The Sun is kind of a big deal. It is the center of our solar system, around which all other objects revolve, and its heat and light are responsible for the life-supporting conditions here on Earth. This episode, we take a close look at how the Sun actually works and what makes it different from other stars. Then, we track the lifetime of the Sun, exploring how it originally formed, how it has changed over its lifetime, and how it will eventually burn out. In the news: carnivorous plants, ancient burrowers, live birth, and reptile metabolism. AI is rapidly changing what it means to be human, but is AI development truly human-centered? According to Aza Raskin, co-founder of the Center for Humane Technology, the answer is largely “no.” The man who invented the “infinite scroll” is now working to understand why the most powerful technology so often fails to prioritize the human experience and our collective well-being. Raskin is also leading the Earth Species Project — using AI to better understand the animals that live alongside us, by unlocking patterns in vast amounts of data on animal communication. Beavers are well known as ecosystem engineers in North America. In Australia, lyrebirds play a big role in shaping their environment when they use their toes to dig in the ground for food. A single lyrebird can shift 11 dump truck loads of soil and leaves — each year! That's thought to be more than any other digging animal. Lyrebirds are best known for their spot-on imitations of other birds' songs and calls. Melody Wright returns to unpack a housing market collapse accelerating faster than 2008. Foreclosure referrals are spiking 150% month over month, FHA delinquencies are climbing past 12%, and multifamily real estate securitizations are showing signs of fraud, mismarked debt, and vanishing capital. Wright and Marty dig into United Wholesale Mortgage's balance sheet troubles, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac exposure, private credit stress, commercial real estate maturity walls, and why Bitcoin remains the hedge against a monetary system built on unchecked credit creation. It is midnight in Dallas on Friday, November 22, 1963, and the weekend of tragedy is bleeding into Saturday morning. Inside the limestone walls of the Dallas Police and Courts building, the air is thick with tobacco smoke, sweat, and cheap coffee as hundreds of international journalists clamor for a glimpse of the prime suspect. Fearing that prolonged silence behind closed doors will spark rumors of police brutality, police chiefs and prosecutors make the fateful decision to show Lee Harvey Oswald to the world. But as Captain Fritz attempts a brief showing in the cramped third-floor hallway, the corridor explodes into absolute bedlam, triggering a frantic press stampede down to the basement assembly room.Standing right in the center of this media storm is Jack Ruby, clad in a sharp gray suit and his signature snap-rim fedora, carrying a notepad and pencil. Bypassing every security checkpoint without credentials simply because local officers recognize him as the friendly operator of the Carousel Club, Ruby easily infiltrates the media theater known as the assembly room. But where exactly was he standing during the showing? While the Warren Commission accepted Ruby's clean narrative—supported by Detective Augustus Everhart—that he stood out of the way on a table in the back of the room, veteran police reporter John Rutledge swore under oath to a far more active presence. Rutledge testified that Ruby was down on the floor, weaving through the crowd between the second and third rows of desks, actively circulating and handing out Carousel Club business cards. When the double doors of the assembly room finally swing open, Jack Ruby and Lee Harvey Oswald stand face-to-face for the first time under the blinding, scorching television lights. We examine Ruby's chilling, immediate post-arrest impressions of the suspect to the FBI. Rather than seeing a historical or political figure, Ruby saw something visceral and disgusting, describing Oswald as a "little weasel" and a "creep," while uttering a strangely prophetic sentence: "He didn't look like he would have killed our president. Well, not all alone."But the most terrifying revelation of this midnight press showing lies in Jack's front pocket. As he stood mere feet away from the handcuffed suspect, Jack Ruby was carrying his loaded, nickel-plated .38 caliber Colt Cobra revolver. We dissect the heavy questions that still hang over this historic encounter: Was  Ruby's eventual shooting of Oswald  born of spontaneous, hysterical grief? Was he premeditated and if so, then why did he stand armed in that basement on Friday night and do nothing? We challenge the official, emotionally convenient narrative of a grieving citizen, exploring whether this Friday night infiltration was a calculated rehearsal—a dry run to test the building's security and see just how close a friendly local club owner could get to the most heavily guarded prisoner on Earth.

