Are you ready to do it afraid? On today's show, be encouraged to face the fear in your life, knowing that God is always with you.
As we move into a new year, Alyson and I explore one of the most important skills of our time: discernment. In a world saturated with noise, manipulation, and endless information streams, this conversation is about reconnecting with what actually feels true—in your body, your heart, and your lived experience. We talk about why the traditional calendar feels increasingly out of sync with natural rhythms, and how ancient systems rooted in the sun, moon, and seasons offer a deeper sense of alignment. From there, we unpack how modern technology, media, and algorithm-driven platforms hijack attention, overstimulate the nervous system, and subtly pull us away from our inner guidance—often without us even realizing it.Alyson shares the practices that anchor her back into truth, including prayer, sacred fire, drumming, plant medicines, and daily rituals that reconnect her to Earth and spirit. We also get into the medicine of imperfection—why releasing the pressure to be flawless is essential for real growth, compassion, and humility, especially for those walking spiritual paths.Along the way, we reflect on unity versus division, the importance of nature as a reality check, and how fear-based operating systems can quietly shape our lives until we consciously choose something else. There's also a memorable (and cautionary) story involving incense, firemen, and a very unexpected lesson in presence. If you've been feeling disoriented, overstimulated, or unsure what to trust lately, this episode offers grounded reminders, practical anchors, and a powerful invitation to reclaim your own inner compass.Get the Animal Power book and deck, plus a free guided drumming shamanic journey to meet your power animal, at alysoncharles.com/animalpower.DISCLAIMER: This podcast is for educational purposes only and not intended for diagnosing or treating illnesses. Read Online“Let us cross to the other side.” Leaving the crowd, they took Jesus with them in the boat just as he was. And other boats were with him. A violent squall came up and waves were breaking over the boat, so that it was already filling up. Jesus was in the stern, asleep on a cushion. Mark 4:35–38Our Lord's words were prophetic, but so were His actions. Today's Gospel begins after a long day of Jesus teaching parables to the people by the Sea of Galilee. One might think that, after a long day, Jesus and His disciples would have remained in Capernaum for the night, getting a good night's sleep. Instead, Jesus invites His disciples to join Him for a long night on a boat, crossing to the other side of the sea to the territory of the Gerasenes. The Gerasenes were a predominantly Gentile population living in a region that formed part of the Decapolis—a group of ten cities heavily influenced by Greco-Roman culture and pagan practices. The area was culturally distinct from the Jewish territories around the Sea of Galilee, characterized by its Hellenistic architecture, customs, and beliefs. Jesus' invitation to cross the sea was not only an invitation to a long night, but also an invitation to spend the next day within a culturally distinct and perhaps an uneasy setting different from their Jewish hometown. This dual invitation should be seen as a prophetic action by which Jesus invited His disciples—and us—to leave our comfort zone and travel into the challenging and unfamiliar. This lesson has numerous practical implications for our lives. There are many things we do not feel like doing and many ways God calls us out of our comfort zone into the unfamiliar. Fear must never deter us from answering the call, even when we are tired and prefer to rest. When God calls, we must respond. The journey across the Sea of Galilee is also packed with prophetic lessons. The journey by boat from Capernaum to the territory of the Gerasenes was about five to six miles. Under calm conditions, the journey might have taken one to two hours. However, the storm likely extended this time, possibly making the trip several hours long, especially if the disciples had to work against the wind and waves. One important aspect of the journey is that Jesus is asleep during the storm. Because it would have been difficult for anyone to sleep while “waves were breaking over the boat, so that it was already filling up,” we should see our Lord's sleep as intentional, to reveal a spiritual lesson. Though God might seem distant at times, or asleep during our time of need, He is there, waiting for us to turn to Him, wake Him, and call on Him.Though these were experienced fishermen