Do you hate the gym? This might be diet cultures fault.Today, I'm chatting with Maggie Lawlor, owner of Simple Strength Gym in Leixlip, who specialises in non-diet fitness for women.Maggie first got into gym-based training as a runner trying to avoid injuries, but over the years, her passion grew. She eventually became a coach, left her job as a nurse, and took the leap to open her own gym.We talk about:Making the move from nursing to coaching and how she gradually built her client base before going all inHer first pregnancy and how it led her deep into research on strength training for womenThe pressure on women to “bounce back” after pregnancy and why that mindset needs to changeThe physical benefits of strength training before and after birthHow experienced lifters sometimes struggle to adjust intensity during pregnancyListening to your body and why rest is not a sign of weaknessThe grip of diet culture on women and the fear of losing fitness or gaining weight instead of focusing on growing a humanWhy every woman should see a pelvic floor physio postpartumRunning a marathon while breastfeeding (!?)The dangers of comparing yourself to celebrities or athletes with completely different circumstancesWe then dive into Maggie's approach at Simple Strength Gym:Why so many people think they hate gyms when really, they just hate the association with punishment and guiltHow she reassures new clients—no weigh-ins, no unrealistic expectations, just movement that feels goodThe health benefits of exercise we all take for granted until they're goneWhy smaller studio gyms can be a better fit for people nervous about startingThe importance of paying attention to the content you consume and how it shapes your self-imageThe sneaky ways diet culture hides in fitness challenges—if it looks like a diet, it probably isWhy true healthy habits aren't flashy, but they actually workHow fitness should be simple—if someone overcomplicates it, that's a red flagAccepting that some days will be better than others and that doesn't make you a failureMaggie finishes with some brilliant advice to leave you thinking. To find out more or work with Maggie, you can find her at:@simple.strength.leixliphttps://www.simplestrengthleixlip.com/If you are interested in working with me you can find me :Equestrian Instagram: @stronginthesaddle_Equestrian Tiktok: @ stronginthesaddleFREE Happy Hips for horseriding PDFFREE Supple Shoulders for the Saddle PDFWebsite: www.chrissyhawkins.com

Ann reported on The Winter People by Jennifer McMahon (Anchor 2015)West Hall, Vermont, has always been a town of strange disappearances and old legends. Themost mysterious is that of Sara Harrison Shea, who, in 1908, was found dead in the field behindher house just months after the tragic death of her daughter. Now, in present day, nineteen-year-old Ruthie lives in Sara's farmhouse with her mother, Alice, and her younger sister. Alice has always insisted that they live off the grid, a decision that hasweighty consequences when Ruthie wakes up one morning to find that Alice has vanished. Inher search for clues, she is startled to find a copy of Sara Harrison Shea's diary hidden beneaththe floorboards of her mother's bedroom. As Ruthie gets sucked into the historical mystery, shediscovers that she's not the only person looking for someone that they've lost. But she may bethe only one who can stop history from repeating itself.Creepy, goosebumpy, scary ghost stories aren't only for cool fall evenings. It turns out that themiddle of January in remote Vermont when it's buried in snow is also the perfect setting for apsychological thriller filled with ghosts.Written by Jennifer McMahon, this is two stories in one with the common factor the setting of anold farmhouse on a secluded road in the very small town of West Hall, Vermont. The storiesalternate: One takes place in January 1908, including flashbacks about 20 years earlier. Theother takes place in the present day, also in January. This thickly-wooded homestead includesan outcropping of giant boulders that looks so much like a hand, the area has always beencalled Devil's Hand. Wander too far into the woods, and you might not make it out alive.Something is going on here, and those who have seen it believe there are ghosts in this spookyforest. It's January 1908. Sara Harrison Shea and her husband Martin Shea live in the farmhouse withtheir little girl, Gertie, who is 8 years old. One day she is found dead, having fallen 50 feet downa well. Sara collapses in grief, but writes her fears, anguish, and