She was discovered hitchhiking on a busy interstate. Barefoot. Tasmanian devil boxer shorts. Ripped t-shirt. Her dog — off leash — right beside her as cars raced past them. That's the story Michele Capots told her 16-year-old nephew over dinner. The nephew who had just ghosted her after finding out she'd been hospitalized for severe depression. This episode is about what happens when you finally stop protecting people from your truth — and what it costs you when you don't. Michele is a mental health advocate, speaker, writer and coach who has lived experience with bipolar disorder, multiple hospitalizations, and the thing she calls self-stigma: the moment we take society's cruelest beliefs about mental illness and turn them on ourselves. It is soul-crushing and most of us have no idea we're doing it. That story is the entry point into a much bigger conversation about what self-stigma actually is, why it's far more dangerous than the stigma we receive from others, and how it quietly (and not so quietly) steals our sense of worth, shrinks our expectations of ourselves, and keeps us in the same place long after the crisis has passed. We also get into: -What to actually say to someone who tells you they've been in a psych ward or are managing a mental illness. Spoiler: you don't have to have the perfect words. You just have to stay. -Why mental health and mental wellness are not the same thing, and why collapsing that distinction actually does harm. -The difference between the "I" in illness and the "we" in wellness — one of the most memorable lines you will hear this year. -Why self-compassion isn't soft or optional — it is the thing that dissolves self-stigma, full stop. Michele is the kind of person who makes you feel less alone just by being honest about her own life. This episode is a gift for anyone who has struggled, love someone who struggles, or ever stood there not knowing what the hell to say which is basically all of us. Find Michele on Instagram and read her Substack, The Magic of Mental Wellbeing.  Guest Bio: Michele Capots is a transformational coach, speaker, storyteller, and relentless mental wellness and resilience advocate. Her essays on mental health have appeared in Newsweek, The Washington Post, Marie Claire, among others. Drawing from her own journey through mental health crises, she has been dedicated for close to a decade to inspiring others through theirs. A sought-after speaker and thought leader, she vulnerably shares her insights and lessons around shame, self-worth, resilience, and mental wellness, which involves so much more than just good mental health. She has served as an Executive Committee Member of the Global Mental Health Peer Network, a non-profit of 38 countries worldwide focused on mental health advocacy, and is a board member for Twogere, a nonprofit focused on youth mental health recovery in Uganda. She lives in Arlington, VA. "Stigma doesn't just label people. It disconnects them from themselves." "There's an I in illness and a we in wellness." "We don't get better by ourselves. We need other people. We can't get well on our own." "I don't know what you're going through and I don't know how to help you — but I want you to know I'm here for you if you need me." (on the most powerful thing you can say) "Self-compassion is the hardest thing you'll ever do, but it brings the biggest relief." Ashleigh Spiliopoulou: Deliberate Inconvenience

"Anything will work again, as long as you unplug it long enough, even you." This simple principle serves as the heartbeat for reclaiming a life dedicated to authentic human depth. In a world optimized for digital efficiency and "frictionless" convenience, the true currency of a meaningful life remains the unscalable power of independent thought, presence, and intentional effort. In this episode of Gratitude Through Hard Times, Ashleigh Spiliopoulou explores the growing cultural movement of "Friction Maxing" — the intentional reintroduction of effort, inconvenience, and presence into our daily routines. Ashleigh shares insights from her month-long experiment with deliberate inconvenience, including rawdogging a 24-hour flight to Australia and ditching her headphones on daily runs. Together, the conversation dives into the rise of mainstream AI infiltration, the psychological dangers of AI Psychosis and FOBO (Fear Of Becoming Obsolete), and why healthy friction is ultimately the secret weapon for nervous system regulation, creative clarity, and deep human connection.   