Michael Shannon is an Oscar-, Tony- and Emmy-nominated actor who, the night before this conversation, sang R.E.M. songs at the Chicago club Metro. He's multitalented, thoughtful and fearless, with a commitment to Chicago theater that doesn't wane no matter how high his profile rises. In this probing, good-humored on-stage conversation at the club Space, Shannon couldn't discuss his prominent film and TV work due to the SAG-AFTRA strike against Hollywood's producers, so he went deep in other areas, such as: his early ping-ponging between Kentucky and Chicago's North Shore; his repeated path-crossings with Tracy Letts; how his family life inspired his direction of the upcoming indie film, Eric Larue; what he did when only two audience members showed up for a Hurlyburly performance; what he thinks of the strike; and whether he preps for a concert as if it's another role. He also performs two original songs that—spoiler alert—are awesome.
Take a ride through the actor's life and listen to our latest episode. Lily Rabe, who can currently be seen in David E. Kelley's Love + Death on HBO Max, and on Shrinking on Apple TV +, is the daughter of prolific playwright David Rabe and celebrated actress, Jill Clayburgh, and we begin our conversation with her childhood spent near the stage. Watching the world's greatest talent in rehearsals for her father's masterpiece, Hurlyburly, Lily was bitten by the performance bug early on. We discuss her time as a dancer and how that turned to acting, life at Northwestern and her very fancy degree, and how life almost imitated art when she played a restaurant-employed actor for the film No Reservations. She describes why her heart belongs to theater and the “religious experience” that is performing Shakespeare In The Park. We discuss being a part of the Ryan Murphy American Horror Story family, and in a quick fire round, Lily talks playing Liz Cheney, the sheer joy she felt during The Undoing, why George Clooney is the happiest person, and why her role in his The Tender Bar opposite Ben Affleck was a favorite, and why George and Ben are, too. We discuss crafting the complicated relationship her character Meg has with Harrison Ford's Paul in Shrinking, and we talk in detail about why embodying Betty Gore for Love + Death sometimes meant taking her home with her, for better or worse. Having worked with her husband Hamish over many years, Lily tells us why co-directing the soon-to-be-released film Downtown Owl whet their appetites for much more. And on the subject of "more”, Lily tells us why she's feeling so fulfilled…. so will simply take some more of that, please. We touch on Presumed Innocent, ahead for her on AppleTV+ and co-starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Ruth Negga. We talk about how paying attention to saying no helped build her brilliant career, and why she looks to feel compelled to play a part. And lastly, Lily shares her great taste with a long list of her most favorite obsessions. We hope you love our conversation with everyone's favorite, Lily Rabe, just as much as we do. One of the best-reviewed shows currently streaming features a seminary student who takes hallucinogens to receive visions from God (I must have missed that class during my own seminary stint) and a succubus demon that wears a retainer. This kind of absurd, off-beat humor has come to define Robert and Michelle King's CBS supernatural procedural Evil, which only recently concluded its third season on Paramount Plus. With its creepy content, scares, and quirky humor, the show has managed to carve out a niche in popular culture, receiving acclaim for its writing, direction, cinematography, and acting. If that near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes score is to be believed, Evil is actually quite good. But how well does the series handle its lofty subject matter? After all, Evil attempts nothing short of an exploration of the crisis of evil in the modern world. Each episode or “case” plays a bit like a parable, though the show trades the distinct moralism of that genre of storytelling for something more ambiguous. While the more obscure approach to the material will certainly frustrate viewers looking for a singular take on the supernatural, there is no denying that Evil has grown into one of the twenty-first century's most unique series with a strong religious bend. Given the subject matter and graphic sexuality portrayed in seasons two and three, it is not recommended that any Christian watch the sexual deviancies portrayed. But whether even with fast-forwarding of certain scenes the series is worth the Christian's time is another story—some will say “no,” others will say “yes.” I will say that Kristen and David are no Scully and Mulder. Go and watch The X-Files instead of Evil, as that classic series moves in similar directions with infinitely more depth and nuance. This Postmodern Realities episode is a in-depth conversation with Journal author Cole Burgett about the themes of the series and his online-exclusive, “The Devil and Kristen Bouchard: A Series Review of Evil”.***Editor's Note: This article contains spoilers for Seasons One, Two and Three of the CBS/Paramount show Evil.*** https://www.equip.org/articles/the-devil-and-kristen-bouchard-a-series-review-of-evil/Locked articles are online exclusive content that are only available to subscribers. This week the girls discuss their favorite Cab Franc from the Loire Valley, L'Hurluburlu, affectionately referred to by those who can't pronounce it as “Hurly Burly” or “Hullabaloo” A Sebastian David original, paired perfectly with Pure Comedy by Father John Misty and mushroom pasta! Esteemed veteran actor John Christopher Jones returns to the podcast (his first time was episode 13) to talk about conquering the “real fear” he had of going back to work, in a guest starring role on the television series “New Amsterdam,” while dealing with the unpredictable and often debilitating effects of worsening Parkinson's. Then he takes us on a brief tour of the various directors that worked well for him over the years, and others that, sometimes hilariously, fell a little short, like José Quintero and his maddening direction in the 1985 production of “The Iceman Cometh” with Jason Robards. He shares frustrating stories of being the understudy who's thrown into Mike Nichols' 1984 production of “Hurlyburly,” and having to survive the antics and proclivities of Ron Silver and others. He tells us about the least successful role he ever performed, the most successful, and how looking back on all of it makes him realize how lucky he is. Plus much more! Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is the best thing to happen to Star Trek in a long time, standing as a testament to what a little inspired casting and the power of social media can do. When Anson Mount, Ethan Peck, and Rebecca Romijn stepped into the respective roles of Christopher Pike, Spock, and the enigmatic Number One during the second season of Star Trek: Discovery back in 2019, the notion of another series set aboard the Enterprise of yore seemed like a fever dream. But when fans took to social media to voice their support for the casting choices and the characters, CBS quickly greenlit a spin-off. With Star Trek undergoing a bit of a renaissance via streaming services, did the world really need yet another iteration of the prestigious science fiction series? The answer, it would seem, from audiences and critics alike, is a resounding, “Yes!” The height of irony is this: one of the most traditionally anti-religious television series out there has found as its most compelling lead a man who embodies one of the most nuanced portrayals of Christlikeness in modern storytelling. There are few heroes today who navigate the modern world with a strong sense of morality and right and wrong, but Pike certainly does his best despite an ugly future. And Christians (especially young ones) who find themselves caught between the siren and the sage in their day-to-day existence, hunted by the sheepskin-wearing wolf with “identity” stamped on one ear and “politics” stamped on the other, could do far worse than looking at how Pike navigates the parables and allegories of Strange New Worlds as a starting point for navigating the conflicts of today—with a clear sense of morality, unsentimental compassion, selfless sacrifice, and no small dose of grace. This Postmodern Realities episode is a conversation with Journal author Cole Burgett about his online-exclusive, “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and the New Old-Fashioned Way”. Apple TV+'s new six-part limited series, The Essex Serpent, based on Sarah Perry's bestselling and award-winning 2016 novel of the same name,1 is a bit more nuanced than the standard prestige television fare, being less a series of intersecting parallel plots and more about combustible characters with nebulous motivations who collide at key points. Emmy Award-winning Homeland (2011–2020) alumna Claire Danes leads the cast as the fiercely headstrong emotional train wreck that is Cora Seaborne, supported primarily by Tom Hiddleston as the earnest but blundering local pastor, Will Ransome. The heavily metaphorical plot about a potential sea serpent haunting the waters of Essex, England in 1890 is far less significant to the actual narrative, which is more interested in the connection formed between these two emotionally compromised people. This Postmodern Realities episode is a conversation with Journal author Cole Burgett about his online-exclusive, “The Essex Serpent: By Tongue of Brute“. **Editor's Note: This article contains spoilers for The Essex Serpent.** https://www.equip.org/article/the-essex-serpent-by-tongue-of-brute/Locked articles are online exclusive content that are only available to subscribers. Join me in this fascinating discussion with Kathryn, a confessed serial entrepreneur, as she discusses how she's built several profitable ventures because she kept finding problems that needed solving. During her early career in the burgeoning cable television industry, Kathryn loved how technology made lives better. What she did not love was the negative aspect of working in a culture of constant “stab you in the back” mentality to get ahead. Even though Kathryn had no experience running companies correctly, she continued learning from her experience and passed that on as an instructor at Chico State, and through earning an MBA. In 2007, Kathryn was introduced to the transportation industry, and she fell in love with the honest and honorable culture driven by people who embraced her and her considerable talents. Starting a business that catered to a mostly male-dominated sales force, Kathryn spent many of those early years proving herself and her company's ability to make the lives of those guys easier in buying and selling commercial transportation vehicles. Supported by a husband who never stood in her way, Kathryn was soon raising funds and growing her staff to its present 85. Along the way, she learned three simple and valuable lessons. Work Truck Solutions is now an integral part of the American trucking industry and Kathryn's business practices provide a solid foundation for a sustainable and successful niche in that essential transportation space. This episode is a Hurly Burly first, both because we're rolling 201 content for three plays - 1 & 2 Henry IV and Henry V - all into one episode, but also because we have a MAJOR SCOOP in ShakesBubble Gossip that you get to hear all about here first! The endlessly charming Brandon Carter joins us to talk about tackling the arc of the first Henriad as Prince Hal/King Henry, being the first (and maybe only?) African American to play the role in a series of connected productions, and spill the hot hot tea about what else is happening in his career. You'll have to listen to the end to catch it, but he's such a delight that you won't mind one bit.