hopes into a secret diary. Saracomes to an untimely and gruesome death, which remains the stuff of legend in West Hall ahundred years later. She hid her diary in one of the hidey-holes in the old farmhouse, and manypeople want to find it because in it she supposedly left instructions on how to raise the dead tolife.Meanwhile in the present-day, Alice Washburne lives in the same farmhouse with her twodaughters, Ruthie, 19, and Fawn, 6. Alice, who is widowed, has lived off the grid for about 20years. No computer. No cell phone. No links to anyone in the world. Even in this small town, noteveryone knows who she is. On New Year's Day, Alice disappears. More than anything, Alicedislikes the police, so Ruthie knows she shouldn't call the cops. (This is one of several plotpoints—some small, some big—that make the mystery work. If Ruthie did call the cops orsomeone didn't lock her cell phone in the car so she didn't have it when she really needed it,things would have worked out quite differently. A little cheesy, perhaps.) The two stories—pastand present—converge as Ruthie discovers dark secrets about her own past and thosesurrounding this strange house. This is one of the creepiest stories I have ever read, and while the plots from both time periodsare rather farfetched, the book is a page-turner. It will keep you up past your bedtime, and if youread it then, you may very well have nightmares.Tracey's book was A Dark and Snowy Night by Sally Goldenbaum, #5 in the Seaside KnittersMystery Series (Kensington 2022)It's holiday season in the picturesque, coastal town of Sea Harbor, Massachusetts! But in USAToday bestselling author Sally Goldenbaum's latest Seaside Knitters Society mystery, theknitting club sleuths will have to take a break from crafting cozy Christmas gifts to investigate amurder at the Mayor's holiday party.Winter in Sea Harbor is a feast for the senses—crackling bonfires, the scent of snow in the saltyair, carols ringing out on the village green. This year, the Seaside Knitters have a sackful ofobligations in addition to their usual Christmas preparations. Izzy is so overloaded with knittingclasses that she hires an extra salesperson, but the new addition has trouble fitting into the yarnshop's holiday spirit. Cass, juggling the stresses of running her lobster fishery, has finally founda nanny for her active toddler. Molly Flanigan seems practically perfect in every way—until shesuddenly disappears, taking Cass's beloved rescue mutt with her...Meanwhile, the holidays are kicking off in style at Mayor Beatrice Scaglia's holiday party, wherea well-dressed crowd admires the mayor's sumptuous new home and the celebrity chef cateringthe event. An additional treat for Ben and Nell Endicott at the festive affair is reconnecting with adear college friend, Oliver Bishop. But it's not just reunions and the appetizers that are to-die-for.Before the party-goers can toast the beginning of Sea Harbor's festive season, the chef—andyoung wife of the Endicott's old Harvard friend—is found dead beneath the mistletoe.Izzy, Birdie, Nell, and Cass must uncover the pattern to these mysteries to remove suspicionfrom those they love, bring a murderer to justice—and keep Sea Harbor's holiday magic fromvanishing into the chill winter air...TRIVIALast week's question was:Which mystery author was also a barrister?a. Linda Howardb. Patricia Moyesc. Eileen Dewshurstd. Nancy SpainThe answer is c. Eileen Dewhurst. She wrote the Hilary Tamar series This series of fourbooks, described as "legal whodunits", were written over a period of twenty years. Their primarysetting is the top floor of 62 New Square at Lincoln's Inn where four young junior barristers havetheir chambers: Michael Cantrip, Desmond Ragwort, Selena Jardine and Timothy Shepherd. While the last named only appears sporadically, taxes barrister Julia Larwood, who works in theadjacent premises, is a regular visitor and is in effect the fifth member of the group. Thesecharacters are in some ways thinly drawn (Selena is highly organized and efficient, Julia isclumsy and chaotic, Cantrip is casual and modern, Ragwort is elegant and conservative), nevercommunicating in anything other than an ironic tone, so that even when they are in deadlydanger the atmosphere remains uniformly light-hearted.This week's question is:Author Gary Phillips has edited several anthologies over the years. One that won particular accolades wasone that paid homage to a past president. Which one?a. Nixonb. Bushc. Washingtond. ObamaTune in next week for the answer.

