“enter the sacred domain to-night without fear” [SHOS] When the #FreeSherlock movement began a decade ago, there were 50 of the original 60 Sherlock Holmes stories in the public domain in the United States. And now, when January 1, 2023 rolls around, "The Veiled Lodger" and "Shoscombe Old Place" will be the final two stories no longer under copyright. To mark this occasion and the final episode of Season 16 of I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere, we invited Leslie Klinger, BSI ("The Abbey Grange"), Betsy Rosenblatt, BSI ("Lucy Ferrier"), and Ashely Polasek, BSI ("Singlestick") back to the show to talk with us about it from the perspective of one who has sued the Conan Doyle Estate, an intellectual property lawyer, and an adaptation studies scholar, respectively. George Noory and author Leslie Klinger discuss the 19th century century novel "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde" by Robert Lewis Stevenson, the true meaning of the story about split personalities, and why it has remained relevant in popular culture like plays and movies nearly one hundred fifty years after it was first written.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
There's no question that The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is one of the most influential texts of all time. The now-iconic tale, which has confounded and thrilled readers for more than a century, was described by one scholar as the only detective-crime story in which the solution is more terrifying than the problem. And even as its plot gets continually reinterpreted and reimagined in literature, film, and theater, the main themes persist, as do the titular characters, now so familiar as to have become a part of the English language. This new edition gives the classic tale of depraved murder and unrelenting horror its most complete and illuminating presentation yet. Heavily illustrated with over a hundred and fifty full color images from the history of this cultural touchstone—including reproductions of rare books, film stills, theatrical posters, and the true-life people associated with the adventure—and extensively annotated by Edgar Award winning editor and noted Victorian literature expert Leslie S. Klinger, this thorough and authoritative approach is both an invaluable resource for scholars and a sumptuous treat for fans of the text.Introduced by a compelling and erudite essay from bestselling novelist and short story writer Joe Hill, this complete illustrated and annotated edition of The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is the ultimate tribute to an enduring classic, combining revelatory and surprising information and in-depth historical context with beautiful illustrations and photographs. It is sure to please anyone interested in the Victorian era, mystery fiction, and horror tales.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. Waiting for Cthulhu: Existential perspectives on the work of H. P. Lovecraft and Other Cosmic Horror Authors As a philosophical and literary criticism tradition, Existentialism would seem to be a perfect lens for examining the concerns of Cosmic Horror: The angst and crisis of meaning and authenticity that one confronts when experiencing the impossible vastness of an indifferent cosmos. The absurdity of existence. The impossibility of comprehension and understanding tied to a need to find meaning and identity. Our panelists explore the main concerns of Existential philosophy and analyze their presence in the work of Lovecraft and other classic cosmic horror authors. Her motto is "If it hurts, don't think about it. She is the star of a TV show called Life Below Zero which is a documentary television series which illustrates the daily and seasonal activities of subsistence hunters as they make their living in remote areas of Alaska. Produced by BBC Worldwide, the show airs on National Geographic. The show follows people who live in the remote areas of Alaska, trying to survive in the below-zero conditions, demonstrating their everyday struggles as they hunt and depend only on themselves and survive using the resources they have. With all of the isolation, you’d think the scariest things Sue has to worry about are weather conditions, ample food and water and wild animals…but what about ghosts and the paranormal?? Todays guest is Dustin Pari. Being on television as a paranormal investigator happened quite by accident, but there is something to be said for accidents being best described as when hard work meets opportunity. Several seasons and years of his life later, Dustin had traveled the world like a “Paranormal Rockstar”, a moniker given to him during an interview, which was then used from that point forward since it symbolized much of who he was. Regardless of whatever you may call him, or he may call himself, Dustin may be best known as a paranormal researcher and lecturer due to his numerous appearances on such television programs as Ghost Hunters, Ghost Hunters International, and Destination Truth. He has journeyed up and down the road time and time again appearing here, there, and everywhere. Though a well-respected and highly regarded staple of the paranormal event and lecture circuit, Dustin also delivers his entertaining and educational paranormal presentations to colleges and libraries across America. http://www.dustinpari.com Ghost Magnet Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/Ghost-Magnet-with-Bridget-Marquardt-2480154975336666/ Bridget Marquardt Bridget Marquardt is best known to television audiences and pop-culture connoisseurs as the sweet and brainy star of E! Hey Everyone! It’s Bridget Marquardt here with a brand new episode of Ghost Magnet! Today’s guest Barri Ghai is a professional paranormal investigator and TV presenter with over 15 years experience. He first became interested in the existence of ghosts from a very early age after personally experiencing supernatural activity. He’s now the star of a hit ghost hunting show in the UK, is married to a witch and and they have 7 girls! Much to unpack on this week’s episode of Ghost Magnet. Barri founded the Ghostfinder Paranormal Society in early 2006 with the intention of helping more people understand and find answers to the paranormal, by attempting to gather tangible evidence. Although many of his childhood experiences were horrific and can only be described as demonic attacks, he still developed a keen interest for ghosts and the paranormal. As a teenager, Barri began his own research looking into famous hauntings and documented cases. He eventually started carrying out his own investigations of local cemeteries and famous landmarks to try and document his experiences and gather evidence. During the course of his childhood, Barri reports to have seen at least four separate entities, and encountered