and boatmen, they were terrified. Jesus permitted them to experience this terror to reveal their need for faith and trust in Him. His calm presence, even as He slept, was a reminder that no storm—whether physical or spiritual—can overpower the One who created the seas. His rebuke of the wind and waves, “Quiet! Be still!” not only restored peace to the sea but also revealed His divine authority, revealing Himself as God: “LORD, God of hosts, who is like you? Mighty LORD, your faithfulness surrounds you. You rule the raging sea; you still its swelling waves” (Psalm 89:9–10).Reflect today on Jesus' invitation to the disciples to make the journey across the sea after a tiring day. Similarly, God sometimes calls us to enter the chaos of this world to bring His grace where it is not found. Though rest is important, sometimes we must deny ourselves and enter into the sea toward the unfamiliar—reaching out to neighbors or others with whom we feel hesitant, volunteering in ministries, or embracing new challenges that call us out of our comfort zone. As you ponder this scene, let the words of Christ echo in your heart, bringing peace to your soul: “Quiet! Be still!” Do not fear. Have faith. Trust that His command will calm every storm, and hold on to the knowledge that He is always with you, guiding you safely to the other side.All-powerful God, in Your human nature, You faced every difficulty and conquered them so that You could provide me the grace to do the same. When You call me out of my comfort zone into the unfamiliar, give me courage to respond generously, knowing that You are always nearby, waiting to be awakened through a prayer and act of faith. A month full of dealing with fear and determining who to be. In this release from the patreon stream, we talk about the terrors of time when you have a traumatized brain. Inconsistency, lapses, wormholes and sandtraps... we live in temporal funhouses. Let's talk about how an unstandard relationship with time affects our relationships and what to do about it.
God has given us to power to overcome our fears. We don't have a spirit of fear, we possess the Holy Spirit, which enables us to face life with the confidence that the Lord is with us in every situation. Main Points:1. Fear goes by many names. Perhaps in your life fear manifests itself as worry, anxiety, dread, concern, apprehension, nervousness, panic, or timidity. Regardless of the label, we give the emotion, its root is deep in fear.2. The first step in overcoming fear is to recognize that it is not from God. God does not want us to be afraid. Rather, God has given us three gifts: power, love, and a sound mind. 3. Bible scholars tell us that over 300 times the Word of God commands us to not be afraid. It's the most repeated command in scripture. I think the frequency of this command is telling us something. God knows our predominant negative emotion would be fear and this fear would keep us from being who He created us to be. Today's Scripture Verses:2 Timothy 1:7 - “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”Isaiah 41:10 - “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Quick Links:Donate to support this podcastLeave a review on Apple PodcastsGet a copy of The 5 Minute Discipleship JournalConnect on SocialJoin The 5 Minute Discipleship Facebook Group

Jack is joined by Gavin to reflect on the joys of European football and ask why Tottenham aren't more loud and proud about their pedigree in continental competition. We discuss the bizarre duality of the current season: finishing in the top 4 of the Champions League phase, yet languishing in the bottom half of the Premier League with the threat of relegation breathing down our necks. Does the European success buy Thomas Frank more time, or is his number up regardless of our continental adventures? The pair also discuss the ownership, looking for any clues in their recent behaviour, before answering your questions. Topics covered include whether it is now compulsory for the Spurs transfer committee to prioritise "old hard men" over technical footballers, and we finish on a lighter note with a chat about our favourite non-alcoholic drinks. For the second part of our Delphine Seyrig Acteurist Spotlight we disregarded chronology to discuss two intensely experimental Marguerite Duras films, India Song (1975) and Baxter, Vera Baxter (1977). We enumerate Duras' peculiarities as a writer and filmmaker and their effects in these studies of sexual and existential crisis, set against the backdrop of European colonialism and the second-wave feminist movement, respectively; and consider the range of qualities Seyrig brings to them, from ghoulish