Andy Weir's first time at the Hollywood rodeo was a singular trip. His debut novel, “The Martian,” went from self-published project to blockbuster, best picture-nominated film starring Matt Damon. His third book, “Project Hail Mary,” was also a sensation, and its adaptation, starring Ryan Gosling as a middle school science teacher tasked with saving humanity from slow extinction, charts warmly familiar territory: a lone man, stuck in space far from Earth, solving science problem after science problem with many a humorous aside. Weir joined the Book Review's podcast and spoke to the host Gilbert Cruz about the similarities and differences between Mark Watney and Ryland Grace (the main characters of “The Martian” and “Project Hail Mary”), his second novel “Artemis” and the alien character that readers have fallen in love with. Yellowstone National Park was the first national park in the world, created in 1872. Sometime around 66 million years ago, a meteor smashed into what is today the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico.  The impact of that event changed life on Earth in ways that are still evident today.  Evidence for this impact wasn't obvious. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Chine Communists continue to harass the church China's National People's Congress passed the innocuously named “Law on Promoting Ethnic Unity and Progress” last week.  The new law requires the enforcement of a strong sense of Chinese identity across society. This would continue China's suppression of religious and ethnic minorities. It would also affect social organizations and churches.  International Christian Concern noted, “Christian home churches are an attempt to escape government scrutiny, but even they are often raided and their members arrested on charges of working against the interests of the state.” China is ranked 17th on the Open Doors' World Watch List of the most oppressive countries to be a Christian.  Trump postpones trip to meet with Chinese President China will have to reschedule a meeting with the United States as the war in Iran continues. U.S. President Donald Trump said Tuesday he will postpone his trip to Beijing. The trip was scheduled for the end of the month. President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping plan to discuss trade tariffs. The trade war between the two countries has been on pause since last October.  Commenting on the postponement, President Trump said, “Because of the [Iran] war, I want to be here. I have to be here.” Israel killed Iran's top security official on Monday Israel killed Iran's top security official, Ali Larijani, in a strike on Monday. Larijani was likely running the country since U.S. and Israeli strikes killed Iran's supreme leader last month. The recent war has lasted nearly three weeks so far. President Trump told reporters yesterday that America's involvement in the war may be ending soon.  Listen. TRUMP: “We're not ready to leave yet, but we'll be leaving in the near future. We'll be leaving in pretty much the very near future. But, right now, they've been decimated from every standpoint. We've had great support from countries in the Middle East. Great support. But we've had essentially no support from NATO.” Paul Ehrlich, father of population control, died Paul Ehrlich, known as the father of population control, died last Friday at the age of 93. The biology professor and population scientist wrote the 1968 book, The Population Bomb. Ehrlich falsely claimed population growth would cause widespread starvation. He promoted the murder of unborn babies and mass sterilization to stem the alleged tide of overpopulation.  His work inspired governments and organizations to push contraception, abortion, and sterilization on the world.  Hebrews 9:27 says, “It is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment.” Scotland Parliament votes against legalized assisted suicide Scotland's Parliament voted Tuesday against a bill to legalize assisted suicide. The vote ends two years of national debate on the issue. Alisdair Hungerford-Morgan, Chief Executive of Right To Life UK, said, “This is a great victory for the most vulnerable in our society. They deserve protection and care, not a pathway to suicide. If this legislation had passed, countless vulnerable people would have been pressured or coerced into ending their lives.”  Moody Bible victorious in religious liberty case In the United States, a Christian college won its religious freedom case against the Chicago Board of Education. Previously, the city's public schools blocked The Moody Bible Institute of Chicago from participating in its student-teaching program. The college could only participate if it compromised its Christian hiring practices. The public schools backed down after the lawsuit.  