There is a secret battle going on right now in Washington with our Government trying to give away our freedoms to a United Nation's Agency. We break down what the hell is going on. Dovetailing nicely John Kerry was nice enough to speak at the WEF and tell us our pesky First Amendment Rights are getting in their way. Last week a Congress member released numbers straight from Homeland Security of criminal illegals released into this and their crimes are mind blowing. Again, Trump was right. Speaking of illegals we have a knew one and it'll rip your face off and eat you. Seriously! Plus the Mailbag sparks conversation about Tim Walz and what is going on in space. We'll round out the show with Weird News that had Denton rolling.

New factories, a new logistics facility, a new sustainability initiative, a new management board, a new tech centre, company acquisitions and a host of new products planned for launch at the AMB show in September – the recent Ceratizit press conference was a real eye-opener. The manufacturer has invested hundreds of millions of Euros in its infrastructure since MTD magazine last visited its European facilities in 2019 and the transformation has been truly remarkable. By Rhys Williams. As one of the world's leading cutting tool manufacturers, you would expect a level of re-investment to maintain a robust growth trajectory and industry-leading position, but what we found at Ceratizit last month was a seismic shift with new factories popping up at pace. Starting our whistle-stop tour across the German border in Reutte, the Austrian birthplace of the Plansee Group back in 1921, the rate of evolution was evident. Kicking off the event with a presentation was Melissa Albeck; one of the three members of the ‘all-new' executive board. Setting the tone for things to come, Melissa informed the press of the 14 company acquisitions since 2002, an overview of the new board structure and the new production site in Kreckelmoos on the outskirts of Reutte. It was evident the change was rapid and there was more to come….There are also two new buildings in Kempten, Southern Germany, a new production site in Bulgaria and another in Poland, the introduction of additively manufactured carbide grades, the arrival of connACT – the new sustainability strategy with a roadmap to carbon neutrality, the Product Carbon Footprint and the upGRADE range of recycled carbide grades that includes the CT-GS20Y grade that will be presented at AMB in September. As a journalist with massive overwhelm and too many exciting things to cover, there's only one place to start – at the beginning… Following the presentation that whetted the appetite for what was to come, we toured the Reutte carbide manufacturing plant partially flattened by a catastrophic fire in 1996. From this disaster rose opportunity, a chance for Ceratizit to switch from acetone to water for its carbide manufacturing process – and the group is the only manufacturer in the world that applies this environmentally beneficial process to its 75 different grades of carbide produced at this site. With more than 2,800 different types of carbide tools and 6,800 different insert designations manufactured at Reutte, the company produces more than 80,000 carbide inserts every day from this one production site. Even in this longstanding facility, investment has been significant in new tungsten processing silos, pressure sintering plants as well as CVD and PVD coating technology and furnaces with specialist chemical processes for breaking down used carbide for recycling.  Much of the technology on show in Reutte was explained in more detail through afternoon presentations that were broken down into sustainability, innovation and additive manufacturing updates – all supplemented by live demonstrations.  Leading the Sustainability Drive Sustainability has become interwoven into the fabric of manufacturing and a push towards carbon neutrality is a long-term aim for most companies. The foresight Ceratizit applies to its growth strategy also incorporates its green credentials. The company has acquired Tikomet, GTP and Stadler in recent years – companies located in the US and Europe that recycle tungsten carbide. These businesses are foundation blocks in the company's drive to create a circular economy model for carbide. Subsidiaries across both continents are collecting cutting tools from customers with incentivised discounting that is claimed to see upwards of 87% of Ceratizit's carbide now entering the recycling chain. Ceratizit is continually reducing its mining of raw materials. The aim is to increase its share of raw materials remaining in the carbide production chain to over 95% by 2030 – a figure based on scrap recycling of sintered products.   The recycling model is proving a huge success with the company already ahead of its target to reduce CO2 emissions from the 2020 baseline figure of 191,000 tonnes by 35% by 2025. With targets to reduce this by 60% by 2030 and 90% by 2040, Ceratizit isn't only leading the way with this drive, it is setting new standards. This was presented with the company's new ‘Product Carbon Footprint' (PCF) – the first VDMA-verified standard for calculating and classifying the carbon footprint of carbide products. The new classification will provide customers with the carbon footprint journey and impact of their cutting tools, something that Ceratizit is tirelessly calculating for all its 64,000+ standard product lines. This information for all standard products is expected to be completed and available for presentation at the AMB show in September. Furthermore, as the company continues its sustainability drive, the PCF of each product will constantly be reclassified to demonstrate the ever-diminishing impact of products on the environment.  Pivotal to hitting its aggressive targets in the sustainability journey is a strategy to target every aspect of the business. This includes a switch to green energy, the introduction of green hydrogen, recycled packaging with 60% less CO2, solar parks introduced in India and Luxembourg, the 3D printing of carbide grades and much more. Investment Drive With fascinating insights into the transformation at the Reutte plant and a glimpse at everything from new products, sustainability, additive manufacturing and R&D; our afternoon trip consisted of a visit to the new Kreckelmoos facility in Tyrol on the outskirts of Reutte. This put the scale of the investment strategy into perspective. When you see the building from the outside, you might think it is a new hotel at first glance. A beautifully designed wooden facade, large windows reflecting the surrounding mountain landscape and lots of greenery. But what at first appears to be a wellness resort is a production facility built for the future. Ceratizit started construction on the site in 2019 and this was completed just over a year ago. With a gross floor area of 45,000sq/m and an overall manufacturing site of 370,000m3, the new facility won the German Design Award 2024 for ‘Excellent Architecture', an award that that recognises innovative and sustainable design developments. With its innovative energy concept, it sets an important foundation for a more sustainable future – in line with Ceratizit's corporate sustainability strategy. Comprising production halls, storage and logistics areas, offices and social rooms for over 300 employees, the site manufactures carbide tools, coating materials for displays, electrodes for glass melting and components for the semiconductor industry and medical technology.  The story of the new building began more than six years ago under the premise of growing further at the location in Reutte. But where? After an intensive search, a suitable building site was found on a former landfill site. The Breitenwang neighbourhood of Kreckelmoos is only one kilometre away from the main site in Reutte. The planning and concept phase was followed by the tendering process and finally the start of construction in March 2019. The moving-in process began in January 2023 and is expected to continue until the second half of 2024. This was evident with large areas of the facility still awaiting production equipment installation during the tour. Winning the German Design Award 2024, the site has an energy-efficient concept brought to reality with the use of thermal groundwater, heat pumps and photovoltaic systems. The 15,000sq/m extensively greened roof of the production hall also contributes to low energy consumption. This modern three-story building is also visually impressive. The visible timber supporting structure made of local spruce is particularly eye-catching. Using this naturally renewable building material has enabled low-emission construction, which perfectly fits in with the sustainability strategy. Supply Chain After a visit to a brand-new manufacturing facility, you'd typically think that you have seen the highlight of the trip, but in true Ceratizit fashion, the company raised the bar by organising a visit to the new logistics, distribution and supply chain centre in Kempten. Across the border in Southern Germany, MTD magazine visited the Kempten distribution centre in 2019 where plans were afoot for a new facility. Five years later, MTD magazine returned to see the new state-of-the-art logistics centre that was opened on Valentines Day 2021.  In the aftermath of Brexit, many UK manufacturers had valid concerns over supply chain continuity – an issue that never really surfaced for businesses working with Ceratizit. Credit to its slick supply-chain strategy and huge investment in the new site, over 65% of Ceratizit's European manufacturing output is delivered to more than 74 countries via the Kempten facility with 99% next-day delivery. Fundamentally quashing supply chain concerns. Whilst the previous site was a sight to behold and akin to an Amazon warehouse, the new facility takes automation to a new plateau. The new building has a footprint of around 17,000sq/m, which is similar to the previous site. However, with 99% automation, the new facility currently ships more products with less staff than the previous site – despite running at just 60% capacity. In numbers, the new site ships more than 24,000kg of products every day. This equates to upward of 90,000 product parcels being shipped to more than 4,000 customers with an average order value of over €500.  The level of automation at the new facility now sees 125 staff pick over 400 product parcels per hour compared to the previous 60 picks per hour, demonstrating the efficiency of the new site. With over 3500 boxes leaving the facility daily, it has a shuttle system that collects, stores and sorts more than 700 parcels that are delivered to the site daily from production sites around Europe. Undertaking this mammoth task, products are automatically added to and then collected from a 31-level holding area - each level is 60m in length with room for significant expansion to add to its current 400,000 storage spaces. From the colossal shuttle system, products are automatically delivered to specific picking locations where the staff operate under completely ‘fail-safe' parameters and where quality checks, as well as packaging, labelling and shipping tasks are undertaken. Dovetailing into this facility are standard and special products from the unfathomably diverse product portfolio and brands within the group as well as carbide products manufactured by Ceratizit for many of its competitors across Europe. Upstream from the slick logistics centre, Ceratizit has continually enhanced its customer-centric position with advanced technology that identifies customer behaviour and purchasing patterns. This ranges from the 24/7 tool supply via vending machines to complete e-commerce solutions that connect directly to customer ERP systems to expedite the procurement process – a behind-the-scenes investment that now sees special products manufactured and delivered in less than 3 weeks.  In the next issue of MTD magazine, we'll continue our insightful look behind the scenes of Ceratizit and its activities in Europe. We will also take a closer look at some of the exciting new product lines that will be arriving in the autumn. There are a multitude of product launches planned for the AMB show in September, so make sure you pick up our July issue to find out more.

