Join this incredible power-hour as we discover ways to improve our brain's future! Welcoming special guests, Emily Clionsky, MD and Mitchell Clionsky, PhD, authors of the new book DEMENTIA PREVENTION: Using Your Head to Save Your Brain (Hopkins Press, April 4, 2023). And their message is a clear one – dementia is not inevitable! Furthermore, it is preventable in 1 out of 2 people! But that isn't just their opinion, their work is deeply steeped in research.Drs. Clionsky, a physician and neuropsychologist couple have cared for their own parents with dementia, and talk about ways to improve your brain's future, many of which may seem surprising. From vitamins, to your activities, social infrastructure, even mental outlooks, and even how you breathe while you sleep and so much more can play a significant role in how dementia may impact our lives. In fact, in Dementia Prevention: Using Your Head to Save Your Brain, they share 20 factors that impact dementia risk, including 17 that are changeable in adulthood as well as proven psychological methods to change your habits and health to alter your brain's future. They educate us on the various types of dementia and clear up some confusion we may have on this topic. But in this episode, they also offer a cliff-notes and layman's understanding of what exactly is happening when dementia takes hold, allowing us to better understand how we can utilize our stakeholder opportunity to circumvent its potential onset. But this neuropsychologist team also focuses on areas often overlooked such as hearing, vision, and the many health factors such as blood pressure, exercise and sugar levels that are important to be aware of as it relates to dementia. They echo a welcoming sense of empowerment for everyone, even those who may have a genetic predisposition for dementia, to take control and change several risk factors in their favor.Together, they have treated more than 25,000 patients with cognitive impairment and are responsible for developing the Memory Orientation Screening Test (MOST), which has been used by hundreds of doctors. DEMENTIA PREVENTION: Using Your Head to Save Your Brain is the culmination of 45 years of extensive clinical evaluation and treatment. It brings together proven science from a wide spectrum of medical specialties -- ones that often do not talk to one another or read the others' research. Drs. Emily and Mitchell Clionsky skip the fads, the unsupported claims of advertised products, and fringe theories. Emily Clionsky, MD is an internal medicine doctor with 25 years of experience and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. She has treated thousands of patients with memory loss at her private practice. Mitchell Clionsky, PhD is a board-certified clinical neuropsychologist with 45 years of experience evaluating and treating patients with cognitive impairment, dementia, ADHD, and traumatic brain injury. Have you ever wondered what makes life worthwhile? In this Aging GreatFULLy power-hour we take a deep dive into exploring what gives life meaning–in simple, yet powerful ways—that result in life enrichment and transformation. Welcoming special guest and author of the perfect new book for this conversation, A Worthwhile Life: How to Find Meaning, Build Connection, and Cultivate Purpose, Michael Westover.Westover helps us understand the distinction between the purpose of life and the meaning of life.Michael Westover looked in the mirror one day and wondered what the point of it was. He had a successful career in health care, a stable family, and great friendships. Yet, he felt aimless. His life was full—meetings to further his career, hours of TV, activities with his children—but was it worthwhile? Westover wondered why countless people coasted through life as he had, feeling lost and disconnected, while others approached each day feeling worthy and valuable. He wanted answers. But also, He wanted to feel worthwhile. So, he embarked on a journey for insight. But Westover didn't just look to the modern era for clues to solve this question…he dug through centuries of research and set out on a philosophical passage to find connection and meaning. What he discovered significantly changed the way he lives his life! He learned that living a life that matters is simpler than we may imagine! And following five types of commitment that are research-proven to give life more meaning, we can all build a worthwhile life and avoid the cycle of distractions.Westover gives advice from being a good neighbor, human steward or even what to do when life becomes overwhelming. He discusses the value of belief in a higher source, spirituality, faith or religion and how those practices can tether and build a sense of belonging and community as well as foster positive individual ideals. He answers the question as to whether its better to have a happy life or a meaningful life and why and even what a meaningful life looks life as we grow older. He discusses the power