How did Clio Snacks evolve from a homemade Greek yogurt bar created in a New Jersey garage into a national brand generating $90 million in annual sales? In this episode, company CEO John McGuckin shares the strategic blueprint behind the brand's explosive growth, from prototype to distribution in nearly every major grocery and mass retail chain across the U.S. On location at Clio's 80,000-square-foot facility in New Jersey, John dives into how the brand is riding the wave of health-conscious snacking trends. He discusses the complexities of managing a vertically integrated business, where Clio controls both manufacturing and marketing, and how that structure has been key to their agility and innovation. John also highlights the critical role of transparency and emotional investment from Clio's board in driving the brand's remarkable rise. Show notes: 0:25: Interview: John McGuckin, CEO, Clio Snacks – Ray details a behind-the-scenes tour of the Clio bar production process, highlighting its proprietary methods and high-quality ingredients. John shares how Clio evolved from founder Sergey Kowsky's homemade snack for his kids, inspired by traditional Eastern European cheesecake bars. He discusses Clio's growth – $90 million expected for 2025, from $28 million four years ago - is fueled by widespread consumer loyalty, strong repeat purchases, expanded distribution, including a jump from 250 to 1,200 Target stores. He emphasizes the importance of consistent manufacturing, supported by a vertically integrated model and a highly experienced leadership team and how the brand leverages sales and operations planning (SNOP) to manage demand forecasting. John highlights a HelloFresh campaign that distributed 500,000 bars and talks about how innovation remains central to Clio's strategy, with plans to reintroduce its parfait line, enhance protein content, and explore kid-friendly options. John also credits Clio's board, which includes early supporter and investor John Bush, with enabling the company's agility, transparency, and long-term vision. On this week's episode of Everyday Injustice, host David Greenwald sits down with Adam Clausen, director of Innovation and Social Impact, whose life story embodies both the failures and possibilities of the American justice system. Once sentenced to 213 years in federal prison, Clausen not only found a way to survive the impossible but has since emerged as a national leader advocating for reform and second chances. Clausen's journey began with a troubled adolescence in New Jersey, marked by probation at 11 and escalating encounters with the justice system. By 18, he was a standout athlete with scholarship offers, but his life unraveled into crime and drug use, ultimately leading to lengthy incarceration. When federal prosecutors stacked mandatory firearm charges against him, he was handed a sentence that amounted to multiple lifetimes. Rather than allow despair to consume him, Clausen chose optimism, discipline, and eventually transformation. During more than two decades in prison, Clausen poured his energy into fitness, introspection, and building community. With the support of forward-thinking administrators, he helped establish the nation's first program of incarcerated life coaches, turning prison into a space for growth and preparation for life beyond the walls. That work laid the foundation for his role today in Social Purpose Corrections, where he collaborates with leaders to reshape correctional culture, promote wellness, and ensure that people leave prison better prepared than when they entered. Now free through compassionate release after the First Step Act opened a legal path, Clausen is dedicated to using his story to inspire change. He works alongside national organizations, testifies before policymakers, and continues to press for reforms that recognize dignity, opportunity, and accountability. His conversation with Everyday Injustice is a powerful reminder that behind every sentence, no matter how long, is a human being capable of redemption—and that a justice system focused on restoration can serve both individuals and society far better than one built on punishment alone.

In September of 1922, scandal rocked the quiet town of New Brunswick, New Jersey. A beloved minister and a choir singer were found posed side by side beneath a crab apple tree, their love letters torn and scattered like confetti. What might have looked like a tragic romance gone wrong quickly spiraled into one of the most sensational murder cases of the Jazz Age. At the center of it all? A wealthy wife, her eccentric butterfly-collecting brother, and a witness the press only ever called the Pig Woman. Yes, really. Thank you to this week's sponsors! This Labor Day fuel prices are now lower than 2020. The battle has begun and Trump made the first move in firing Lisa Cook, this will determine who will have the control over the creation of currency. The [DS] have been planning a major [FF] before the midterms, they cannot allow Trump win. Trump knows the playbook and is dismantling many of the pieces to the [FF] to limit what the [DS] has planned. Trump is building the narrative that he will be going into Chicago next. Trump messaged the people that everything is being put into place to win the midterms. Stage has now been set. Economy Governor Murphy's Green New Deal Exacerbates NJ Energy Crisis New Jerseyans are feeling the pain of higher electricity bills. They should blame Governor Phil Murphy and the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU) for inviting this energy crisis. The BPU was slated to approve a 20% rate hike in June, but delayed the rate hike until September 30. On August 14, the BPU announced a $100 Residential Universal Bill Credit to help lower bills in September and October. This is a way to use taxes to disguise the cost of utility bills, but New Jerseyans are still shouldering these costs. When announcing this relief measure, Governor Murphy didn't accept responsibility for higher prices. Instead, he blamed PJM Interconnection, a grid operator servicing New Jersey and 12 other states, for creating a “cost crisis.” Earlier this summer, he urged residents to set their air conditioners to 76-78 degrees Fahrenheit and delay appliance usage until 8 p.m. But Garden Staters aren't buying what Murphy is selling. Since Governor Murphy entered office in 2017, six power plants—including five coal plants and Oyster Creek nuclear reactor—were shut down. This represents a loss of 2,500 megawatts (MW) of net capacity. As a result, the state consumes more energy than it produces. It imported 20% of its electricity from out-of-state power generators—namely, Pennsylvania. Imported electricity is more expensive due to higher fuel and transmission costs. One analysis found NJ's green “transition” “has outpaced its replacement infrastructure, raising concerns about grid stability, cost volatility, and energy independence.” Yet, there is no transition occurring. Natural gas and nuclear have cumulatively supplied over 90% of the state's net electricity generation since 2011. Renewables, including solar, barely supply 8%. But don't take my word for it. States with clean energy mandates—including renewable standard portfolios (RPS) that mandate electric utilities set renewable energy targets—generally have higher electricity costs compared to states without them. As of this writing, New Jersey electricity rates are the 12th most expensive in the nation, averaging 20.49¢ per kilowatt-hour (kWh). That's 17.3% higher than the national average (17.47¢ per kWh). For context, the average American household uses about 10,800 kWh annually. Devoted Know Your Enemy listeners will recall that, in November 2021, we released a fairly dense, theory-driven episode on Frank Meyer, the Communist from New Jersey whose exploits on behalf of the Party in the UK got him kicked out of the country and back to the United States, where he eventually turned right and became a key figure in the post-war U.S. conservative movement, both as an editor at National Review and an architect of institutions like the American Conservative Union, Young Americans for Freedom, and the Conservative Party of New York. Of course, we had more to say about Meyer, and we're devoting another episode to him, this time focused on the details of his incredible life, thanks to the publication of an extraordinary new biography of Meyer, Daniel J. Flynn's The Man Who Invented Conservatism: The Unlikely Life of Frank S. Meyer. Flynn discovered a trove of never-before-seen papers of Meyer's that range from personal documents (tax returns, Christmas cards from Joan Didion, his dance card from college) to his correspondence with nearly every conservative writer and intellectual of note in the 1950s and 60s. Armed with these files, Flynn offers a vivid portrait of a brilliant, eccentric political life and mind.Listen again: "Frank Meyer: Father of Fusionism" (November 10, 2021)Sources:Daniel J.
