This week on The Business of Open Source, I talked with Allard Buijze, the CTO and founder at AxonIQ. We talked a lot about the importance of open source for getting feedback on your product and validating your idea — or not. One of the things we talked about was how the beginning of AxonIQ was tied to the same consultancy that developed Spring Source; Rod Johnson, the founder and CEO of Spring Source was on the podcast a couple months ago and you can listen to that episode here. We talked about: Spinning the company out of the an established company, and in particular how Allard ended up becoming co-founders with his former boss, and got buy-in from their previous employer to found the company after the open source project took open. How they underestimated some elements of human psychology around sunk costs and how it would impact people's willingness to move from the open source project to the paid productWhy they originally had two products, and then decided to merge them into one single productHow the key turning point for the company was when a new salesperson joined the company and convinced them to quadruple the prices; the result was both an increase in revenue per customer but also an increase in the number of customers. How they evaluated the success of the decision to consolidate the two products into one. How product market fit is a journey, not a destination. How each individual hire can impact the way your product and project is perceived in the world; and it's important to get alignment on what people are saying. The importance the avoiding confusion among potential customers***Are you leading an open source company and struggling with product strategy? I will help you improve the quality of your conversations, so people understand your product sooner, remain more engaged in the conversation and understand the relationship between your product and project. This week on The Business of Open Source I had Rod Johnson, founder/CEO of Spring Source and creator of the Spring Framework (as well as board member of many other open source companies) on to talk about Spring, monetizing open source and what's changed in the open source ecosystem since 2008. Key takeaways:Consulting was burning the entire team out, and that threatened the health not just of the consulting business, but of the open source project as wellAn amazing salesperson can often sell anything, but that doesn't mean that you'll be able scale, because your entire sales team is not likely to be incredibly brilliant Spring Source ended up not monetizing Spring at all — but rather worked on monetizing with products that were complementary to Spring. “We monetized Spring by not monetizing Spring, by using it to open the door” The moment that the company really started to see success as a product company was when the team stopped thinking about what they wanted to build and instead focused on what customers where telling them that they wanted. The risk of having a bunch of very good engineers on your team is that they're excited about solving hard technical problems — but your customers might want something that is not very technically challenging or interesting. A major part of the job of a company leader is to talk to your team and get them on board with your plans The environment around monetizing open source projects has changed — there are things that worked in 2008 that wouldn't work today, and things that didn't work then that would be fine nowIf you love (insert your favorite open source project here), it has to have a sustainable economic modelIt's really critical to have a rationale behind what functionality goes in your product and what goes into your open source projectAt the end we talked briefly about Open Source Founders Summit, a conference for leaders in open source businesses happening this May 27th and 28th in Paris.

Long nights, a lot of trial and error, high expectations, and pressure.   Four years later, BLK & Bold is celebrating their anniversary and rolling out their new cold brew. They have made it through covid, introduced new products, expanded their work environment and employee base, all while making their 5 percent contribution to youth programming a consistent priority. As they move into their fifth year in the industry they look back in reflection with a smile on their face as they know that the road hasn't been easy but has most definitely been worth it.   Rod Johnson and Pernell Ceszar are two first-generation college graduates that became young black entrepreneurs with a mission in mind—to impact their community. BLK & Bold speaks to the products that they produce, coffee and tea, but it also speaks to them as individuals. They want to live, educate, support, and lead boldly. They wish to do so not only within their business and their community, but other communities that look like theirs and which they came from.   