If you were fortunate enough to grow up in the decade of the 1980s, then chances are you have fond memories walking up and down the isles of iconic toy stories, places KB Toys, Toys are Us, FAO Swartz. Their shelves were lined with toys that defined the years of our youth – Cabbage Patch Kids, Transformers, GI Joe, Tickle Me Elmo, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. In the weeks after the Christmas Shopping Season, it's easy to reminisce about days past of wish lists and letters to Santa. What you may not realize is the connection of many of these childhood toys to one single man, not named Santa Claus. His impact and presence in our lives is as indisputable as it is unrecognized. Today we open a new chapter to the profile of an individual who played a key role in all of our childhoods and whose creative mind paved the way for toys invented well beyond his passing. Couple's Playbook: Getting on the Same Page for the Year Ahead It's easy to start a new year with good intentions — and just as easy to lose them once life speeds back up. In this episode, Chris and Melissa talk about why so many couples want to be intentional but struggle to actually do it together. The issue isn't desire. It's structure. Most couples don't need more motivation — they need a simple playbook that creates the right conversations. They kick things off with a lighthearted look at Chris fully embracing his cowboy era (yes, cowboy hats and horses included), which naturally leads into a bigger theme of the episode: when you don't slow down to get aligned, life starts making decisions for you. Melissa shares how their family has built meaningful year-end and new-year rhythms — from vision boards to reflection questions — and why those traditions work so well, even with kids. Chris explains how reflection and planning became a cornerstone not just in their family, but in their business as well, helping them shape focus, priorities, and direction for the year ahead. The heart of the conversation centers on the Couple's Planning Playbook Melissa created — a simple, guided experience designed to help couples reflect individually, then come together on the things that matter most. They share what it looked like to take the playbook on a date night, fill it out separately, and then talk through it over dinner — including the moment their waitress asked where she could buy it. They also dig into why individual clarity is just as important as shared goals. From health and fitness to parenting and schedules, many goals quietly require two people to succeed — whether we acknowledge that or not. Without alignment, support turns into frustration and good intentions turn into resentment. One of the most meaningful parts of their experience came from walking through questions about each child individually — stepping back from the rush of daily life to really see where each kid is thriving, struggling, or needing extra support. Chris explains how alignment around parenting doesn't happen by accident; it happens through regular, intentional conversations. They wrap up with a hilarious (and very real) story about nearly being manipulated into getting a third dog — a perfect metaphor for what happens when couples don't pause long enough to compare notes. When you don't get on the same page intentionally, decisions get made for you. This episode is an invitation to stop chasing your tail and start leading your family with clarity, unity, and purpose — one simple conversation at a time. P.S. IT'S YOUR TIME TO SHINE, CAPRICORN! Happy New Year! And welcome to season 6 of the podcast! This month's forecast is so good that Susan Miller wants absolutely everyone to know. It's safe to say that Susan is obsessed with January. After a short discussion about the passage of time, Laura and Alex begin the episode with a recap of Susan's January note to her readers. Susan opens with a short description of the spectacular month ahead and a brief health update, but spends most of the note in full Business Woman mode. The gals have never been more convinced that Susan receives kickbacks from Big Fedex. First up is a discussion of Capricorn's forecast, which could not be better. In fact, Laura and Alex can't remember reading such a positive outlook for any sign in years. The planets have partnered up to make sure that the Caps have a birthday to remember. And at the risk of hyperbole, the January 18 new moon should prove to be the greatest thing to happen to anyone ever. Laura then tells her Tauruses about the January horoscope, which is almost as good as the forecast for Capricorn. As always, everything is going great in the tenth house of honors, awards, and achievements. And Laura is very happy to report Susan used one of her greatest turns of phrase to describe Taurus during the February 1 full moon: luckier than a leprechaun! Lastly Alex recaps this month's forecast for Scorpio. It seems that the planets have never gotten along so well, which will lead to a new moon so incredible that, according to Susan, astrologers have been calling each other to marvel at how wonderful it is. Laura and Alex discuss the following at these timestamps: Note from Susan Miller: 3:00Capricorn: 11:00Taurus: 18:50Scorpio: 24:12Share your own thoughts on Susan Miller's Astrology Zone with us by emailing astrologyzoned@gmail.com.Links:Read each episode's transcript at our website: astrologyzoned.comHelp Laura reach the full potential of her Susan Miller legacy by buying her romance novels: http://Lauralovelybooks.com