10 Memorable Quotes: "In a world of frictionless design, what if we friction maxed a couple things to add a little bit of meaning back into life?" "The more efficient and outsourced we get through really well-designed technology, the more it feels like life is kind of evaporating from us." "Why would I think for myself when AI could think for me?" "Frictionless isn't bad in every scenario." "The process was so beautiful, and then the result was so satisfying." "AI has so much potential and brilliance for so many areas of our lives, but it shouldn't be designed to replace our brain." "It's not necessarily teaching people something new. It's reminding them, this is how you used to live." "First we need to unlearn." "It's rebellious. It's so fun." "Anything will work again, as long as you unplug it long enough, even you." 10 Key Takeaways: The Origin of Friction Maxing: Exploring Catherine Jezer-Morton's January 2026 article in The Cut magazine that sparked a mainstream conversation on adding intentional effort to life. The Falsehood of Frictionless Relationships: Reflecting on Esther Perel's cultural work and how eliminating interpersonal friction directly fuels the loneliness epidemic. The Threat of Cognitive Decay: How outsourcing daily thought processes to technology results in a tangible feeling of your brain disintegrating. Understanding AI Psychosis: Confronting the psychological danger of over-trusting automated companions until you completely lose trust in your own mind. Dismantling FOBO: Analyzing the "Fear Of Becoming Obsolete" and how surrendering creativity and discernment to AI attacks our baseline human self-worth. The No-Headphone Run: Why leaving audio stimulation at home forced a deeper focus on surroundings, leading to a fresher, more imaginative brain. The Gesture of Friendship: How exchanging a frictionless voice note for a handwritten letter to Boston reestablished a visceral, emotional sense of connection. Rawdogging a Flight: The profound creative clarity that emerged from enduring a 24-hour flight to Australia completely detached from movies, podcasts, or Wi-Fi. Unlearning for a 180 World: Recognizing that surviving the modern technological landscape requires us to actively unlearn automatic habits to relearn how to think. Architected Attention: Understanding that tech companies deliberately engineer frictionless designs solely to fork over your attention, money, and will. About our Guest: Ashleigh Spiliopoulou is a freelance journalist and health writer specializing in women's health, travel, and culture. A former heptathlete, her words have appeared in prominent publications including Condé Nast Traveller, Marie Claire, Women's Health, Stylist, Dazed, and Glamour. She is also the Co-Founder of Sunnie Runners, an inclusive London-based run club, and SOLA, a supper club designed for women looking to build personal and professional connections. Built on a foundation of storytelling, her work advocates for the vital necessity of using creative friction to protect human meaning and connection.

It feels like this conversation has been a long time coming. Vic is genuinely honoured to have Shanna Whan on the podcast this week.Shanna is the founder and CEO of Sober in the Country, a national grassroots charity that's been driving radical social impact and real change across rural and remote Australia over the past decade. Through laser-focused bush advocacy, peer-to-peer support, and a refreshingly straightforward message, she's helping shift a deeply ingrained culture. And the message is one we can all get behind, whether we drink or not: it's always #OK2SAYNO to booze.Shanna was awarded an Order of Australia Medal in 2025 for her significant contributions to rural community health. She was named National Australian of the Year (Local Hero) in 2022, and also took out Marie Claire's national Advocate of the Year award that same year. So yes… she's not just talking about change, she's making it happen. In this episode, they chat about life in rural Australia, the pressure to be strong, stoic, and self-reliant in farming communities, the isolation of rural life, and how hard it can be to say no to alcohol when it's so deeply ingrained. They also explore how that's starting to shift, slowly, but meaningfully. And they establish very early on that Vic would absolutely not survive in the outback, (even if she did have a hat with corks hanging off it!)This one takes you beyond the front gate and into the reality of life in the outback, an honest, eye-opening conversation with a truly remarkable human. To find out more about Shanna and her incredible work head to https://www.soberinthecountry.org or follow them on socials @sober_in_the_country and to help raise awareness please add #OK2SAYNO to your socials.