abstraction to salutary warmth. Fear-based learning can intensify pain in people with IBD even when inflammation is no longer active, showing that emotional processing plays a major role in chronic symptoms IBD patients in remission reported significantly higher pain intensity and unpleasantness compared to healthy individuals, despite experiencing the exact same heat stimulus The brain can hold onto pain memories through a process called fear conditioning, which teaches the nervous system to expect discomfort even without a current physical trigger People with IBD often feel isolated and emotionally overwhelmed due to unpredictable flare-ups, brain fog, shame, and the invisible nature of their pain Therapies like cognitive behavioral therapy offer a promising path to reduce pain by addressing the brain's learned fear responses
The Minnesota governor warns of a national unraveling and shares the view from his state. “ The way you win this is through nonviolence, that you cannot do violence,” Governor Tim Walz told the Atlantic staff writer Isaac Stanley-Becker in Minneapolis on Wednesday. “And I know my constituents are mad at me for saying that. They're shooting us. They're killing us. They're beating us. They're taking our children. But you see what's happening now. For all that power and all that cruelty, they are retreating massively. Now, I believe they'll only retreat far enough to get to the next day or the next news cycle. But again, they underestimated this state, and I think they're underestimating the American people. I'm still baffled—if you were gonna pick two states to mess with, Maine and Minnesota, especially in the middle of winter, not smart.” - - - Get more from your favorite Atlantic voices when you subscribe. Things Discussed: Nebraska: Nearly won that game shorthanded. Got great performances from replacements but ran their starters into the ground. Craig's analysis: Hoiberg decided to play some football. Steamroller screens and the like. Nebraska just made contested threes in the first half that they missed in the second half. Sam Hoiberg is straight up good: understands basketball, understands how to organize a team, understands how to get the ball to his guys. Second half Michigan did press the press the edges a little tighter. Kenpom tracks 2 point distance. We're thrilled. Seth: The most important stats in basketball are two-point defense and two-point offense, and the most important component of two point percentage is distance from the rim. Michigan wins these games because they get to the rim better than anybody and push you away from the rim better than anybody. Hoiberg knew he had to shoot to win, but also drew up some excellent sets to get free twos when he needed them. Shout-out to Nebraska's Max Bredeson kickout and form tackling. Hoiberg messed so well with Michigan's switches: They want to switch one to four, and they want to leave Mara available to put his hand in the way at the rim. Nebraska's response was to run these double screens—the Rip Hamilton way—to get cracks open for their shooters, but that contributed to their shooters getting tired in the 2nd half. Turnovers: some are baked in, unforced. This game additionally had ref show turnovers but they're going to take chances to get to the rim because that's what's so important to them. MSU preview: They're such a Big Ten team. They can get around M's two-point defense because they shoot assisted other twos and those are good enough shots opposite the #1 defense. They get after you (not the ball: they jump on your back) on the boards. Kohler has really turned himself into a shooter, might be an NBA player. Fears was terrible early in the season but now he's an excellent guard. Gets after it (and you) on defense, isn't a great shooter but can find pockets to pass into and draws a ton of fouls then makes his FTs. Coen Carr = Brent Petway! MSU is going to play dirty. Nobody in the country gets better calls at home, and they are going to use that strategically. Expect them to be mauling Mara to deny paint touches, expect Cooper to have his arm wrapped on Rez and pulling him down. All the gritty trick that define Izzo teams. What's with Yax? Think he's drawing more defensive attention and that's creating more for Morez Johnson. That's a credit to Dusty May: when he built this roster he built in answers for everything you want to do to them. Credit to Trey McKenney. He's become the 6th man, because he will come in and give you whatever you need right then. Defense? He's big and athletic. Need to hit some free throws (vs OSU, or the three at the Under-8 timeout?) he's got you. Missing your threes, he'll knock down a pair.