More than half a century after humans last walked on the Moon, the next era of space exploration is taking shape. Getting there is cheaper, private companies are playing a much bigger role, and discoveries like vast reserves of lunar water have made the prospect of establishing a permanent presence on the Moon far more realistic. Ian Bremmer sits down with Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield to talk about what this new space age could look like. They discuss the growing competition between the US and China, whether rivals can cooperate on the lunar surface, and who gets to write the rules as governments and companies begin looking beyond simply planting a flag. Hadfield also breaks down the practical challenges of living on the Moon – from powering a settlement through long lunar nights to the unanswered question of whether humans can develop normally in low gravity. He explains how private companies are turning space into a commercial marketplace, why regulation will inevitably struggle to keep pace, and why robots alone can never satisfy humanity's drive to explore Mars. And drawing on nearly six months aboard the International Space Station, Hadfield reflects on the surprisingly wonderful experience of sleeping in zero gravity, circling Earth 2,600 times, and how seeing the planet from above fundamentally changed his perspective on humanity and our place in the universe. When Jesus tells a story, you listen. When Jesus repeats 3 stories with the same meaning, you REALLY listen. Every story he told during his time here on Earth was of important purpose, but to repeat the same lesson 3 times in 3 ways tells us Jesus desperately wants us to get this message. Today’s parable is part of that trilogy teaching. The Lost Sheep, The Lost Coin and the Lost Son. The teaching of the Lost Sheep was recorded by both Matthew and Luke, so we already looked at that teaching earlier in our series. But now as we look at the accounts of Luke, we see the remaining 2 stories taught back to back by Jesus to the same crowd of people. Who were these people in the crowd, and why would they so desperately need to understand this message? This was a mixed crowd of religious leaders, along with as Luke puts it, “tax collectors and other notorious sinners”. These were people who didn’t mix. Religious leaders of this day made very clear distinctions between who was considered acceptable and who was not—who was “clean” and who was “unclean.” And the people Jesus was attracting—the tax collectors and notorious sinners—were the very people the religious crowd believed should be kept at a distance. They didn’t mix. But as Jesus taught this trilogy of stories about the lost, the sinners came crowding in. The people who had been pushed to the edges were now pressing into the center—right there at the feet of Jesus. Why were the unclean and the sinners coming in? Because for the first time, they were being told they belonged, they mattered, and there was a path for them to be made clean. Up until then, as part of the unclean, they had been pushed to the edges. They were the people you avoided, the people you didn’t touch, the people you didn’t invite to your table. They couldn’t simply blend in with everyone else. Their reputation went ahead of them. Their past followed them. Their failures had become their identity. Imagine that for a moment. Or maybe you don’t have to imagine too hard because this is a story you continually tell yourself now. You don’t belong. You’re unworthy. No body wants you. You’ve felt like part of the “unclean”. For these people being constantly told that they’re not good enough, not acceptable, not clean, eventually they started believing it themselves. Maybe they had assumed God was only for the clean people. The religious people. And then Jesus came. And Jesus changed everything. Jesus didn’t stand on the other side of the crowd pointing at them. He moved toward them. He welcomed them. He ate with them. He touched the untouchable. He talked to the unacceptable. He gave dignity to people who had been reduced to their sin. And suddenly, these people who had been told, “You don’t belong here,” were crowding around Jesus because Jesus was telling them something completely different: You matter. You are wanted. You are worth finding. You are not too far gone. That is the setting for these three stories. And that is why Jesus tells them three times, in three different ways: God goes after what is lost. He tells the story of a shepherd who leaves the ninety-nine to find one lost sheep. Then a woman who turns her house upside down to find one lost coin. And finally, a father who watches the road, waiting for his lost son to come home. Three stories. One message. God is not standing far away waiting for the lost to find their way back to Him. God is actively pursuing them. And Jesus wants these religious leaders—and every outcast listening at His feet—to understand something that would have been almost scandalous to them: The lost are not an inconvenience to God. They are His pursuit. The very people everyone else had pushed away were the people Jesus was drawing near to. What was literally happening in this moment was James 4:8, “Come close to God, and God will come close to you.” The unclean were drawing in close for the first time believing maybe this man Jesus was sharing the Good News with them, and as they came in close, God came in close to them. A message worth repeating 3 times! So today, we look specifically at “The Parable of The Lost Coin”. The short little story tucked in between the other 2 more popular stories of something that had been lost. Luke 15: 8-10 “Suppose a woman has 10 sliver coins and loses one. Won’t she light a lamp and sweep the entire house and search carefully until she finds it? And when she finds it, she will call in her friends and neighbors and say, ‘Rejoice with me because I have found my lot coin.’ In the same way, there is joy in the presence of God’s angels when even one sinner repents.'” And here in the crowd were the sinners who were told they were unclean and unworthy of anything from God. They were written off and excluded. Now, Jesus is telling them, YOU ARE LIKE A LOST COIN THAT IS WORTHY OF BEING SEARCHED FOR! What does a coin have to do to be found? Absolutely nothing! The coin doesn’t crawl its way out of the corner. The coin doesn’t shine itself up to be found. No, the owner comes looking and will not quit until it is found! Notice what the woman does when she loses the coin – She specifically lights a lamp and sweeps the entire house in a careful search. This is precisely what God does when he comes looking for one of his lost children. One who has gotten lost in the darkness, swept to the side, fallen in the cracks and been left alone. First, HE SHINES THE LIGHT. What is this light? John 1:4-5, “In HIM was life, and that life was the LIGHT of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” But, the light doesn’t stop with God. Through Jesus, we become his light bearers. Matthew 5:14, Jesus says, “YOU are the light of the world.” Girls, this means for those of us with the Holy Spirit dwelling within us, we carry the light that God uses to search for his lost coins. WE ARE PART OF THE SEARCH AND RESCUE TEAM FOR LOST SOULS!!!!!! Are they unclean? Are they not to be touched? Are they to be avoided? NOT ACCORDING TO JESUS!!!!!!!!!! THEY ARE TO BE SEARCHED FOR! Jesus says with this light, the woman sweeps the entire house in careful search. GOD IS WILLING TO GO ANYWHERE AND EVERYWHERE LOOKING FOR A LOST SOUL. He will move the furniture. He will lift the rug. He’ll turn the sofa upside down. He’s not quitting the search for what is his. Here in the crowd, lost souls are hearing Jesus say that he will not stop caring about them. And here today, those within the sound of my voice are hearing Jesus still saying the same thing – HE WILL NOT STOP CARING ABOUT YOU. No matter where you’ve been hiding – no matter what darkness you’ve been stuck in – no matter how dirty you’ve become – HE WANTS YOU BACK!!!!!!!! You are his daughter. You belong to him. Nothing changes that. Just because the coin was lost didn’t mean the woman no longer claimed it. No, she said, “MY COIN”. It was hers when she held it, hers when it was lost, and hers when she found it. “I have found MY lost coin.” You’ve always been God’s girl. That’s not changing. Let yourself be found! Do you know what will happen when he finds you? A FULL BLOWN CELEBRATION!!!!!!!!! Literally Jesus says “There is joy in the presence of God’s angels when even one sinner repents.” The angels are throwing a party over every soul who is pulled up out of the darkness. Over every soul who is picked up and dusted off. Over every soul who is restored to the place where they belong. THERE IS JOY WHEN THE LOST IS FOUND! Not disappointment. Not condemnation. Not, “Well, look who finally came crawling back.” JOY! Jesus is painting a picture for these sinners sitting at His feet—and for the religious leaders standing there judging them—that would have been impossible to miss. THIS is how God feels about sinners coming home. And I think sometimes we forget that. We know how to feel guilty. We know how to beat ourselves up. We know how to replay our failures and remind ourselves of every place we’ve fallen short. We know how to tell ourselves that we should have known better, done better, been better. But Jesus tells a different story. He tells us that when we are lost, God searches. When we are in the darkness, God brings the light. When we are buried under the mess of our own making, God starts moving things around to find us. And when He finds us, He celebrates. Girl, let that sink in. God isn’t looking for a reason to reject you. He’s looking for you. You may have wandered. You may have messed up. You may have made choices you wish you could undo. You may feel like you’ve fallen so far into the cracks that nobody could possibly find you. But you are not forgotten. You are not disqualified. You are not too dirty. You are not too far gone. You are still His. The coin didn’t become worthless because it was lost. Its location changed. Its condition may have gotten dirty. It may have been sitting in a dark corner where nobody could see it. But its value never changed. And neither has yours. Let Jesus find you exactly where you are. Because He already knows where you are. He’s already looking. He’s already searching. And when He finds you, He’s not going to pick you up and say, “What a mess you are.” He’s going to say, “There you are. I’ve been looking for you.” And heaven will rejoice. If you’ve believed the lie that you’re unworthy, let Jesus tell you the truth. You are His. You have always mattered. You have never been too far away for His light to reach. And you are worth finding. Because that’s the message Jesus repeated three times so we would never forget it: The lost matter to God. The lost are worth pursuing. And when the lost are found, HEAVEN REJOICES. So, Sis, let yourself be found. Sheck Exley didn't just push the limits of human exploration—he redefined them. Today we dive into the life of the man widely regarded as the greatest cave diver who ever lived. From his first cave dive at age 16 to his record-breaking descent past 800 feet into Mexico's El Zacatón, Exley spent three decades exploring the most dangerous underwater caves on Earth. Along the way, he developed the techniques, equipment, and safety protocols that made modern technical diving possible. But his obsession with the depths would ultimately cost him everything. On April 6, 1994, Exley attempted to reach the bottom of the world's deepest underwater sinkhole—a dive from which he would never return. Misha Glenny delves in to the In Our Time archive to select ten episodes for listeners to revisit. His fourth choice, first released in January 2008, explores how the science of plate tectonics revolutionised our understanding of the planet on which we live. America is getting further away from Europe. This is not a political statement but a geological fact. Just as the Pacific is getting smaller, the Red Sea bigger, the Himalayas are still going up and one day the Horn of Africa will be a large island. This is the theory of plate tectonics, a revolutionary idea in 20th century geology that claimed the continents of Earth were dancing to the music of deep time. A dance of incredible slowness, yet powerful enough to throw up the mountains and pour away the oceans. Plate tectonics, the idea that the earth's surface moved on a carpet of molten magma, constituted a genuine scientific revolution in geology. It explained why mountains appeared and why earthquakes occurred; it explained the curious distribution of fossils across the globe and finally solved the age old conundrum of why continents such as Africa and South America appeared to fit together like a giant jigsaw puzzle. Plate tectonics has made geologists, and many more besides, profoundly re-think what the Earth was, how it worked and how it related to all the things in it. If aliens landed on Earth tomorrow, would humanity unite to welcome our new extraterrestrial neighbors… or would we immediately start arguing about who owns the spaceship? You already know the answer. This episode of The Rizzuto Show begins with a perfectly reasonable hypothetical: UFOs have landed and aliens are officially confirmed to be on Earth. How are you feeling? Curious? Terrified? Mostly annoyed that the 24-hour news cycle will somehow