The raging waters of Rio Claro, in Colombia reminded recently of of the Amazon River. And currently, the river of life itself, which is as wild and unpredictable as the Amazon, has shown us, in the state of Texas which I call home, that the power of flowing water is as brutal as it is life-sustaining and necessary. Then, as promised, I take you back to Casablanca, in Morocco, and share the magnificence of the Hassan II Mosque. One of its most prevalent ornaments, Muqarnas, remind me of Victorias Amazonicas. Both images celebrate the symmetries and repetitive structures in nature, evoking the sacred mathematics so representative of Islamic art and architecture. Yet, even the majestic Hassan II Mosque has been affected by the passage of time and the elements.  Water, the memory of the dead fawn and the roar of nature's power aim to remind us all that everything in existence is a container and then a contributor to the all encompassing web of life.

Here's a conundrum that has captivated scientists: when Earth formed 4.5 billion years ago, our planet was essentially a ball of molten rock. Any water that might have been present during the planet's formation would surely have boiled away immediately. Yet today, water covers about 70% of Earth's surface. So where did all this water come from? And more intriguingly, when did it arrive? Listener Bill in the USA wants to know, and Presenter Caroline Steel is after answers. Assistant Professor Muhammad Abdul Latif is an early earth physicist at United Arab Emirates University. He explains how his modelling has helped us to understand when water first appeared in our universe. The early earth was not a water-friendly place - a hellscape of molten rock, volcanic eruptions and constant bombardments from comets and asteroids, with high levels of solar radiation. These conditions would have evaporated the water. And according to Professor Richard Greenwood at Open University, our earth's molten iron core would have been a ball of rust if there had been water in the proto-earth mix. So if the water hasn't always been here, where did it come from? At the Natural History Museum in London, Professor Sara Russell has been comparing the isotopic "fingerprint" of Earth's water with water found in the asteroid Bennu, captured and brought back by the recent Osiris Rex NASA mission. It's a good match for earth's water, but could it really be the answer to our question? “So I think that part of colonialism for Indigenous peoples has been this idea that Indigenous peoples aren't thinking peoples and that we don't have thought on a kind of systemic level. One of the things that I was interested in doing is intervening in that because I think Indigenous people have a lot of beautiful, very intellectual, theoretical contributions to make to the world. A lot of our theory is encoded in story, but a lot of our theory is also encoded in land-based practice. You can't learn about it from reading books or from going to lectures. There is a subtle yet powerful grip that beliefs have over our lives, and it is a potent practice of love and devotion to begin hunting for them and unraveling them. There is a quote that shifted everything for me: ‘You can have your beliefs, just don't believe in them.” This one line opened the door to deeper spiritual exploration, helping me realize that many of the things I thought were “me” were actually inherited, conditioned, or reactive responses I constructed to keep me safe. There are beliefs shaped by childhood, trauma, and nervous system responses, that can linger in the background of our psyches quietly dictate how we relate to everything from love to work, family to self-worth. Learning how to shift into “right relationship” (Ayni) and understanding that giving and receiving exist in sacred mutual reciprocity, is the key to moving through life less in control and more in connection. Previous episodes in our AI series have focused on the evolving features of artificial intelligence itself: its potential to democratize education and to improve city planning and weather forecasting. In this final installment, we examine its costs: the accelerating resource demands of AI and other data-intensive technologies.  Maya Chari, this year's Ten Across + APM Research Lab data journalism fellow, recently investigated the true water and energy costs associated with data center facilities in the Phoenix metro area— now on track to become the second largest market in the U.S. Though granular industrial data can be difficult to come by, Maya located a report submitted by Microsoft to City of Goodyear officials, stating that one of their proposed data centers would use as much potable water each year as 670 homes. Amplified across the 140 other data centers currently dotting the state of Arizona alone, the scale of such consumption becomes clearer.  As data centers rapidly multiply in response to market demand around the world—often preferring arid places like the water-stressed U.S. Southwest—critical questions are pressed about whether and how such development can be sustained.    In back-to-back conversations in this episode, we'll hear from experts involved in managing and reducing the impact of the physical infrastructure behind our digitized lives. Bobby Olsen, chief planning, strategy, and sustainability executive at the Arizona electric and water utility Salt River Project, describes planning to meet staggering levels of projected energy demand. In this episode of She's Not Done Yet: Conversations with women over 50, I (Becky Berry) talk with author Mary Ann Noe. This is a return visit for Mary Ann. We previously talked about her books A Handful of Pearls and Water the Color of Slate. In this episode we talk about one of the books she was finishing up at the time of the last interview. Mary Ann is the embodiment of She's Not Done Yet. She's in her late 70's and is publishing a book a year. Talk about not being done yet! We talked about Mary Ann's book Deserving of Murder: A Lynn and Alfred Tale. The Lynn and Alfred are Lynn Fontane and Alfred Lunt, one of the most famous acting teams of all time. The setting of the book is at their home, Ten Chimneys, in Wisconsin, where Mary Ann serves as a docent. The book is set in the winter of 1947 when there was a massive blizzard in Wisconsin. The unbelievable amounts of snow lend an additional air of mystery to the book. In our chat we talk about Ten Chimneys as a character in the book (there's a room that has 6 doors) and there are cabins and a pool and all sorts of places where bad things can happen. Mary Ann shares great stories about Lynn and Alfred and Ten Chimneys, and how she used her knowledge of the building to create a compelling read. I found out I'm not the only person who had trouble identifying the killer! And that inevitably brings up each person's abandonment issues as well as feelings of being inadequate and overwhelmed by what life requires of us.
