Of course Mike and James had to start with a lot of video game talk (we believe in fandom's overlap). Then Mike wonders how much AI help would be needed for the socials in the future, and how much video should figure into the podcast side. We come back to Toronto and look ahead to Anime North and beyond to the Toronto Comic Arts Festival, and the Toronto Japanese Film Festival. The first English voice of Sailor Moon is running for Toronto City Council this fall. Then, in memoriam we remember Ted Turner, Tatsuo Sato, and Koji Suzuki and their impact on our fandom over the years. And it's Mother's Day, so we talk about our Moms in our fandom. And the Queues:- Your Castle's Little Helper- Cat's Eye- Petshop of Horrors- Gals Can't Be Kind to Otaku- Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten- The Girl I Like Forgot Her Glasses- I Made Friends With the Second Prettiest Girl in Class This Week's Drinking Game: Take a shot when Mike or James make a joke that goes over the other's headMike Nicolas and James Austin——Visit our linktree for more information and links: animeroundtable.com

Comcast's Q1 earnings call delivered good news almost across the board, and Philip and Scott break down what it means for the theme parks division. Universal's theme park revenue was up 24%, driven mostly by Epic Universe doing exactly what it was supposed to do: increasing per-cap spending and length of stay across the entire Orlando resort. The one cloud on the horizon is Asia. Universal called out softening attendance in Osaka and Beijing, with China-related inbound travel pressure hitting Japan and a tougher macro environment in China. We dig into Universal Cool Japan, the 10-year-old programming slate that lets USJ rapidly overlay popular IPs like the upcoming Frieren walkthrough, and why leaning local is the right answer when international demand shrinks. Then we compare that nimble seasonal model to Universal Hollywood's FanFest Nights, the hard-ticket spring version of HHN that's leaning heavily on existing daytime IPs in year two, with One Piece and Sailor Moon doing the real work of pulling in new fans.We close on the bigger corporate picture. Theme parks are still only 7% of Comcast, and with broadband losses improving for the first time since 2020 and Peacock approaching profitability, the parks division is being treated as one of six growth drivers funding its own reinvestment rather than getting a blank check. Plus, the Iran conflict and oil prices haven't yet shown up in domestic park demand, but Comcast left the door open for that to change in Q2 and Q3.Listen to weekly BONUS episodes on our Patreon.

If you're happy, try everything. Everything we tried to make us happy includes getting close to feet, seeming downhearted, reducing the cost of sleeping, refusing an apology, not wanting to get involved, assaulting a temple with powerful waves of pure hate, owing thanks to a bishop, suppressing Rykros information, receiving a free speedboat from our girlfriend, shipping a three way, embracing happiness, pretending to hate our idiot daughters, spending our youth in prison, and ripping off Sailor Moon. Read transcriptSome magical girl stories are content with sparkly transformations and heartfelt speeches. This is not one of those stories. This time on Play Comics we're warping through the glitter-strewn chaos of Sailor Moon: Another Story, the Super Famicom RPG that took the 90s manga and anime vibes, mashed them with branching timelines and turn-based redemption arcs, and asked, “What if destiny needed a save state?” It's console combat where emotional baggage weighs more than your inventory, and every villain monologue comes with a friendship discount. Chris isn't battling cosmic paradoxes solo though. Cass Proffitt from Distant Echoes jumps into the senshi squad to help unpack how this game balances moon crystal lore with JRPG grind, and whether it's a radiant tribute to Sailor Moon or just the sparkliest timeline meltdown in gaming history. Together they're digging into what survived the trip from Naoko Takeuchi's pages to console controllers, complete with overdramatic plot twists and Jupiter's undefeated punch stat. Dust off your brooch, queue the theme song, and prepare for senshi squad analysis laced with villain rehab debates and moon prism power-ups that hit different on pixelated screens. Learn such things as: Why Another Story might actually be canon. Sort of. Maybe. How localization shaped the Western Sailor Moon fandom. What the point of it all is if you don't even have a cat to help guide you along the way. And so much more! You can find Cass on their podcast Distant Echoes. If you want to be a guest on the show please check out the Be a A Guest on the Show page and let me know what you're interested in. You can read the full thoughts from CountZeroOr here: Why we never got them? Well, I'd probably say it's a combination of a couple factors: First, for much of the 16-bit console generation (and the 8-bit console generation before that), there was still a very considerable anti-Japan bias in terms of marketing of console games, based on the idea that American audiences wouldn't buy anything actively presented as being Japanese, so Anime presentations were out (this is part of the reason why the first Ranma 1/2 fighting game was changed into “Street Combat”) – the Golgo 13 games were viewed as something of an outlier. While some later titles in the 90s would take chances on presenting themselves as being more anime (i.e. Ranma 1/2 Hard Battle), they were also titles for properties generally marketed to guys, as also around this time video game marketing was increasingly getting more gendered, something that would continue throughout the 90s and into the 2000s and beyond. As a property targeted for girls, Sailor Moon didn't fit in the gender essentialist marketing plans of the video game industry. The fact that, since it's a RPG, it also has a ton of text to localize and translate (versus to the Sailor Moon beat-em-ups), certainly didn't help. The next episode is going to be Uncanny X-Men. That's right, we're taking another look at the NES game. What are your experiences with this one? If they remade it today what characters would you want included that weren't in the original? If you want to help support the show check out the Play Comics Patreon page or head over to the Support page if you want to go another route. You can also check out the Play Comics Merch Store. If you want to hear Chris talk with Karrington Martin about the lessons we learned from children's media and how crazy it is that we're supposed to just forget about that now that we're adults, then Sugar, Spite, and Everything is Fine is probably something you should check out. The list of April Fools' jokes on official anime/manga Twitter accounts, The Super Mario Galaxy movie is still breaking records, and Artemis watches over the latest NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration mission! Also, TOKYOPOP offers public stock shares, Pokémon teams with IKEA for collaboration events, and Sailor Moon creator Naoko Takeuchi cheers on her husband with April-themed crossover art! Meanwhile in Japan, a new cafe's average staff age is 73, a man was arrested for walking on Shinkansen tracks, and a man died after biting a woman at a park!
