Tuesday's elections ushered in big wins for Democrats in the NYC mayoral race, Virginia and New Jersey's Governors' races, California's redistricting measure, and more. Meanwhile, Democrats in Congress are still standing their ground as the government shutdown now becomes the longest in US history. Alex speaks to MSNBC's Chris Hayes about what Democrats should take away from these two test cases, and how they should inform the party's politics for the rest of Trump's Presidency. She also hears from individuals living through the first-hand impacts of rising healthcare premiums and the government's pause in food stamps. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. On Tuesday, voters in Virginia, New York City, New Jersey, Texas, California, and Mississippi overwhelmingly supported Democratic candidates and ballot initiatives. In New York, despite facing racist opposition from both Republicans and much of the Democratic establishment, Zohran Mamdani sailed to victory. The new mayor-elect won over 50 percent of the vote in a three-way race. And in Virginia, Governor-elect Abigail Spanberger won with an even greater margin over her opponent, Winsome Earle-Sears, whose campaign weaponized transphobia in a vain attempt to defeat Spanberger. In California, as of Wednesday, nearly two-thirds of the vote favored redrawing the congressional map to counter Republican gerrymandering in Texas. The Intercept Briefing spoke with Amanda Litman, co-founder and president of the PAC Run for Something, and Maurice Mitchell, national director of the Working Families Party, to discuss what lessons Democrats and progressives should take heading into the midterm elections. Mitchell pointed to Mamdani's and other Democrats' success last night at driving home a positive economic message for working-class voters as an important roadmap for next year.“There's elements of [Mamdani's] victory that are very particular to New York, that are very particular to him, but the politics and the conditions that are a part of the victory are happening all across the country,” said Mitchell. “It's clear that this was a wave election. And inside of that wave are a number of independent, progressive-minded folks who didn't wait their turn, who are willing to fight for working people.” Similarly, Litman argued that Democrats need to embrace a big tent that includes progressive voices. "You need candidates who know what they believe, who know how to communicate, who love the place they're running, and who can articulate why voters should want them to win,” she said.Litman continued, “Does every candidate need to have the exact same ideological profile? No. But also, the person who's running and winning a seat on the Iowa City Council is probably not a good fit for the New York City Council, and vice versa. And that's OK. To be a party that can win everywhere, which is what we need to be in order to stop authoritarianism and stop what the Republican Party has done, we need to have a big tent.” Listen to the full conversation of The Intercept Briefing on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you listen. You can support our work at theintercept.com/join. Jason Kander and Ravi Gupta break down the Democrats' dominating victories in Virginia and New Jersey, where early returns and strong turnout have analysts like Harry Enten and Dave Wasserman predicting Democrats could be favored to retake the House in 2026. They unpack how the results exposed cracks in the GOP coalition, with MAGA influencers blaming “weak” Republican candidates and moderates pointing to Trump's shutdown chaos and record-low approval rating of -18%. Kander and Gupta also examine how Democratic leaders from Gavin Newsom to Bill Ferguson framed the victories as proof that competence and optimism still win, even as Republicans melted down online over their losses. Plus, they analyze the high-stakes Supreme Court case that could unravel Trump's global tariffs, what it means for the U.S. economy, and how it fits into a broader crisis of Trump's leadership. "We can respond to oligarchy and authoritarianism with the strength it fears, not the appeasement it craves." – Zohran Mamdani Welcome to the Gaslit Nation Election Super Special – a block party celebrating the proud American tradition of punching Nazis. Election Day 2025 will go down in history as D-Day for democracy. Terrell Starr joins Andrea to break down what these nationwide victories mean for the future, from the midterms and beyond. It's clear who Americans blame for the government shutdown. The blue tsunami showed up and reshaped the map, literally. In Virginia, Abigail Spanberger made history as the state's first woman governor as Democrats swept the governorship, lieutenant governorship, and attorney general, with nearly every county shifting blue. In New Jersey, Mikie Sherrill became the first Democratic woman to lead the state, with Democrats gaining seats across the legislature. Our people-powered victories weren't a "blue bubble" story as Donald Trump wants you to believe. Democrats flipped two seats in Mississippi, two statewide offices in Georgia, won the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, and wiped GOP control off the Bucks County school board. Colorado voted to feed kids, Charlotte funded transit, Maine rejected voter suppression, progressive D.A.s Larry Krasner in Philadelphia and Alvin Bragg in Manhattan won re-election, and California overwhelmingly voted for redistricting self-defense against GOP autocracy. More on the redistricting battle in future episodes. And in New York City, Zohran Mamdani, just 34, the city's first Muslim mayor and the youngest since 1982, the first candidate to get over 1 million votes since 1969, delivered a victory speech so electric it could light up Times Square, reminding us that unity and humanity are the real antidotes to greed and fear. The fascists forced a fight, and democracy punched back. This is only the beginning. On episode 104 of Native Land Pod, hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Bakari Sellers go through this week’s election results and take an account of how our Black candidates (and voters) performed. The race for NYC’s mayor dominated the airwaves, where Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani won. BUT there were other important races. Black mayors were elected across the country, the governor race in Virginia and New Jersey went solidly Democratic, and State-level elections in the South saw typically conservative seats flip blue. Folks are wondering if Mamdani is the new “face of the Democratic party” which WE think is missing the point. NLP is joined by President Biden’s former press secretary (the first Black woman to