This icon was once kept in the Church of Blachernae in Constantinople. In 1383, it suddenly appeared in the sky over Lake Ladoga, then travelled through the air to the city of Tikhvin, where it alit by the River Tikhvina. A monastery was built there to house it. In the twentieth century it was brought to America. Innumerable miracles have been worked through this wonderworking icon, especially healings of children.   On this day is also commemorated the Hodigritia Icon of the Mother of God. According to many accounts, this icon and the Tikhvin Icon are one and the same, so we list them together. Hodigritia is translated "Directress" or more literally "She who shows the way." It was painted by Luke the Evangelist himself, who knew the Mother of God in the flesh. Over the years the icon was taken from Antioch to Jerusalem, then to Constantinople where it was enshrined in the Church of Blachernae. When Constantinople was attacked at the same time by the Persians and the Scythians, Patriarch Sergius carried the holy icon around the ramparts, and the city was miraculously delivered from its pagan enemies. During the iconoclast period, the icon was hidden in a wall in the monastery of the Pantocrator.

Of Korach's 253 collaborators, only three are named, and all three are Reubenites: Dathan, Abiram, and On Ben Peles. Dathan and Abiram remain true to Korach's cause until the very end when they and their families are swallowed alive by the miraculous sinkhole. On Ben Peles was spared thanks to his wife's wise intervention. In this very interesting podcast we trace the decision of the Reubenites to join the rebellion back to their progenitor Reuben, and learn the valuable tactic to avoid doom advocated by Jacob in his deathbed blessing to his eldest son. The lessons are valuable and instructive to Reubenintes and non-Reubenites alike. – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –DONATE: Please consider supporting the podcasts by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php. The history of God's people continues with the reign of Amaziah in Judah and Jeroboam II in Israel. When Amaziah secures the throne in Judah, he follows the LORD's Word in dealing with the conspiracy that ended his father's life. As Amaziah finds some military success during his reign, he foolishly picks a fight with the king of Israel, and the king of Israel takes Amaziah captive and plunders Jerusalem. During these days in Israel, Jeroboam II is given success in expanding the borders of Israel, even as he continues in the idolatry of Jeroboam son of Nebat.   Rev. Chris Matthis, pastor at Epiphany Lutheran Church in Castle Rock, CO, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study 2 Kings 14:1-29.  To learn more about Epiphany, visit www.epiphanylc.org. "A Kingdom Divided” is a series on Sharper Iron that goes through 1-2 Kings. The division in the kingdom of Israel in this part of history was greater than a matter of north and south. The biggest division was between the people and their God. Yet even as the people rebelled against the LORD as their King, still He remained faithful to call them back to Himself through His prophets, working through history to send the good and gracious King, Jesus Christ. Sharper Iron, hosted by Rev. Timothy Appel, looks at the text of Holy Scripture both in its broad context and its narrow detail, all for the sake of proclaiming Christ crucified and risen for sinners. Two pastors engage with God's Word to sharpen not only their own faith and knowledge, but the faith and knowledge of all who listen. Submit comments or questions to: listener@kfuo.org

Galatians 2:1-7a, 8b, 10 - [Paul wrote:] “Then after fourteen years I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, taking Titus along with me. I went up because of a revelation and set before them (though privately before those who seemed influential) the Gospel that I proclaim among the Gentiles, in order to make sure I was not running or had not run in vain. But even Titus, who was with me, was not forced to be circumcised, though he was a Greek. Yet because of false brothers secretly brought in—who slipped in to spy out our freedom that we have in Christ Jesus, so that they might bring us into slavery to them we did not yield in submission even for a moment, so that the truth of the Gospel might be preserved for you. And from those who seemed to be influential (what they were makes no difference to me; God shows no partiality)—those, I say, who seemed influential added nothing to me. On the contrary, when they saw that I had been entrusted with the Gospel … to the Gentiles … and when James and Cephas and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given to me, they gave the right hand of fellowship to Barnabas and me, that we should go to the Gentiles and they to the [Jews]. Only, they asked us to remember the poor, the very thing I was eager to do.”

