Karen Ross, 76, is a champion who keeps reinventing herself. Self-confident, curious and proactive, Karen never stops finding new ways to stay involved, support herself and others, and meet interesting people. She thought she would be a musician and entered college intending to major in music. However, Broadway show music is what interested her and classical music was what the college preferred she study. It didn't take long for Karen to move on and several years and careers later found herself hosting a radio show. When that show ended she moved to South Carolina. "Curiosity leads me to keep engaging in new topics, career choices, and environments."A change in formats sent her back to Chicago where she decided to hire a coach to help her find what was next. The coach noticed that she was always desirous to be of service and, so, suggested she become a coach.Soon after starting her practice, Karen discovered hypnosis, believing it could help her patients find deep relaxation and access to their subconscious minds, while eradicating chronic pain, sleep issues and major loss. She continues to this day working with clients who benefit from hypnosis and personal coaching. Karen pays close attention to her health, doing a daily practice called Aging Backwards. The universe often presents us with the most unexpected yet profound gifts. On today's episode, we welcome Tero Isokauppila, a Finnish visionary and 13th-generation farmer with an extraordinary passion for mushrooms. As Tero often jests, "Mushrooms chose me, I didn't choose mushrooms," and it's this serendipitous journey that has transformed him into a leading advocate for the myriad benefits fungi offer.Growing up in Finland on a farm steeped in agricultural heritage, Tero Isokauppila was no stranger to the natural world. His father, an agronomist, and his mother, a physiology and anatomy teacher, imbued him with a deep understanding of health and wellness. It was his mother's teachings about foraging mushrooms that sparked a lifelong fascination. This intrigue blossomed further when Tero discovered a rare mushroom and won an innovation award, marking the beginning of his path to becoming a spokesperson for fungi. In our conversation, Tero delves into the profound connection humans share with fungi. He illuminates the similarities between humans and mushrooms, noting, "Humans and fungi share a lot of DNA, which makes fungal medicine more bioavailable to us." This intrinsic link is not merely biological but extends into the metaphysical, suggesting a deeper symbiosis within the web of life. One of the cornerstones of Tero's advocacy is the health benefits of functional mushrooms. He explains that mushrooms like reishi, chaga, and lion's mane are powerhouses for gut health, immunity, and cognitive function. Tero highlights, "Reishi mushroom is known as the Queen of Mushrooms, praised for its stress-relieving properties and support for the immune system." Such attributes make these fungi indispensable allies in our pursuit of health and longevity.SPIRITUAL TAKEAWAYSInterconnectedness of Life: The biological similarities between humans and fungi reflect a deeper interconnectedness in nature. Recognizing this can enhance our appreciation of the natural world and our place within it.Holistic Health: Functional mushrooms like reishi and lion's mane support not just physical health but also mental and emotional well-being, offering a holistic approach to wellness.Embrace the Unexpected: Tero's journey underscores the beauty of embracing life's unexpected paths. Often, the greatest gifts are those we never sought but found us nonetheless.Tero also shares the significance of lion's mane mushroom, renowned for its cognitive benefits. "Lion's mane can penetrate the blood-brain barrier, providing essential nutrients that support brain health," he explains. This unique capability makes it a potent tool for enhancing mental clarity and focus, an essential aspect of navigating the complexities of modern life.Beyond the biological and health benefits, Tero's narrative is a testament to the power of passion and perseverance. Starting his company, Four Sigmatic, in a foreign land with no prior business experience, Tero faced numerous challenges. Yet, his unwavering belief in the potential of mushrooms to transform health kept him steadfast. He recounts, "We did everything wrong, but by doing so, we found a path that was uniquely ours."The journey of Tero Isokauppila is not just about mushrooms; it's about the symbiotic relationship between passion, purpose, and the natural world. His story encourages us to explore the hidden corners of life, where the most profound discoveries often lie.In conclusion, Tero's insights offer a refreshing perspective on health and well-being, rooted in the ancient wisdom of nature. As we integrate these learnings into our lives, we move closer to a state of balance and harmony with the world around us.Please enjoy my conversation with Tero Isokauppila.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/next-level-soul-podcast-with-alex-ferrari--4858435/support.