make it the third-biggest story of the afternoon? The crew dives into UFOs becoming UAPs, government disclosures, Bob Lazar, Area 51 and whether actual extraterrestrial visitors could finally unite humanity. Rafe thinks having one common alien enemy might finally turn us all into citizens of Earth. Moon isn't buying that optimism and figures we'd probably start fighting over which country gets custody of the aliens before they even get out of the ship. Sounds about right.Back on Earth, St. Louis is getting a little Hollywood treatment with The Streak, a sports comedy filming locally about Caltech's legendary basketball team snapping a 310-game losing streak. The production needs roughly 1,800 volunteer extras for basketball crowd scenes, meaning you too can spend five hours waiting around for your glorious half-second of blurry cinematic immortality. At least they're bringing stand-up comedians in to entertain the extras between takes. Then we enter conspiracy territory with Tropical Storm Dolly. Yes, shortly after Dolly Parton's passing, the next named Atlantic storm happens to be Dolly. No, they didn't name it after her. Yes, the names were already determined. And yes, people online are still turning it into a conspiracy because apparently coincidence was removed from the Internet's vocabulary sometime around 2017. It's the kind of discussion a comedy podcast was genetically engineered to handle. The show also remembers the incredible Tim Curry, looking back at everything from The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Clue to Home Alone 2, Congo and his nightmare-fueling performance as Pennywise in the 1990 TV adaptation of It. Somehow that horrifying sewer scene aired on network television and an entire generation of children was simply expected to sleep afterward. The '90s were built different.Crap on Celebrities brings even more chaos: the Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni legal saga, Jamie Foxx discussing changes made to Django Unchained, a Quentin Tarantino-written Cliff Booth project, the original Sandlot cast reuniting for Dugout Dads, and the revelation that Benny “The Jet” Rodriguez grew up to become a firefighter. There is also a detour into a bizarre 2015 incident involving actor Mike Vitar because apparently even The Sandlot can't survive this show without us finding something weird.Ozzy Osbourne is getting his own Halloween Horror Nights attraction, Boston is celebrating 50 years with previously unreleased demos, Eric Clapton and John Mayer have a limited-edition guitar collection benefiting Clapton's recovery center, and Rupert Grint is returning as an adult Ron Weasley on Broadway. It's celebrity news, music news and pop culture commentary delivered with the level of professionalism you've come to expect from people debating alien treaties earlier in the episode. But then comes the real scientific research:Who has the most aura?According to an online ranking of effortless presence, charisma and coolness, Keanu Reeves sits at number one.Number two?Jesus. That's correct. According to the Internet, Keanu Reeves has officially edged out Jesus in aura.John Cena, Willem Dafoe, Christian Bale, Tupac, Robert Downey Jr., Matthew McConaughey, Michael Jackson, Jim Carrey, The Rock and Henry Cavill also make appearances as the crew debates who actually deserves to rank among humanity's most effortlessly cool people. Michael Jackson at number eleven? Rafe has questions. And frankly, so should you. Finally, the crew returns to Dolly Parton's remarkable legacy and the mountain of projects she left behind, including products, productions and even a song intended for release around her 100th birthday. Meaning Dolly apparently planned her content calendar farther into the future than most of us have planned lunch.Aliens. UFO conspiracies. Tim Curry. Dolly Parton. Hollywood. Ozzy. The Sandlot. The Rizzuto Show kicks things off by remembering Tim Curry, his legendary career, and the unfortunate timing of losing another beloved celebrity during an already emotional week. That leads the crew into the important question of who could possibly fill the role of a universally beloved celebrity these days. Adam Sandler gets consideration, Jeff Bridges enters the conversation, and eventually Keanu Reeves emerges as a pretty strong candidate because apparently quietly eating ice cream and being a decent human being now qualifies you for sainthood. Fair enough. Then everybody gets nostalgic about childhood discipline, which quickly becomes less “remember the good old days?” and more “should somebody have called somebody?” The crew remembers wooden spoons, belts, Hot Wheels tracks, fly swatters, soap in the mouth and the terrifying parental phrase that basically meant your afternoon plans had been canceled. It's another wholesome trip down memory lane from your favorite funny podcast, assuming your memories involve calculating the trajectory of a leather belt like you're working for NASA.Next stop: Burning Man, where the crew investigates the return of the infamous adults-only dome after last year's wind-related disaster. There are rules now: IDs, consent, no recording devices and, most importantly, no singles strolling in alone. Which naturally launches a completely necessary discussion about whether two buddies could simply pretend to be a couple to get through the door. Journalism is alive and well.Things somehow become more respectable when we arrive in Tulsa, where authorities are searching for a mysterious serial defecator accused of targeting businesses while dressed in an ensemble involving tiny underwear, a shower cap, a modified mask and Crocs. The most damning detail? The Crocs apparently weren't in sport mode. That's how you know this guy fears neither God nor law enforcement. And then comes Oreogate.A kindergarten mom reportedly asks the other parents to stop packing Oreos because her daughter gets upset when other kids have them. No allergy. No medical issue. Just the brutal realization that another five-year-old has cookies and you do not. When the other parents refuse to reorganize their children's lunches around this international crisis, Mom considers switching schools.Over Oreos.Meanwhile, the kid starts trading for them anyway, proving once again that kindergarten cafeterias are basically tiny prisons with better wall art. The crew debates school-lunch currency, Double Stuf superiority, Golden Oreos, questionable specialty flavors and the economic insanity required to consider changing schools because Nabisco has destroyed the peace. There are even pickle-flavored Oreo-adjacent horrors entering the studio, because apparently talking about terrible cookies wasn't enough—we needed witnesses. It's celebrity talk, childhood trauma