Jeremiah Galus with Alliance Defending Freedom commented, “We're hopeful other public officials will take note that they can't inject themselves illegally and unconstitutionally into a religious non-profit's hiring practices.” YouVersion: No AI chatbots to answer theological questions And finally, a leading digital Bible platform is not implementing artificial intelligence chatbots for answering theological questions. I would like the option of purchasing a brand-new car with a manual transmission and windows rolled up and down with a hand-crank. I would like to keep pedaling my bicycle. I would like to cut the number of holidays with commercial mandates by 80 percent. I would prefer that we not set the air-conditioners to 60 when it's 65 degrees outside. This doesn't mean I want to get rid of all the air-conditioners but could we maybe take it easy on the frostbite-in-July overkill of it all?My Heretic Wishlist for American Skiing includes but is not limited to: more surface lifts, especially to serve terrain parks, high-altitude exposed terrain, and expert pods; on-resort lodging that does not still require a commute-by-personal-vehicle to reach the lifts; and thoughtful terrain management that retains ungroomed sections for skiers who like things about skiing other than going fast.Waterville Valley is doing all of these things. It is perhaps the only major American ski area in decades to replace a chairlift with a surface lift on a non-beginner terrain pod, and the only one to build two new T-bars this century. A planned gondola would connect Waterville Valley the town with Waterville Valley the ski area, correcting an only-in-America setup that separates these inseparable places by two miles of road. The glade network grows annually in both subtle and obvious ways.This is not a ski area going in reverse. Waterville is modern and keeps modernizing. The four-year-old Tecumseh bubble six-pack, though bookended with T-bars, is one of the nicest chairlifts in America. Skiers still go groomer-kaboom on morning cord. Suburban office-park dads with interstate commutes and a habit of lecturing the Facebook Commons about the virtues of snow tires can still park their 42-wheel-drive Abrams-Caterpillar-F-15,000 Tanktruck in sub-parking lot 42Z and walk uphill to the lifts. But Waterville Valley is one of a handful of American ski areas, along with Killington and Deer Valley and Winter Park, that is embracing all of our luxe cultural excesses while pursuing the very un-American ambition of putting more skiers close to skiing.No ski area is perfect. For all the cash saved on those T-bars, peak-day Waterville lift tickets still hit $145. The mountain's season pass is the second-most expensive single-mountain season passes in New England – more than a top-line Epic Pass (an adult WV pass includes a free pass for a kid age 6 to 12, which is great if you have one of those). That's bold pricing for the 22nd-largest ski area in New England, especially one that still spins three Stadeli chairlifts that predate the extinction of the dinosaurs. And two high-speed chairlifts is not a lot of high-speed chairlifts for a 2,000-vertical-foot ski area (though about half of New England's 2,000-footers run just two or fewer detaches).Yeah I know. Sick burn from someone who was waxing about surface lifts four paragraphs ago. I may have collected too many ski area Lego blocks in my mental bucket, and they don't always click together back here on planet Earth. “More villages,” I say while dismissing Aspen as a subsidized simulacrum of itself. “Big fast lifts rule,” I say while setting off fire alarms as first-generation chairlifts disintegrate and the cost of their most basic replacements escalates. “No-grooming, all-glades makes the best ski area,” I say, while condemning resort operators for $356 lift tickets that dam the masses. “Vail is too expensive,” I say. “Vail is too cheap,” I also say. “Modernize our chairlifts,” I say while celebrating the joy of riding an antique Riblet double. I endorse ski areas splitting off from conglomerates and ski areas joining them. These narratives can feel contradictory at best and schizophrenic at worst.But that tension is part of what draws me to lift-served ski areas, where two things central to my worldview – wild nature and human invention – merge. Or perhaps more accurately, collide. Both forces act at all times not