IntHERrupt

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 14, 2023 17:46

Do you want to leave a legacy? Of course, you do! But how can you get others to remember you when you leave a company? Your host Linda Yates is here to tell you how to leave a legacy as a leader in today's episode of the In-HER-rupt podcast. Why Should You Want to Leave a Legacy? Leaving a legacy is more than going to work and doing your job. It's the ever-lasting impact you leave on employees and others around you. You gain knowledge and skills throughout life from mentors, parents, bosses, and friends. What you learn from them can help others develop strong leadership skills.  Your legacy involves your positive impact on others and how you encouraged them to do their best.  How Do You Leave a Legacy? Develop a clear vision of your mission and vision of every aspect of your life. This includes your employee, parent, friend, and mentor roles. Lead by example on the qualities and traits you want others to see. If you want others to be motivated, be inspired to be motivated in everything you do. Strive to empower and develop others by investing in their growth and development. For example, you can create employee opportunities to enhance their skills and talents. Always have multiple lines of communication for your employees. Share your vision of a leader with your team, lay out goals, and create strategies to help them stay consistent in their work. You should also engage in active listening. Positively provide feedback on how someone can do better. Don't forget to celebrate when a team member reaches their goals! This will encourage them to keep trying to do their best. Cultivate strong relationships with your team and stakeholders. Let them know that they're doing a great job. Encourage your team to “think outside the box” when taking risks.  How Can You Make an Impact Now? Think about your choices and actions and how they will impact others for years. Be sure to focus on the long-term impact of others and not the short-term impact. Know that you can create a positive impact despite your negative circumstances. Seek out collaboration and diversity. Everyone's experience is different, and you can use this to change the workplace environment. Journal everything that you do at work. This will help you share your current experiences and future insight to help others become strong leaders. Network and give back to the community by engaging in activities that brings positive change to others. Be active in succession planning to help those who take on your role become strong and efficient leaders. “Remember, leaving a legacy as a leader is not about seeking personal recognition but rather about positive in-flow. It requires dedication, consistency, and a commitment to the well-being of the people and the organizations you lead.” -Linda Yates  Let's Connect! Lindsay Peoples and Samira Nasr: Advice to Journalists, The State of Fashion Media, and The Role of Editor-in-Chief I love facilitating panel discussions and for this season of Pod Noor, we decided to bring that collective energy here. For this week's episode, I spoke with the two of the most innovative and prominent magazine editors: Lindsay Peoples and Samira Nasr.  Lindsay Peoples is Editor-in-Chief of The Cut Magazine. Also, one of the nation's rare Black Women Editors-in-Chief. Lindsay was previously the EIC of Teen Vogue, and the youngest EIC of a Conde Nast  magazine. Lindsay also co-founded the Black in Fashion Council, which has enlisted the support of the human rights campaign to provide benchmarking around corporate policies and practices that are pertinent to the inclusivity of black employees. Samira Nasr is the editor in chief of Harpers' Bazaar Magazine, and the first Black Woman to hold the title. Samira was previously at Vanity Fair, where she served as Executive Fashion Director. In Her own words she is “The proud daughter of a Lebanese father and Trinididadian mother, and her worldview is expansive and anchored in the belief that representation matters.” I have been in awe of both of these women for years, witnessing up close the way they have broken barriers both in journalism and in fashion; and here it is, on Podcast Noor, that these two powerhouses are in a conversation like this for the FIRST TIME.  Welcome to our first podcast panel! At Your Service, Noor Some Questions Asked in This Episode: What do you feel is the responsibility of an editor in chief of a media publication today? What resources do fashion magazines have at their disposal? What are the additional resources needed? Do you find yourself still encouraging people to pursue journalism? What do we need to be talking more about with young storytellers? What are you feeling about your places in fashion and in this industry today?  How do we (do we?) prevent tokenization in fashion? ☕️ This episode is sponsored by our friends at Ahmad Tea:  www.ahmadteausa.com, @ahmadteausa: www.instagram.com/ahmadteausa

This week's episode is a guided meditation which helps you to connect to the Divine Mother, Goddess, The All. This is for healing, resting and replenishing. When we rest in her embrace, we come back to ourselves. I have been working with the Divine Mother for years, in her different forms, to find rest, peace and healing. In her embrace, I become still and in complete faith and trust. She comforts and holds us when we need, guide us through darkness and light, and help us to come back to our pure and innocent essence. She is the Mother of all mothers, she is the seed of all of creation. In Her womb we all rest, in Her arms we are nourished and we are Her beloved children. Being a Celebrity Copywriter with Gio Marcus Gio Marcus is a celebrity copywriter. We were so intrigued with this, we just had to have her on the show to find out how she helps celebrities make money. Born in New York, Gio moved to the West Coast some 20 years and she is a convert. She came for college and fell in love