disguised as nostalgia, weird news, Burning Man logistics, criminal fashion analysis and one kindergarten snack dispute treated with roughly the seriousness of an international trade embargo. The crew dives into UFOs becoming UAPs, government disclosures, Bob Lazar, Area 51 and whether actual extraterrestrial visitors could finally unite humanity. Rafe thinks having one common alien enemy might finally turn us all into citizens of Earth. It's celebrity news, music news and pop culture commentary delivered with the level of professionalism you've come to expect from people debating alien treaties earlier in the episode. Before social media algorithms knew everything about you, the internet was a simpler place. A lawless, dial-up wasteland where your email address was probably something like BongRipper69@hotmail.com and one accidental click on Rotten.com could permanently alter the trajectory of your childhood. So naturally, The Rizzuto Show is going back. This episode starts with more nostalgia for the early internet and one of its most infamous destinations: Rotten.com. Back then, you couldn't just stumble across every horrifying thing imaginable while casually scrolling your phone. No, sir. You had to work for your trauma. You had to hear about Rotten.com from somebody, type it into the family computer, click something you absolutely shouldn't have clicked, and then wait patiently while your dial-up connection loaded your lifelong regret one horrifying line at a time. Was Rotten.com disgusting? Absolutely.Does the crew still seem weirdly sad that it's gone? Also absolutely. Then we move from internet trauma to another relic of the '90s and early 2000s: Hotmail.A poll says 18% of people are apparently still rocking a Hotmail address, which leads to an important discovery: Hotmail never completely disappeared. Microsoft eventually transitioned the service into Outlook, meaning technically some of us may still be living inside the Hotmail universe. We're all dorks. Fantastic. The crew remembers the era when nobody used their actual name for an email address. Instead, we created identities that looked like rejected Xbox gamertags: random nicknames, 420s, 69s and enough questionable innuendo to make applying for a respectable adult job years later slightly complicated. And then there are the complaint emails.Follow The Rizzuto Show → linktr.ee/rizzshow for more from your favorite daily comedy show.Connect with The Rizzuto Show Comedy Podcast online → 1057thepoint.com/RizzShow.Hear The Rizz Show daily on the radio at 105.7 The Point | Hubbard Radio in St. Louis, MO.Tulsa cops hunting ‘serial defecator' wearing thong, mask and shower cap who terrorized local businessesBride and groom bedridden for days after norovirus-tainted wedding mealTim Curry, Famous for Roles in Rocky Horror Picture Show, It and Annie, Dies at 80, 14 Years After Paralyzing StrokeDozens of new Missouri laws take effect FridayMan, 26, arrested after dressing as ‘Grim Reaper' and climbing onto hospital roof with long scythe to stare at patientsWhy You Shouldn't Squish Ants—and What to Do InsteadMaryville University Hockey Rink expansion to be named after Blues legendSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Decades of zero Western refinery expansion, alongside Ukrainian drone strikes disabling Russian capacity, has left a global deficit of 5.6 to 6 million barrels per day of refined products. This is especially severe for diesel, which requires heavy crude unlike the light sweet crude produced by the US shale revolution. With U.S. refineries running at maximum capacity, the threat of mechanical failures risks a full-blown supply crisis. (1)Richard Reinsch discusses the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and their principles, which advocate for economic collectivism, nationalizing private industries, and dismantling the U.S. constitutional republic in favor of a unicameral legislature. Reinsch contrasts this with a historical 1922 Kremlin conversation where Soviet leader Joseph Stalin accused American communist Jay Lovestone of "heresy" for arguing "American exceptionalism"—the idea that American working-class prosperity made them resistant to Marxism. Today, Reinsch views the DSA as an overeducated, white, urban phenomenon failing to win working-class or minority voters. (2)Rogier Windhorst and David Livingston: Professor Windhorst warns that the Hubble Space Telescope's orbit will begin to decay uncontrollably by September 2033 due to solar maximum atmospheric expansion. To prevent a hazardous, uncontrolled re-entry, Windhorst advocates for a robotic servicing mission to boost Hubble's orbit. As the only remaining telescope with precise blue-ultraviolet capabilities, Hubble's data remains critical and heavily in demand. Windhorst urges NASA to fund a $100 million rescue mission and eventually construct the Habitable Worlds Observatory to search for Earth-like exoplanets starting in 2040. (3)David Hebert discusses the fiscal debates surrounding Social Security's impending 2032 shortfall. Hebert refutes the idea that raising tax rates increases treasury revenue, noting that tax revenue historically remains constant at 17–18% of GDP because high rates prompt tax avoidance. Instead of "starving the beast" of resources, Hebert advocates for "starving the beast of responsibility" by decentralizing programs through federalism to cut administrative costs. He urges structural reforms to Social Security, highlighting that the ratio of workers supporting each retiree has plummeted from 40-to-1 down to 2-to-1. (4)Captain James Fanell (US Navy, retired), co-host Gordon Chang: Fanell warns that China is nearing completion of a military installation on Triton Island in the Paracels, expanding its "ring of control" in the South China Sea. He cautions that China may soon fortify Scarborough Shoal, threatening to block the northern South China Sea and degrade U.S. naval operations. In response to this rising coercion, the Philippines is boosting its 2027 defense budget by 6.3%, allocating $800 million for modernization with a heavy focus on intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance drones. Fanell urges more assertive naval cooperation to deter further Chinese expansion. (5)Dean Cheng, co-host Gordon Chang: Cheng analyzes China's space program and its pursuit of reusable booster technology to match SpaceX's cost-saving launch cadences. Although China has successfully recaptured first-stage boosters, it has not yet demonstrated refurbishing or reusing them. Cheng notes that China seeks space dominance to deploy six mega-constellations and establish moon colonies. He suggests that a delay in China's lunar south pole probe—officially blamed on solar exposure—is likely due