Despite being released in 1988, Who Framed Roger Rabbit remains the pinnacle of blending 2D animation with live action photography. Set in Hollywood after World War II, it follows Detective Eddie Valiant as he unravels the murder mystery involving famed toon Roger Rabbit, his wife Jessica Rabbit, and the terrifying villain Judge Doom. It's also famous for bringing together, for the first time, Disney and Warner Bros. characters like Donald and Daffy Duck, plus Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny. Next week we'll look at a not as good live action/animation hybrid, and the week after that one of the worst to do it in the lead up to Coyote VS ACME. For years, Hollywood executive Chris Fenton helped American studios chase the Chinese market — inserting pro-Beijing messaging into films, moving production offshore, and teaching China's own industry how to compete. Now he regrets it. Fenton joins Newt to explain how 60% of American film and TV production has moved overseas, costing Los Angeles alone more than 40,000 jobs, and why the US is the only major film-producing nation without a federal production incentive. His answer: Bad Counselors, a 100% American-made comedy — American cast, crew, and financing — shot in North Carolina, Tennessee, and California, hitting theaters nationwide July 22nd. Fenton also makes the economic case for a national film production incentive backed by a bipartisan congressional coalition, arguing that a simple 10% federal rebate could cut offshore production nearly in half and restore Hollywood's American identity.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Liz and Sarah are making it happen! They've been doing a deep dive into micro-dramas for several months, and now they're at the beginning stages of Executive Producing their first one. They talk about how they've gone about educating themselves in this new (to them) form of entertainment and ask listeners when they've made something happen. Then, in Take A Hike, they discuss the value of having a repertoire of everything from meals to small talk topics. They also share a recent Day In The Life — from dealing with a water outage to writing at the cafe at Godmothers to breaking a new pilot at Bob Dylan concert at the Santa Barbara Bowl. Bruce Lee was one of the first Asian stars in Hollywood. His path to fame wasn't easy but it paved the way for other Asian Americans to do the same today. Bruce was a disruptor in the kung fu world -- a young upstart who wanted to do things differently. Though he would eventually become this legendary figure in American culture, it took him years to hone his own style and philosophy. And many of the early moments that shaped him, the ones that made him the Bruce Lee we see on the silver screen, they took place in Oakland and San Francisco. Bay Curious listener Sam Hopkins wondered about his legacy here and why it isn't more celebrated. Why an Emily Henry interview now? Sanjana and Tyler dig into Bloomberg’s recent piece on the author, where she discusses Hollywood adaptations and delivers the all-timer line: “A lot of actors think that it’s less humiliating to pretend to be a Beatle than it is to pretend to be in love.” Then: Naina Kumar joins to talk about heyday rom-com movies as novelistic underpinnings—see her latest, Just a Highland Fling!—and our hosts launch the Yearner Hall of Fame. Congrats to Ethan Hawke and Hanif Abdurraqib! The Bloomberg Emily Henry interview. Naina Kumar’s Just a Highland Fling (out this week!), Say You’ll Be Mine, and Flirting with Disaster. Her rom-com Mount Rushmore: When Harry Met Sally, You’ve Got Mail, Palm Springs, and While You Were Sleeping. Bonus: Kate & Leopold. Yearner Hall of Fame inductees: Ethan Hawke (his “the one who’s in love always wins” interview with Amelia Dimoldenberg) and poet/romantic/essayist Hanif Abdurraqib. In early September 2025, police were called to an impound lot in Hollywood, California. The staff reported a horrible stench coming from a black Tesla that had been on the lot for three days. When officers opened the front trunk of the Tesla, they found the decomposing and dismembered remains of 14-year-old Celeste Rivas Hernandez. Shortly after, investigators learned that the Tesla belonged to 20-year-old singer David Anthony Burke aka D4vd. The investigation told the story of a teenage girl who'd been groomed, assaulted, and murdered before she even had the chance to grow up. Now, the community and the world await justice for Celeste. This is her story. Van Halen's Diamond Dave perfectly named the symbolic episode, as those who take the devil's bargain end up having to run for the rest of their lives, especially in Hollywood. Messages in music lyrics and symbols paint a darker picture of the true nature of the entertainment industry. Washington D.C. has a Satanic thread running through the halls of power, as it always has. Behind the scenes, the American government has long been controlled by the darkest forces imaginable, connected through pedophilia, rituals, and blackmail. SEASON 2 - EPISODE 203 John Schwartzman - Cinematographer In this episode of the Team Deakins Podcast, we speak with cinematographer John Schwartzman (THE HOUSEMAID, THE HIGHWAYMEN, THE ROCK). John has worked on numerous high-budget, highly commercial films throughout his career, and we spend much of the episode discussing his approach to his work on those movies and his process overall. John's father, an entertainment lawyer for the likes of Stanley Kubrick and Hal Ashby, married into the Coppola filmmaking family while John was just a teenager, and we learn how John leveraged this connection and his skills at board games to win letters of recommendation from his uncle Francis Ford Coppola and friend-of-the-family George Lucas. We also discuss how John draws on his upbringing to help actors feel comfortable during a shoot, and he reflects on how he satisfies his creative needs in modern Hollywood. John also shares the pivotal pieces of advice he received from cinematographers such as Conrad Hall and Caleb Deschanel (Season 1, Episode 86) that instilled confidence in him, and we learn how and why he failed out of USC.