something evil that has continued to make its occasional presence known to him and his family almost thirty years on. During his final year at University, Barri saw a young female apparition in his bedroom, which he believes helped focus his interest further and ultimately led to plans to create The Ghostfinder Paranormal Society (GPS). Since establishing GPS, he has experienced many things which he believes defy logic and scientific reasoning. His personal belief in ghosts, and other supernatural phenomena has fuelled his commitment to one day proving, through the use of science and technology, that ghosts do really exist. Barri regularly features on television, radio, and in magazines worldwide. He has appeared in many successful TV shows some of which include; Celebrity Haunted Hotel Mansion Live, Celebrity Haunted Hotel Live, My Ghost Story, Ghost Adventures, Paranormal Investigation: Live and 'Help My house is Haunted’. Barri is considered one of the UK's leading paranormal investigators and works with some of the best in the field. @barri_ghai www.barrighai.com Ghost Magnet Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/Ghost-Magnet-with-Bridget-Marquardt-2480154975336666/ Bridget Marquardt Bridget Marquardt is best known to television audiences and pop-culture connoisseurs as the sweet and brainy star of E! Todays guest is Andrea Perron she is the eldest daughter of Roger & Carolyn Perron. Her parents and her four sisters: Nancy, Christine, Cynthia and April are the real family from the Conjuring movie. In June of 1970 her mom found the farm, then known as the old Arnold Estate; two-hundred acres of land with a big barn and a farmhouse; plenty of space to spread out and explore Nature. It was the perfect place to raise a family, according to the owner, though he failed to disclose a crucial element of the experience he endured as an occupant. For almost a decade the family lived among the dead. There they came to understand that we are not alone and there is something beyond mortal existence. In 2007 Andrea began writing a manuscript which has now evolved into the trilogy “House of Darkness House of Light” a book about what her and her family went through. She says writing the book has proved to be quite an excursion in its own right, spawning some nightmares while exhuming the memories of the dead. Often painful, it has been a healing process as well. There was no escaping unscathed, though they thought they had successfully done so at the time. She says, Many have spoken or written about fragments of the story for decades. Now is the time to tell the whole truth about what happened in the house. It is a tale worth telling because it is true. Time has come because we are ready to disclose our secrets and the world is ready to receive them. And, I can’t wait to hear the story directly from her! Thank you so much for listening and welcome back!! This weeks guest is Linda the Ghost Hunter. When she was very young, she realized that she had the gift to be able to sense and communicate with spirits. At first, this was unnerving, but in time, she realized that most spirits are not here to do harm. Often times, they simply wanted to observe and communicate with the world that they no longer are a part of. In the years since, she has expanded her knowledge of, and experience with, the paranormal. She has been brought into people's homes and businesses to help figure out experiences they've had that they don't understand or can't explain. She have been featured on several television shows and worked as a paranormal expert for TV and films. She started this ghost hunting tour to bring the ghost hunting experience to more people. People who may or may not have experience with the paranormal; people who are interested in learning more about ghost hunting from an experienced ghost hunter; or people who simply want to have a fun time exploring Hollywood in a way they may not have thought possible. She says, one thing is very clear; Hollywood Boulevard is very haunted! This weeks guest is Sue Romano. Sue is a Wedding consultant, in hospitality/entertainment industry for 30 years, and making magic at Disney for 25yrs, although they have had two seasons of Disney’s Fairy Tale Wedding show she is very modest saying she is only in the background for the Disneyland/Anaheim shows. She may only be in the background but she is very much catalyst for making those Princess wedding dreams come true…I know because I have seen it first hand! And, I’ll explain how later in our episode! But, as you may have figured, her amazing Disney career is not what has her on the show today. Although if I had a second podcast I probably would want to talk all about amazing theme wedding and parties and talk to people like Sue about how to make these elaborate fantasies a reality…but that is another show. Sue’s interest in the paranormal began in childhood after watching a certain movie, she new she had something special. She became interested in the world of the Wicca, magic, rituals, witchcraft and spells. She has dabbled in numerology, Tarot Cards and Karma Cards. Her special gift is Precognition. And, she some paranormal stories of her own to tell! Her daughter also has the same passion and abilities! Could this be genetic? Looking for a distraction during trying times? Please enjoy the interview we did Ghost Hunter’s own Richel Stratton. I can’t tell you how excited we are to see the new episodes on A&E starting April 8th. Over the past few weeks Bridget has gotten unique access to “Ghost Hunters” ahead of their season premier. We’ve had Brandon Alvis, Brian Murray and now Richel Stratton tells her story. Paranormal investigator Richel Stratton has been ghost hunting for a decade, with most of her investigations conducted independently. Photographer Shannon Taggart became aware of spiritualism as a teenager when her cousin received a message from a medium that revealed details about her grandfather's death. In 2001, while working as a photojournalist, she began photographing where that message was received―Lily Dale, New York, home to the world's largest spiritualist community. Taggart expected to spend one summer figuring out the tricks of the spiritualist trade. Instead, spiritualism’s mysterious processes, earnest practitioners and neglected photographic history became an inspiration. Her project evolved into an 18-year journey that has taken her around the world in search of “ectoplasm”― the elusive substance that is said to be both spiritual and material. Shannon is drawn to what she calls “psychological spaces.” She describes these as “invisible realities, like an interior experience you can’t really see,” and relishes the challenge of making visuals to describe them. Taggart says she values photography’s ability to open up new worlds, and she hopes