to the ongoing accident investigation of the Long March 7 rocket failure. Cheng predicts a Chinese astronaut will walk on the moon by December 31, 2030. (6)Charles Burton, co-host Gordon Chang: Burton discusses the escalating trade war between Canada and the Trumpadministration, which triggered $20 billion in Canadian retaliatory tariffs and a 7.5 billion CAD business support package. The dispute has sparked public anti-Trump sentiment and personal mudslinging between Donald Trump and Ontario Premier Doug Ford. Stalled negotiations, compounded by unacceptable U.S. demands regarding French labeling laws, have shattered bilateral trust. Burton warns that Canada is prepared to pivot away from MAGA toward free trade with Europe and China, despite severe risks of Chinese economic coercion. (7)Jack Burnham outlines China's persistent military coercion campaign targeting Taiwan, noting that Beijing separates economic trade truces from its aggressive goal to subjugate the island. China's provocations, including Coast Guardpatrols east of Taiwan and flights over the median line, are designed to establish a "new normal." In December 2025, China responded to an $11 billion U.S. arms package by launching "Justice Mission 2025," an expansive military exercise simulating blockades and practicing "all-dimensional deterrence" to discourage U.S. intervention and test regional capabilities. (8)Doug Messier details SpaceX's plans to build "Starbase Louisiana," a massive $100 billion, 125,000-acre spaceport designed as the world's largest launch facility. Scheduled for construction in 2027 and launches by 2029, the facility will feature ten launch pads supporting thousands of annual, airline-style Starship flights. While bringing thousands of jobs, the coastal development raises environmental concerns regarding wetland habitats, which SpaceX has pledged to help restore. Messier also highlights Space Force's startup funding arm, SpaceWERX, which is fostering new aerospace innovators like Antares Nuclear and Muon Space. (9)Jeremy Zakis reports on the unprecedented rainfall sweeping across Australia, driven by a super El Niño cycle interacting with the Indian Ocean Dipole. South Australia and Adelaide experienced the heaviest downpours, breaking monthly rainfall records in a single day, while Sydney's infrastructure coped with several inches of rain. Victoria and Melbourne were largely spared due to the Great Dividing Range acting as a barrier. Zakis warns that weekly spring rains are highly unusual and threaten to fuel rapid forest undergrowth, which could dry out and create a dangerous bushfire hazard during future droughts. (10)

Welcome back to the Following Films Podcast. On today's episode, I'm talking with VFX supervisors Paul Lambert and Mag Sarnowska about their work on Project Hail Mary. The film just hit home video, so you can pick it up right now on 4K Blu-ray, DVD, or digital. Honestly, it's easily one of the best movies to come out all year, so if you haven't seen it yet, you need to change that. For those unfamiliar, the movie follows Ryland Grace, a middle school science teacher who wakes up alone on a spaceship with zero memory of who he is or how he got there. As his memory slowly comes back, he realizes he's humanity's last hope to stop an extinction-level threat that's consuming the sun. He has to rely on pure science, trial and error, and an unexpected partnership with an alien engineer named Rocky to figure out a way to save Earth. What makes the film work so well—and why talking to Paul and Mag was so great—is how it grounds all this massive visual scale in practical problem-solving and a genuinely compelling friendship. Before we get into that conversation, today's episode is sponsored by Universal Pictures and their new release, Disclosure Day. That one is also out now on 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD. The movie drops you right into the fallout of humanity discovering we aren't alone, focusing less on grand sci-fi spectacle and more on the chaotic, paranoid scramble of government cover-ups, media frenzy, and how ordinary people handle the rug being pulled out from under reality. The team over at Universal sent over a copy of Disclosure Day on 4K Blu-ray for me to give away to one lucky listener. If you want to win it, just send an email over to editor@followingfilms.com. Make sure you include your full mailing address in the email so I actually know where to ship the disc if your name gets pulled. Also, a quick heads-up for anyone in Arizona. I'll be out at Tucson Comic Con over Labor Day weekend, running from September 4th through September 6th. I'm hosting 13 different panels across the weekend, so if you're planning on attending, check out the schedule, come hang out, and say hello. If you enjoy what we're doing here, take a quick second to leave us a review on whatever app you're listening on, hit that subscribe button, and send this episode to a friend who loves movies. Now, let's jump into my chat with Paul Lambert and Mag Sarnowska.

Sometimes, modern life can feel like an endless cacophony of distractions. We spend our days being inundated with noise and traffic, news and emails, obligations and hectic schedules. Many of us long to escape to nature or the wilderness — someplace simpler, quieter — where we can find peace and reconnect with what's really important. But can we ever truly get away? We tend to think of the wilderness as land that's untouched by human hands — vast, and pristine. But the more you seek out that version of nature, the blurrier the idea seems to become. Even the most remote landscapes on Earth carry traces of human history and human borders. And preserving the wilderness, and having access to it, also means managing it. On this episode, the paradox of the wilderness — how we try to protect and control the wild.  We talk with writer Cal Flyn about the myth of untouched nature, and what drives us to experience it. She talks about how our views of the wilderness have changed over time, from fearsome and untamed lands to places of spiritual escape; what she discovered about the human histories of supposedly wild spaces; and what the paradox presented by our desire to both preserve and interact with nature means for how we think of the wild. Flyn's new book is “The Savage Landscape: How We Made the Wilderness.” It started with a tip received by a dutiful New Hampshire Fish and Game warden — and quickly turned into a twisted tale of illegal baiting and hunting, one-upmanship, digital trophy rooms, and one of the biggest poaching cases in recent state history. New Hampshire Public Radio reporter Nate Hegyi tells the story in the podcast “Operation Night Cat.” We'll hear an excerpt and talk to Hegyi about the case.

