Does Spider-Noir get its blend of noir and superheroes right? In the 2018 film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Nicolas Cage gave us a taste of a black and white, film-noir Spider-Man who talked in Dashiell Hammett dialogue. Spider-Noir Editors – Jennifer Barbot, ACE; Tirsa Hackshaw, ACE; Eric Kissack, ACE and Geraud Brisson, ACE Although the editors of Spider-Noir may have all arrived at the series through different paths, they quickly found themselves working toward the same goal: shaping a superhero story that functions first and foremost as a noir detective tale. For Jennifer Barbot, Tirsa Hackshaw, Eric Kissack, and Geraud Brisson, that meant balancing 1930s atmosphere, modern pacing, dry comedy, stylized action, and the very particular energy of a Nicolas Cage performance. Created by Oren Uziel for MGM+ and Prime Video, Spider-Noir stars Nicolas Cage as Ben Reilly, a down-on-his-luck private investigator in 1930s New York who is pulled back into his former life as the city's only superhero, The Spider. The series also stars Lamorne Morris, Li Jun Li, Karen Rodriguez, Jack Huston and Brendan Gleeson, and is presented in both "Authentic Black and White" and "True-Hue Full Color" versions. For the editors, that dual-format release created one of the show's most interesting creative and technical challenges. The editors primarily cut in black and white, leaning into the shadows, contrast and classic noir language of the series, while visual effects reviews often revealed the same scenes in color. The result was a show that could feel emotionally different depending on which version was being watched, even when the underlying performance, rhythm and story remained the same. JENNIFER BARBOT, ACE Jennifer Barbot is an editor whose credits include Your Honor, Raised by Wolves, The Man in the High Castle, Jessica Jones and Dope Thief. On Spider-Noir, Jennifer was drawn to the show's mix of noir style, superhero mythology and emotional character work, as well as the opportunity to help establish the tone of a world that had to feel both period-inspired and contemporary. TIRSA HACKSHAW, ACE Tirsa Hackshaw, ACE has worked across a wide range of television and film projects, including One Piece, Kung Fu, Jupiter's Legacy, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones and The Punisher. Having previously worked with Steve Lightfoot on Marvel's The Punisher, Tirsa came to Spider-Noir with both a love of the noir genre and a deep appreciation for the Spider-Verse, making the show a natural fit for her interests as an editor. ERIC KISSACK, ACE Eric Kissack, ACE is an editor and director whose work includes The Good Place, Veep, Black Monday, Rutherford Falls, Pam & Tommy and The Studio. He has also edited feature comedies such as Role Models, Brüno, Cedar Rapids, The Dictator, Horrible Bosses 2, Daddy's Home, Instant Family, Barb & Star Go to Vista Del Mar and Bottoms. On Spider-Noir, Eric was especially interested in the show's dry, organic comedy and in finding a rhythm that allowed the humor to breathe without undercutting the detective story. GERAUD BRISSON, ACE Geraud Brisson, ACE is a French-American film and television editor whose credits include CODA, The OA, Counterpart, This Close, Shantaram and Lessons in Chemistry. Having previously worked with Steve Lightfoot on Shantaram, Geraud was excited by the chance to explore a superhero-oriented story through the lens of noir. His work on Spider-Noir included sequences that blended action, subjective sound, visual effects and classic film references into the show's distinctive style.   Visit ExtremeMusic for all your production audio needs Hear Eric discuss his work on THE STUDIO Listen to Geraud discuss cutting Best Picture Oscar-winner CODA Subscribe to The Rough Cut podcast and never miss an episode Visit The Rough Cut on YouTube

Some shows walk into the room with a genre label pinned neatly to their shirt. They wear it like a badge of honor and adhere to all rules therein. “Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed” kicks the door open, knocks over the lamp, checks its phone (Where's my phone?!), spirals emotionally, and somehow still has time to become a murder mystery. It's part divorce drama, part paranoid thriller, part loneliness comedy, and part “please stop making that decision, Paula” anxiety machine. Better yet, it knows exactly how messy that cocktail should taste, and, boy, does it taste good. The new Apple TV+ series stars Tatiana Maslany as Paula, a lonely single mother caught in the meat grinder of divorce, custody fights, work stress, and modern connection. When she reaches out through her computer for something that looks like intimacy, or maybe just proof that she still exists outside everyone else's demands, she tumbles into a voyeuristic thriller that writer David Rosen described as a “modern day Rear Window.” The series also stars Jake Johnson as Carl, Paula's ex-husband and co-parent, a man who often looks like the reasonable adult in the room until reason starts feeling a little too much like the wrong kind of control. On this episode of Bingeworthy, host Mike DeAngelo speaks with Maslany, Johnson, Rosen, and director David Gordon Green about building the show's live-wire tone, turning a broken relationship into a suspense engine, and finding humor inside a life that already feels like it has 19 browser tabs open.

