This month we are delighted to be joined by Andrea Brock, who is a political ecologist at University of Sussex. Andrea works with forest defenders and environmental movements looking at the responses from state and corporate actors to ecological dissent. Andrea shares with us the trajectory of her research career which was influenced by being brought up in the German Rhineland in proximity to the world's largest open-cast lignite mine. She shares with us her insights into the actions of the mining company and the greenwashing acrobatics that are put in place to distract from the ecological destruction that is taking place as a result of these mining projects. She gives insight into the repression that had been levied against land defenders in the ancient Hambach Forest which has been under threat from mine operator RWE. In addition, the relationships between different types policing and ecocide are explored and how this influences the domination of non-human and human species. Her research is based in the European context and examines how the logics of repression play out and ecological defenders are criminalized in Europe. It was the greatest case of match-fixing in international sports. A group of criminals fixed soccer, basketball, handball, volleyball, tennis and many other sports. They corrupted national teams, the UEFA Champions League, and games around the world. They had top officials, referees and players on their payroll. They threatened, extorted and murdered their way through sports. At the heart of the investigation against them was one dedicated, obsessive cop. A man who would stop at nothing to bring down. This is his story. Please rate, review or like this episode: would be hugely appreciated by Declan and the whole team of students. www.crimewavespodcast.comwww.declanhill.comTwitter: declan_hill

On May 22nd, 2019 Oisín Osborn was shot dead in Hamburg in his own home by German police, 10 days after he had become a father. On that fateful morning, his schoolteacher wife Nicole had called the police saying her husband had a knife, and within minutes armed police officers in protective gear burst into their home, raced up the stairs and shot the 34-year-old man dead on the landing. Osborn, who was an engineer at Airbus, was clearly in mental distress – he was standing at the top of the stairs, wearing only a loincloth, with a saucepan on his head. He was shot six times.Did the police use excessive force? The police investigation has judged the event as self-defence. The family say they still have so many unanswered questions. Irish Times journalist Derek Scally has been following the story since that day, and following Osborn's parents as they try to find answers. He explains the background and the questions it poses for policing in Germany. Presented by Bernice Harrison. Produced by John Casey. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Germany has arrested a number of people including a prince for planning a U-S Capitol building style attack on Parliament and overthrowing the government in a coup. More than 3,000 police officers took part in the raids which netted a total of 25 suspects in Germany, Austria and Italy.
German police conducted raids all across the country on Wednesday, making arrests, and attempting to dismantle a plot aimed at overthrowing the government. More than two dozen people suspected of plotting an armed coup have been arrested in raids carried out across Germany. The suspects are linked to a far-right extremist group and had allegedly begun preparations to carry out a plot that included storming the capitol and executing the chancellor. Heidi Beirich, co-founder of the Global Project Against Hate and Extremism, joins Amna Nawaz to discuss. PBS NewsHour is supported by - https://www.pbs.org/newshour/about/funders
German police have searched one hundred and thirty sites across the country and arrested twenty-five people on suspicions of plotting to overthrow the government. A number of those arrested or still under suspicion include former politicians, as well as former and active members of the German military. The group allegedly planned to forcibly storm the German Parliament building and sieze control, echoing a similar attempt in August of 2020. German correspondent Thomas Sparrow spoke to Corin Dann.
Thousands of police carried out a series of raids across much of Germany today against suspected far-right extremists who allegedly sought to overthrow the state by force. Federal prosecutors said some 3,000 officers conducted searches at 130 sites in 11 of Germany's 16 states against adherents of the so-called Reich Citizens movement. Some members of the grouping reject Germany's postwar constitution and have called for the overthrow of the government. Justice Minister Marco Buschmann described the raids as an “anti-terrorism operation,” adding that the suspects may have planned an armed attack on institutions of the state. Prosecutors said 22 German citizens were detained on suspicion of “membership in a terrorist organisation.” Three other people, including a Russian citizen, are suspected of supporting the organisation, they said. Weekly Der Spiegel reported that locations searched include the barracks of Germany's special forces unit KSK in the southwestern town of Calw. The unit has in the past been scrutinised over alleged far-right involvement by some soldiers. Federal prosecutors declined to confirm or deny that the barracks were searched. Along with detentions in Germany, prosecutors said that one person was detained in the Austrian town of Kitzbuehel and another in the Italian city of Perugia. Prosecutors said those detained are alleged to last year have formed a “terrorist organisation with the goal of overturning the existing state order in Germany and replace it with their own form of state, which was already in the course of being founded.” The suspects were aware that their aim could only be achieved by military means and with force, prosecutors said. They are alleged to have believed in a “conglomerate of conspiracy theories consisting