DURING THIS EPISODE YOU'LL LEARN: How they successfully built BLK & Bold with no prior industry experience Tips for starting a coffee and tea business The importance of building your business around the social impact model How to start and scale a social enterprise The importance of reinvesting in the community Ways to identify a social cause suited for your business Why building strategic relationships is important How to attract partnerships from major brands like Amazon and Target For complete show notes and resources mentioned for this episode go to: blacktobusiness.com/102 Thank you so much for listening! This month on the Seed To Cup podcast, Sprudge contributor Giovanni Fillari interviews BLK & Bold Specialty Beverages Co-Founder Rod Johnson. "We are a coffee roastery located in Des Moines, Iowa, that bridges the gap between specialty coffee and community impact," says Johnson. "We were looking to do something more meaningful, and we are checking that box by contributing a portion of our proceeds to organizations that support youth in need." BLK & Bold pledges 5% of its profits to initiatives aligned to sustaining youth programming, enhancing workforce development, and eradicating youth homelessness. They've enjoyed a meteoric rise in popularity and sales over the last few years, becoming one of America's best-recognized coffee brands along the way, with major placements via Target, Whole Foods, and other national retailers.  Johnson talks about their pivot from non-profit work to the coffee industry and the connections made along the way. Fillari asks about the company's collaborations with Ben & Jerry's and the NBA, accomplishments Johnson is most proud of, and what he hopes to achieve in the comings months and years. Spring framework is probably the most popular and most successful application framework for Java. Writing a server or a web application before Spring was cumbersome. And it required an insane amount of boilerplate. Even in already bloated Java language. This framework was created sort of as a by-product for a book by Rod Johnson, back in 2003. He wanted to build an alternative to heavyweight Enterprise Java Beans standard. What was just an idea sparked to be one of the largest ecosystems for Java. We've seen it time and time again — entrepreneurs build a business driven by an existing passion for a product or service. They then leverage that knowledge of an industry's pain points to find new and exciting ways to innovate within it. But we've also heard stories of the exact opposite. The entrepreneurs with absolutely no industry experience that fight tooth and nail to break into a market they know nothing about. The cofounders of Blk & Bold fall into that latter camp, building an online coffee company with zero knowledge of coffee roasting, no experience making a D2C website, and a nearly nonexistent interest in specialty coffee. They dove into their industry blind, but they saw a market gap ripe with opportunity - an opportunity that could not only drive business value but create meaningful social impact. “We knew we wanted to do good,” Rod Johnson says. “We didn't want to just build a business to line our pockets and go sit on a beach and drinking drinks with umbrellas. We want to do something else. We want to make sure that we can have profound impact. We just didn't know profound would manifest into working with Ben and Jerry's and Congresswoman and Corey Bush. That was definitely not on my vision board. And I just want to continue to avail myself to be a servant making black and bold a servant to those opportunities.” Johnson is the Co-founder of BLK & Bold. Before founding the company, he admits to preferring tea over coffee, but when his friend — and now co-founder — came to him with an idea for a new kind of coffee company, Rod knew it was a vision he couldn't ignore. So how did Rod and his co-founder break into the 102 billion dollar US coffee market with no knowledge of the industry? How did they make Blk & Bold stand out among competitors? And how have they turned their own experiences growing up into a social good mission that's impacting the nation? Find out all that and more on today's episode of The Journey.Main Takeaways:Create Synergy with other Do-Good Brands: Serving the community and giving back through your business can result in unforeseen benefits, including the opportunity to work with other great brands that care. There is a lot of synergy behind building a community around doing good, and when you partner with others, your reach is expanded exponentially. Natural Curiosity Can Compensate for Know-How: Even if you're not an expert in a field that you're interested in starting a business in, you can still do it! Interest and curiosity will take you down all of the right rabbit holes to fill in your knowledge and become a subject matter expert in your industry. Plus, experimentation will allow you to learn by doing, and maybe even find a way of doing something that no one else in the industry has thought of because they have blinders on.Unseen Value of Long-standing Co-founder Relationships: The depth that comes from having a long-standing relationship with your co-founder can really come into play and shine when times are tough. A deeper personal understanding as to how the other person deals with unforeseen circumstances or hiccups can lead to better advice, powerful encouragement, and quicker solutions.---This season of the Journey is produced by Mission.org and brought to you by UPS. Rod Johnson Chats about the Spring Framework Early Days, Languages Post-Java, & Rethinking CI/CD

