Heart aging begins with weakened communication between your brain and heart, not just clogged arteries or genetics, and preserving that signaling slows structural decline inside heart tissue Research shows that losing vagus nerve input accelerates cellular aging in the heart, while restoring even a small amount of that signaling preserves coordination, energy production, and pumping efficiency The vagus nerve actively controls alertness, motivation, recovery, and heart rhythm, meaning daily behaviors directly shape how resilient your heart and nervous system remain over time Brief, challenging movement that engages large muscle groups sends a powerful wake-up signal from your body to your brain, rapidly increasing focus, drive, and nervous system coordination Pairing short bouts of hard movement with focused mental work and high-quality sleep strengthens brain-heart signaling, improves recovery, and supports long-term cardiovascular resilience

7 Food Supervillains Sabotaging Your Health: Inflammation and Foods to Avoid with Gerianne Cygan

What if some of the foods you eat every day are quietly working against your health? Amy Hudson sits down with Gerianne Cygan to break down food supervillains that may be doing more harm than good when we ingest them. They unpack insights from the Exercise Coach Nutrition Playbook, a practical resource used with clients at Exercise Coach Studios to simplify nutrition and target three major health troublemakers: high blood sugar, systemic inflammation, and poor digestive health. Tune in to hear how identifying and removing these food supervillains can create meaningful changes in how your body functions, and why a simpler nutrition framework might be the reset your health needs. Gerianne starts by explaining what "food supervillains" are. These are foods that consistently drive three major health problems: inflammation, high blood sugar, and poor digestive health. Gerianne covers why sugar earns the #1 supervillain spot. Sugar drives blood sugar spikes, crashes, cravings, and long-term insulin resistance. Over time, this pattern contributes to diabetes, metabolic syndrome, inflammation, and digestive issues. Learn how sugar hides in plain sight. Sugar shows up under dozens of names, including cane sugar, honey, maple syrup, maltodextrin, coconut sugar, and more. Many people don't realize how much sugar they're eating because the labels look "natural." Gerianne explains why fruit is still sugar, but not all sugar is equal. Whole fruits provide fiber and nutrients that slow absorption when eaten in moderation. Portion size and food pairing matter far more than cutting fruit out entirely. Why sugar is so hard to quit. Research shows sugar can trigger addictive patterns similar to drugs like cocaine.  Gerianne explains why grains and starchy foods are supervillains for many people. Grains like wheat, rice, oats, and corn often irritate digestion and raise blood sugar. Components like gluten, lectins, and phytates can damage the gut lining and block mineral absorption. Amy explains why grains are problematic. Poor digestion can trigger immune responses and systemic inflammation throughout the body. Many modern grains are highly refined and offer little nutritional value in return. Gerianne shares a practical tip for sugars, grains, and starches. Pairing them with protein and healthy fats slows blood sugar absorption. While this helps blood sugar control, it doesn't fully fix digestive issues. Why dairy makes the supervillain list. Dairy can raise blood sugar, promote inflammation, and worsen gut permeability. Lactose intolerance and immune reactions are more common than most people realize. Amy and Gerianne cover how to choose better dairy if you tolerate it. Grass-fed, organic, and fermented options like natural yogurt, kefir, aged cheese, butter, or ghee are better choices. Avoid sweetened, processed dairy with additives and emulsifiers. Gerianne explains why legumes and soy can be problematic. Legumes contain anti-nutrients that affect digestion and mineral absorption. They're especially challenging for people with existing gut or inflammatory issues. The protein problem with legumes. Legumes are low in essential amino acids and are less digestible than animal proteins. While they provide fiber, they're not complete proteins. Gerianne explains how personal training supports metabolic health beyond workouts. An experienced exercise coach can help you understand how food affects your blood sugar, inflammation, and performance. Why soy deserves extra caution. According to Gerianne, soy is heavily genetically modified and often sprayed with glyphosate. If consumed, organic and fermented forms like tempeh, miso, or natto are better options. Gerianne explains why artificial sweeteners, additives, and seed oils are supervillains. These ingredients disrupt gut bacteria, worsen insulin response, and trigger inflammation. They're linked to hormonal, neurological, and immune issues. Gerianne explains why alcohol makes the supervillain list. Current research shows no amount of alcohol is beneficial. Even moderate drinking increases cancer risk and worsens existing health conditions. Understand how alcohol behaves like sugar in the body. It spikes blood sugar and insulin just like other supervillains. Over time, it contributes to inflammation, poor sleep, and cardiovascular risk. Amy shares her personal "aha" moment about food. Sugar, grains, and alcohol all process like sugar in the body. Understanding this changed how she viewed everyday food choices. Amy highlights how to take action with a 30-day metabolic reset. Eliminating food supervillains for a short period helps reveal how your body truly responds. This approach focuses on learning, not perfection. Amy shares why working with a personal trainer helps connect nutrition decisions to real-world energy, strength, and recovery. That context makes unhealthy food choices harder to ignore and better habits easier to keep.     