"Live From New York, it's Saturday Night!" That single sentence has become a catchphrase for devotees of comedy and popular culture for more than 50 years—generations of fans who willingly turn their attentions from the height of weekend revelry to the televised antics of Saturday Night Live.  As this illustrious broadcast wraps its 51st season, we're releasing an encore of our 2025 chat with SNL's photographer-in-residence Mary Ellen Matthews, while we busy ourselves backstage to bring you some exciting changes and an upcoming new look to our own show. Week in, week out for more than two decades, Mary Ellen has conjured visual magic behind the scenes, creating inventive and irreverent portraits that air for three seconds each as so-called "bumpers" that transition to and from the show's commercial breaks.  During our spirited chat about what is arguably the world's best photo gig, we follow Mary Ellen from a fateful 1993 phone call, inviting her to assist the show's founding photographer Edie Baskin, through her journey from mentee to team leader. Along the way, we pull back the curtain on the creation of some iconic images and learn what it takes to be "in the driver's seat [with] a whole busload of very important people to take care of." "My job is to make this easy and fast," she notes. "And I don't want anyone to be overthinking anything because they've got enough to worry about with all the sketches and all the pre-tapes and their responsibilities to the rest of the show, which is the most important thing." Episode Timeline:  3:00: Living the dream as SNL's resident photographer while being creative under stressful deadline pressure. 4:44: Mary Ellen's early immersion in photography, at the side of her hobbyist father. 6:56: Arriving in NYC, early work for a record label, and the call to assist SNL's founding photographer in residence, Edie Baskin. 11:55: SNL's transition from film to digital, plus the cameras Mary Ellen shoots with today.  15:37: Conceptualizing the weekly portrait shoots and collaborating with subjects. 20:31: Behind-the-scenes of a dicey photo shoot, plus SNL's weekly production timeline. 27:25: Episode Break 28:12: Beyond portraits, the images Mary Ellen shoots as props for SNL sketches—sometimes with a 4x5.  33:11: The scheduling of SNL portrait shoots and getting portrait subjects to have fun. 36:34: Testing for shoots, the atmosphere on-set, and flying by the seat of your pants.  40:06: Communicating with a celebrity's team to get everyone on the same page about shoots and concepts. 42:30: The general workflow of SNL portrait sessions: from shoot preparation to editing and post-production. 45:07: Advice for emerging photographers looking for work or applying for an internship.   Guest Bio: As a top entertainment portrait photographer, Mary Ellen Matthews is specialized in creating iconic images of well-known personalities—from pop stars to sports legends to rock gods. Since 1999, she has been photographer-in-residence at Saturday Night Live, where she's responsible for creating the distinctive look of the show's still images. Through her exuberant presence that puts subjects at ease, her creative and playful styling on set and intensive fine-tuning in post, Matthews produces unique and recognizable portraits under the manic deadlines of live TV. What's more, in 2010, she began directing SNL's video clips, including the show's opening title sequence.   Recent clients include Peacock, Hulu, Netflix, Paramount Pictures, 20th Century Studios, and Prime Video, as well as publications such as Variety, Rolling Stone, Marie Claire, and the Spanish edition of Harper's Bazaar. Most notably, in March 2025, Matthews's first book, The Art of the SNL Portrait, was released to mark the 50th anniversary of this revolution in late night TV. S

Ted Gibson and Jason Backe Live at ABS ChicagoSome conversations remind you why you got into this industry in the first place. This is one of them.Recorded live at ABS Chicago with co-host Geno Chapman, Corey sits down with Ted Gibson and Jason Backe for an hour covering three decades of hustle, heartbreak, reinvention, and beauty from the inside out.The Roads That Led HereNeither Ted nor Jason took a straight path in. Jason was a raver kid in Minneapolis who walked into beauty school and for the first time felt seen by a teacher. Ted was a Texas athlete who walked into a salon called Zan and Friends, saw a room full of stylish people in starched Wranglers, and decided that was the life. What followed was barber school, a cross-country move seeking fame, a detour to Atlanta to answer phones while switching his license, and a room with Confederate