Most of us hate small talk, but are we to blame? Would people really prefer to discuss their hopes and dreams instead of the weather?Imagine if the government offered you the chance to take a year or two off your official age. It just happened in one country. This week represents the Fourth of July holiday season - and as soon as it passes, the countless fireworks tents you see each day will retreat back into hibernation until next year. Where do they come from?  Where do they go? We called an expert to get the inside  (and gross) details on working at a seasonal fireworks tent. In this week's episode, I sit down with the supple leopard, Steve Vierra. I first met Steve almost 10 years ago, where we both worked at the Oakland Police Dept. Steve is exactly 50.7 years old, but he looks and moves like a 25 year old. Steve is a huge health nut, a former bodybuilder, movement specialist, and health expert, and has so much wisdom to offer, I figured it was time to have him on the show.As a police officer, Steve is expected to be a ‘tactical athlete,” but as we all know, many police officers fall victims to early retirements, due to stress, herniated discs, heart attacks, cancer, etc. One of the things that I think has made Steve age so gracefully and avoid all these common pitfalls seen by most officers is his mindset. Police work is such a negative profession, that only sees the worst in people, and is completely thankless. It's easy to become jaded and hardened. Not Steve. He always finds the good in something and looks for the opportunity where others aren't.Steve also makes his body his top priority. Steve expresses this thru movement and has taken many courses and many certifications to learn more about the way the body is supposed to move. After a short career in bodybuilding, and tearing his quad, and seeing numerous doctors, Steve talks about this journey thru health and how he never was satisfied with one person's opinion because “he knew his body” better than any doctor. Steve talks a lot about how awareness is the key to getting over most injuries, but most people lack that completely. Steve also shares his supplements and daily routines, especially important for first responders that get little to no sleep and work shift work. He's an avid biohacker, and regularly intermittent fasts, throws and carries kegs for muscle building, does cold plunges and infrared sauna, and much more. If you're looking to optimize your health, there's a lot you can look from Steve's philosophy and approach. Player FM - Internet Radio Done Right

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Zen(ish) Mommy Podcast! There are so many names, and so many functions for the range of anti-aging aesthetics on offer today. While we can't stop Father Time from knocking on our door, many of us want to slow the aging process and age as gracefully as possible. Whatever your pain tolerance and need, there seems to be something for everyone. But sometimes that can make it even harder to find what works for you! Today's guest, Merry Thornton, is a skincare expert here to help today's listeners navigate the options on offer today. She is the founder of Element Medical Aesthetics, a premier medical spa in New Canaan, Connecticut, with a wealth of wisdom about which treatments work best, and an additive approach to preventative and restorative skincare. With the aim to help her patients to look like the best possible version of themselves, she generously shares her knowledge with us here today. Key Points From This Episode:An introduction to today's guest, Merry Thornton, with Element Medical Aesthetics. How she got involved in medical and aesthetic dermatology before starting her business. The role of filler and lasers in combination with surgery. Why women have become more honest about what they have had done.Where aesthetics fits into the continuum of makeup, hair dye, and more. The additive approach she takes with procedures. Why she recommends starting botox when you are young. Why the goal is to make you look like the best version of yourself instead of someone else. The size of a syringe of filler: only enough to fill a blueberry!Fast botox metabolizers and how long you can generally expect your treatment to last. The correlation between dosage and duration. Why product selection is so important on different parts of the face.Which products Merry is loving the most on the face.A recommendation never to try to insert your own filler. Why you shouldn't take advice on drugs that are invested or inhaled via social media. Why it is better to be preventative than corrective.Sunscreen and why you should use it everyday of the year. The daytime protect and nighttime repair routines she encourages. What brings Merry inner peace including nature, taking a bath, and coloring with her kids. Why it is so important to get sufficient sleep, eat healthily, and take care of our health.Living free of judgment and embracing what boosts your confidence.Tweetables:“There's always going to be a need for surgical procedures. There are certain limitations to what we do. But even if you get a facelift, that doesn't mean you shouldn't get filler or lasers because with a facelift you are repositioning tissue, but if you're lacking volume you're still going to need filler.” — Merry Thornton [0:06:20]“We want you to be the best version of yourself. We're not trying to turn you into someone else.” — Merry Thornton [0:20:01]Links Mentioned in Today's Episode:Merry Thornton on LinkedIn Merry Thornton on Instagram Element Medical Aesthetics Element Medical Aesthetics on InstagramThe Zen MommyZen Mommy InstagramZen Mommy YoutubeZen Mommy FacebookSupport the show