only to extinguish one another, but themselves: above-freezing temps trash two feet of new snow; bad liftline management cancels out the capacity benefits of a $12 million lift upgrade. Making a ski area function, then, requires continual tweaking, of both the nuanced and look-at-us-press-release variety. A ski area is a business, sure, but that's almost a coincidence. The act of building and running a ski area is foremost an art, architecture, and engineering project that requires a somewhat madcap conductor to succeed. As with any artform, there is no one correct and final way to build a ski area. The variety is central to skiing's appeal. But there are operator/artist attributes - flexibility, inventiveness, consistency tempered by openness to change - that contribute to the overall quality and cohesion of the individual ski area experience in the context of competing ski areas. Smith says it is 900. Exact capacity varies from lift-to-lift, however. Lift Blog itemizes hourly capacities of between 800 and 1,200 for four of Smugglers' Notch's double chairs, between 1,000 and 1,200 for four of Mt. Spokane's fleet of Riblet doubles, and 1,000 for Waterville's Lower Meadows double. We all know, however, that the hourly capacity for a double chair is however many people are in line minus the number not paying attention minus singles who refuse to ride with anyone. After a succession of owners - one of whom stripped all the chairlifts off the bump - failed to bring skiing back, the Leelanau Conservancy recently took ownership of the property. Skiing will return as an officially sanctioned activity, though unfortunately without a lift or snowmaking. I would have at least liked to have seen a ropetow. This hypothetical concept is commonly stated in pop science blogs and we are guilty of doing the same here at Cheap Astronomy. However, it's not necessarily correct. As with most things relating to the Universe, all we can really talk about is the observable Universe. All evidence available does suggest that it emerged from a point source 13.8 billion years ago, but if the actual Universe is bigger than the observable Universe – and it very likely is – then it's not clear that the whole Universe emerged from that point source.   Dear Cheap Astronomy – Is space-based solar power the solution to all our problems? Well, not all our problems and while SBSP is technically feasible, it may not be economically viable. The general idea of SBSP is that you have a solar collecting facility in Earth orbit, which then transmits the energy collected as microwaves down to the Earth's surface. Microwaves are preferred since they pass through the Earth's atmosphere relatively well and should not harm aircraft, ground infrastructure or people if they happen to get in the way. P.T. Barnum realized very quickly that entertainment is currency and was one of the first to use outdoor mass media. Dave Young: Welcome to the Empire Builders Podcast, teaching business owners the not-so-secret techniques that took famous businesses from Mom-and-Pop to major brands. Steven Semple is a marketing consultant, story collector and storyteller. I’m Steven’s sidekick and business partner, Dave Young. [Tommy Cool A/C & Plumbing Ad] Dave Young: Welcome back to the Empire Builders Podcast, Dave Young here and alongside Steven Semple. And if you were going to tell what Steven’s role is in this and what my role is in this, if we were going to use a theme that revolved around today’s topic, it would be Steven is the ringmaster in center ring. Stephen Semple: That’s where you’re going? Okay. Dave Young: And I’m like the chief clown driving the clown car because that’s where I’d rather be. We’re going to talk about Ringling Brothers, Barnum and Bailey. Are we just talking about P.T. Barnum? Stephen Semple: We’re going to talk about P.T. Barnum because that’s really the origin of all of this is. Dave Young: P.T. Barnum. Stephen Semple: Yeah. Dave Young: I mean, what a guy. And I’ve never read a biography or anything, but what I know is, I’m guessing that he maybe invented the three-ring circus, but it’s the kind of thing where, man, to me, what he invented was just constant distraction. Stephen Semple: Yeah. Dave Young: Right? Like you go to a three-ring circus, it’s just going to be you’re going to be constantly distracted because you can’t see everything that happens in a three-ring circus. Stephen Semple: It’s true. Dave Young: And so there’s so many examples. We can talk about those. I’ll let you get going because I would just talk about all this stuff. Stephen Semple: Well, here’s the