Jonathan Small joins Tyson E Franklin on the Podiatry Legends Podcast to discuss a pervasive myth in the professional world: the idea that a business's location is the critical determinant of its success and fee structure. Jonathan debunks this, suggesting that the true driver of success is the business owner's mindset. He shares insights from his extensive experience, including the notion that prioritising personal happiness and aligning one's practice with personal values are more important than the business's geographical location. The discussion covers various examples, from restaurants in remote locations charging premium prices to successful businesses thriving despite being in supposedly unfavourable areas. Jonathan emphasises the importance of marketing, value proposition, and the ability to adapt and evolve a business according to changing times and personal growth. Tyson and Jonathan also share personal stories of overcoming discrimination, prejudice, and financial challenges, underscoring the importance of resilience, self-belief, and the impact of one's surroundings on personal and professional development. They highlight the necessity of surrounding oneself with positive influences and continuously striving for self-improvement and professional excellence. The episode serves as a reminder that limitations are often self-imposed. Jerome McCarthy in his 1960 book, "Basic Marketing, A Managerial Approach," the Four P's - Product (& Service), Price, Place (or Location), and Promotion - have been utilized individually or in tandem to drive a business's marketing objectives.Understanding the Four P's Product (and Service)The very essence of what you're offering. Is your service portfolio broad or specialized? Dive deep into the importance of refining what you offer. PriceBeing the priciest or the cheapest, both come with their sets of challenges. We emphasize the significance of pricing strategies that not only cover costs but also bring profit. Because being the cheapest? It's a race you don't want to win. Place (or Location)Are you a street-front clinic, tucked away in a mall, or perched on a second floor? We delve into how your location can impact foot traffic, visibility, and overall business. Are you easily spotted? Let's find out. Promotion (Your Marketing)From your online presence - website, social media, etc. - to offline efforts, learn the tricks and trades of reaching out to your audience effectively. The BIG QUESTION of the Day:Where are your ideal patients searching for the podiatry services you provide? And, when they find you, will they see the value in the price you've set? This episode is more than just a theoretical breakdown; it's a toolkit, a guide, a roadmap to understanding, and most importantly, implementing the Four P's in your podiatry clinic's marketing strategy. For more actionable insights and resources to elevate your practice's growth, continue tuning in to the Podiatry Marketing podcast at https://podiatry.marketing.

Welcome to the Podiatry Marketing podcast. In this episode, Jim McDannald, DPM, and Tyson E. Franklin delve into the art and science of creating impactful patient video testimonials for your podiatry clinic. The power of a well-made testimonial video is undeniable. It's not merely about recording a patient's feedback; it's about narrating a compelling story of transformation and trust. Whether you're new to the game or looking to refine your approach, this episode provides a step-by-step guide to ensure your videos are engaging, informative, and, most importantly, authentic. Why Create Patient Testimonial Videos? In today's digital age, where consumers heavily rely on reviews and personal experiences, testimonial videos can be a game-changer for your clinic. They not only foster trust among potential patients but also humanize your brand, showcasing real-life success stories and the impact of your services.Steps to Crafting the Perfect Testimonial Video: Identify Your Objectives: Start by pinpointing what you want to achieve. Is it brand awareness, showcasing specific treatments, or highlighting overall patient satisfaction? Choose the Right Patients: Not all patients may be comfortable on camera. Find those who are passionate about their positive experiences and are eager to share. Prepare Questions and Prompts: A natural conversation flows better than a scripted one. Prepare a list of open-ended questions that can help guide the conversation and highlight key points. Plan the Shoot: Choose a comfortable setting, possibly the clinic itself or a serene outdoor spot. Ensure good lighting and minimal background noise. Record the Testimonials: Remember to make your patients feel at ease. Use high-quality recording equipment and make sure to capture genuine emotions. Edit the Videos: Trim unnecessary content, add captions, and maybe some light background music. Ensure the final video conveys the desired message and retains authenticity. Share and Promote: Distribute the testimonial videos across various platforms such as your website, social media channels, and email campaigns. They challenge you to ask yourself: Are you merely imitating what's already out there, or are you bringing something unique to the table? This lively discussion encompasses several key aspects of establishing a distinctive podiatry practice, such as: Identifying and understanding your competitors: Who are the other podiatrists in your area, and what services do they provide? Are they all delivering the same offerings in the same manner? Defining your difference: What sets your business apart? What special skills or equipment do you possess that your competitors do not? Recognizing the importance of differentiation: If you can't differentiate your business from the rest, how will your patients, doctors, and physiotherapists do so? It's essential to present your practice as a unique entity in the crowded podiatry landscape. Looking beyond the same old: Many clinics advertise in the same way, promoting general foot care, wart treatment, orthotics, ingrown toenail remedies, and diabetic foot care. While these are all vital services, how can you present them differently to avoid being just another 'boring' clinic? As Einstein said, "You have to learn the rules of the game. 267 - When Good Enough is Good Enough with Tyson E Franklin