The first episode of a brand new year-- Mike returns from the Florida Themeparks: the homestead of the Mammon system! Did he survive??
We got Useless Sound and wait until you hear what Joe Judge had to say. Billy wonders what extra body part would you want to have. Plus, more on MLB Network's decision not to renew Ken Rosenthal's contract. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

One of our favorite things about doing this podcast is getting to have in depth conversations with our friends in ways we normally don't get to, about things they've really geeked out about. This time we have Derek's old theater buddy Patrick Croghan! He talks about going from wanting to do a drunken cable access show with his friends to getting into gritty theatrical dramas. Then we get into everything we've been consuming lately!
On episode #132 we are chatting with James McKnight the founder and director of the very cool publications company Misspent Summers. You may know Misspent Summers better by their publications such as Hurly Burly, The World Stage or even their DeathGrip book documenting over 12 months of filming Clay Porter and Brendan Fairclough’s landmark movie project. We chat with James about why he wanted to start Misspent Summers, this vision and direction for the company and why he decided to go the paper production route when everything else was going online. We also delve into James racing background, working in Morzine, landing his dream job with Dirt magazine and of course his collaboration with Tom Caldwell on their new movie, Tea & Biscuits, Plus much more! My guest this week is Emma, who describes her wild swim journey as walking towards her fears. A few days on from the North East Skinny Dip, I'm still thinking about fear. 737 people completed the skinny dip. Running naked into the North Sea at sunrise. I was one of them. Reflecting back on what we achieved, the challenge will be different for all of us. For many people the cold will have been their biggest fear. For others, the size and strength of the waves on the day. For others, it will have been connected to their bodies and how they feel about them. Whatever our fears are, and wherever they originate from, they can hold us back. Emma's experience taught her to find a teacher or a mentor. To go at her own pace. To find techniques that work for you. To find a way to get over the fear. Her journey is about believing in and trusting herself. To move away from self doubt and to build confidence. She very beautifully explains her experience of "the worlds that open up when we try something new". And a real belief that if we take a leap of faith, a safety net will appear to catch us. At the North East Skinny Dip, the net that appeared for me was a friend, right by my side, as we stripped off and walked into the sea. I did think that potentially one thing worse than being naked in front of strangers was being naked in front of people you know! But this wasn't the case. Friends were my safety net that day. Now I'm just looking forward to seeing what worlds open up now I've tried something new. Things we talk about South Cerney Lake 86 and Lake 32, Dart 10k, Cheltenham lido, Swim Trek, Henley swim, Wild Wye, Bantham Swoosh, Hurly Burly, Dry Robe

Rubinstein has also been seen on the Great White Way in FOOLS, THE CAINE MUTINY COURT-MARTIAL, HURLYBURLY, M. BUTTERFLY, LOVE LETTERS, GETTING AWAY WITH MURDER, RAGTIME, and CHARLIE & THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY. One of America's defining male playwrights is David Rabe. This week on No Script, Jackson and Jacob take on his chaotic, foul look at 1980s Hollywood - "Hurlyburly." The play is the story of the friendship between a group of young Hollywood professionals. The core of this friendship seems to be cocaine, womanizing, alcohol, and parties. Listen in as J&J dig to find the nugget of gold in Rabe's sweeping play. Content Warning: This play/conversation contains foul language and depictions of drug use and sexual violence. ------------------------------ We want to keep the conversation going! John Christopher Jones is a veteran “actor’s actor” with many Broadway shows including Simon Gray's “Otherwise Engaged” (directed by Harold Pinter), “Hurlyburly” (directed by Mike Nichols), “The Iceman Cometh” (with Jason Robards), and Shaw’s “Heartbreak House.” He is the subject of a documentary film, “The Endgame Project,” which follows him in his tenth year with Parkinson's as he rehearses and performs Beckett's masterpiece. A “text-lover” through and through, he continues to translate the major plays of Chekov (he received a Lortel Award for his version of “The Cherry Orchard”) and work on his memoir. I’ve often heard the word “craftsman” used in relation to an actor, but not until talking to Mr. Jones did its full meaning sink in.