of nature, the importance of leaving your comfort zone, how to break out of a slump and so much more! From beginning to end, Westover shares wisdom, philosophy, stories and cites sources that educate, inspire and enlighten us towards better understanding A Worthwhile Life!Michael Westover is a writer, speaker, health care industry executive and graduate of the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. Westover's website, www.echoesofmeaning.com, is a collection of more than 30 articles about human connection, including articles of family, business, religion, and self-improvement. Many of his pieces attempt to look at ancient truths from new angles to make them applicable to modern life. For people with disabilities, it can feel impossible to adapt and thrive when you're already set up for failure. But John Samuel was on a mission of discovery and enlightenment that is certain to empower everyone. His 30,000 mile journey against inevitable blindness and search for acceptance took him on travels around the world, to hiking mountains and finding love and raising a family, all highlighted in his amazing book, Don't Ask the Blind Guy for Directions: A 30,000-Mile Journey for Love, Confidence and a Sense of Belonging. This heartfelt memoir is an important call towards acceptance and a powerful resource for change for both professionals with disabilities and individuals working to create an inclusive culture at any organization. It empowers one to accept themselves and others, breaks down barriers, and rebuilds a world where everyone belongs.John Samuel is the CEO and cofounder of Ablr, a disability inclusion and accessibility business working to remove barriers that hinder people with disabilities from all aspects of life. In college, he was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa, a genetic and degenerative disease that caused him to lose his eyesight. After struggling to belong and succeed in the sighted world, John now empowers both individuals and organizations to overcome accessibility challenges and build more inclusive environments. In this Aging GreatFULLy power-hour, we welcome Stanford School of Medicine professor, physician, best-selling author, mindfulness expert, and innovator of the GAIN method, Greg Hammer, MD. Join us as Dr. Hammer shares wisdom to GAIN Keys to Nonjudgment and discover the life-enhancing rewards that begin to arise in your life. Most of us admirably strive to be “nonjudgmental” towards others. Coming from a place of nonjudgment allows us to see the best in others without letting our own biases get in the way. However, in order to become less judgmental, we need to change how we think about ourselves and the world around us. Dr. Hammer illustrates how we often make quick judgments every day about everything we see and put these things into categories, such as healthy/ unhealthy, affordable/ expensive, and good/ bad. And how much more often do we make judgments about ourselves?Discover the many benefits of nonjudgement, tips for implementing it into your life and learn how mindfulness, or living in the present moment, gives us the space to practice nonjudgment. First, we acknowledge how often we judge and that it is not necessary to judge. Then we can practice living in the present and accepting the world, ourselves, and others as they are. It's an enlightening hour from beginning to end as we learn about the benefits of nonjudgement, the problems that arise from judgement and realize how simple tactics of mindfulness can lead the way to a healthier and happier life.Greg Hammer, MD is a Professor at Stanford University School of Medicine, pediatric intensive care physician, pediatric anesthesiologist, mindfulness expert, and the author of GAIN without Pain: The Happiness Handbook for Health Care Professionals. A member of the Stanford WellMD initiative, Dr. Hammer is currently the Chair of the Physician Wellness Task Force for the California Society of Anesthesiologists. He has been a visiting professor and lecturer on wellness at institutions worldwide and teaches GAIN to medical students, residents, and fellows at Stanford. Dr. Hammer's clinical focus is in pediatric cardiac anesthesia and pediatric critical care medicine. His research is in developmental pharmacology and immunology, and he has an active laboratory with multiple ongoing studies in these areas. He has published widely on topics related to pharmacology and perioperative care of children undergoing cardiac and thoracic procedures as well as organ transplantation. Dr. Hammer is a health enthusiast and meditator, utilizing a non-duality and mindfulness-based approach, including the GAIN method. In this Aging GreatFuLLy power hour we welcome the invitation to bring our visions to reality and tap into our leadership abilities to create the future we aspire! With special guest, Reiner Lomb, Author of ASPIRE: Seven Essential Emotions for Leading Positive Change, No Matter Where You Are, we