Podiatry Legends Podcast

In podiatry, there are times when perfection is expected. Surgery would be one of those times, sterilising instruments would be another, and also performing a biomechanical assessment and prescribing orthotics would be times when perfection, or close to perfection, is pretty important…however, there are other times when perfection is totally unnecessary, and good enough is good enough to get started.  Episode Sponsor - Podiatry Clinic Websites Launch Now and Fine Tune Later Over the past few years, I've seen some average podiatry websites; but an average LIVE website is much better than having no website. If you're waiting for your website to be perfect before making it LIVE, please stop waiting for it to be perfect and get something out there now. Every day you wait, you're losing potential patients to your competitors who have a live website, and there is a big chance their website may be worse than the one you're holding back. And, if you're rebuilding your existing website, don't wait until every page is perfect before relaunching; get the new information onto your site as soon as you can and get it out there so your patients can see it. Podiatry Legends New Website I must point out that I am talking from experience here. I have had at least four major podiatry website designs over my career, and more recently, I have just launched a stand-alone website for the Podiatry Legends Podcast, so this is all very fresh in my mind. Please, take a look and see what you think. Just visit www.podiatrylegends.com It's far from perfect, and it still needs a few tweaks, but it is LIVE, and that is what counts most. Right now…good enough is good enough. You have to keep in mind the 80:20 RULE. If the 80:20 holds true, only 20% of your website pages will be viewed by 80% of the people that visit your website, so if you're waiting for every page to be ready before you launch, you're wasting time because 80% of your pages are not going to be viewed by many people at all. It's sad but true. And even as I say this, it makes me think back to some of the delays I caused on the podiatrylegedns.com website. To make me feel better, you can visit my website and look at every page, but let's be honest, just like your patients, you'll stick to the main pages of interest. Other Marketing  It is important to approach all your marketing with the same attitude: good enough is sometimes good enough. The patient information brochure you're working on, the reactivation letter you discussed at last week's team meeting that still needs some work, and the video you shot last month for YouTube, but you're holding back because you're unsure about the lighting or the sound. In general, most of your marketing activities, as do my own, could probably be tweaked and made better, but 80% and out the door is better than 100% and in the draw.  A brilliant email blast, clinic newsletter or Facebook ad will get zero results until it is released. The solution is to release it. I remember when I wrote my first book, It's No Secret There's Money in Podiatry. I was part of a writer's group, and we had a writing mentor. There were four of us in the group, and at a particular point, our mentor said…good enough is good enough; you've got to stop editing and send it to the publisher; otherwise, it will never get done. There were two things I learnt from this after sending it to the publisher. I got a mental break. So much work went into writing and editing it felt good to stop and just let it go, and this mental break allowed me time to work on another project. When I got it back from the publisher, I had plenty of time to do further edits, but I got the process started by sending it off.   My initial transcript went back and forth two or three times until all editing was complete, and it was then sent off to the printers. That was a stressful day, and I remember thinking there was no turning back now. Even to this day, nine years after publishing and with thousands of copies sold, there are a few things I would have liked to have changed. There are even a few errors in the book, but if I didn't follow the good enough is good enough principle, my book would still be in my head and partially written on my computer. Here's something else I'd like to highlight. In my writers' group, only two of us out of the four stopped editing and sent it to the publisher as instructed. Both of us since then have also written and published a second book. The other two in the group, who didn't stop editing and didn't send it to the publisher, never had their books published. I think we can all learn from this. Having a good enough is good enough approach is the first step in getting projects completed, especially marketing projects.   Once completed, you'll have time afterwards to make slight changes if needed, and with each change, you can test and measure the success of each change. Testing and measuring are important and relate to understanding the numbers of your business. I did an episode on this, Episode 135 - The Importance of Understanding Your Numbers.  