Ferrari director Michael Mann and cast members Adam Driver, Penélope Cruz, and Gabriel Leone discuss diving deep into projects, the complexities of the Ferrari family, and competitive racing with NYFF Artistic Director Dennis Lim at the Closing Night press conference. Michael Mann (The Insider) brings his astonishing command of technique and storytelling to bear on this emotional, elegantly crafted dramatization of the life of the legendary car manufacturer and entrepreneur Enzo Ferrari at a professional and personal fulcrum. It's 1957, and the marriage of Enzo (Adam Driver, in an artfully internalized performance) and Laura (Penélope Cruz, a ferocious revelation) has begun to irrevocably fracture as a result of his philandering and the tragic recent death of their young son. Their unsettled domestic world is on a collision course with his work life as Enzo faces a pair of major turning points: financial pressure to increase productivity, which means going against his long-standing desire to only produce race cars, and preparations for the treacherous cross-country open-road Mille Miglia race. Dovetailing these narrative strands, Mann effortlessly shifts gears between elegiac and spectacular, climaxing in an exhilarating and terrifying race across the Northern Italian landscape—a visual and aural wonder of revving machinery against bucolic splendor—that ranks with the greatest set pieces of Mann's career. Aided by a magnificent cast, which also includes Shailene Woodley, Gabriel Leone, Patrick Dempsey, and Jack O'Connell, and glorious on-location shooting in Ferrari's hometown of Modena, Mann has constructed a marvel of classical cinema. A Neon release. NYFF61 Closing Night is presented by Campari.

Do you want to live a more CREATIVE life?  On this episode, I talk with Chair Whimsy founder Wendy Conklin.  She is a designer, an artisan, an educator and an entreprenista.   A visionary thought leader, Wendy is leading a MOVEMENT to live more creatively.  Her brand includes custom chairs, online courses, business retreats and more. Wendy's new book is entitled  Life Whimsy: How to Think, Play and Work more Creatively.   WENDY'S BIOMany people dream about making their passion project their career but few are able to turn their dreams into reality. Enter Wendy Conklin, who transformed her hobby into a powerhouse brand, Chair Whimsy, inspiring clients the world over to bring a sense of whimsy and joy into their living spaces. Wendy was an educational consultant, busy writing books and helping teachers implement the latest in teaching techniques. While she enjoyed her job, she felt there was something missing from her career. She'd always had a creative streak but wasn't sure how to incorporate it into a lucrative business. In 2012, she took an upholstery course and was hooked.  It wasn't long before friends began asking Wendy to help them “zhuzh” up their homes. Realizing she was onto something, she opened an Etsy store, offering custom refurbishing of antiques and flea-market finds. Before long, Wendy found herself juggling her full-time job and the Etsy store, to the point something had to give. She realized that her misery as an employee was greater than the fear of becoming an entrepreneur. Springing into action, she took out a loan, asked for a six month leave of absence from work and set out to make her hobby a viable business. Within two days, she knew she could never return to her job and with the determination to make this new venture a success, she dug in.Traction came quickly but in order to really make her new business soar, she knew she needed some outside advice and began working with a business coach. Contrary to popular belief that offering more options is the key to success, she niched down to a single focus - chairs. Wendy always had an artistic bend and by deciding to play by her own rules of fun, joy and lots of color, her Chair Whimsy brand caught flight, capturing the imaginations of clients around the world. In addition to her custom refurbished chairs, she expanded her line to include a collection of her unique designs made by artisans in Italy as well as fabric selection services. In 2020, Wendy introduced her first course, DIY Upholstery, to teach others the joy of creating their own works of art. The response prompted her to create five more courses: Styling with the Chair Stylist, Sourcing Swoon-Worthy Fabrics, Fabric Mixology, Just the Bottoms, and The Business of Chairs. Dovetailing with the pandemic, the courses struck a nerve with thousands of women looking to learn a new skill while brightening up their homes. In under 18 months, sales for the courses hit over $500k. Encouraged by Wendy's enthusiasm and gentle instructions to play, create and not worry about somebody else's rules, these “Whimsies” are living the Chair Whimsy motto of “create the life you desire and a home that inspires you to live more creatively.”Wendy lives in a personality-filled home in Round Rock, Texas with her husband, two daughters and little furry friend Maui, where she enjoys greenhouse gardening, mixing tasty cocktails and renovating motorhome as the “Camper Revamper.”Discover more at: https://chairwhimsy.com/Check out our Season 1 interview here.  Support the show

Welcome to the podcast! Today we are talking with Fred Stacey about his experiences in call centers, both helping to build them and helping them in recovery. Dovetailing nicely with our Agent-Centric Call Center Philosophy is the objective today to discuss Employee Experience. What can we still do to enhance the work life of our employees? How can we engage with them and support them? What's working and not working? What can technology to do serve them as they engage with customers each and everyday. For example, gamification adoption is at about 20% even though it's been around 10 years. What is the ideal role of technology in supporting employee experience? Topics discussed in this episode: [ 3:28 - 3:57 ] For call centers in recovery invest in mid-level leadership; we're talking about floor-level leadership. It's shocking how many c-suite executives have never taken a call in their call center. [ 11:14 - 12:25 ] People here in America are in for a rude awakening when it comes to the costs of running call centers. Fred Stacey fears that companies, right after making any necessary cuts in marketing will then turn and make cuts in service and support. Wait times creep back up and customers and employees alike will feel the strain. [ 13:04 - 13:37 ] Taking a positive viewpoint, we ought to start viewing the entire cx operation as an opportunity for positive business outcomes! [16:06 - 17:23 ] Agents receive a ton of information that is coming from a human perspective, but we should also gather the structured and unstructured data that never makes it way up to the c-level executives. Teach leadership how to engage with agents to find out what they know. [ 27:17 - 28:06 ] Fred Stacey has been a witness to call center global expansion in the Caribbean, later-stage India, Latin America, South America, and early-stage Philippines. In these locations call center employment is a very good position. It's a fact that companies that focus on employee experience always perform better. Call centers aren't just a necessary evil or a cost we must sustain to do business. The truth is call centers are the easiest way to access positive business outcomes. Make sure your leaders have the skills to connect with their agents. The only thing that's missing is recognizing the agents in this process. Today we start off discussing an email released just yesterday. Remember the border patrol agent flap for supposedly whipping migrants? Remember Joe Biden saying they were going to get to the bottom of it and DHS Alejandro Mayorkas calling it horrifying and choosing to liken it to slavery and racism? We knew at the time, the photographer whose picture we saw splashed on every magazine, social media post and talking head program said there was no whipping, but it didn't stop the narrative from the White House. We know the investigation came out a few months ago showing nothing. Now, we learn DHS Secretary Mayorkas received an email 2 1/2 hours prior to that first press briefing that the agents had done nothing wrong. Thanks to a Freedom of Information request, we know they chose to throw those agents under the bus. And, not just them, but their families and the entirety of the Border Patrol. They knowingly lied to the American people all for political expediency. Dovetailing on that discussion is the ongoing bombshell dropped by a Pfizer Director in front of an investigatory panel of the European Parliament. After all of the edicts, bluster, mandates and smear campaigns, we finally learn Pfizer never tested if their vaccine prevented the spread of Covid-19. Just like with the Border Patrol story, they knowingly lied in order to gain conformity. Those who chose to not comply were part of the biggest discrimination scandals in modern history. MEP Rob Roos was on the Tucker Carlson show to discuss the shocking testimony further. In a press conference held this morning, another MEP, Cristian Terhes expressed similar shock and is now concerned about what else is being hidden from their questions? Last night, President Joe Biden was interviewed, one-on-one, by CNN's Jake Tapper. At one point, the President said he did not believe we are headed for a recession and if it were to happen, it would be just a little bit and would end. Now, where have we heard that sort of prediction before? Oh, yeah, they all said the same thing over a year ago regarding rising inflation. The patterns are repeating themselves right before our very eyes. But, we should just blindly trust them this time, right? Why would they lie about this? The midterms are now less than a month away and it is critical the Republicans gain control of Congress so, at the very least, they can begin to remove these criminal liars from their positions of power. We have to get back to following our Constituion as a Republc. We must abandon the current direction the Left is taking us toward their Authoritarian utopia, for the sake of our freedoms and for the future of our nation. Ultimately, the most critically important first step is to screen for violence during interface with any pregnant person. 