If you missed part 1 of this series, that's where we explore the supply side of these essential forest conservation carbon credits. Now, let's focus on the demand side. Why do organizations purchase ‘Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation' (REDD+) credits, and how do these transactions support global sustainability goals? As of November 2024, this subject is timely as some REDD+ programs just received the Core Carbon Principles (CCP) label, recognising high-quality carbon credits that create verifiable climate impact. Erika Schiller is joined by Bryan McCann, Senior Director of Corporate Solutions at Climate Impact X & early leader at LEAF Coalition, and Anna Stablum, ClimeCo's Director of Business Development in Asia. Learn how companies use REDD+ credits in voluntary and compliance markets, the claims associated with these purchases, and the challenges to ensure credit quality and transparency. They also discuss the role of international frameworks like Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) and the Paris Agreement's Article 6 in driving demand, highlighting how these programs encourage corporate sustainability strategies while fostering global cooperation on emissions reduction. Discover how REDD+ demand drives corporate climate action and why this market is essential for mitigating climate change. This episode references recent ICVCM approvals of new REDD+ methodologies, including ART TREES v2.0, Verra VCS VM0048, and the Jurisdictional and Nested REDD+ Framework, which aim to improve the credibility of carbon credits. ‘REDD' stands for ‘Reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries', with the "+" adding activities like sustainable forest management and conservation. These projects aim to protect tropical forests, generate carbon credits, and support the fight against climate change. In the first part of this series, host Erika Schiller is joined by Bryan McCann, Senior Director of Corporate Solutions at Climate Impact X and early leader at LEAF Coalition, and Anna Stablum, ClimeCo's Director of Business Development in Asia, to explore the history of jurisdictional REDD+, the difference between private and sovereign projects, and how many forest-rich countries are turning to carbon markets to preserve their green resources. They also discuss the supply side of REDD+ projects, how the credits are created, and the challenges of scaling these forest conservation efforts.Additionally, you will hear about the latest updates in methodologies that improve the accuracy and trustworthiness of REDD+ projects, ensuring long-term forest protection through more reliable carbon credit systems. Are you curious about who buys these REDD+ credits and why they are essential? Tune in to part two, where we explore the demand side of the REDD+ market and its role in sustainability and compliance strategies. Today's guest has had one of the broadest and most diverse careers of anyone I have interviewed. Today Kera McDonald is the Chief Underwriting Officer of Swiss Re Corporate Solutions but over more than 25 years she has been an actuary and a pensions consultant, a risk manager, an aviation underwriter and a senior executive in an internal audit team. I'd say that unique blend of experience is an excellent preparation for her current role, particularly as Swiss Re Corporate Solutions moves out of its remediation phase into a period of sustainable growth. Kera is direct and easy to talk to and in this podcast we discuss the state of the global insurance market and Corporate Solutions' strategy within it as well as this unique business's position within its wider group and the applications of technology and artificial intelligence as the market digitises. She doesn't duck any difficult questions and is excellent and incredibly well-informed company. I really benefitted from my time with Kera and I think you will too. NOTES: A couple of abbreviations slipped through: PYD stands for Prior Year claims Development. And of course, CorSo is an abbreviation of Swiss Re Corporate Solutions itself.. Artemis Live - Insurance-linked securities (ILS), catastrophe bonds (cat bonds), reinsurance
Parametric insurance solutions continue to be more broadly adopted, but the technology behind their triggers is also critical and solutions are developing fast. Artemis recently spoke with Callum Higgins from Moody's RMS, a Product Manager for Moody's RMS event response services, and Martin Hotz, Head Parametric Nat Cat at Swiss Re Corporate Solutions, to learn more about how parametric triggers are used in hurricane insurance and risk transfer today. The pair discussed advanced catastrophe risk modelling tools and their application in delivering parametric risk transfer solutions, with a particular focus on hurricane risk and the Moody's RMS HWind product. Higgins explained some of the use-cases for the HWind product in risk transfer and said that, "Specifically, in the insurance-linked securities space, around live cat trading for instance, making decisions around that, but also on the investor relations side. So being able to communicate to your investors while the storms approaching lands, what that could mean for the funds, for instance. "The ILS space is one area we've seen HWind forecasting in particular being used quite a lot." Hotz highlighted how Swiss Re uses the HWind product, saying, "We offer parametric hurricane insurance to our commercial insureds based on the wind-speed data from Moody's RMS and their HWind real-time data and we have issued our first policy that settles based on HWind back in 2016. "So we're now in our eighth hurricane season of providing such cover and did pay also in some of the industry-shaping events over the past couple of years. "For us, HWind meets the criteria of being a fast, independent and reliable data service, which as with any parametric policy is always at the core." Listen to this full podcast episode for insights into parametric insurance and risk transfer, as well as the role of models and real-time data in parametric triggers.