Your Team To wrap up, I have one more item to discuss in relation to good enough being good enough.   So far, I've only discussed how it applies to marketing aspects of your business; however, this good enough is good enough approach can also be applied to your team. We all like to think we're good at what we do, and if you've been practising for many years, it's probably true; however, what happens when you employ someone else and they start treating your patients?  Firstly, this can be a stressful moment in your career, and secondly, it will drive you crazy if your push for perfection on a day-to-day basis, and I know this for a fact because I have done this in the past. As I said in my opening comments, surgery is one of those times when perfection is required or as close to perfection as possible, as is sterilisation; however, your business will fail to grow at the rate it should if you focus on perfection with your team.   Yes, your team's communication skills may need improvement, and their KPIs may not be as good as yours in certain areas, but then again, they may be better than yours in others. Would you chew yourself a new one if your team, out did you? No, you wouldn't, so give your team the same allowances. Taking on a good enough is good enough approach in some aspects of your business will give you a mental rest, and this is a positive. Last week in Episode 265, I mentioned you get what you tolerate, meaning if you allow poor behaviour or attitudes to continue, you only have yourself to blame. I think it is important to point out that having a good enough is good enough approach to your business is not about tolerating poor behaviour; it's about setting suitable and sustainable standards in your business and allowing a little wiggle room for growth and imperfection. With a good enough is good enough approach, you will have more time with your family and be a better partner or parent, more time to pursue your hobbies, therefore less stress and more fun in your life, and you'll have more time to become a better mentor to your team, and when you become a better mentor to your team, your team will improve as a consequence. The overall standards of your business will increase. I am bringing back my solo episodes; the first is about improving team meetings. On a recent family trip to Canberra, we visited Parliament House, and when it comes to enforcing rules around meetings in the chamber, no one is stricter.  Every podiatry business can learn from this because YOU GET WHAT YOU TOLERATE. If you allow poor behaviour, you will get more of it, especially when starting meetings on time.  My blog article, which this episode was based on, can be found here.  If you have any questions about this episode, please email me at tyson@podiatrylegends.com and make sure you visit the NEW Podiatry Legends Podcast website at https://www.podiatrylegends.com/ and check out our sponsors, online course and live events.  Episode Sponsor: Podiatry Clinic Websites - Step Up Your Website Game https://www.podiatryclinicwebsites.com/ Podiatry Business Coaching: If you're looking for a podiatry business coach with proven results and no BS, please email me at tf@tysonfranklin.com or visit the coaching section of my website https://www.tysonfranklin.com/Coaching YouTube: Have you checked out my YouTube Channel - Tyson E Franklin https://www.youtube.com/tysonfranklin

Leverage Local Search Ads:Use local search ads, such as Google Ads or Facebook Ads, to target potential patients in your area. This can be a highly effective way to reach individuals who are actively searching for podiatry services in your locality. Offer Free Educational Opportunities:Free educational resources such as seminars or workshops can benefit the community and position your clinic as a trusted source of information. Podiatry Marketing Live Tickets Now On Sale - Only 30 Seats AvailableWelcome to another episode of the Podiatry Marketing Podcast. In this episode, Jim McDannald, DPM, and Tyson E. Franklin delve into an important topic that might seem a bit intimidating at first - Negative Online Reviews. What We Covered: The reality of negative reviews: It's crucial to understand that every practice experiences a bad review occasionally. It's a normal part of running a podiatry clinic, and not a reflection of your practice's overall quality or dedication. Response over reaction: The critical aspect isn't the negative review itself, but how you respond to it. Your reaction can set the tone for how the situation develops and can impact the perception of potential patients who come across the review. Step 1 - Initial reaction: Before reacting, it's essential to take a deep breath and evaluate whether the review is from an actual patient. Although fake reviews are rare for podiatry clinics, they do happen, and identifying them early can save a lot of unnecessary stress and response. Step 2 - Offline resolution: If possible, make an attempt to settle the issue offline. Direct communication with the reviewer can often lead to a better understanding of their concerns and potentially to a resolution that satisfies both parties. Step 3 - Public response: When responding publicly, maintain a non-emotional, professional tone. Ensure that your response is HIPAA compliant, respecting the privacy and rights of the patient at all times. This episode is filled with practical advice and strategies to manage and respond to negative reviews effectively. Remember, it's not about the negative review itself, but how you handle it that matters.Listen in to