3356: What Moodle Teaches Us About the Future of Open Learning

    The Tech Blog Writer Podcast

What if the key to global access to high-quality education isn't policy reform or private investment, but open source software? In this episode of Tech Talks Daily, I sit down with Scott Anderberg, CEO of Moodle, to explore how one of the world's most widely used learning platforms is quietly transforming education in ways that extend far beyond the classroom. Scott's journey is anything but linear. From helpdesk support in Denver to leading online education efforts across the US, UK, and Australia, his international experience has shaped a clear mission: to make education more accessible, more inclusive, and more creative. His role at Moodle aligns perfectly with that goal. We discuss what open source really means in the context of education and why it continues to be misunderstood. Scott explains how Moodle's global community of developers and educators contributes everything from security-tested code to deeply localised customisations that enable learning to happen anywhere, even in places without electricity. Projects like MoodleBox and the Inventorium for at-risk students in Australia reveal the power of local innovation when built on flexible, open platforms. Scott also outlines Moodle's measured approach to AI, focusing on what delivers actual value. Rather than embedding generative tools for novelty, they've released an AI subsystem that allows the community to experiment and share what works. This model not only encourages innovation but also respects the diverse regulatory, cultural, and economic environments their users operate within. Throughout the conversation, we explore the myths that often discourage adoption of open source solutions. Security, support, and scalability are frequently raised, but Scott shows how Moodle's global ecosystem consistently challenges those assumptions. Innovation doesn't have to be proprietary or top-down. In fact, when communities co-create solutions, the results are often more resilient and more relevant. We close with a powerful reflection on the importance of diversity in both tech and education. While some organisations are becoming hesitant to talk about inclusion, Scott argues that now is the time to stand firm. Education is about connection, and you cannot truly connect people if only a narrow group is included in the conversation. Open platforms like Moodle make it possible to include everyone, not just in theory but in practice. So can open source help us rebuild education in a way that is genuinely inclusive and globally relevant? Or are there still barriers that need to be broken? I'd love to hear your thoughts. What role should open platforms play in shaping the next chapter of learning?

Welcome to the Art of Value Whispering podcast In this episode of the Brilliant Business Book Festival, I'm joined by Bob Burg, co-author of the widely loved book: The Go-Giver.   ‍ Bob's writing started with a practical sales book, Endless Referrals, but soon realized the power of storytelling. That led to The Go-Giver, a business parable built around timeless relationship-building principles. ‍ In this insightful episode, Bob shares why giving in business isn't about self-sacrifice - it's about building deep, trusted relationships that grow your impact and income.  ‍ Through storytelling, timeless principles, and real-world experience, he reveals how shifting focus from getting to giving is the secret to sustainable business success. ‍ Join me in this episode to discover practical insights for growing a value-led business, navigating boundaries, asking boldly, and building a brand others can't help but advocate for. ‍ ‍ “Success in business isn't about taking, it's about becoming the kind of person others know, like and trust.” - Bob Burg ‍ In this Week's Episode... ‍ In this episode, you will learn: ‍ Why The Go-Giver was written as a parable, and how that format transforms learning. The true difference between Go-Givers, Go-Getters, and Go-Takers. How value is perceived in the other people's eye and how you define it . Why introverts are naturally better at sales, and how to lean into that. How to give generously without becoming a doormat or burning out. ‍

In Chile, a powerful new telescope has just given a taster of what we can expect from it later this year, when it will be used to survey the cosmos over a ten-year period. In one image it revealed vast colourful gas and dust clouds swirling in a star-forming region 9,000 light years from the Earth. Housed in the Vera C Rubin Observatory, which sits on a mountain in the Chilean Andes, the telescope is designed to get giant images of the sky about one hundred times larger and quicker than any other existing telescope can achieve. It contains the world's most largest digital camera, the size of a large car. When the Legacy Survey of Space and Time begins towards the end of 2025, the camera will film the entire Southern hemisphere night sky for the next decade, every three days, repeating the process over and over. And it will focus on four areas: mapping changes in the skies or transient objects, the formation of the Milky Way, mapping the Solar System and understanding dark matter or how the universe formed. So, on this week's Inquiry, we're asking, ‘What will Chile's latest telescope tell us about the Universe?'Contributors: Catherine Heymans, Professor of Astrophysics, University of Edinburgh, Astronomer Royal for Scotland, UK Željko Ivezić, Director of Rubin Construction, Professor of Astronomy, University of Washington, USA Dr. Megan Schwamb, Planetary Astronomer, Reader, School of Mathematics and Physics, Queen's University, Belfast, Northern Ireland Dr. Burçin Mutlu-Pakdil, Observational Astronomer, Assistant Professor, Physics and Astronomy, Dartmouth College, New Hampshire, USAPresenter: Charmaine Cozier Producers: Louise Clarke and Jill Collins Researcher: Maeve Schaffer Editor: Tara McDermott Technical Producer: Craig Boardman Production Management Assistant: Liam Morrey Image Credit: Anadolu via Getty Images

