Is your child's relationship with food already shaped by guilt, fear, or "good food/bad food" rules — even before they can talk? Registered dietitian Jennifer Anderson, founder of Kids Eat in Color, joins Dr. Aliza Pressman to unpack "embodied independence" — the idea that raising confident eaters means combining a healthy relationship with food and the practical skills to take care of one's body. This is a must-listen for any parent trying to raise a healthy eater without passing down diet culture baggage. What you'll learn: Why labeling foods "good" or "bad" creates food rules, guilt, and inflexible thinking later in life Practical scripts for introducing dessert without using food as a reward or a bargaining chip Red flags for extreme picky eating and ARFID — and when to bring concerns to your pediatrician The "sit, connect, and expose" approach that gets even the pickiest toddlers trying new foods How to set boundaries with grandparents and relatives around sweets and body comments

Are you feeling overwhelmed by the complex systems surrounding your child's mental and behavioral health? In this episode, we dive deep into how families can bridge the gap between schools, medical providers, and home life to ensure every child thrives. Join us for a powerful conversation about advocacy, collaboration, and the importance of meeting children where they are.In this episode, host Jae sits down with Dr. Katrina Ostmeyer, PhD, the founder of Beyond the Individual and a professor at the University of Kansas. Katrina shares her unique journey from academia to clinical practice, sparked by her own experiences as a parent of children who do not always fit the traditional mold. We explore the common frustrations of siloed systems where schools, insurance companies, and parents often find themselves at odds rather than working together.Katrina explains why true collaboration is the secret ingredient to progress and how her clinic provides a continuum of care that empowers families rather than creating long-term dependency. We also discuss the vital role of parental self-regulation, exploring why parenting is often more about managing our own emotions than controlling our children. Whether you are navigating an IEP, seeking behavioral support, or looking for ways to better regulate your household, this episode offers practical wisdom and encouragement.Chapters0:00 Intro and Welcome2:15 Katrina's Journey to Psychology and Practice5:30 Filling Service Gaps in Mental Health8:45 The Problem with Siloed Systems12:00 Collaboration Over Blame in Child Success15:15 Parenting and Self-Regulation18:30 Focus on Guidance and Autonomy21:45 The Beyond the Individual Service Model25:00 Moving Toward Independence in Therapy28:30 Working with Schools and IEP Teams31:15 Telehealth and Reaching Families Everywhere34:00 Final Takeaways and Self-Care35:51 End of VideoIf you found this conversation helpful, please like this video and subscribe to our channel for more insights on supporting your children. We start with a little baseball nostalgia and somehow ends with us debating whether a man would trade a live rattlesnake for chicken tenders—which, honestly, is a pretty accurate summary of the intellectual journey you've signed up for with this funny podcast. The crew kicks things off after learning Daryl Strawberry was spotted in the stands shaking hands with an old teammate, which naturally gets everybody talking baseball, Strawberry's career, and his St. Louis-area connection. From there, we smoothly transition—as only a professional broadcasting operation like ours can—into one of the most stressful decisions a parent can make: where the heck is your kid going to college?Rizz is getting ready to hit the road for Fayetteville and is making a strong sales pitch for the University of Arkansas. Moon brings his own college-tour experience to the table, including some serious love for Tuscaloosa and the University of Alabama campus. Rafe weighs in on Fayetteville, Madison, Laramie and more as the guys break down a ranking of the best college towns in America.Ann Arbor takes the top spot, but that doesn't stop the crew from debating Arizona State, Virginia, Florida, Florida State, Wisconsin, Berkeley, Purdue, Wyoming and Illinois. There are beautiful campuses, brutal winters, business schools, Walmart money and the eternal parental dream of convincing your kid that the school YOU like is obviously the school THEY should like. Parenting! Then we arrive in Florida. And things immediately get stupid. It's time for Fake News or Florida, the game where contestants have to decide whether a ridiculous headline actually happened in Florida or whether the show made it up. The problem is that writing fake Florida headlines is nearly impossible because actual Florida keeps producing material that sounds like it was written by three raccoons sharing a laptop. Was a woman dressed as a hot dog arrested after covering