A conversation involving such dramatic shifts in the brand requires as much nuance as we can gather! Summoned to the realm of the Dukes are none other than Last Stand Media's own Gene Park and Rick Hoeg to help us sift through the fallout of last week's Xbox layoffs. Any single one of these stories could be our lead for the week, but let's get it started with Microsoft's $80 billion investment in their AI infrastructure. Sadly, it has been reported that this is the root cause of the layoffs. Naturally, an investment to the tune of almost $12 billion more than Activision doesn't sneak up on you. The question we're left asking in wake of these claims is how leadership was able to blindside staff within Xbox despite likely knowing about these impending changes for months. Why meet with teams like Zenimax Online Studios and Romero Games, prepare hardware investments, create long term production plans only to axe them by the following weekend? A fired up Rick Hoeg will certainly let us know how he feels on the matter (IYKYK). Speaking of Zenimax Online Studios, we now have details on the canceled Project Blackbird to parse through thanks to multiple insider reports. Blackbird was an online, open world RPG focusing on shooting and traversal mechanics with a planned release window of 2028. With the pedigree of this studio being clear and the risk being low compared to most live service initiatives out there, why shut down something with such great potential? Well, perhaps that's because in a "hits only" business, you need to go with the guarantee. There's no greater guarantee for money than the Fallout IP and, finally, it appears Xbox has come to their senses. Multiple Fallout games are in production! Reason for celebration, no? We'll get to that. Plus, our thoughts on Helldivers 2 coming to Xbox, a Halo project potentially in trouble, and returning once more to the "Great Game Pass Profitability Debate." Please keep in mind that our timestamps are approximate, and will often be slightly off due to dynamic ad placement. 0:00:00 - Intro0:07:15 - Write Ins1:02:59 - What We're Playing1:46:33 - Microsoft's $80 billion investment led to last week's layoffs2:40:54 - Details on Project Blackbird3:21:40 - Multiple Fallout games in development3:39:53 - The next Halo game is in trouble?3:50:59 - Helldivers 2 is coming to Xbox on August 26th4:11:14 - The great Game Pass profitability debate Learn more about your ad choices. The independent online bookseller Bookshop.org took a swipe at Amazon to celebrate the start of Prime Day, Amazon's annual sale (which, despite its name, is actually four days this year). Like many other retailers, Bookshop.org holds a sale to coincide with Amazon's big event — it's a way to lure away consumers. Also, Activision last week brought offline the Microsoft Store version of "Call of Duty: WWII" as the company was investigating “reports of an issue”; and Waymo has begun offering teen accounts for families in Phoenix as it works to expand more of its user base and entrench young riders in the autonomous life.

Welcome to episode #226 of The COD Casuals, where we discuss all things Call of Duty, casual and professional! It's officially that time of year again! We have the next COD teaser trailer that just released for Black Ops 7, which is now already available for preorder, and has everyone talking. This year has left people with more questions than normal, and also a lot more basic demands from this year's installment. We share our thoughts on the trailer, and what COD really needs to focus on this year in order for this to be a turning point in the franchise, and the FPS genre altogether. We also cover the rise of Splitgate 2, and how other FPS titles are entering the sphere and could potentially take some fans away from Black Ops 7, all depending on if they listen to the fans. Will Black Ops 7 live up the hype, or are in for another year of “what if's”? What do you believe is the biggest part of the game that Treyarch and Activision need to succeed on in order to keep fans satisfied? Do you think any of the other FPS games out now will hurt the COD community, or will they fade away? Please let us know as we discuss this and much more! Hope you all enjoy the episode and we'll see you next week.Follow us:Twitter: @TheCODCasualsInstagram: @TheCODCasualsTikTok: @TheCODCasualsContact us:Business Inquiries: TheCODCasuals@gmail.com