Show Notes 0:00: With a LOT of Winter anime shows to discuss, Justin and Helen delve right into the news of the past few weeks, starting with…something weird! But also something very bad, as a manga based off a light novel series has been suspended because the artist decided to plagiarize, and it was egregious enough that the editorial department had to put out a statement about it. 2:32: Aniplex and Crunchyroll’s new anime production venture, HAYATE Inc, has acquired studio Lay-duce; Kageki Shojo!! author Kumiko Saiki was injured at a music festival she went to a few weeks ago, and we’re all hoping she’s ok, as the injuries could be serious (diagnosed with a sprained neck, getting a CT scan to check if her brain is bleeding) 7:09: George Morikawa will be on break due to his hospitalization a few weeks ago, so no Hajime no Ippo for a while; Tawawa on Monday will be on a two-month break and see a return to Kodansha's Weekly Young Magazine May 25. 7:51: The two hosts discuss the passing of manga creator Rakko due to heart failure, and the circumstances as well. Licenses 9:51: Yen Press has launched a new imprint: Avocado House! (Both hosts wonder how they came up with it). Appears they’ll be having strictly international novels for this imprint (to give them options + have a clear delineation from Yen On), and they’ve launched with the following works: Keigo Higashino's Laplace’s Witch Yūki Shasendō's Sickness unto Love Gyatei Murasaki's 1,000 Words Left to Live Aya Saitō's The Curse Called Mother, the Prison Called Daughter Haeyeon Jeong's The Place of the Flamingo Yen Press also had some announcements at their Sakuracon panel: Ryoko Kui’s The Dragon School Is Atop the Mountain Natsuki Takaya’s In Such a Small World Neruko Nichinichi’s Non and Akari Futa Kimura’s Fate Rewinder: All Great Feats Require Time Hikaru Sakurai, Tsuta Suzuki, & TYPE-MOON’s Fate/Prototype: Fragments of Sky Silver 21g & Tegekiken’s Elden Ring: Become Lord Mio Tatsumoto’s Meiji-Era Master-and-Servant Tungsten Pieta’s How to Keep a Human 14:18: After their April Fools’ Wonderful Wednesday event, Seven Seas made official announcements this time: Yoichi Sayonaka & Ryuta Yanagi's Gear × Magic: Reincarnated as an Engineer, I’ll Save the Villainous Princess (Airship) Ryūto & Heiro's The Faceless Mercenary Wants to Settle Down: Homestead at the Edge of the Galaxy (Airship, digital only) Yū Omiya, Yōhei Kazawa, & Ale's My Girlfriend Cheated on Me, and Now My Flirty Underclassman Won't Leave Me Alone manga Indosō, Yasuumi's Building a Monster Girl Harem with Forbidden Science (Ghost Ship) Yog Akase's Nono’s Phantom Shop 15:34: Dark Horse took the time to have a manga licensing event themselves, and here’s what they’ll be releasing this year: Rin Suzukawa’s Asobi Asobase Kenji Tsuruta’s Forget-me-not Kouji Mori’s Suicide Island Hiromasa Okujima’s Babanba Banban Vampire 17:00: A few more Manga Mavericks titles will be arriving this year; Alien Books will also have a couple titles coming this Fall season; We’ll have an audiobook version of The Apothecary Diaries sometime this year, but will it involve the English voice of Maomao? We shall soon see! 21:31: And finally, while not quite licenses, the two hosts talk about the now updated Bookwalker service, which both (especially Helen) tested as this episode was recording. She found some concerns. Justin also had concerns, but he had them before the podcast episode though! Streaming News 29:03: Not a bunch of streaming news this time, but the hosts had to note how awkward this streaming business can be see — see Ichijōma Mankitsu Gurashi!, which can be seen in a couple places…that also includes Rakuten VIKI. Rakuten VIKI? The drama service? Main Topic: Winter 2026 Final Impressions 31:54: Justin and Helen spend a bunch of time talking about what was ultimately a very strong Winter anime season. There were still lowlights (Roll Over and Die! [43:00] being one that needed a much better fate), but overall there was lots to be impressed by (Fate/Strange Fake, You and I Are Polar Opposites S1, Sentenced to be a Hero, Tamon’s B-Side to name a few). …Butttttt Journal with Witch (32:04) was clearly the best anime of the winter season. Did the hosts (especially Justin) do their best to make it seem like it wasn’t (1:42:12)? You can guess the answer is no! Weird News 1:58:20: There is joy in seeing a work you like get animated and then be either a massive success or moderately successful enough to get multiple sequels. But we live in a world where joy can be fleeting. And for Ascendance of a Bookworm and generative A.I. to be in the same sentence is not a fate you’d want to wish for most things! 