    More than 2,000 marine scientists have come together at the One Ocean Science Congress in Nice, France. It is a gathering that will bring marine experts from all over the world together to share the latest discoveries about the health of our seas and oceans. It is an issue at the centre of the world's attention, because from 9th June, leaders and negotiators from 200 countries will arrive in Nice for the crucial United Nations Conference on the Oceans (UNOC3). Presenter Victoria Gill is joined by Murray Roberts, Professor of Marine Biology at the University of Edinburgh to find out what is at stake when leaders come together to work out a global plan to save our oceans from multiple threats, including climate change, pollution and overfishing. Professor Amanda Vincent from the University of British Columbia in Canada joins the Inside Science team to reveal her insights into the destruction caused by the controversial fishing practice of bottom trawling, which she explains is devastating marine life. Victoria also joins a team of acoustic marine scientists on their research boat the “We Explore” off the coast of Nice to listen for whales and dolphins under the surface. Their sound recordings reveal how animals of different species eavesdrop on each other and how to stop boat noise from drowning out whale communication. We also meet a team from a charity in Plymouth that is helping people who are living with poor mental health by prescribing ocean-based activities.     The language from European leaders was fawning and obsequious. At one point, the head of Nato, Mark Rutte, even called Donald Trump “daddy”. But when the US president left the Nato summit in late June, there was a sigh of relief that he had not made any more angry criticism of the alliance. And after months of American pressure, Nato members agreed to increase their spending on defence to 5% of GDP by 2035.  So how did Europe become so unable to defend itself that it was forced to resort to outright flattery of an American president?In this episode, we report from the recent Siena Conference on the Europe of the Future in Italy about how the EU dropped the ball on its own defence and what its options are now. She landed a fairly significant job - one she didn't think she was quite ready for (thank goodness for positive mentors) before she decided culinary school in France was the next move for her. She was 100% positive a job in a fine dining restaurant was going to be the ultimate for her, but turns out, she couldn't leave fast enough. Renee talks about the opportunities that came her way, the huge responsibility she carries as a chef to make sure she's putting the right food message out in the world, and her latest adventure with Uncle Harry Hamlin - in the kitchen cooking together (episodes streaming on AMC+). La veille, on apprenait qu'un journaliste français spécialisé dans le football, Christophe Gleizes, était, lui, condamné à 7 ans de prison pour "apologie du terrorisme", et "possession de publications dans un but de propagande nuisant à l'intérêt national". Concernant Boualem Sansal, la France a appelé à une "grâce humanitaire", à travers la voix de la porte-parole du gouvernement Sophie Primas. Concernant la peine infligée à Christophe Gleizes, le ministère français des Affaires étrangères a indiqué regretter "vivement la lourde condamnation à une peine de sept ans de prison ferme du journaliste ".Ces condamnations interviennent dans une séquence diplomatique tendue entre Paris et Alger, notamment depuis que le président Macron a acté la "reconnaissance" par la France de "la souveraineté marocaine sur le Sahara occidental".     À quoi sert le mépris de classe ? Faut-il quitter ostensiblement le dance floor quand le DJ met du Sardou ? Que cherchons-nous à dire aux autres quand nous exhibons nos vinyles de David Bowie ? Pourquoi faut-il attendre la reprise de Juliette Armanet pour pouvoir danser sur “Partir un jour” des 2be3 sans avoir peur de passer pour un gros beauf ? Est-ce vraiment si cool de porter un T-shirt Johnny Hallyday au “second degré” ? En quoi aimer Dalida serait-il un plaisir coupable ? Pour l'autrice Rose Lamy toutes ces questions de goûts musicaux sont aussi des questions politiques. Dans son livre, Ascendant beauf, elle évoque son enfance en zone pavillonnaire à Bourges, où elle a grandi avec les tubes du Top 50 et les soirées en salle des fêtes. Tiraillée entre son goût pour les chansons populaires et la culture scolaire, elle réfléchit aux rouages de la distinction sociale et s'attaque au mythe du beauf. Car, pour Rose Lamy, le mépris culturel qui s'exerce envers les « beaufs » ou ses avatars contemporains comme le téléspectateur de Cyril Hanouna n'a rien d'anodin. Il s'inscrit dans un continuum de violences de classe, que chacun.e entretient ou subit tour à tour, sans toujours en mesurer les implications. Les effets que ça peut avoir sur nos trajectoires sociales, les relations avec notre milieu d'origine, mais aussi, de loin en loin, sur notre bulletin de vote.     