44% of all women in the United States report experiencing unwanted sexual contact. However, in spite of this significantly high rate, currently, only 16% of nurses report regularly screening for violence. The CDC's national and annual examinations of pregnancy and homicide have been lauded by public health experts for recognizing this pervasively overlooked phenomenon. Dovetailing with the Healthy People 2030 objective/target regarding the reduction of physical abuse of assaults by a current or former intimate partner for people aged 12 years or older (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services [USDHHS], 2020, it is imperative for nurses and other care providers to expand their awareness of this often overlooked group in significant need for targeted and consistent assessment and referral. EPISODE #2.4:  The Heart of Law with David Selby & Todd Mathews Two courtroom heroes in the mass tort world, David Selby and Todd Mathews share the mic with Mirena Umizaj in this season's fourth episode. The show starts in full swing as the partners at Bailey Glasser LLP share their stories and humble origins ... Todd recounts the impact of a kind family and the local church during his early teen years. Despite his plans to become a Southern Baptist preacher, he found his true calling in the courtroom. Through the justice system's pulpit, Todd has aimed to make a difference in people's lives. Specializing in injury claims for almost 20 years, his reputation as "a master-of-all-trades" (as Mirena puts it) made him adept at handling almost any case under the sun—all in the name of serving others. Now distinctly aware of his morality, Todd describes how his worldview shifted. We hear how the murder of his dear friend and colleague, Randy Gori, shook him to his very core.  Meanwhile, David unpacks how his career began at the district attorney's office, immediately entrenched in jury trials. Eventually becoming Division Chief of Alabama's Violent Crimes Division allowed him to have a "unique perspective to the whole jury system." After subsequently gravitating toward defense and plaintiff work, he and his friend opened a firm in 1999. Soon their practice, Kee & Selby LLP, grew to have about 12 partners in a few years. As David's fame grew in the legal industry, like-mined colleagues asked him to come aboard Bailey Glasser. And the rest is history. We learn how Todd and David's paths crossed as they began serving on the Executive Committee of the Atrium Hernia Mesh Multidistrict Litigation. Both share a common philosophy and pursuit: they look after the underdog. We hear their compassioned plight for their clients—victims who struggle to survive who are just "living out their unfortunate story." Shifting gears, when asked by Mirena to reflect on the evolution of the legal industry in the last decade, without hesitation, Todd says: "One of the best things that [has] happen[ed] in the last ten years is the focus that has been put on female attorneys … minority attorneys getting opportunities to lead MDLs to have a significant impact." Dovetailing the insight, David remarks on the increasing resources clients and firms now enjoy. During the deep dive, David and Todd center on the breaking news about the horrendous Johnson & Johnson (JNJ.N) bankruptcy ruling. At the case's front and center, they dissect the intricacies of how the corporation side-stepped any settlement claims. They expound on how JNJ.N received the protection of U.S. Bankruptcy Court Judge Michael Kaplan, bringing about the titanic loss of plaintiffs all over America. As David perplexingly puts it, the "stroke of a pen … eviscerated everybody's right to a jury trial."  While the tireless pursuit of correcting mammoth wrongs brought about by the talc conglomerate continues, the duo doesn't rest. New cases to win and more plaintiffs to protect await them. If we see what they see on the frontlines, we'd likely do the same. EPISODE SURVEY 00:12:20 - 00:13:40 How Todd and David became friends  00:14:05 - 00:18:20 Todd's life highlights 00:22:53 - 00:27:55 David's Words of Wisdom  00:28:20 - 00:31:02 Todd's insight into diversity in the legal field 00:44:33 - 00:52:09 Synopsis of Johnson and Johnson trial 01:02:58 - 01:07:42 David's analysis of J&J Bankruptcy case legal argument 01:23:41 - 01:26:30 Todd's thanks to his support system QUOTABLE QUOTES David Selby: People ask all the time: “ What's the reason for your [firm's] growth and how is it planned? ” … We don't have a defined growth pattern ... When there are talented lawyers that we know we want to be with and be doing work with, we go and get them.  There are good stories and there are bad stories, but everybody's life has a story. You don't know what it is. So be careful how quickly you judge people, regardless of how well they appear to have things together ... If we all do what we want to do and do it well, work follows. At the end of the day, the jury trial system is the bedrock of our nation's justice system.  The unsung heroes are our families.  Todd Matthews: Take time to enjoy things in life ... identify those people in your life that are really important and make sure that they know how important they are. I don't know how much longer I've got on is Earth, but I'm going to enjoy it while I'm here. One great thing I've seen happen in the last 10 years is the focus that has been put on female and minority attorneys getting opportunities to lead MDLs … to have a significant impact, to be elevated to judges, [and] be the judges that are handling these large MDL dockets. Our number one most important goal should always, always be the client. And if it's not, then I question your motivation for being a lawyer… there are no ifs, and's, or buts about it. The last six years of practicing law have been extremely enjoyable because I get to work with my best friend. It's life-changing ... I do things is different now. The way I think about cases [and] the way I approach cases is different, and it's because of that relationship. "If we feel secure, the world is at our feet. We can take risks, be creative, and pursue our dreams." —Amir Levine, M.D. and Rachel S.F. Heller, M.A., authors of Attached: The New Science of Adult Attachment and How It Can Help You Find—and Keep—Love Until we know the priceless gift of peace security in relationships of any type bring into our everydays, it can seem unfathomable to trust such peace is possible. On the flip-side, if all that we have ever known due to the good fortunate of our upbringing with secure, loving parents and community is a life and way of being that enables us to try, explore, and soar, then it isn't until we meet someone or try to engage with someone who is insecure that we realize the awesomeness of being secure in a relationship. During the height of the pandemic lockdowns, a book that was published in 2010 hit record sales as those in relationships sought advice on how to strengthen their relationships, those desiring a relationship inquired how to be and find and build a secure relationship and wherever else readers may have fallen on the continuum of wondering about relationships picked up the book Attached.: The new sequence of adult attachment and how it can help you find—and keep—love by Dr. Amir Levin and Rachel S.F. Heller. Without the tools or knowledge to understand what feeling and behaving in a secure way might be, we do our best to navigate the emotions that naturally arise when we take the risk of meeting someone knew and intertwining two different people's lives into one, yet hoping to ensure contentment for both. However, if we don't know ourselves well, don't know how to communicate clearly, yet kindly and without harm, and our partner doesn't either know themselves well or doesn't communicate effectively, how are we know what works for the two individuals involved? The good news for all of us is that having a Secure attachment style can be learned. We are not born with or without it. We are taught or modeled different attachment styles during childhood and then through adulthood; the key is to be aware and knowledgeable of each, and to acquire and practice the skills of being Secure. And as for seeking out a partner, become a secure adult enables to understand what is shown from those we consider entering into a relationship with so that we choose wisely and engage in a healthy manner to put the odds in our favor of finding and keeping a healthy, loving relationship. "Time and again, research shows that the best predictor of happiness in a relationship is a secure attachment style." Benefits of being a secure individual in life and in relationships: high levels of relationship satisfaction high levels of commitment in relationships high levels of trust in relationships What are the characteristics of a secure individual? First, it is important to note that you cannot determine simply by looking at someone that they are secure. Simply because someone is friendly, likable and sociable does not mean they are secure. The author adamantly refutes the belief that a secure individual can be determined by their "charm, composure and/or self-confidence. As with other attachment styles, personality or physical traits won't give secures away. Secure people fit almost every description across the personality spectrum." But back to the question: what are the characteristics of a secure individual? "(1) They are programmed to expect their partners to be loving and responsive and (2) don't worry much about losing their partner's love. (3) They feel extremely comfortable with intimacy and closeness and (4) have an uncanny ability to communicate their needs and (5) respond to their partners' needs." I picked up the book early this fall after reading an article in The New York Times by Foster Kamer. While I had heard of the three, technically four different types of attachment styles, I had never deeply explored them to fully understand them. Of course, being, feeling and engaging with Secure attachment styles sounded to me to be a no-brainer, but I knew I didn't always fall into that category . . . and I wanted to. For the sake of my own well-being, but also for all relationships I was part of, especially an intimate, romantic relationship, I chose to pick up the book and become a student. Guessing how to be Secure didn't seem to me to be a recipe for success, so I chose to be a student, purchased the book, and have since read it three times, re-reading certain sections based on what I needed to more fully understand. Once I read the book I knew I wanted to bring it to listeners of the podcast and readers of TSLL blog, so today, I will be sharing 13 skills and insights for becoming a Secure adult in relationships. By no means is what I share with you today the full breadth and depth of what the book details, so I highly recommend, if this topic interests you, to pick up the book. Let's get started. ~Note to Readers: Be sure to tune in to the audio version as each point listed below is discussed in detail, content that is not included in the written post. 1. Understand the Dependency Paradox "Does [being programmed to connect with someone special] mean that in order to be happy in a relationship we need to be joined with our partner at the hip or give up other aspects of our life such as our careers or friends? Paradoxically, the opposite is true! It turns out that the ability to step into the world on our own often stems from the knowledge that there is someone beside us who we can count on—this is the "dependency paradox". (p. 29) "If you want to take the road to independence and happiness, find the right person to depend on and travel down it with that person. Once you understand this, you've grasped the essence of attachment theory." 