They share insights on how they built momentum for their album through weekly singles, the role of their team in the creative process, and the significance of maintaining a supportive collective in their label, Circus Records. In this conversation, the speakers discuss the evolution of the music industry, particularly the impact of streaming and social media on artists' careers. They explore the challenges of building a musical identity in a crowded market, the role of gimmicks in attracting attention, and the importance of authenticity in music. The discussion also touches on collaboration dynamics and the creation of unique live experiences for audiences.Who is Dr P: Any true fan of electronic music should instantly recognize Doctor P as one of the original godfathers of modern bass-driven music. A true music lover at heart, Doctor P, aka Shaun Brockhurst, has had an intense love of music since he was just a teenager jamming with his friends on drums and guitar. Doctor P is what you might label as a triple threat as his talent can be found in the roles he effortlessly balances as a musician, producer, and DJ. He also founded Circus Records with long time friend Flux Pavilion.Who is Flux Pavilion: Influenced by the likes of The Prodigy, Basement Jaxx and dubstep pioneer Rusko, Flux loved the high energy madness that dance music was capable of and set about making some of his own in the form of dubstep. Already adept with production skills he was soon off the starting block and with his tunes swiftly generating interest on the circuit, it was soon clear that what started of as a bit of experimentation had led to Flux landing on his feet with the dubstep sound. While his career flourished Flux and childhood friend Doctor P had also been working on some stuff together. They teamed up with legendary DJ and drum and bass pioneer DJ Swan-e, and Earl Falconer of UB40, and together formed the infamous Circus Records. It's well known that the 1960s had seen a revival of interest in the US and the UK in folk music – most particularly in its crossover to more contemporary styles. In the UK, traditional folk music preservation, academia and performance had long been part of the culture, but by the 1960s it seems there was conflict between those who wanted to play the music “authentically” (thus ignoring that folk songs had always evolved over the centuries), those who wanted to play those songs in a more contemporary fashion, and (shock horror) those who wanted to compose NEW songs in an accepted folk style. Welcome to episode 187 of Love That Album podcast. While there were many groups in the UK who were a part of the folk-rock scene starting in the 1960s, the three most famous were Fairport Convention, Pentangle and Steeleye Span. It seems that group memberships had something of a revolving door policy with many leaving one to join another when musical ideologies weren't being met. Ashley Hutchings had become dissatisfied with the direction that Fairport was headed, and formed Steeleye Span. Span themselves went through several lineup and sound changes before arriving at its accepted classic lineup for their sixth LP, Now We Are Six. The focus of this LTA is album number 7, released in 1975, Commoner's Crown. I am joined once again by the co-host of the superb Only Three Lads podcast, Brett Vargo. He is a man of many musical passions, and one of them is the English folk scene of that 60s / 70s period. I discovered you can't have a proper discussion on Span (or maybe other folk groups as well) without talking about the Child Ballads. I need to give credit to Nate Wilcox of the wonderful Let It Roll podcast who drew my attention to the existence of the Child Ballads through his show. It's a shame our recording schedules couldn't align for him to join us, but hopefully somewhere down the track Nate will be back on LTA. Brett and I discuss some Steeleye Span history, Frances Child's contribution to the folk and rock repertoire, murder, infidelity, drugs and theft – all folk subject staples. The folk repertoire is so much about story-telling, so we delve into the origins of some of these songs, how the stories changed over the centuries to the point of Steeleye Span recording, and the musicianship and vocal arrangements on Commoner's Crown…..oh and we discuss about how Hercules Grytpype-Thynne dropped by to play some ukelele. My huge gratitude goes to Brett for providing his insight to this music and time to the show. Only Three Lads is an essential podcast listen. Every week, Brett and Uncle Gregg bring in incredible musician guests from the golden age of alternative music to discuss not only their own work, but to help count down a top 5 of whatever the given subject may be. For years, the narrative has been the same: Christianity is dying in the West. Churches are empty. Faith is fading. Some even predicted that Christianity would be extinct in the UK by 2067. At the same time, people have looked at the younger generations—especially Gen Z—and dismissed them as spiritually disengaged, screen-addicted, and uninterested in anything deeper than memes and dopamine. But the latest data tells a very different story. Something's happening. Across the UK and the US, young people—especially young men—are showing up in churches, praying, exploring faith, reading the Bible, and defying the expectations everyone had for them. On today's episode, we're unpacking the quiet revival that no one saw coming—and why it just might reshape the future of the church.

Why did a Sequoia partner in faraway Silicon Valley feel the need to troll the Democratic nominee for New York City mayor? Bradley breaks down the power dynamics at play in Sean Maguire's inflammatory remarks about Zohran Mamdani: a high-performing VC chasing attention, a prestigious firm caught in the crossfire, and the challenge of balancing individual expression with institutional risk. Maguire's move wasn't a misstep, says Bradley, it was a calculated play for relevance in a niche echo chamber.