Full Text of ReadingsWednesday of the Twelfth Week in Ordinary Time Lectionary: 373The Saint of the day is Blessed Jutta of ThuringiaBlessed Jutta of Thuringia's Story Today's patroness of Prussia began her life amidst luxury and power but died the death of a simple servant of the poor. In truth, virtue and piety were always of prime importance to Jutta and her husband, both of noble rank. The two were set to make a pilgrimage together to the holy places in Jerusalem, but her husband died on the way. The newly widowed Jutta, after taking care to provide for her children, resolved to live in a manner she felt was utterly pleasing to God. She disposed of the costly clothes, jewels, and furniture befitting one of her rank, and became a Secular Franciscan, taking on the simple garment of a religious. From that point her life was utterly devoted to others: caring for the sick, particularly lepers; tending to the poor, whom she visited in their hovels; helping the crippled and blind with whom she shared her own home. Many of the townspeople of Thuringia laughed at how the once-distinguished lady now spent all her time. But Jutta saw the face of God in the poor and felt honored to render whatever services she could. About the year 1260, not long before her death, Jutta lived near the non-Christians in eastern Germany. There she built a small hermitage and prayed unceasingly for their conversion. She has been venerated for centuries as the special patron of Prussia. Reflection Jesus once said that a camel can pass through a needle's eye more easily than a rich person can enter God's realm. That's pretty scary news for us. We may not have great fortunes, but we who live in the West enjoy a share of the world's goods that people in the rest of the world cannot imagine. Much to the amusement of her neighbors, Jutta disposed of her wealth after her husband's death and devoted her life to caring for those who had no means. Should we follow her example, people will probably laugh at us, too. But God will smile. Blessed Jutta of Thuringia is the Patron Saint of: Prussia Saint of the Day, Copyright Franciscan Media

Send us a textBut the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.  Galatians 5:22-23You can't Learn  fruit. Fruit is the Byproduct of who we are. On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”   “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?”  He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind'; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.'” “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.” But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”  In reply Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead.  A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side.In the same way a Levite also came there, went over and looked at the man, and then walked on by on the other side. “Then a despised Samaritan came along, and when he saw the man, he felt compassion for him. Luke 10:25-33I can Keep My Distance I can be Curious but Uncaring  I can Show Kindness 1.   I must see The Needs of people around me.“Then a despised Samaritan came along, and when he saw the man, he felt compassion for him. Luke 10:332.  I must sympathize With their Pain. Then a despised Samaritan came along, and when he saw the man, he felt compassion for him. Luke 10:33Stop asking: What's wrong with them?Ask: What  Happened to them? 3.  I must seize the Moment to help. Going over to him, the Samaritan soothed his wounds with olive oil and wine and bandaged them. Luke 10:34I must be willing to Be Interrupted. I have to be willing to Face my fears. 4.  I must spend whatever it takes. Then he put the man on his own donkey and took him to an inn, where he took care of him.  The next day he handed the innkeeper two silver coins, telling him, ‘Take care of this man. If his bill runs higher than this, I'll pay you the next time I'm here.' “What do you think? Which of the three became a neighbor to the man attacked by robbers?” “The one who treated him kindly,” the religion scholar responded. Jesus said, “Go and do the same.” Luke 10:36-37Being kind to the people in need is like lending to the Lord, and He will repay you for the kindness you have shown. Listen to the Message from Sunday, June 22, 2025 Honor's Reward: How Doors of Blessing Open   Summary of "Power of the Lord Always Present" b Luke 5:17, Now it happened on a certain day, as He was teaching, that there were Pharisees and teachers of the law sitting by, who had come out of every town of Galilee, Judea, and Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was present to heal them. 18 Then behold, men brought on a bed a man who was paralyzed, whom they sought to bring in and lay before Him. 19 And when they could not find how they might bring him in, because of the crowd, they went up on the housetop and let him down with his bed through the tiling into the midst before Jesus. 20 When He saw their faith, He said to him, “Man, your sins are forgiven you" This message highlights the truth that God's power is always present wherever His presence is. Drawing from Luke 5:17, where Jesus taught among Pharisees and religious leaders, the Scripture notes, “the power of the Lord was present to heal them.” However, healing didn't happen automatically—it required faith and action. The story of the paralyzed man lowered through the roof by his friends shows how persistent, active faith can tap into God's healing power. Jesus responded not to passivity, but to visible faith. He forgave the man's sins, resulting in both spiritual and physical healing, demonstrating that healing of the soul and body are often connected. Key takeaways: The Lord's power is always available when He is present. That power must be activated by faith. Faith requires action—not just belief, but effort and persistence. Jesus doesn't always “pray” for healing; sometimes He simply declares wholeness. Let your actions reflect faith, as “faith without works is dead” (James). The message ends by encouraging listeners to keep this truth in mind daily and to check out the related message, “Honor's Reward: How Doors of Blessing Open.”