readers of her new book will be transported while they explore the strange realm within it. Her book is titled, Séance, and Taggart offers a series of haunting photographs exploring spiritualist practices in the US, England and Europe. Supported with a commentary on her experiences, a foreword by Dan Aykroyd, creator of Ghostbusters and fourth-generation spiritualist, and illustrated essays from Andreas Fischer and Tony Oursler, Séance examines spiritualism’s relationship with human celebrity and its connections with technology, and concludes with the debate over ectoplasm and how spiritualism can move forward in the 21st century. Before George Romero died, he had been working on a brand new zombie novel titled THE LIVING DEAD ( https://amzn.to/2RR7PKM ). He didn't get to finish it, but happily, author Daniel Kraus has done so, with the approval of the Romero Estate, and Daniel is our guest this episode. Daniel has also co-authored books with Guillermo del Toro: TROLLHUNTERS and THE SHAPE OF WATER. One of the questions I asked Daniel Kraus was: "If someone were to come up to you and say, 'Daniel, this looks great, but I'm just sick of zombies, even though it's George Romero', what would you say?" Daniel's beautiful response was: "I know that question because I would have said the same thing... I would say we don't need another zombie book, EXCEPT this one. And the reason is, is that this one is the END. It is the capstone on the guy who started it all. This is his final word on the topic... this concludes the story." What if the object of your curiosity in that creepy, old antique store comes with its own haunted past? A victorian oil lamp? Letters from a haunted asylum? A shelf that mysteriously crashes? Meet Christian Marcus whose collection of quirky curios can be found at his shop Diehl Marcus & Co. or on the walls and halls of some of Los Angele's hippest bars and nightclubs. Christian Marcus has worked in the field of interior and set design for over 25 years, in theater, film, theme park, and commercial design. He co owns Diehl Marcus and Co. with his wife Erika. Part shop, part event space, this antique specialty shop was created by the couple in the Edwardian style. The building dates back to 1924 and has been variously a photo studio, silent film producers office, and tailoring shop. Several guests have remarked on sensing the presence of a young woman in the back section. Christian, who hails from Salem, MA has had several odd experiences while working at the shop, from swinging chandeliers, to bells that ring of their own accord. A seance held in the space resulted in items crashing off a shelf. Dr. Barry E. Taff holds a doctorate in psychophysiology with a minor in biomedical engineering, and is a world-renowned parapsychologist who worked out of UCLA’s former Parapsychology Laboratory from 1969 through 1978 as a research associate. During his four-decade career, Dr. Taff has investigated more than 4,500 cases of ghosts, hauntings, poltergeists and conducted extensive studies in telepathy and precognition, eventually developing the initial protocols and methodologies for what was later termed “remote viewing”. He also, was himself, investigated as a psychic subject, the results of which were published in Behavioral Neuropsychiatry, “A Laboratory Investigation of Telepathy: The Study of A Psychic”, Vol. 6, Nos. 1-12, April-December 1974-January-March, 1975. One of the cases Dr. Taff investigated in 1974 gained international fame as the book and motion picture, The Entity, starring Barbara Hershey and Ron Silver, released by Fox in 1983. Dr. Taff served as technical advisor on The Entity as well as being represented in the film by the character “Gene Kraft”. What’s unknown by the media is the fact that, in real life, The Entity followed its female victim for quite some time after our initial investigation, continuing its vociferous nature. Allegedly, Doris Bither died in 1999 of cardiopulmonary failure at the age of 58. He has consulted for government, business, and law enforcement, including the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI), National Security Agency (NSA), Defense Language Institute (DLI), Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the FBI, Interpol, LAPD, California Highway Patrol, Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Department, and the Westminster Police Department. He has served as a technical advisor or script doctor on the films Logan’s Run, Demon Seed, Altered States, Poltergeist, and The Entity. Dr. Taff has written numerous articles for magazines and journals, and has been featured in many books on paranormal subjects ranging from precognition to UFOs. From Rudolph Valentino and Judy Garland to The Ramones, Chris Cornell and even Nicholas Cage? Everyone’s dying to get into Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Join #GhostMagnet Bridget Marquardt and her guest Cemetery Guide Mark Masek and get the story behind the stones on this week’s episode of Ghost Magnet. Mark Masek combined his love of history, old Hollywood and storytelling by researching and writing about the cemeteries of Los Angeles, and the people and stories buried there. After a career as a newspaper reporter and editor in Illinois, Mark moved to Los Angeles and started visiting cemeteries to pay his respects to the departed entertainers he enjoyed on TV and movies – but it wasn’t always easy to find them. So Mark wrote “Hollywood Remains to be Seen: A Guide to the Movie Stars’ Final Homes,” covering 14 cemeteries in the Los Angeles area, and featuring easy-to-follow walking tours of the properties and directions for finding more than 300 TV and movie stars. Mark has also written ebooks on the most popular cemeteries, with up-to-date information on the latest residents. In addition to celebrities, Mark also documents the lives of lesser-known people in the “Stories Behind the Stones” section of his website, http://www.CemeteryGuide.com Stay connected @bridgetmarquardt, @ghost_magnet_podcast Ghost Magnet Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/Ghost-Magnet-with-Bridget-Marquardt-2480154975336666/ Bridget Marquardt Bridget Marquardt is best known to television audiences and pop-culture connoisseurs as the sweet and brainy star of E! After over a decade of supernatural experiences that still baffle him to this day, Sean continues to search passionately for evidence of the unexplained. Sean was a featured investigator on the pilot series "The Demon Files", which aired on the Destination America Network. As part of a team headed by the well known Denomologist and retired NYPD Seargent Ralph Sarchie, who became the inspiration for the movie "Deliver us from evil", Sean was mentored in the field of Demonology. Ralph taught Sean how to approach cases of the demonic in the extreme recesses