The Fork In Your Ear Ep#196 June The Gamers Month (Grok Summary of Transcription 6-14-25) The transcription captures a podcast episode hosted by Tim and Nate, focusing on technical setup issues, entertainment, video games, and tech updates, with a touch of personal life discussion. Here's a concise summary: Technical Setup Struggles (00:00:00 - 00:07:56): Nate and Tim troubleshoot audio and Discord issues during the podcast setup, dealing with problems like audio hijack previews and Mac output changes. They express frustration with technical glitches but eventually resolve them to start recording. Entertainment Discussion (00:08:10 - 00:30:54): The hosts discuss recent entertainment topics, starting with the tragic murder of Jonathan Ross, the voice actor for John Redcorn in King of the Hill, killed on June 1, 2025, in a hate crime. They express condolences and discuss its impact on the show's revival. They review Murderbot, a new Apple TV+ sci-fi comedy series starring Alexander Skarsgård, based on a book series. The show follows a rogue android who wants to watch soap operas but must save inept space hippies. Both hosts enjoy its humor and premise. Tim mentions watching a Gordon Ramsay show, Secret Service, where Ramsay secretly inspects restaurants, and revisiting The Drew Carey Show during a long traffic jam. Nate notes he's been too busy with work to watch much TV. They touch on the TV industry's shift to shorter seasons and the SAG-AFTRA video game strike resolution on June 11, 2025, allowing voice actors to return to major studios like Activision and EA. Video Game Showcases (00:30:54 - 01:47:15): The hosts discuss recent gaming showcases (Summer Game Fest, PlayStation State of Play, Xbox Games Showcase, and Nintendo Switch 2 launch). None stood out as exceptional, but highlights include: Summer Game Fest: A puppet boxing game with realistic physics and Resident Evil 9, set in a post-apocalyptic Raccoon City with toggleable first- and third-person perspectives. PlayStation State of Play: A James Bond game by IO Interactive, focusing on a young Bond, and a 4v4 Marvel fighting game by Arc System Works. The showcase disappointed by not showing more of Ghost of Yotei. Xbox Games Showcase: Announcements for Outer Worlds 2, Grounded 2 (out July 29, 2025), Indiana Jones DLC, and Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade for Xbox. Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 and Solo Leveling: Overdrive were also noted. Nintendo Switch 2: Tim secured a Switch 2 at Costco unexpectedly and praises its design, despite an LCD screen. Games like Mario Kart World and No Man's Sky were discussed, with Mario Kart World criticized for lacking polish and unclear mechanics like rail grinding. Tech Talk (01:47:15 - 02:29:03): Tim shares his Switch 2 experience, praising its sleek design, improved Joy-Cons, HD Rumble 2, and DLSS upscaling, but notes issues with older Switch games in handheld mode due to CPU limitations. The Switch 2 Pro Controller is lauded for its silent, smooth sticks and customization. Nate discusses the Asus ROG Ally X Xbox Edition, a Windows 11 handheld with an Xbox mode, 24GB RAM, and a 1TB SSD. It's compared to the Switch 2 but lacks native Xbox game support, relying on cloud and Play Anywhere titles. They lament confusing microSD Express card standards for the Switch 2 and USB-C cable compatibility issues. Life Updates (02:29:03 - End): Both hosts mention recent birthdays and improving personal circumstances. Nate shares a humorous anecdote about his father gifting him alcohol despite his sobriety, and Tim discusses a USB hub failure affecting his streaming setup. They wrap up with Father's Day wishes and podcast sign-off. The episode blends technical banter, entertainment and gaming news, and personal anecdotes, reflecting the hosts' passion for tech and gaming amidst life's challenges. Marti Romances, co-founder and creative director of Territory Studio San Fransisco, joins the podcast to share his journey from designing DVD menus in Spain to creating iconic futuristic interfaces for blockbuster films like Prometheus, The Martian, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. With roots in multimedia and motion graphics, Marti explains how his early passion for architectural drawings and spatial design naturally evolved into a unique approach to interface aesthetics. His breakthrough came when he moved to the UK and joined Activision, eventually landing at the nascent Territory Studio, where he helped define a new visual language for storytelling through motion design in narrative media. In this episode, we dive into how sci-fi interfaces not only serve narrative functions on screen but often inspire real-world technology—from heads-up displays to augmented reality systems. Marti discusses the balance between realism and imagination in interface design, the transition from on-set graphics to post-production VFX, and how new mediums like AR, AI, and automotive UX are redefining our relationship with digital interaction. As he puts it, the goal is to keep “augmenting the human experience,” whether it's in a movie theater, a car, or a future mixed-reality space.