a neighbor's car in toilet paper? Did police arrest Chuck E. Cheese while he was still in costume? Did someone throw an alligator through a drive-thru window? Did a guy in a Batman onesie detain a burglary suspect? Could a 300-pound feral hog interrupt somebody doing a crossword puzzle? And, most importantly, how much faith should anyone place in Moon as a lifeline? The answers become increasingly concerning. We also encounter a runaway kangaroo, a rainbow-painted manatee statue, a man hiding a gun under silicone breasts, a burglar with a live ferret stuffed down his pants, hundreds of mysteriously delivered shower curtains and the possibility of a rattlesnake-for-chicken-tenders barter economy.Moon spends much of the game carefully analyzing every detail, constructing thoughtful arguments and then discovering that Florida does not recognize the laws of logic. It's like watching Sherlock Holmes investigate a gas-station parking lot at 2 a.m.This funny podcast packs baseball talk, college-town arguments, listener chaos, bizarre headlines, St. Louis humor and enough Florida news to make you wonder whether the state should simply start issuing press releases titled, “You're Not Going To Believe This One Either.”It's another episode of The Rizzuto Show where celebrity and sports talk collide with weird news, sarcastic humor and the kind of daily comedy that probably shouldn't count as educational—but technically you will learn several things.Mostly about ferrets.Come for Daryl Strawberry and the college debate. Stay for the moment everyone has to seriously consider whether someone tried to exchange a live rattlesnake for chicken tenders. That's the kind of journalism this funny podcast is brave enough to tackle.Follow The Rizzuto Show → linktr.ee/rizzshow for more from your favorite daily comedy show.Connect with The Rizzuto Show Comedy Podcast online → 1057thepoint.com/RizzShow.Hear The Rizz Show daily on the radio at 105.7 The Point | Hubbard Radio in St. Louis, MO.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Money. Intimacy. Chores. Parenting. Sometimes it's just the way they said "okay." If it feels like you're fighting about everything, don't try to fix everything. Fix this first. In this episode, I'm joined by my colleague Alejandra Piñero Stillmann, a licensed marriage and family therapist at Growing Self, to talk about the one change that makes every other relationship problem easier to solve: emotionally safe communication. Because here's what I've learned after working with thousands of couples... The fight you're having is rarely the real problem. When couples feel stuck, they usually try to solve money, intimacy, parenting, or household conflict one issue at a time. But if every conversation turns into an argument, none of those problems stay solved. The foundation has to come first. In this episode you'll learn: Why you're probably fixing the wrong problem The real reason the same arguments keep happening What emotionally safe communication actually looks like How to stop seeing each other as opponents and start working as a team Why lasting relationship change takes practice—not perfection The one question to ask your partner tonight that can change the entire conversation If you're ready to take the next step, download my free Communication That Connects training and workbook at www.growingself.com/communication. And if you'd like personalized support, you can learn more about Alejandra Piñero Stillmann and book a free consultation at www.growingself.com/alejandra. Alejandra works with individuals and couples in both English and Spanish and specializes in helping people build healthier, more connected relationships. Sometimes the biggest breakthrough in your relationship isn't solving the biggest fight. It's finally learning how to have a different conversation. Can we talk about something that is really hard for so many moms? Your kids growing up. Because here's the thing nobody tells you... Parenting doesn't end when they turn 18. The worries just change. When they were little, you worried about scraped knees, grades, and whether they were eating enough vegetables. Now you worry about: Are they making good choices? Are they happy? Are they struggling? Are they walking with God? Are they going to be okay? And maybe the hardest part... You can't fix it anymore. You can't step in and make the decision for them. You can't protect them from every heartbreak, mistake, or consequence. And if you're anything like many women I talk to, that helpless feeling can be overwhelming. Sometimes that stress leads us straight to the things we've used for relief... The glass of wine at the end of the day. The scrolling. The overthinking. The constant trying to figure out what we can do differently. But friend, what if the invitation isn't to try harder? What if it's to surrender deeper? In today's episode of the Set Free Sisterhood Podcast, we're talking about: ✨ Why worrying can feel like love ✨ The difference between caring and carrying ✨ How to stop trying to control what you cannot control ✨ What it looks like to trust God with your adult children ✨ How to love your kids while still protecting your own peace One of my favorite verses for this season is Philippians 4:6-7: "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God..." Notice Paul doesn't tell us not to care. He tells us where to take our care. Your adult children need your love. They need your prayers. They need your wisdom when invited. But they do not need you to carry their entire life on your shoulders. That burden was never yours. If you've been exhausted from worrying about someone you love, I hope this episode reminds you: You can love deeply and still let go. You can pray faithfully and still have peace. You can be a good mom and stop carrying what only God can handle. ❤️ Michelle Ready to get support or even curious? Email me michelle@setfreesisterhood.com

In this episode, Dr. Paul Jenkins uncovers the unexpected strength found in simply saying 'I don't know.' While this phrase is often seen as a weakness or a lack of confidence, Dr. Paul encourages listeners to embrace it as a starting point for humility and open-mindedness. By acknowledging our inability to predict the future, we create a mental space that allows us to respond more thoughtfully to our feelings and reduce anxiety. This space also empowers us to make choices instead of reacting based on unfounded predictions.   Embracing 'I don't know' also reveals our capability to handle whatever comes our way, tapping into our innate resilience. Drawing from Dr. Susan Jeffers' notion that most fears stem from the belief that we 'can't handle' something, Dr. Paul challenges this limiting belief with evidence from our past victories over adversity. Pain and challenge, he explains, do not equate to failure but are part of our human experience, pushing us to learn and grow in ways we may not initially appreciate.   Dr. Paul introduces the concept of metacognition, thinking about our own thinking, as a tool for positive change. Recognizing that our practiced thoughts can become habitual, he highlights the value of intentional thinking practices to reprogram our minds. The episode welcomes listeners to explore the Emotional Freedom Challenge, a free opportunity to develop and exercise this cognitive skill, creating more empowerment and emotional resilience.   Ultimately, accepting 'I don't know' as a path to possibility allows us to stop rehearsing undesirable futures and positions us to handle whatever reality brings. It's about trusting our capacity to grow and learn, thus choosing a powerful, purposeful stance toward life's uncertainties.

Who Gets the Best Version of You? - Episode 136

Who gets the best version of you? It's an uncomfortable question, especially when the answer doesn't line up with what you say matters most. In this episode, we unpack how easy it is to give our patience, energy, attention, and best thinking to our work, only to come home and give the people we love whatever is left. We talk honestly about busy seasons, performance, distraction, taking relationships for granted, and the difference between simply being in the room and actually being present. If you've ever ended the day realizing your family, your friends, or even yourself got the leftovers, this conversation is an invitation to slow down, pay attention, and start showing up differently for the people who matter most.5 InsightsThe people we love most often get what's left. We spend the day giving our patience, attention, creativity, and energy to work, then come home expecting our families to understand why there's nothing left in the tank.Your calendar doesn't always reveal your priorities. Your attention does. You can spend hours with someone without really being with them. Presence means putting down the phone, quieting the mental checklist, listening, and making the person in front of you feel like they matter.Safe relationships can become relationships we take for granted. We assume our spouse, kids, family, and closest friends will always be there, which makes it dangerously easy to borrow energy from those relationships while investing our best elsewhere.Busy seasons require more intentionality, not less. Life probably won't ever feel perfectly balanced. There will be seasons when work demands more. The challenge is recognizing when a temporary grind has quietly become the way we live.Being present requires learning to slow down. When we're constantly chasing the next meeting, task, notification, or accomplishment, even an extra five minutes with someone can feel inconvenient. Sometimes the most important thing we can do is stop measuring every moment by productivity and simply stay where our feet are.One TruthThe people who matter most shouldn't have to settle for the version of you that's left over.

