This week on Everybody in the Pool, we're diving into ocean intelligence. Despite covering more than 70% of the Earth, the ocean remains one of the least understood parts of our climate system — and that knowledge gap has huge consequences for weather prediction, global commerce, and climate resilience. Our guest is Tim Janssen, co-founder and CEO of Sofar Ocean, a company building the world's largest privately deployed network of ocean sensors. Their inexpensive, solar-powered Spotter buoys collect real-time data on waves, weather, and water conditions — information that fuels better climate models, safer shipping routes, and more sustainable ocean economies. We talk about:The massive “ocean data gap” and why it hinders weather and climate forecastingHow Sofar's 2,500+ Spotter buoys are creating the largest private ocean sensor networkWayfinder, Sofar's “Google Maps for ships,” and how it saves fuel and cuts emissionsWhy more ocean intelligence is critical for industries from aquaculture to shippingPartnerships with researchers, governments, and nonprofits to democratize ocean dataThe bigger vision: turning ocean information into a foundation for climate solutionsFrom global trade to Pacific Island communities, ocean intelligence has the potential to save money, reduce emissions, and protect vulnerable coastlines. Janssen explains why data may be the most important climate solution of all.LINKS:Sofar Ocean: https://www.sofarocean.com/All episodes: https://www.everybodyinthepool.com/Subscribe to the Everybody in the Pool newsletter: https://www.mollywood.co/Become a member and get an ad-free version of the podcast: https://everybodyinthepool.supercast.com/Please subscribe and tell your friends about Everybody in the Pool! Our August break continues and we're throwing it way back to Episode 34 with Aaron Mankin. A true American hero, Aaron Menken joined Paul Rieckhoff at the Classic Car Club in New York for an incredibly powerful conversation. Having survived a catastrophic IED explosion in Iraq that left him with severe burns and countless injuries shares the story of his journey to recovery with Paul in this riveting conversation. This is about more than just survival—it's about choosing hope over despair and we're sure it will leave you feeling inspired. Aaron's injuries have meant he's had to endure over 70 surgeries to reconstruct his face and body, but he's lifting up others by turning his recovery into a mission to inspire others. He talks about the extraordinary support of Operation Mend at UCLA, a program that not only rebuilt his face but also helped restore his soul. With his trademark humor, he recalls a memorable encounter at the Playboy Mansion, where he found himself in a room with more plastic surgery than any place on Earth. It's a masterclass in turning trauma into purpose. The importance of gratitude and service, and a unique look at how you define a leader and a patriot. His powerful message is a must-listen interview with a man who has every reason to be angry but chooses to be happy and inspire others instead. And people like that are why we built this show. -WATCH video of Paul and Aaron's conversation. -Learn more about Independent Veterans of America and all of the IVA candidates.  -Join the movement. In this powerful finale of our book review series, we delve into the heart of Britt Wray's *Generation Dread: Finding Purpose in an Age of Climate Crisis* – a groundbreaking work that bridges science, psychology, and storytelling to reframe eco-anxiety as a catalyst for collective action. Drawing from global research and personal narratives, Wray reveals how climate emotions are not a sign of weakness but proof of our profound connection to life on Earth . **Key Themes Explored in This Episode:** 1. **Eco-Anxiety as Healthy Response**: Climate dread is a rational reaction to ecological breakdown, signaling empathy and moral clarity. Suppressing it fuels denial; embracing it sparks action . 2. **Global Inequity in Climate Suffering**: 45% of young people worldwide report daily dysfunction from eco-anxiety, soaring to 74% in low-income nations facing direct climate disasters . Yet, privileged communities often dominate the narrative. 3. **Parenting in a Crisis**: Wray's journey from questioning parenthood (“signing children up to witness ecological decline”) to embracing it as an act of “robust hope” mirrors a generational reckoning . 4. **Collective Coping Strategies**: From “climate cafes” to activism circles, Wray emphasizes that processing grief in community is essential for building *existential resilience* . 5. **From Doom to Purpose**: The book critiques “toxic positivity” and advocates for “active hope” – channeling despair into meaningful actions that align with justice and equity .