with the state. Her life in California is 'pretty dreamy". See Gio's Instagram photo below with roller skates! What was it like working with Celebrities? http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/Celebrity-Clients.mp4 Gio's clients hang out with Oprah and Richard Branson and are New York Times Best Selling Authors. For a girl brought up in New York, landing a NYT best selling author was quite a thrill. Gio At Lunchtime! There is so much natural beauty in California. Right outside her door she can go hiking in the mountains or get to the ocean within 30 minutes, plus the desert is not too far away, so you really have a full spectrum of nature very close by. Celebrity Copywriter Gio is a celebrity copywriter. That means she is addressing the desires of celebrities for copy that makes them money. Listen hard to how Gio explains story and non-traditional copywriting. http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/Celebrity-Copywriter.mp4 How does Gio get into the minds of her celebrity clients? She says, research is my friend. Her clients have podcasts, blogs, books. There are lots of different places Gio can go to learn what their voice is and what kinds of things they talk about. Clients who are doctors does not mean Gio needs to be an expert medical practitioner. The game is to take the technical information and translate it into a broader audience. A lot of times it can be quite difficult for an expert to translate their in-depth knowledge to a wider audience. After all, they know all the technicalities, their industry lingo, and that can make their copy too jargon rich. So, Gio's genius is to take their expertise and shape and shift it to a wider audience, who are then able to receive and hear it and get excited about it. Not Hiring Gio Would Have Been a $3m Mistake! This was from one of Gio's testimonials, Carli Davidson. See the add at the foot of these notes. http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/Testimonial-for-Gio-Marcus.mp4 If you get copy wrong, it can hurt the brand. Who Inspired Gio? David Ogilvy - one of the Godfathers of copy and brilliant in terms of understanding the psychology of marketing. She claims David Ogilvy influenced the way she interacts with people. Another inspiration is Dan Kennedy, a direct response copywriter. Graham mentioned Eugene Schwartz and Drayton Bird - the latter who was on this podcast 3 years ago in 2018. The man that released the 2 books by Eugene Schwartz, which had gone out of print, but not demand, was Brian Kurtz - another podcast guest. Will Gio Marcus Still Create Copy in Her 80s? (Like Drayton Bird) http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/In-Her-80s.mp4 Gio will always be a writer. Whether it is poetry on the beach of for clients. She feels fulfilled and naturally gets into the brands she selects to work with. How does Gio repel people? Does she have a technique. Gio recommends them to someone who may be a better fit. The one thing that stood out was when Gio said: I don't feel a sense of scarcity. I love recommending other copywriters. Gio specialises in sales pages. Not websites, nor pamphlets. The topic is also a bar for some clients. If it is not a good fit, she'll recommend the prospect to another copywriter. By letting them down gently. A large percentage of her clients are female. And she writes to a female audience. That audience is typically older than herself, such as 50s, 60s and 70s. Celebrity Copywriter Style Differences There are style differences between writing to older and younger audiences: Younger - more slang, punchier copy.

She wasborn about 895 and was raised by her grandmother, the Abbess of Eufurt convent. Matilda married Henry the Fowler, son of Duke Otto of Saxony, in the year 909. He succeeded his father as Duke in the year 912 and in 919 succeeded King Conrad I to the German throne. She was widowed in the year 936, and supported her son Henry's claim to his father's throne. When her son Otto (the Great) was elected, she persuaded him to name Henry Duke of Bavaria after he led an unsuccessful revolt.St Matilda was knownfor her considerable almsgiving. She was severely criticized by both Otto and Henry for what they considered her extravagant gifts to charities. What a juicy episode! Christin shares with us today her journey from stepping out of Christianity and the harmful effects of purity culture and into sexual liberation! She shares parts of her story that she hasn't shared elsewhere and how where she started has now gotten her to here, being a Sacred Slut. She is fiery, sexy and REALLY easy to listen to, we could have talked for hours! The simplest way to describe what Christin does is “Sex Coach”, but her work is SO MUCH MORE than that. To get a little “woo” on you, Christin's passion lies at the axis of feminine wholeness and erotic expression. In Her 1:1 and group coaching, She empowers women to unapologetically claim their sexuality through healing shame, embracing their desire, and embodying pleasure in and OUT of the bedroom. Christin is also the creator and host of Nothing Confidential [the podcast]. A platform created with the singular mission to normalise taboo topics surrounding female sexuality in order to shine a light on the societal, cultural, and/or religious shame and stigma that prevents us from healing our trauma, being at home in our bodies, and experiencing true wholeness and liberation. This episode was a dream come true, an answered prayer, and a miracle, all rolled into one!   I am thrilled to share this interview with two modern day mystics, who seem like your average couple who live next-door, until they start sharing their experiences with “Our Lady”…   Clark Strand and Perdita Finn, are the authors of one of the best books I’ve read in a long time, The Way of the Rose: The Radical Path of the Divine Feminine Hidden in the Rosary. I reviewed this book in episode 4 and it was a challenge for me not to cry throughout this interview for two reasons; first, because it was a dream come true, and second, because I can feel Divine Mother’s loving presence so strongly through them throughout the whole conversation!   