2. Understand your current attachment style (it can change, it is not permanent) "Attachment styles are stable but plastic. Knowing your specific attachment profile will help you understand yourself better and guide you in your interactions with others. Ideally this will result in more happiness in your relationships." Know thyself. A common refrain here on TSLL blog and podcast, but the truth is you need to know where you are now in order to acquire the correct instructions to arrive at your desired destination. 3. Learn how to effectively communicate your needs - be clear and kind "[Secure individuals] are able to sensitively and empathetically—and most importantly, coherently—discuss their emotions". Speaking at someone is different than speaking with someone, and how we speak with someone will determine the potential for our needs to be heard. To speak with kindness is to be inoffensive and to "not put your partner on the spot". Use "I feel" statements or "I need" statements to express why you wish to share what you are sharing. The practice of effective communication stretches across all types of relationships and it is never too early or too late to start. Often our goal in communicating is to gain what we desire, but the truth is, we may not immediately gain what we desire, but we will at least become clear about who can or cannot be what we need or give us what we need. Of course, immediate actions from our partner, friend, child or boss doesn't mean they cannot or won't be able to as sometimes it takes time to process, to work on logistics, etc., but if you don't effectively and kindly communicate your needs, no one will know them. "Effective communication is the quickest, most direct way to determine whether your prospective partner will be able to meet your needs." 4. Don't play games 5. Refrain from engaging in the 'relationship dance' Defined as 'one partner getting closer while the other steps back in order to maintain a certain distance in the relationship at all times', with a secure partner you don't step too closely too quickly, simply at a steady and reasonable pace that the two people involved feel comfortable moving. There is no rushing as there is a groundedness in one's self and a secure person is "comfortable with closeness" and isn't afraid to step forward once they know themselves and who they are stepping toward or someone they want to get to know better. This is not to say a secure person knows it will work out, but rather they have a sense of steady assurance in themselves and that what they give is real and worth exploring. ~Post to explore: 10 Ways to Strengthen Your Self-Worth 6. View "sex and emotional intimacy as one" Distance is created when the two are separated. Again, such a view speaks to the ability to be comfortable with closeness once both partners have been vulnerable beyond the bedroom as they get to know each other and are drawn to each other beyond the physical chemistry. 7. Responsive and expect it in return (remember, no games) Having communicated their needs and listening sincerely to their partner's needs, the reciprocity of responsiveness rather than dismissal strengths the trust and intimate connection. 8. Be available Physically and emotionally being present for your partner is the action of a secure individual. When we communicate our needs and tend to them as well as observe our partner is responsive to our needs, we in turn are also showing up and making ourselves available. 9. Support without interference "Provide behind-the-scenes-support for [your partner's] endeavors." Allowing your partner to pursue what they are passionate about, helping without over-taking or taking the credit so that their gifts shine is the support of a secure individual. As a secure individual you are helping because you want to support your partner, yet are securely tending to your own passions and need no spotlight, need not be in control, rather only present to help as needed without being recognized by anyone other than your partner. 10. Understand there are many potential partners 11. Don't feel a need to act defensively or punish In other words, secure individuals can see a situation more objectively. They can effectively diffuse the conflict, observe in their partner what really provoked their outburst or anger, and not add fuel to the fire. 12. More likely to step into a healthy relationship We must keep in mind that a secure individual tends to be savvy in their partner selection. It doesn't mean if you are secure, you will always select a secure partner, but through clear and effective communication as the getting to know you phase unfolds, you can observe red flags early-on and find the right partner more easily. I didn't say quickly, but does help you not step forward too far with someone who would not be the right person. 13. Expects to be treated with respect, dignity and love Dovetailing with #12, a secure person begins any relationship with effectively communicating their needs which is why knowing yourself highly benefits the ability to choose a partner to begin to get to know. The fundamental foundation piece for a healthy relationship is believing, yes, knowing, you are worthy of respect because you extend it in your everyday life. When you present yourself to a potential partner holding yourself in a space of self-respect, knowing you deserve to be treated with dignity and love, then you can quickly discern to whom to begin engaging with and whom to walk away from. Of course, even as this book points out, research findings change with hindsight, time and more examination, and it is never wise to take an entire book at face-value but rather to read with a critical mind and discerning objectivity. However, what I am confident you will find is that no matter what your relationship status when you apply the tools and skills explored and taught in this book, you will find a deeper peace and inner calm that you may not have had prior to including them in your life. After all, at the core of the definition of contentment is to find a peace within no matter what is swirling about outside of you. How we choose to engage, what we step forward toward and refrain from engaging in determines the quality of our lives, and if we apply the knowledge we have about ourselves and what we desire to cultivate in our everydays which absolutely, relationships play a significant role, we begin to realize the amazing gift we give ourselves when we become a secure adult. The Garrett Ashley Mullet Show

There is a kind of restraint which is good, appropriate, and wise. Self-control is the fruit of the Spirit. And how we should control ourselves is toward the end of saying what is true and doing what is right, and not saying what is false and not doing what is evil. But there is another kind of restraint which is a bit trickier, and it has everything to do with fearing man. In the first case, when we are led by the Spirit, we act out of a deep and abiding love for and faith in Christ. In the second, we make tactical decisions to avoid telling the whole truth, and we falter as we endeavor to act in ways we know we ought to because there will be a cost. Dovetailing off yesterday's episode, I want to delve deeper into my own personal insecurity. And in doing that, I find that I am not taking my anxieties and worries to the Lord as I ought to be. The truth and wisdom of God's Word warns us against casting pearls before swine or giving to dogs what is holy. Dave, a good friend of mine, reminded me of this in different words recently. Christ did not always answer his accusers and detractors. And neither do we need to always. Sometimes it is better to not answer a fool according to his folly lest you be like him, as the Proverbs say. Yet there is another way to answer a fool according to his folly which refuses to feed into his being wise in his own eyes. And sometimes that way of answering is to not give the foolish scoffer and agitator the satisfaction of any answer at all. Still other times, communicating frustration is appropriate. And that last bit may be the biggest thing I am struggling with from an interpersonal standpoint right now. When being "nice" is so faddish and fashionable in pop-Christian culture these days, it feels sometimes as though the worst sin you can commit is to be not that. And conveying frustration, disappointment, or even sadness at the conduct of those around us is seen as not nice. To be clear, we ought not to be irritable if we are going to be loving. But there is a difference between being irritated by an objective irritant and just being grouchy all the time. All the same, one of the insights the Lord is helping me to realize when I earnestly ask him for wisdom in these trying times is that curbing my own unnecessary and inappropriate irritation necessitates doing all I can about what is actually my part in all this. And having done all to stand, I need to accept that at a certain point it is appropriate to merely stand firm and wait on the Lord in peace and satisfaction and contentment, trusting in his ultimate goodness, faithfulness, and authority. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/support

What should we make of these responses to feminism in our day? And do they perhaps in part explain why fewer young people today are getting married and settling down to raise a family than in previous generations? Let us bravely embrace the risk of offending everyone except the Almighty by delving into these matters so we can discern what is good and true, and how men and women can and should live in peace and harmony with one another according to God's Word.