discover that each of us has special abilities and talents to inch us towards our aspirations and we're not checking our emotions at the door! Reiner is Founder of BoomerangCoach, an executive coaching firm specializing in leadership and career development, innovation and transformational change whose mission is to mobilize and develop leaders to create a more sustainable future for all. Reiner reminds us that we all have the capacity to lead towards positive change and shares how this is an important contributor to achieving what we want most out of life. Reiner believes emotions play a key role in creating change and shares a variety of ways the seven critical emotions help towards leadership roles as well as achieving goals, dreams and aspirations. It's a must-listen hour as we begin with asking listeners what they would do if a Genie magically showed up in their life! But if you couldn't answer that then, by the end of the hour, you'll have plenty of inspirational ideas to get you motivated towards your aspirations. We talk about changes as we grow older, feeling like we're no longer worthy or capable of change and even how we may feel challenged to define our dreams over and through the years. But there's a few key phrases in this episode that speak to everyone, “No Matter Where You Are” and “Resilience”. In this, we are reminded that while we may not know the answers or feel challenged to identify them, Aging Rebels always find a way. And that's another message in this episode, as Lomb feels “Your inspiration to create inspirational change may come from your dissatisfaction from the status quo, joyful anticipation of an aspirational new future, or a new insight. To create such a vision and bring it into reality requires an emotional shift from hopelessness to optimism and inspiration, which then can mobilize any group – from dozens to millions.” We spotlight purpose and passion as an important component throughout life and certainly as we grow older. And we acknowledge even when we may not have a voice like we once did, we may still be able to be heard through our emotional connections, delivered heart to heart. To connect with Reiner Lomb, learn more about his individual and group coaching, speaking, or buy his book, ASPIRE, or Boomerang Approach, Return to Purpose, Ignite Your Passion, visit him at www.ReinerLomb.com.Thank you, amazing Aging Rebels, for listening to the Aging GreatFULLy show! Listeners will appreciate the depth and tenderness this conversation offers as we welcome them into the light – and discuss so many important facets of grieving experiences we face in life – including why it is so important to grieve and how grieving has changed over the years. We expand on our last conversation furthering ways we can support others during their grieving journey and even defining our own terms of how we need to grieve. We talk about expectations of others when it comes to grief and even judgement regarding the grieving process and how we can educate others around us when we are in this place as to what we need for the grieving process. We acknowledge that while grief won't have an expiration date, we can begin the process of healing through light – recognizing our own illuminating from within and as our guest shares in her work and book, Light After Loss, through Light-Shift practices. We focus on a multitude of ways to make meaning out of loss, to celebrate our loved ones, especially during the holidays and special anniversary occasions when we might feel especially heartbroken in the depths of bereavement – to bring them closer to us and warm our heart and soul with love. Listeners will truly appreciate the wisdom-packed hour as we analyze grief from so many different perspectives in an effort to help everyone better understand it towards healing, hope and finding purpose to live in the light again following the loss of a loved one so dear. We discover it is through picking up the pieces of our broken heart a little at a time, while honoring our loved one along the way, somehow light finds its way in. Because love is light and it can slowly open the doorway to a new way of living again after loss. In this Aging GreatFULLy power-hour we begin a two-part series on an important topic most of us face at some point in our lives – coping with grief and being prepared for end-of-life. However, we begin the hour talking about some of your favorite TV shows, because on the Aging GreatFULLy show, we're never cookie cutter! But you'll soon understand why… as we do make our way to explore several kinds of grief, including the challenging emotions we may be left with after experiencing the loss of a loved one. Host Holley Kelley shares how we often end up replaying all those challenging post-death emotions of regret, resentment and remorse through what she calls our “Wouldas, Shouldas and Couldas” renderings. But this Ground Hog Day replay we subject ourselves to can also often prevent us from moving