Welcome to episode #225 of The COD Casuals, where we discuss all things Call of Duty, casual and professional! In this episode, we start off with covering the launch of season 4 for Black Ops 6, which has been nothing short of a complete disaster for Treyarch and Activision. The season launch has opened the gates up to hackers at a level we haven't seen since the early launch of ranked play, and the playerbase isn't happy. With no clear solution or timeline for fixes in sight, players are left wondering if it's still worth it to be playing the game. We share our thoughts on this issue, and our personal experience with it so far. Finally, we end with a discussion of advertisement; a big talking point with season 4. With bundles and packs being shown in every screen of the game, the question is has Activision gone too far, and are they losing sight of what's important for the game. We give our opinions on this discussion.Have you been experiencing the issues we shared in season 4? Do you think Call of Duty is working on a fix to get these issues resolved, or will it remain the same until we get the next title? Finally, has COD gone too far with advertisements for bundles? Do you feel they are losing sight of what is important? Please let us know as we discuss this and much more! Hope you all enjoy the episode and we'll see you next week.Follow us:Twitter: @TheCODCasualsInstagram: @TheCODCasualsTikTok: @TheCODCasualsContact us:Business Inquiries: TheCODCasuals@gmail.com
The crew dives into a jam-packed week of industry news from Nintendo's upcoming Switch 2 launch to Epic's evolving Store strategy. We unpack the growing importance of social features in games and the buzz around the new D&D project from the Star Wars Jedi director. Meanwhile, Elden Ring's Night Reign expansion proves brutally satisfying, while Zynga quietly shuts down the studio behind Torchlight. We also tackle Activision's tone-deaf in-game ads and finish with a sharp Philosophy Corner: why do so many AAA green lights go wrong—and what game dev processes desperately need fixing? Guess what, there's another reason to question the existence of the PS5 Pro! The Sony Sate of Play was pretty solid today, and its mainly due to the James Bond game trailer. Microsoft pushes back its handheld plans, Nintendo keeps it close to the vest, and Activision has a blunder. Plus Netflix has its Tudum, Mark Hamill shares his future, and thank god we don't live in the Michael Bay Superman Timeline. Plus my review of Mission Impossible The Final Reckoning.

Send us a textThe prodigal map returns! After three long years of increasingly frustrating updates that drove away casual players, Call of Duty Warzone has finally listened to its community by bringing back Verdansk – and it might just be the game's saving grace.Stepping back into the familiar terrain feels like rediscovering an old favorite book. The buildings, sightlines, and strategic positioning that made the original Warzone so captivating are all here, but with thoughtful improvements that address previous shortcomings. The addition of natural cover throughout previously exposed areas, swimmable water bodies, and a refined loot system create a more balanced experience without sacrificing what made Verdansk special in the first place. For casual players who might only get a few hours of gameplay each week, this update represents a significant win. The return of map knowledge as a competitive advantage means that even if you can't dedicate eight hours daily to mastering movement mechanics, you can still leverage your familiarity with the environment to outsmart opponents. The one-shot headshot capability of sniper rifles has returned, vehicles can once again be countered effectively with explosives, and the original Gulag provides a balanced 1v1 environment that feels fair for both competitors.Perhaps most importantly, this update strikes the right balance between nostalgia and innovation. Rather than simply repackaging old content, Activision has carefully integrated modern improvements while maintaining the core experience that made Warzone a phenomenon in the first place. The floating loot visualization, progressive ground loot quality throughout match phases, and subtle terrain adjustments all enhance gameplay without fundamentally changing what worked. If you've been away from Warzone due to frustration with previous updates, now might be the perfect time to drop back in. The learning curve is significantly reduced for returning players, and the more balanced gameplay creates opportunities for both tactical play and high-octane action. Whether you're a seasoned veteran or a curious newcomer, Verdansk's return offers the most accessible and enjoyable Warzone experience in years.Support the show

What happens when the dream job turns into a corporate casualty?Benedikt Oehmen spent nearly two decades at Blizzard—first as a support staffer, then a beloved team leader—only to watch the company's gamer-first culture erode after its merger with Activision. "Digital did not ruin filmmaking. Digital gave us the Duplass brothers. Digital democratized it and then people were like, 'Oh well, it's not digital that's going to ruin it, it's this thing called YouTube that's going to ruin it.' And in fact YouTube is incredibly entertaining and good stuff percolates up all the time. And I would just say, sadly every new technology turn has been met with the same argument of it's going to ruin X, and yet it hasn't."Today's episode is a sit down with Matt's friend and award-winning film director, Ben Hansford, where they discuss AI and how it's affecting actors & the entertainment industry. Ben, one of the leading creatives in the A.I. & Machine Learning space (which he now teaches at USC), has worked on multi-national campaigns for some of the world's largest brands including Nike, Old Spice, Bethesda, Call of Duty, Bungie, Activision, EA, X-Box, Microsoft, Mountain Dew, Marvel, & more. So sit back and enjoy this honest, thought-provoking conversation where Matt & Ben discuss AI and not only it's affect on actors, but the industry as a whole.10,000 NOs is here to inspire you and help you realize you are not alone if you're battling to overcome rejection in your career or life. So, if you're an actor, writer or filmmaker and you like what you hear in the snippets from our Working Actors Community zooms enough to want to be a part of it, CLICK HERE.Remember, “failure” is just opportunity in disguise, and you can flip the script to make your setbacks serve you.SHOW LINKS:10,000 NOs: THE BOOKSUBSCRIBE TO OUR (WEEKLY) NEWSLETTERFOLLOW MATT ON SOCIALFIND OUT HOW YOU CAN JOIN THE WORKING ACTORS COMMUNITY