The Heart of Law

What happens when the esteemed godfather of mass torts, Howard Nations, decides to hit the town and shoot the breeze with Mirena? Well, of course, we stutter to a stop, sit mesmerized, and hang onto every perfect doctrine he sends our way! In The Heart of Law's third episode, our incisive host, Mirena Umizaj enjoys the riveting, first-hand account of Howard's stint as a US Army intelligence officer commissioned as a Russian translator—intercepting cryptic messages from a Soviet naval base in a northern island off Hokkaido, Japan. After eavesdropping on submarines, fleets, and every bit of water traffic for months, life in the military intelligence pretty much set the tone for the disciplined and purposeful life Howard led throughout his 55+ years practicing law. Howard gives copious, razor-sharp advice on how to survive in the cutthroat mass tort business. Ironically, resisting avarice and the “absolute disregard for money,”  with “total expulsion” of materialism charts the course to a successful outcome of a case. Dovetailing that ideology with mental fortitude, depositional ingenuity, strategic witness management, and profound procedural patience, he gives us a basic (even banal) formula of an honorable value-system tested by time. During half of the show, their conversation turns on a sober note as Howard and Mirena immerse us into the complex acquisition of mass tort cases, hundreds of millions of dollars depleted, ethical dilemmas, hedge fund controversies, conflict of interests, lead purchasing, and contentions within the industry. They touch on austere issues like gigantic med-tech and pharma companies distributing defective products, as well as disquieting financial games negatively affecting people's lives. Inversely, we have an awareness about the meaningful life Howard leads. We hear a deep love for his family, his plight for the weak (he is famed for representing over 300 pro bono cases), and three decades of passionately teaching law. We grasp how he fearlessly copes with a family tragedy, endearing us as he flouts every cynicism life thrusts his way. He shares his knowledge freely, exercises systematically, reads voraciously … all the while, managing to disarm us with his stalwart faith. What a testament to us all. People like Howard make living in this not-so-happy world so worthwhile.   EPISODE SURVEY  [00:07:02] In the U.S. Army Military Intelligence as a Russian linguist  [00:12:23] once tort reform happened in Texas, Howard adapted and reinvented himself, starting a mass tort firm and changing the entire game. [00:16:35] Howard officially declares himself to be a mass tort lawyer. [00:16:57] Adventures with Zyprexa and 78 depositions all over the country. [00:21:48] "And they said, 'We'll never pay you a thousand cases!' So I said, 'Okay; then pay me on 999.' " [00:41:58] On the Trial Lawyer's Summit and the  Entrepreneurship of Law. QUOTABLE QUOTES " The thing is, you have to have an absolute disregard for money because if you're worried about money, don't get in the mass tort business because [in the industry] there's a complete, total expulsion of money." "You have to be fearless because if you're not fearless, you'll worry yourself to death." "The outcomes are only as good as what you gather." "You have to have skillsets for a trial ... you have to have a lot of skills in depositions because depositions are a crucial part of mass torts." You have to be articulate with experts because choosing the right expert [and] getting them prepared … [and] keeping them under control is a major part of mass torts." The Victorian Christmas is a complex thing. In this merry episode we pull back the layers to expose great music, great events and great traditions of the time. Not surprisingly much of it has survived and it influences our Christmas today. For example, one of the great traditions of the era was sleigh rides. This was another holdover tradition from the 18th century but one that seemed to gain steam and attention in the quickly evolving media in the 19th century. That tradition gave rise to music associated with sleigh rides, most notably the song Jingle Bells. We explore the history of Jingle Bells and dispel the myth that the song only became popular after the advent of sound recordings. That’s just not true. The song was a hit out the gate and it quickly became a favorite of Christmas. We explain how that is true and why it matters in this episode. Curious enough, so much of the music of the Victorian Christmas was centered at Church. Even the very secular song of Jingle Bells debuted in a church. Churches were central to the celebration of Christmas in the 19th century. We explore why that is true and why it is important. Dovetailing with all these religious and cultural things of the 19th century was the overarching theme of the Magi. The Magi were a popular theme in song, in worship, in art, in stage plays and especially music. All of these is discussed in depth. There is a lot to learn about this time in Christmas history. And we’re not done yet. Part three discusses the rockstars of the 19th century and how all of them had ties to Christmas. We’re pleased to feature the music of the Gardiner Sisters in this episode and we’re grateful for their gracious contribution. Please visit them at this link to hear more of their music. Intro:  Wednesday always starts with Wendy Arthur and the OMG Report - Christianity with a Kick!  Wendy was addressing the accellerated rate at which Biblical Prophecy is coming true.  Also that laughter is great.  God loves humor.  We also talked about the loss of currency and money, and the dangers of a cash-less society as part of Biblical Prophecy. 34:00 - Chief Dan Sky Horse of the Santa Rosa Creek Tribe gives his report.  Dovetailing on Wendy, Dan talked about how the Creek, and tribes all over North and South America traded for thousands of years, all without money, or any currency.  It was the Europeans in relatively recent history that required money for exchange, instead of trade and barter for goods and services.  Then we talked about the Indian Head on the old test pattern, post on my Facebook page. 1:00:45 - Introducing Shannon Rice, the only member of the Milton, Florida, City Council to vote against the dictatorial powers of their Emergency Declaration, in which they gave themselves "all necessary authority" to handle the emergency.  First question, what emergency?  We don't really have a problem here.  There were lots of assurances that the City and police won't violate anyone's rights, but then they said they could to protect public safety.  That's not possible.  You can't do both. 1:21:30 - We then moved to a free for all wonderful discussion with Kyle from CA, Brian from PA, and Anthony from FL.

On the 30th episode of The Geek In Review, we talk with Debbie Ginsberg, Educational Technology Librarian at the Chicago-Kent Law Library. Debbie was recently quoted in law.com's "Where Are All the Women in Legal Tech?" So we cut right to the chase and ask that question to Debbie. She says that there are lots of women in legal tech, but that those putting on tech conferences need to take more action toward actively recruiting women for speaker and presenter opportunities. One profession where women are a majority, and are heavily involved in legal tech, is law librarians. The American Association of Law Libraries is approximately 75% women, and with the push toward knowledge management, analytics, competitive intelligence, and advancing the legal research and information tools, law librarians are an excellent resource when it comes to professionals in the legal tech market. Ginsberg also talks about the Women in Legal Tech Summit, held right before TechShow in Chicago. She mentions that there is an effort to expand the boundaries of women in legal tech beyond just women lawyers who are working in legal tech, and begin looking for other opportunities. Dovetailing nicely with that effort is Janders Dean, who is putting out a list of 180 highly qualified women speakers for legal tech on their Twitter page. And, Sarah Glassmeyer's crowdsourcing list of underrepresented people in legal tech and innovation. INFORMATION INSPIRATIONS Self-care isn't selfish and can actually help your performance - Author Jenna Cho interviews one of Jackson Walker's partners, Stephanie Sparks, who discusses how she was always waiting until the right time to take care of herself, and eventually realized that there was never a "right time" and she understood that she just had to make that time. Cho's article reminds us that we all need to take some time to listen to your body and mind, and remember that you can't take care of others if you don't first take care of yourself. Jason Barnwell gets a shout out from Marlene this week on his interview of Kate Ross. This Business of Law Podcast hits all the right buttons on the need for attorneys to collaborate and be transparent, not just with the good things, but how we need to show the warts and all. Greg points out Jason's comment that when it comes to culture in a legal environment, people shouldn't feel that they have "inherited someone else's shoes." This is a must listen for those looking at collaboration and better experiences for your organization. Marlene talks about how Zena Applebaum reminds us Humans are the Decision Makers… Data Isn't. And finally, Greg (and most librarians, historians, and researchers) aren't too happy with the Obama Presidential Library's plan to be an all-digital library. On this episode, we begin with an interview discussing 19th-century American politics. Our guest walks us through the rise of the Jacksonian Democratic party in the wake of the War of 1812 and walks us through how popular opinion and anti-Jackson sentiments led to the rise and fall of the Whig political party. Dovetailing off the discussion with Chris, we jump into Illinois politics and the formation of the Anti-Mormon political party to combat the growing power of the Saints in Nauvoo and Handcock County politics. The Mormons organize the Nauvoo Legion into a military parade for the 1841 4th of July celebration, which a number of politicians and dignitaries attended to show their support for the Mormons. Matt, say hi. Matt Kimberley: Hi. Matt Coffy: You are the best, man. We tried to do this yesterday, but apparently we were so strong in our mental processes we broke the internet. Matt Kimberley: I don’t think we should even mention it. I think we’re inviting fate to intervene once again if we say that we’ve been so lucky today we grazed internet. Matt Coffy: I know. Well, we had elephants, clowns, and all sorts of things yesterday. I think that was the issue. One of the things I love about Matt is that we’ve been in the past working together and we had a lot of great conversations. In fact, it was the beginning of my discussion around putting a book together. You and I had great discussions over this and I’m excited that this thing’s sort of in its way. One of the things you do really well is you are to me a performer. Like when I see you on stage, man, you take the audience with you. I think this comes from your experience. When you grew up, what were you doing to give this experience to people that you’ve got this sort of outgoing personality that just people want to watch? Matt Kimberley: Yeah. Misguided self-confidence comes up. I think if you ask my parents, they will definitely say that I was always the center of attention. I was always the person who was interested in having all the eyes on me, an attention whore basically. If they weren’t interested in me, then what could they possibly be interested in? It served me up until I got through the indestructible, bullet-proof self-confidence of youth and started to think about things more carefully and worry what people think about me and realize that there were consequences to my actions and things like that. But if the question, Matt, is how do you stand up on stage and bring the crowd with you, then I think certainly a little bit of self-confidence is required.  