Welcome back to the She's Wild Podcast hosted by Nancy Surak! Today's guest is Ra'eesa Motala, Vice President at Rokos Advisors. As an Industrial and Corporate Solutions broker, Ra'eesa is responsible for providing her clients with transparent and measurable results for their commercial real estate solutions. Her ability to work in multi-markets has provided her with vast knowledge and experience within the industrial sector and given her clients insight into how their businesses could benefit by being positioned in developing cities that offer the best incentive packages, access to robust supply chain routes, cost savings, and growth opportunities. Ra'eesa's tenacious nature and creative ability allow her to find effective and creative ways to solve problems that keep clients up at night. In today's episode, Ra'eesa and I talk about what's happening in the industrial space right now in Minneapolis. Ra'eesa is a shining example of someone who followed her heart and ended up exactly where she was meant to be. After attending medical school with the hopes of becoming a doctor, Ra'eesa found her true passion in multifamily real estate. And now, she's thriving in the industrial space. My favorite part of today's episode was Ra'eesa's advice on creating your own personal board of advisors to connect with in hard situations. I think we all need a few people like that in our lives - people who we can turn to for honest feedback and sage wisdom. Thank you, Ra'eesa, for sharing your story and your insights with us today. Memorable Moments:9:32- Every person that I pitch to is going to remember me after they hear a pitch from all of these guys. And a lot of them are fantastic but I just had this kind of mentality and attitude that if they could do it, I could find a way to do it better and be more memorable doing it. So that's why I jumped into industrial real estate.15:02- A big part of my job outside of identifying organizations' real estate as a whole is really kind of helping them build their people and their culture. You know, if you don't believe in the people and the culture, then the real estate is not going to work, no matter what you do.19:02- I would say that on the industrial side, it's still full steam ahead. And from what we can tell, we don't have, knock on wood, a lot of our clients saying hit pause or slow down anything they're doing. They are saying let's start planning and making sure we get ahead of this because we don't want to be in a situation like they were two, three years ago, where we thought we were, you know, pacing ourselves and we fell behind and we fell behind pretty quickly and hard.32:20- Of the mentees that I have right now, I think some of the advice that I have given them is that, you know, I went through this, and I dealt with a lot, as a woman and as a woman of color. And just because I went through, it doesn't mean that they need to go through it, it's my job to make it easier for them. And it's their job to then make it easier for the women that come after them.33:37- Your perspective is not always the best perspective. And you really have to find those who have gone through different opportunities, whether they failed or succeeded to be able to understand what your next move is.Connect with Nancy:Instagram: https://instagram.com/nancysurakLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nancysurak/Website: www.nancysurak.comConnect with Ra'eesaWebsite: https://raeesamotala.com/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/raeesamotala/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/raeesam/Ra'eesa's Podcast Recommendation:Atomic Habitshttps://www.amazon.com/Atomic-Habits-Proven-Build-Break/dp/0735211299Fanatical Prospectinghttps://www.amazon.com/Fanatical-Prospecting-Conversations-Leveraging-Telephone/dp/1119144752/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3JBCTN1DUFT5Z&keywords=fanatical+prospecting&qid=1663619989&s=books&sprefix=finatical+prospecting%2Cstripbooks%2C65&sr=1-1The Future is Faster Than You Thinkhttps://www.amazon.com/Future-Faster-Than-You-Think/dp/B07TSQF4RX/ref=sr_1_1?crid=293JD8SVNMCIF&keywords=The+Future+is+Faster+Than+You+Think&qid=1663620019&s=books&sprefix=the+future+is+faster+than+you+think%2Cstripbooks%2C72&sr=1-1