What Fresh Hell: Laughing in the Face of Motherhood | Parenting Tips From Funny Moms

What happens when one child's needs take up most of a family's attention? Even when parents are doing their best, it can be easy for another child to quietly become the “easy” one—the independent kid, the high achiever, the people-pleaser who never seems to need anything. In this episode, we discuss: What the term glass child means and why some children can become overlooked How hyperindependence can be both a strength and a sign that a child doesn't feel comfortable asking for help Why people-pleasing isn't inherently a bad quality—and when it can become a problem How being the “easy,” responsible, or high-achieving child can lead to perfectionism Why some kids learn to hide anger, sadness, resentment, or other difficult emotions The importance of making space for children to express complicated feelings without judgment How small-T trauma and difficult family dynamics can affect kids even when their experiences don't seem “bad enough” compared with someone else's Why children may act out or seek negative attention when they're feeling overlooked How parents can use short, intentional moments of one-on-one connection to help every child feel seen The idea behind the 7-minute rule: finding small windows of distraction-free connection throughout the day How connection can look different at different ages, from play and cuddling with young children to mentorship and open communication with teens Why you don't need to perfectly balance your attention every single day to make your kids feel loved and supported Here are links to some of the resources mentioned in the episode: Jenn Lonzer for the Cleveland Clinic: Always Coping, Rarely Seen: Explaining Glass Child Syndrome Dr Becky Kennedy of "Good Inside" blog: What is the 777 Rule in Parenting? Why Teachers Hate 'Gentle Parenting'

Unpopular Opinion - I know.   But it's true! I haven't meant a single PreK or Elementary Teacher who would tell me they LOVE Gentle Parenting.  But let's be real - teachers don't hate 'gentle parenting' because they want harsh discipline. They hate what it can turn into when boundaries disappear: kids who  can't regulate their emotions, make many demands, and derail learning for the rest of the class.I'm Flora McCormick, a licensed therapist and parenting coach, and I'm pulling together what I've seen for 20 plus years with what educators tell me off the record. We talk about why children are supposed to test limits, how cause and effect drives child behavior, and how our responses can accidentally train more screaming, more negotiation, and less frustration tolerance. You'll also hear concrete “red flag” patterns that often signal gentle parenting has slid into permissive parenting, like hour-long bedtime support, constant emotional processing that crowds out follow-through, escalating picky eating without a medical cause, and disrespect toward adults and other kids. What is a better alternative? Sustainable Parenting - a version of Positive Discipline which focuses on strategies that holds kindness and firmness at the same time. And trust me - I'm only sharing this harsh truth because I was the parenting making the mistakes of overly-gentle parenting.  And I share about that in this episode. If you want a calmer home, smoother transitions, and a child who can handle “no” and recover, you'll leave with a clear direction and next steps, including resources if coaching isn't an option right now.Books I recommend on Kind & Firm Parenting: Positive Discipline (ages 2-12): https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/825309/positive-discipline-2nd-edition-by-jane-nelsen-edd/Parenting a Child Who Has Intense Emotions (ages 5-18): https://a.co/d/04cHYbWrvRaising Mentally Strong Kids (ages 5-18): https://a.co/d/01rZ9F7G✨Want more?  ✨JOIN me in the SUMMER of support:

If you've wondered why moms feel more anxious, overwhelmed, and reactive after 40, you're not alone. Hormonal changes can affect your brain, stress response, and parenting in surprising ways. Dr. Roseann Capanna-Hodge shares how Regulation First Parenting™ helps families navigate emotional dysregulation with confidence and calm.Parenting is already demanding, but when perimenopause enters the picture, many moms suddenly find themselves feeling exhausted, forgetful, short-tempered, and emotionally overwhelmed. In this episode with hormone expert Dr. Mariza, we unpack the science behind these changes and share practical ways to support your brain, hormones, and nervous system. It's not bad parenting—it's a dysregulated brain navigating a major biological transition. Why do moms feel more anxious, overwhelmed, and reactive after 40?Perimenopause is more than changing hormones—it's a major neuroendocrine transition that directly impacts brain function, stress resilience, memory, and emotional regulation. As estrogen fluctuates, the brain has to work harder, making everyday parenting feel much more difficult.A mom who once handled school drop-offs, work meetings, and bedtime with ease may suddenly find herself snapping over spilled milk or forgetting simple words. That doesn't mean she's failing—it means her biology is changing.Key takeaways:Hormones affect the brain—not just reproduction.Irritability is one of the earliest signs of perimenopause. You didn't lose your ability to cope—your brain needs more support.

