There was a time in American public life when “the news” was a nightly ritual, a 30-minute glimpse into the wider-world, a way to stay informed. But Dr. Alice E. Marwick says that world is long gone, washed away in recent years with failing traditional news outlets and the rise of social media influencers. Marwick is the director of research at Data & Society. She is a qualitative social scientist who researches the social, political, and cultural implications of popular social media technologies. Her most recent book, “The Private is Political: Networked Privacy on Social Media,” examines how the networked nature of online privacy disproportionately impacts members of marginalized communities. Marwick has several other publications in the realm of communications and mass media. She is currently writing her third book on online radicalization, supported by an Andrew Carnegie fellowship. Marwick was previously associate professor of communication and principal researcher and co-founder of the Center for Information, Technology, and Public Life at the University of North Carolina. She was also Microsoft visiting professor at the Center for Information Technology Policy at Princeton University. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Welcome to episode #930 of Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast. Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast - Episode #930. I've known Juliette Powell since she was a famed VJ on MusiquePlus - MuchMusic and I was a music journalist back in the mid-ninties. While we lost touch over the years, we reconnected when she published her book about social media in 2008, 33 Million People in the Room - How to Create, Influence, and Run a Successful Business with Social Networking, and more recently with her latest, The AI Dilemma - 7 Principles for Responsible Technology (co-authored with Art Kleiner). The balance between innovation and ethics with artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly crucial. Juliette, a seasoned consultant at the intersection of technology and business (wit her consultancy, KPI), addresses this challenge head-on in The AI Dilemma. The book is a roadmap for businesses and governments looking to harness AI's potential responsibly. Juliette delves into the pressing issues surrounding AI deployment and the imperative of upholding ethical standards. With her extensive background consulting for multinational companies and her research at Columbia University, Juliette brings a wealth of knowledge and a unique perspective to the AI discourse. She explores the dual nature of AI - its capacity to drive unprecedented progress and its potential to perpetuate harm. She articulates the seven principles outlined in her book, which serve as guidelines for developing AI systems that support human flourishing while minimizing risks. These principles focus on rigorous risk assessment, transparency, data protection, bias reduction, accountability, organizational flexibility, and fostering an environment of psychological safety and creative friction. Juliette's insights are informed by real-world examples and her collaborations with institutions like Intel Labs and governmental bodies, which underscore the complexity of AI's impact across various sectors. Our discussion also touches on the broader social implications of AI, including the challenges posed by data ownership, the illusion of personalized experiences, and the global divide in data value. Juliette addresses the confusion surrounding the term 'AI' and the critical need for digital literacy to navigate its consequences effectively. We all know that AI presents significant challenges but it also offers remarkable opportunities for those willing to engage with it thoughtfully and ethically. Enjoy the conversation... Data ownership and the responsible deployment of AI are crucial considerations. Government regulation and international cooperation are necessary to address the challenges of AI. The term 'AI' is often misused and misunderstood, leading to confusion in the marketplace. The development and deployment of AI should be driven by ethical considerations and a risk-benefit analysis. Youtube Version https://youtu.be/8xoFM0GvgDc https://fairplaypuzzles.com 150+ puzzles 90 brands That's how many puzzles I have enjoyed putting together. I discovered a great love of puzzles during an extremely challenging time in my life. In March 2021, I was severely injured in a car accident and had to take a break from my Certified Midwife position in the Bronx, where I have cared for underserved women for the last 23 years. I started putting together puzzles to fill the time after being left immobilized for months and to take my mind off my pain and concerns about my recovery. Fairplay Puzzles is committed to carrying a wide selection of puzzle brands dedicated to representing and celebrating diversity, equity, and inclusion. We embrace these core values in all aspects of our business, from the brands we sell to the people we choose to do business with and the charitable causes we support. Our puzzle brands reflect these core values, and we have a special place in our hearts for start-up MWBE brands and artists sharing life and cultural representations from their experiences and perspectives. Aesthetic Vibe and Fun Factor Puzzle art plays a big part in the puzzle selection and diversity of genres when Helana chooses puzzles for the shop. Each puzzle chosen is a vibrant and beautiful work of art that is fun to do, and represents the richness of our diversity of cultures, experiences, perspectives, and beliefs—storytelling through puzzles. More and more people are moving cities. This hasn't always been the case. Historically, we were born in an area, raised in an area, raised a family in that area, and then retired in that area. But this has gotten much different in the modern travel era. Spirit Airlines will give you a ticket for less than what a date night at a steakhouse will cost. Corporations are moving employees from one big city to the other. Tiktok and Instagram solo travelers are inspiring others to pull the plug and grab their carry-on. This conversation is about building community after a move - because more than likely, you'll make a move. I speak with Haley Ingersoll, the founder of Pittsburgh Social Health and a community manager by trade. Haley and I have similar stories, moving from one city to the next and then being tasked with finding friends, missing our old ones, and then figuring out to meet people. She built Pittsburgh Social Health which allows transplants who are either returning to Pittsburgh or fresh to Pittsburgh to find community and build much needed social support. Things you can expect to hear are: innovative strategies and heartfelt efforts to knit the fabric of a supportive communitythe power of local eventsthe role of digital platforms in fostering connectionsthe importance of embracing cultural diversityhow to leverage personal experiences to drive community initiativesthe significance of understanding local cultureand how small actions like neighborhood walks can lead to profound social engagement.Connect with Haley: https://twitter.com/Hingersoll5https://www.linkedin.com/in/haley-ingersoll7/Learn about Pittsburgh Social Health:https://www.instagram.com/pghsocialhealth/Listen to her podcast:https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/heirloomsA quick note - moving is hard. And we often underestimate how much value the people have in our life that we're moving away from. Make sure to put in as much work as you can before you move, researching the area, finding things you could go to, and then making a plan. Also - ask your current network if they know anyone where you're moving and then see if you can get a warm hand-off. Doing these things will help set you up much better than going blind. And I strongly encourage you do these things! An easy way to send me a message? Click the link here.Have you enjoyed the podcast? Aaron Balick is a psychotherapist, speaker, consultant, educator, and author of The Psychodynamics of Social Networking. Social media invites snap emotional reactions, muddling clear thinking and escalating global tensions. It feeds on our anger, oversimplifying complex problems which blocks our ability to empathize. Nuanced explanations are demonized as if seeking to understand was an affront. If we learn to pause and reflect, we can overcome social media's divisive influence and discover middle-ground solutions in both personal and world affairs.