Episode Summary Hosts Nicholas Gandolfo, Director, Corporate Solutions Aditi Bhatia, Regional Sales Manager, Corporate Solutions In this episode, Nick and Aditi share recent developments in the global sustainable finance market. They touch on the cooling bond market and the shifting geographic split in green bond issuance, noting that EU dominance is waning as other jurisdictions close the gap. Nick gives his thoughts on the impact of the forthcoming EU green bond standard on what future bond frameworks will include, what will be reported, and the level of external review required. In her update on sustainability-linked loans and bonds, Aditi highlights a couple of transactions, notable for their use of gender-based KPIs aiming to increase the number of women in management positions. Finally, Nick applauds Sustainalytics' Corporate Solutions business for providing the most second-party opinions in the first half of the year, as cited by Environmental Finance. Study of Greenhouse Gas Targets Used in Linked Finance Environmental Finance recently published a report analyzing the types of key performance indicators being used in sustainability-linked bonds and loans. Across sustainability-linked instruments, carbon and greenhouse gas emission reduction KPIs accounted for about 75% of KPIs used, with other environmental issues, such as water, making up 10%, social issues another 10% and less than 5% related to governance issues. This makes sense, given the quantitative nature of GHG and carbon emission metrics. The report also noted the emergence of KPIs tied to scope 3 emissions, which is a promising trend given the high impact of scope 3 emissions for some industries. Focus on Supply Chain Sustainability Improvements For organizations looking to support ESG and sustainability improvements in their supply chain, it's important to understand suppliers' needs and motivations. Some large players in food and agriculture are offering financial incentives to farmers to implement sustainable practices. Others are supporting programs to pilot and scale innovative sustainability solutions. Still others are working to advance social goals, such as furthering opportunities for minority and female entrepreneurs. Sustainalytics' Corporate Solutions is working more and more with clients to support their evaluation of suppliers – from KPIs connected to suppliers to ESG assessments of their suppliers. Episode Summary Hosts Nicholas Gandolfo, Director, Corporate Solutions Sabrina Tang, Sales Associate, Sustainable Finance Solutions In this episode, Nick and Sabrina recap recent developments in the global green, social, sustainability, and sustainability-linked market. They highlight a major milestone for Morningstar Sustainalytics' sustainable finance team, which delivered its 1,000th second-party opinion in the spring. They also discuss the ever-evolving regulatory environment around ESG disclosures and reporting, the prevalence of measuring impact in the green, social, sustainability and sustainability-linked (GSSS) bond market, and share some of the updated GSSS guidance coming from International Capital Markets Association (ICMA). ESG and Sustainable Finance Regulations Continue to Roll Out Globally As noted in previous episodes, the regulatory train continues to roll along for issuers, investors, and service providers in the sustainable finance space. In the U.S., the Securities and Exchange Commission is proposing greater corporate disclosures related to climate and scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions. Also, in Europe, negotiations for the EU Green Bond Standard continue. Finally, there are continued calls for regulation of ESG data and ratings providers as this information is increasingly integrated into global investment decisions. Companies and investors should continue to monitor the shifting regulatory landscape and be prepared to disclose more when it comes to climate and other ESG-related issues. Reporting on Impact: The Next Big Thing in the GSSS Market It's a promising sign that a growing number of issuers are funding green and social projects with labeled bonds, but investors also want to know that proceeds from their GSSS bonds are having a positive impact. So, more and more issuers are crunching the numbers on the impact of their sustainable bonds and loans. During its annual conference, the