of the paranormal. It was while jumping head first into this new realm of the supernatural, Sean had also developed his natural psychic and mediumship abilities and applied them to his new journey into the paranormal. "It is great to be your own piece of equipment while investigating with the other types of technologically advanced devices we have today to provide evidence". In his first published work "Shadow Chaser", Sean follows the pursuit into the unexplained that he started from the beginning. Along with Sean's years of experience as a musician, he has trained his ears to aid in his investigations. "Experiencing a new tier of mystery on every investigation is a privilege that is beyond humbling. Implementing these experiences and ultimately helping people with their spiritual needs is humbling and allows me to share these experiences with the world". Now, in the Travel Channel's TV series "Ghost Loop", Sean is the lead investigator of a team with a mission to assist people dealing with a diversity of hauntings, including helping trapped souls who may be reaching out from the other side. @seandaustin https://seandaustin.com
Welcome to the final Ghost Magnet of 2019 and — oh my — this is a good one! Join Bridget and her new BFFs Tammie and Brice as they talk about the spooky things they have in common! From New Orleans and the Myrtles Plantation, to California and David Oman’s House, The Glen Tavern Inn, The Chaplin Studios and more. THEN be on the lookout for the CRAZY video we shot in our post-podcast investigation! Tammie Merheb-Chavez is a New Orleans native who moved to Los Angeles in 2009. She’s a full-time costume designer for film, tv and theater and part-time paranormal investigator with a coffee addiction living happily with her hubby here in El Lay. Her introduction to the paranormal started at a very young age while living around the legends and lores that surrounded her home city, New Orleans. It soon evolved more while working in a few haunted theaters and movie sets. When she is not working you might find her investigating haunted places, obsessing over pet-finder, binge-watching paranormal shows and scaring Brice with creepy stories. Brice Mitchell Williams was raised in various states around the Midwest and moved to Los Angeles in 2011. He was raised in a conservative, Christian community and as such, never really believed in any kind of paranormal activity. However, as he grew up, several inexplicable life experiences have left him more open to the world as we know it. Whether the paranormal can be attributed to Demons, Ghosts, Spirits, Energy, or some other phenomena, he remains optimistically skeptical and loves being proven wrong and discovering new perspectives in this crazy genre! When he isn’t podcasting, he is most likely Instragram-ing photos of his dog, drinking illegal amounts of coffee, or doing CrossFit, poorly. For fans of The X-Files do we have a treat for you! Meet Dean Haglund, actor, comedian, inventor AND a downtown Los Angeles theater district aficionado! Prior to the show Dean took us on one of his signature tours from VERY SCARY ghost of the Hotel Cecil, The Bradbury, the Hotel Alexandria and many of DTLA’s varied theaters. In this episode Dean takes us on a deep dive of the creepy Los Angeles. Dean fell in love with the renaissance happening in DTLA. He has given tours for the Historic Theater Association and the LA Conservancy. He has lead tours highlighting Hollywood history, silent film locations and vaudeville legend & lore! He spent the last few fears between LA and Australia, but now he’s shutting between Michigan and his LA lair. In this episode we are recording from the historic Eastern Columbia Building, also known as the Eastern Columbia Lofts, it is a thirteen story Art Deco building. The Eastern Columbia Building is built of steel-reinforced concrete and clad in glossy turquoise terra cotta trimmed with deep blue and gold trim. The façade is decorated with a wealth of motifs—sunburst patterns, geometric shapes, zigzags, chevrons and stylized animal and plant forms. The building is capped with a four-sided clock tower emblazoned with the name "Eastern" in neon. When driving in or near downtown LA the building can’t be missed! It opened on September 12, 1930 after just nine months of construction. It was built at a cost of $1.25 million as the new headquarters and 39th store for the Eastern-Columbia Department Store. The building is widely considered the greatest surviving example of Art Deco architecture in the city. In 1985, it was listed as a historical cultural monument. In 2006, the building was renovated into 147 condos and it is said the Johnny Depp owns 5 penthouses! But…is it haunted??? Bridget’s back from the Bermuda Triangle and ready for more! Join Bridget and Ghost Hunter’s tech master of Brandon Alvis as they explore explore The Glen Tavern Inn…The Stanley Hotel’s mini me. Brandon has always had interests and questions about the paranormal. Over the years he has spoken at historical locations across the United States. Appearing in the New York Post, MTV News, Travel Channel, Discovery and Science Channel. After purchasing a modest camcorder in 2010, Brandon began to produce web content about historical events. Discovering his newly found passion, he wanted to expand his knowledge of the film industry. You have seen him on Ghost Hunters, Ghost Adventures, The Unexplained Files and Haunted Discoveries. Starting with a few friends using standard tools and procedures, he realized the many mistakes "commonly found" when investigating the paranormal. This motivated him to propagate a team specializing in many fields and to develop new methods not only reliable but convincing, introducing the "scientific approach" and naming this team: "American Paranormal Research Association" aka A.P.R.A. This new approach along with his leadership and entrepreneurial skills has propelled A.P.R.A., becoming a highly recognized name. His hard work, dedication and passion to this science are greatly respected, often allowing A.P.R.A. to investigate in areas normally closed-off to others. Pioneering fundraisers and special events, he along with his team, provide participants an insight into the paranormal wherein proceeds go to the preservation of the historical structure. His determination to find "cold hard facts, to prove or disprove" makes A.P.R.A. what it is today. Today we have a super fun episode, we are recording LIVE from the super cute and charming Glen Tavern Inn in Santa Paula, Ca. But don’t let looks deceive you, this historic little inn has a history of paranormal activity and ghost stories! About The Glen Tavern Inn It is a tutor/craftsman style hotel built in 1911. During Prohibition, the Inn retained something of its Wild West origins as the third floor - at that time, an open space not yet built out into separate guestrooms - was utilized as a speakeasy, brothel and gambling parlor.