What Authenticity in Healthcare Looks like!

Authenticity is highly valued: On the whole, we don’t like or trust people who come across as phony and false. With major emphasis on patient and family centered care, Healthcare Professionals are asked to be "more relatable, approachable and more authentic", but is that really consistent with the definition of being authentic? Authenticity in healthcare has qualifiers and in this episode I dissect the anatomy of authenticity, examine what those qualifiers are and how you can differentiate effective from ineffective authenticity.    Takeaways in This Episode   Definition of authenticity Core qualities that contribute to authenticity What are the qualifies to authenticity for a healthcare professional? How does one show measurable vulnerability? What is a provisional self and how does one create it? What is "emotional labor" and how to avoid it? Do authenticity and conformity go together? "Idiosyncrasy credit" and why does one need it? Effective Vs. ineffective authenticity. And lo it descends from on high, like a celestial being, or perhaps maybe just a bird that hit a skyscraper window: It's another episode of Morgendorks! This week, we're looking at the deeply unfortunately titled "Groped by an Angel." When Quinn starts believing hard in guardian angels, it's up to Daria to keep her eyes from rolling out of her head—but a party at Brittney's is about to test Quinn's faith. It's a weird episode that actually led to a lot of fascinating discussions! We also eschew our normal cultural context for some fan mail this week, which we'd normally feel a little bad about—but this fan mail is *awesome*. We had a blast with it. Dr Chris Foreman graduated in 1999 with a Masters in theoretical physics from Edinburgh University. He spent four years doing defence research in the UK, first with DERA and then QinetiQ in satellite communications before returning to education in Cambridge in 2004 to complete a Masters in Nanotechnology and a PhD in Protein Engineering at Cambridge University UK graduating in 2010.  He took two postdocs - one in bio-inspired manufacturing and one in computational simulations of proteins. He moved to the US for a research position at Northwestern University in 2016 and currently he researches how to build computers out of chemicals with a view to changing the way that we manufacture materials to be more like biology.  In 2015, during his second postdoc, he became local area co-ordinator for 38 Degrees in Cambridge and organised and facilitated many public seminars, injecting scientific reasoning into helping locals discuss topics of interest to them. On transferring to the US he became a Fellow of the RSA and in that capacity is the director of Deliberation Gateway—a national RSA-US network supporting the conversion of the US democracy to deliberative democracy. He is also on the co-ordination committee of Democracy Without Elections—a new grassroots organisation that is the US off-shoot of the Sortition Foundation, and he is the founder of Community Deliberation Network—a local society at Northwestern University which promotes and teaches the proper use of deliberation. He has recently co-authored a book entitled Brave Green World which is published by MIT Press and will be available in March 2021. LINKS What unmet needs could be met by deliberation? 3 Ways to Catch and Turn Around Our Brain's Negativity Bias

“The negative bias is our tendency not only to register negative stimuli more readily but also to dwell on these events. Also known as positive-negative asymmetry, this negativity bias means that we feel the sting of a rebuke more powerfully than we feel the joy of praise.”*It’s easy for our minds to get into this negativity bias mindset. We spend so much of our time perusing social media, comparing ourselves to others, watching the news, and focusing on all the things going wrong. It’s a slippery slope, and when you’ve found yourself in this mindspace, it’s hard to get out. But, in today’s minisode, Dhru takes us through the 3 ways to catch and turn around our brain’s negativity bias:Step One: Catch the Negativity Bias. The faster we catch ourselves stuck in the negativity bias, the happier we'll become long term. It can be hard to know when we’re actually in it, but Dhru discusses how to tune into yourself and start becoming aware.Step Two: Question it, Name it, and Tame it. To turn around the negativity bias, we must understand what our mind is looking for, why it’s on the hunt, and how to shake off the negativity.Step Three: Create a Positivity Bubble. While we normally think about living “in a bubble” to be a bad thing, Dhru challenges you to see it as a good thing. Extraordinary times call for legendary leadership. Because of the Coronavirus, shit is getting very weird. As Hunter Thompson said, “When the going gets weird, the weird turns pro” which is why it’s time to become a Digital Leader and over-communicate. Primary Mode of Communication In times of crisis, people need to both see and hear from their leaders. Former navy seal and former Chief of Staff for 4-star General Stanley McCrystal, Chris Fussell was on FYD episode 38 and he made a comment on digital leadership in an article he wrote on NY Times.  He made a comment on “digital leadership and said “first, don’t hunker down. Second, demonstrate candor.” Christopher thinks this is good advice especially in times like this, the only way people are experiencing their leaders is digital. “Going forward once we get through this crisis, it is very clear, digital communication will become, if it is not already, the primary way that your employees hear from you and see you.” - Christopher Lochhead Leaders Are Not Overcommunicating Christopher observed that CEOs, CMOs or any business leaders at the moment are not communicating much. This to him is a big mistake. He shares that Fussel and McCrystal are right on, from a tactical point of view. He also encourages leaders, not only to improve public speaking skills but to get comfortable with technology such as Zoom.  “I don’t think you can be a leader anymore unless you’re a digital leader.” - Christopher Lochhead To cite an example, Chris Fussel talked about McChrystal doing daily briefings. He couldn’t take a top-down approach on communications that he needed to be front and center with all of his people and so he started daily briefings using video and audio. Becoming a Digital Leader As a CEO, CMO, of business leader the first a-ha here is that you can’t be a leader unless you’re a digital leader. Since its the only way for people to experience you, you must get comfortable with technology. Make the necessary upgrades on your hardware such as microphone, camera, among others.  Consider having daily CEO briefings. Learn how to motivate your employees and ask the tough questions. Be radically candid and keep in mind, LISTEN, LISTEN, LISTEN.  To hear more about Christopher’s thoughts digital leadership and overcommunicating. download and listen to this episode.  Bio: Christopher Lochhead is a #1 Apple podcaster and #1 Amazon bestselling co-author of books: Niche Down and Play Bigger. On the 32nd episode of Virtual Stack Podcast, I'm joined by Kenneth Reilly (CTO at LevelUP) and we talk about Low-Code Development. Low-Code (often referred to as No-Code) development platforms provide an environment where programmers create their application software through graphical user interfaces and configuration instead of traditional computer programming. While this brings many benefits, especially speed and agility in prototyping and enabling a broader range of users with software development skills, some developers question if low-code is fit for large-scale or mission critical applications. Why iPadOS Changes EVERYTHING

Back in early 2015 I asked Apple and the world a question: “What if the iPad ran iPadOS?” At the time, iPad may not have been quote-unquote just a big iPod touch, but it wasn’t much more than an iPod touch gone IMAX. Then, slowly, every couple of years, it started getting exclusive features like Side-by-Side apps and Picture-in-Picture video. Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard. Multi-window Drag-and-Drop and workspaces. But, only every couple of years. Because the iPad didn’t have its own OS like the Mac, the Watch, or even the TV, Apple wasn’t forced to show off new features every year at WWDC. So, some years, under the crunch of iPhone or just general features, they didn’t. Now, Apple has finally made one of my longer standing dreams into reality. iPadOS. And not just because it’s neat or right or just for the iPad, which has long had its won experience, to have its own, named iOS variant the way most other major products do, but because of the demands that come with it having its own, named variant. From now on, whether it’s just a little like tvOS or a lot like iOS — which, ironically, was originally called iPhone OS — every year, Apple is going to have to have something to say about the iPad at WWDC. Is Apple Really Killing iTunes?

Apple isn’t killing iTunes on Monday. Tim Cook isn’t coming to your house and deleting all the music and movies you’ve bought and downloaded over the years. There will be no Thanos snap live on stage. No decimation around the world. None of that is true or real in any true or real way. So, why are there so many headlines saying iTunes is ending and the age of digital downloads is over? Because, apparently, writers can’t read, fact checkers can’t check facts, and editors are too busy baiting clicks and not busy enough thinking about the needless stress and anxiety they’re causing the audience that relies on their reporting. Instead of taking a big camera bag and my big cameras with me — I’m trying out the Peek right now and I’m still using the GH-5 to shoot all this — I’m going to keep things ultra light and ultra mobile. "No matter where you are now, you can be or do anything in five years."In our inaugural episode we discuss how a typical girls night out together turned into an evening of deep, soulful conversations about life in our 40s (!!!), parenting, career, passions and where we envisioned ourselves at 50 (!!!). That epic night out led us to embark on an incredible adventure to launch a podcast about getting out of our comfort zones, chasing our dreams and feeling gratitude every step of the way. In this episode we:Share some thought-provoking research studies and statistics behind how dreams that are backed by goals, action and accountability are much more likely to come true rather than those just floating around in our heads (thankfully, Tanya loves numbers so this episode has all the brainy facts and figures!) Talk through ways you can figure out your goals, set those goals, take action and be accountable for them.Dive into the notion of the "power of visualization." Learn how envisioning what you want in your life and only letting those visions enter your mindset isn't merely fluff or "woo-woo" as Christiana likes to say, but it's actually backed by research (do you see a pattern here with numbers? Tanya really likes to back up the "dreamy" with facts).Explain what a "dreamboard" is and why it's such a powerful tool that can serve as your roadmap, your personal life GPS to get you centered and on track to live a life with no could haves, should haves or what ifs.Episode 1 Weekly Challenge:Kindly head over to iTunes and hit subscribe, rate and review the Dreamboard Social Club podcast and be sure to let all your friends know that they have a place to come to for motivation, inspiration and accountability to live life to the absolute fullest. We are pastors, teachers, and chaplains. We are also doctors, lawyers, and astronomers, among many other roles in Church and society. In our varied ministries, we care for the whole person: body, mind, and soul. And especially in our education ministries, we seek to nurture "men and women for others."     