equip yourself with the tools you need to turn a potentially damaging situation into an opportunity for demonstrating professionalism and dedication to patient satisfaction. To learn more about growing your practice and accessing additional resources, check out more episodes of the Podiatry Marketing Podcast at https://podiatry.marketing. This book is available from Amazon - https://amzn.to/421AXQB. Annie Duke was a world-class professional poker player, and in this book, she explains that your thinking and decision-making process is far more critical than the outcome of the decision. A wrong decision resulting in a good outcome does not make the original decision any better, and vice versa; a good decision resulting in a less than favourable outcome does not mean your initial decision was terrible, especially if the decision was made using all the available information at the time. This is a solo episode, and I chose to go solo because it is the last episode for 2022, and I wanted to talk about a few essential topics that I think will make 2023 a more successful year for you, your career and your business. I've titled this episode, It's No Secret There's Money in Podiatry, and even though that is the same title as my 2014 book, the information I'm about to share is not in it. Important takeaways from this episode: Every big business started as a small business – Apple, Facebook and Nike all began as small businesses. Your attitude will determine your success – For every business screaming doom and gloom, another company is doing exceptionally well, which applies to every industry. "Whether you think you can or think you can't, either way, you're right". – Henry Ford. There are three things you must do: Set Business Goals – You must review them often because life tends to get in the way. Develop Business Systems – A business with systems will always sell for more than a business without systems. Understand Marketing Basics – This skill is required to avoid being ripped off and taken advantage of. Podiatry Legends Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 4, 2019 5:56

I know the title of this podcast podiatry legends is a bit odd, but if you look at the word LEGEND, it means an extremely famous or notorious person, especially in a particular field or profession. So I don’t think I have any notorious podiatrists lined up as guests, but I do believe I have a group of podiatry guests that are already doing great things in our profession or will be shining lights in the not too distant future. Goal Of The Podcast So that is the goal of this podcast. I want to shed light all the great things happening in our profession, who is doing them and expose to you some of the fantastic career paths some podiatrists have taken, all over the world, which is why 100% of my guests are qualified Podiatrist. If you’re a podiatry student, or recent graduate and you’re wondering what the podiatry profession has to offer long-term, there is a lot if you want to open your eyes and your minds. If you’ve been in the podiatry profession for some time and your feeling tired, tuning in each week and listening to some of the fantastic stories may be the spark and motivation you need to pivot from your current path and take a different trajectory. What's Coming Up On Future Episodes On the next three episodes, you will hear from Tony Gavin based in the United Kingdom, Peter Wishnie from the United States and Simon Bartold from Australia. Each podiatry guest was selected because I believe they have a unique story to share and have done or are currently doing amazing things in our profession. Openly Sharing Important Information  One key trait I have noticed with all my guests so far is they are the type of podiatrists that love sharing what they have learnt. They don’t want to keep what they’ve discovered to themselves. Openly sharing their knowledge is why I referred to them as podiatry legends because that’s the sort of things legends do even though every guest so far has been quick to point out that they do not feel like legends. However, that’s what a legend would say. This Is Not A Technical Podcast I think it’s important to note this is not a technical podiatry podcast. This podcast is about sharing successful stories, ideas, career paths and upcoming worthwhile events, and along the way, we have a few laughs. Now I’m sure there are plenty of podiatrists who have no idea who I am or where I’m from, so I’m going to give you a brief rundown of where I fit in the profession and if you want to learn more go to my website tysonfranklin.com. Podiatry Scope Is Vast As a profession, I think podiatry offers so much scope, more so than most, and hopefully, after listening to a few of my legendary guests, you’ll be inspired to do more yourself, or at least start considering it. They say the definition of insanity is to do the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result, so if you’re not 100% happy with what you’re doing every day; you have the power to change it. It’s not up to anyone else; it’s up to you. It’s just a decision. If you have any questions about this podcast or future podcasts, please send me an email at tf@tysonfranklin.com At the end of each episode, I also plan to have the contact details of each of guest and details of any upcoming workshops and events. Also, if you know of any podiatrists doing amazing things in our profession, please steer them my way and have them email me directly.   And finally, I have set up a Podiatry Legends Facebook page, which is where I’ll be posting each episode and information about upcoming workshops and events being run by myself and my guest.