ICMA released new and updated guidance for GSSS bonds, which includes new metrics for impact reporting for green and social projects. Sustainalytics' Corporate Solutions offers Impact Reporting for Bonds and Loans providing issuers with analysis of the expected and achieved impacts of their financed projects. Growing Focus on Biodiversity The Taskforce for Nature-based Financial Disclosures has published the next iteration of its reporting framework, which is looking at issues related to biodiversity and metrics. The International Finance Corporation and World Benchmark Alliance are also working to help advance the biodiversity finance market. Nick anticipates that we'll start to see and hear more about companies being “nature positive,” how that can be measured, which KPIs should be targeted and tracked, and which use of proceeds are eligible. With over half of the world's GDP at risk due to biodiversity loss, it's great to see a growing spotlight on biodiversity. Japan's Top Business Interviews Podcast By Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan
Paul Atkinson shares his journey as a leader of a multinational global insurance company and his insight in working in diverse cultural environments. Originally growing up in the UK, Mr. Atkinson joined RSA Insurance after graduating from university. Mr. Atkinson was attracted to the people aspect of insurance built on trust and integrity. Having worked in London for five years, Mr. Atkinson was posted in the Bahamas for two years before moving to Japan. After five years in Japan working for Royal Insurance, Mr. Atkinson move to Hong Kong and then to Taiwan where he continued to build his career within the insurance industry. In 2003 Mr. Atkinson returned to Japan and has been living in the country since then. After working as an executive search consultant, Mr. Atkinson went back to insurance and ran a direct marketing consultancy. Mr. Atkinson has been Head of Corporate Sales at AIG and is currently the Representative Director, Country Manager of Swiss Re Corporate Solutions. Through his experience of working in multiple countries, Mr. Atkinson has learned the power of diversity and inclusion in management. Having managed both male and female dominated teams and faced its challenges, Mr. Atkinson has worked to bring more balance to his organizations by forming diversity and inclusion employee resource groups. Mr. Atkinson explains this has been a wonderful way for him to connect with people outside of his immediate leadership. Although Mr. Atkinson points out the prevailing gender gap in management positions in Japan, he sees a potential of talented people with diverse backgrounds and different ways of thinking to bring change. In order to increase team engagement, Mr. Atkinson treats people with respect without being judgmental. Mr. Atkinson spends a third of his time speaking to people including those outside of his direct report. As his leadership style is delegation based, Mr. Atkinson understands the need to develop a culture of trust that enables people to step up and make key decisions. To encourage this, Mr. Atkinson sets up a clear vision and goal, and consistently communicates his expectations to his team. He also holds multiple discussions at various levels of the organization. Although Mr. Atkinson realizes this process is much more time-consuming than just giving out directions, he believes the final product is of much higher quality. He additionally encourages multiple departments to work together cross-functionally to create a culture of open communication and innovation. Mr. Atkinson also points out that following up and having regular check-ins with people is essential for ensuring that the delegation is happening. To newcomers coming to lead in Japan, Mr. Atkinson recommends talking to all team members in order get a sense of where to focus on in terms of improvement, be it in staffing, communication or strategy. He also advises to buy some time from head office – at least three months – before doing a 90-100 day report as this initial communication aspect is essential. Mr. Atkinson recommends people to learn some Japanese to understand the culture and show genuine interest. Lastly, Mr. Atkinson encourages newcomers to find a hobby and enjoy the beautiful culture and sites in Japan.