A season comes to an end today. It has nothing to do with falling leaves, changing weather, or even big-time sports. Instead, it’s a season of eclipses. It didn’t last long – it started on August 12th, with a total solar eclipse, and it ends tonight, with a partial lunar eclipse. The Moon will be almost completely immersed in Earth’s long shadow, so it’ll turn dark. And at least part of the eclipse will be visible across almost all of North America. An eclipse season is governed by the way in which the Sun and Moon align. Most months, the geometry isn’t right – the Moon and Sun don’t line up the right way, so there are no eclipses at all. But every 173 days, they come into the proper alignment. That produces a solar eclipse at new Moon, and a lunar eclipse at full Moon. They can come in either order, a fortnight apart. And a season lasts for about five weeks – a few days longer than the Moon’s cycle of phases. So if there’s an eclipse near the start of the season, it produces three eclipses. This time, the solar eclipse came a few days after the season began, so we’re limited to two eclipses – including tonight’s. The Moon first dips into Earth’s dark inner shadow at 9:34 p.m. Central Time. The eclipse peaks at 11:13, when the shadow covers 96 percent of the lunar disk. It ends an hour and a half later. In this session, Robyn and Colleen Benelli explore how working with animal energy guides us into deep belonging, human acceptance, and community reciprocity. Learn how to shift your perspective from dominion over to communion with and create meaningful solutions from a foundation of love. Join the animals in the circle of life. Key Insights: Healing Human Separation: Animal Reiki is not merely about sending energy to pets; it is a profound mirror that heals our learned cultural isolation from the Earth, restoring our awareness that humans are an equal part of the ecosystem. Belonging in Human Form: Many spiritual practitioners, starseeds, and intuitives find it easy to love nature but struggle to accept humanity. Real healing happens when we extend compassion to our own human nature, physical bodies, and local communities. The Reciprocity of Creation: The circle of life has no hierarchy, no top and no bottom. Moving from the illusion of dominion over into mutual exchange allows us to solve problems from a new level of consciousness rooted in love. Honoring Natural Rhythms: Just as animals choose proximity or distance based on their present needs, we must honor our boundaries without guilt, asking Reiki to bridge the gap when we feel out of alignment.   People Also Ask (FAQ) What can Animal Reiki teach us about human belonging? Animal Reiki reveals that humans are inherently part of the natural ecosystem rather than separate observers. By attuning to animal and plant frequencies, we release collective judgment and remember our place of mutual reciprocity within the circle of life. How does Reiki help heal feelings of spiritual disconnection? Reiki bridges the gap between your divine spiritual consciousness and your earthly human experience. It dissolves subconscious barriers of isolation, enabling you to embrace your physical humanness while remaining grounded in higher frequencies. Why is reciprocity important in energy healing with nature? True energy healing operates as a continuous giving and receiving exchange. When we honor the unique contributions of plants, animals, and human communities, we co-create solutions from love and balance rather than control or scarcity. Wondering about the lunar eclipse meaning as it relates to the August full moon in Pisces? Late night on August 27 and into the wee hours of August 28, we had a full moon and a deep lunar eclipse. If you’ve been hearing that this is intense or life-changing, relax. Here’s what’s actually happening in the sky and how to use this moment in a calm, practical way without drama or dire predictions. What Happened in the Sky The lunar eclipse and the full moon are just one event, happening within a couple of hours of each other. It’s called a deep eclipse, although still a partial one, because the Earth’s shadow covered about 96% of the Moon. Not quite total, but close. While this is visually striking, there’s no impending disaster or chaos. You are OK. You don’t need to do anything special for the event, but it’s a useful time to pause, take stock, and make one clear choice that supports your well-being. Full Moon in Pisces This full moon is in Pisces, a sign linked with feelings, imagination, your spiritual life, rest, and intuition. A full moon is traditionally a time to reflect with the aid of that bright moonlight. Take time to notice your current results and make decisions about where you might need to tweak things to improve your outcomes. This is a great time to have compassion for yourself. Take care of your own needs rather than just serving others, and let go of what no longer serves you. Pay attention to any repeated gut feelings or intuitive messages, then check the facts before you dive in and take action. This is especially for any big decisions. If you’re feeling more emotional or tired, eclipses can do that. Honor your feelings. So, if you’re tired, rest. Identify your feelings and work through them. Talk to someone supportive or address your concern as calmly as you can. This is also a time to surrender and admit that you can’t control everything. Loosen the grip and accept what is. Or you make a plan to work toward a goal and do your best without getting worked up about every step along the way. Think about any behaviors you could tweak. If you’re prone to people-pleasing or procrastinating, this is a great time to work on either one. Maybe you’re avoiding a conversation, or you need to work on your financial goals. Now is the time to be honest with yourself and take one strategic action step or simply ask yourself where you need greater clarity in your life right now. Shortcomings of Modern Day Astrology Astrology is meant to give you a snapshot of your life using your birth, or natal, chart. With your chart done, you can see how an astrological event impacts different aspects of your life and where your opportunities look the brightest. It was never meant to be a constant emergency warning system. Today’s modern astrology leans toward psychological or pop astrology, and considered to be a self-help tool. That’s why planetary movements get translated into the similar language. It’s so repetitive. Every event is a time for self-reflection, strengthening boundaries, releasing, and personal growth. That’s  why the celestial messages sound so generic, because they are written to appeal to everyone.  