She is also a professional speaker, business coach, entrepreneur and proud mum, and she resides in one of the most beautiful places on earth Sun Valley, Idaho. Kathryn speaks from experience and during our conversation we discuss entrepreneurship, writing and publishing, nutrition, meeting the President of The United States and Michelle Obama, and why making everything fun is so important. Entrepreneur Energy Most entrepreneurs have their minds switched on at all times and a lot of people wonder where they get their energy from? Here’s the answer: If you’re passionate about what you’re doing you can go all day. Many small business owners get tired because they’re doing something they don’t really like and there’s no passion. Entrepreneurs don’t get tired because they’re doing things that are interesting and usually things they love to do and this is a renewing source of energy. Steve Jobs would ask himself, am I excited about what I’m doing today? If he wasn’t he would change it. Associated Fluency Sometimes things that seemingly look unrelated are very much related. Steve Jobs took a calligraphy class at university and it was this class that taught him about fonts and design that became a big part of Apple. Move Your Body You can learn better by listening and moving your body at the same time, which is why walking and listening to podcasts works so well. When you clear your head by being in the present moment, you will get clarify and new ideas. Make sure you use your phone to record your thoughts, because they’re usually the good ones, when your mind is clear. 6 Step Process to Start The New Year Step 1: Close out the previous year - Take time to celebrate your accomplishments, new skills and new relationships, but also review and learn from the mistakes you made.   Step 2: Clutter Clearing: You need to make space for the new year ahead, just like thinning out your garden each year so new plants can grow and flourish. You need to physically get rid of stuff and here’s the challenge. For 9 days in a row throw out 27 items per day, which will total 243 items you get rid of. You’ll be surprised how good this makes you feel. To see the 6 steps in detail you can download Kathryn’s FREE GIFT – 6 STEPS TO YOUR AMAZING 2018 Thinking is a limited resource so simplifying things in your life is a great idea. Positive on Publishing Podcast This podcast came about because there’s so much pain in the publishing world and 80% of people want to write a book, but the process has got to be fun, or otherwise they won’t do it, or they’ll get burnt. Publishing is a complex industry and everyone says all you need to do is take action, but first you need preparedness. You also need to understand the publishing options available and what’s best for you. Should you self-publish, create an eBook, use CreateSpace or try a traditional publisher. Make Everything Fun Website Kathryn created the make everything fun website and single Facebook Page so everything was in one place. If you have too many websites to manage, it’s like having too many shirts to choose from, it once again takes up mental energy. It’s all about simplification. Some people like nutrition and some people like writing. By having everything on one website and one Facebook page it lets your audience see what else you do. You may be surprised that your audience in one area is interested in other things you do.  Monday Morning Tip Eat That Frog: Before you go to sleep each night you need to know what your most important task is for the next day and you need to do that first before anything else. You may not get it all day in one day, so give yourself a time limit and schedule others days for it’s completion.   Don’t get dragged into OPA: Other Peoples Agenda.   Other Links:  Ketchum Innovation Centre All of Kathryn's Books:  Make Wellness Fun website Fiesta Cassorole Recipe Don't forget Kathryn’s FREE GIFT – 6 STEPS TO YOUR AMAZING 2018 If you have any questions about this podcast blog please email me at tf@tysonfranklin.com If you have purchased and read my book I'd like to thank you. Tim Hyde is based in Canberra and runs a successful marketing agency called Win More Clients. As Tim points out, your digital presence, marketing automation, your social strategy and your brand are all pieces of a much larger puzzle. Uncle Scrooge Tim was inspired at the age of six by Golden Books Uncle Scrooge. He didn’t quite know what Uncle Scrooge did, but he knew he owned businesses and made a lot of money.  This inspired six-year old Tim to create his own circus and charge his friends to attend. It was at this point he got hooked on the idea that people would give you money if you made them happy. Marketing Maturity Many companies do not understand that there are multiple stages in a customer lifecycle and you need to nurture your customers onto the next stage of the cycle, it doesn’t happen by itself. Most traffic that comes to your website leaves straight away, which is good because you didn’t want them to begin with, they were just tyre kickers.  