After all, it has so many movie genre ingredients and if you throw Nicolas Cage into the recipe well hot damn. And if Nicolas Cage wasn't enough, it also has Diane Kruger,  Sean Bean, Jon Voight, Harvey Keitel & Christopher Plummer, all of whom we don't remember being in this movie at all. So this should be fun.Do You Remember Liking This Movie?

For the third month of 1995, the boys are looking to tip the scales with their latest film! There's been a mysterious death on a miniature Maine island - the elderly woman's caretaker (Kathy Bates) is the most likely suspect. The local constable (Christopher Plummer) is convinced she's done it, based entirely on his suspicion over the equally mysterious death of her husband (David Strathairn) twenty years prior. The only thing that might save her is the return of her daughter (Jennifer Jason Leigh), who just might be the key to both the past and presents. Whether this new death eclipses the earlier one, it's up to us to discover the true nature of.….Dolores Claiborne!

At long last Mark Maddox returns as we wrap up our look at the first six Star Trek feature films with STAR TREK VI: THE UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY. Since this is the last movie to showcase the entire original cast, we take the opportunity to mention how happy we are that VI was the film they went out on and that everyone gets chances to shine. I'm just thrilled we finally get Captain Sulu! We discuss the production push to get this into theaters to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the premiere of the TV show. We praise the return of Nicholas Meyer to the director's chair and point out the many touches that seem to stem from his involvement. This includes the joy of having the Wold Newton family tree brought into onscreen Star Trek, which is probably peak geekiness. The intricate nature of the film's plot comes under scrutiny with us listing the various elements that are woven together perfectly to move the story forward. We discuss the dialog with a few clips to give a taste of the intelligence of the script. Our admiration for the performances gets plenty of time and we single out Christopher Plummer's fantastic turn as Klingon General Chang. Just how much Shakespeare can be wedged into a Trek film, anyway? And is Chang the series' best villain? Others may disagree with us but we make our case.   If you have anything to add to the show thebloodypit@gmail.com is the place to write. We love hearing from you and if you want to work ahead it looks like we will be talking about the Star Trek animated series in the future. Thank you for listening and we'll be back soon.

Twenty years ago, Two-time Oscar winner Oliver Stone (Platoon, JFK, Wall Street) finally had the opportunity to direct the grand-scale historical epic which he and several of his directing peers (Scorsese, Kubrick) had been trying to helm for decades.....the story of Alexander the Great who once lead a MASSIVE Macedonian Empire which at one point comprised around half of the land mass in the Eastern Hemisphere during ancient times.  He lived one hell of a life conquering much of the ancient world and here he is played by Colin Farrell (In Bruges, The Banshees of Inisherin, The Penguin) whose casting DID raise some eyebrows at the time of release....especially given that he portrayed this character with his heavy Irish accent.  And beyond that, Oscar-winner Angelina Jolie (Girl Interrupted, Salt, Mr. & Mrs. Smith) was cast as his mother Olympias....even though she was only one year older than Farrell at the time.  Beyond that, the stellar cast also includes Val Kilmer, Rosario Dawson, Anthony Hopkins, and the late, great Christopher Plummer among several others.  Also co-written by Oliver Stone, this would also be THE last big budget film he would helm as the $150 million production was not only a commercial flop but also destroyed by critics at the time of release. And yet....a few years later, Stone was able to release his own extended "Director's Cut" on DVD (and eventually Blu-Ray) which is considered by many (himself included) to be a far superior version of this story as it includes 40 additional minutes of footage including some extended action sequences.  So in reviewing THAT version of this film, let's find out if Alexander DID in fact live up to his title. ;) Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Dana and Tom with 5x Club member, Sarah Duncan, and new guest, Liz Arnold (Liz and a Movie), discuss the 2019 whodunnit, Knives Out for its 5th Anniversary: written and directed by Rian Johnson, music by Nathan Johnson, starring Daniel Craig, Ana De Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Chris Evans, LaKeith Stanfield, Don Johnson, Toni Collette, Michael Shannon, and Christopher Plummer.Plot Summary: Rian Johnson's Knives Out is a gleeful whodunit that reinvents the genre while paying homage to its classical roots. Set against the backdrop of a sprawling Gothic mansion, the film begins with the suspicious death of Harlan Thrombey, a wealthy mystery writer, after a family gathering. Enter Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig), a gentleman detective with a syrupy Southern drawl and an eye for deceit. What unfolds is a deliciously twisty investigation into Harlan's eccentric and entitled family, each of whom has motives aplenty. Blanc's razor-sharp intuition and eccentric charm lead him through the maze of alibis and half-truths spun by the quarrelsome Thrombeys. At the heart of the mystery is Marta Cabrera, Harlan's devoted nurse, whose genuine care for her employer is her saving grace—or perhaps her undoing. As the layers of this intricate puzzle peel away, Marta's role becomes pivotal, bringing to light the dark undercurrents of greed and betrayal lurking beneath the family's polished veneer.Chapters:00:00 Introduction and Welcome to Our Guests01:32 Getting to Know Liz Arnold03:47 Cast and Recognition for Knives Out06:17 Personal Connections to 'Knives Out'09:53 What is Knives Out About?13:56 Knives Out's Effect on the Mystery Genre21:30 Plot Summary for Knives Out23:00 Did You Know?24:33 First Break25:18 What's Happening with Sarah and Liz27:07 Ask Dana Anything35:07 Best Performance(s)44:55 Best/Favorite/Indelible Scene(s)53:41 Second Break54:44 In Memoriam55:27 Best/Funniest Lines59:43 The Stanley Rubric - Legacy01:06:09 The Stanley Rubric - Impact/Significance01:10:23 The Stanley Rubric - Novelty01:15:10 The Stanley Rubric - Classicness01:18:37 The Stanley Rubric - Rewatchability01:22:48 The Stanley Rubric - Audience Score and Final Total01:23:58 Remaining Questions for Knives Out01:32:14 Thank You to Our Guests01:34:12 CreditsYou can also get this episode in full video on YouTube. You can now follow us on Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, or TikTok (@gmoatpodcast).For more on the episode, go to: https://www.ronnyduncanstudios.com/post/knives-out-2019-ft-sarah-duncan-and-liz-arnoldFor the entire rankings list so far, go to: https://www.ronnyduncanstudios.com/post/greatest-movie-of-all-time-listKeywords:Knives Out, mystery genre, film review, Rian Johnson, movie analysis, character dynamics, audience reception, film performances, cinematic themes, podcast, Knives Out, film analysis, character performance, best scenes, family dynamics, final reveal, legacy, humor, audience reception, novelty, classicness, rewatchabilityRonny Duncan Studios