interesting thing. There’s a lot of historians who believe that his was the first use of mass outdoor advertising in America. Dave Young: Okay. That, I believe. Stephen Semple: Right? Dave Young: Sure. Stephen Semple: That he really invented the use of that as a medium. Couple of interesting things he went through. So his full name is Phineas Taylor Barnum, and he was born in Bethel, Connecticut in 1810. And he wasn’t born wealthy or talented or connected, but he kind of knew that attention was a form of currency. And it’s kind of interesting when we think about the world today with social media and things along that lines, attention is a form of currency. Dave Young: Oh, absolutely. Yeah. Stephen Semple: And by the age of 12, he was selling snacks, lottery tickets, anything he could do to make a buck. And he was quoted as saying, “I’m a showman by profession and all the gilding shall make nothing else of me,” right? Like he just basically saw those things. So his first commercial breakthrough, and it was also pretty controversial, was promoting Joice Heth, a Black woman, that he marketed as George Washington’s 161-year-old nurse. Dave Young: Okay. Stephen Semple: Guess what? It was not true. Dave Young: Well, so what year was this? When was this? Stephen Semple: 1835. Dave Young: Good grief. 1835. Stephen Semple: Yeah. Dave Young: Okay. Stephen Semple: Yeah. But, but he was this relentless promoter who believed if there’s no story, there’s no audience. So the next thing he did was what he called the American Museum, and this started in 1841, ran from 1841 to 1865. And basically in 1841, he bought Scudder’s American Museum, and he renamed it Barnum’s American Museum in New York. And basically, again, this is considered one of the very first modern mass entertainment facilities, and here’s what he did. He exhibited things of science, oddity, theater, stunts. There was new attractions weekly, so people had to come back. And there was live performances like the General Tom Thumb, magicians, and the first use of mass outdoor advertising, went all around New York City putting up billboards, pasting billboards up all over the city. And on peak days, it’s reported that on peak days, he drew 15,000 people into a single building without electricity, AC, or cars to transport them around. 15,000 people. Dave Young: Boy. That’s amazing. Yeah. Stephen Semple: And Barnum would talk about people don’t want facts. People want astonishment. So for 25 years, this museum was really the epicenter in America for entertainment until it burned down in 1865. And he lost everything when it burned down. He built a second one. Five years later, it burned down, right? But Barnum realized he was going to reinvent himself again, this time as a public speaker, giving lectures. He did lectures on success and temperance of business. He wrote the book, The Art of Money-Getting. Dave Young: Okay. Yeah. Stephen Semple: In 1871, his biggest, final act was at age 61… So think about this. This is the 19th century, age 61, our age, he decides he’s going to launch the circus, P.T. Barnum’s Grand Traveling Museum, Menagerie, Caravan and Hippodrome. Dave Young: There’s nothing easy about that. Stephen Semple: Right. And this later merged with James Bailey’s to become Barnum and Bailey’s Greatest Show on Earth. Now, here’s the interesting thing that they did. So yeah, it was this massive traveling menagerie. They had to have trains custom-built to move elephants and equipment, and they had the world’s biggest circus tent and performers from all around the world. But the part that’s also really interesting is they had a team of people, who would travel into the towns ahead of them, and they would put up billboards, posters, promote the crap out of it, carnival barkers, all that other thing, and to the degree where even the setting up of the tents became a spectacle. Because, of course, they would use the elephants to raise the tent, and people would gather so they would hear so much about it. People would gather the day that it was coming into town to watch the tents and everything be put up. And he recognized that was part of the show. Dave Young: Yeah. Oh, yeah. Stephen Semple: Part of the show was long before they got there, and then they’re arriving, and then there’s the show, the buildup of all that energy and excitement to the show. And this was the other part I love about. So he would talk about you must capture the attention before you can persuade. So we talk about his Wizard of Ads partners. What is Roy Williams, founder of the Wizard of Ads, say? “Entertainment is the