Some are ready to buy immediately, which is also great, but there’s a huge group in the middle that are your potential customers. This group needs to be nurtured until they know, like and trust you, and only then will they buy from you. Customer Lifecycle It’s all about having patience and diligence to nurture the relationship and you need to understand the customer lifecycle and where that customer is at any given point in time. Don’t Sell On The First Date You don’t ask someone to marry you the first time you meet, but often companies try to sell to someone straight away, and yes some people are ready to buy right now, but most are not. In a relationship a person must first know, like and trust you. As you build the relationship over time, only then can you ask them to marry you and from there you have an engagement, a wedding and a honeymoon, but it doesn’t stop there. To continue the relationship into the future you must continue to nurture it, by celebrating milestones, such as anniversary’s and birthdays, surprise gifts and date nights. So even though we can survive on one relationship, our businesses can’t, it relies on hundreds or thousands of relationships and all these relationships will be at different stages in the customer lifecycle.   Frequency of Purchase Do you know your clients / customers frequency of purchase? It’s no surprise why ALDI, Coles and Woolworths put catalogues in your letter box every week, it’s because they know most people shop weekly. It’s not about this weeks specials, it’s about continuing the relationship. Look at the entire customer lifecycle and ask what are you doing really well, where are there holes in your business and where can you get some quick wins by plugging some holes. Facebook Live Some businesses will jump onto FACEBOOK live because it’s popular, but they never stop to think where their customers are in their lifecycle and does FACEBBOOK Live really fit. What’s the purpose of doing Facebook live? Are you putting out the wrong message? If you are and if you continue to do this it will put people off and they may never come back. For example, if you were in a bar and walked up to a young lady and immediately started talking, but she clearly wasn’t interested, you need to stop, otherwise you will become annoying and the bouncer will ask you to leave.   People Buy From People Do you know your Brand Avatar? Do you know the personality of your business? If your business was a person would it be fun, quirky, likeable, or trust worthy. This personality forms the culture of an organisation and attracts certain people who want to work there and it also attracts a certain type of client. Client Avatar: Who is your perfect client? Just saying a male or female between the ages of 30 and 40 is no longer good enough. There’s a lot more to it. Business Avatars and Client Avatars must align. Avoid Disconnect If someone ends up on your landing page or website and what they’re searching for cannot be found, it creates disconnect and distrust. A person that feels uneasy will not purchase. Have you ever gone to a restaurant with a certain perception of what it will be like, but then it did not match the experience. More often than not you will not go back.  Sometimes you won’t even walk through the front door, purely based on how it looks. First Language and Second Language Every industry has their own jargon and when we don’t understand the conversation it makes us feel inadequate and stupid. When we feel this way what do we do? It’s simple, we don’t purchase. When we don’t feel comfortable we won’t take the next step with that business. Know, Like & Trust Relationships are built on likability, credibility and visibility and when you’ve got those three things, when people know, like and trust you, it’s not a question of IF they’re going to work with you, it’s just a matter of WHEN.  Trust means are you credible. If I know and like you, but don’t think you have any credibility, we’re not doing business. If you’re visible and credible, but not likeable, we’re not doing business. If you’re likable and credible, that’s fantastic, but I don’t know who you are, I can’t give you my money. You’ve got to tick all of these boxes and remember that we’re building a relationship with our clients over time. Plug the holes Often you don’t need more new clients, you need to plug the holes in your relationship lifecycle. You need to know where you’re losing your existing clients. Generating new business from people that don’t know you is time consuming and an expensive exercise, especially if they’re leaking out of your business just as fast as you’re putting them in. Tim’s Monday Morning Tip Go back to all your existing clients, assuming you have a database, and ask them, HOW CAN I HELP YOU? That's Brilliant.    To connect with Tim visit his website: https://www.winmoreclients.com.au or you can email Tim at tim@winmoreclients.com.au Tim also has a free eBook that can be downloaded directly from his website called The Sales Machine. FMF #8 - Post Conference Time Blocking

It's No Secret with Dr T.

