One Day? Nein Day One!

The gang discusses two papers that look at the impact of humans on bird populations. The first paper looks at the history of a condor nesting site in the Andes, and the second paper looks at the impact of artificial light on the circadian rhythms of urban bird populations. Meanwhile, James is highly engaged, Curt tries to sell some property, Amanda finds something slightly more horrifying, and everyone is in the presence of ALAN. Up-Goer Five (Curt Edition): The friends look at how people have made life different for small animals that fly in the air and some of them make sweet sounds. The first paper looks at the home for one type of these animals that is pretty big and eats things that are dead. These animals have been using this home for a really long time, and we can look at their shit (yes this is the only word I can use) to see what they ate in the past and also see how long they have been there. A long time ago, their shit shows that they ate a lot of things from the big blue wet thing, probably lots of big animals that have hair and move through the water. When people started to kill these big animals, these animals that fly started to eat less of them. We can even see when these animals started to eat things that people from across a different big blue wet thing brought with them to eat. This shows that these homes are used for very long time, and so making sure that these animals can get to these homes and that the homes are safe is important to keeping them living. The second paper looks at how some small animals that fly sleep and if being in a city makes these animals sleep at different times or for longer or shorter. The idea is that the city has a lot more light than the woods and can make it harder to get to sleep. The paper looks at these animals living in the woods and animals living in the city. It first looks at their homes to see how much time they spend in their homes. They find that both groups of animals spend about the same time in their homes. City animals get out of their homes earlier in the day, but that seems to be that they are also setting up their home earlier in the year and need to get out to get stuff for the home. They then take these animals and they put them in a dark room to see how much they move with no change in light. They find the woods animals start moving less right away, but the city animals take longer before they start moving less. This could be because the room has low light and the animals from the city are more used to that, or it could be that the animals from the city are more used to being in bad spots. Either way, it shows that these animals are showing changes to work around the light from the city.

Integrity has its price, one Yoseph has already paid at the hands of jealous brothers and his master's wife. In the 1970s and 1980s, the political solidarity committee “kämpfendes afrika” (fighting africa) in Zurich engaged in the support for African liberation movements. Its archives of papers, images and sound recordings are today housed at the Basler Afrika Bibliographien. The extracts of a recording presented here document an event of the “ka” on 1st March 1980 in the Zurich Volkshaus. Mike Muendane and Vuyisile Dlova speak as representatives of the South African liberation movement Pan Africanist Congress of Azania (PAC) to the audience. Barbara Müller from the “ka” translates their statements into German. Welcome back Wine and Dime listeners! We're very excited to have Dr. Barbara O'Neill back on the show. This time around we are going to be talking about her transition to self employment after 41 years of working at Rutgers. The new project that she has been working on is her new book, which is coming out very soon, called “Flipping A Switch: Your Guide to Happiness and Financial Security in Later Life (https://www.amazon.com/Flipping-Switch-Happiness-Financial-Security/dp/1620236869)”. We dive into several chapters and some very fun unique names! You have to listen in to hear some of that! So sit back, grab your favorite beverage and enjoy the show. And remember “Life is about events, supported by your dollars and cents”. Dr. Barbara M. O'NeillTWITTER - @moneytalk1 (https://twitter.com/moneytalk1) (https://www.amazon.com/Flipping-Switch-Happiness-Financial-Security/dp/1620236869)Leaving full-time employment to enter retirement often requires a 180-degree change in mindset and behavior from the way you managed your time and money previously. This is especially true for Baby Boomers who may have never experienced adult life without a full-time job and have been practicing the same habits since their 20s. These life transitions can be looked at as if they require flipping a switch. Some changes happen suddenly like an on/off switch, while others happen over time like a dimmer switch. Some switches are voluntary like spending accumulated savings, while some are mandatory like taking required minimum distributions starting at age 72. And to make matters more confusing, there are also lifestyle and social changes to consider as well. Flipping a Switch discusses 35 financial, lifestyle, and social transitions you'll encounter upon entering retirement, including: Full-time work to new pastimes Saving money to spending money Receiving a paycheck to creating a paycheck Funding retirement savings plans to taking required minimum distribution withdrawals Accumulating possessions to downsizing Everyone has unique switches to flip. Flipping a Switch: Your Guide to Happiness and Financial Security in Later Life offers important information and guidance new retirees need before undertaking their new life. Each chapter includes a How to Flip This Switch section with suggested action steps. In this special episode, we recorded a live-panel, discussing the 30th anniversary of German Unity. Please excuse the audio quality, which is at times fluctuating in volume. Such is the nature of live events. Barbara Müller, The Honorary Consul of the Federal Republic of Germany, invited guests to a panel discussion, revisiting the Mauerfall (Fall of the Wall), what it meant for the Germans, East and West, and whether the "new normal" was all that it could have been. On the panel: Barbara Mueller, JD, Honorary Consul, Federal Republic of Germany Verena Walther, JD, Attorney Janke Agusch, German Teacher at the GAI Dr. Henning Schroeder, University of Minnesota What ensued was a lively and at times passionate discussion that covers the moment the border opened, up to what it really meant for Germans on each side of the wall. ### Since 1957 The Germanic American Institute has been building cultural bridges between the American Midwest and German-speaking European countries. We cordially invite you on the inside, to join us as we share insights into German grammar, the German cultural experience, we’ll look at current topics, and we’ll let you know about all the events that we are involved in, and you can participate in. If you'd like us to answer any questions you may have about our content, history, grammar, etc. please email us at: language@gai-mn.org and we'll include your request in the next episode.