But that self-confidence can be manufactured and it comes with training and repetition rather like anything. If standing up on stage is a terrifying thing for you, then do it more frequently until it becomes less scary. Matt Coffy: I hear you. Your book, In A Grip, is forgetting about the namby-pamby, wishy-washy self-help drivel. It’s a great subtitle. I read it. I laughed. I cried. Matt Kimberley: Did you get a grip? Matt Coffy: I have a grip. Matt Kimberley: Have you still got it? Matt Coffy: Holding on to it right now as a matter of fact. Matt Kimberley: I don’t want to know. Matt Coffy: Exactly. That is interesting. We’ve got a coaching business obviously that you’re doing. Working with Michael Port. Now Michael Port is a rockstar in the world of… Like I said, getting released back in the stage presence and the ability to really come across as someone’s who’s got confidence. What is next for you right now? Because we wanted to get into this yesterday but we never got to it. I wanted to understand where you’re going with the business model because it seems like you’ve kind of upgraded your brand. You’ve become more of a presence I think. You were in Africa last week. What are the things that you’re doing that we should know about to get this discussion sort of in second gear? Matt Kimberley: Sure. So coming on the horizon is Professional Persuasion. Professional Persuasion is a program I’ve been developing for the last five years. Just putting the final finishing touches. By developing, I mean kind of bio osmosis. I’ve been studying pretty hard since you don’t really have to get people to say yes to you, and I’ve read everything that’s ever been written about it and I’ve taken a lot of courses and of course taught hundreds, if not thousands, I think thousands of people at this point over the last seven or eight years or so in how to be more effective.  Because I’m inherently a lazy person and unlike many business development buds, I’m not massively ambitious. That can be a little bit of a disadvantage I think. I think laziness is a disadvantage everywhere. It can be a disadvantage if you’re not ambitious as a business development person.  By ambitious, I mean I’ve never been solely motivated by money. If you said you can have a ton of money but you got to work 18 hours a day for it, or you can have a reasonable amount of money and only work six hours  day, I will always go for the latter option. But with that in mind and knowing very much my weaknesses, I have broken down the entire process of going from first meeting through to acquiescence or agreement and identify the different spots that go from first meeting through to getting somebody on board and saying, “How can we become a little bit more effective in every step? How can we be a little bit more likable? How can we exercise a little bit more control over what the prospect does? How can we be a little bit more credible so asking them to invest in us is not such a gamble? How can we be a little bit more persuasive in our closing? How can we be a little bit more effective in transferring the urgency of the situation to our prospects?” I have developed a series of tools really that I’m really excited to show to the world under the Professional Persuasion brand. Matt Coffy: I love it. I love it. I want to be a little greedy here and ask you a question of my own self-interest. Because you’ve worked with so many people, I want to ask you what do you see before we get into the persuasion story, what do you see as the biggest common denominator between people who are successful and go for it and those that are continually saying the same thing which is “I’m going to get to it. I’m almost there. I’m trying to.” It seems as if there is a separation between those who kind of cross the border and actually do the work that’s needed. I’m just curious. You’ve spent so much time with so many people. Matt Kimberley: I think it’s urgency in many cases. It’s not true that those with the greatest need are the greatest action takers. For example, if you knew that your house was going to be repossessed next week, you’d pull out all the stops to try and make it happen. I talked about this a little bit in the Kimberley Kids Kidney Concepts which says if our need is strong enough, then it can force us to take action. For example, if I said, “Matt, you’ve got to come up with 100k this week or 200k, 300k, whatever the figure is. Can you do it?” You’d say, “No, that’s going to be tough.” If I said, “Matt, unless you come up with 200k this week, the kidney that your kid needs will not be available to you,” you would do it. You would just do it. However, there are some people for whom that is still a challenge, and those that I see who have come to our training programs or my mentoring programs, my clients who have seen rapid growth and those who seem to be floundering or stuck at the first hurdle at times is just the urgency. They’re a little bit tough with themselves. They say, “My goals are less negotiable. I’m going to be slightly less soft on myself. I’m going to be slightly less forgiving of myself and perhaps the other people.” I think you need to beat yourself up a little bit in order to do well. I think you need to say, “Here’s what I’m going for. That’s the goal.” There’s a certain amount of non-negotiability. The others who say, “Well, it would be great if…” Well, you can tell a lot from somebody’s linguistics. “What I’m hoping to do next year… I’d love it if I…” Those who are less like that tend to say, “Is what I’m doing. Is what I’m going to do. This week I’m going to have five sales conversations” as opposed to “It would be great if I organize five sales conversations” for example. Matt Coffy: So it’s being specific and being hungry and urgent. Matt Kimberley: Yeah, I think that’s fair. I think that’s fair. Matt Coffy: It’s interesting because I’ve talked to a lot of people who are in the self-help coaching/self-improvement world, and I always get different answers from people. But the theme that keeps coming back is do you want it bad enough? Matt Kimberley: Yeah. I think that’s true. I think are you comfortable? Because if you’re comfortable, it’s very difficult to make change. If you are sitting on the couch eating Doritos, drinking Bud Light with a game on an 85 inch wafer-thin 3D TV in front of you, it’s very difficult to tell yourself to get up because you’re comfortable. Or if you’ve got a safety net, it’s quite easy to say, “I can afford to slip up a few times.” But if you’re not comfortable, if you don’t have the safety net, if there is an element of discomfort, you’re happy and that might be from external or internal motivators or sources, then it’s much easier to make change I believe. One of the ways I motivate myself is by spending money I don’t have. It doesn’t mean I’m fiscally irresponsible. I’ve got two kids and they’re in school. I’ve got an investment property. I’m not fiscally irresponsible. I kind of vow to myself that within reason I won’t say no to anything based on price. So somebody says, “Do you want to do this course? I say yes. “Do you want to make this trip?” I say yes. “Invest in this piece of software.” I say yes. And then I find that that gives me a sufficient level. It might not be the safest thing. But I budget carefully. I’m not talking about spending the kid’s school fees on the craps table. But I kind of vow to myself that money is a resource to be mined rather than something to be held on to at any cost. One way I make myself uncomfortable is spending money I don’t have. Matt Coffy: That doesn’t mean buying a super yacht. Matt Kimberley: No. That would be fiscally irresponsible. They say that entrepreneurs have a high risk tolerance or people who are prepared to break on their own have a high risk tolerance or greater risk management than others. There’s two sides to this coin. One is saying, “I’m happy to take risks. Therefore the upside is going to be greater.” Other arguments are that well actually entrepreneurs or self-employed people are much better at mitigating risks. So they’re better at managing risks. So yes, they’re going to prepare. They’ll be prepared to take a risk but they know that they have a back-up plan or they have some way of mitigating that risk. I think what I see amongst those who are making less rapid advancement in their business is that they’re not prepared to take the risk because they’re happy to rely upon the mitigation. Matt Coffy: Agreed. One of the things that was explained to me by one of the self-help or self-improvement or business improvement guys was that you don’t love your kids enough, and he hit me really hard like between the eyes for that one. He says if you’re not making advancements forward in your business, then you don’t love your kids enough to give them a life that they will not have unless you make the effort. I thought that was great. Matt Kimberley: That reminds me of the kind of sales tactics we’d use in the time share industry. We’d have a family sit in front of us and we’d look to the kids and we’d say, “If in eight years time when you want to go to the university and your daddy looks you in the eye and daddy is sitting right there and says, ‘I’m sorry, kids. We can’t afford it.’ it’s because you made the wrong decision today.” Matt Coffy: It’s a great closing strategy. Matt Kimberley: It’s awful. It’s hideous. But I understand. Who was it that said, “Timid marketers have skinny kids?” Somebody famous said that. It’s quite a controversial statement, but if you Google it, it will come up and make sure the right person gets credit. But I’ve heard that before and it’s yeah I don’t know, mate. I’m probably the wrong person from an ambition point of view. My dad who was the opposite of being an entrepreneur, he dedicated himself to a life of service and poverty to a certain degree as a clerk in the holy orders, right? I certainly wouldn’t have felt more loved had he had a million dollars in the bank. Matt Coffy: This is kind of going to this strategy. You’re all over the place. You’re in Africa. Matt Kimberley: I’m literally all over. Never has a truer thing being said. I’m all over the place. I don’t know what I’m doing. Matt Coffy: You’re doing a song and dance on Saturn next year. I call this the radar of opportunity. I think you’re tuned in a lot to the higher levels of opportunity because you’ve been around these people. Again you were at Superfast Business in Australia. Matt Kimberley: I was in February or March this year. Matt Coffy: And then you were over with Chris Tocker in the Philippines for his annual FRF, right? Matt Kimberley: Tropical Think Tank. Matt Coffy: TTT. Matt Kimberley: Exactly. Matt Coffy: I can’t remember. So many acronyms in this world. So you get around these people and I think the radars of opportunity just comes into your—it’s almost as if you’re in a higher rev cycle than most people are at. Can you expand upon that just a little bit? Matt Kimberley: Yeah. That’s really interesting. Firstly, on a purely practical level, don’t be expected to speak at a conference if the conference organizer doesn’t know who you are, if that’s your goal. Don’t be expected to be invited for an RFP if the purchasing manager doesn’t know who you are. Don’t be expected to win the business if the prospect doesn’t know who you are. So you have to be known, right? I network shamelessly. In fact, this is like the corn, I believe that everybody will have