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 28, 2017 5:05

One of the hardest things to do when returning from a great business seminar, or conference is implementing what you’ve just learnt. You’ll get home and the next day, usually a Monday, you’ll head into work full of vigor, only to realise you have appointments booked solid from 8.30am to 5.30pm. Not to worry though, you still have your lunch break. But just before lunch you receive an email from your Accountant and he or she needs you to call them urgently. By the time you phone them and finish eating your lunch, lunchtime is over. Once again, you’re not too concerned, because you have nothing scheduled after work, so you can start on all your new ideas at the end of the day, when it’s quiet and there won’t be any interruptions. However, by the time 5.30pm comes around, you’re buggered, so you tell yourself, it’s been a long day, one night off will be good for me, however this pattern repeats itself on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and before you know it the week is over and it’s the weekend. Weekend Off You decide to take the weekend off, because you’ve been so busy all week and you deserve the break, especially since you spent all last weekend at a conference and if you have family you cannot neglect them two weekends in a row. One week leads to two weeks and before you know it a month has past and you have not yet implemented one new idea. Does any of this sound familiar? I must admit I repeated this process over and over again for years and it frustrated the absolute shit out of me. I would get so annoyed with myself, but then I discovered the solution, Post-Conference Time Blocking. Time Blocking If you’ve never used time blocking before you should, and if you’re not sure what time blocking is, it’s the easiest way to get things done. Time blocking is about dedicating specific blocks of time to specific tasks and your goal is to perform and complete those tasks within the given time frame. If it’s not completed you immediately block out more time on another day. Time Blocking is far better and more productive than having a daily to do list with no specific time frames. What is Post-Conference Time Blocking? It’s just like normal time blocking, you block out a specific period of time to perform a particular task, however post-conference time blocking also needs to be scheduled prior to leaving for an event, you cannot do it afterwards. If you try to do it after the conference it just wont’ happen. Things will come up. Therefore the earlier you can block out this time the better. Why not make it part of your conference booking procedure: Pay for Conference Tickets Schedule Post-Conference Time Block Book Accommodation Book Airfares If you keep it in this order it will never be missed again. Stay An Extra Day I know some people who prefer to stay one day longer at their booked accommodation and they keep this additional day free so they can review their notes and start planning how they will implement what they’ve just learnt back into their life and business. If you have the time to do this it’s a great idea, but if not make sure you block out your first day back at work, or at least half the day. It’s also important to block out additional post-conference time blocks, because one time block is not going to be enough. One Idea At A Time Be aware that you cannot implement everything you learnt in one go, no matter how good the information, it’s virtually impossible, so instead pick the top three takeaways or ideas and from this short list pick just one. Work on this one takeaway or idea on the first day back at work and as soon as it’s completed move onto the next most important item. This is why you need to have additional post-conference time blocks scheduled, because you’re going to need them. Take Action Attending seminars, conferences, and even workshops are great, but it’s more important to take action on what you’ve learnt and you can only do this by blocking out post-conference time blocks. INS016 - The Brilliant Mind of A Magician with Dennis Friebe

A Magician is an Actor playing the part of a Magician. My guest Dennis Friebe, aka Kardenni, is both a Magician and Actor based in Orlando Florida. One thing I know for sure, he is a doer of many things. To understand something fully he can’t just read about it, he must experience it and do it, and then add it to his skill set. He was encouraged early in life by his mother to do whatever he wanted, and therefore he believed he could be anything he wanted if he put his mind to it, and that’s exactly what he did. His goal was to be a pilot, and he actually went to an aviation high school, but he was bitten early by the magic bug and got a part-time gig working in a magic shop. Important advice from the business owner: “You can’t just do magic, you’ve got to learn how to sell magic, so the customer wants to buy it”. Be Inspired By Others, But Don’t Copy Others When you’re learning anything new you must first copy someone else, usually someone that inspires you…until you develop your own process. Developing your own process is the key. Never just copy your opposition. Look at what makes their business work so well and think how can you apply what you see to your own process. What’s Your Intent? In magic, your INTENT may be to make the glass disappear. How you make the glass disappear is the METHOD. The RESULT is what the customer, or audience sees, but no one ever sees the method. In business your INTENT may be to increase revenue and how you do it is the METHOD. The RESULT is what your opposition sees, but once again they don’t see the method. Increase Your Level of Skills Everyone should try many things and add to their array of skills, because when these skills are applied to each other, they start to work together to get you closer to your true self.   