flags on the wall. He stayed anyway. The sacrifices nobody sees are always the foundation of the success they do.What Fame Actually CostsSaying yes to Angelina Jolie's hair for Tomb Raider changed everything. Vogue. Marie Claire. A PR firm that told them to drop the name Fame and call it Ted Gibson. A Fifth Avenue salon. A DC licensing deal tied to the Real Housewives. A move to LA where they gambled everything and learned more than they earned. Three years in Palm Springs that have brought more inspiration than anywhere else they've lived. Success is not linear. It never was.The Client Relationship... and When It EndsTed's rule: treat every client like it's the first time you've seen her. She is a different person. Jason goes deeper, describing 20 years of New York clients who didn't care what it cost, and how COVID ended it overnight. He had to create a new category... client friends. Losing them felt like grief. It changed how he understood his work entirely.Ted Gibson Beauty Wellness ScienceAfter Ted's mom was diagnosed with dementia, they dove into brain health and found lion's mane mushroom. They felt it. They kept going. A scientist in Oregon with 30 years studying fungi and algae helped them build a superfood powder: lion's mane, chaga, reishi, tremella, and blue-green algae in a coconut milk base with vanilla and coffee. Tremella is shown to be 100 times more effective than hyaluronic acid at moisture retention. Mix it into anything. A book is coming.Convergence: Beauty Wellness Science SummitMay 2-3 in Palm Springs. But for me, nothing could be further from the truth. What I see everyday at WAGEC, I see people [in our team] who are really good at their jobs, with incredible heart and soul and professionalism and adding wisdom to some of the most complex problems in our community."Links:Connect with Nicole and the work of WAGEC at www.wagec.org.auConnect with Nicole Yade on LinkedinInstagram follow Nicole Yade (@nicoleyadee)Connect with Rebecca Allen on LinkedinGet your copy of Rebecca's free guide, 7 Strategic Shifts to Position You as a High-Impact LeaderRate, Review, & Follow our Show on Apple Podcasts:Also, if you haven't done so already, follow the podcast. This week on Hurdle, I’m sitting down with Jasmine Caccomo, an entrepreneur and elite personal stylist who has spent over 15 years redefining the intersection of fashion and professional sports. Jasmine has built an incredible career styling some of the biggest names in the industry, most notably Alex Morgan, whom she’s worked with for the past 13 years. In this episode, Jasmine talks about how playing soccer from a young age instilled the discipline, accountability, and “figure it out” mentality necessary to navigate the world of entrepreneurship. We also chat about her early days working in the fashion closets of Cosmopolitan and Marie Claire, and the bold leap she took to establish her own styling business. Plus, she gives me the lowdown on how she handles high-pressure moments—like styling Hilary Knight for the Oscars just days after an Olympic season—and how she sets boundaries as a business owner and mother. Also: Why presence is absolutely vital for her to do both well, and the essential lesson of learning to ask for help. IN THIS EPISODE, WE DISCUSS: The Athlete Mentality: How her background as a hurdler and soccer player provided the work ethic for her business. The "Editorial Trenches": Realities of working in fashion closets and the 80/20 split between business and styling. Transitioning to Freelance: Taking the leap from a steady editorial job to building a personal brand. Styling Elite Athletes: The process of onboarding clients like Alex Morgan and translating an athlete's power into a wardrobe. Modern Athleisure: Defining "upscale athleisure" and why leggings will never truly be dead. The Glass Ball Theory: Managing the juggle of motherhood and entrepreneurship by identifying what can drop and what can’t. QUOTABLE MOMENTS: "I’ve always had that ‘figure it out on my own’ mindset. You have to figure out how to train that works for you." "It’s about bringing out that inner personality through, externally, their wardrobe." It's an oft-cited (though poorly citationed) aphorism of writing that you should “chase your character up a tree and throw rocks at them." Well, worldbuilding is what gives you the tree and the rocks! So how does your world provide opportunities and obstacles for your characters? Guest Carissa Broadbent joins us to explore making the relationship between character and conflict feel natural and organic through the world they exist in. Characters are products of their circumstances – So how has the world shaped those for them? What systems and structures have shaped their pasts, and how has that past shaped what they want, what they expect, and what they think is possible? Where does that collide with what other characters want and think? AN ENGLISHMAN IN NEW YORK — If you can count yourself among the lucky ones who've met Robert Priest in person, any chance you remember what you were wearing? Well, fear not: He does. According to his business partner, the designer Grace Lee, Priest possesses a near-photographic memory of how people present themselves. And those first impressions last a lifetime.  