The final episode of the current series of the podcast addresses the phenomenon of KPop Demon Hunters (Maggie Kang & Chris Appelhans, 2025), the most watched original animated film of all time on Netflix whose global reach, critical and commercial success, and intensified fandom has positioned it as central to the contemporary ‘Korean Wave' marked by the international visibility and popularity of cultural exports produced by South Korea. In this instalment, Chris and Alex discuss the diversity of aesthetic styles that defines KPop Demon Hunters and how its design fits into post-Spider-Verse computer-animated filmmaking; images of manufacture and performance, and how they contribute to a highly reflexive engagement with the industry and business of pop music; the emphasis placed on the labour of creativity at the expense of physicality; the politics of female friendship and big-screen shift towards the “girlfriend action flick”; how the narrative's celebration of a Golden Honmoon illustrates the pleasures of communality, collaboration, and joy; and what the didacticism of KPop Demon Hunters has to say about the struggles in finding your voice and ultimately defeating your demons. **Fantasy/Animation theme tune composed by Francisca Araujo** **As featured on Feedspot's 25 Best London Education Podcasts** **As featured on MillionPodcast's Best 10 UK Animation Podcasts and Best 60 Movie Podcasts in the UK**

Another week, another episode where we somehow go from broccoli discourse to self-driving cars to limb regeneration technology and then cap it all off with rogue timestreams on a college campus. Just a normal day for The Science Faction Podcast. Real Life Ben opens the show with an important culinary clarification: broccoli is the green one. Not the other green one. Also maybe "broccolini" exists? Science remains divided. Meanwhile, Ben's household has become a temporary kitten sanctuary. Tiny baby cats are everywhere, and while Ben is trying his best, he freely admits his wife appears to be significantly more qualified in the art of keeping tiny creatures alive. On top of that, his son has started developing an actual social life, which Ben correctly identifies as a direct threat to traditional family hanging-out time. The family also continues debating the orbital mechanics of For All Mankind, with Ben's 12-year-old officially unconvinced by the show's space logistics. Devon reports back from a Dallas anniversary trip with his wife celebrating ten years of marriage. The trip included visits to the Perot Natural History Museum, multiple Waymo sightings, an improv show with front-row seats, and a self-driving Uber ride that still included a human technician nervously supervising the robot future. Steven survived a busy week while his wife was out of town and also got some bonus hangout time with Devon during the visit. Naturally, this somehow led to new miniatures for Cyberpunk Red: Combat Zone entering the house. The crew also stumbles into Texas voter registration statistics, discovering that as of August 2025 there were reportedly more registered Democrats than Republicans in Texas, which sparks discussion about perception versus raw registration numbers. According to reporting from Independent Voter News, Democrats accounted for approximately 46.52% of registered voters compared to 37.75% registered Republicans. Future or Now (~10 min ea) Devon brings in one of the wildest science stories of the week: researchers may have identified a key genetic pathway involved in limb regeneration. Scientists studying axolotls, zebrafish, and mice uncovered a family of "SP genes" connected to regeneration. By disabling these genes, proper bone regrowth stopped entirely. Researchers then used zebrafish-inspired gene therapy techniques to partially restore regeneration in mice. The long-term dream? Moving beyond prosthetics and eventually regrowing living tissue and limbs in humans. Tiny salamanders may once again be carrying the future of medicine on their weird smiling backs. Read more from ScienceDaily. Ben follows that up with a double nostalgia feature. First up is The Thirteenth Floor, the underrated 1999 sci-fi film that had the misfortune of arriving alongside The Matrix. Decades later, removed from direct comparisons, Ben argues the movie absolutely holds up and deserves a second look. Then comes a glowing recommendation for Mixtape, a coming-of-age game centered around three teenage friends spending one final night together before life changes forever. Ben describes it as emotionally sincere, genuinely hilarious, visually stunning, and powered by an incredible soundtrack. The animation style apparently evokes Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse energy, while the tone lands somewhere between Dazed and Confused, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, and High Fidelity. Ben strongly recommends it even for non-gamers, suggesting that simply watching a playthrough could still deliver a great experience. Check it out at Mixtape Official Site. Steven unfortunately runs out of time this week, proving once again that reality remains the greatest enemy of podcast scheduling. Book Club  Next Week's Story Next week the crew will be reading: Narcissus Meets the Ghost of AI in a Dark Alley Behind a Fusion Restaurant by Lesley Hart Gunn "I suppose you want my wallet. No? My body then." This Week's Story This week's discussion focused on: Update on Rules for the Spatiotemporal Use of Campus Spaces by Andrea Kriz The story presents a university campus slowly unraveling under the pressure of a rogue timestream, delivered through increasingly absurd administrative announcements and policy updates. "Dear Members of the Community, As we begin yet another fall semester in the throes of the rogue timestream unleashed on our campus…" The crew spends a lot of time trying to piece together exactly what catastrophic event caused the university to devolve into bureaucratic temporal chaos. Everyone agreed the story was fantastic, weird in exactly the right ways, and surprisingly effective at balancing humor with unsettling implications. Read it here: Lightspeed Magazine – Update on Rules for the Spatiotemporal Use of Campus Spaces Thanks for listening to the show! What's Up, Danger? Leaps of Faith in IVF, Career, and Life Courtney shares that "What's Up Danger" from Into the Spider-Verse helped her hype herself up to self-administer painful IVF hormone shots, connecting it to Miles Morales' leap-of-faith scene where he forces himself to let go. Juana and Courtney reflect on IVF as a physically and psychologically difficult experience that ultimately led them to two children, and broaden the metaphor to career risk-taking: leaving steady jobs, pursuing fulfillment, and taking scary but necessary next steps, including a recent leap Courtney made that shifted not just money but time. They compare the thrill and terror to Man on Wire and discuss learning to be "intentionally nervous" while rejecting the idea of a perfect path. Courtney cites adopting their dog Harvey—initially wanting to give him away—as another personal leap, and they end by urging listeners to find their own "song" for big decisions.   00:00 Song That Got Me Through 00:33 IVF Shots And Fear 01:14 Leap Of Faith Scene 01:58 Why The Moment Hits 02:58 IVF Trauma Bond 03:27 Career Leaps And Fulfillment 04:21 Terrifying Next Level Move 05:06 Man On A Wire Analogy 05:43 Choosing Nerves On Purpose 06:45 Next Danger Era 07:58 Host Quits His Job 09:16 Harvey The Dog Leap 10:41 Find Your Own Song