So far . . . Molly, Tess, and Emily have only talked about Kelsey Grammer, but in this episode, they delve into Frasier Crane's own autobiography full of murder, grandiose airs, and lots of shade thrown at the dog. Laura Linney and Cynthia Nixon are both nominated for 2017 Tony Awards for their roles in The Little Foxes. These two stars of stage and screen switch roles nightly which is a stunning achievement, especially because the women they play are polar opposites. Here are my interviews with Cynthia and Laura, revisited in honor of their nominations and their beautiful work in Lillian Hellman's Tony Award nominated play. Laura Liney - Laura Linney is an American actress who works in film, television and theatre. Her film work includes Genius, Nocturnal Animals and The Dinner. She starred in and produced the Showtime Series The Big C for four seasons for which she won a few awards, as she did for her portrayal of Abigail Adams in the HBO miniseries John Adams directed by Tom Hooper. Early in her career she starred as Mary Ann Singleton in Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City series, a job for which she continues to be most grateful and proud. She appeared as Kelsey Grammer’s final girlfriend in the last six episodes of Frasier, was directed by Stanley Donen in Love Letters, and starred opposite Joanne Woodward in Blindspot. She has appeared in many Broadway productions, most notably Time Stands Still and Sight Unseen both directed by Daniel Sullivan and written by Donald Margulies, and Arthur Miller’s The Crucible directed by Richard Eyre opposite Liam Neeson with whom she has worked many times. Other plays include Six Degrees of Separation, Honour, Uncle Vanya, Les Liaisons Dangereuses, Holiday and The Seagull. She has been nominated three times for the Academy Award, three times for the Tony Award, once for a BAFTA Award, and five times for the Golden Globe. She has won one SAG Award, one National Board of Review Award, two Golden Globes and four Emmy Awards. To understand the stories we'll tell on Placemakers, you must understand the ultimate placemaker: Jane Jacobs. She lacked formal training in city planning but became an urban visionary who promoted dense, mixed-use neighborhoods where people interacted on the street. She also became the nemesis of New York master builder Robert Moses. On our inaugural episode, we'll explore Jacobs' legacy and how the ideas and ideals of "Saint Jane" hold up today.

Peter Lawrence is a production stage manager. He won a Tony Award in 2013 for Excellence in Theatre, as there is no Tony category for stage managers. In 1977, Lawrence got his first stage managing job on Broadway, in Judith Ross’s An Almost Perfect Person. Over his 30-plus years on Broadway, Lawrence has had many different titles, depending on the production. Most of the time he has been billed as production stage manager. Some of the shows he has worked on include Ragtime, Shrek the Musical, Spamalot, Gypsy, Man of La Mancha, Swan Lake, Miss Saigon, Broadway Bound, Hurlyburly, and Those Were the Days. Stage Managers have one of the most unique perspectives in the biz, since they have to work so closely with the creative team and the General Management team, to deliver the best show possible. Hear how Peter deals with that balance and more including . . . How he lied to get his first job. His summary of what a Stage Manager actually does. The great lesson he learned from Mike Nichols. Why he thinks Directors don’t start off as Stage Managers as much as they used to. What he thinks the “best Broadway year” was. Prepare to be schooled by one of the best Stage Managers in the biz. "We'll say someone wronged me and leave it at that," says Etta Vendetta of her name's shadowy origin. It's an appropriately dramatic tease from this burlesque vixen, whose stage presence and very art form is predicated upon titillation. And much like the artifice of burlesque, that answer is a complete put-on. Vendetta is quick to admit that she actually picked her stage name because she's a big fan of Etta James, and, well, "Vendetta" rhymes with "Etta." It's just a badass name. "But that's not as interesting as it could be," confesses the consummate entertainer alternately known as Amie Nelson. Vendetta is a founding mother of Kansas City bump and grinders the Burly-Q Girly Crew, model for Nikol Lohr's Naughty Needles, vocalist with KC rockers The Afterparty, and producer of Etta Vendetta's Eyeful Tower-a music and striptease revue that frequently sheds clothing in music venues. Etta Vendetta joined lawrence.com to bare all about baring all.