With more of these devices becoming available to the public we thought it would be great to educate you on them and how they work with the skin!! Today we Talk about: The aging process- reduced cell turnover and reduction in collagen production Technologies that stimulate Collagen: LED Light Therapy - Certain cells absorb light wavelengths and are stimulated to work. Red light therapy may work in skin health to: Stimulate collagen production, which gives skin its structure, strength and elasticity. Increase fibroblast production, which makes collagen. LightStim for Wrinkles - available for retail purchase from us. The rest is attributed to what you hold in your consciousness — how you view yourself and the experience of aging. What would it take for you to not only live past 100… but to thrive past 100, with good health, mental acuity, vibrant relationships, and joyful vitality? Mario will share how your biological age can actually be reversed and your longevity dramatically extended… not by changing your behavior, but by transforming the way you view yourself and the world. You can register here for 4 Factors People 100 Years & Older Share for Longevity & Radiant Living: Here are some other resource links I promised:Discover the HeartMath ExperienceInterview with Epigenetisist, Dr. Kenneth PelletierStory of a Quantum Spiritual AwakeningHow the Book Conversations with God "came" to me.In this empowering free online event, you'll discover:Why culture has more influence on your health and healing than your genes doHow to embody a different perspective through an experiential visit to “Theater of Change,” where you can alter the script about a challenge you're facing How to ignite your personal agency and perceive and act in a way that shapes your fate into destinyThat your brain and immune system are culturally formed and have a moral compass How “causes of health” are inherited, while longevity is a culturally learned consciousness that may biologically prevent physical illness and diseaseREGISTER NOW FOR:The Longevity Blueprint A science-based approach by fitness visionary Ben Greenfield, transforms how you experience aging.Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. In today's very special episode, Sheryl reflects on aging as she crosses the threshold into the next decade of life: her fifties.  We talk about what it means to “age backwards,” and we consider the question: how can we become more curious, more open, softer and lighter as the years go, rather than more rigid and calcified? Is it possible that aging is, in some ways, not as linear as we think? We unpack some of the stories and perceptions about aging that can make it difficult for us to accept and embrace the changes that come with the passage of time. Sheryl shares her thoughts on common messages about aging bodies and appearances, and how to let go of the “shoulds” we encounter in different stages of life.  Sheryl also shares how she has been spending her time lately, moving from a Shmita year into a Jubilee year: slowing down, singing, learning Hebrew, and listening closely to her body. She shares some of her intentions and hopes for the future, including a special note about reclaiming her voice and her name.  References: Mindsight by Daniel Siegel Story from Mindsight about 92 year old man who started therapy for the first time Shmita year and Jubilee year in Judaism

This is a fascinating conversation for me, as I put my body under a lot of stress during my career and am always interested in longevity and living my best life. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did, and please don’t hesitate to contact the team at TruDiagnostic if you have any questions about the fascinating things they are doing. Ryan Smith graduated with a degree in Biochemistry from the University of Transylvania. In that time, he had multiple research internships, studying large scale protein synthesis and physical chemistry. After graduation, he attended medical school at the University of Kentucky for 2 years. After finishing all the educational curriculum and passing USMLE Step 1 he decided to leave and help open up a pharmacy in the United States that focused on peptide synthesis and formulations for pharmaceutical preparations. Since that time, Tailor Made compounding has become the 4th fastest growing company in healthcare and 21st fastest growing business in the US. Tailor Made Compounding was the first pharmacy to offer an extensive list of peptides in the US and continues research and expansion for the use of these products for the integrative medicine space. Since then, Ryan has opened many businesses including TruDiagnostic, a company focusing on methylation array based diagnostics for life extension and preventive healthcare.   More about Ryan and TruDiagnostic here: https://trudiagnostic.com/ @ryansmith_PMed https://www.a4m.com/ryan-smith.html   Previous Episode with Ryan: Muscle Intelligence #101 A deep-dive on peptides with expert Ryan Smith Mentioned: Book: Dr. David Sinclair - LifespanPodcast: A New Perspective on Aging: How to Optimize the Quality of your Lifespan with Dr. David Sinclair Podcast: Optimize Your Life the Philosopher’s Way with Brian Johnson  Podcast: Exploring Epigenetics and Optimizing Health in Times of Stress with Dr. Dan Stickler Sponsor: BUBS Naturals - you know I love their products just as much as I enjoy working with them - an amazing company, that is always giving back. Is it possible for humans to extend their life span, possible even to reverse aging altogether? 'Superhuman' by Dave Asprey is his explanation of how we can increase our life span and stop the aging process. His approach is scientifically driven and he delves deeply into the research to back up his claims. The main themes of the book are on the Seven Pillars of aging that contribute to our decline and the simple interventions that can be used to stop this process.Juan summarised the book as follows. "It is a goddamn technical book. There was a page or two where he got very specific and detailed that I just had to skip by. A lot of information and takeaways but you have to work for them. The book is well written and Dave himself comes across as a funny and likeable guy, when he is not deep diving into the actual science. I felt like there was plenty of practical and implementable techniques to use for myself."As always, we hope you enjoy, Mere Mortals out!Timeline:(0:00) - Synopsis(1:58) - Structure of the book(4:34) - Heavy on the science(5:51) - Key takeaways(11:55) - Final thoughtsConnect with Mere Mortals:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/meremortalspodcast/