greater results if more people know what they do for a start and managing relationships using tools to help who’s on top of them is absolutely part. I’m not one for morning routines or daily routines. I’m sure I would be a better person, a businessman if I had some kind of strict morning regime. But one of the things that I do religiously is looking into my CRM system and say, “Who are the important people in my like that haven’t heard from me in a month?” Matt Coffy: Right. Matt Kimberley: I reach out to them. This is taken straight from the Book Yourself Solid practice. It’s called the networking and direct outreach strategy who continue to strengthen existing relationships and make new relationships, make friends with people you want to have relationships with. So I do that kind of religiously and I tend to say yes to all and any opportunity. Not everything. As the requests become more frequent, obviously I have to filter them more and more, but why wouldn’t you? Why wouldn’t you say, “I’d love to.” Why wouldn’t you work those relationships? Michael Port again. I just keep referring back to everything he’s taught me over the last seven years. He teaches me and everybody who goes to the republic speaking training. That friends get friends work. That’s not just a case of what you know is who you know. It’s who knows what you know and do they like you because if they do, they’ll recommend you and they’ll refer you. The reason I spoke at Chris Tocker’s event in the very first place last year 2015 is because one of the speakers, Amy Schmittauer, is a good friend of mine and she recommended me, and Chris said, “Yes, Matt would be great. I’ve heard good things about him from other people I know.” So I became great friends with Chris, and on the back of that I went to his event and I met James Schumacher who was in attendance. He watched me speak. He said, “You’re great. Would you like to come to Superfast Business?” I said, “I would love to come to Superfast Business.” It works like that. If you hide, then make sure your business model supports being invisible. Matt Coffy: Right. I think it does take a certain type of person to have an outward ability to do what you do really well which is to have a stage presence. We just had our event down in Mexico which was great. Matt Kimberley: Ariba, ariba! Matt Coffy: Yeah. I literally am still trying to recuperate. Matt Kimberley: Are you still burping tequila worms? Matt Coffy: Mezcal. A whole thing about having and doing these what I would call sort of life-changing events. I really do think if you jump on a plane, you go to the Philippines, you go to Cebu City and you would meet up with a bunch of really cool people from all over the place, it changes your perspective. Matt Kimberley: Yeah. It’s really interesting. One of the concepts that I’ve become obsessed with over the last 12 months is normality. If your normal is get up in the morning, have a cup of tea, get in a car, drive to a miserable job that you hate, come home, hang around with the wife that you hate, sit down and watch some crappy TV, go to the occasional party with people you hate, everybody around you is doing the same thing as you. Everybody is earning $35,000 a year. Everybody’s complaining that they don’t earn enough. Everybody’s making the same purchasing decisions about size of TV, types of car. Everybody’s going into debt. Everybody’s going to college. Then that is your normal. This is just a reworking of five people you hang around with. If you expose yourself to people who have a different normal, then your normal becomes different. If you expose yourself to people who no longer commute, you start to say, “Well, why am I commuting? That seems crazy.” If you expose yourself to people who invest money in themselves, then you’ll think, “Why am I not investing money in myself?” If you expose yourself to people for whom 50k or 60k or 100k is a good month or a good week’s worth of work, then you start to challenge your assumptions of normal. We’ve known this because they’re different. In the UK and in the States, everywhere, this idea of classes or strata of society where normal is the same for one group of people. Sometimes you have to change your geographic location in order to change your normal. If you live in a small regional town where everybody works in the only factory in town, then that is your normal. But if you travel outside of there and you expose yourself to a new normal, then you start to become accustomed to it. What do you need to do to get a job at Wall Street? Well, I would say the first thing will be start to hang out with people who work in Wall Street. That would be it. Go and spend time with them. Make friends with them. Go to the bars they drink at. Go to the clubs they go to. Even if you don’t have any money, you can still hang out with these people the right way. Go to community events. Go to the churches they go to. I’m thinking free opportunities. Go to the Alcoholics Anonymous meetings they go to. Whatever it is, in order to make these connections, then don’t be surprised if one day you find that it’s quite normal that you get a job in Wall Street. Matt Coffy: It is getting around the new normal. It’s a really interesting way to put it which is that if you’re accustomed to this higher cycle of what I call the radar of opportunity, maybe that’s where this kind of becomes more where you just have those interactions with people who have got such a different viewpoint than the average Joe on the street which I think you kind of nailed here. Being with Michael Port, I know we’ve mentioned it a couple of times, and being around that level, I just think that there is a confidence of lifestyle and people who are out there and doing it and making it happen, I find it just fascinating that they’re able to put the time into the business model that they’re making. In our case, we do services for small businesses  and medium-sized businesses here in the States. But just to put a brand around themselves, and of course we’re all trying to really do that at the end if you own a business. You’re trying to sort of brand yourself as the most important aspect of the element of your life because you can’t go back in time and say, “I wish I did this.” The only thing you have in front of you is to make sure that you have an exceptional life going forward. Most people I think just get drowned out by jumping in the car, just like you said, going to work. It’s all over with pretty soon. Matt Kimberley: I’m sorry to interrupt you there. Matt Coffy: Go ahead. Matt Kimberley: Otherwise, I’ll forget what I was about to say. The single thread that ties all of these people together, the same people that I see at conferences in the Philippines and in Australia and then a few weeks later in Vegas because they were the same people at all three in many cases is financial confidence. It’s not saying it’s financial security. They may not be secure today but they are confident. The reason that they’re confident is because they know how to sell. They know that no matter what goes down even if their financial rug is pulled out from underneath them tomorrow, because they know that they can ask other people for money and those people will be happy to give it to them for a fair trade, then what is there left to worry about? Sure, it doesn’t mean that they are free of financial worries. But they have a level of financial confidence. There are some crippling people who live in a different normal as many people in my hometown where I grew up. I think it’s not a coincidence that I choose not to live there anymore. Matt Coffy: I hear you. That’s the same with me. I think it’s not even selling though because yes, they have the ability to sell but I think your biggest side of the business is that you sell by not selling. Like literally it’s a different perspective. I’ve had this discussion before which is that people want to buy, not be sold.  You literally create that environment. Maybe this is dovetailing back into this persuasion strategy that you’re coming up with. Why don’t we dovetail it into this program and then we’ll kind of close it up for this session. Matt Kimberley: Sorry. So what are we dovetailing and what dovetailing mean? Matt Coffy: I think really our dialogue is hitting into this persuasion strategy. At the end of the day, we kind of went through how people are motivated to do what you are at the higher levels of echelon are explaining which is the persuasional tactics. Dovetailing is really melding this discussion back into your new outcoming program. Matt Kimberley: Is it a woodworking phrase? Matt Coffy: Yeah, of course. Dovetail is a sort of joint between two pieces of wood. So have you got wood? Matt Kimberley:  Have you got wood? Is that the question? Matt Coffy: Let’s go back to the power of persuasion and this new program. I’m really fascinated because of course I’ll be one of the first persons  who want to jump on. Matt Kimberley: Yeah. So again, confidence counts for a certain amount, right? If you say that I’m selling without selling and people like to buy rather than be sold, I agree to you. People like to make their own decisions about buying. If it looks effortless when… Have you seen Glengarry Glenros? Matt Coffy: Yeah, of course. Matt Kimberley: So you know there’s the bit where the Opportuno character sitting in a bar and he’s having a drink with the guy who is… I forget the guy who plays the prospect, the customer. He is talking about nothing. He is talking about his philosophy of life. He is hypnotizing this guy over whisky or several. He’s scribbling on the back of a napkin. At the end of it, he doesn’t know what hits him but the guy just purchased something. He comes back a couple of days later with buyer’s remorse. He says, “I’ve discussed it with my wife.” The Opportuno character who knows this legally mandated 72-hour cooling off period says, “Just come back on Monday.” The thing is it might look like it’s effortless or it might look like it’s happening without strategy or technique behind it. But it’s really not. I think it’s like if you watch Freddie Stare, not now but back when he was active, you watch him dance, you say it seems effortless. It’s because he just practiced and practiced and practiced and practiced. That doesn’t mean that we’re operating on a high plane. It means if you do something frequently enough, then it does start to become second nature. I’m not talking about these crappy NLP techniques that some people teach selling from the stage. If you use the words “Buy now,” then people will hear “Make a purchase now.” Easier to explain in writing, Matt. “By now” is the same as “Buy now.” We’re not talking about appearances but we are talking about just being conscious of what it’s going to take in order to get the customer onboard. One of the things that I teach and preach and continue to bang my drum about is that you, the sales person, and your product specifically should be the prize. That’s perhaps why it looks like there’s not much selling going on because I want people to come to me because they are excited about what it is and I also want people to believe that they can’t have it necessarily. Anything that’s freely available and abundant is no longer valuable, or at least we perceive that until we’re denied it. It’s like oxygen. We think it’s not particularly valuable. We don’t think about it until we’re denied it. But I think it’s the same with making an offer. Yes, I will actively encourage people to sign up, but I also make people know that it might not be for you, probably isn’t for you. In actual fact, there is a little bit of psychology at work in that. The principles of professional persuasion have 16 core points. If you’re the worst sales person