[2] Many legends stem from this era, including tales of murdered prostitutes and shootouts between unruly gamblers. These stories, though mostly unconfirmed, persist with a life of their own as part of the hotel's rich lore. In the 1930’s, the Glen Tavern Inn hosted such notables as Carole Lombard, John Wayne, Houdini and canine thespian, Rin Tin Tin, who boasted his own suite long before “pet-friendly” entered the hospitality lexicon. It became dilapidated and rundown before it was rescued and renovated back to it’s original grandeur. The Inns’ motto, is “Where the past comes to life”..and that seems to be a good motto, because the hotel has it’s share of stories! So much so that the Ventura Paranormal Society had its annual convention there and it has been featured on Ghost Adventures and Dead Files. This week we are LIVE from Madame Tussauds Wax Museum in Hollywood (#tussaudsla)! There have been many reports of this busy tourist attraction being haunted! So, of course, the first thing I wanted to do was to come here after the attraction was closed, hear all of the spooky ghost stories from the manager and the staff, some history on the location from Lisa Morton and then do a little late night investigation of our own! And, Guess what?!?! You get join us! Do these wax figures come to life at night or are they so lifelike that it just feels like it? What’s the history of the building did something horrific go down here in the past? What about the history of the museum itself…how did this come to be? What about Madame Tussaud, who was she and what inspired her to create these lifelike replicas? Or is it the area? Hollywood has a very seedy and mysterious past…we are going to be discussing all of these questions and more! Madam Tussauds is a 3 story museum with 125 celebrity figures in display. Our guest today is Helen Larimore, the marketing manager of the museum. She is originally from Chicago and since she was a child she has been obsessed with all things bizarre and strange. She has been at Madame Tussauds for 2 years now and she says working within the walls of the Wax Museum is a perfect fir for her. Her proudest accomplishment was creating a horror themed room for the attraction that covers many classics from yesterday and today. Like Bela Lugosi as Dracula and IT SET. She says she has always had a bit of a 6th sense her entire life and working at the museum has sparked her 6th sense on several occasions. Both her Mother and Grandmother would tell her stories of their encounters with the paranormal when she was very young, and she began having her own experiences at the age of twelve. She considers herself to be highly sensitive, and from a young age she began exhibiting heightened sight and hearing. Her mother used to wonder how her daughter could possibly have seen an approaching plane so far in advance of it coming into others’ sight. Katie’s investigative approach has been shaped largely by her heightened sensitivity, combined with her upbringing in a scientific household and lifelong exposure to the paranormal. This unique combination of abilities and understanding give her an extremely healthy balance of openness and skepticism. She has appeared as an investigator on Discovery Channel's Ghost Lab, as well as A&E's upcoming World's Biggest Ghost Hunt. She now has ten years of experience as a paranormal investigator, and also works as an Interior & Graphic Designer. Website: katieburr.com Instagram: @katieburrofficial

When in the city of Angeles you can’t help but look for ghosts at some of LA’s legendary hotels, especially the notorious Alexandria Hotel, Mission Inn and Hotel Cecil. Meet the man behind Bizarre Los Angeles, Craig Owens. Craig’s an LA-based writer and photographer who began staging vintage style photo shoots at haunted hotels as an idea for an Old Hollywood themed project. Little did he know that while on location, he he would catch his first ghost on film. This left him wondering if his photo shoots were somehow triggering paranormal activity. Craig’s book, "Haunted by History, Vol. 1," earned a Publishers Weekly Star Review. His encyclopedic knowledge of each hotel's history, paired with his haunting photography and sense of humor has made him a favorite of historical societies and ghost enthusiasts alike. His next volume, featuring the true histories of eight more haunted Southern California hotels, will be released in 2019. He’s appeared on "My Ghost Story: Caught on Film" about an apparition at the Palomar Inn in Old Town Temecula. Since that time, he's been quoted in James Bartlett's book, "Gourmet Ghosts 2," and Colin Dickey's book: "Ghostland: An American History in Haunted Places." More recently, he has appeared on Nerdist's popular "Bizarre States" online podcast, and has been featured in "Los Angeles Magazine," and "NBC Los Angeles." https://bizarrela.com https://www.facebook.com/bizarrelosangeles Ghost Magnet Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/Ghost-Magnet-with-Bridget-Marquardt-2480154975336666/ Bridget Marquardt Bridget Marquardt is best known to television audiences and pop-culture connoisseurs as the sweet and brainy star of E! At that time, he was as a seven-year-old boy playing on the grounds of a Southern plantation known as Waverley, located outside of West Point, Mississippi. While Waverley’s owners admitted to seeing and hearing the ghost of a young female child, Craig never encountered her. Yet the atmosphere and history of Waverley stayed with him long after his family moved to Texas. In 1994, he moved to Los Angeles and began to work freelance in the film and television industry. His production credits include Fudge (1995), The Christmas Box (1995), Wag the Dog(1997), Phone Booth (2002), and The Gilmore Girls (2000-2001). In 2002, Craig left film production to work for the Century City Chamber of Commerce and later the International Cinematographers Guild, I.A.T.S.E. Local 600. While working for the chamber of commerce, he contributed articles for the Century City View and wrote the History of Century City. In 2009, Craig began staging vintage style photo shoots at haunted hotels as an idea for an Old Hollywood themed project. While on location, he experienced paranormal activity. This left him wondering if his photo shoots were somehow triggering it. The following year, he started his Facebook blog, Bizarre Los Angeles, a page dedicated to Los Angeles’ forgotten history. He also continued to hold vintage photos shoots at haunted locations. Little did he know that his love for haunted hotels would bring media attention. In 2013, he appeared on My Ghost Story: Caught on Film after he unintentionally photographed an apparition at the Palomar Inn in Old Town