Vous les avez forcément remarqués : dans presque tous les QR codes, trois gros carrés noirs apparaissent dans trois des quatre coins. Mais à quoi servent-ils exactement ?Contrairement à ce que l'on pourrait croire, ces carrés ne contiennent pas directement les informations du QR code. Leur fonction est beaucoup plus fondamentale : ils permettent à l'appareil photo de votre téléphone de repérer immédiatement le code dans l'image.Ces motifs sont appelés « finder patterns », ou motifs de détection. Ils sont placés en haut à gauche, en haut à droite et en bas à gauche. En détectant leur position respective, le logiciel peut déterminer instantanément la taille du QR code, son inclinaison et surtout son orientation.C'est grâce à eux que vous pouvez scanner un QR code à l'endroit, à l'envers ou même en tenant votre téléphone de côté. L'appareil comprend tout seul comment remettre le code dans le bon sens.Mais pourquoi seulement trois carrés, et pas quatre ? Justement parce que l'absence d'un quatrième motif permet au système de savoir immédiatement quel coin est lequel. Si quatre motifs identiques étaient disposés symétriquement, déterminer l'orientation serait plus compliqué.Autre détail ingénieux : chacun de ces grands carrés possède une structure très particulière composée de zones noires et blanches. Lorsqu'une caméra les analyse dans une direction donnée, elle retrouve approximativement une succession de proportions 1-1-3-1-1. Cette signature visuelle est suffisamment inhabituelle pour que le logiciel identifie très rapidement la présence d'un QR code.Et les QR codes cachent d'autres astuces. On trouve parfois à l'intérieur de petits carrés supplémentaires : ce sont des motifs d'alignement. Ils servent notamment à corriger la perspective lorsqu'un QR code est photographié de biais ou imprimé sur une surface légèrement courbe.Le QR code possède également un système de correction d'erreurs extrêmement efficace. Une partie du code peut être abîmée, rayée ou même cachée sans empêcher sa lecture. Selon le niveau de correction choisi, jusqu'à environ 30 % du code peut être reconstitué. C'est d'ailleurs ce qui permet d'insérer un logo au milieu de certains QR codes.Le QR code a été inventé en 1994 par l'entreprise japonaise Denso Wave, notamment pour suivre les pièces détachées dans les usines automobiles. Son nom signifie « Quick Response », réponse rapide.Et sa capacité est étonnante : dans sa version maximale, un QR code peut contenir plus de 7 000 chiffres.Ainsi, les trois gros carrés que nous considérons comme décoratifs sont en réalité la clé de tout le système : avant même de lire les données, ils indiquent au téléphone où regarder… et comment regarder. Chief investigator Kristina Perkins discusses how the Dept of Justice has created a new Faud Center that focuses on items such as the Tax Tariff Fraud. It ia callied the National Fraud Detection Center. What Kristina likes about it is that it will bring all the agencies together and is a multi-agency team that will investigate government program fraud. They will try to break down institutional silos usuing analysts across a variety of communities and they will leverage multiple technologies. Hopefully, from a federal level, this is something that we can all benefit from. Kristina goes on to talk about recent scams surfacing in the Santa Barbara communitity such as QR Code Scams.

Heute beschäftigen wir uns mit der Biografie von Jasper Maskelyne, der in den 30er Jahren in dritter Generation die damals in Großbritannien sehr bekannte Magierfamilie auf der Bühne vertrat. Doch mit Beginn des Zweiten Weltkriegs wollte er ab 1939 seinem Land mit seinen magischen Fähigkeiten im Kampf gegen die Nazis helfen. Er landete bei der Camouflage-Einheit der Royal Engineers und soll mit Hilfe seiner „magischen Fähigkeiten“ nicht nur den Hafen von Alexandria versetzt und damit deutsche Bomben ins Leere fallen gelassen haben. Er soll auch durch ein von ihm fingiertes Täuschungsmanöver den „Wüstenfuchs“ Erwin Rommel getäuscht und den Nazis damit eine schmerzhafte Niederlage zugefügt haben. All diese Geschichten finden sich in seiner Biografie. Doch sind diese Abenteuer wirklich wahr – oder täuschte Maskelyne auch hier?