To hear him talk, though, it's not at all about being judgy. Priest is just naturally consumed with all things visual. He has been since childhood. (He gets it from his mother). To him, design is everything. Priest has dedicated his 50-plus-year career to the relentless pursuit of taste, style, and fashion. And it shows. He has led design teams at all of the big magazines: GQ, House & Garden, InStyle, Newsweek, and Esquire (Twice!) But there's another side to Robert Priest. He's a huge sports fan. And designing magazines is his sport. Indeed, like a head coach, he's hired to win. And the trophies in this case are readership, advertising, circulation, and buzz—and when that's all taken care of, the design awards start to pile up—they certainly have for him. We talked to Priest about his early days in London, when he—and The Beatles and the Rolling Stones—were just getting started, about why soccer is the real football, and the rise and fall of one of the biggest magazine launches in history, Condé Nast Portfolio. — This episode is made possible by our friends at Commercial Type and Freeport Press. THE LAST CELEBRITY MAGAZINE EDITOR — Maggie Bullock: It's 2016. Rachel and I are sitting at our desks on the 24th floor of the Hearst Tower working at Elle magazine when the glass double doors blow open—or at least that's how I remember it—and a vision of white-blonde hair, metallic pants, and checkerboard platforms, breezes into the office speaking in a commanding British accent to two or three minions in her wake. There are no cameras in sight, but it's as if we're watching a grand entrance and a reality TV show. You can almost feel the wind machines in the air, which is what it's like pretty much any time you witness a Joanna Coles appearance in the corridors of Hearst. There's just something cinematic about her. Rachel Baker: Joanna started her career as a reporter in London, moving to New York in the late 1990s to be The Guardian's New York bureau chief. Next, she shifted into editing. First, as an articles editor at New York magazine, then over to More magazine. By 2006, she grabbed hold of the editor-in-chiefship at Marie Claire, part of Hearst, and in 2012 became the editor-in-chief of the company's largest title, Cosmopolitan. Maggie Bullock: By the time she strode into the Elle offices in 2016, she was much more than an editor. She was also a reality TV star, a television producer, an author, a public speaker, a driving force of the “girl boss” movement, besties with Sheryl Sandberg, and a celebrity in her own right, who famously ran meetings from the helm of a treadmill walking desk. Rachel Baker: The Jo-Co who walked into our office in 2016 had been newly-crowned as Chief Content Officer of Hearst Magazines—the first to hold the title—and tasked with consolidating the creative side of the 100-year-old publishing giant in the new digital-first era. Maggie and I are a longtime print editors, so you can imagine how that sounded to us. But even through our fear goggles, we could also see that Joanna was ready to do the necessary surgery that other print editors didn't have the stomach for, so that legacy magazines might live to see another day. Maggie Bullock: Joanna was certainly the most famous women's magazine editor at Hearst at that time. But what wasn't clear back then, and is undeniable now, is that she was the last of her breed. There was a rich history of iconic women's magazine editors that came before Joanna, but can you think of an iconic, larger-than-life one that came after her? Rachel Baker: Joanna left Hearst in 2018, roughly around the same time that both Maggie and I did, and today she's a board member for major tech companies like Sonos and Snapchat and an executive producer for major Hollywood projects, including an upcoming Amazon series starring Priyanka Chopra. And she is, as ever, a baller. Setting up our interview, with what lesser individuals might call a “personal assistant,” but Joanna has anointed Chief Get-It-Done Officer, when we met JC via Zoom, she was without pretense or treadmill desk. She was disarmingly down to earth. Maggie Bullock: And yet somehow she still emanated that chutzpah or moxie—or maybe we should bring back the word “pizazz” to describe it. The X-factor that, in a 44-floor media empire brimming with big egos and considerable talent, made her one of media's biggest stars.ng. — This episode is made possible by our friends at Commercial Type and Freeport Press. Creating Safe Spaces for Women to Explore Desire: The Story of Skirt Club