Acolyte/Altar Server   The office of altar server was created around a thousand years ago so there would be a group of people who could stand in for acolytes when none were available. Today that is the case in most parishes, and therefore the position of altar server has come to predominate at most Masses.   https://www.catholic.com/qa/is-there-a-distinction-between-acolytes-and-altar-servers-if-so-please-explain     Tabernacle is the "magic box" for the "blessed sacrament" aka the blessed cracker. http://www.catholicdeacon.org/mass_objects.htm   Transubstantiation (Latin: transsubstantiatio; Greek: μετουσίωσις metousiosis) is, according to the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church, the change of substance or essence by which the bread and wine offered in the sacrifice of the sacrament of the Eucharist during the Mass, become, in reality, the body and blood of Jesus Christ. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transubstantiation Transfiguration: In these accounts, Jesus and three of his apostles, Peter, James, John, go to a mountain (the Mount of Transfiguration) to pray. On the mountain, Jesus begins to shine with bright rays of light. Then the prophets Moses and Elijahappear next to him and he speaks with them. Jesus is then called "Son" by a voice in the sky, assumed to be God the Father, as in the Baptism of Jesus.[1] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transfiguration_of_Jesus   Exorcist house in STL is in Bel-Nor not Belle Fountain   Realtor DID NOT disclose the backstory. https://www.riverfronttimes.com/stlouis/hell-of-a-house/Content?oid=2491650   Requests for exorcisms have increased!   https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/world/2018/02/23/vatican-host-international-exorcism-conference-meet-growing-demand/367735002/ The International Catholic Association of Exorcists is an organization of Catholic Exorcist Priests & Bishops.  All Clergy are validly ordained in Apostolic Succession. The title "the Greater" was added to St. James' name to help distinguish him from the Apostle James "the Less," who is believed to have been shorter than James "the Greater." Saint James the Greater was one of Jesus' first disciples. James was fishing with his father and John the Apostle when Jesus came to the shores of the Sea of Galilee and called for the fisherman, who were unable to catch any fish that day, to dip their nets in the water once again. When the fishermen followed Jesus' instructions, they found their nets full, and after emptying the fish on board, the boats nearly sank from their weight. Later, James was one of only three called by Jesus to witness his Transfiguration, and when he and his brother wanted to call fire upon a Samaritan town, both were rebuked by Jesus. Following Christ's Ascension, James spread the Gospel across Israel and the Roman kingdom as well. He traveled and spread the Word for nearly forty years in Spain. It is said that one day, as he prayed, The Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to him and asked him to build her a church, which he did.

She and Tim get together to compare notes on teaching Intro and discuss their strategies to make the class run effectively. They talk about why the elements and principles are so important (4:30), how you can use visual journals to enhance your students' skills (11:00), and how we can make each student feel successful (17:15).    Resources and Links: What is the Purpose of Art One? I kind of feel naked with a bloated belly in this episode. I was so lost in my own negativity spiral when I recorded this episode. Then I found Zofie and Relax Me Happy and my perspective has really shifted. Maybe I was not ready or maybe I did not have the right teacher. I know it sounds simple, but since then I have been so focused on ye old proverbial phrase “glass half full”. Anyhow, this is a very honest interview with Karly Nimmo, who is so lovable, honest and smart and makes you feel like her instant best friend. I feel like she and I are spiritual/podcasting soul sister and we both also have voice over careers! I dream of having a podcast with Karly! And going on retreats with her in Thailand. Or maybe Karly and I meet in Thailand every 6 months and record 20 episodes at a time! Dreamy! Meet Karly Nimmo! You will love her! SHOW NOTES: We are often looking for that place when we are free of struggle…that fairy tale place. We’re just where we need to be at any given moment. Leaning in means allowing and trusting instead of resisting. The judgement of others doesn’t matter. People are generally uncomfortable with other’s pain. They want us not to feel that pain, because it makes them feel uncomfortable. We are already the person we are meant to be, we are just not seeing it because we are over complicating it. Thinking about dying makes shit very real. It’s all about choices, and taking responsibility for ourselves. Be okay with it, own it. The world is just the mirror to what is going on inside. Judgement is always about us. When you strip away all the other voices and other people’s stories about you, you get to the real you. The love we crave is there ALL THE TIME. Your version of success can only be defined by YOU You can’t be all things to all people. You can only be you. Links What happened to the “fail-safe” Svalbard seed vault designed to save us from crop failure. http://wp.me/p5Cqpo-ffT Washington Post: preposterously warm winter Inside Climate news: began melting at an alarming rate **** This is the World Organic News for the week ending 22nd of May 