with the addition of pembrolizumab to weekly paclitaxel for patients with platinum-resistant disease. In particular, improvements in overall survival were noted in the PD-L1–positive patient population. Dr Porter attributed this success to the metronomic weekly dosing of paclitaxel, which may increase neoantigen levels and favorably alter the tumor microenvironment (TME).Moreover, the experts highlighted how immunotherapy has already become the standard of care for patients with mismatch repair–deficient advanced or recurrent endometrial cancer. However, they explained that for the mismatch repair–proficient population, this benefit is less clear and appears most significant in patients with measurable disease or specific molecular subtypes. They added that although circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) assay results correlate with treatment outcomes, ctDNA is currently not an actionable biomarker for determining treatment duration or selection.Lastly, Drs Matulonis and Porter reported that the field of gynecologic oncology is shifting toward combination therapies and novel platforms beyond standard checkpoint inhibitors. Treatment advances include bispecific and trispecific antibodies that engage multiple cell types or signals; as well as adoptive cellular therapies, such as CAR T-cell and CAR natural killer–cell therapies. Ultimately, the experts concluded that the goal of managing challenging-to-treat diseases like ovarian cancer is to use combinatorial approaches—incorporating vaccines, anti-angiogenic therapies, and chemotherapy—to overcome the immunosuppressive nature of the TME.

The Bee Gees are one of the most influential and enduring acts in popular music history, a band whose songs have soundtracked generations and transcended genres, eras and trends. Formed by brothers Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb, the group's journey began long before global fame, rooted in family, harmony and an almost instinctive musical bond.Born on the Isle of Man and raised between England and Australia, the Gibb brothers began performing together as kids. Music wasn't just an interest — it was the family language. By the late '50s, the brothers were already writing songs, honing their harmonies and learning the discipline of performance. Their early success in Australia laid the groundwork for an international career that would soon explode. The Bee Gees' first major breakthrough came in the late '60s with emotionally rich, melodic songs like “To Love Somebody,” “Massachusetts,” “Words,” and “I've Gotta Get a Message to You.” Their close, often aching harmonies and introspective songwriting set them apart. In the '70s, the Bee Gees achieved one of the most dramatic transformations in music history. With Barry's soaring falsetto, the brothers became the undisputed kings of the disco era. Songs like “Stayin' Alive,” “Night Fever,” “How Deep Is Your Love,” and “You Should Be Dancing” dominated charts worldwide, largely through their work on the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack — one of the best-selling albums of all time. Their songwriting partnership extended beyond their own recordings, producing hits for artists including Barbra Streisand, Diana Ross, Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton.Yet behind the global phenomenon was a tight-knit family unit. It was within this world that Stephen Gibb, Barry's eldest son, grew up. Raised surrounded by music, Stephen witnessed the Bee Gees at work from an unusually intimate vantage point. As a child, he watched his father and uncles write, rehearse and refine songs, often assuming that such musical brilliance was simply part of everyday life. Only later did he realise just how extraordinary that environment was.Stephen chose not to follow directly in his family's musical footsteps. Instead of pop harmonies, he gravitated toward hard rock and heavy metal, inspired by bands like Van Halen and Def Leppard. Determined to carve out his own identity, he built his own career. It was a conscious decision to step out of the Bee Gees' long shadow while still deeply respecting it.Tragedy struck the Gibb family with the loss of Andy Gibb in 1988, followed by Maurice Gibb in 2003 and Robin Gibb in 2012. These losses marked the end of the Bee Gees as a performing group, but not the end of their music. Barry continued performing and recording, often with Stephen by his side. Over time, Stephen became a trusted musical collaborator and guitarist in Barry's touring band, providing both musical and emotional support as his father carried the legacy forward alone. In 2021, Barry released Greenfields: The Gibb Brothers' Songbook, a roots-influenced reimagining of classic Bee Gees songs, recorded with a stellar lineup of artists including Dolly Parton, Keith Urban and Alison Krauss. The album was widely praised and served as a poignant tribute to his brothers and their shared catalogue. It also marked the closing chapter of Barry's recording career, as he has since stepped into a well-earned and contented retirement.Today, the Bee Gees' legacy remains immense. Their songs continue to resonate because they speak to universal emotions — love, heartbreak, resilience and hope — delivered through melodies that feel both intimate and timeless. Through Barry, and through the respect and care shown by Stephen, that legacy is protected with dignity rather than spectacle. The Bee Gees were never just a band. They were a family, bound by blood, harmony and an extraordinary gift for songwriting — a gift that continues to echo across generations.Today Stephen Gibb joins us with the story of The Bee Gees.