In this episode, in addition to learning how a former Buddhist monk and a children’s book author found their way to Our Lady and the rosary, I hope that you find deep comfort from the numerous stories they share about miracles still happening through this ancient devotional practice.   This episode is a bit longer than usual, I confess, but it is SO worth it because we talked about miracles, miracles and more miracles the whole time!   Key learnings: 1) According to “Our Lady” miracles are the most natural outcome of all. 2) In the middle ages, miracles were part of the fabric of life. People expected them to happen and they DID happen all the time. The number one performer of miracles in the middle ages is Our Lady, not God or Jesus! 3) In Her many apparitions, Our Lady says “If you want a path to negotiate your way through difficult times, hold my hand. I will get you through this, if you hold my hand” and the best way to hold Her hand is the rosary. 4) The rosary is actually an ancient practice of honoring the Great Mother and predates Christianity by thousands of years. Anyone can practice this ancient devotion, regardless of what path you are on, and experience the miracle of your true heart’s desire.   “We pray the rosary, which has mysteries of birth, death and rebirth, to teach ourselves the long story of our souls.” Perdita Finn & Clark Strand     To find out more about Clark and Perdita’s work with Our Lady, visit https://wayoftherose.org/ Click Here to connect with them on Facebook and participate in their amazing community To read the post we mentioned that was held in reserve and shared on April 8, 2020, click here Click here to purchase the book The Way of the Rose The message from The Way of the Rose that I read is on page 189 -There is one delusion at the bottom of human experience today; the belief that you live in a Motherless, comfortless world. This is the source of all other delusions, and the cause of all unhappiness.”

Naila is a dear friend, who recently, as an adult, moved to a new country and is navigating through that experience and other life transitions including career. Naila's immigrant journey: her family escaped from Tanzania to Canada. Naila was 6 years old. In HER words: What 'not belonging' feels like Two key ingredients are needed for belonging to be felt. Three types of connection that need to be paid attention: connection to self, to other, and to the divine. What touches Naila: acts of kindness (listen to the audio to see where this discovery took her ) Nuggets of wisdom: "It’s (the path) about evolution and it’s not about fixing" "We are all on a journey and it’s going to look very different for everybody." "Things come in and they take us to whatever is next, to the next stage of the evolution." "If there is anything I want to share is that we are always ok." _______________________________________________ LINK To subscribe to newsletters to receive practices, information and videos on topics of belonging, healing and spirituality, please subscribe here: https://concordinlove.com/connection/ --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/gayane-kulikyan/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/gayane-kulikyan/support

Our topic this week is something that has been transformational for me in my business and personal life over the last four years or so.From being told by an energy healer at a health retreat that I was running on 98.5% masculine energy to trying to tune more into my masculine/feminine sides and harness that knowledge to be more in balance, this has been a BIG journey for me.And I can think of no-one better to speak with authority on this space than this week's guest, Megan Dalla-Camina.Megan is a serial entrepreneur, author, speaker, trainer and coach, as well as being a single mum to her 18-year-old son.I could honestly have talked to Megan all day, so the fact that we kept the conversation to one hour is a miracle - and that we managed to squeeze so much into that hour!Megan shares:Her experience of being “corporate till I die” to stepping out in pursuit of her own businessThe 101/dummies guide to masculine and feminine energiesHow we can identify if we're in our masculine or feminine energy at any one timeHow both energies are productive, but in very different waysHow to swap between your masculine and feminine (and back again) with easeHow becoming a parent can influence which energy we're dominant inHer thoughts on the theory that start-ups are fundamentally feminineThe three traps that make us susceptible to burn-outThe “soft” feminine versus the “fierce” feminineThree female entrepreneurs she sees successfully blending their masculine and feminine energiesLife seasons and how they can help us with the business/family blendI hope you get a few nuggets out of Megan's wisdom that will set you on your way to finding more balanced energy in your life. You can find Megan at these websites: www.megandallacamina.com and www.sacredliving.co, and on Instagram - @megandallacamina.You can also get more Megan goodness in her new book - Simple Sacred Soulful - on online book sellers and bookstores.I also wanted to remind you that I've created my first ever audio mentoring guide to help you get out of overwhelm hell. I created it ito step you through the process I guide my mentees on. It's short, snappy and super easy to do. I'm getting so much positive feedback on it!I'll be creating more of these audio guides next year and will be pricing them at $99 per guide - however this one is TOTALLY FREE!! You can get it at www.lorrainemurphy.com.au/calmthechaos .Much love and gratitude to my partner for this week's episode, LUXit - you can find them at luxit.com.au and follow them at @luxit_official.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