of narratives from the so-called Reich Citizens as well as QAnon ideology,” according to a statement by prosecutors. They added that members of the group also believe Germany is ruled by a so-called ‘deep state;' similar baseless claims about the United States were made by former President Donald Trump. Prosecutors identified the suspected ringleaders as Heinrich XIII P. R. and Ruediger v. P., in line with German privacy rules. Der Spiegel reported that the former was a well-known 71-year-old member of a minor German noble family, while the latter was a 69-year-old former paratrooper. Federal prosecutors said Heinrich XIII P. R., whom the group planned to install as Germany's new leader, had contacted Russian officials with the aim of negotiating a new order in the country once the German government was overthrown. He was allegedly assisted in this by a Russian woman, Vitalia B. “According to current investigations there is no indication however that the persons contacted responded positively to his request,” prosecutors said. A further person detained by police Wednesday was identified by prosecutors as Birgit M.-W. Der Spiegel reported that the woman is a judge and former lawmaker with the far-right Alternative for Germany party. The party, known by its German acronym AfD, has increasingly come under scrutiny by German security services due to its ties with extremists.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This extraordinary story is a current live investigation. When a body was found floating in the North Sea in July 1994, it was German police who began an investigation – they learned that the man was in his 40's or 50's, smartly dressed, and he became known as ‘The Gentleman'. But despite extensive investigations, they couldn't identify him, and the man was buried in a un-named grave. Now – working with Locate International, the German Police are re-investigating. They believe that the clothes the man was wearing indicate he's likely to be British. This podcast is part of a major publicity drive to try and shed new light on the identity of The Gentleman. German police said Thursday they presume a British girl who went missing in southern Portugal 13 years ago is dead, but Madeleine McCann's parents still nurture hope their daughter will be found alive.McCann was 3 at the time of her disappearance from an apartment while her family vacationed in the seaside town of Praia da Luz, in Portugal’s Algarve region, in 2007.Police in Germany reported Wednesday they had identified a suspect, a 43-year-old German citizen currently imprisoned in his home country for a sexual crime. They did not name him.The suspect spent numerous years in Portugal, including in Praia da Luz around the time of McCann’s disappearance, and has two previous convictions for “sexual contact with girls.”Police in Portugal and the United Kingdom confirmed the new lead in the long-running case. They did not explain why, after so many years, suspicion had now fallen on the German man, who was registered in the German city of Braunschweig before he moved abroad..Hans Christian Wolters, a prosecutor in Braunschweig, Germany, told reporters the man is being investigated on suspicion of murder.“You can infer from that we assume the girl is dead,” Wolters said. The development, though grim, raised hopes that the mystery surrounding the case might finally be resolved. Authorities have never before given so much detailed information about any suspect during the years of investigating the child's disappearance, which received worldwide attention. Her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, said on their website www.findmadeleine.com that their hope of seeing their daughter again had not faded.“All we have ever wanted is to find her, uncover the truth and bring those responsible to justice,” the couple, who live in the U.K., wrote. “We will never give up hope of finding Madeleine alive but whatever the outcome may be, we need to know as we need to find peace.”Wolters, the prosecutor, wouldn’t give any other details of the suspect’s identity so as not to jeopardize the ongoing investigation.German police said the suspect, described as white with short, blond hair and a slim build, was linked to a camper van seen in Portugal’s Algarve region in 2007.Portuguese, British and German police appealed for the public’s help in building their case against the suspect, asking people if they remembered seeing him in or around Praia da Luz 13 years ago.Her parents say Madeleine disappeared after they left her and her twin siblings asleep in their holiday complex while they had dinner with friends at a nearby restaurant.Christian Hoppe of Germany’s Federal Criminal Police Office told German public broadcaster ZDF that police aren’t ruling out a sexual motive. He said whoever abducted the girl may have broken into the holiday apartment and then spontaneously committed the kidnapping.Hoppe said the suspect in the McCann case lived between Lagos and nearby Praia da Luz, and was regularly in the Algarve region from 1995 to 2007.The suspect’s description fits that of a 43-year-old man who was convicted in December of the 2005 rape of a 72-year-old American woman in her apartment in Portugal, local German newspaper Braunschweiger Zeitung reported. The newspaper said the physical description provided by German authorities and other details match the defendant in the 2005 rape attack, who recently was linked to the case by DNA.The suspect denied the charges during his trial and has appealed his conviction.According to a copy of the rape verdict sent by the court in response to an AP question about the suspect's December trial, his other convictions were for the sexual abuse of a child in 1994 and a case in 2016 when he was convicted of possessing child pornography. Other convictions include drug trafficking, burglary and weapons violations.Police from Britain, Germany and Portugal asked for anyone to come forward if they had seen two vehicles linked to the suspect -- a Volkswagen camper van and a Jaguar. They also sought informa...