Mentioned in This Episode: The Exercise Coach - Get 2 Free Sessions! Get Busy Living PodcastFIVE PRIMARY POINTS of the PODCASTChronic Inflammation is a Powerful Predictor of Disease and DeathDr. Mishra explains that mounting evidence—including a major American College of Cardiology scientific statement—shows inflammation, measured by high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP), predicts long-term cardiovascular risk and mortality more strongly than LDL cholesterol alone. Inflammation is no longer a theoretical concern; it is clinically actionable and central to aging, heart disease, cancer, and dementia risk.Excess Inflammation Accelerates Aging and DiseaseWhile inflammation is essential for healing and fighting infection, chronic or excessive inflammation damages tissues and increases mortality risk. Dr. Mishra emphasizes that inflammation may be one of the best biological markers of aging, making immune balance—not suppression—a critical goal for long-term vitality.30-Day Anti-Inflammatory Challenge Targets the Essentials that Matter MostThe episode introduces a simple, actionable “execute on the essentials” framework:cut 200 calories per day, move 20 more minutes daily, sleep 20 more minutes nightly, and strengthen one in-person social connection each week. These small, disciplined changes can meaningfully lower inflammation and reduce disease and death risk without medications.Four Lifestyle Levers—Diet, Exercise, Sleep, and Connection Work SynergisticallyEating less and less often reduces inflammatory burden; regular aerobic and resistance exercise lowers CRP, IL-6, and TNF-α; adequate sleep both reduces inflammation and improves metabolic control; and social connection directly alters immune-related gene activity. Together, these four levers form a powerful, low-cost “anti-inflammatory quartet”Peak Vitality Requires Identifying Your Personal “Free Solo”Inspired by Alex Honnold's rope-free climb of Taipei 101, Dr. Mishra challenges listeners to define their own “Free Solo”—a deeply personal pursuit that demands long-term discipline, courage, and preparation. Why Cravings Hijack Your Body: The Storage Hormone Secret

This episode is for you if you've ever wondered why your body seems to hold onto fat, why cravings hit even when you just ate, or why dieting alone never seems to work.In this episode, I break down the storage hormone, insulin, and why understanding it is not just about biology—it's about how your mind, habits, and environment shape your hormonal responses. I share practical ways to reduce cravings, balance hormones, and eat in a way that actually supports your body.1. Insulin Isn't Just About FoodMost people think insulin is purely biological: “Eat sugar → insulin rises → fat storage happens.” But here's what I want you to know: your mind controls it too.Thoughts, anticipation, and habits can trigger insulin release.Insulin signals: “We have excess energy—store it, don't release it.”Paired with cortisol (the stress hormone), insulin drives cravings and fat storage more than you realize.Your biology is responding to your thoughts and environment as much as your plate.2. Everyone Responds DifferentlyI've seen it hundreds of times in the Make Peace With Food program: no two people respond the same way to food.Certain foods trigger more insulin in some people than others.Your sleep, stress, activity, and lean muscle mass all influence insulin's effect. That's why a personalized metabolic blueprint is so powerful—it shows you exactly which foods are truly nourishing for your body.Forget generic diets. Your hormones hold the real answers.3. Food Pairing & TimingIt's not just what you eat—it's how you pair it and when.Pairing carbs with protein, fat, or fiber reduces insulin spikes.Eating according to your circadian rhythm helps your body use energy efficiently.Anticipation of food triggers insulin before the first bite, creating cravings and prepping digestion.Understanding this alone can change how you respond to cravings.4. Cravings, Scarcity, and StressStress drives cravings at the hormone level:Cortisol increases blood sugar needs for immediate energy.Insulin follows, storing sugar and locking away energy. The drop in blood sugar afterward is what we feel as cravings.I share a personal story from hosting my retreat in Greece—stress and scarcity triggered intense cravings even though food was abundant. This shows how mindset directly interacts with hormones.5. Actionable StepsMonitor your hormones: notice stress, sleep, and food triggers.Mindful pairing: combine foods to balance glucose response.Strength training: lean