You know how the old saying that the “Two Inevitables” are taxes and aging? Well, what if aging, at least as we know it, wasn’t a given? This show, with one of the world’s experts on anti-aging. Dave Asprey,  is a super dynamic interview about extending your life. Dave is a genius, agile thinker and you get to hear his effective, distinctive array of science-based anti-aging tools. Dave Asprey has used specific nutrients and off-label use of medications, to pull himself back from being a 300 lb. extremely unhealthy younger male, to now being a middle-aged much more youthful dynamic incomparable male. He did this by “bio-hacking”. In fact, Dave helped put this term—“biohacking”—in Webster’s dictionary and on our human radar. Bio-hacking is using tools to hack our DNA so we can improve our genes, moving them toward living longer better. Dave shares with the world his idea that aging is plastic, that it’s encoded. “If something is encoded, you can crack the code.” “If you can crack the code, you can hack the code!” Governments like China and Russia are investing in “Anti-aging Technologies” as they realize it gives them tremendous competitive advantage? Why shouldn’t you do the same? This show tells how. In this powerful dialogue between colleagues and friends, you learn: What is biohacking? How you might live longer but do it much like you did in your 20’s. How to use nutrients to keep your tissues and brain younger longer. Which off-label medications “turn on” your brain mitochondria and immune system healing powers, so your lysosomes can clear “pro-aging gunk” out of your cells. You will learn what lysosomes are, and how and why to take care of them. You will learn exact tools to be rich in energy. Energy is everything. Energy is the true currency of life. That it’s not how long you sleep but how well you sleep. The Keck School of Medicine and the American Cancer Society looked at over 1 million adults 30 to 102, how they slept and their mortality rates and those that slept 6.5 hours lived longer and those that slept 8 hours a night died earlier from all causes! Atypical sleep improving hormones and medications! Dr. Berkson asked Dave, “How can you say in the book that you will live to be 185 years old?”  Dave answered, “At least 185 years old!” Dave then explains, in detail, exactly how he is living toward that reality every single day. Dr. Berkson read Super Human at least three times, underlining many pearls guiding us toward a safer, younger future. She proclaimed, "Super Human is one of the best reads I’ve devoured in years". This is “must-hear” show and a “must-read” book, perfect read for those wanting to know how to be the best that they can possibly be. Super Human has almost 500 peer review citations. It’s based on research but comes from that unique virtuoso Asprey special deep dive. Biohacking is not just for the ultra-rich or CEO’s of Google - but for you and me. This book should be on your shelves and the information guiding your purchasing of supplements and prescriptions. This year, for the first time, there will be more people on Earth over the age of sixty-five than under the age of five. We need biohacking. You and I need this information and need to take actions based on it. Do not miss out on this show or book! And don’t miss out on all the other very cool and life enhancing tools from Dave Asprey from Bulletproof mold-free coffee to the best eye-glasses for sleeping and computer use Dr. Berkson has ever used. Keep Calm And Run To The Best You (The Podcast)

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 28, 2019 44:49

2 Benefits of Intermittent Fasting, Let's attack the obvious benefit…… Weight Loss This might be an obvious benefit, but it’s important to know about some of the less obvious reasons behind weight loss. Intermittent Fasting increases lipolysis (fat burning) in the body and changes hormone levels to facilitate weight loss. By lowering insulin and increasing growth hormone levels, it also increases the release of the fat-burning hormone called norepinephrine (noradrenaline). Due to these hormonal changes, fasting increases your metabolic rate. Studies show that people who practice Intermittent Fasting can expect to lose up to 7% of their waist circumference, which indicates a significant loss of harmful belly fat that builds up around internal organs and causes disease. What is more, fasting can reduce insulin resistance, lowering blood sugar by 3-6% and insulin levels by 20-31%. It reduces “bad” LDL cholesterol, blood triglycerides, inflammatory markers, and blood sugar. The other mechanism that makes fasting so effective for weight loss is the fact that it provokes the secretion of HGH—a fat-burning hormone that has many well-recognized “anti-aging” health and fitness benefits. 2nd Benefit: Slows down the aging process Aging is a process that can’t be stopped, but changing the way we treat our bodies dramatically affects the way we age. According to research, dietary restrictions such as Intermittent Fasting can keep our mitochondrial networks in a “youthful state.” The full mechanism of how it works would take a lot of scientific terms to explain but if simplified this means that the fasting process activates the life-extending mechanisms, creates space for new cells to grow, and literally rejuvenates our bodies. Our Vlogs and Podcast will deal with answering your most precious questions about either Running, Intermittent Fasting or Weight loss as well.