The guys started the show with some general chit chat about The Beer Store and [The Nail Shop](http://www.yelp.com/biz/the-nail-shop-omaha), the [Beach Boys](http://www.thebeachboys.com/), including "[Pet Sounds](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pet_Sounds)", Chuck Berry, [Bed Bad Baaaaaaatz](http://badbatz.tumblr.com/), Don's [Etymotic hf5 earphones](http://www.etymotic.com/ephp/hf5.html), Twitter, (including [this discussion](https://twitter.com/bugcounter/status/373254508580573184)), and [Barbara M. O'Neill](http://njaes.rutgers.edu/personnel/individual.asp?id%3D416)'s great work. Prompted by a [link](http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-2398775/30-C-laundry-cycles-breed-bacteria-transfer-germs-underwear-tea-towels.html) from Alejandro Amezquita the guys then turned their attention to laundry and in the process gave the phrase "Eat My Shorts!"meaning. In the article, [Lisa Ackerley](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lisa_Ackerley) discussed the hygiene of laundering. The guys recalled a couple of research articles by Chuck Gerba related to the topic ([here](http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/0043135491900969) and [here](http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0163445301908527)). Neither Don nor Ben were particularly worried about this. This reminded Ben of [The Salt article](http://www.npr.org/blogs/thesalt/2013/08/25/214799882/dishwasher-cooking-make-your-dinner-while-cleaning-the-plates) on cooking food in the dishwasher. The guys discussed the potential risk of this approach and the sciences that is needed. Another [The Salt article on washing poultry had also resulted in a large amount of social media engagement, which is something the Don and Ben are always keen to explore. And both enjoyed Alton Brown's proper method for washing out th inside of a whole poultry. The guys then moved onto the bug trivia replacement segment called Food Safety History, in honour of a 100 years of the IAFP Journal of Food Protection. In this episode the Don covered the [pre 1940 era](http://www.foodprotection.org/100years/articles/100-yrs-of-iafp-pre-1940.pdf). Don then wanted to talk about this [NY Times article](http://www.nytimes.com/2013/08/28/world/asia/farmers-change-over-spices-link-to-food-ills.html), related to *Salmonella* in spices, and the related [Food Microbiology article](http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0740002012002171). Don posed Ben the questions that he was asked for a Q&A based Rutgers media release on this topic and the guys compared their answers. The guys then got fired up about the [Cronut Burger related outbreak article by [Jason Tetro](http://www.foodsafetynews.com/author/jtetro/#.UidMtBabS0s). Ben didn't quite agree with some of Jason's assumptions, so Ben queried the manufacturers about the parameters of the product, which [Le Dolci didn't know](https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid%3D10153155762045720&id%3D305381935719).