I have met Andreas Berger at various times in the last 15 years and he has been consistently impressive every time I have met him. It was therefore no surprise when in 2019 Swiss Re came calling with a major task to fix its consistently misfiring and loss-making Corporate Solutions, or CorSo, business unit. Two years later and the turnaround at CorSo has been remarkable. I think if you listen here you can see how Andreas has been able to do it. He does what good managers are supposed to do – he brings technical excellence but doesn't get bogged down in it; he understands the importance of correct management structures but doesn't come across like a consultant and he gets tech and data but isn't a technocrat. Most importantly he is also really transparent and honest about where things have gone wrong and knows how important it is to make remedial decisions quickly and get on with executing them. But the key factor overarching all of this is that he is a charismatic communicator who does all of the above with a smile on his face and the ability to bring staff, brokers and clients along with him for the journey. As you can imagine these ingredients make for a really good podcast, where we get stuck into everything CorSo and all the big challenges facing the industry today. In this episode, Kaitlyn Allen talks with Emmanuelle Palikuca, Senior Sustainability Advisor, Special Projects Team with ISS Corporate Solutions (ICS), a wholly owned subsidiary of Institutional Shareholder Services (ISS). ICS provides industry standard solutions in corporate governance, executive compensation, and sustainability. Emmanuelle works with corporate issuers across industries to develop their ESG strategies and improve sustainability-related disclosures and programs. She provides insight and guidance on alignment with ESG ratings, global frameworks and standards and is the lead Materiality Assessments advisor on the ICS team. Emmanuelle holds an M.S. in Sustainability Management from American University's Kogod School of Business. Kaitlyn and Emmanuelle discuss the challenges that many companies face in determining which ratings and rankings best support their ESG goals, and matter to their investors. From a practical perspective, ratings for any industry should provide a consistent measure as to how a company is performing against certain standards. In the ESG space, this is not always that that clear cut. As such, there is a call for increasing transparency surrounding the various rating structures, with greater clarity on what they are designed to measure. This allows for companies to make more informed decisions around which constructs work best for them. Emmanuelle's expertise brings clarity to the utility of some of the different ratings related to sustainability performance, and we are reminded that ESG ratings serve as signals to investors…they are not the end all, be all for their decision making. Conversely, to a company, an ESG rating is not just a score, it should serve to guide implementation of solutions that support sustainability goals. Conscious Capitalism - Dr. Kyshun Webster, Founder & Chairman of the Compassion Society Benefits Corporation discusses how companies can inexpensively provide family caregiver benefits, helping employees avoid the Hobson’s choice between work and family caregiving at a time when 73% of employees have caregiving responsibilities.
The COVID-19 pandemic has been forcing corporate leadership to re-examine their real estate strategies, with many reconsidering the amount of space dedicated to the traditional office. Corporate giants such as Twitter, Morgan Stanley, and Barclays have all publicly questioned their future real estate requirements and the amount of space they dedicate to traditional office space. There's a debate on whether offices will be relevant post-COVID. Some corporates have declared permanent work from home arrangements for employees and plans to downsize their real estate footprint in the next few years. In this podcast, our host, Art Patnaude, has a dialogue with Roddy Allan, JLL's Chief Research Officer, Asia Pacific, who's back in the Hong Kong office, and Marina Krishnan, Division President, Corporate Solutions speaking to us from her home office in Singapore. The topic at hand – the future of the office. Change, to some extent, is inevitable, and indeed welcomed, says Roddy Allan, Chief Research Officer, Asia Pacific, JLL. “But is this Asia Pacific real estate's Uber moment? No. We believe that this impact and change is overestimated in the medium-to-long term,” he says. While the office, as we know, will evolve, we have seen clients increasingly focused on sustainability, wellness, and technology. Some have begun making environmental tweaks and upgrades to align with commitments of building trust and ensuring fit-for-purpose spaces. Owners and investors who can take advantage of this opportunity to think about long-term redevelopment plans and designing or re-fitting their facilities will benefit greatly. In the long run, this could mean office space and location requirements may change. However, a factor that is also being considering by corporations when making decisions is the professional environment that offices provide, which are leading to more conversations on re-purposing or redesigning work areas to provide infrastructure for collaboration among remote and on-site staff. Essentially, while remote working will remain an option and provides employees with a choice depending on the type of work performed, we think here remains a strong case for the office's long-term future.

Tidewater Community College is participating in a statewide grant program known as Fast Forward. Fast Forward grants offset tuition costs on select workforce training program and eligible students can earn an industry credential at 1/3 the cost of tuition for short-term training programs. The in demand skilled trades include many of the jobs that local industry leaders have been having difficulty recruiting qualified candidates for. However, according to Dr. Emily Richardson, Interim Associate VP for Business and Corporate Solutions at Tidewater Community College, there appears to be a new awareness for these in demand skilled workers.
