In this week's episode, Dr. Kim and Mrs. Nancy unpack the powerful topic of expectations—focusing on how to clearly express what you need from your spouse. With honest conversation, a willingness to listen, and an open heart, you can transform how you communicate and connect in your relationship.   Quotes from this episode: “I just thought you knew. And when you didn't I would go along and get resentful” “We were trying to fit each other in the mold.”  “Our first big argument scared the heck out of me. My unrealistic expectation was that we would never fight.”  “It's a good idea to have a signal or cue so that you make your spouse aware.”  Questions for Reflection: What are some expectations—spoken or unspoken—that we each bring into our marriage, and how well do we feel they've been understood by each other? When was a time we misunderstood one another because expectations weren't clearly communicated? What can we learn from that moment? How can we create more space in our relationship for honest, judgment-free conversations about what we each need or hope for? What's one expectation we can both express more clearly this week—and how can we support each other in meeting it with love and grace?   Mentioned in this Episode: Find Dr. Kim on Instagram This month's resource is for every couple. Daily Boost Podcast Show Notes Wisdom of Wives: What Women Have Taught Me About Life May 29, 2025 | Episode 5104 Host: Scott Smith Episode Description In this episode, I discuss the valuable lessons I've learned from the women in my life—my wives, moms, daughters, and other influential women. I share wisdom from historical figures like Abigail Adams and Eleanor Roosevelt, exploring how women have shaped my perspective on life, relationships, and personal growth. From the “look” that every married man knows about the constructive power of silence, I reflect on how women's wisdom has guided me through nearly two decades of podcasting and life itself. Featured Story Scott reflects on his relationships with the important women in his life, sharing personal insights about marriage, wisdom, and the complementary roles that men and women play together. He weaves personal anecdotes with historical quotes from first ladies and influential women, creating a tribute to the feminine wisdom that has shaped his journey over 19 years of podcasting. Important Points Women possess a unique wisdom that often guides and “tames” the men in their lives, creating balance in relationships. True strength is revealed when women face challenging situations - they rise to the occasion with remarkable resilience. Marriage is an active verb, not a passive noun. It requires daily effort and intentional love to make it work. Memorable Quotes “Wisdom and penetration are the fruit of experience, not the lessons of retirement and leisure.” “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” “Marriage is not a noun. It's a verb. It isn't something you get. It's something you do.” Scott's Three-Step Approach Pay attention to the wisdom of the women around you and actively listen to their insights. Recognize that men and women are different but complementary, bringing unique strengths to relationships. Apply the lessons learned from feminine wisdom to become a better partner, father, and human being. Connect With Me Search for The Daily Boost on Apple Podcasts and Spotify. Episode #985 What does it really mean to be present for your kids—not just physically, but emotionally and mentally? And how do you balance that presence with the pressure you put on yourself to be a better man, husband, and leader? In this episode, one father opens up about the raw and honest journey of leveling up—not just as a dad, but as a man. You'll hear how stepping into deeper accountability led to a powerful realization: the standards we hold ourselves to can also become silent contracts that impact our relationships. We dive into what happens when you stop trying to fix others and start leading with understanding. The conversation explores how to break patterns of judgment, how to truly connect with your children (especially daughters), and why being the “lighthouse” for your family sometimes means taking time to recharge your own bulb. You'll also hear about the surprising shifts that come from doing men's work—not just once, but consistently—and how doing this work together brings clarity, confidence, and a deeper connection to purpose. No fluff. Just real stories from real men doing the work—together. Feel like you're doing everything right but still drifting from your wife? This free book will show you how to reconnect—without long talks or therapy.

The Irish novelist has always been open to where life can unexpectedly take him, and the excitement that comes with that kind of freedom.Colm Toibin's first big move was from rural Ireland to Dublin after his father died when he was young. Then, it was off to experience the wild hedonism and sexual liberation of post-Franco Spain, a pleasant shock after needing a prescription to buy condoms in Ireland.Since then, he's journeyed to Sudan, Los Angeles, New York and beyond.Wherever Colm goes, he keeps a running list in his head of tiny details — observations of seemingly mundane encounters, an offhand comment or the cut of a lady's suit on a train.Every now and then, these details bubble up in Colm's memory and another of his well-loved novels, like Brooklyn, Nora Webster or The Master, is born. This episode was produced by Meggie Morris. Conversations Executive Producer is Nicola Harrison. Presented by Sarah Kanowski. It explores film adaptations, death of a parent, grief, Ireland, homophobia, growing up gay, Catholicism, epic adventure, John Crowley, Nick Hornby, Saoirse Ronan, Domhnall Gleeson, Julie Walters, Dublin, immigrant experience, the Irish immigrant experience, family separation, origin stories, falling in love, books, writers, novels, life-story, family dynamics, reflection, loss, funny, comedy, repression, orgies, condom prescriptions, journalism, foreign correspondents.Colm's latest novel Long Island is published by Pan MacMillan. He was in Australia as a guest of the Wheeler Centre, RMIT, Melbourne Writers Festival and Sydney Writers Festival.

A lot of people fall in love outside of their marriages. Some have affairs. Some leave their wives or husbands. But not a lot of people are Agnes Callard. Agnes did something really unique. She fell in love while she was (seemingly happily) married with two children. She told her husband. They got divorced—sharing a single lawyer—and it took under three weeks to split. And then? Then they all moved in together. To repeat, Agnes lives with her husband, her ex-husband, and their combined three kids. And by the way, they're all philosophy professors at The University of Chicago. The cherry on top is that she talks about all of it. A lot. And with radical openness and honesty—including in an unforgettable profile of her in The New Yorker titled “Agnes Callard's Marriage of the Minds.” Perhaps you hear all of that and think: This woman is a nut. Or at the very least a little zany. We beg to differ. There's something about Agnes. Whether it's a result of her worldview, her predisposition, or her vocation as a philosopher, that gives her a tremendous ability to float above any situation—including the most intimate and personal—and philosophize it. When Agnes writes and speaks openly about the experience of falling in love while married, and about how it unmoored her understanding of relationships and expectations, she helps the rest of us make sense of the most universal topics and experiences. It is an unusual gift. These experiences and her reflections on them all became fodder for her new book, Open Socrates: The Case for a Philosophical Life, where she says we are not asking ourselves important questions—about how we should live and how we might change. Today on Honestly, Bari asks Agnes: how and why she turned her life upside down for love, how she knew it was love, how she examines her own marriage, how we can all live like her hero Socrates, and how an examined life can benefit us all.