muscle mass improves insulin efficiency.Anticipation awareness: notice how thoughts about food trigger cravings.Shift scarcity mindset: create safety around eating by experimenting with what nourishes you.The Reframe I Want You to Take With YouInstead of asking:“What should I eat?”I want you to start asking:How does this affect my hormones?Am I eating from safety or scarcity? What patterns am I reinforcing? What does my nervous system need right now?Transformation doesn't come from control. It comes from understanding.Key TakeawaysThe storage hormone is influenced by both biology and mindsetThere is no universal “healthy” foodStress and cravings are hormonally linkedAnticipation alone can trigger storageFood fear creates overeating — safety creates balanceHormone awareness beats calorie countingBook your FREE 30-minute Food Freedom Call now and start your journey to lasting change! In this episode of Dealer Talk with Jen Suzuki, I sit down with Jessica Colan, who leads one of the biggest BDC departments in the country and works in the #2 Kia store in the nation. I've known Jessica for more than a decade and trained her team for years and what makes her different is simple: she doesn't chase shiny toolsshe tests them against real processes until they perform. We talk about what's actually working with AI inside a high-performing dealership BDC—specifically how Jessica has used Matador AI hands-on for the last two years to revive stagnant leads, re-engage "ghosted" customers and target low-hanging fruit without wasting human time on dead ends. Jessica breaks down her "sacred" strategies: Building custom workflows and sequences by lead source (Trader, Sam's Club, etc.) Training the AI to sound like your store—not generic dealership spam Setting up human alerts so the team tags in fast when AI hits a boundary Running CSV-based campaigns (loyalty, lease maturity, unsold visits) with the right staffing so replies don't overwhelm the team Using AI-driven engagement to turn "closed" opportunities into open, actionable leads—and pushing hot conversations into the CRM for history Pairing engagement with quick, targeted video from product specialists (30–40 seconds, not a full walkaround) once the customer shows real intent This is a real-world look at the truth most dealers are learning the hard way: AI tools don't work without a human behind them. You have to train it, guide it, and integrate it into your process because the goal isn't to automate relationships…it's to protect them. If you're a GM, BDC director, sales leader, or operator trying to revive leads and stop wasting time, you'll want to hear exactly how a top Kia store is using AI to create speed, engagement, and competitive advantage. In this episode, we're diving into one of our favorite and most meaningful topics in ABA: relationship-based motivation. We talk about why reinforcement doesn't have to look like tokens, toys, or snacks and how you can become the most powerful reinforcer in the room. When learners enjoy being with us, motivation shifts from doing work for rewards to genuinely wanting to engage, connect, and participate. We share real-life examples from our own clinical experiences, including moments when we realized we weren't yet reinforcing enough and what changed when we leaned into play, connection, and authenticity. We also unpack common misconceptions around work versus play, breaks, and pairing, and explain why separating social interaction from reinforcement can unintentionally send the wrong message. This conversation applies not only to young learners but also to older students, parents, teachers, supervisees, and even supervisors. Strong relationships increase the value of everything else we do in ABA. When connection comes first, behavior change is more sustainable, more meaningful, and honestly, more enjoyable for everyone involved. What's Inside:Why relationship-based reinforcement is more powerful than external rewardsHow to become a preferred person, not just the person delivering demandsRethinking breaks, play, and motivation in everyday sessionsWhy authentic connection matters across learners, families, and superviseesMentioned in This Episode:Episode 221: ESDM in Action: Embedding Goals in Daily Routines and PlayThe Science Behind ESDM: Why Relationship Matters as Much as ReinforcementHowToABA.com/joinHow to ABA on YouTubeFind us on FacebookFollow us on Instagram

This powerful dual-coaching session with Coaches Zoe and Cole brings you inside The Path to witness the transformation of Jason and Jim. Jason is 50 days alcohol-free but still tormented by the idea that he's lost his place in his social circle, grappling with the fear of sacrificing his identity as he removes the "existential glue" of drinking. Jim reveals the intense, internal conflict of the "punching bag" who is desperately trying to manage stress and avoid the "embarrassment" of an emotional breakdown. Both coaches showcase the fact that alcohol created an artificially high reference point for pleasure. They discuss the vital work of understanding how to reset dopamine after quitting alcohol, which is key to restoring the capacity for simple, natural joy. Listen in as Jason and Jim discover the freedom that comes from embracing vulnerability and choosing self-compassion over