John Jay vs. the Mob reveals why the rule of law is the foundation that keeps a republic from collapsing into chaos. When mobs decide which laws apply, liberty does not expand, it disappears. This episode of America's Founding Series tells the gripping story of John Jay, a Founding Father who understood that freedom is threatened not only by tyrants, but by organized mobs that reject the legitimacy of law itself. From the streets of 18th-century New York to the unrest unfolding today in Minnesota, this episode explores how mob rule, selective enforcement, and fear of public pressure endanger the Republic. John Jay's life offers a warning that is more relevant now than ever. What You'll Learn in This Episode Why John Jay believed unchecked mobs were just as dangerous as kings How the 1788 New York riot shaped Jay's understanding of liberty and order What the Federalist Papers reveal about restraining all forms of power Why selective law enforcement undermines constitutional government How modern unrest echoes the same threat Jay warned about centuries ago

What should parents do when public figures stir strong reactions, confusion, anger, fear, or frustration? In this episode of Facing the Dark, Wayne Stender and Dr. Kathy Koch explore a real world case from England where a teacher faced disciplinary action after showing political footage to older teens. Rather than taking a political stance, the conversation turns to a deeper parenting question: should teenagers be introduced to people and ideas that feel troubling or controversial? Dr. Kathy explains why shielding kids from difficult figures doesn't build maturity, but guided exposure does. Together, they unpack how discernment is formed through conversation, curiosity, humility, and relationship, not avoidance. Parents are encouraged to acknowledge what their kids already see, name emotional reactions honestly, and walk with them through anxiety or confusion when it arises. The episode also highlights the importance of parents modeling learning, sharing the books and thinkers that shape their own views, and explaining how they evaluate what's worth listening to. Grounded in Daniel 1, this conversation reminds families that God often forms wisdom not by isolation, but by engagement paired with conviction. When teens are given scaffolding instead of silence, they grow confident in their ability to think critically and live faithfully in a complex world.
Mindfulness is often recommended for OCD and anxiety — but for many people, it doesn't work the way they were told it would. In this episode of The Restored Minds Show, licensed therapist Matt Codde, LCSW explains why mindfulness fails for OCD and anxiety disorders when it's misused — and how it actually fits into real recovery. If you've tried mindfulness, meditation, or grounding techniques and felt frustrated, guilty, or like you “failed,” this episode will help you understand what really went wrong — and why it wasn't you.Rather than seeing fear, intrusive thoughts, or anxiety as problems to eliminate, Matt explains how misunderstanding the role of mindfulness often turns it into a distraction, a coping strategy, or another form of avoidance — which keeps the anxiety loop going.

The dust has settled on the Manchester United defeat, but the questions are only getting louder. Jacob Hawley is joined by Johnny Dutch to move past the raw emotion of losing to a bitter rival and dissect the psychological state of the squad. They ask if the obsession with control has gone too far and if the ghosts of seasons past are haunting the tactical setup. On the deck: The £60m Dilemma: We drop a controversial take on Eberechi Eze's future. Is he a “maverick” unsuited for a dominant system, and have we already seen enough to know he isn't the answer? PTSD Football: A deep dive into whether Mikel Arteta is “coaching by trauma”—designing a system so terrified of making mistakes that it has forgotten how to take risks. The Captain's Fade: Why Martin Odegaard has become the lightning rod for fan frustration. We debate if it's a physical decline, a confidence crisis, or simply a player handcuffed by rigid instructions. Stumbling Into Solutions: History shows Arteta often finds his best attacking setups by accident. We argue why it's time to force the issue with Merino up top and bring Ben White back to unlock Saka. The League of Margins: Why the Premier League has morphed into “90s Serie A” and why a data-driven, risk-averse approach might not be enough to get over the line. What does it mean to bring home a child whose breathing depends on a piece of medical equipment? For many families, the idea of a trach is terrifying long before it ever becomes reality. And even after, the fear doesn't magically disappear. In this episode of The Rare Life, Alyssa is joined by Ashley Caywood to talk honestly about life with a trach and ventilator. We hear from parents who knew this decision was coming and from others who were blindsided by it, from families who hoped it would be