We remember one of the most sought-after directors in television, James Burrows. He died June 19 at age 85. Burrows worked on many classic sitcoms including ‘Taxi,' ‘Frasier,' ‘Friends,' ‘Will and Grace' and ‘Cheers.' He was known for his comedic instincts, his visual style, and for insisting the comedy be believable. Burrows spoke with Terry Gross in 2006. Also, we hear an appreciation from TV critic and historian David Bianculli. Film critic Justin Chang reviews ‘The Invite,' starring Seth Rogen and Olivia Wilde. Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho forever changed movie history with one shocking scene, but novelist Leah Rowan asks a tantalizing question: what if Marion Crane had survived? In her debut thriller, 'Marion,' Rowan reimagines one of cinema's most famous victims as a woman who fights back, setting off a suspenseful story of survival, revenge, and reinvention.A modern, feminist twist on a classic, the novel blends psychological suspense with sharp social commentary as Marion flees the aftermath of a deadly encounter while trying to save her sister from an abusive marriage. It's a bold, unexpected retelling that turns a familiar story on its head.

Last week in Brussels, EU leaders held their first sustained debate on China policy in three years, and were so wary of Beijing's reaction they wouldn't print the word “China” on the agenda. The trigger: a goods-trade deficit closing in on 360 billion euros, and, for the first time ever, all 27 member states in the red. Recorded at Summer Davos in Dalian, I sat down with economic historian Adam Tooze to ask why the panic, and why now. Polanyi, the Plaza Accord, “glut shaming,” a $1.2 trillion surplus, and what Europe and China each most need to understand about the other.04:26 – Why the alarm now? “Sound is a really important part of how I make movies because I always tell people that if the sound is good and the picture is bad, then you'll stick around to see what happens. However, if the sound is terrible and the picture is great, you're out of there in like ten minutes. So sound is something that I always cherish. And I think that the right filmmaker who appreciates sound can really take advantage of what we think about and use, you know, the viewer's imagination. A lot of film pictures start off in black and, you know, they just have the sound, so they really grab the audience's attention right from the beginning. So sound is just such a powerful medium.” – Jayson JohnsonThis week's guest is a filmmaker and the founder of Strike Five Films, an independent production company dedicated to authentic, character-driven storytelling. A graduate of Eastern Illinois University, he began his career under the mentorship of Francis Ford Coppola, working on the Wine, Daydreams & Memories tour before producing over 1,400 hours of broadcast television for Discovery ID. Since founding Strike Five Films in 2017, he's written, directed, and produced nine short films that have screened at more than ninety festivals worldwide, earning six awards. His work has been featured in numerous media outlets and is defined by themes of perseverance, community, and creativity. He's currently in pre-production on his debut feature, R.O.G.E.R & Me, an offbeat, heartfelt film rooted in Richmond, CA, while continuing to mentor emerging filmmakers and expand his mission of fusing storytelling, social impact, and independent artistry. His name is Jayson Johnson, and if you've ever wondered how intentional sound can elevate storytelling and make a lasting impact on audiences, you won't want to miss Jayson's behind-the-scenes insights and practical tips.As always, if you have questions for my guest, you're welcome to reach out through the links in the show notes. I would so appreciate that.(00:00) – How Sound Captivates AudiencesWe start things off with the vivid impression sound made on Jayson as a child, and how it led him to a career in filmmaking. “One of the memories I have as a child,” he recalls, “is, you know, you're sound asleep, and then all of a sudden, the vacuum cleaner goes on… that was kind of like an alarm clock for us, you know, because we always had chores.” He tells us more about his influences growing up and how a lifelong love of movies became a calling. “When I went to college,” he explains, “I had no idea what I wanted to do, so I signed up with Speech Communication, and they had a discipline of Radio, TV, and Film. And I just tried out everything.”(11:27) – Sound Techniques in FilmmakingJayson tells us more about his early years in the industry and how a chance job opening led to an encounter with Sofia and Francis Ford Coppola. “I put out all these resumes, I don't even know how many I put out,” he tells us. “Probably a hundred or so. No one called me except for this one place, and I said, ‘Oh, it's a winery. I'll go there.' And it happened to be Francis Coppola Winery.” He recalls his work on Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette, and the lessons about sound that Marin Scorsese's classic Goodfellas taught him to apply to his own films. “We see the cars explode,” he explains, “and Scorsese wants the audience to feel the emotion of that scene by not saying anything and just adding that little pause in there and, you know, letting the audience feel the gravity of the moment.”Episode SummaryExploring how silence enhances emotional depth in storytelling.Jayson discusses the sound techniques he's used in his films.Tune in for next week's episode as we talk about how music can transform a film, both for better and for worse, his thoughts about the emergence of AI videos and virtual celebrities like Tilly Norwood, and why he considers sound to be the first step in his creative process as a filmmaker.Connect with the Audio Branding Podcast:Book your project with Voice Overs and Vocals by visiting https://voiceoversandvocals.comConnect with me on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/jodikrangle/Watch the Audio Branding Podcast on YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/c/JodiKrangleVOConnect with me on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/jodikrangle/Leave the Audio Branding Podcast a review at https://lovethepodcast.com/audiobranding (Thank you!)Share your passion effectively with these Tips for Sounding Your Best as a Podcast Guest!https://voiceoversandvocals.com/tips-for-sounding-your-best-as-a-podcast-guest/Get my Top Five Tips for Implementing an Intentional Audio Strategyhttps://voiceoversandvocals.com/audio-branding-strategy/Editing/Production by Humberto Franco - https://humbertofranco.com/This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: OP3 - https://op3.dev/privacy