2:05:58: Good ole’ mistranslation strikes again, as somehow a collaboration announcement involving Fate/Grand Order and Witch of the Holy Night…involves Madoka Magica? Thanks Grok! 2:07:07: Justin and Helen discuss Netflix, after repeated memes and coordinated attacks on all of their socials by JoJo fans, finally revealed a schedule for Steel Ball Run, which should slow things down…(probably not!); it was actually discussed in the Winter Final impressions section, but Justin had to also shout it here — if you call yourself a final season, that means final! Not an extra arc announced since it basically means it’s not a final season! 2:10:16: Generally speaking, for a franchise to get their work concluded in anime form is very special, so congratulations to the Date A Live franchise as it seems like the next anime project will presumably wrap the series up. But it’s now going to go onto its fifth studio in Fugaku, which is a lot of effort to get this series completed in anime form! 2:12:15: There’s a plan the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry has involving anime, manga, and games and how the overseas market will play a role in it — both hosts say good luck; a surprising error occurred on the Japanese digital side that stated DANDADAN would go on break for a month, but the editor announced it was a misprint. 2:13:55: Cute things are happening, and they involved Sailor Moon! First with Artemis II (yes, the one that just went into space) and Sailor Moon’s Artemis being spotted at the CAPCOM desk in Mission Control, and then with Hunter x Hunter creator Yoshihiro Togashi and Naoko Takeuchi combining for a drawing, which also has Artemis and also Kurapika and Sailor Mars in one image. Happy February, Bunheads! Between the winter storm that ravaged the American Northeast to the 2026 Winter Olympics having just kicked off in Milano, this episode truly could NOT be more on the nose. The Olympics are only halfway through, and we've already got enough figure skating drama to write several books on (see the Ice Dance final results!).In this episode of SAILOR T, Devon & Beau discuss Episode 39 of Sailor Moon: "Paired with a Monster: Mako, the Ice Skating Queen" or "Ice Princess" in the DiC dub. Beau expounds greatly and passionately on his (albeit limited!) knowledge of the world of figure skating, breaking down the references made here in this episode and connects them to what we can concurrently expect to see in these 2026 Olympic Games as they are happening!Stay warm and stay safe, Bunheads. Continuing to bring new guests to the podcast, Rizuki and I connect after following each other for quite some time on social media. I'm a fan of the work she does in the realm of Cosplay, and she is one of the co-hosts of Eternal Mooncast. We start off our conversation with none other than the one named Sailor Moon. From how Rizuki used to watch it in the mornings while getting ready for school, to the various iterations of the show that she's watched (along with the dialogue/story choices that had been made!). We talk about her favorites series, her favorite Sailor Scout, and the longevity of the franchise in the world of anime and Cosplay. Rizuki and I then switch gears to talking about video games. We cover a lot of ground with video games. From talking about her love of the Pokemon franchise, to JRPG's like Skies of Arcadia, and her deep obsession with Sonic the Hedgehog. Rizuki is down for Sonic in all versions and all generations of video game console. We also talk about how games hook her, how she can get fixated on games, and what games she's looking forward to in 2026. Then, we get to Cosplay. Rizuki talks about how she first got interested in Cosplay. We talk about the Play in Cosplay, and how having fun is important to remember. She talks about some of her favorite cosplays she's done, her goal to do all the Sailor fuku's, and what she's working on for this year with some larger group collaborations. We also talk about Eternal Mooncast, the Sailor Moon live stream / podcast that you can catch, where she and her other co-hosts discuss all the Sailor Moon you could want, and have guests on as well! Natalie is joined by new friend Cetoria to get into the girl powered world that is Sailor Moon. They will talk about how the show represents the energy that is being a teenage girl. Within the conversation surrounding Sailor Moon, they will also talk about the hierarchy of girlhood and how they experienced girlhood as young women and ways they're reclaiming it today. They'll also discuss other treasured franchises that were celebrating young women while they were growing up.How to Support TATMITB:Want more TATMITB content? "A Night Alone Together: Usagi in Danger" (August 17, 1996) In our fourth look at Sailor Moon, we're discussing the final season, which features the Sailor Stars. Canonically, they're female superheroes who magically become boys in order to remain in disguise, and as a result some Sailor Moon fans consider them to be trans-coded or metaphorically transgender. It's not really for us to say one way or another, but there's enough discussion about how to discuss these characters' gender that it made sense to cover this episode. Will it be the last?