Parenting can feel like an endless stream of decisions. How do you handle the attitude, the grades, the phone, the friends, the lack of motivation, or the latest conflict? But underneath all those questions is a bigger one: Who is your child becoming? In this episode, Connie Albers challenges parents to look beyond managing today's behavior and consider the adult they are preparing for tomorrow. Childhood is not the destination. Our children are learning how to make decisions, handle responsibility, navigate disappointment, develop convictions, and eventually live without us directing every step. You'll discover why some of the hardest parenting moments can become opportunities to build wisdom, resilience, self-control, courage, compassion, and faith. Because we aren't simply raising children who know how to follow our rules. We are preparing adults who will need to know how to think, choose, and live wisely on their own.   Read the listener notes with links here: You're Not Just Raising Kids. You're Raising Adults. We spend a lot of time on this show talking about creating healthy terrain through food, light, movement, and the environments we choose. But what if our very first terrain wasn't physical at all? What if our terrain was the emotional climate we grew up in, the words spoken over us, and the stories we learned to tell ourselves before we were even old enough to question them?In this conversation, we welcome pediatric physical therapist, Enlifted coach, and parenting educator Jenna Cain for a discussion about how a child's environment extends far beyond nutrition and toxins. We explore why parents often have to heal before their children do, how seemingly innocent labels can become lifelong identities, the power of asking questions instead of giving answers, and why children's behavior is often a reflection of the nervous systems around them rather than something that needs to be fixed.Jenna also shares practical tools for raising resilient children and a perspective that feels deeply aligned with Terrain Theory: that the conditions we create—physically, emotionally, and linguistically—shape how life expresses itself. If you're raising young children, healing from your own childhood, or interested in how our inner landscape influences our health and relationships, this conversation offers a crucial reminder that the first terrain any of us ever experience is home.Learn more about Jenna and her work at https://www.rootedwellnessstudio.com/.Support Terrain Theory on Patreon! What does it really mean to be part of The Sandwich Generation? This is a really personal one for me and I'm honored to welcome back Jill McNamara, LICSW, Vice President of Senior Care at Care.com and a senior care and aging expert, to talk about the emotional realities of caring for aging parents while raising a family. Following the release of Care.com's first-ever Sandwich Generation Report, Jill shares insights from a survey of 1,000 caregivers, revealing just how common and often invisible this experience has become. Together, we get into why so many caregivers don't recognize themselves as caregivers until they're already overwhelmed, the emotional weight of decision fatigue and anticipatory grief, why asking for help can feel so difficult, and the surprising personal growth that can emerge through caregiving. I open up about what's currently going on as my siblings and I continue to navigate our mom's Alzheimer's diagnosis and all the difficult decisions that comes with it as we figure out the best way forward. Whether you're currently caring for aging parents or simply want to be better prepared for the future, this conversation offers practical guidance, reassurance, and a powerful reminder that you don't have to navigate caregiving alone. To learn more, explore Care.com's 2026 Sandwich Generation Report and caregiver resources at care.com/sandwich, and follow @WeAreTheSandwichGen for ongoing support and practical tips. Zach sits down with his cousin Kara and her wife Stacy, two women he has known since before they were officially a couple, for a conversation that starts as a family reunion and turns into something much deeper. Kara and Stacy have been together for 26 years, married twice (once in civil union, once when it finally became legal), and are raising two kids, Rylan, 11, and Avery, 13, in a household they describe as running on accommodations instead of an off switch. The conversation moves through family history most people don't say out loud, including an unaddressed abuser in Kara's extended family and the trickle-down effect it has had for generations. From there, Kara and Stacy talk candidly about parenting a neurodivergent son, the grief of letting go of the parent they each expected to be, and the strategy, cost, and constant vigilance behind things as simple as a trip to an amusement park. They also get into what makes their marriage work: they don't fight, they disagree and stay in the room, and their professional lives in education and mental health mean they never fully clock out. What makes this one land is the honesty. Kara names her own theory of generational trauma, "the story you tell yourself," and traces it back to her mother, who buffered her from the worst of it without either of them ever naming it that way. Stacy, in turn, reflects on being raised by people with hot tempers and choosing, quietly and consistently, not to pass that down. By the end, Kara turns the mirror back on Zach and Rebecca's own marriage, and the answer she gives him, that you can't rationalize your way out of anything in a relationship, is as much a takeaway for the listener as it is for Zach.Key TakeawaysGenerational trauma doesn't move in a straight line. It finds new paths even when you think you've closed off the old ones."The story you tell yourself" can