temporary and those who've had to come to terms with permanence. We talk about hypervigilance, sleep deprivation, the impossible responsibility of keeping your child breathing at home, and the strange duality of fear and gratitude that so many trach parents carry at the same time.If you're facing trach conversations now, living with one already, or trying to understand what this life actually looks like beyond the hospital walls, this episode offers realism, validation, and the reminder that you're not alone in holding all of this.Thank you to the generous sponsors for today's episode, Imagine Pediatrics. And don't forget to join us on Feb 1st to kick off our FUEL The Rare Life fundraiser!Links: Learn more about Imagine Pediatrics.Listen to Ep 139: In-Home Nursing.Listen to Ep 90: Living with Sleep Deprivation.Join The Rare Life newsletter andnever miss an update!Fill out our contact form to joinupcoming discussion groups!Follow us on Instagram @the_rare_life!Donateto the podcast or Contactme about sponsoring an episode.Follow the Facebook page. Pleasing God over people is a tension every believer faces. This Christian devotional explores the difference between people-pleasing and God-honoring obedience, drawing wisdom from Ecclesiastes 3:1–2 and the life of Jesus. True biblical love is not rooted in appeasement or fear of conflict, but in discerning when to speak truth, when to remain silent, and when obedience to God requires courage over comfort. Highlights People-pleasing and peace-making are not always the same Biblical love values truth over appeasement There is a God-appointed time to speak and a time to remain silent Jesus modeled courage, truth, and discernment in every situation Fear of man can prevent growth and obedience God equips believers with the right words when we trust Him Pleasing God sometimes requires speaking up, not staying quiet Do you want to listen ad-free? Yet, I also knew if I said, "You're right," I'd be lying. In reality, there is a difference between people-pleasing and peace-making. They are not always one and the same. In the past, I'd be inclined to lie to keep the peace. I'd be inclined to brush things under the carpet of don't-lift-up-the-corner-of-this-rug for anything—to keep everyone happy. I'd be inclined to adapt to make sure everyone is okay. This is not biblical love, but it verges more towards manipulative love. Appeasing man is not always the same as pleasing the Lord. We must be careful here. There is a time for everything under the sun. “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens:a time to be born and a time to die,a time to plant and a time to uproot…” (Eccl. 3:1-2) There is a time to speak truth and a time to be quiet. There is a time to bring clarity and a time to listen. There is a time to defend and a time to back off. There is a time to pray, and there is a time to say things. Jesus didn't always back away; sometimes He spoke truth. He called out the Pharisees and told them the truth when they fought Him (Matt. 23:27-28). He said, "Forgive them" aloud when He was being crucified (Luke 23:34). He addressed the Pharisees' lack of mercy with a straightforward address (Matt. 23:23). He powerfully used His words and actions to drive the merchants out of the temple (Matt. 21:12-13). The list goes on and on... Jesus did not always stay silent. To turn the other cheek does not always mean taking it... There is a time to speak up. There is a time to not fear man. There is a time to tell the truth. The key is to pray and discern what God would have you do (Eph. 5:17). Sometimes things never change because we never change our approach. Sometimes ruts continue because we don't trust God to equip us with the right words. Sometimes habits continue because we fear man more than we believe God will help us. Don't mistake fear of man for fear of the Lord. The Lord may have you speak up louder than the fear of man has ever permitted you to. This is not unbiblical; it may be monumental in your walk with the Lord. The answer is not always silence. Sometimes the way that most pleases God is speaking up. Wisdom is knowing the difference. Lying is sinning, even if it is pursuing peace-making. The question is—how do we be true, while being godly and loving? Sometimes, this requires pausing to seek God for what needs to be said. Other times, it may require praying to get a couple of levels deeper than what is on the surface. The ultimate key is to respond to a person from God's will and not to react from our own. Today's Promise: Every day you wake up in a spiritual battlefield. Fear, doubt, shame, and relentless accusations bombard your mind. Today's episode speaks directly into that spiritual fight with a powerful promise from Isaiah 54:17: "No weapon formed against you will prosper." This episode is a call to stand firm, lift your head, and walk in confidence, knowing the Lord Himself stands between you and the enemy. You are not defenseless. You are covered. And today, every weapon aimed at you will fail.