1981 - Winchendon, Massachusetts. On January 30, 1981, 19-year-old Nancy Williams picked up a last-minute shift at the Cumberland Farms in Winchendon, Massachusetts. Just two hours before closing, an unknown assailant entered the store, robbed it, and brutally stabbed Nancy, leaving her for dead behind the counter. The crime stunned locals, who struggled to believe something so violent could happen in their quiet town. Even more unsettling was the thought that the person responsible may have simply blended back into the community—never identified, never held accountable. Now, 45 years later, Nancy's case is being revived in the hope that renewed attention, advances in forensic technology, and fresh tips can finally bring justice for Nancy. Cumberland Farms is now offering a $25K reward for information that leads to the conviction in Nancy's case. But this year there is a 15-point spread between the first and second books! As usual, the first-place book was a novel, but the second-place book was nonfiction—a first ever for that. Usually, nonfiction doesn't show up until well into the list's mid-teens. Thanks to everyone who shared their top tens– you help grow our TBR lists! Reminder that we have a Top 10 shelf on our Bookshop.org page for purchase and for you to learn more about each of the books. We also talk about our 2026 Reading Intentions. Riding Shotgun With Charlie #246 Nolan Howard 617 Defense It took a while before I was able to have Nolan Howard on the show. In the meantime, he had stories about him and 617 Defense in the Boston Globe and he was on Bearing Arms' Cam & Co a few times. I'm glad we finally got a chance to do an interview. We've run into each other at a few events hosted by the NRA's state affiliate, Gun Owners Action League. In the fall of 2025, Nolan hosted a Friends of the NRA dinner in Boston, which I don't think ever happened before.   Nolan grew up in Boston and the Metrowest area of Boston. Like many young kids, he played video games like Medal of Honor and learned about firearms through them. Having firearms in the house wasn't something they did. But when President Trump was in office the first time, he knew something wasn't right and it was probably time to learn about firearms and get into them.  He went to a local shooting school, Mass Firearms School, where I cut my teeth as an instructor and started shooting regularly. He had a friend who helped, mentored, and guided him though shooting and starting 617 Defense. Being in the black community, there was a lack of opportunity to go shooting at a range. Boston is a "range desert" with only one range and zero gun stores in Boston proper. His objective was to keep others in the black informed on what is going on with the firearm community. Most of the ranges in Massachusetts are private clubs. There are only a handful of public ranges across the Commonwealth.   His route to being an instructor was through the NRA's Home Firearm Safety, Basics of Pistol Shooting, and becoming a Range Safety Officer. After becoming a certified instructor, he teamed up with others and started offering classes. He's done classes in Boston, but moved onto the Mansfield Fish and Game, which is about an hour from Boston.  For a while, Nolan was working with the National African American Gun Association (NAAGA). They do classes monthly for its members and keep them up to date on goings on with the political climate in the firearm community. Since we filmed this show, he's moved on and is working on his own group.   We spent some time talking about Chapter 135, the law "Modernizing Gun Laws" in Massachusetts. It has been nothing but a sham. It goes after the license to carry holders and gun owners by turning them into criminals for homemade firearms and carrying pre-1994 so-called high capacity magazines. It makes the training more challenging, too, for instructors like Nolan. The new requirements have live fire, a written exam, suicide prevention, injury prevention, and disengagement training. Once the law went into effect, neither the state nor the state police had any type of curriculum for instructors. They have until April 2026 to develop this.  