outlast the actual event, and revisiting your own history later in life can change what you thought you knew about it.A buffer parent, someone who absorbs hardship so their kids don't have to, can shape a person's resilience without either of them realizing it at the time.Disagreement doesn't have to mean conflict. Communication skills, not avoidance, are what let a couple skip the fighting altogether.Parenting a neurodivergent child often means grieving the parent you expected to be, even while embracing who your child actually is.Accommodations can be a love language: constant, invisible planning (escape routes, VIP tickets, visual aids) that a child may never recognize as an act of love. You can't feel or rationalize your way out of relationship problems. Longevity comes from staying honest and staying in it, even when one partner is healthier than the other at a given moment.Space, grace, and time: not every conversation needs to happen immediately, and giving people room to come back to it matters as much as the conversation itself.Guest InfoKara and Stacy are Zach's cousin (by marriage on his wife's side). Both work in education and mental health: Kara does professional talks and introductions related to her field, and Stacy is a science inclusion teacher. They live in New Jersey with their two children.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

How can you identify what naturally gives your child energy and joy?In episode 119 Patrick Lencioni and Cody Thompson explore how the Working Genius model can help you better understand, affirm, and guide your children. They explain why trying to make children more well-rounded can unintentionally suppress the qualities that make them unique. You will learn how curiosity, affirmation, and awareness of your own wiring can help your children feel seen and become more confident in who they are.Topics explored in this episode: (00:00) Parenting as a Leadership RolePatrick explains why understanding a child's Working Genius can help parents affirm natural instincts instead of treating them like problems.Patrick and Cody frame the family as an important organization that deserves the same intentional leadership and development often reserved for the workplace.(04:06) Discovering How Your Child Is WiredParents can begin identifying a child's genius by observing what gives them energy, what frustrates them, and what they naturally choose to do.Cody encourages parents to lead with curiosity rather than assuming their role is to straighten out or reshape a child's natural tendencies.(07:28) Affirming Features Instead of Fixing FlawsPatrick and Cody give examples of how parents can affirm children with Wonder, Galvanizing, Discernment, and Invention. They explain how seemingly harmless corrections can communicate that a child's deepest instincts are defects that need to be suppressed.(11:46) Letting Children Use Their GiftsThe hosts examine how Enablement and Tenacity can be misunderstood when parents prioritize independence, relaxation, or conventional ideas of balance.Affirming a child's genius creates the trust needed to guide them when they overuse a strength without making them feel ashamed of it.(15:22) How a Parent's Genius Shapes the HomeParents can reduce guilt and judgment by recognizing how their own geniuses and frustrations influence the way they lead and respond to their children.Sharing strengths and limitations with children teaches them that nobody is good at everything and frees them to pursue careers aligned with their own gifts. This episode of The Working Genius Podcast with Patrick Lencioni is brought to you by The Table Group: www.tablegroup.com. What if the parent report card you've been grading yourself on this whole time was never actually yours to fill out? Episode summary bullets: Nicole Barlow, longtime foster and adoptive mom and one of our Cultivate Connection facilitators, shares how she went from feeling like a "rockstar" foster parent to realizing she was in way over her head. Why the peer-to-peer model at the heart of Cultivate Connection matters: none of us are exempt from putting these tools into practice in our own homes. The weight of being watched. Nicole opens up about neighbors, strangers, and offhand comments that shaped how she saw her own parenting. How Nicole's understanding of Scripture around obedience and discipline shifted over time (a perspective she shares from her own faith journey). Redefining success: from "my kids are compliant" to "does my adult child still call me, even from a hard place?" Why a compliant kid isn't always a regulated kid, and what Nicole wishes she'd noticed sooner in her own home. Dysregulation isn't disobedience: a look at fight, flight, freeze, and fawn, and why repair matters more than perfection. Nicole and Jesse's honest conversation about social media, comparison, and the images of parenting we quietly measure ourselves against. Nicole's closing encouragement for any parent white-knuckling their way through this season: "It's not yours to carry." La chancla. El cinto. La cuchara. There are memes about them. People wear them like a badge of honor. Like it's just part of who we are. But what if it was never ours to begin with? In this episode, I sit down with Leslie Priscilla — founder of Latinx Parenting, certified parent coach with over 17 years of experience, and author of the brand new book CHANCLA: Healing Our Family, Ourselves, and Our Culture Through Nonviolent Parenting. This conversation broke my brain in the best way possible. We go deep into the history behind chancla culture, how colonization shaped the way we raise our children, and what it actually looks like to break the cycle — for our kids and for ourselves. I also share something personal I wasn't planning to. Something I think a lot of you will recognize in your own bodies. In this episode we cover: What chancla culture is actually rooted in — and why it was never our culture to begin with How colonization shows up in the way we discipline our kids What adult supremacy is and how it shows up in Latine families The needs underneath our children's behavior — and our own What decolonial nonviolent parenting actually looks like in real life Why healing our children starts with healing ourselves Co-parenting, blended families, and keeping kids at the center Pre-order Leslie's book CHANCLA