These skills don’t need to be razor sharp, they just need to be sharp enough so you can call upon them when needed. But everyone will have one skill that is his or her best. For example, someone may have a pilot’s license, be a published author, play the guitar, be a good cook and a handy golfer, but their main skill is being a doctor. Talk To People Not At People Dennis was a skilled magician, but he noticed he was not connecting with his audience, until someone told him to start talking to the audience, not at the audience. Make the show about them, not about you. This was the one thing that was missing from his performance and it took him 15 years to understand this. His ego got in the way. You Must Deliver What’s the difference between a $100 magician and a $1000 magician? Basically if you ask for $1000 you’ll get it, however in the end you must deliver a $1000 performance, because that’s what’s expected. You must become the $1000 magician. Why can Apple charge what it does for its phone? It’s all about branding, marketing, packaging and delivery. A Brilliant Monster To become a better magician Dennis started taking acting classes, because a magician is just an actor playing the part of a magician. Prior to acting classes he was simply a man being a magician. His acting career is taking off and he has appeared in a few television shows and short movies, but his latest full-length movie comes out in early 2018, called A Brilliant Monster. It looks awesome. FMF #3 - Events and No Shows

Today I want to talk about something that everyone seems to brush under the carpet and for some reason, no one really wants to talk about, and I don’t know why. I want to talk about Events and No Shows People say YES to an event and then simply don’t turn up. Now I’m not talking about the people that contact you an hour before an event with a last minute excuse why they can’t make it. And rarely do they phone, it’s always a text message, email or Messenger. You know the excuses I’m talking about: Kids are sick I got called into work unexpectedly Couldn’t get a babysitter Now we know some excuses are legit, but we also know most are outright lies. We’re not stupid, even if they think we are, but at least they contacted us, and we should thank them for this because it does give you an opportunity to invite someone that wasn’t on your initial list. So let’s get back to the NO SHOWS How often do you attend an event and lined up on the registration table are the name badges of the attendees that did not show up? It happens all the time, but no one ever wants to talk about it. It’s like it’s a taboo subject, but I think it needs to be discussed. Someone said that you should focus on the positive, the people that attended, and not focus on the negative, the people that did not attend, and I totally agree. At the event it’s all about the positive, however after the event during your debrief I think it’s an ideal time to discuss who did not attend. Was it the same people…again! Of course some people may have legitimate reasons for not attending, and family and work commitments should always come first, but let’s be honest, they would be in the minority. No Excuse I want you thinking about the NO SHOWS that don’t bother providing an excuse. They don’t apologize for not attending, and they make no mention of your event. It’s as though it never really happened, and maybe if they don’t say anything you won’t notice they didn’t attend? What they forget is the nametags are usually on the registration table for everyone to see, so it does not go unnoticed…and often it’s the same people. Skin in the game Kevin Miller, host of The ZIGLAR Show, and I talk about having skin in the game on an upcoming podcast. The more skin you have in the game, meaning the more invested you are, the more you will pay attention. We were actually talking about giving advice to people. If advice is free…it’s not valued. The more people pay for advice, the more people listen, and I think this applies to events as well. When an event is free, regardless of the type of event…it’s devalued. But what they forget is the event was not free to the host. The host may have spent many hours organizing the event and invested their own money to make it a success. Sunday Roast I was talking with my book publisher recently and this subject came up in conversation and I came up with a funny analogy. If your mother invited you over for a Sunday roast and you said yes, would you not turn up? Of course you wouldn’t…it’s your mum and you know there would be repercussions. You also wouldn’t make a last minute excuse. I read a good quote recently, which I think has a lot of meaning. “You cared enough to invite them, but they didn’t care enough to attend”. Wrong Mindset Marc Mawhinney, host of The Marc Mawhinney Show, said in a recent podcast that 80% of entrepreneurs should never have started, because they just don’t have the right mindset. He said that not showing up to an event, a workshop, or even an appointment never goes unnoticed and more often than not it’s a missed opportunity for business growth, and this is why they don’t make it. I’ve invited a friend of mine, Dr David Weiman, who is a Psychologist in Pennsylvania, onto my podcast to discuss this subject in more detail, and to try and explain the psychology behind people not attending, making last minute excuses, or simply telling lies to get out of going to an event. (This will be released early 2018) So, I’m glad I spoke about this subject today and I think more people should. People need to hold other people accountable for their actions, or should I say inactions. Are my expectations of people too high? I don’t think so, its simply common decency. If you're in the public eye, or ear, for an extended period of time you will be judged, and people will have a certain level of expectation when they meet you.  Here's the big question: Do you live up to that expectation? This podcast episode is based from a blog article I wrote on my website, THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING GENUINE, shortly after meeting some pretty cool podcast hosts in Brisbane at this years WE ARE PODCAST: Omar Zenhom Nicole Baldinu Sean D'Souza John Lee Dumas  Jordan Harbinger   Now you may not be a podcaster, but if you advertise or market yourself or your business in anyway, then this applies. If your message says your business is modern, upbeat and friendly, then you had better make sure that's how your team behave, answer the phone and greet your customers, otherwise your business will suffer.