On today's episode of Change Agents, Andy is joined by Brian Streem, the founder and CEO of Vermeer, a defense tech company with forward operations in Ukraine. He went from using drone technology and Hollywood projects ranging from Steven Spielberg movies, The Fast and the Furious films, and Beyonce music videos to the frontlines of war. This technology lets drones navigate when GPS is jammed, spoofed or gone entirely. Brian pivoted his company into Vermeer in 2018, after the Department of Defense showed strong interest in his team's XR technology, building AR command controlled and visualization tools for unmanned swarms in GPS denied environments. On today's episode, filmmaker Greg Francis shares the incredible journey behind making his first feature film, Poker Night, after spending more than a decade fighting to bring it to the screen. He discusses raising financing, navigating Hollywood, losing major actors, rebuilding projects from scratch, and why surviving the filmmaking business often matters more than immediate success. The conversation is packed with practical filmmaking wisdom, covering fundraising, crowdfunding, writing screenplays, directing actors, story development, working with experienced crews, casting recognizable talent, film distribution, and the changing economics of independent cinema. At 16, his grandmother fled Kraków after the Nazis killed her father, worked a New York factory floor beside her mother, and applied to every medical school in the state three years running before one finally said yes — then told her second-grade grandson that education is the only thing nobody can ever take away from him.Years later, David Rogier quit his venture capital job with no idea what he wanted to build, and his boss wrote him a check for $500,000 and told him to go think of something; the dark, formless year that followed became MasterClass, whose holding company still carries his grandmother's nickname. Launch day brought so few sales that he went home and cried, and by day four it was obvious he had a real business on his hands. In this conversation, David breaks down how he got Hollywood's biggest names to say yes, why he believes degrees and résumés are quickly becoming worthless, and the three kinds of jobs he thinks will actually survive AI. David Rogier is the founder and CEO of MasterClass, the platform that put instruction from Martin Scorsese, Christina Aguilera, Steph Curry, and dozens of other world-class practitioners into the hands of millions of learners. He built it from a single $500,000 check and has since launched MasterClass Executive, an AI-native alternative to the traditional MBA created in collaboration with OpenAI and the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. In this episode, we unravel the shocking true story of Tony Kiritsis and the 1977 hostage crisis that became known as the "Dead Man's Wire" case. Armed with a sawed-off shotgun connected to a homemade dead man's wire, Kiritsis held mortgage executive Richard Hall hostage for more than 60 hours, turning a personal grievance into one of the most bizarre standoffs in American history. We examine the events that led to the kidnapping, the intense negotiations that played out live on television, and the legal battle that followed. We also compare how the story has been portrayed in the film Dead Man's Wire and documentary Dead Man's Line, exploring what the adaptation gets right, what they change, and how Hollywood interpreted one of America's strangest true crime cases. This week on Born to Watch, it's time for our Air Force One Movie Review, the movie review podcast where we don't take the movies or ourselves too seriously. Whitey, G-Man, and Will the Worky climb aboard one of the most patriotic action films ever made, as Harrison Ford swaps his whip and fedora for the Oval Office and proves that sometimes the President really can save the day.Released in 1997 and directed by Wolfgang Petersen, Air Force One became one of the biggest blockbusters of the year, delivering a simple but irresistible premise. Terrorists hijack the President's plane, take his family hostage and quickly discover they've picked a fight with a Commander-in-Chief who just happens to be a Medal of Honour recipient. The boys dive into whether this 90s action favourite still holds up almost three decades later, or whether nostalgia is doing most of the heavy lifting.Harrison Ford once again proves why he remains one of Hollywood's greatest accidental heroes. Whether he's Han Solo, Indiana Jones, Dr Richard Kimble or President James Marshall, Ford has a knack for making ordinary people believe they can