Today on The InfoQ Podcast, Wes talks with Rod Johnson. Rod is famously responsible for the creation of the Spring Framework. The two talk about the early years of the framework and provides some of the history of its creation. After discussing Spring, Wes and Rod discuss languages he’s been involved with since Java (these include Scala and TypeScript). He talks a bit about what he liked (and didn’t like) about each. Finally, the two wrap by discussing Atomist and how they’re trying to change the idea of software delivery from a statically defined pipeline (located in individual repositories) to an event hub that drives a series of actions for software delivery. He describes this as creating an API for your software. Why listen to this podcast: - The initial origins of the Spring Framework really came about through a process of trying to write a really great book about J2EE in 2002. It was through that process that Rod Johnson found he felt there was a better way and ultimately lead to the creation of the Spring Framework. - What started as examples and references, became the Spring Framework. By 2005 there were about 2 million downloads of the Spring Framework. After leaving VMWare in 2013, Rod spent several years working with Scala. One of the elegant features that really attracted Rod to Scala was how everything is an expression. One of the things he didn’t like was an affinity to overly complex approaches to problem solving. - Today at Atomist, Rod does a lot of work in Node. He really enjoys the robust extra layer of typing over a dynamic language and the ability to escape to JavaScript if needed (similar to escaping types with reflection in Java found in the internals of the Spring Framework). - Atomist, the company he founded after leaving VMWare, is rethinking CI/CD from a static pipeline defined in every repository to an event-driven system that defines how to respond to specific events (such as a push from Git). For example, all pushes with Spring Boot can be configured to be scanned with SonarQube or because a push has kubespec it might get deployed to a K8 cluster. He describes this as creating an API for your software. - One of the reasons Atomist integrates so tightly with Slack (and other similar messaging platforms) is because it allows developers to shape their own relevant messages. By joining (or leaving channels), people are able to subscribe to only the information they actually want. Meeting developers inside Slack is an important interface for Atomist. Girls At Our Best special with guitarist Jez Alan in conversation  The group initially consisted of vocalist Judy "Jo" Evans, guitarist James "Jez" Alan, bassist Gerard "Terry" Swift and drummer Chris Oldroyd. They took their new name from a line in their track "Warm Girls", released as the B-side to their self-financed 1980 debut single "Getting Nowhere Fast". The single, released in April 1980 on their own Record Records, reached No. 9 on the UK Indie Chart. Oldroyd departed to join Music for Pleasure, and was replaced by Paul Simon (formerly of Limmie Funk Limited, Neo, Radio Stars, the Civilians and Cowboys International). Second single "Politics", backed by "It's Fashion!", was released in November 1980, also on Record Records. It was distributed by Rough Trade, reaching No. 12. Simon was replaced by Darren Carl Harper (formerly of the Expelaires) before Girls at Our Best! recorded their session for John Peel on 17 February 1981, which was first broadcast 23 February 1981. The group's next single, "Go for Gold", issued in June 1981 by Happy Birthday Records, became their biggest Indie Chart hit, reaching No. 4. On 20 October 1981, the group released their sole album, Pleasure. Rod Johnson shared drumming duties with Harper, who had left the band during the recording process in summer 1981. The album, the first to be released on the Happy Birthday label, came complete with a "Pleasure Bag" of stickers and postcards. Pleasure reached No. 2 on the UK Indie Chart and No. 60 on the UK Albums Chart., followed by the band's fourth single, "Fast Boyfriends" (backed by "This Train"), released by Happy Birthday in October 1981. Girls at Our Best! split in 1982. The band's 1981 Peel session, produced by Dale Griffin, was released as a 12" EP in 1987 by Strange Fruit Records. It featured "China Blue" and "This Train" on the A-side and a medley (titled "Getting Beautiful Warm Gold Fast from Nowhere") on the B-side. Pleasure was reissued in 1994 by Vinyl Japan in an expanded edition that included the first two singles and "This Train". Another reissue, issued by Cherry Red Records on 18 May 2009, included the 1994 edition's bonus material as well as a four-song 1981 Richard Skinner session and a previously unreleased demo track. A 2014 double-vinyl reissue of the album by Optic Nerve Recordings featured the original album on the first LP and all four singles on the second.