Closing out a decade comprising two iconic hits (Heat, The Last of the Mohicans), Oscar-nominated director Michael Mann decided to next collaborate with Oscar-winning writer Eric Roth (Forest Gump) on this docudrama about a controversial story which ran at the highly-rated news-program "60 Minutes" just a few years prior.  This news segment focused on an interview with "Big Tobacco" whistleblower Jeffrey Wigand (Russel Crowe) and what damaging secrets he was able to review about the questionable business practices of his former employer, Brown & Williamson.  Unfortunately this segment didn't air right away resulting from various complicating factors including political concerns at the network (CBS) airing it, ongoing litigation from Brown & Williamson, and Wigand's own personal history coming to light.  The producer on this segment and the other key "insider" in this story was 60 Minutes' Lowell Bergman played by Oscar-winner Al Pacino.  And what results is a stirring film which was beloved by critics though not by audiences....it would also receive seven Oscar nominations including for Best Picture.  It remains one of the best films from a sterling year (1999) for cinema and also featured a stacked cast including Diane Venora, Christopher Plummer, Phillip Baker Hall, Michael Gambon, Debi Mazar, Gina Gershon, and Bruce McGill.Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Send us a textThis week on Fabulous Film & Friends it's time to embrace our inner sap as we compare two seminal historically-themed weepie romances that have managed to endure, despite being laden with copious amounts of kettle corn, enough to fill two silos full really: 1980's Somewhere in Time, written by Richard Matheson directed by  Jeannot Szwarc starring Christopher Reeve, Jane Seymour and Christopher Plummer against 1997's Titanic written and directed by James Cameron and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, Billy Zane, David Warner, Francis Fisher, Gloria Stuart, Bill Paxton and Kathy Bates.I'm your host Gino Caputi and this  week I have a full cast of romantics, the king of Salt Lake City, Burton Brown, my kid sister and James Cameron enthusiast, Roseanne Caputi, Joe Field  most sensitive author and hypnotherapist in Texas, and Mr. Rom-com himself, George Young! Before we jump into the abyss the synopses: Somewhere in Time's Richard Collier is an coming college playwright who, following a successful and highly touted college production is visited by an elderly woman who hands him an old gold watch and whispers , “Come Back to Me!”  Eight years later, Richard, now a successful playwright in Chicago goes on a bit of an unscheduled vacation to overcome writer's block, stopping at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island in Michigan. In the hotel museum, he sees the photo of Elise McKenna an incomparably  beautiful and famous actress from the turn of the 20th Century and he is immediately captivated by her beauty and becomes obsessed with learning all about her. Upon discovering that Elise was the woman who handed him the gold watch, he wills himself back in time to the year 1914 to meet her through a form of hypnosis. When they meet: FIREWORKS! But can their love stand the test of time? Titanic recounts the heartrending love affair of poor artist Jack Dawson and high society dame Rose Dewitt Buakater who met and fell in love on the doomed ocean liner four days before it hit an iceberg and sunk on that fateful night in 1912.  But can their love survive the tragedy?  Which film reigns as King of the Corn?Find out!  Follow the FFF Facebook page!https://www.facebook.com/groups/fabulousfilmandfriends Watch the podcast on Youtube https://youtu.be/sbIR1TuBinc