Miroslav Volf explores agapic love, creation's goodness, and God's grief—an alternative to despair, power, and world rejection.“When a wanted child is born, the immense joy of many parents often renders them mute, but their radiant faces speak of surprised delight: ‘Just look at you! It is so very good that you are here!' This delight precedes any judgment about the beauty, functionality, or moral rectitude of the child. The child's sheer existence, the mere fact of it, is ‘very good.' That's what I propose God, too, exclaimed, looking at the new-born world. And that unconditional love grounds creation's existence.”In this fourth Gifford Lecture, Miroslav Volf contrasts the selective and self-centered love of Ivan Karamazov with the radically inclusive, unconditional love of Father Zosima. Drawing deeply from Dostoevsky's The Brothers Karamazov, Genesis's creation and flood narratives, and Hannah Arendt's concept of amor mundi, Volf explores a theology of agapic love: unearned, universal, and enduring. This is the love by which God sees creation as “very good”—not because it is perfect, but because it exists. It's the love that grieves corruption without destroying it, that sees responsibility as mutual, and that offers the only hope for life in a deeply flawed world. With references to Luther, Nietzsche, and modern visions of power and desire, Volf challenges us to ask what kind of love makes a world, sustains it, and might one day save it. “Love the world,” he insists, “or lose your soul.”Episode Highlights“The world will either be loved with unconditional love, or it'll not be loved at all.”“Unconditional love abides. If the object of love is in a state that can be celebrated, love rejoices. If it is not, love mourns and takes time to help bring it back to itself.”“Each is responsible for all. Each is guilty for all. Each needs forgiveness from all. Each must forgive all.”“Creation is not primarily sacramental or iconic. It is an object of delight both for humans and for God.”“Agapic love demands nothing from the beloved, though it cares and hopes much for them and for the shared world with them.”Show NotesSchopenhauer and Nietzsche's visions of happiness: pleasure and power as substitutes for love“Love as hunger”: the devouring nature of epithemic desireIvan Karamazov's tragic love for life—selective, gut-level, and self-focused“There is still… this wild and perhaps indecent thirst for life in me”Father Zosima's universal love for “every leaf and every ray of God's light”“Love man also in his sin… Love all God's creation”Sonya and Raskolnikov in Crime and Punishment: love as restoration“She loved him and stayed with him—not although he murdered, but because he murdered”God's declaration in Genesis: “And look—it was very good”Hannah Arendt's amor mundi—“I want you to be” as pure affirmationCreation as gift: “Each is itself by being more than itself”Martin Luther on marriage, sex, and delight as godly pleasuresThe flood as hypothetical: divine grief replaces divine destruction“It grieved God to his heart”—grief as a form of agapic love“Each is responsible for all. This episode of The Higher Standard pulls back the curtain on the Fed's $2 trillion “magic trick” that never makes the headlines. Chris, Saied, and Rajeil break down how the overnight reverse repo facility works like a no-risk money parking garage for banks—one so massive it once held enough cash to buy every home in New York City twice. Add in a little history lesson on the Fed literally locking away gold in the 1930s to keep money out of circulation, and you've got a playbook of hidden levers that shape the economy while the average person is left scratching their head. Spoiler: it's less about Main Street and more about keeping Wall Street on life support.➡️ But this isn't just charts and jargon—expect sushi horror stories, octopus debates, Hulk Hogan controversies, and even a detour into alien tech possibly cruising toward Earth (thanks, Harvard). The crew wrestles with the big question: are these financial maneuvers protecting consumers, or just quietly bailing out the system? Either way, the laughs hit as hard as the lessons. Welcome back to the only financial literacy podcast that can connect the Fed's shadow moves to turtle mating rituals without missing a beat.