hold the job) Karine Jeane-Pierre to discuss some of the election results and Democrat’s media strategy. In her new book, Independent: A Look Inside a Broken White House, Outside Party Lines, Karine shares some pointed critiques of a party she no longer identifies with, and our hosts ask some pointed questions of Karine. And our hosts respond to your questions! There’s an interesting one about infiltrating the Republican party and another from a chef asking who is keeping our legacy “recipes.” If you’d like to submit a question, check out our tutorial video: http://www.instagram.com/reel/C5j_oBXLIg0/ and send to @nativelandpod. The New Yorker staff writer Benjamin Wallace-Wells joins Tyler Foggatt to discuss Democrats' sweeping victories in the first major elections of Donald Trump's second term. They talk about what the results—from Zohran Mamdani's record-turnout win in New York City to victories in the Virginia and New Jersey gubernatorial races—reveal about Trump's weakening hold on voters and a generational shift inside the Democratic Party. They also explore how a focus on affordability and economic anxiety fuelled Democrats' success, and how these outcomes may shape the strategies of both parties heading into next year's midterms. This week's reading: “A Next-Generation Victory for Democrats,” by Benjamin Wallace-Wells “What the Democrats' Good Night Means for 2026 and Beyond,” by Isaac Chotiner “California Strikes Back in the Redistricting War,” by Jon Allsop “The Mamdani Era Begins,” by Eric Lach “The N.Y.C. In Tuesday's elections, Democrats scored crushing victories everywhere. They won the Virginia and New Jersey gubernatorial races by double digits, made big inroads with working class voters, handily won the California referendum, which could result in five more Democratic House seats, and more. Yet Trump is blaming everyone but himself. Punchbowl's Andrew Desiderio reports that he privately rebuked GOP Senators, suggesting their shutdown was the culprit. He urged them to nuke the filibuster to end the shutdown, claiming failure could render the GOP a “dead party.” And he angrily snapped at Senator Lindsey Graham in the process. In short, Trump cannot accept something fundamental: His coalition is much more fragile than advertised, and he is making it even worse by, well, wrecking the country. We talked to New Republic senior editor Alex Shephard, who has a good new piece on the energy driving Democrats. We discuss the shift of working class voters toward Democrats, the media's hangover from overreading Trump's 2024 win, and the through line connecting those gubernatorial victories with Zohran Mamdani's triumph. Democrats won two governor's races in Virginia and New Jersey, victories they call a rejection of President Trump's policies and a sign that economic issues are resonating with voters. New York City elected Zohran Mamdani as its first Muslim mayor, defeating former governor Andrew Cuomo in a race that drew record voter turnout. And California voters approved a new congressional map that could give Democrats up to five more House seats in next year's midterms.Want more comprehensive analysis of the most important news of the day, plus a little fun? Democrats saw major wins in Tuesday's elections, from California's redistricting ballot measure to gubernatorial races in Virginia and New Jersey and the mayoral race in New York City. On Tuesday's Mark Levin Show, serious challenges are unfolding in Democrat strongholds like New York City, Virginia, and New Jersey. Zohran Mamdani is increasingly brazen, openly supporting the BDS movement, which aims to economically destroy the largely Jewish state of Israel, making it an act of antisemitism backed by terrorist-supporting entities. Abigail Spanberger officially wins the race for Virginia Governor and Ghazala Hashmi wins the race for Lt Governor. Mikie Sherrill wins the race for NJ Governor. Virginia and NJ will now be a much more radical state than it was. Later, we denounce alt-right, woke isolationist, anti-American fake MAGA reprobates like Nick Fuentes and Tucker Carlson. They trash Judeo-Christian roots, American history, and values while promoting Sharia and praising Hitler. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Tuesday was Election Day and Democrats won big! Voters in New York City elected Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani as their next mayor. In Georgia, Democrats won their first statewide elections in 20 years, flipping two seats on the board that controls electricity costs in the state – a direct response to rising power prices. And in New Jersey, Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill won a tough race to keep the state's governor's mansion blue. While in Virginia, former Democratic House Representative Abigail Spanberger won the governor's race, flipping the state's governor's seat back to the Democrats. For more on the Democrats' big night, we spoke with Pod Save America co-host Jon Favreau.Show Notes:Call Congress – 202-224-3121Subscribe to the What A Day Newsletter – https://tinyurl.com/3kk4nyz8What A Day – YouTube – https://www.youtube.com/@whatadaypodcastFollow us on Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/crookedmedia/For a transcript of this episode, please visit crooked.com/whataday Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. The huge Democratic wins in Virginia, New Jersey, NYC, and California spoke loud and clear—and make Trump's 2024 supposed ‘landslide' margin of 1.5% look even more wimpy. Trump is not delivering on his economic promises and the backlash was across the board. Voters are also rejecting the overreach of Stephen Miller's nativist immigration policy, particularly Latino voters. One of the biggest impacts from Tuesday's elections is that redistricting suddenly looks like it favors the Dems. Plus, what Mamdani could teach Democrats, and the bad place the Republicans put the party in by focusing on Trump's random obsessions instead of talking about the concerns of voters. Democrats won big in last night’s election results. Zohran Mamdani won the race for New York mayor, and there were victories in the New Jersey and Virginia gubernatorial races. Plus, California voted Yes on a key redistricting measure. ABC offers key takeaways. The Supreme Court is set to hear arguments over Trump’s signature tariff policy. Greg Stohr of Bloomberg explains why some businesses that have already paid steep import taxes might get a refund if Trump loses. Plus, the latest on a Kentucky plane crash, the shutdown drags on but negotiations are picking up, and why some living people in Maine received letters informing them of their own deaths. Today’s episode was hosted by Shumita Basu.