In the basement room of an East London flat one rainy January morning, Jack sat down with the Irish writer Rob Doyle to discuss the publication of his third novel, Cameo, and delve into his long and complex love for the work of Martin Amis.Rob chose to talk about London Fields, the novel we first encounter on this series through the Financial Times columnist, Janan Ganesh. But whereas Ganesh grew up in Croydon in the late Eighties, with the London Amis depicts in the novel practically on his doorstep, Doyle had never been to England's capital when the cover of London Fields first caught his eye, aged 23, from the shelves of a book exchange at a backpacker's hostel in South East Asia.On a long bus journey in this far-flung part of the world, Doyle recounts coming to terms with the alchemic mastery of Amis's prose in this 1989 masterpiece. London Fields, he says, blended seamlessly the very highest ideas with the very lowest, all to great comic effect. Writing about London, Amis was engaged in an act of philosophy, dredged up from the deepest pits of urban and human decay.Rob and Jack go on to discuss that force of nature that is of course Keith Talent. Talent is for Doyle, as he is for Ganesh, not just one of Amis's greatest characters, but one of the greatest characters ever to cast a shadow on the history of English literature. Of all Amis's beleaguered and benighted male creations, Talent is also arguably the happiest, since apart from anything else, he would be the least bothered by Amis's contempt for him. Later on, Rob and Jack talk about the world Amis so often condemns his male characters to live in. Whether we look to John Self (a man consumed by his own oniomania), the bleak rivalry that sets Keith Talent and Guy Clinch on their fateful course with Nicola Six, or indeed that which Richard Tull and Gwyn Barry must see through a novel later in The Information, Amis's men are rarely sanguine creatures.Male conflict and humiliation were two of Amis's greatest subjects, but while Doyle still regards Amis as one of the best writers ever to interrogate them in their art, he is less convinced by Amis's opposition outlook on male relationships now, in his forties, than he was as a younger man.Happy New Year to you, dear listener. 2026 has begun.FOLLOW US ON TWITTER/ X: @mymartinamisFIND US ON YOUTUBE Hosted on Acast. Tune in to the very first Suite Spot episode of 2026 as special guest and Director of Product - Respond & Resolve™, Jackie Avery, features the Top 5 Guest Sentiment Tags of 2025 and what the key findings of these tags mean not only to hoteliers but the industry as a whole as we kick off travel in the new year. Ryan Embree: Welcome to Suite Spot, where hoteliers check in, and we check out what's trending in hotel marketing. I'm your host, Ryan Embree. Hello everyone, and welcome to another episode of the Suite Spot. Happy New Year as your host. As always, Ryan Embree here with another one of our favorite annual traditions. A great way to start off and kick off the year here with Jackie Avery, Director of Product for our Respond and Resolve™ review response solution for hotels. Jackie, welcome back to the Suite Spot. Jackie Avery: Thanks. It's so great to be here. I look forward to doing this every year, so I'm happy we're back at it. Ryan Embree: Yes, again, it's an annual tradition. It's a benchmark for the beginning of the year. It's actually one of our most viewed and listened to episodes of the year, and I think it's because hoteliers really want to get a sense of what's going on over the course of the calendar year when it comes to reviews. To set this up off the top, we are looking at reputation, sentiment, data, the data within online guest reviews, that Travel Media Group actually pulls, and a lot of these reviews you and your team are responding to. Jackie Avery: Yeah. It's exciting. So if it's your first time here, welcome. And if you have been watching us the past few years, welcome back. We're excited to kind of talk through, some of the data that we kind of went through. So to put it under perspective, we're looking at information analyzed from over 45 million sentiment mentions. Ryan Embree: That's an incredible number. The popularity and importance of guest feedback and reputation right. Now, I know we talk a lot on this podcast about AI technology. We're always trying to see what's next, but there's no replacement for word of mouth. Right? And whether that's physically telling someone about your experience or sharing that, what we're talking about today, sharing that online with guest feedback and reviews, you can take