survive extraordinary situations. The team discusses why his grounded style works so well and why he's able to elevate even the most over-the-top action movies.Of course, no discussion of Air Force One would be complete without Gary Oldman. His performance as terrorist Ivan Korshunov is as intense as ever, even if the boys question whether one of cinema's greatest actors deserved a stronger script. Along the way, they celebrate Oldman's incredible career, from Leon and True Romance through to The Dark Knight, Darkest Hour and beyond. As always, the movie quickly becomes secondary to the ridiculous questions that only Born to Watch can ask.Just how many parachutes does Air Force One actually carry? Why is everyone smiling after jumping out of a plane somewhere over Kazakhstan?Does a 1997 satellite phone really keep working at 20,000 feet? Why is there an endless supply of drinks hidden in the cargo hold? And how exactly does one MiG fighter somehow survive an entire squadron attack just so the movie can have one more action sequence? The crew also takes aim at some wonderfully cheesy taglines, debates whether this is one of cinema's greatest presidential action thrillers, and wonders if Australians will ever truly understand America's obsession with the presidency.Elsewhere, G-Man delivers another outstanding Ordinary People segment, covering Harrison Ford, Gary Oldman, Glenn Close and a cast full of "that guy" character actors you've seen in dozens of movies. There's also a look back at the massive year that was 1997, including Titanic, Men in Black, The Lost World: Jurassic Park and Good Will Hunting.Hit, Sleeper or Dud returns with another trio of recommendations, including Wesley Snipes' underrated Murder at 1600, the Spanish original that inspired Vanilla Sky, and one of the greatest movie titles ever discovered in the Dud category. As always, expect plenty of laughs, terrible impressions, completely unnecessary tangents, and more than a few moments where the logic of Hollywood action films is left hanging out the side of the aircraft. So buckle up, secure your tray table, prepare for decompression, and remember one thing...Get off my podcast! If you enjoy what we do, we'd love your support. Subscribe wherever you listen, leave us a five-star review, share the episode with your mates, and follow Born to Watch across social media. Every listen helps us keep celebrating the movies we all grew up with, one ridiculous review at a time.#AirForceOne #HarrisonFord #GaryOldman #WolfgangPetersen #MovieReview #BornToWatchPodcast #90sMovies #ActionMovies #FilmPodcast #GetOffMyPlane
Laura Piñero conversa con Alfonso Mañas, autor de 'La Odisea, la realidad tras el mito' sobre el último estreno de Hollywood 'La Odisea' de Christopher Nolan. Con Mañas descubrimos que esconde el relato homérico.
Adam Cagley is an actor and writer. He's been doing the Hollywood thing since he was kid. He got to work with Jeremy Allen White when he played Lip's roommate on Shameless. Then, he walked away from all of it to become a Horror Writer. Books no less. We talk about his journey.
Guests in Londinium, 92 AD: Gaius and Germanicus. The Corruption of Hollywood and the Sacred Canon. Regarding the Hollywood remake of the Odyssey, Germanicus characterizes the production as a "Hail Mary" by a "cesspool of corruption" known as Hollywood to remain relevant while "hemorrhaging talent." He labels the film an "abomination" and a "short shrift" to a sacred work of literature. Despite this, he sees a "beacon of hope" in the possibility that the film's failure will drive the younger generation to seek out the original texts. He emphasizes that the Iliad and Odyssey were not "fantasy" but the civilizational canon of Greco-Roman antiquity, acting as "sacred works" that dictated how to live and think. Gaius notes that these epics were originally meant to be "chanted" or "sung" and that they traditionally ended with "calm after the violence" rather than mere spectacle. They conclude that Hollywood has "cheapened our sensibility" and "raped our legacy" by failing to respect these foundational pillars of Western identity. (3)

The Tier 1 (09:31) wide receivers are obvious if you can trust Steve-O, and the first-rounders in Tier 2 (14:29) should be high-floor producers. Where it gets wild is in Tier 3 (18:26), with the sexy, unreliable alphas. Buyer beware. Then Tier 4 (28:25) is a slop of 16 (maybe 18) guys. Craig thinks Luther Burden III is him. Heifetz wants nothing to do with Burden or Zay Flowers or Chris Olave. Tiers 5 and 6 (59:48) become guys just naming guys (complimentary). Ricky Pearsall. Jayden Reed. Parker Washington.