America is turning 250. And we're throwing a yearlong celebration of the greatest country on Earth. The greatest? Yes. The greatest. We realize that's not a popular thing to say these days. Americans have a way of taking this country for granted: a Gallup poll released earlier this week shows that American pride has reached a new low. And the world at large, which is wealthier and freer than it has ever been in history thanks to American power and largesse, often resents us. We get it. As journalists, we spend most of our time finding problems and exposing them. It's what the job calls for. But if you only focus on the negatives, you get a distorted view of reality. As America hits this milestone birthday, it's worthwhile to take a moment to step back and look closely at where we actually are—and the reality of life in America today compared to other times and places. That reality is pretty spectacular. Could Thomas Jefferson and the men gathered in Philadelphia who wrote down the words that made our world—“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness”—ever have imagined what their Declaration of Independence would bring? The Constitution. The end of slavery—and the defeat of Hitler. Astonishing wealth and medical breakthroughs. Silicon Valley. The most powerful military in the world. The moon landing. Hollywood. The Hoover Dam. The Statue of Liberty (a gift from France). Actual liberation (a thing we gave France). Humphrey Bogart and Tom Hanks. Josephine Baker and Beyoncé. Hot dogs. Corn dogs. American Chinese food. American Italian food. The Roosevelts and the Kennedys. The Barrymores and the Fondas. Winston Churchill (his mom was from Brooklyn). The Marshall Plan and Thurgood Marshall. Star Wars. Missile-defense shields. Baseball. Football. The military-industrial complex. Freedom of religion. UFO cults. Television. The internet. The Pill. The Pope. The automobile, the airplane, and AI. Jazz and the blues. The polio vaccine and GLP-1s, the UFC and Dolly Parton. The list goes on because it's really, truly endless. Ours is a country where you can hear 800 languages spoken in Queens, drive two hours and end up among the Amish in Pennsylvania. We are 330 million people, from California to New York Island, gathered together as one. Each of those 330 million will tell you that ours is not a perfect country. But we suspect most of them would agree that their lives would not be possible without it. So for the next 12 months, we're going to toast to our freedoms on the page, on this podcast and in real life. And we're doing it the Free Press way: by delving into all of it—the bad and the good and the great, the strange and the wonderful and the wild. And today—on America's 249th birthday—we're kicking off this yearlong event with none other than Akhil Reed Amar. Akhil has a unique understanding of this country—and our Constitution. This episode focuses on the first half of the 112th Tour, which will take the riders from Lille in the north east, across to Normandy and Brittany before cutting down through the heart of France to the Massif Central. The head-to-head battle between Tadej Pogačar and Jonas Vingegaard is currently tied at 2-2, with the Slovenian winning in 2021 and 2024 and the Dane taking back-to-back victories in 2022 and 2023. But, as closely-matched as they often seem, none of those four clashes has been particularly close and, as we saw at the Dauphiné last month, Pogačar seems to have the upper hand at the moment. I don't know about you, but I am absolutely frothing for this year's race to kick off. My heart is racing just thinking about it…and that's exactly what this month's episode is all about; my heart. Guys, this month's episode of Life In The Peloton is one for all you training geeks out there. It's time for me to take another look ‘under the hood' and get my ticker checked out, so I headed back to the lab for a catch up with my old mate Dr. Andre Le Gerche. If you don't recognise that name, Andre is one of the world's leading experts in Sports Cardiology, whose research and clinical work focuses on the effect of exercise on the human heart.  Since the start of my professional cycling career all those years ago, I've been seeing Andre every few years to take part in a study he's conducting on elite athletes' hearts, heart function, and heart health. I last recorded with Andre back in 2022, so if you haven't heard that ep get across and bring yourself up to speed on the study, and what my last round of testing showed just after I retired from Pro Cycling. If you don't know, the UCI makes sure that every pro rider undergoes a series of heart tests on their heart every off season ‘with an aim to reduce - as far as possible - the risk of sudden cardiac death during sporting activity' - scary stuff, right? Andre's study goes one further, looking to understand the longer term effects of a life of endurance sport.  I won't lie, guys, this is a big topic - and I won't pretend I'm an expert on Sports Cardiology! But, what I really love about working with Andre and his team is the way they explain the results of their findings to nuffies like me. I hope you like this episode, guys - hopefully, you get a better idea of what goes on under the hood of these elite athletes you're about to watch rip around France for the next month.