a constant battle. In Jason's session: Spotting reward cues that masquerade as “treats.” Two-minute resets that interrupt autopilot. Habit friction: move it, hide it, swap it. “Next right thing” planning for 5–9 p.m. Data-not-drama journaling you'll actually use. How to reset dopamine after quitting alcohol with tiny pleasures. The first snowstorm of the season didn't just test trucks—it tested systems. We sat down with Justin Thomas, operations manager at Lazer Tow in Kansas City and part of the Cardinal Legacy Towing Group, to unpack how teams managed ETAs when hills iced over, why side streets often beat clogged interstates, and what happens when real-world experience meets structured training. From the cab to the classroom, Justin brings a rare mix of heavy haul, RGN, and rail-sector instruction to show how safer methods and sharper decisions keep people and revenue protected. We dig into the October training series that combined EV and alternative-fuel response, a one-day light-duty course, and a two-day heavy recovery program—scheduled to respect operators' weekends and, yes, a Chiefs game. The surprise highlight: competitors sharing a room, swapping numbers, and leaving with common safety standards. Listen as host Amy Rodquist-Kodet, Health Coach with UK HR Health and Wellness, shares simple, research-backed practices to help steady your mood during the dark Winter months. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) impacts millions each year, but small actions—light exposure, gentle movement and self-compassion—can make a meaningful difference. Amy says, “These practices aren't about fixing everything at once; they're about shifting your internal weather by a few degrees, building resilience over time.”Key Points:• Light: Morning light exposure is a powerful cue for your circadian rhythm. Even a short burst of brightness—like turning toward a window or a bright lamp—can support a more positive circadian rhythm.• Movement: Just 10 minutes of low-intensity movement can increase BDNF, a brain chemical tied to emotional stability and resilience. Think of gentle movements like rolling your shoulders or shifting in your seat.• Self-Compassion: Brief moments of self-kindness reduce stress and regulate the nervous system. Pairing a small action with a compassionate phrase—such as “I deserve steadiness and kindness”—makes the practice more powerful and sustainable.

Send us a textWhat if the most powerful tool on a crisis scene isn't a badge or a diagnosis, but a practiced partnership? We continue our conversation with Dr. Sarah Abbott about co-response and unpack how pairing clinicians with police changes the outcome of calls involving mental health, substance use, and high-stress events—from domestic incidents with kids present to house fires and welfare checks where information is thin.We trace the arc from a pioneering certificate at William James College to statewide intensives built on scenario-based, hands-on training. Instead of chasing labels, the curriculum teaches behavior reading, de-escalation under pressure, and language that preserves dignity while lowering risk. We dig into veterans' mental health and firearm culture, highlighting lethal means safety training that helps clinicians speak credibly about storage, temporary transfer, and time-limited access without shaming or seizing. A vivid field story shows how clear communication with dispatch and officers can soften the room, protect everyone on scene, and build trust that lasts past one call. The conversation widens to where co-response goes next. Through Abbott Solutions for Justice and the International Co-Responder Alliance, these practices are spreading across states and overseas, with growing momentum on college campuses that function like small cities. We explore why campus police and clinicians need shared playbooks, how programs like Johns Hopkins are leading, and what it takes to turn skepticism into skill—consistently, respectfully, and at scale. If you care about first responder wellness, community safety, and practical tools that work at 2 a.m., this is your roadmap for doing crisis response better.Subscribe for more conversations on co-response, first responder mental health, and practical de-escalation. Dawn Anderson is the Chief Human Resources Officer at Butler Snow LLP, a law firm with nearly 400 lawyers across 25 offices. With more than 30 years of HR experience and both an MBA and law degree from the University of Georgia, Dawn brings a unique perspective to law firm leadership. After two decades in HR leadership roles in retail and manufacturing, Dawn transitioned to the legal industry where she now oversees Butler Snow's HR function and operations. She has taught as an adjunct professor teaching college-level courses and facilitating countless training seminars on leadership, management, and human resources. She is also an active member of the Atlanta Association of Legal Administrators, where she previously served as board member and chapter president. WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS EPISODE ABOUT STRATEGIC HR LEADERSHIP Law firms often treat HR as a cost center or an administrative function that handles paperwork, processes bonuses, and deals with employee issues when they come up. But there's often a