This 1987 buddy cop comedy is full of things that make us giggle, such as Dan Aykroyd's amazingly square Joe Friday characterization, Tom Hanks' effortless (and award worthy?) performance as Pep Streebeck, Christopher Plummer's delicious villanous turn, Dabney Coleman's lisp and, of course, vibrator repair. Welcome to Cyberpunk Cinema – the Definitive Dive into the Dark Future of Science Fiction. I am your host, Anthony La Pira, and I will be taking you on a cinematic journey through the sprawling cityscapes, the crippling datastorms, and the cybernetic implants that encompass all things Cyberpunk. In this week's episode, I will be breaking-down the 1995 cyberpunk psychological end-of-world thriller, 12 Monkeys – directed by Terry Gilliam; written by David Webb Peoples & Janet Peoples; inspired by the film “La Jetee” by Chris Marker; starring Bruce Willis, Madeleine Stowe, Brad Pitt, Jon Seda, David Morse, and Christopher Plummer. In a future world devastated by disease, a convict is sent back in time to gather information about the man-made virus that wiped out most of the human population on the planet.12 Monkeys was a film I saw for the first time as a VHS rental in 1996. I did not see it in the movie theater. At that point, I had not seen the French New Wave film that inspired it, La Jetee (that wouldn't happen until 1999). For the 17-year old me who was wired into science-fiction, cyberpunk, and all things end of the world, this hit every freaking box. It is one of the best mindfuck films out there and I love it.So, do me a favor – it's time to access your cranial jacks, boot up your Ono-Sendai Cyberspace 7, and slap on your damn mirror-shades. On this episode of the podcast, with the recent passing of Donald Sutherland, now seemed like the right time to revisit the Bob Clark thriller, Murder by Decree. This is a late 70s feature, imagining Sherlock Holmes and Watson on the hunt for the infamous Whitechapel butcher. And the cast is absolutely top-drawer, with Christopher Plummer, James Mason, John Gielgud, and Dead Ringers' Geneviève Bujold. Sutherland makes an appearance as a psychic, and he's pretty great, though nothing like the real-life character on which his character is based. The last time we tackled similar subject matter, was a podcast recorded in London the night after we did the Jack the Ripper tour. For those who are interested, here is a link to Hands of the Ripper, which Jeff and I recorded after a few beers from our South Kensington hotel accommodations.

"What is it you can't face?" We watched "The Sound of Music" from 1965 with our friend Mitchell Anderson and we could never answer to a whistle! Whether you grew up in a "The Sound of Music" house, a "Mary Poppins" house, or both we all grew up with a song in our hearts thanks to the legendary, the one and only Dame Julie Andrews. Even if you (sadly) didn't come up watching this movie you most likely know ALL the songs - they're built into the fabric of our culture whether you like it or not. Was "Sixteen Going on Seventeen" in a shampoo commercial? Why exactly is "My Favorite Things" now suddently a Christmas song? Listen, theres a reason pop stars are giving up residuals to include samples of these songs - the music slaps and it will just make your music better (we're looking at you Gwen Stafani and Ariana Grande).  Aside from Julie Andrews, AND the iconic music we are also here to talk about one miss Eleanor Parker as The Baroness. While Julie is serving humble beginnings and dresses evern the poor don't want, Eleanor Parker invented glamour and is forever the Queen of looks. Aboslutely no notes. This movie may be pushing three hours, but we don't care - it flies by. The last act might be a little uncomfortable to get through for modern audiences and we get it, but Christopher Plummer sees that flag hanging above his door, yanks it down and rips it to shreds with his bare hands. It's been dramatized in radio on the program Escape, in 1943, and even the Dreamworks film “The Road to Eldorado” can be said to be loosely based on it. J.M. Barrie called it, “the most audacious thing in fiction”. It inspired T.S. Eliot to write a poem when he was young. Kingsley Amis called it, “grossly overrated”. Overrated? Maybe. Audacious? Absolutely.