2017. Jon Moore reporting! This week we bring troubling news. The seedbank at Svalbard was flooded. I’m sure we can all understand that mixing seeds and water is not ideal for long term preservation of said seed stocks. There is, though, much more to this than first meets the eye. Svalbard was the doomsday defense for humanity’s food seeds. So far above the arctic circle and never above -18degrees C that’s around zero degrees F, the facility was set up as a set and forget operation. The ground temperature rarely varied, the ground continually frozen, a safe place for our food seeds. All this sounds great but and I quote: Quote: The Arctic experienced a preposterously warm winter last season, and the permafrost, which has been thawing in recent years, suddenly began melting at an alarming rate. The region near the seed vault experienced heavy rain when it should have been snowing. The resulting breach at Svalbard is making experts question the “fail-safe” nature of the vault. End Quote Where are we now? For a start Svalbard is not longer set and forget, it’s monitored daily. The seeds are, apparently, still safe. It is also worth remembering that Svalbard is not the only seed bank in the world. It is, as a seed library, a lender of last resort but it’s collected seeds are also held in other seed banks across the globe. Maybe putting some samples of all our seed types in one place may have been more of an ”all your eggs in one basket” sort of decision. Equally I can see having everything in one place is great for research and convenience. The water never reached the seed collections. This is a good thing. Quote: Water flooded into the entrance tunnel to the vault after the unusual season, the Guardian reported Friday (May 19).Thankfully, the water froze before it reached the seed storage areas (to preserve their viability, seeds are stored at -18 Celsius, or just below 0 degrees Fahrenheit). End Quote. But, perhaps more than the seed saving implications are the climate change signals this flooding points to. Permafrost is high in contained methane. That is methane that is locked away from the atmosphere. Methane in the atmosphere is CO2 on steroids. It does however wash out of the system relatively quickly. It is gone in a few years not few centuries as is the case with CO2. So to the big question: Was the warm winter just experienced in the Northern Hemisphere a one off or sign of things to come? There is no way to tell. The nature of these things is multivariable and difficult to predict. What I’ve noticed in the past twelve months is a strange slowing of weather events. Last southern Summer when the permafrost was melting in the northern hemisphere, we in Australia were subject, twice, to a series of low pressure systems lining up from the north west to the south east. These had the effect of funneling desert air which is, not surprisingly, hot down from the deserts into New South Wales. Temperatures of 46 degrees C, or around 115 degrees F into regions where this is not common. Yes we’ve had hot spells before but this was different. The systems stayed in place for days, almost a week. In the past a hot spell of around 40 to 42 would last two days, or so, and then we’d be hit with a southerly cold change. Not this time. The systems broke up slowly and the temperatures returned to “normal” in air quotes, temperatures of 30 - 35 degrees C. We are now in Autumn and a similar slowdown in systems is occurring. We were fortunate last weekend that the predicted systems bringing rain drifted off shore before dumping a month's average rainfall in a day. We still had rain but most of it fell over the ocean. The point here was the forecast for an extremely slow moving system, again. Opposite ends of the world, Norway and Australia, changes in weather patterns. Anecdotal evidence, not data, yet. Toss in the rising sea levels and relocation of peoples in low lying Pacific Islands and the Maldives in the Indian Ocean and we probably have enough effects to actually start marching in the streets to force our politicians to get of their behinds and make some actual decisions for our good not the good of lobbying vested interests stuck in a world of fossil fuels, industrial agriculture and subsidies. A further piece in the puzzle fell into place for me back in January. I was watching a news report on farming and this farmer, a fourth generation farmer on the same piece of land stated he and dad used to start silage cutting in the first week of November, he starts in the last week of August. Ten weeks earlier, just let that sink in for a moment. Pasture growth has changed so much, he start harvesting feed for next winter, ten weeks earlier that he or his father had ever done before. I think there are sufficient signs for us to take action. Svalbard may have been set up as our seedbank of last resort, the thawing of the permafrost and the flooding of the entrance may be off even greater value to us as a species. It may, nay, it should be the last warning we need to actually redesign, rebuild and renew our ways of doing things. Yes the world is preoccupied with the childish tantrums of North Korea and US politics, the Middle East and any number of other power plays yet these pale into insignificance before the bigger picture the flooded and frozen entrance to a remote seedbank has revealed. To repeat someone else’s words, and I don’t know who or I would acknowledge them: Maybe it’s time to stop fighting over who created the Earth and start fighting those who are destroying our life support systems ! And on that thought we will end this week’s episode. If you’ve liked what you heard, please tell everyone you know any way you can! I’d also really appreciate a review on iTunes. This may or may not help others to find us but it gives this podcaster an enormous thrill! Thanks in advance!