Understanding the conflict between Israel and Iran requires us to look at it from a biblical perspective—not a geopolitical one. In this sermon, Pastor Allen Jackson discusses the current struggle between Israel and Iran, and what the Bible has to say about it. He offers insight on the history of the Middle East and the nation of Israel, illuminating the pattern of antisemitism we've watched for millennia. He also shares how we can respond to God shaking the earth. God will keep His covenant with His chosen people, and as Christ-followers, we need a deeper level of understanding of the significance of Israel and the Jewish people. God promises to bless those who bless Israel, so let's continue to pray for the peace of Jerusalem.   To support this ministry and help us continue to reach people all around the world, visit this link: allenjackson.com/podcastdonate

Acts 15:1, 2b-4a, 5-12 - [After many Gentiles came to faith in Jesus,] some men came down from Judea and were teaching the brothers, “Unless you are circumcised according to the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved.” And … Paul and Barnabas and some of the others were appointed to go up to Jerusalem to the apostles and the elders about this question. So, being sent on their way by the church, they passed through both Phoenicia and Samaria, describing in detail the conversion of the Gentiles, and brought great joy to all the brothers. When they came to Jerusalem, they were welcomed … But some believers who belonged to the party of the Pharisees rose up and said, “It is necessary to circumcise them and to order them to keep the law of Moses.” The apostles and the elders were gathered together to consider this matter. And after there had been much debate, Peter stood up and said to them, “Brothers, you know that in the early days God made a choice among you, that by my mouth the Gentiles should hear the word of the Gospel and believe. And God, who knows the heart, bore witness to them, by giving them the Holy Spirit just as He did to us, and He made no distinction between us and them, having cleansed their hearts by faith. Now, therefore, why are you putting God to the test by placing a yoke on the neck of the disciples that neither our fathers nor we have been able to bear? But we believe that we will be saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, just as they will.” And all the assembly fell silent, and they listened to Barnabas and Paul as they related what signs and wonders God had done through them among the Gentiles.