Temecula, California. The following year, the online magazine, The Verge, published an article on his paranormal experiences at the Aztec Hotel in Monrovia, California. Craig Owens has now gained notoriety for his photography and his passion for historical research. He has also appeared in other people’s books, including Gourmet Ghosts 2 by James T. Bartlett and Ghostland: An American History in Haunted Places by Colin Dickey. He has also been featured in articles published on Los Angeles Magazine and NBC Los Angeles. While he firmly believes that ghosts exist, he is reluctant to accept all paranormal stories. He instead approaches the subject with a good deal of skepticism, preferring to err on the side of not believing enough. He also encourages his readers to form their own opinions as to whether ghosts are real, and warns people not to believe in ghost legends unless the legends are supported by historical fact. https://bizarrela.com https://www.facebook.com/bizarrelosangeles About Haunted By History, Volume 1 Haunted by History, Volume I, by Craig Owens uncovers little known facts about eight prominent historic hotels in Southern California and the origins behind many of their ghost stories. Not only does his well-documented research separate facts from fiction, but Owens also keeps the subject matter interesting by interweaving historic photos with his own elaborately staged Old Hollywood-style photos shot in the most haunted rooms, hallways, and lobbies. This unique book blends solid research, fascinating insights, and haunting photography that will appeal to believers and non-believers alike. Hotels and inns featured in Vol. 1 are the Hotel del Coronado, Victorian Rose Bed & Breakfast, Julian Gold Rush Hotel, Mission Inn Hotel & Spa, Alexandria Hotel, Wyndham Garden Pierpont Inn, Banning House Lodge, and Glen Tavern Inn. https://www.amazon.com/Haunted-History-Separating-Historic-California/dp/0997688106

This week we have another special episode because I am recording live from the infamous Queen Mary in Long Beach, California! The Queen Mary’s creation and launch was nothing if not extraordinary and her story is rich with history, elegance and grandeur. From the time her construction began in 1930 in Clydebank, Scotland, the Queen Mary was destined to stand in a class all her own. Despite suffering economic setbacks during the Great Depression, which stalled construction on the ship for several years, Cunard Line spared no expense on building the Queen Mary. In this episode we’ll talk to Queen Mary Commodore Everett about its haunted history and his personal experiences with the QE2’s ghostly guests. And I’ll also speak with Steve Sheldon, Executive Producer of the Queen Mary Dark Harbor experience. I have said this on my show before but there are so many hotels or other locations that try to deny or hide it and one of the things that I LOVE about the Queen Mary is how they embrace it. I love to hear about the things others have experienced, the nightly ghost tours and I love that you use those stories as the basis for some of the mazes in Dark Harbor! And recently re-opening the most haunted room on the ship to allow brave souls like me to spend the night!! We are going to talk more about that later but I am a definite fan. https://www.queenmary.com Ghost Magnet Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/Ghost-Magnet-with-Bridget-Marquardt-2480154975336666/ Bridget Marquardt Bridget Marquardt is best known to television audiences and pop-culture connoisseurs as the sweet and brainy star of E! The Queen Mary’s creation and launch was nothing if not extraordinary and her story is rich with history, elegance and grandeur. From the time her construction began in 1930 in Clydebank, Scotland, the Queen Mary was destined to stand in a class all her own. Despite suffering economic setbacks during the Great Depression, which stalled construction on the ship for several years, Cunard Line spared no expense on building the Queen Mary! On May 27, 1936, the Queen Mary departed from Southampton, England embarking on her maiden voyage. She boasted five dining areas and lounges, two cocktail bars and swimming pools, a grand ballroom, a squash court and even a small hospital. The Queen Mary had set a new benchmark in transatlantic travel, which the rich and famous considered as the only civilized way to travel. She quickly seized the hearts and imaginations of the public on both sides of the Atlantic, representing the spirit of an era known for its elegance, class and style. Since her retirement from the sea as an active liner in 1967, the Queen Mary has never been more popular as an iconic Southern California attraction, hotel, and venue for special events. The ship carried some 2.2 million passengers in peacetime and 810,000 military personnel in the Second World War, but here in Long Beach, an estimated 50 million people have visited. The day the ship was launched in 1934, a well-known English psychic, Lady Mable Fortiscue-Harrison would predict, “The Queen Mary will know her greatest fame and popularity when she never sails another mile or carries another fare-paying passenger.” A compelling insight! For three years after her maiden voyage, the Queen Mary was the grandest ocean liner in the world carrying Hollywood celebrities like Bob Hope and Clark Gable, royalty like the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, and dignitaries like Winston Churchill. During this time she even set a new speed record, which she held for 14 years. But when the Queen Mary docked in New York in September 1939 that would be the last time she would carry civilian passengers for many years. As World War II started, the Queen Mary's transformation into a troopship had begun. She was painted a camouflaged grey color and stripped of her luxurious amenities. Dubbed the "Grey Ghost" because of her stealth and stark color, the Queen Mary was the largest and fastest troopship to sail, capable of transporting as many as 16,000 troops at 30 knots. After the end of WWII, the Queen Mary began a 10-month retrofitting process, which would return the ship to her original glory. On July 21, 1947, the Queen Mary resumed regular passenger service across the Atlantic Ocean, and continued to do so for nearly two more decades. The increasing popularity of air travel helped signal the end of an era for the Queen Mary. By 1965 the entire Cunard fleet was operating at a loss and they decided to retire and sell the legendary Queen Mary. On October 31, 1967, the Queen Mary departed on her final cruise, arriving in Long Beach, California, on December 9, 1967. She has called Southern California her home ever since. The Queen Mary is now a floating Hotel, Attraction and Event & Wedding Venue, home to three world-class restaurants and an icon in Southern California.