Back in the day, astrology offered monthly horoscopes which were still sort of general but at least were tailored to your sun sign. Each conjunction or alignment doesn’t impact everybody the same way. Fear, urgency, and anger attract attention and get shared, which is why astrology related headlines often sound so dire. many practitioners resort to catastrophic headlines like, “this eclipse will change everything.” The way I look at this, don’t we already have enough to worry about without piling on a dramatic or ominous astrological events every month. This just adds more negativity to an already overloaded nervous system. A planetary alignment is not an emergency alert. An eclipse is not proof that your life is about to fall apart. If astrology leaves you feeling uneasy, powerless, or convinced disaster is unavoidable, take a step back. That’s not astrological wisdom, it’s factually more like fear-mongering marketing. Many use dire language  simply to get your attention and make you click. The Hoax of Barbault’s Basket First, let me explain who André Barbault was. A French astrologer, he first identified the four planets aligning in this basket shape back in 1955. He studied how this configuration corresponded to specific turning points in history. The most recent “Barbault’s Basket,” just happened on July 15–24, 2026. Many writers pointed this being a dramatic time for a new world order and that created a lot of catastrophic headlines. Guess what I learned after reading several, very long astrological discussions about the Basket? Nothing! That’s right, these long articles never drew a conclusion about what it actually meant. I also did an international review of the news for that July period and NOTHING big happened in the news. Some things escalated but those events had begun earlier. It was just a lot of hype and no substance. Red Flags of Fear-Based Astrology When a video or post says a transit will definitely cause a breakup, financial loss, illness, or catastrophe, there’s no need to continue engaging with it. The same is true for content that insists you must do something or offers the same alarming prediction for everyone. If it leaves you feeling panicky, that’s a red flag. A responsible astrologer says, “this may be a demanding period,” then explain what area might need extra attention. That’s very different from “disaster is coming.” If a post makes you feel scared or helpless, turn away and return to the facts of your life. Think about what’s actually happening and one sensible action you can take to improve your situation. Practical Actions for this Eclipse Choose one action from this list of simple steps to take after the eclipse: Cancel, shorten, or delegate one unnecessary obligation. Make one appointment you’ve been avoiding, whether medical, financial, or emotional support. Send one clear message: “I can’t do that this week,” “I need time to think about that.” Limit draining activity like social media, news consumption, or responding instantly to texts. Schedule one replenishing activity for the week. Take a walk, a bath, listen to music, call a friend, or go to bed early. The stars and planets can invite you to pause and look inward, but don’t let them run your life. Keep your feet on the ground, use your own good judgment, and let astrology help you ask better questions rather than add to your stress. Right now, everything is OK, and when you focus on what’s good, take care of your needs, and find ways to enjoy life, you’ll land on your feet. So What Does This Eclipse Actually Mean? This was one combined event. A deep partial lunar eclipse (about 96% coverage) and a full moon in Pisces rather than two separate happenings. Pisces themes for this full moon is about feelings, intuition, dreams, compassion, and creativity. No special ritual is required. This is just a good excuse to pause and make one clear choice that supports your well-being. Feel your feelings first, then check the facts before acting, especially on big decisions. Watch for fear-based astrology online. If you encounter any absolute predictions, doom language, and content that leaves you feeling powerless, feel free to click away. Jon Herold and Burning Bright open with the escalating US Canada trade dispute, breaking down a clip from US Trade Representative Jameson Greer disputing the media narrative around a last minute tariff postponement gone sideways. There's real skepticism here about who actually backed out of the deal and why the coverage seems tilted. From there it's a stretch of speculation around the CIA director's overnight trip to meet with Russian officials, with theories ranging from Iran sanctions messaging to something involving England, before the hosts settle on a more mundane explanation. The back half shifts to Elon Musk's newly announced Terrafab project, reportedly set to be one of the largest physical structures on Earth, and what it means when Trump's data center rhetoric and Musk's building plans start looking suspiciously coordinated. A August 2025 flashback clip also gets revisited for context.

In this episode, Michael Meade explores how when the world seems to make no sense, myth can make the most sense. Stories of renewal of the Earth can help us see the world with different eyes and create new contexts for facing the threats of climate change and stopping ecological degradation. Myth has a redeeming function as stories become vessels of imagination and inspiration that can open new ways to see the world.     Imagination has a way of lighting on truths that reason cannot find. Imagination can reveal inner dimensions and hidden resources in our individual and collective lives and in the world. Mythic narratives can inspire greater imagination and creativity in all fields of endeavor while helping to heal the gaps between nature and culture.     Thank you for listening to and supporting Living Myth.