With insights from historical scriptures and contemporary news, we distinguish between fact and fiction, equipping believers with the truth about what is unfolding on the world stage. In addition to exclusive clips, including a discussion featuring Charlie Kirk and Pastor Jack Hibbs, the podcast scrutinizes mainstream interpretations and suggests alternative perspectives on key prophetic events such as the Gog and Magog war. Whether you're a longstanding listener or tuning in for the first time, prepare to gain a deeper understanding of one of the most significant periods in our spiritual timeline. As always, we encourage our audience to engage critically, challenge prevailing narratives, and deepen their own quest for truth and understanding.        Rest, after a long busy day, or a very long journey is a wonderful thing, isn’t it? It’s amazing how God has designed our bodies, minds and hearts to recover with REST each in their own way, isn’t it? In part, that’s what a weekly Sabbath is all about, and have you found yourself caught in the over-stressed life without a Sabbath rest?   Let’s rejoin Ezra and his large caravan who finally arrived safely in Jerusalem after their 4-month walking journey from Babylon. 4 months in the hot, dry middle east climate, walking with about 1500 other people and all the carts with their belongings and even animals, can you imagine? Ezra simply says this: “So we arrived in Jerusalem where we rested for three days.” (Ezra 8:32) Oh my, can you imagine how welcome and refreshing this 3-day rest was for these weary travelers? (Click here to see full text, images and links)    Pastor Doug Anderson    “Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, with our eyes fixed on Jesus…” (Heb. 12:1,2)Have a comment or question about today's chapter? I'm ready to hear from you, contact me here. Being in a state of gratitude paves the way to experiencing joy and fostering a deep connection with Hashem.  While it is so simple to achieve, it is so easy to forget, as the Yetzer Hara wants us to focus our attention on what we feel we are lacking.   In this episode I share an experience that I like to reflect on regularly as it cemented into my mind the importance of being in a constant state of gratitude to our Creator.

Is Iran's Nuclear Program Damaged or Destroyed?

When we last recorded Saturday night, the U.S. had just announced its strike on Iran's nuclear facilities. The U.S. had entered the war. The restrainers had seemingly lost. In the following hours, President Donald Trump said the mission was a “spectacular military success.” And Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the program “obliterated” Iran's nuclear sites.  But there's much more to that story than meets the eye. As Jay Solomon wrote in our pages: Before the U.S. struck, 16 cargo trucks entered the fortified mountain complex and moved unidentified equipment to another location. Are the sites destroyed or merely damaged? Was enriched uranium smuggled out? It all remains unclear. Now the war is heating up. Israel has expanded its bombing campaign beyond nuclear facilities to hit regime targets. Qatar has closed its airspace. And just as we write this, Iran has reportedly fired toward Qatar and Iraq. It all begs the question: Was the strike on Iran's Fordow Fuel Enrichment Plant the end of this war—or just the beginning? And what comes next? To understand the state of the nuclear facilities and the state of the war, we've brought together three of the most well-read experts: Michael Oren, Jay Solomon, and Matti Friedman. Oren is the former Israeli ambassador to the U.S. He served from 2009 to 2013. He is also a former Knesset member. He is the author of many books, including Ally: My Journey Across the American-Israeli Divide. Solomon is an investigative journalist who has covered Iran and the region for decades. He just published an explosive piece for The Free Press titled “Did Iran Just Sneak Out Critical Nuclear Material from Fordow?” And, Friedman is our Jerusalem-based columnist, and the author of four books, including his latest, Who by Fire: Leonard Cohen in the Sinai. He just wrote  “After the Bombs: American B-2s Just Changed the Middle East. Now It's Time to Return the Region to the Humans Who Live Here” for our pages. We'll note we recorded this Monday morning, starting around 11 a.m. ET, as a Free Press Live event. To join these, you just need to do one thing—and that's become a Free Press subscriber. Matthew presents Jesus Christ as the Jesus as the Mashiach Nagid, the Messiah the King, the Lion of the tribe of Judah. It was written by a Jew, to Jews, about a Jew. This book of the Bible uses more Old Testament quotes than any other. The Gospel of Matthew emphasizes the saying of Jesus, including ten parables not found in any other Gospel. After first establishing the royal genealogy, he then goes on to focus on the fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecies. Matthew uses the term "fulfilled" 82 times! Many scholars now believe that the Gospel was written before Paul's first imprisonment of 57-60 A.D., and that virtually all of the New Testament books were written before Jerusalem's destruction. Hope for Right Now: A Walking with Purpose Podcast