currency used to buy the time and the attention of a busy and distracted consumer.” P.T. Barnum, “You must capture attention before you persuade.” Dave Young: Stay tuned. We’re going to wrap up this story and tell you how to apply this lesson to your business right after this. [Using Stories To Sell] Dave Young: Let’s pick up our story where we left off and, trust me, you haven’t missed a thing. Stephen Semple: P.T. Barnum, “You must capture attention before you persuade.” Dave Young: Mm-hmm. Yup. Stephen Semple: “People remember stories, not features,” he would talk about that, and, “Curiosity is the strongest human emotion,” right? Dave Young: I love it. Yeah. Stephen Semple: These were the things that he talked about. But again, there would be this buildup before he arrived into town. And what’s really interesting, this idea, I did a variation of this idea when I was in university. So when I was in university, I had a business with two business partners. We ran a mobile DJ business, did really super well. We did all the maritime provinces. We did over a million dollars a year in sales doing this. But what do you do in the summertime? Dave Young: What do you do in the summertime? Stephen Semple: Because what we were doing is we were doing, like we weren’t doing weddings, we were doing high school and university dances, so there was nothing for us to do. But what we discovered was, I’m Canadian, what we discovered was every little town in Canada has a hockey arena that’s not being used in the summertime. Dave Young: There you go. So you put on a dance. Stephen Semple: Right. So we would rent the arena for next to nothing. We would put on a dance, and we would charge a gate. So how do we promote it? We had a team of people going into the town a couple of weeks before we showed up with the show, putting up billboards, posters, and talking to people in a town about this show, exactly what P.T. Barnum did, an advanced troop to build excitement for the show that’s coming to town. Dave Young: Yeah. I love it. Stephen Semple: Yeah. It works so well that we actually ended up doing a joint marketing thing after a few years with Pepsi. Dave Young: Very cool. Very cool. Stephen Semple: But it’s that idea, create excitement, create all this stuff, advance in town, and tensions required. Stories are powerful. Curiosity is the most powerful thing. Attention is a currency. Dave Young: Yeah, absolutely true. And when we started the episode, I said, “Oh, he invented the three-ring…” I don’t think he invented it. He knew. I think when I hear the story that he didn’t start Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey till he was 61- Stephen Semple: Isn’t that crazy? Dave Young: … he’s just applying all the things he knew. Stephen Semple: Yes. Dave Young: Right? He knew. And I mean, I’ve even heard Roy talk about this. When you talk about going, sending an advanced team to say, “You’re going to be amazed. It’s going to be great. It’s going to be wonderful. You won’t believe your eyes,” you can take that back to… One example is John the Baptist going ahead of Jesus saying, “He’s the Son of God. He’s going to be amazing,” right? But I think you could probably go back even farther. I doubt that there was a Roman circus or gladiator event that didn’t have somebody- Stephen Semple: Oh, God. Hawk it. Dave Young: …screaming about it for weeks ahead. Stephen Semple: I’m sure. I’m sure. That’s a great observation. Dave Young: And then about the same time as this, one of my fellow Nebraskans, Buffalo Bill Cody, was putting together his Wild West Show. And it was actually P.T. Barnum that gave him the advice of taking it to Europe. Stephen Semple: Oh, is that right? Dave Young: Because a taste of the Old West will astonish Europeans. Stephen Semple: That’s really interesting. Dave Young: Right? They’ve read about it. They’ve heard about it, but now you bring these cowboys and rough riders and… Stephen Semple: But what’s really interesting about that is that speaks to his comment, about Barnum’s comment about curiosity being the most powerful emotion. Because taking a show about the Wild West at that time to Europe, of course, people are going to be curious. What’s a cowboy really look like? Dave Young: Yeah. Well, if you do that in Western Nebraska, it’s like, “Okay. Well, so it’s just a bunch of the local town folk got together and are putting on a little rodeo. We’ve seen that.” But people in Europe haven’t. Stephen Semple: And it’s funny, is it Culver’s? Culver’s. That was one of the ones- Dave Young: The hamburger place? Stephen Semple: No, not the- Dave