When the topic comes up, people want to talk about national politics. But Nolan wants to get people focused on local politics. These are the people that can affect how things happen around you and affect you directly. But many citizens just vote in the presidential elections. The local politicians don't see how the gun law changes don't make any changes in how things are done and let criminals back out on the street.  The politicians also don't understand that the laws make more hurdles for the folks who take training and pass background checks. Adding live fire is also going to drive up the cost for instructors, which gets passed onto the consumer. This makes classes more unaffordable and time consuming. However, people do need to train and practice with their firearms.   Overall, I think Nolan is doing a great job in Boston. He's getting lots of local and national recognition for the time he's been involved as an instructor. He's busy teaching classes and taking classes to be able to offer more to his clients.    Favorite quotes: "How can I be different from every other instructor? How can I keep up with current events?" "As most black people, we don't focus on the local politics. Some do. Not Many."| "You want to shoot one round for 10 minutes? Ok." "How come they don't give us this information? I say cuz they don't want you to know."   617 Defense Website https://617defense.com/  617 Defense IG https://www.instagram.com/617defense/  617 Defense YouTube https://www.youtube.com/@617Defense  617 Defense Facebook https://www.facebook.com/p/617-Defense   Second Amendment Foundation https://secure.anedot.com/saf/donate?sc=RidingShotgun   Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms https://www.ccrkba.org/   Please support the Riding Shotgun With Charlie sponsors and supporters.   US Law Shield Legal Defense for Self Defense. In this episode of The Box of Oddities, Kat and Jethro explore two unsettling, very real stories where history was quietly sealed away—literally and figuratively. First, we descend into the forgotten basement of Danvers State Hospital in Massachusetts, where renovation crews in the 1990s uncovered a bricked-over corridor that didn't exist on any blueprints. Inside were intact treatment rooms, restraint fixtures, and medical equipment from an era psychiatric institutions would rather forget. No records. No documentation. And once discovered, the space was quietly sealed again. Then we shift to a powerful and often overlooked chapter in American medical history: Freedom House Ambulance Service in Pittsburgh. In the 1960s, a group of Black paramedics—trained at an unprecedented level—quietly invented modern emergency medical care. They saved hundreds of lives, revolutionized on-scene treatment, and laid the foundation for today's EMS systems… before being erased from history when the city took over the program. Along the way, we talk about institutional amnesia, medical ethics, abandoned practices, historical erasure, and why the scariest stories are often the ones that actually happened. Because sometimes the question isn't what's haunting a place—It's what was deliberately forgotten. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

We open the lines to hear reactions to yet another fatal shooting in Minneapolis – this time of a 37-year-old ICU nurse, Alex Pretti. Boston Globe editor Brian McGrory weighs in on coverage of protests in Minneapolis and the Trump administration's attempts to lie their way out of another extrajudicial killing, and the media's role in calling out those lies. Michael Curry sits on the national board of the NAACP and leads Massachusetts' community health centers. He joins us to discuss ICE's incursion into Minneapolis – where robust social and refugee/immigrant services turned it into a target by the federal government. And live from Minneapolis, we also hear from Leslie Redmond, former president of the Minneapolis NAACP. Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan on how local law enforcement in Minneapolis is on a collision course with federal agents, and local leaders can do to keep their communities safe. MIT economist Jon Gruber gives a macroeconomic view on President Trump's action on the world stage and how he's shredding our international alliances. Massachusetts Congressman Seth Moulton has called for ICE to be prosecuted for the killings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti. He joins us to explain why he thinks the agency needs to be defunded.