Join Lisa and Laura for the final episode in our series Names of God. In biblical times, names were of great importance—they conveyed a person's essence, history, nature, or character. As we explore the various names of God in the Old Testament, we gain insight into His character. With each name, we will learn a new attribute, deepening our understanding of and growing closer to God. In today's episode, we explore our seventh name, Jehovah Jireh—my provider. The word for provide, “jireh," in the Old Testament, means to see. When God sees, He foresees. Our all-knowing, ever-present, eternal Father knows the end from the beginning and so in His omniscience, He provides. But what about when God asks us to do things that don't make sense? When what is happening looks like the opposite of His provision—a contradiction to what He promised? This is what today's episode is about, and you do not want to miss it. Open your Heart to our key Scripture. Genesis 22:1–19 Open your Bible to other Scriptures referenced in this episode. Hebrews 11:19: He considered that God was able to raise men even from the dead. 2 Chronicles 3:1: Then Solomon began to build the house of the Lord in Jerusalem on Mount Moriah, where the Lord had appeared to his father David, at the place that David had prepared, on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite. Hebrews 10:4–5: For since it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins … but a body you have prepared for me. Genesis 22:3: So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and his son Isaac; and he cut the wood for the place of which God had told him. Genesis 39:23: The Lord was with him and whatever he did, the Lord made it prosper. Hebrews 11:8–22 John 16:33: I have said this to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world. Invite Him in with this episode's questions for reflection. Are you willing to let go? Are you willing to trust God completely, even with your Isaac? What is your Isaac? Bonus question: What can you do to avoid defining God based only on His gifts to you? Show mentions. Jesus says, “follow me,” and we, just like the people in this text, respond with, “I will follow you wherever you go.” But. Let me go and bury my father. Let me first say farewell to those at my home. My kid has another tournament this Sunday. I can't afford to give to the church this month. I can't bring up religion to my family, I wouldn't know what to say. We all say we follow Jesus, but we have a lot of “buts.” Sarah Stenson is here to teach us that this text is holding the mirror up to our idols, and replacing them with Jesus' promise. CARE OF SOULS - ADDICTIONIn Care of Souls, a special mini-series podcast from Luther House of Study, Lutheran pastors and theologians come together to explore the deeply personal and pastoral task of preaching to and caring for those struggling with life's challenging situations: addiction, death, family disharmony, and more. Rooted in the theology of the cross and the Lutheran tradition of radical grace, this series offers both theological depth and practical guidance for pastors, church workers, and lay leaders. With conversations, real-life stories, and reflections from the front lines of ministry, Care of Souls equips listeners to enter the broken places of addiction not with easy answers, but with the crucified and risen Christ. Because in the end, it's not about fixing people—it's about preaching the Gospel. Listen to Care of Souls wherever you listen to podcasts or on the Luther House website: Care of Souls - Addiction SING TO THE LORD Martin Luther said, "Next to the word of God, the art of music is the greatest treasure in the world." To understand the importance of hymnody in the Lutheran church, Lars Olson and Mason Van Essen sit down with Zachary Brockhoff to discuss the lectionary's hymns, their meaning and history, and how the music preaches the Gospel.

Were you aware that Psalms 120-134 were sung by groups of Jewish worshipers on their way up to Jerusalem for the High Holy Days? In fact, your bible likely subtitles each of them ‘A Song of Ascents'. It is believed that Jewish worshipers would travel in groups, families and sometimes entire villages, singing these Psalms along the way of the Holy City. But even more interesting, these 15 songs span the entire Christian journey from salvation to glorification passing through the ups and downs of sanctification. They take us from the valley of repentance, to the heights of Christian joy. Step by step, we are urged onward and upward in these Songs of Ascents, learning endurance in the face of constant opposition. What we need is a guide and a friend to help us along the way. Both of them will be found in these fifteen Psalms. Come along as we climb the hill together, onward and upward to our eternal joy!