Young: No. Stephen Semple: I’m drawing a brain on the restaurant, but it was one that did the barbecue. And remember he started- Dave Young: Huh. Stephen Semple: … in Minnesota, rather than starting a barbecue place in Texas. And part of it is it would be different and whatnot, but I also wonder if there would’ve been a little bit of curiosity in Minnesota. “Boy, I wonder what really good barbecue tastes like.” Dave Young: Sure. Stephen Semple: Right? Anyway, it’s just interesting that that parallels. But my favorite, my favorite quote of P.T. Barnum’s, and again, who knows whether this is really what he said, but it was one of the ones I came across, and I really liked it. “Without promotion, something terrible happens. Nothing.” Dave Young: Oh, wow. Yeah, nothing. Stephen Semple: Just love that. “Without promotion-“ Dave Young: Ain’t that the truth? Stephen Semple: “… something terrible happens. Nothing.” Dave Young: Mm-hmm. He’s exactly right. Stephen Semple: It’s pretty cool what he did and where his innovation was. And then again, this whole idea of creating interest and excitement ahead of the event. Dave Young: Yeah. Well, I’m glad to hear this story. Thank you for bringing the P.T. Barnum story to the Empire Builders. And that circus went on for a long time. I think it only recently closed down in the last 10, 15 years, something like that. Stephen Semple: What’s really too bad about it is one of the reasons why it was shut down was kind of a lot of things with the animals, and they just didn’t seem to be able to modernize it. So you know how we often talk about look around the world? Right in front of their noses, at the time they were shutting down, right in front of their noses was a methodology that would work, and it was Cirque du Soleil. Cirque du Soleil is just a modernized circus. Dave Young: Yeah. There’s no circus animals, but there’s- Stephen Semple: There’s performers. Dave Young: … performers and a story, a storyline weaved into the whole thing. Stephen Semple: Huge storyline. Huge storyline. And, in fact, when you go to a Cirque du Soleil, the show starts before the show starts. Dave Young: Yeah, yeah. Well, and I would say that another example of that in the constant distraction, constant entertainment is if you follow Banana Ball, Jesse Cole has built this phenomenon that, I’ve been to one and, again, the entertainment starts before the game. You can actually wander around and meet players and get… They have like a parade that they come in. It’s crazy, right? It’s like a circus parade. Stephen Semple: Fun. Dave Young: But it’s constant distraction, and it’s like a circus with a baseball game in the middle of it. Stephen Semple: Nice. Yeah. Dave Young: So lots of lessons to be learned from studying P.T. Barnum. Let me help you with an example of just how crowded it is… similar in size to Georgia, Iowa, and Alabama, but with 15 or 25x more people!s **Bangladesh is the most densely populated sovereign nation larger than 1,000 square miles** - It has a population density of roughly 3,538 per sq. mile (1400/km)! - Virtually all higher-density entries are tiny city-states, territories, or micro-nations far below 1,000 square miles, including: Macau (~33 km², ~22,000/km²), Monaco (~2 km², ~19,000/km²), Singapore (~710 km², ~8,225/km²), and Hong Kong (~1,100 km², ~7,000/km²). - Among sovereign countries (or comparable large entities) exceeding the size threshold, no other nation surpasses Bangladesh. Next in line for larger countries include places like Taiwan (~636/km²), the Netherlands (~548/km²), and South Korea (~529/km²). Before astronauts, before rockets, and decades before the space race… one man built a metal sphere, attached it to a balloon, and rode it to the edge of space. In this episode we explore the incredible story of Auguste Piccard, the Swiss physicist and explorer who pushed the limits of human exploration in two completely opposite directions: the stratosphere above Earth and the deepest trenches of the ocean. In 1931, Piccard became the first human to reach the upper stratosphere inside a pressurized gondola, witnessing the curvature of the Earth and a sky so dark it resembled space itself. But he wasn't finished. Later in life he invented the bathyscaphe, a revolutionary deep-sea vessel that would eventually allow his son to descend nearly seven miles to the bottom of the Mariana Trench. From cosmic rays and balloon flights to deep-sea exploration and the limits of human survival, Piccard's work helped shape the technology that would later lead to modern spacecraft and deep-ocean submersibles.