Key Takeaways One networking conversation at a conference led to tens of thousands in referral work across multiple universities—proof that in-person connections still outperform any automated sales funnel Hiring and collaborating with people you see as "competitors" creates a healthier business ecosystem and almost always comes back to benefit you Being an introvert doesn't disqualify you from networking—Paige forced herself to attend one event per week when starting out, and it fundamentally changed her business and confidence When pivoting your business focus (like Paige's shift from brand work to schools/nonprofits), don't expect overnight success—it's a longer play that requires patience and consistent effort About Paige Burns Paige Burns is the award-winning founder and creative director of Main Paige Media, a women-owned video production agency based in Beverly, Massachusetts. And so let’s say you make some New Year’s resolutions or you’re in the middle of a transition like retirement and you’re in the middle of that change and you think to yourself,  this shouldn’t be so hard and I should have figured this out by now. But what those thoughts do is they actually only tighten that knot. So if we’re looking at getting unstuck, you know, the way that I teach is we have to have this willingness to soften, to stop pushing, to actually sit with what’s here, even if it’s uncomfortable. And from what I’ve learned and what I’ve seen, this is really the ground of transformation. Because when we allow ourselves, Joe, just to be exactly where we are with all the uncertainty, with all the doubt, with all the longing, then we begin to loosen the grip on all the old habitual ways of being. And our heart opens. And in that openness, something new can emerge. So I invite you all to not push through, but just to rest in that middle place and let the aspiration be there, but also let the discomfort be there. And let yourself almost be held by this knowing that the moment that you’re in right now is actually part of the path.” On Mindfulness…for Type As “And this energy is very, very powerful, but it can also become a kind of armor and it can protect Type A people from seeing themselves, from vulnerability, from uncertainty. So, if I was talking to a Tai A personality who was a skeptic, I would first of all say it is mindfulness is amazing for Type A personalities. And what if you didn’t need to fix anything right now? What if there was nothing to improve, but just something to notice? Because at the heart of mindfulness, we’re not looking to change our nature or our personality. What we’re doing is we’re inviting you to become more intimate with yourself, to sit beside that aspect of yourself that strives and maybe ask, what am I afraid of and what am I avoiding? Because often as a Type A personality, what we’re avoiding is the discomfort of being with ourselves as we are. But if we can soften that resistance, even for a breath, even for 10 minutes a day, I tell you, something extraordinary happens. And we begin to feel so much more alive, more connected to ourselves. The endless, amazing results of meditation, our relationships change. We just deal with everything differently. We become more whole. So it’s really good for us to understand, which is why mindfulness is used in so many, you know, big companies around the world, is that mindfulness isn’t an enemy of ambition. It’s really a way to return to the ground beneath your striving, to be able to see that ground clearly, to feel deeply, to live more fully, which is why I totally believe it’s a superpower.” On Why Happiness is an Inside Job “The biggest misconception that I know is that people believe that happiness comes from outside of themselves. And that is such a mic drop moment to understand that happiness doesn’t. Happiness is an internal job. And the wonderful thing about that is it means that we’re in control of it. It means that if you want to be happier, you don’t have to be rich. You don’t have to be powerful. You don’t have to be the most beautiful person in the world. I remember some years ago going to Las Vegas to hear Lady Gaga sing. And she was doing these kind of acoustic jazz Tony Bennett style concerts. It were really incredible. She was getting paid a million dollars a gig, Joe, and it was extraordinary. Here she is. She’s super wealthy. She’s beautiful. She’s successful. She’s powerful. And it was shocking for her to talk about how incredibly unhappy she is. So I think that’s one of the biggest things we need to understand is that all the things that we’re sold to believe will make us happy actually don’t. Because if they did, we would be able to look around the world to so many of the people that have all of them. And we can wonder why they’re not happy. So when we begin to understand that happiness is an inside job, then we actually have the incredible power to take control of it. So I think that that is probably the biggest misconception, but also the most powerful thing about it. And so that means that we need to learn to work with the thing that drives our happiness and our suffering, which is our mind. And if we can learn to work with our mind, then we can change our whole experience of the world.”

Two state laws could transform labor relations in the United States. In both California and Massachusetts, statutes now allow rideshare drivers to organize at the sectoral level: one union could represent all drivers in each state. Both represent a bold experiment—one that departs from the way labor relations has been regulated for more than a century. And each could produce the biggest spike in unionization in decades. But will they work? Will drivers actually organize? And if they do, will the result bump up against federal law? Our expert panel will break down the historical, legal, and policy implications of these bold new laws.Featuring:David Madland, Senior Fellow & Senior Adviser, American Worker Project, Center for American ProgressWilliam L. Fergie and his mission are the story in a new documentary, “All About the Money,” premiering at this year's Sundance Film Festival. We speak with the film's director, Sinead O'Shea.