There was little suspense after polls closed yesterday. Democrat Mikie Sherrill won the governor's office in New Jersey, Abigail Spanberger easily defeated Republican Winsome Earle-Sears for the same office in Virginia, and Californians voted to redraw congressional maps to give Democrats an edge in next year's midterm elections. In New York City, Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani was elected the city's next mayor after defeating established Democrats like former governor Andrew M. Cuomo in the primary. Host Colby Itkowitz talks to Dan Merica, co-anchor of The Post's Early Brief politics newsletter, about the lessons learned and major takeaways from each of these contests.Today's show was produced by Laura Benshoff and Josh Carroll. Woodard maps America's clashing "nations," from American Nations to Nations Apart, arguing that our deepest divides are regional and newly combustible. He makes the case that post–Cold War policy, social media, and a fraying social contract turned long-standing cultural seams into political fracture zones. We press whether his framework explains why now more than past crises. Plus: a quick read of the 11/5 results — Democratic gains in New Jersey and Virginia, Maine's voter-ID rejection, a Georgia PSC flip, and late counts in Minneapolis and Seattle. And in Virginia, Barack Obama's hypocritical endorsement of DEI-pushing Abigail Spanberger over trailblazing Black Republican Winsome Earle-Sears? We'll break down the left's "systemic racism" flip-flop with fiery audio that makes you question: politics or principles?Shifting gears to the Big Apple, Elon's torching NYC's mayoral ballot as a straight-up scam—no ID, duplicate names, Cuomo buried at the bottom. Then, meet Zohran Mamdani, the socialist firebrand whose "Democrat" word salad has street-level libs drooling over government-run grocery stores and "lifting everybody up" with zero clue on costs. We'll roll clips of clueless voters, a ranting communist vowing to seize food industries, and a white liberal's wildest worries: ICE raids on illegals and kids' sex changes. It's peak progressive absurdity, straight from the rallies—proving Europe's Muslim power grabs and Dearborn's call-to-prayer wake-ups are just a Mamdani win away. But it's not all outrage—join us for a raw, eye-opening chat with Vaccine Choice Canada's Ted Kuntz, whose son's DPT nightmare sparked a 40-year crusade for medical freedom. From underreported seizures to mRNA red flags, he'll torch the industry's "safety" lies and champion informed consent over herd immunity hype. We also have a blistering fax blast demanding Congress deport 'em all or face removal, slamming sanctuary treason from Pritzker to Omar. Tune in—because if we don't fight the invasion now, America's ballot box becomes its battlefield. Don't miss the untamed truth!
Hillsdale College Radio General Manager and Radio Free Hillsdale Hour host Scot Bertram fills in for Jim on Wednesday's 3 Martini Lunch. Join Scot and Greg as they break down Democrats' bigger-than-expected wins in Virginia and New Jersey, Zohran Mamdani coasting to victory in New York City, and several ballot initiatives that mostly went the wrong way.First, they dig into Virginia, where Democrat Abigail defeated Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears by nearly 15 points, outperforming every major poll. That landslide also helped rage texter Jay Jones win the attorney general's race by six points, while Democrats picked up 13 seats in the state legislature. In New Jersey, Democrat Mikie Sherrill beat Jack Ciattarelli by 13 points. The wins were not shocking, but the margins were, and Scot and Greg break down what those results mean heading into 2026.Next, they come to grips with Zohran Mamdani winning the New York City mayor's race by taking comfort that Andrew Cuomo won't be mayor. They also highlight some very ominous indications of what's to come from Mamdani's victory speech. Dems will undoubtedly try to mimic his smiley socialism in some parts of the country next year. Are Republicans ready to fight it?Finally, they analyze key ballot measures across the country, including strong conservative victories in Texas protecting parental rights and requiring proof of citizenship to vote. But not all results went the right way, as Gavin Newsom's gerrymander gimmick passed easily in California, and Colorado voters approved a tax hike on the wealthy to fund free school meals. Please visit our great sponsors:Give your liver the support it deserves with Dose Daily.