Haunted Orange started out in 2009 as the brain child of Ernie Alonzo, a lifetime Old Town Orange resident who began a website just as a hobby and called it HauntedOrange.com. On the site he would post historic photographs of Orange, as well as ghost stories he collected from personal interviews of shopkeepers and business owners in Old Town Orange. Later that year he met Charles Spratley, a San Diego native, local historian and author who relocated to Orange County and had formerly ran a successful ghost tour company in San Diego. Soon the two were brainstorming on how they would turn Ernie's collection of historical data and ghostly tales into a ghost tour for Old Town Orange with a heavy emphasis on local history. In September of 2010, with much local anticipation, the first Old Town Orange Haunted History Ghost walk was launched. The summer of 2014 launched the Downtown Santa Ana Ghost Walk with an opening gala at the Howe-Waffle historic Mansion attended by city officials, local media and invited guests. The same year a name change to Haunted Orange County was made in anticipation of more Orange County city locations being added to the company's offerings. In the fall of 2017 they launched their Black Star Canyon Ghost Walk and later became the first and currently only ghost tour company to run a county licensed and permitted tour in Black Star Canyon. On February of 9, 2019 our all new San Juan Capistrano tour will debut. In addition, since 2010 they have produced a diverse offering of paranormal, haunted and horror themed special events including, haunted themed dinners, annual paranormal lecture series, sugar skull workshops, mask sculpting courses, UFO sky watches, Desert Ghost Town sleepovers, horror movie screenings, panels at halloween and paranormal conventions, guest speaking at colleges and universities, paranormal celebrity meet & greets, cemetery tours, theatrical seance recreations, psychic presentations, Bigfoot and cryptozoology lectures and much, much more! Beginning 2012 they conducted public paranormal investigation events all over Southern California as well as a handful out of state with some of the most recognized paranormal TV personalities and researchers in the world. Haunted Orange County is currently operated by Fandom Productions, a fan based entertainment and management company which also operates Bob Gurr's Waltland Disney History Tours in Los Angeles. Recorded Live from the World famous Winchester Mystery House in San Jose, California, Bridget special guest is the GM of the worlds most unusual mansion, Walter Magnuson. The Winchester Mystery House® is an architectural wonder and historic landmark in San Jose, CA that was once the personal residence of Sarah Lockwood Pardee Winchester, the widow of William Wirt Winchester and heiress to a large portion of the Winchester® Repeating Arms fortune. Tragedy befell Sarah – her infant daughter died of a childhood illness and a few years later her husband was taken from her by tuberculosis. Shortly after her husband’s death, Sarah left their home in New Haven, CT and moved out west to San Jose, CA. There, she bought an eight-room farmhouse and began what could only be described as the world’s longest home renovation, stopping only when Sarah passed on September 5, 1922. But what remained is indeed a mystery. Even before her passing, rumors of a “mystery house” being built by an eccentric and wealthy woman swirled. Was she instructed to build this home by a psychic? Was she haunted by the ghosts of those felled by the “Gun that Won the West”? Did construction truly never stop? What motivated a well-educated socialite to cut herself off from the rest of the world and focus almost solely on building the world’s most beautiful, yet bizarre mansion? Find out on this episode of Ghost Magnet. Sherlock Holmes is perhaps the most popular fictional detective. In addition to the many novels and short stories penned by his creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Holmes is the most portrayed literary character in stage, film, and TV history, having appeared on stage and screen more than 250 times, according to Wikipedia. Actors who have played Holmes include Basil Rathbone, Jeremy Brett, Charlton Heston, Christopher Plummer, Roger Moore, Peter O’Toole, and more recently Benedict Cumberbatch in the British TV series Sherlock, and Jonny Lee Miller in Elementary on CBS. All these productions are made possible because there continues to be an audience for stories featuring Holmes. Laurie King and Leslie Klinger, best selling authors, have brought together a group of talented mystery writers in a new anthology: For the Sake of the Game: Stories Inspired by the Sherlock Holmes Canon. The instructions given to the authors was straightforward: be inspired by the stories of Arthur Conan Doyle and go where your imagination takes you. This is the fourth anthology Laurie and Leslie have produced and we are excited to talk with Laurie about this new collection of stories featuring Holmes, Dr. Watson, and other Baker Street characters in original and [...]