forward to live our best life and experiencing healthy grieving – good grief. In this Aging GreatFULLy power-hour we invite you to bask in the Fountain of YOU-th! That's right, come gather around for this conversation all about YOU, destressing, healthy, AGEless living and self-care strategies for your mind, body and soul with returning guest, one of the world's most noted beauty and wellness experts to the supermodels and superstars, Gregory Landsman. Gregory is a best-selling author of nine-books and the TV Host of Face Lifting Food – a show about how to use food to lower stress and maintain healthy, younger looking skin, shown in universities, wellness centers and in more than 70 countries worldwide. Join us for a conversation beyond beauty, as Gregory speaks to the essence of seeing one another with our heart. As he says, it's beyond the skin and not “hard work, but heart work”. The conversation flows effortlessly as only it can with Gregory Landsman because he is passionate about his work and believes that “How you age is in your hands.” You will LOVE his acronym for BEAUTY! We talk about the external messages we're receiving about growing older from the greater world from a variety of sources and how we may be internalizing them, including how they may be wearing us down. But we also discuss what we should “say back” to these messages once we acknowledge them. Gregory believes that Mother Nature has provided what we need to provide self-care and natural remedies for skin care. And his books highlight his processes beautifully as he shares how to reduce stress and skin stress naturally (one of the greatest causes of premature skin aging) to naturally age less while embracing every beautiful stAGE along life's way. But we also talk about the Fountain of YOU-th, in that Fountains spring forth life and vitality. Every fountain is beautiful and YOUnique. And we believe this to be true about every Aging Rebel. And the Fountain of Youth itself represented the great quest for youth. And as such, we love that Aging Rebels are dedicated to seizing and bubbling up their own child-like wonder in their curious and ongoing zest for life! And much like a fountain, Aging Rebels possess an enthusiastic approach to living, inspiring others through being great Role Models. Much like a fountain offers abundance, we also speak to the many special and important gifts and wisdom every listener has within them to share with the world around them at every stAGE! We focus on Gregory Landsman's best-selling trilogy, Face Fitness, Face Food and Face Value, a dynamic work he has created that provides readers with a solution to transform the health of their skin naturally as we take a deep dive into the challenges many encounter with their internal thoughts, perceptions and even fears about growing older – even from a very young age. As a sought-after expert who has worked in the beauty and fashion industry for over 30 years, Gregory has developed his own GL De-stress and AGE Less method. Based on ancient modalities that have been used for thousands of years, his techniques are proven, endorsed and science based. They have been used by the global beauty industry for years to teach models how to de-stress their bodies and skin. But Gregory believes everyone should have affordable access to this type of self-care. It's a special conversation about one of my favorite topics – YOU, Aging Rebels! You won't want to miss it! To learn more about Gregory Landsman, visit him at www.GregoryLandsman.com where you can connect with him and also access the free eBook shared on this show, purchase his books and more. His books are also available at your favorite book retailers and his book trilogy, Face Fitness, Face Value and Face Food is available on Amazon in paperback https://a.co/d/0HrCFPM and also available as an affordable eBook version.Thank you, amazing Aging Rebels, for listening to the Aging GreatFULLy show! Aanandha is the author of the just released book, Stroke of Gratitude: How to Find Truth, Love, and Happiness in Healing After Health Crisis. And he didn't just write the book, he lived the experience and continues to every single day. He joins us to share a story of inspiration. A Journey of Grit; Moments of despair and times of great challenge. He knows what it feels like look back upon a life that once was and realize it won't ever be the same again. Aanandha joins us to share his story of overcoming unbelievable adversity but most of all how he chose to take what had happened to him and manifest it for the greater good not only in his own life but for the world at large. In one moment, Aanandha Sharurajah was CEO of one of the largest wellness companies in Singapore. And in the next, his entire life was derailed by a life-threatening stroke. His life changed in an instant. And along with it, he found himself redefining what it meant to be happy and successful. He discovered that the loss of independence and identity can be as