away so much from that. And hoteliers, travelers obviously are looking at sentiment data, trying to figure out whether they should choose the one hotel versus another hotel. Hoteliers are looking at this data, digesting it, and trying to figure out how to improve on the guest experience. But what we're doing today is trying to find the top five sentiments. Talk about some themes. What does this mean when these types of sentiments are found in your guest feedback? Are there things you can make operationally changes? Is it training at the hotel? Is it capital investment? Sometime some of it, like location, which we're gonna talk about unavoidable, right? You can't just pick up your hotel and move it. So really interested to see the list. We always start from the bottom of the list and work our way up. So kick us off with number five. Jackie Avery: Yeah, absolutely. And like you said, it's so powerful to spend that moment reflecting. Yeah. Sometimes it's just taking the information and putting it into this bite sized way for you to process it. So hopefully everyone finds it pretty easy to kinda, you know, come along this journey with us. So, number five, it had over 3 million sentiment mentions, right? So that's a lot of people talking about it. And we're talking about facility amenities. Now, some people are listening and they're going, well, I don't have a pool, so of course I, that didn't get a mention for me, or, I do have a pool. Of course they mentioned that, but stay with me on that. That's actually its own category. So here we are talking about the lobby, the hallways, seating areas, elevators, luggage carts, right? So now think about,
Happy New Year, Indieventurers, welcome to 2026! What's new, what's good? Well that's what we're here to tell you of course! Last year may have been a bit of a washout for AAAs, but the indie game scene is still going strong, despite the many obstacles presented by the modern games industry and… our contemporary world in general. Happily, this year looks set to continue the indie gem trend; even though the calendar is so far looking pretty empty of firm release dates as every game developer and their mum attempts to edge away from the all-consuming spectre of GTA6, there's already plenty on the horizon for us to get excited about all the same. Join us as we evangelise on our upcoming highlights (plus way more bonus honourable mentions than we'd planned) including, in no particular order (just kidding I'm alphabetising them like always): Beware of the Cartographer, Cairn, Denshattack!, Dosa Divas, Find Your Words, Hellmart, inKONBINI, Mandrake, Masters of Albion, The Mermaid Mask, Mixtape, Moonlight Peaks, Orbitals, Paralives, Peace Island, Penguin Colony, A Planet Full of Cats, Raccoin: Coin Pusher Roguelike, ReAnimal, Roman Sands RE:Build, Servant of the Lake, Starsand Island, and – maybe the best-named game ever – Virtue and a Sledgehammer. Our first hyperfixations of the year are here too, and you may not be surprised to learn that over the Christmas break Rachel has been enjoying the latest series of The Traitors, while Liam has been equally diverted by the surprisingly excellent Scooby-Doo licensed DLC for House Flipper 2. Rebecca, meanwhile, thinks that 2026 may have peaked already as far as AAA gaming goes with the release of Heartopia – an Animal Crossing inspired "slow life sim" that somehow also encompasses all of the other trends she's associated with (a mobile live-service game possessed of the world's most useless and forgettable gacha). Also, if you ever read a novel called The Mouse Butcher, can you please let Rebecca know? It'd be a great opportunity to head on over to our Discord if you haven't already, just saying. Our music was written and performed by Ollie Newbury! Find him on Instagram at @newbsmusic. Meanwhile, you can find us at indieventurepodcast.co.uk or wherever you listen to podcasts. Don't forget that you can now join our dedicated Discord too, and be sure to check out our new Steam Curator page if you simply still can't get enough of us!

We are back with a classic "Trials & Triumphs" episode! After a long hiatus from sharing their own home updates (since August!), Caroline, Taryn, and Liz sit down to catch up on what has been happening behind their own front doors. The ladies discuss the highs and lows of homeownership, from Liz's garage flood nightmare to Caroline's victory over a builder-grade "boob light." Taryn gives a major update on her Facebook Marketplace bed project (spoiler: it's finished!), and Caroline explains why she finally ditched her trendy jute rug for a vintage estate sale find. Quick Decorating Takeaways: Don't Fear the "Floater" Rug: Caroline shares her win with a vintage 8x11 rug. While 9x12 is the standard for living rooms, she explains that you can break the "all legs on" rule with a slightly smaller vintage piece as long as the front legs of your furniture anchor it comfortably. Spray It, Don't Brush It: Taryn confirms that for intricate furniture (like a spindle bed), a paint sprayer is non-negotiable.