in the world with the worst prospect database in the world and the worst product in the world, but you have 1000 conversations with people, you’ll probably get lucky sometimes. You get lucky sometimes. So my argument is if the worst salesman in the world can get lucky sometimes, that means that somebody who puts a little bit of effort and conscientiousness deliberateness into their efforts, then they’re going to increase their likelihood of making more sales. That’s my aim is to help my clients make more sales. We’ve got 16 stages that go from qualification, so identifying who you’re going to spend time with or on. That’s about getting people to qualify themselves all the way through to the close without leaving any stone untouched. We go through how to control your customer so that they’re doing what you want them to do and you’re not running around after them and serving them. Sorry, you should be serving your customer but your prospect should be on a level playing field with you rather than having a master-servant arrangement. So you have to exercise some control over them. Got to make sure you’re likeable. There are a couple of ways to make yourself more likeable. You got to make sure you’re credible. There are some specific strategies to make you more credible. If you can be endorsed by an expert or a sponsor or a very credible third party, that can help. You’ve got to be able to clearly delineate the problem that you’re going to be solving. It might not be a serious problem like it might be the problem is your vacation is going to be shit unless you take this hot air balloon ride because that’s what all the cool kids are doing, and that’s your solution. So you’ve got a problem. You’ve got a solution. You’ve got to know your product inside out and understand the ways that it will actively change their life. That’s what everybody teaches, right? Problem, solution, benefit. It’s then about letting people know that they’re not alone. It’s about letting them know that they are in excellent company because very few people like to be trailblazers although there are instances when you can use the trailblazer approach in order to get people onboard kind of first move advantage or the guinea pig close or something similar. You’ve got to make sure that you understand all of the reasons that they might not be buying from you and recognize when it’s appropriate to address those concerns. If we reverse engineer, we want somebody to become a customer, let’s list all of the steps that they need to take in order to become a customer and then let’s look at all the reasons they might not become a customer and make sure that they’re hitting each one of those points as we have this dance, this dance to the closing line with the customer. That’s really what the professional persuasion process is all about. We make the offer. We load the offer. We reverse the risk. We let it be known that there aren’t many of them that we have to have some element of scarcity and we have to have some element of an urgency, and we need to give them a concrete close. The close might lead to somebody becoming a customer or the close might lead to somebody agreeing to not become a customer so that you don’t waste your time on it anymore. This process can be applied to conversations with people. It can be applied to managing multiple conversations with people over a very long buying cycle. It can be applied to selling on a webinar. It can be applied to writing a sales letter or a sales page. That’s the professional persuasion process. Matt Coffy: I really dig it. It sounds like this is going to be very exciting. Is this going to be a membership program? Is it going to be a one-time thing? What’s the process? Have you spec-ed that out? I’m just curious. Matt Kimberley: The final decision is going to be made in the next three weeks. It’s definitely going to be something that I want to teach live. By live, I mean in real-time. So the first iteration of this is going to be a talk class because I want to make sure when it is improved and polished and made available as consumable offer, either as a book or a course or something similar, then I’m really hitting every box. So I’ll be running a beta program before the summer is out. Matt Coffy: Alright. For those who are listening, you better jump in the beta. Matt Kimberley: I think you’d be pretty smart to jump in the beta. Matt Coffy: You want to be in Matt’s team. He is just amazing. Let’s wrap it up here. Two last questions and let’s get you on your way. Appreciate you calling in. You’re in Malta today obviously. Matt Kimberley: I am. Sunny Malta in the Mediterranean. Matt Coffy: Exactly. Love that. So first question, probably the most important question so far, number one scotch? Matt Kimberley: For the moment, Lagavulin any year or Laphroaig. I’m not fussy about years. Something maybe 12 years or older. Matt Coffy: Not too fussy. Matt Kimberley: I like something really smoky, really peety, something that tastes like you’re just sucking on a charred piece of wood. Although I have enjoyed Valentines blended recently. Valentines making delicious blended whiskies. Matt Coffy: Oh my goodness. I can’t believe it. I thought for sure you’d at least have a Glen Levitt in there. Matt Kimberley: Yeah, I enjoy it. Listen, I’m not fussy. You know me, whatever it is. If it’s warm and wet, I’m happy. Matt Coffy: That’s a good way to put it. So why don’t we move on to the second question which is where can we find you next? Where is Matt going to be speaking? Where are you going next? You just came from Africa, right? You almost went on a safari. Good thing you didn’t because I think there was a little bit of a rainstorm out there. Where is the next place that we can catch you? Where is the best way to get in contact with you? Matt Kimberley: My agenda is fluid which means once things are in it, they stay. But things are added to it all the time. So I recommend you go to matthewkimberley.com just to give me your email address. We can become penpals. I’ll write to you from time to time. If you want to, you can write back. There I will always keep people updated about where I am going to be. I know I’ve got something lined up. Probably my first solo event will be taking place on the East Coast somewhere before the end of the year. I’m still putting the finishing touches to that. But I’ll keep you updated. Otherwise, I’ll be back in Tanzania very soon, possibly going to South Korea as well if any of your listeners would like to come and join me there. But the best way to find out is give me your email address and I’ll be writing to you. Matt Coffy: Perfect, perfect. Awesome talking to you, Matt. I can’t wait to catch up to you at some point. If you’re definitely going to be on the East Coast, I’m going to hunt you down. Matt Kimberley: Oh yeah. Matt Coffy: I know that every once in a whI know that every once in a while you do make it to New York city which would be really cool to catch up there and  maybe we can go out and find some of this crazy, let’s just say, alternative double wood burnt charred scotch strategy. Matt Kimberley: There we go. That’s what we do. Put the world to write over a wee dram or two. Matt Coffy: Exactly. Talk to you soon. Again if anybody who wants to keep with Matt, he is a really cool guy to hang out with and also really smart and I’m glad that we had you on. Matt Kimberley: Rock and roll. Thanks, buddy. Matt Coffy: See you soon.

Shomer Mitzvot - Exegeting Galatians - The Harvest

Summary Let us summarize what we have learned concerning the book of Galatians and the situation facing the Apostle there: Dovetailing what he composed in Galatians, in his letter to Rome, Sha'ul wrote in 3:28 that God considers a person righteous on the grounds of trusting, which has nothing to do with the Torah (or as in KJV “works of Law”). On the surface this seems problematic for my own teachings that consider Torah observance to be of great significance. Yet, the problem here is really more a matter of translation than of theology. What Sha’ul is really talking about when he employs the Greek phrase “ergon nomos”, translated here as “works of Law” is in actuality a technical phrase that the Judaisms of Sha’ul’s day employed to speak of the halakhah, that is, the proper way in which a Jew is to walk out Torah. Indeed, the prevailing view of the sages of the 1st Century held to the common belief that Isra'el and Isra'el alone shared a place in the world to come. Thus, if a non-Jew wished to enter into HaShem’s blessings and promises, such a person had to convert to Judaism first. To be sure, this is one of the primary arguments delineated in the letter to the Galatians. But for Sha’ul no such ‘man-made” conversion policy existed in Scripture! By contrast, Sha'ul taught most assuredly that Gentiles were grafted into Isra'el the same way that Avraham was counted as righteous by God in B’resheet (Genesis) chapter 15: faith in the promised Word of the LORD. Thus, the phrase “works of Law” has a Hebrew counterpart: ma’asei haTorah. What meaneth ma’asei haTorah? The Dead Sea Scrolls used this phrase as well, and since the discovery of those manuscripts we have now come to know that it refers to “some of the precepts of the Torah”, as adjudicated by the halakhah and by the particular community wielding the most influence. To be sure, the halakhah that teaches Gentile inclusion only by way of conversion (read most often as “circumcision” in Galatians) was naturally at odds with the True Gospel of Gentile inclusion by faith in Yeshua plus nothing! If we understand that quite often Sha'ul’s use of the term circumcision in Galatians is actually shorthand for “the man-made ritual that seeks to turn Gentiles into Jews” then the letter begins to make more sense Hebraically and contextually. In essence, “works of the law” refer to those “group requirements” as outlined and delegated by each individual group functioning under the prevailing Judaisms of Paul’s day. Rav Sha’ul (Apostle Paul), missionary to the Gentiles, had to defend the correct Torah viewpoint in his letters addressed to the Churches at Galatia (specifically chapter 5), as well as to the one in Ephesus. Circumcision, a shorthand way for Paul to say "conversion to Judaism/becoming a Jew", was historically misused, but there is no reason for us to continue in such a misunderstanding. Nor is there any reason for the emerging Torah communities to shrink back from that which God has clearly given, provided we maintain our primary identity as that of one firmly grounded in Mashiach. To be “under the law” is a pejorative position originally hinted at all the way back in Deuteronomy 29:19-21. The verse clearly teaches us that to have “every curse written in this book upon you” is to be in a state of “not forgiven by ADONAI,” viz, “under condemnation,” viz, “under the law.” Only the Spirit of the Holy One, writing the Torah on the heart and mind, can bring the participant to the intended goal of surrendering to the Mashiach and out from under the curse pronounced in the law. With our natural mind, we read, "do this…" and "don’t do that…” and we have a tendency to misunderstand the grace behind the words. Yeshua came to explain the gracious intent of every command, by explaining the primary thrust of the Torah in the first place: leading its reader to a genuine trusting faith in the Messiah found therein—namely himself!

Is there an area of your life that you're not allowing God to work in? Perhaps you need to make a flip before you make a leap. Dovetailing the recent Leap Year series, this message from Larry Dauer encourages us to take a look at making the flip by allowing Christ to work in areas of our lives that we may not have allowed Him to work in before.
