Hear from Gordon Bennett, Managing Director at ICE, as we dive into theory and practice of carbon pricing and its important role in driving the transition to net zero. Carbon pricing is the poster child of market-based solutions to climate change. The principle is simple: by assigning a cost to greenhouse gas emissions, we incentivize polluters to emit less, and to do so in the most cost-effective way. But there's a significant gap between the theory and practice. Currently, only 24% of global emissions – about 12.8 gigatonnes – are covered by pricing mechanisms such as carbon taxes or cap-and-trade. On top of that, just half a gigatonne was traded in voluntary markets last year. Clearly, there's still a long way to go. In this episode, we explore the carbon pricing gap, including: Why it exists, what's needed to close it; The integrity challenges facing voluntary carbon markets, and how to address them; And how central counterparties can help drive the transition by ensuring transparent, reliable pricing. In this “Secure in Mind” podcast episode, we welcome John W.H. Denton, the Secretary General of the International Chamber of Commerce. John brings a wealth of international insight on economic and international development A former Diplomat and member of the Australian Federal Government's Strategic Advisory Board on the implementation of emerging policy issues, John Denton now resides in France, heading the International Chamber of Commerce on all matters of Trade, Commerce, Economic and International Development, Business and Trade Disputes. John also sits on the Board of the UN Global Impact and is Chair Emeritus at the Business Council of Australia's Global Engagement Task Force. To reinforce the strong ties between business and governance, he founded the B20, the business movement associated with the G20. The International Chamber of Commerce's role in bringing peace and prosperity During our discussion, we explore the ICC's mission – to bring stability, growth and security worldwide by enabling business and trade globally – and how the organisation realises this in practical and applied terms. We consider the regulatory and enforcement responsibility and capability of the International Chamber of Commerce, which is not only charged with setting standards and norms but also with enforcing them. In fact, the world's leading private arbitral body is actually the ICC court of arbitration – so settling major cross-border, nation-influenced issues makes up a large portion of the ICC's remit. Finally, John gave us precious insights on how a good governance and robust legislative framework can enable and ensure prosperity and security at multiple levels worldwide. His words were illuminating; partly as a result of the privileged observation right the ICC has by holding a seat at the UN General Assembly. The Secure in Mind Project Our mission is to greatly increase and encourage community discussion about technological and ethical issues that have done, are and will impact society on a global scale. There is a longstanding and distinct disconnect between the way information is packaged and presented to the public and the effectiveness of this presentation in terms of generating informed, considered debate. If we can take complex, important topics and present them, as best we can, in a manner that can interests people from outside the speciality, then we have surpassed our expectations. Nick Kelly Bio Nick is someone who, in many senses, is just like you: a human being trying to make sense of this existence of ours as we hurtle around a ball of gas in a sea of infinite eternity. More relevant though are his vacillations in the world amongst diverse countries and environments, collaborating, negotiating, elaborating and celebrating with fascinating people from all walks of life including politics, technology, activism, military and intelligence the world over. He brings this unique breadth of perspective to the table and has a dogged interest in pursuing the human story behind the title or policy, appreciating the fact that underneath all of our bravado, political correctness and dichotomous states of creation and destruction, we are, after all, merely mortals trying to make the best of it.

Orange County-based medical diagnostic company Fluxergy has taken the next step toward getting a high-speed test for COVID-19 available for use. Fluxergy submitted an emergency use authorization request to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Center For Devices and Radiological Health, seeking an authorization that would permit medical professionals to begin using the company’s test system as a COVID-19 diagnostic at the point-of-care. Advanced rapid point-of-care tests for COVID-19 may have the potential to save significant time compared to standard lab tests that must be shipped to centralized laboratories for processing. Fluxergy’s on-site sample- to-answer test for COVID-19 requires a very small sample, typically a nasal swab, which is mixed with a reagent solution, loaded onto a card and inserted into the analyzer in a two-step procedure. In this episode of DeviceAlliance’s Medtech Radio we with speak CCO of Fluxergy, Dr. Ali Tinazli. He also serves as Business Partner & Strategy Advisor with Immunaccel, and is a Member of the Strategic Advisory Board of InnVentis Ltd. Join us as we discuss Fluxergy's goal to make laboratory testing accessible everywhere, the challenges facing current labs, and how our current environment is acting as a catalyst for the next generation of medical device innovation.