This week, we revisit a franchise that has seen not only a fresh pair of installments, but a refreshed resonance to cultural themes. Filmed directly after 28 Years Later, THE BONE TEMPLE picks up where the previous film left off with Spike (Alfie Williams) now having been integrated into the cultish and terrifying group led by "Sir" Jimmy Crystal (in a haunting performance by Jack O'Connell). They make their way across the landscape, slaughtering the infected and offering a hideous "charity" to any passersby they encounter. But when the group intersects with the benevolent Dr. Kelson (Ralph Fiennes), a confrontation is staged that will position belief, purpose, and the very essence of humanity at odds with malice, deceit, and cruelty. The film points a grim eye towards our darkest nature and unearths a disarming capacity for redemption. Nathan is joined again by Kate Micham (who guested with him discussing 28 Years Later) for an exploration of the film's rich themes and the ways it informs the too-little discussed discipline of discernment. Also featuring a Patron-only chat about the Apple TV hit series WIDOW'S BAY, this is a brisk and thoughtful conversation that we really hope you enjoy.Patron Only Segment: WIDOW'S BAY3:25 - 28 YEARS LATER: THE BONE TEMPLESee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Noyer on filmmaking, Tax Incentives, Folk Horror, and Directing Love is the Monster What do you do when your folk horror film is deeply rooted in Finnish mythology, but the financing dictates you have to shoot it in Canada? You adapt, you pivot, and you get your movie made. This week on The Filmmakers Podcast, Giles Alderson sits down with returning guest, writer-director, and genre champion Alex Noyer (Sound of Violence) to unpack the production of his latest feature, the creature-feature folk horror Love is the Monster. Starring Madeline Zima and Leonardo Nam, the film follows a toxic couple whose trip to a remote wellness retreat plunges them into a deadly mythological ritual. Alex strips back the curtain on the grueling reality of independent film financing, sharing the exact strategic choices that moved his production across the globe to secure the best tax rebates possible.

Erin Brockovich (2000) (directed by Steven Soderbergh) is based on the true story of Erin Brockovich, a legal assistant without formal training, who uncovers one of the most significant environmental lawsuits in U.S. history: the case against Pacific Gas and Electric for contaminating groundwater in Hinkley, California. The film, which features an Oscar-winning performance by Julia Roberts in the title role, explores the role of lawsuits in exposing truth and gaining compensation for victims, the gendered dynamics of legal advocacy, and the challenges of taking on entrenched power structures in society.Timestamps:0:00 Introduction1:59 Who is Erin Brockovich?3:11 Obstacles to holding corporations accountable5:49 How Erin Brockovich overcomes those obstacles8:10 Imbalance of power and resources14:40 Hinkley, California18:00 Accessing records21:16 Tort reform, punitive damages, and proportionality27:10 States and environmental regulation32:22 Causation and attribution science37:30 Whistleblowers 41:17 Finding the “smoking gun”42:53 The practice of law and parentingFurther reading:Banks, Sedina “The ‘Erin Brockovich Effect': How Media Shapes Toxics Policy,” 26 Environs Env't L. Just as Tom Cruise embarked on his run of Mission: Impossible and Top Gun sequels, he slipped in one of bolder choices too: an R-rated crime caper, based on a true story. Originally called Mena before being retitled American Made, the shoot saw the writer, director and star of the film living in the same house. It also saw wildly ambitious flying sequences, a tragic accident, a challenge when selling the film and a whole lot more.... Please subscribe to this show if you like it and leave a nice review.