This is a special live Q&A recorded inside Apogee, where the hosts turned the tables and interviewed Larry alongside his wife Jessica for a rare joint conversation. Married 23 years with four sons, the two open up about what actually creates safety in a home, and their answer surprises the room: it starts with relentlessly prioritizing the marriage. From there they get honest about the early years when Larry admits he floundered and didn't lead well, how Jessica learned to call him forward without emasculating him, and why connection always has to come before correction. They talk repair as the true measure of a relationship, letting kids witness the full cycle of a disagreement, and Larry shares the hardest parts of his own story, an estranged mother and a father who left twice, and what forgiveness has and hasn't looked like. If you want a real look inside a marriage that leads, this one delivers.   Timeline Summary [1:05] – Larry and Jessica join Apogee, and the watermelon splitter jokes begin [5:03] – The Freud quote on a child's need for protection, and Larry's book for his boys [6:19] – What's really happening in a home when a child feels deeply safe [7:01] – The frying pan on the back burner: how marriages slide after kids arrive [8:29] – Marriage as a skill, not just a feeling, and the tactical work it requires [9:09] – Telling his 12 year old he prioritizes mom, and why that creates safety [10:04] – The 18 year old who wants to be home because of how his parents love [11:05] – Jessica on kids modeling what they see, and her daughter wanting flowers [13:16] – Jessica's loving, family oriented upbringing versus Larry's chaotic one [15:08] – Jessica's honesty: he did not lead very well in the early years [15:51] – Calling him forward with love instead of a finger in his face [17:28] – Connection before correction, and picking one when forced to choose [20:55] – Why calling someone forward implies connection and trust already exist [22:08] – Without connection you have no influence, even with your own kids [23:14] – Having tough conversations through activity: walks, workouts, the range [23:38] – Hold On to Your Kids and why attachment precedes instruction [24:51] – Parenting across developmental stages and the two bigs, two littles dynamic [28:01] – Why Larry found the young years hardest and came alive in the teens [29:23] – Jessica as the boy mom of empathy, affection, and don't cross me [30:29] – What repair looks like after losing patience with the kids [32:22] – Figs O'Sullivan on harmony, disharmony, and quality living in the repair [33:05] – Growing up with parents who never apologized, and breaking that cycle [35:05] – Coach Whittle's house rule: if you see the collision, you see the repair [36:12] – The deck argument Ethan witnessed and the repair he described back [38:20] – Repairing with your own parents, and the letters Apogee members are writing [41:53] – Larry's estranged mother, the milk incident, and an unsafe environment [42:37] – A father who left twice and the Starbucks reunion 18 years later [43:36] – Mason at 15 asking how he could ever forgive him [44:34] – Forgive and co-create the future, or live in the past with a grudge [46:18] – Screen time boundaries, dumb phones, and earning time through fitness [49:37] – The three page contract for an adult son living at home rent free [50:28] – Why doom scrolling infuriates Larry, and his own guilt with the work phone [57:08] – The Apogee host thanks Larry, and an early zoom happy birthday   5 Key Takeaways Protecting Kids Starts With the Marriage — The deepest safety a child feels comes from parents who prioritize each other. It's a long tail game, not a short term action, and kids who see their parents love each other feel warm, safe, and want to be home. Call Each Other Forward, Don't Tear Down — Jessica changed Larry by naming what she saw with love and respect instead of criticism, which made him want to change. That same energy, connection before correction, is exactly how they lead their sons. Without Connection You Have No Influence — Kids tune out discipline from someone they don't feel attached to. Building connection first, often through shared activity, makes every hard conversation land far better. The Relationship Lives in the Repair — Every relationship cycles through harmony, disharmony, and repair, and the quality resides in how you repair. Letting kids witness the whole cycle, including your apology, teaches them it's safe to mess up and own it. Forgiveness Is a Choice About the Future — Larry's father owned his two abandonments completely and earned a 21 year relationship, while his mother's unsafe patterns went unrepaired. You can forgive and co-create the future, or live your whole life in the past with a grudge.   Links & Resources Episode page and all links: https://thedadedge.com/1507 Dad Edge Day with the Arizona Cardinals (November 15, Cardinals vs Rams, State Farm Stadium): https://thedadedge.com/nfl Connect with Jessica Hagner: https://thedadedge.com/jessicahagner/ Larry and Jessica interview each other (part one): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_aCcKKv9pXw Larry and Jessica interview each other (part two): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XsHmnQiROMo&t=138s   Enjoyed This Episode?