"there can be no question as to the authorship" [SIGN] "The Adventure of the Mazarin Stone" took place in July 1903 and it shares a distinction with one other Sherlock Holmes story: like "The Adventure of the Lion's Mane," this is the only other story that is told by a third person. We review some theories, summed up by Leslie Klinger, BSI ("The Abbey Grange") in his Daypark Press publication of a Baker Street Irregulars dinner memento in 2001. From Christopher Morley to O.F. Grazebrook, Gavin Brend, Martin Dakin and more, there are clever and preposterous suggestions as to whose pen was behind this story. Not to mention the question of the layout of 221B Baker Street, the mysterious bay window, the condition of the wax bust, and more. See which theory you side with in this episode of Trifles... "it is the only personal introduction" [SUSS] "Just what the world needs," you tell yourself. "Another biography of Arthur Conan Doyle." Full disclosure: we thought the same thing. Until we read Arthur and Sherlock by Michael Sims. And then our attitudes changed. And then even more so after having a conversation with the author. Fortunately, we recorded that conversation and we're sharing it with you here. Michael shared with us the impact of books on his young mind, his journey to writing, and how his earlier works on E.B. White and Henry David Thoreau inspired his style for this book. From Baring-Gould to Joseph Bell, we touch on many familiar names and go deep into this exploration of the elements that inspired Conan Doyle to create his master detective. And, if you listen carefully, you'll discover how a certain intestinal discomfort prevented Doyle from killing himself. And please consider joining our . Welcome once again to Baker Street Babes Live and Local, this time coming to you from Bouchercon 2014 in Long Beach, California! You're heard the story: and wanted to create another Sherlockian short story collection featuring some of the most popular fiction writers anywhere: and the Arthur Conan Doyle Estate demanded their pound of flesh. The #FreeSherlock movement was born, Sherlock Holmes was freed at last, and now, after countless trials (literally) you can finally purchase a wonderful group of stories riffing off the life of the Great Detective and—occasionally—even Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. In this episode, Baker Street Babe Lyndsay chats with Les and Laurie about their initial hankering for a pastiche collection, their copyright travails, their editorial process, the stories in the collection, their working relationship, and just how much crap is written about Sherlock Holmes all over the world. Listen here, and please do enoy!
It's a show chock full of Sherlock Holmes news! Of course, Horace Harker was a reporter for the Central Press Syndicate in "The Six Napoleons," but in our case we're acting in his stead to share some of the most significant news to our own syndicate. We share a special announcement about a future feature of the program which we'll call "The Central Press Syndicate." But in the meantime, we have much to share... We pick up with a clarification on Lenore Glen Offord ("The Old Russian Woman") and tell you all about the 2011 Baker Street Journal Christmas Annual, in which readers will be able to discover the many aspects of this intelligent and well-published writer. We also question what Investitures looked like under Edgar Smith's and Julian Wolff's time - particularly the presentation of the shilling as a medal. There's an opportunity for your feedback. Speaking of feedback, we're happy to share a good deal of listener mail and commentary from Episode 54. Thank you for all of your input and intelligent observations. We also note that we've added a function to the site called Speakpipe, which allows our listeners to provide an audio comment directly from the web page while listening to the show. We hope you'll use it. Over on our Facebook page, every week our fans have a chance to join in the fun with our Wacky Caption Wednesdays. A lineup of some of the recent ones include the iconic image of and the ; and in "The Speckled Band" with . On the news front, we have items from the next season of "Sherlock" from BBC One, and news from Steven Moffat that there's a clue that everyone missed with regard to Sherlock Holmes's death. And the announcement of the next installation of the absolutely phenomenal set of events called From Gillette to Brett that look at Sherlock Holmes of the screen. Also events-wise, while we missed the Sherlock Holmes Through Time and Place conference in Minnesota, we'll be featuring a report from the goings on. For topics more controversial, we have the latest goings-on around the so-called "Free Sherlock" lawsuit between Leslie Klinger and the Conan Doyle Estate, Ltd., which indicate that a summary judgment is being requested, with the decision due in the coming weeks. And the mid-year letter from the Baker Street Irregulars' Wiggins, Michael Whelan contains a reprint of "The World of Sherlockians" that was shared on the BSJ website Finally, we concluded with a reading of the Editor's Gas-Lamp on the importance sparking plugs, this time choosing September 1982 (Vol. 32, No. 3). In it, you'll find the definitive and seminal phrase as to what it takes to establish a Sherlockian society. We thought we'd stir up the discussions a bit and try to get to the bottom of a couple of controversies that have been roiling the world of Sherlock Holmes enthusiasts (we're careful to say neither "fans" nor "devotees" at this juncture). The first item of interest that grabbed our attention in early 2013 was the so-called "Free Sherlock" movement. Summed up, this is basically an issue that is being brought to court via a case titled , in which Leslie Klinger, BSI ("The Abbey Grange") is contesting the Conan Doyle Estate's claim that any new content that contains Sherlock Holmes must pay a royalty or license fee to the Estate. Burt and Scott parse through some of the non-technical/legal aspects of the case and discuss what's at stake.Speaking of being at stake, the other item on the docket is the debate as to what in fact constitutes a Sherlockian of good standing? That is, can one have arrived at the doorstep of 221B Baker Street via the BBC series (or Granada, or Universal, etc.) or must one have been schooled only in the printed literature and dress the part of a 1940s joiner? It's quite a debate - one that was taken up vehemently by The Baker Street Babes earlier this year, after the "Elite Devotee Redux" was published in recently resurrected Saturday Review of Literature. We offer our own humble observations on the matter. For those who wish to subscribe to the publication and read all of the very interesting articles therein, you may procure a copy by sending $5 postpaid to Donald K. Pollock, 521 College Avenue, Niagara Falls, NY 14305. An image of the cover and inside cover can be seen below. The Editor's Gas-Lamp: We purposefully revisited the same Gas-Lamp (Vol. 3, No. 2, OS) that we shared on , because Edgar Smith's "Who is a Baker Street Irregular?" seemed to strike the same chord some 65 years later.Links: Les Klinger's site