[School of Movies 2026] This is a commissioned episode for Toby Skeels-Jungius and Chris Finik. It also happens to be our second show in a row about a bunch of stunningly animated ninja teens who are taught their skills by Jackie Chan, deal with both High School and abiding Daddy issues and wind up having to defend a metropolitan city from a Kaiju attack, thus proving their worth in the process, to the people, to their immediate family, and to themselves. Mutant Mayhem is in fact the TENTH Ninja Turtles movie, and it's up there with the very best of what has come before. On this show we recruit Willow who finally gets to talk about their favourite brothers, as we look back on creative choices of previous incarnations and what this one does to set itself apart. And while you could superficially say it has Spider-Verse animation, we hope that how we articulate the distinction gives you folks a clearer idea of what I'm terming ''Asymmetrical, Impressionist Graffiti'. Next week we begin a month-long project focusing on movies with the theme of Artificial Intelligence.

⚠️ FULL SPOILERS. If you haven't read the book or seen Project Hail Mary yet, do that first, then come back.Andy Weir fans have been waiting for this one. The 2021 bestselling novel finally makes its big screen debut and this is the kind of movie that reminds you what movie magic can actually feel like.Ryan Gosling (star and producer), Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall, The Zone of Interest), directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller (21 Jump Street, Spider-Verse), and the voice and puppetry team behind Rocky team up to bring Weir's epic to life. It's a tall order given how many people love this book and how many millions were absorbed by Ray Porter's unrivaled audiobook narration.Sohrab and Roya break it all down. Does Gosling nail the balance of Grace, the goofy, brilliant, emotionally isolated scientist thrust into an impossible mission? Does Hüller carry the cold, commanding presence of Strat with the laser focus the role demands? And how do you bring a faceless alien to life and make the entire audience fall in love with him?Weir does it again, a story built on optimism, science, intelligence, and teamwork against insurmountable odds. Ted Lasso comes to mind: even in the darkest moments, there is always a place for hope. You feel that in every scene.Yes, things were cut from the book. Yes, changes were made. Are there some bumps and decisions we didn't fully understand on first viewing? Sure. Does this still deliver? Hell yes.Project Hail Mary has already locked its place on the best films of 2026 list and its theatrical run has been extended, including on IMAX. See it on the biggest screen you can. When it hits Prime Video, that'll be your second or third watch. If you are enjoying the show, please leave a review on Apple Podcasts or Spotify.