debilitating as the diagnosis itself. But he also learned that living an empowered life after a health crisis is possible—when you choose the path of self-discovery instead of self-pity. He shares how a positive mindset paves the way to emerge stronger after loss and the transformative power of strong relationships. His sage wisdom echoes clearly why it's important to heal from the heart, not just the mind. And he gives a simple blueprint to initiate the neuroplasticity of our brain by managing stress, enhancing movement and improving our diet – all valuable contributors to his personal journey of recovery. He also shares how alternative treatments, combined with therapy, made a significant impact towards his recovery. He believes he survived this life-threatening stroke for a reason – to help others avoid what he has endured and be a voice for humanity. And he is passionate about stroke education and prevention. He shares the importance of sleep, diet, stress management and much more as well as stroke statistics that Aging Rebels will find surprising. But you'll really appreciate some other special words of wisdom that I won't share here because we don't want it all to be a spoiler. In the end, this episode is a must-listen for everyone! But especially anyone who finds themselves challenged in life. And in particular, anyone who may be facing a health crisis who may need some inspirational hand-holding to carry them through the next steps. Aanandha definitely reminds us that life isn't about what happens to us, but how we handle what happens to us and furthermore, what we do with it once it does. It is a lesson on life and a life lesson on living like no other. A reflective power-hour certain to help us all Age more GreatFULLy! In this week's Aging GreatFULLy power-hour we explore simple yet bountiful ways to receive the most out of life in the present while preparing thoughtfully for what is to come – our inevitable future passing. Host Holley Kelley, a gerontologist, Fellow in Thanatology, and Founder of the Latter-Life Planning Institute, puts the spotlight on some of her professional work and discusses facets of her book, Sunrises and Sunsets: Final Affairs Forged with Flair, Finesse and FUNctionality, and shares the many ways planning can bring peace of mind and newfound passion-borne freedom to living extraordinary in the present. While Aging GreatFULLy often emphasizes innumerable ways Aging Rebels can center themselves in Best Life Now Practices, Kelley reminds listeners to make a habit of setting daily intentions alongside their smiles and gratitude practices. She focuses on things that one can do to live with peace and concord not only in the present, but so one can die with a clear conscious, regret free, as well as ensure those they leave behind can receive closure and live with resolution too, referencing her novel “Kick-the-Bucket-List”. She also discusses ways to ensure you're living everyday life, not just going through the motions, such as working that Bucket List emphasizing that each day is a gift and to be cherished and honored through our grand living!Kelley acknowledges that many people are challenged to know where to begin when it comes to basic planning and that it's easy to just "not think about it" or leave it to another day. Noting there's not day of the week called “someday” she gives a prod, elbow and on-air nudge for everyone who hasn't yet done so, to complete their advance directives and even reviews one on air, sharing what it entails to try to answer some of the questions many may have about doing so.From discussing changes as we age, to thoughts about personal items, funeral planning, memorials and your many wishes in general, including thoughts you'd like to leave behind with those you love, it's an important conversation for anyone who believes they may someday die. Life and Death Matters—Matter. And Kelley covers them A-Z in her book, Sunrises and Sunsets…well, actually, her acronym for covering them is CREATED PEACE, her innovative 12-Step process allowing everyone to plan through a soulful and enriching journey. Her process goes beyond the physical and technical and connects one spiritually, mentally and emotionally to truly discover and explore Life and Death Matters in a way that is gentle, compassionate and transformational. For those interested, Sunrises and Sunsets: Final Affairs Forged with Flair, Finesse and FUNctionality book is available on Amazon Prime, Barnes & Noble or you can ask for it at your local booksellers. Join us for an Aging GreatFULLy Old-Fashioned Christmas Storytime with Holley Kelley! Some traditions never grow old, and story time gatherings are certainly one of them, regardless of our age. You're invited to gather around the fireplace or snuggle up with your favorite blanket, beverage, family or pet and enjoy the timeless tradition of storytelling as host, Holley Kelley, shares some holiday stories she wrote just for listeners. Two are