disconnect between what HR professionals actually do and how lawyers value that work. Administrative leaders get kept out of important conversations, even when those decisions directly affect people and performance. When HR leadership operates strategically and lawyers work with the professionals who understand people management, things change. Compensation systems become transparent and defensible instead of feeling like a black box. People get prepared for leadership roles instead of being promoted and left to figure it out. And firms make smarter decisions about retention, hiring, and succession planning because the work gets more intentional instead of reactive. In this episode of The Lawyer's Edge, Elise Holtzman is joined by Dawn Anderson to discuss building credibility as an HR leader in a law firm, why lawyers sometimes undervalue the work administrative professionals do, and how strategic people management changes both culture and business results. 2:49 - Dawn's journey from chemical engineering to HR with a JD and MBA 6:37 - Why lawyers sometimes undervalue administrative professionals 8:33 - Taking five years to get into the bonus process at her previous firm 9:33 - Creating a defensible bonus system in hours instead of days 14:42 - Building trust and credibility with attorneys using The First 90 Days approach 17:31 - The challenge of recruiting legal assistants in today's market 21:30 - Pairing experienced legal assistants with new attorneys as a training tool 24:18 - What "revenue enablers" means and why language matters 26:39 - Change management without the corporate jargon 28:28 - Getting the right people in the right seats 30:30 - Preparing people for partnership instead of just promoting them 33:32 - Why investing in people beats losing them to firms that will 38:04 - HR is everyone's job, not just HR's job MENTIONED IN HOW STRATEGIC HR TRANSFORMS LAW FIRM PERFORMANCE Butler Snow LLP | LinkedIn Dawn Anderson on LinkedIn The First 90 Days by Michael D. Podcasts Support Brain HealthOur brains are overloaded with screens and nonstop visual stimulation. Podcasts offer gentle, nourishing stimulation without the overwhelm.Instead of pulling your attention outward (like with videos), audio draws you inward into a grounded, reflective state.2. Podcasts Give Our Eyes the Rest They're CravingScreens are relentless — and our eyes feel it. Dryness, strain, headaches, and disrupted sleep become more common as the days fill with more screen time.Podcast listening becomes a screen-free ritual that gives the eyes a chance to repair and reset.3. Podcasts Pair Beautifully With Habits, Routines & RitualsThis is where podcasts shine. They don't just entertain — they anchor your daily rhythms.Pairing something enjoyable (listening) with something intentional (movement, tidying, resting) strengthens both habits — a core principle of habit science. This episode is the perfect warm-up for something special coming in December: a curated list of my favourite podcast episodes to support your nervous system, your sleep, your motivation, your emotional well-being, and your seasonal routines. Send us a textThinking about putting solar on your roof? We break down the real numbers and the hidden costs most sales pitches skip. From roof age and orientation to removal fees and financing traps, we map out the path that makes solar pay—and the scenarios where it stalls. If your shingles are nearing the end of their life, adding panels now can force an expensive remove-and-reinstall when you inevitably replace the roof. That extra step often adds years to your break-even point, even with improved panel efficiency and a federal tax credit available through 2032.We share practical benchmarks: a typical home using around 10,000 kWh annually may see a break-even just past ten years if the roof faces south around a 20-degree pitch. Shift that orientation or plan a reroof midstream and your payback stretches further. We also unpack why resale value isn't guaranteed. Some buyers love solar; others don't want the responsibility, especially if there's an outstanding loan. A financed system can complicate closing, and in some cases, buyers refuse to assume the remaining balance. For long-term owners, the strategy changes. Pairing a durable metal roof with a quality solar install can unlock decades of performance while avoiding mid-life tear-off costs. If you're building new, design with solar in mind: a clean, south-facing plane, thoughtful overhangs, and fewer penetrations. If you're retrofitting, demand multiple quotes, production models that include shading and degradation, and clear warranties on panels, inverters, and roof penetrations. We also cover inspection realities: panels can block access to shingles and flashings, so documentation and maintenance matter.Ready to make a smart call on solar? Kicking off the discussion with a full breakdown of the movie Showgirls, ACOFAE is in awe of the production. Sparking discussions about shedding child star image, internalized misogyny, and sexual freedom, the movie Showgirls is a spectacle for the eyes and for the brain. Taylor's discussion focuses on how women can't do anything right in the eyes of society, and that it seems to be that pain is rewarded instead of joy - and that joy makes women talentless.