Google is a company many of us rely on daily for everything from reading the news to navigating new places. It’s a big part of the modern world, and this week more disturbing evidence emerged showing the true face of this tech giant. In Germany, many are worried about where the allegiance of the country’s police and army lies. And they’re concerned about the growing support for a far-right party. Meanwhile, Iran is threatening to follow North Korea’s example—and go full nuclear. We also discuss India’s moves toward Russian alignment, a plan to oust Iran from Syria, Europe’s outreach to Russia, China’s conquest of Africa, and new laws regarding advertising in the UK. Hey everyone, welcome back to Bionic Bug podcast! You’re listening to episode 12. This is your host Natasha Bajema, fiction author, futurist, and national security expert. I’m recording this episode on July 8, 2018. First off, I have a personal update. Next week, I’m headed to New York City for ThrillerFest, which is the premiere conference for thriller enthusiasts, bringing together famous authors and new ones along with industry professionals, agents, and fans. This year, George R.R. Martin, author of Song of Ice and Fire, more popularly known as the HBO drama Game of Thrones will serve as the ThrillerMaster. I’m a huge fan of the books and the series and look forward to meeting him. I’ll also be meeting with agents to pitch the Lara Kingsley series in the hopes that I’m offered a publishing deal. More likely, my soul will be crushed and I’ll have to drink away my sorrows. Stay tuned for more information. If you’re enjoying the show, please leave a review on iTunes. You can also support my time and costs of producing in show for only a few dollars a month, please go to www.patreon.com- p a t r e o n / natashabajema Let’s talk tech. This week, I have two headlines for you, both are more funny than serious. “German Police Raid Augsburg Fablab, Confiscate 3D Printed “Atom Bomb” July 5 on all3DP.com On June 20, German Police raided a Fablab in Augsburg, Germany, where they confiscated a 3-inch tall 3D printed "Atom Bomb". Let me be clear this is a plastic model of the Fat Man implosion bomb from 1945. It is made of thermoplastic. It is the equivalent of a plastic toy. FabLabs are DIY lab spaces open to the local community. Anyone can join in and learn how to use 3D printers. FabLabs have sprung up around the world to encourage people to experiment with this new technology. This particular lab is located in Augsburg, Germany. The founder of the open lab and all individuals present during the raid were arrested for setting off explosive materials. They were later released. In a YouTube video, you can see some dudes launching the plastic model from a spring launcher, somewhat like a nerf launcher. They’re trying to launch it into an open vent. This incident demonstrates the difficulty of mitigating the risks of technology with broad accessibility. 3D printers can be used to make harmless, plastic toys, but they can also be used to make nefarious items such as guns, IEDs and more. Governments will face enormous challenges trying to police what individuals are now capable of doing within the privacy of their own homes. This story resonates with me because I bought a 3D printer about a year ago. And one of my first projects was an attempt to design a 3D model of the Fat Man bomb as a gimmick to promote a series of fiction books I was working on. I gave up trying to design a model myself because the available 3D modeling software was too difficult to use in just a few hours. Perhaps, I can just download their model and customize it. “Gene Editing: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO)” John Oliver did a stint about gene editing on July 1, which is hilarious and offers some good info about CRISPR and gene drives. It also features (makes fun of) my recent podcast guest, Dr. Josiah Zayner, who has expressed his amusement at making it onto John Oliver’s show. My favorite part is when Dr. George Church, a famous geneticist, is asked if it would be possible to create a unicorn. I think I nearly fell of my chair, laughing at the look on his face and his answer. It’s definitely worth a watch. Let’s turn to Bionic Bug. Last week, Lara visited the National Cryptologic Museum to meet with her mysterious stalker. Unfortunately, he was a no-show, but left a note and cut the fuel line on Lara’s motorcycle. In Chapter 12, Lara is with Detective Sanchez at the police station to meet with the medical examiner. Let’s find out what happens next.
[paypal-donation] Today, December 11, marks the 76th anniversary since Germany declared war on the United States. I'm sure that was a sobering time. Dr. David Conley Nelson has written a book, Moroni & the Swastika, that details how Germans, as well as the LDS Church reacted to the war. David has an interesting background. He not only flies as an airline pilot, but has a Ph.D. in history as well. He's got some really interesting insights on German LDS history. Did you know that the Whitmers, like David Whitmer and all those brothers that saw the Book of Mormon, spoke with German accents? David: Peter and Mary Whitmer both spoke English with a pronounced German accent. Mary Whitmer, the mother, was born in Germany. Peter was born in the United States. Before they were converted to Mormonism, they were members of a reformed congregation. Their first three children, their birth certificates are in German. There has been a lot of German spoken in the United States for a long time. There were official records in German language schools only up until about the First World War. GT: Here in the United States? David: Here in the United States, yes. GT: Oh wow. David: So yes it's not surprising that the Whitmers brought a lot of their German heritage with them and hung on to the language for a while, but eventually they were Anglophones. But at least in their lifetime they spoke it with a pronounced German accent. We'll learn more about the Mormon Church in Germany and see if Mormons suffered persecution. David: In fact the Germans and the Prussian secret police were so effective that they knew when missionaries were dispatched from Salt Lake City in making their way to the east coast to catch a ship to come to Germany. They knew because they had a secret police network among immigrants in the United States. Check out our conversation….. https://youtu.be/SqL0Gix6Gjs [paypal-donation]