from last year's Christmastime episode—but that's the great thing about the holidays—the tradition of cherishing recycled stories told year after year. And we have a new narrative this year too, founded on truth that began long ago, around Christmastime. We hope you will enjoy all three special and unique pieces in this special holiday tribute hour. In the hustle and bustle and demands of life, especially this time of year, we hope you will find some joy and lose yourself in the creative imaginings of storytelling. These stories are about family, love, forgiveness and never giving up on your dreams. They remind us of the true meaning of Christmastime and how important it is to carry forth the essence of all it encompasses, year-round. The messages in these stories also bring forth the unwavering significance of unconditional love, what it means to belong, how you're never too old, it's never too late, and how family… is well… family—sometimes blood related, and sometimes it's who we call “our people.”Whether you celebrate special holidays or not, we hope every listener enjoys the messages woven within these storylines. Refurbishing Life After Loss with Gerontologist Holley Kelley: Being in the amazing grace of life means that we will also experience loss. This show discusses this all-true reality of this part of our journey. We discuss how planning for our own future passing is so very important for inspiring your grand new beginning and a loving gift to those you love and the importance of living a regret-free life of appreciation. We also talk about the challenging stages of grief and that all loss are not people. And how animals grieve too. And that all losses are not human—we experience many kinds of losses in our lives. But what we do discover is that losses can serve as opportunities for growth if we give ourselves the chance to be a student of life, in all of life’s hard encounters. The psychological term for positive transformation following survival of a traumatic event is called post-traumatic growth. And this can be an opportunity to discover the most about ourselves, including new possibilities following suffering—and rediscovering ourselves and life again too. I call experiencing a personal metamorphous… because we are never the same. Because a loss is just that. We have endured incredible loss. We are forever different… thus I named this show “Refurbishing” life after loss, because the definition of refurbishing is “renovation.” We cannot be “restored” to who we were, we must “renovate,” and redecorate. And walking with extreme grief means sometimes we may feel the need to even resuscitate ourselves and eventually reconstruct our way to a life we really love again. And occasionally we need to give ourselves permissions to do so. There is life after loss. One day at a time, and through practical and positive processes, support, time, dedication, and beautiful honoring, cherishing, remembering and holding those we love close, including ourselves, everyone can find their way into loving and refurbishing life after loss.

Yep, we’re all aging! And some of us are enjoying this adventure with our parents! The ups and downs and even the unexpected! What a gift and opportunity! Enjoy this not-so-ordinary discussion about this not so predictable undertaking! Because we’re living longer there can be as many as four or five generations together in a single family. As exciting as all of this sounds, the reality exists that aging can bring challenges to the family dynamic. What types of things should we contemplate as we think about growing older? What concerns should we have about our parents? What do they expect from us? Where is the give and take? What kinds of situations can arise? Have you ever thought about it? Well there’s a few common ones I’ve encountered professionally worth discussing in today’s Aging GreatFULLy show as I impart some of my thoughts regarding key components of Aging with Aging Parents from a personal and candid point of view. This show is a tiny glimpse into some of my Aging Rebel perspectives that I’m passionate about regarding aging, life, and circumstances that may arise, including important qualities that help beautifully usher the journey into a more fulfilling and rewarding experience for everyone. I also reveal it isn’t always easy, we don’t always have all the answers, but there are some things that should remain constant, regardless!

CREATED PEACE is Holley's unique and novel approach to advance care or final affairs planning. This is what Holley feels is everyone's personal and important area of responsible planning. In this show she gives you a gentle nudge as she guides you through her unique process of planning that has changed people's lives around the globe. This is a great show for those not sure about moving forward with planning or wondering what is involved in the planning process by the Sunrises and Sunsets author and Aging GreatFULLy show host herself.