In this episode, we delve into the environmental toll of the ongoing war in Ukraine. Comparing the impacts with our multiple climate disasters, we have witnessed how environmental destruction has dramatically altered our understanding of home, place, and belonging. To trace ways in which ecological grief is echoed and reckoned with across these different contexts, EcoJustice Radio shares the Thomas Mann House presentation of a conversation between Darya Tsymbalyuk (University of Chicago) and Ursula K. Heise (UCLA). Support the Podcast via PayPal https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=LBGXTRM292TFC&source=url Tsymbalyuk's recent book, ‘Ecocide in Ukraine', highlights the devastating impact of the conflict on Ukraine's ecosystems and landscapes. From pollution and destruction of habitats to the emotional connections of locals to their environment, this episode sheds light on the often-overlooked ecological consequences of war. Drawing connections between Ukrainian experiences, the scarred lands of the Pacific Palisades, and beyond, Tsymbalyuk and Heise discuss the loss of cherished places and species to examine the role of storytelling and the cultural imaginations in ways of inhabiting the damaged Earth. Do souls have more than one incarnation, either on Earth or elsewhere? Does the Soul plan its incarnations ahead of time? Do we have "soul groups" that we incarnate with across different lifetimes? Are there contracts or agreementsbetween souls? Do spirit guides or angels assist us during a given lifetime? If so, how? What is karma? What is death? Where is Heaven? Guest host Abdulla Moaswes, a Palestinian scholar and old buddy of mine, is joined by two scholars of Kashmir, Ather Zia and Hafsa Kanjwal to talk about Kashmir. It's a long episode, but that's because we wanted to make sure to present Kashmir's history on its own terms, a Kashmir perspective that does not center Pakistan and certainly not India (or China). This is part 3 of the Kashmir Question series. The full version is available on Patreon. For much of the last 3 decades, Kashmir has been among the most militarised places on Earth, with its territory divided between the three nuclear-armed states of India, Pakistan, and China. Earlier this year, events in the region acted as a prelude to an armed confrontation between India and Pakistan, which the former used as an opportunity to more deeply entrench an emergent settler colonial form of rule in the territory. Many view the Kashmir question as simply a territorial dispute between these three states, but as this podcast series will demonstrate, the Kashmir question is one about colonial occupation and anticolonial resistance. In this podcast series, Hafsa, Ather and Abdulla first outline the origins of the Kashmir crisis, explaining how the region came to be partitioned as a result of British and Indian colonialism. They contextualise Kashmir's colonisation within the project of Indian statebuilding, as well as the territory's relevance to regional geopolitics. In part 2, they discuss Kashmiri resistance over the decades, including the events that led to and comprised the Kashmir Intifada that broke out in the late 1980s. The third and final episode consists of an assessment of Kashmir's current status and the guests' outlook for the future. Ather Zia is an associate professor in the Department of Anthropology and the Gender Studies program at the University of Northern Colorado, Greeley as well as a poet, short fiction writer, and columnist. Verse for discussion: https://vedabase.io/en/library/sb/10/1/4 So, my point was, when they (western devotees) went back to India, there was an inordinate response. People came running out. Where was it? In Gujarat? Audience:Surat. Surat, most pious place on Earth. What can you expect? But they went there, they're having a kīrtan down the road. People came running out. They were grabbing the dirt on the road where the devotees had performed kīrtan and smearing it on their bodies. And the devotees were shocked actually, like, "Hey, we're just mleccha-yavanas and whatnots," as Prabhupāda says. "And why are they doing this?" Prabhupāda said later, "Because you follow four regulative principles and chant 16 rounds." He said, "You'll be famous all over the world." And so, you know, it's not a cheap thing: 'nivṛtta-tarṣair upagīyamānād.' What do you have to do for this? Just die to the material world. Just give up everything, that's all. Just have no other interest except for Kṛṣṇa. Then you'll be fine. "Sure, no problem." But those who do that and then represent in a straightforward way what has already been presented... Prabhupāda gives a clear definition of that in the first canto, fourth chapter, first paragraph describing what it means to represent. He says, "You should not try to screw out any new meaning from what the previous ācāryas have said. Don't try to be a Muni and say, 'I have a different idea.'" Same thing, but he