From a SAND Community Gathering (December 2025), Francis Weller joins SAND co-founders Zaya and Maurizio Benazzo for a wide-ranging conversation on grief, initiation, and the sacred thresholds of a changing world. They speak of rough passages and necessary descents—of what must burn away, and what endures. With Francis's steady guidance, sorrow, longing, beauty, and vulnerability are reclaimed not as weaknesses, but as profound sources of strength, orientation, and soul knowledge. Rooted in the soulcraft teachings of his book In the Absence of the Ordinary, the dialogue unfolds in a spirit of reverence and remembrance. Together, they explore the unraveling of the familiar as an invitation into deeper belonging—grief as a living portal, and beauty as a practice of staying close to what is sacred, even in times of descent. Are we wrapping the cross in a flag? How far can party and country go before our Christianity must say “stop”? Craig sits down with April Ajoy, author of Star-Spangled Jesus and co-host of The Tim and April Show, to talk about growing up inside Christian nationalism and learning to follow Jesus instead of the party line. The point is not to chase outrage, but to measure all power by the words of Jesus. God first, always. They cover flags in church, fear-based politics, and the quiet shift from “this is my conviction” to “the state should enforce my conviction.” Craig urges us to stop outsourcing love to Caesar and get back to simple, neighbor-first faith that looks like the Sermon on the Mount. If you feel the tug between cross and country, this conversation gives language, laughter, and a clean path forward, to put Jesus over team, platform, and flag. Their conversation digs into: How “good Christians” get discipled by politics without noticing Flags in the sanctuary and what symbols preach Humor as healing: naming the “Jesus juke” Propaganda, fear, and why panic feels like faith Coercion vs. consent: the Kingdom's way of love Threads vs. tables: why face-to-face changes hearts A simple test for allegiance: cross over party, Jesus over nation
Episode Summary: In this episode, we explore the powerful theme of fear from a biblical perspective, specifically tailored for the unique challenges faced by single mothers. Drawing from the first day of the devotional, "Courage to Believe: 21 Day Devotional for Single Moms," we discuss how fear can impact our decisions and how to find peace by trusting in God's promises.Key Takeaways:Acknowledge Your Emotions: Recognizing and naming specific fears (scarcity, rejection, loss) can help you manage your response and create healthy distance from the emotion.Trust vs. Control: Relying on our own strength alone can lead to compromising our values; trusting God means waiting on His timing and provision. The Power of Scriptural Affirmation: Regularly speaking God's promises, such as Isaiah 41:10, can transform your mindset from one of fear to one of peace and strength.God as Your Comforter: Just as a parent comforts a child, God provides real assurance and strength, even when our circumstances feel overwhelming.Episode Breakdown:0:00 - Introduction to the Solo Mom JourneyA warm welcome to the Solo Moms community. We acknowledge the overwhelming nature of fear and introduce the purpose of today's devotional: finding courage in the midst of life's messiest emotions.1:55 - Today's Bible Verse: Isaiah 41:10A focused reading of Isaiah 41:10, highlighting God's promise to be with us, strengthen us, and uphold us with His righteous right hand.2:18 - Illustration: Fear's Impact on Our ChoicesMy personal reflection on how fear—specifically the fear of being unable to provide—can lead to making compromises we wouldn't otherwise choose. Fear shows up in many forms—panic attacks, self-doubt, trauma responses, or everyday anxiety. In this episode of Ask Dr. E, Dr. Michael Easley responds to a listener's honest question: What is the best way for believers to overcome fear? Dr. Easley offers a thoughtful, biblically grounded response that acknowledges the complexity of fear. Some fear requires professional counseling. Some fear is rooted in trauma. And some fear must be confronted through renewed thinking shaped by Scripture. These approaches aren't in conflict—they work together. Drawing from passages like Joshua 1, Romans 12, and Psalm 27, Dr. Easley reminds us that God commands courage not because we are strong—but because we are often weak and afraid. Fear is not a failure of faith; it is a shared human condition. And God meets us there. This episode offers clarity, compassion, and practical steps for believers who want real help—not clichés—when fear feels overwhelming. And there Isaac's servants dug a well.”- Genesis 26:23-25 ESV