Season 6, Episode 726:  Surprisingly, Genevieve LeJeune founded Skirt Club to address a need she felt in her own life, only to discover 25,000 other women felt the same way. The private members club creates women-only spaces where nervous systems can relax, and genuine connection happens without performance or fear of judgment. After spending 15 years in finance enduring workplace harassment that was simply normalized, Gen witnessed how women of her generation were conditioned to survive in male-dominated environments. She started hosting champagne parties that grew from 15 to 150 attendees within a year, revealing just how many women needed a supportive environment to explore their sexuality without shame. (The demand was staggering.) Through building communities across 36 cities worldwide with 27,200 members, Gen discovered that women's fundamental needs are surprisingly universal across cultures. Her events have evolved beyond sexuality into something broader to include embodiment, connection, and authentic self-expression. When women abandon people-pleasing patterns and reconnect with their bodies, they experience profound personal liberation. Lejeune emphasizes that sisterhood and reduced judgment among women could genuinely transform society. By helping each other ask for support and building confidence through collaboration rather than competition, women create the foundation for lasting peace. Key Takeaways: • **Women's behavior and openness fundamentally changes in all-female spaces** — nervous systems relax and genuine vulnerability emerges without male presence, creating conditions for authentic connection that mixed-gender environments cannot replicate. • **Bisexual and bi-curious women represent an underserved market hungry for community** — the jump from 15 to 150 members in one year demonstrates massive unmet demand for judgment-free spaces where women can explore sexuality openly. • **Overcoming shame requires both safe spaces and exposure to diverse perspectives** — cultural conditioning around female desire is universal across cultures, but can be collectively unlearned through supportive communities and exposure to how other women authentically live. GENEVIEVE LEJEUNE is the founder of Skirt Club, a private members club for bi-curious & bisexual women. With more than 25,000 members globally, women are more interested in each other than ever. She was the first to curate luxurious global events where women can put their own desires first, and gain confidence from the bedroom to the boardroom. A leading figure in the movement for women's sexual empowerment, Genevieve has been interviewed for high-profile publications such as Marie Claire, Elle Magazine, Cosmo, Bloomberg, Rolling Stone and the Sunday Times.

Happy pub' day Elizabeth! Award-winning author and journalist Elizabeth Arnott spoke with us about her early studies of serial killers, a wild journalism career, and her latest period-set crime novel THE SECRET LIVES OF MURDERERS' WIVES. Elizabeth Arnott has written critically acclaimed historical fiction as Lizzie Pook (her maiden name). As a journalist, she covered everything from true crime to Arctic exploration and appeared in publications such as The Sunday Times, National Geographic, The New York Times Book Review, and The Guardian among others. She has described her much-anticipated latest historical crime novel as Mad Men with murders, and Lessons in Chemistry with a body count. The Secret Lives of Murderers' Wives [available for pre-order and landing March 3, 2026; Berkley Hardcover], is a story that “... centers on three unlikely friends—all former wives of serial killers—and their efforts to solve a string of local killings in 1966 California.” The book was acquired in a heated seven-way auction and named one of “The Best Books for Book Clubs in 2026” by Glamour, and among “The 10 Most-Anticipated Mystery-Thriller Books of 2026” by Marie Claire. Parade wrote of the book, “... a story that feels like Bright Young Women collided with Mindhunter …. a propulsive, period-set whodunit perfect for anyone who loves early criminal profiling and Mad Men-era aesthetics with bite.” [This episode is sponsored by Ulysses.