said, "You should adjust the language to accommodate the local people, the local vernacular, how they can understand, build context. Say it in your own language, but say the exact same thing." Prabhupāda said, "That is what is known as realization," and that's the great need. Notice that Prabhupāda uses words in his commentaries like "Superspirit," "Supersoul." Where do these things come from? Prabhupāda's realization of how to present to a world population so that they can accommodate the concepts and the language and so forth. Straightforward, but in a way that people in a context, they can understand it. Coral reefs are often called the “rainforests of the sea.” They provide habitat for an incredible diversity of marine life, protect shorelines from storms, and support the livelihoods of millions of people around the world. But reefs are also among the most threatened ecosystems on Earth. Rising ocean temperatures, pollution, and coastal development all play a role in their decline—and now, research shows that something as ordinary as the sunscreen we put on at the beach could be part of the problem.Certain chemical ingredients found commonly in sunscreens have been linked to coral bleaching, genetic damage in marine species, and even harm to the tiny phytoplankton that form the base of the ocean's food chain. Some places, including Hawai‘i, have already banned these types of sunscreens in an effort to protect fragile reef ecosystems. But with labels like “reef-safe” popping up everywhere, it's not always clear what's marketing spin and what's truly safe for our oceans. To help us untangle the science and policy behind sunscreen and reef health, we're joined by Katie Day, Surfrider Foundation's Senior Manager of Science and Policy. Katie grew up on a small island in the U.S. Virgin Islands, where her love for the ocean first began. With a Master's Degree in Environmental Science and Management, she brings expertise in climate policy, water quality, and habitat management. At Surfrider, she helps guide national campaigns with the latest science, leads federal advocacy efforts, and heads up the organization's annual Coastal Recreation Hill Day in Washington, D.C. Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/outdoor.minimalist.book/Website: https://www.theoutdoorminimalist.com/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@theoutdoorminimalistBuy Me a Coffee: https://buymeacoffee.com/outdoorminimalistListener Survey: https://forms.gle/jd8UCN2LL3AQst976-----------------Surfrider FoundationWebsite: https://www.surfrider.org/Reef-Safe Sunscreen Guide: https://www.surfrider.org/news/surfrider-foundations-2025-reef-friendly-sunscreen-guideInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/SurfriderFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/surfrider/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/surfrider-foundation/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/SurfriderFoundation

#fantastic4 #marvelcinematicuniverse #MCU Marvel's First Family finally joins the MCU! In a universe where The Avengers don't exist, The Fantastic Four - consisting of Reed Richards, his wife Sue, brother-in-law Johnny, and best friend Ben - have become the heroes of Earth 828 after a freak accident in space imbues them all with special abilities. The family is joyful when finding out that the Richards' are about to be parents, but when a powerful cosmic being threatens the safety of their planet in exchange for their (seemingly) powerful unborn child, the team must work together to find a way to save both.

This week we're beginning our series on Alien: Earth. Having watched the Alien film series in its entirety at the end of last year, we are perfectly prepared, poised like an apex predator, and above all really bloody excited to embark upon a full, week-by-week viewing of the new FX series, Alien: Earth. Alien: Earth has been created and overseen by Noah Hawley, the creator of TV shows Legion and Fargo, both of which are a careful mix of faithfulness and creativity - exactly the qualities we, over the course of many podcasts, have identified as crucial to the best IP storytelling. Join us this week to discuss the double episode opener, and then every Monday to discuss new episodes in the series. Let us know what you think of this episode by emailing us at redshirtcinemaclub@gmail.com and support us on Patreon at patreon.com/redshirtcinemaclub for access to two bonus episodes per month as well as our newsletter, The Civilian Observer. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Most vertebrate animals on land get around on all fours, but some of us have committed to two-legged locomotion. This episode, we explore the various ways animals have evolved bipedalism and the many benefits that come with it. We'll also take a look at how we identify bipedal animals in the fossil record, and we'll zoom in on the evolutionary story behind Earth history's most successful bipeds.
