On today's show I covered the late breaking news that there were Nuclear Documents hanging out at Mar E Lago and then I welcomed both Nayyera Haq and Wajahat Ali together. Get his book Go Back To Where You Came From: And, Other Helpful Recommendations on Becoming American which will be published in January 2022 by Norton. He frequently appears on television and podcasts for his brilliant, incisive, and witty political commentary. Born in the Bay Area, California to Pakistani immigrant parents, Ali went to school wearing Husky pants and knowing only three words of English. He graduated from UC Berkeley with an English major and became a licensed attorney. He knows what it feels like to be the token minority in the classroom and the darkest person in a boardroom. Like Spiderman, he's often had the power and responsibility of being the cultural ambassador of an entire group of people, those who are often marginalized, silenced, or reduced to stereotypes. His essays, interviews, and reporting have appeared in The New York Times, The Atlantic, The Washington Post, The Guardian, and New York Review of Books. Today, I interviewed Donna Cutting and have unofficially proclaimed her my emotional support human because of her cheery, positive vibes. We discussed employment branding, the great resignation and how to put employees first. I thoroughly enjoyed the conversation and this you will too. - Jim Stroud NOTES AND QUESTIONS ASKED IN THIS PODCAST The past two years have been extraordinary in the world of work. Due to the pandemic and now this post-Covid world, a lot of workers are trying to find themselves. I think that's why this phenomenon of The Great Resignation is taking place. In this atmosphere, I've been told that the best thing a company can do is instill a sense of purpose in their team. If that's true, what would you say are the benefits of defining purpose for your team? How do you define your team's purpose - and use it in practice? A growing trend in the world of work is "location-agnostic pay" where people are paid the same salary no matter where they are in the world. I know several companies are offering this to be competitive. It makes me wonder, what is the best way to insure fair compensation? Many companies have moved to a WFH (work from home) model when the pandemic hit and although the trend now seems to be a hybrid office (some days at home/some days at the office), new management challenges are surfacing. People who work from home may be more favored because of the close interaction causing remote workers to feel less valued. Do you have any suggestions on how companies can keep remote teams connected? Should remote workers be handled differently than those who regularly come into the office? And how can companies encourage diversity and inclusion in these situations? We spend so much of our lives at work. According to the website - ReviseSociology, we will spend 92,120 hours in our lifetime at work; assuming you work full time from age 18 to 67. That's a lot of time to spend with people you may or may not like. I would think a little bit of kindness at work would make those years feel more rewarding. Can you offer any tips on how companies can cultivate kindness and compassion at work? Today's show rundown: Chucks picturing Joe Biden going into a chess match with other world leaders, who would Biden beat lol? We have a president who no one has confidence any longer, and you cant cover for him any longer, he is just a disaster. Basically, we have put a person in the Presidency who is dealing with some sort of age-related dementia. Omicron – it is highly contagious, but it isn't very virulent. Over a month ago, we explained to our listeners that this is how viruses work. Over time they become easier to spread, but less deadly, the virus doesn't want to kill the host. But no one is talking about this, why does mainstream media NOT cover these facts? We meet Melik Abdul from Project 21. He has been in D.C. for 20+ years. What is Project 21, what is its purpose and what is it? Melik sums it up as – Project 21 exists to get the conservative message out there. It acts as a hub for the conservative movement, especially blacks in the conservative movement. Melik talks a bit about where we are now as far as racism goes, and how MLK would feel about the situation now days. Bio: A native of Jackson, Mississippi, Project 21 member Melik Abdul has been an “East of the River” resident of Washington, D.C. for close to 20 years. After several years of working on political campaigns, he began consulting with conservative groups to help them build out their communication and policy infrastructure. He is a regular political commentator on networks including the Fox News Channel, One America News, the Black News Channel and HILL TV. He is the author of "Leader Board: The DNA of High-Performance Teams", "The Servant Leader's Manifesto", and “Be a J.E.D.I. Leader, Not a Boss”. Omar shares his journey to the top, the cost to him as a Black man in America, and how he came to speak out and no longer compromise his identity and his beliefs. Key topics: Omar's first experience with racism was when he was voted Prom King of his high school in Louisiana. Why it's essential that every CEO needs to take action against racism, or they are not real leaders Check out his playlist, the TV shows he recommends, and the books he reads Bio OMAR L HARRIS (Charlotte, NC, born in Pittsburgh, PA) is the founder of Intent Consulting and TYMPO.io (the world's first and best SaaS application for employee inclusion), a Former GM (GSK and Allergan), Business and Servant Leadership Thought-Leader, Speaker, Award-Winning Bestselling Author of 5 books, including "Be a J.E.D.I. The guys celebrate the life of Basketball Hall of Famer Elgin Baylor who passed away at 86. Discussion on how Elgin handled Donald Sterling during his time as Clippers GM. Elgin was ahead of his time as a player. He was one of the first black executives and one of the first to speak out against Donald Sterling, before Sterling's racist video came out. Chat on Larry Brown talking about recruiting Charlie Scott, the first black player in the ACC for Dean Smith and the North Carolina Tar Heels. Also a chat on what Dean did to fight for racial equality. The guys discuss how its disgusting that the NCAA didn't take care of the women athletes during the tournament as they have the men.Mike Hill - Co-Host, Start Your Day w Sharon and Mike on BNCConsiders himself a broadcaster, because he is just into so many things. Talks about his military background and how it lead to his career in media. When people tell him to stick to sports, he hits back with 'I'm more than just sports'. Promotes his morning show 'Start Your Day w Sharon and Mike' on the Black News Channel. BNC started last year and was rebooted earlier this year. Working with Sharon Reed is working out very well and the channel is for all people to watch. BNC gives voices to people you otherwise wouldn't hear from as well as give those you want to hear from more time to be heard. The NCAA looks really bad how they treated the NCAA women athletes during the tournament. The women know that many folks have their back and wouldn't stand for the disparities. We saw the same thing with the WNBA & NBA bubbles. The women have been totally been disrespected. Loves that all the athletes have a platform. All athletes are Colin Kaepernick now. Remembers Elgin Baylor as one of the leagues first superstar. Mike would like to see more black executives. While Mike was working for the Clippers, Elgin always had a smile on his face. Talks about how he decompresses after a work day. Covering college basketball this past year has been great, especially with what they had to deal with this year.