Noha Waibsnaider is a leading food entrepreneur and change maker in the healthy, real food movement. After graduating from Columbia Business School, she worked at Unilever and learned about the preservatives, chemicals, and processing that fills most of our foods. Originally from Israel, Noha grew up on a diet of mostly unprocessed foods and snacking on dried fruit. She realized there was a big gap in the marketplace and an opportunity to create snacks that make people feel good about snacking, with food that tastes great and is naturally nutritious. In 2005, she launched Peeled Snacks: organic fruit snacks with no added sugar or preservatives. In the last year, the brand has quickly evolved to a larger healthy snack platform, with the launch of Peas Please, savory veggie snacks. With her vision of providing tasty and nourishing snacks everywhere you need a snack, Peeled Snacks are sold in Starbucks, Target, Whole Foods, Wegmans, Giant, Hudson News, Amazon, and many other retailers. The company has ranked on the Inc. 5000 List of America’s Fastest Growing Companies for four years, has been featured in Oprah’s O List, and received Healthy Snack awards from Health Magazine and Fitness Magazine. [02:25] - When did you start your own business and what was your background? [02:40] - I learned about the food industry and supply chain. Realized that the products were loaded with sugar and chemical. I will talk to the scientists and they are not willing to eat it! [03:10] - There’s an opportunity to make real food that’s not highly processed and make it accessible to people. [03:30] - People have been eating dry food for a number of years. [05:28] - Product-based businesses have so much to consider upfront. In terms of operations, what did you start with? [06:12] - There’s a very large based eco-system for food-based products now. [07:40] - We started small. The early challenges, limitations and constraints are what helped you define the concept. [06:26] - It’s an evolution and part of the creative process. [09:00] - How much money did you invest upfront? [10:00] - I sent in a two-page application for funding but was not successful. [11:03] - Initially, I thought it’s a small business and it can be self-funded. I was using credit card and doing balance transfer. Started borrowing money from family - started fund-raising with friends and family. [13:09] - Since then we continued to raise money from Angels and crowd-funding. [16:08] - What is your pricing strategy? It’s important to get pricing structure right early on. We have premium products and we increased the price gradually and people were still willing to pay for. At least 50% margin. [19:55] - How does the Strategic Advisory Board work? [20:14] - Network is “give and take”. At one point we gave stock options to people. [21:43] - My first strategic advisory board guru was a business school professor. His biggest piece of advice was – “you’re going to need an advisory board and I volunteer to be the first member on it”. That was very helpful. [24:07] - Those on our board have very diverse business backgrounds. [26:10] - How do you get access to influential people like Stacy Madison? [27:06] - Building relationship, meeting people, networking, going to industry events, asking what you need and being clear of what you need. [27:47] - If you could go back, what are the 3 things that you would have invested in most? Golf lessons! – so much of networking happens on the golf-course. Marketing Gone into it with a long-term view and not so overwhelmed by all the ups and downs. [31:27] - What motivates you to keep you going? There’s always a light at the end of the tunnel. Passionate about what I do, i.e. healthy food, food that energizes and what our brand stands for. Consumer’s feedback. There’s no tracking back, we have to give returns back to our investors. [33:54] - What are things to learn, unlearn and relearn from your corporate background to your own business? When I was at a large company, I had access to so much data. At Peeled Snacks we did not have any. Being responsible for your own space and schedule. It’s a totally different level of stress – managing emotions. 3 KEY POINTS The more the business grows, the more money is needed. Network is “give & take”. Be passionate about what you do.
