What does it really mean to become a strong man—and can you still change your life after decades of mistakes, setbacks, and hard lessons? On this episode of The MisFitNation, Rich LaMonica sits down with Victor Bretting, author of *The Man That I Would Become* and founder of Bretting Texan Ranch, for a powerful conversation about faith, perseverance, masculinity, servant leadership, conservation, and the legacy we leave behind. Victor grew up without a father, watching his single mother work 60-hour weeks to provide for their family. Coaches became father figures, sports taught him discipline, and after losing his opportunity to continue college, a tough lesson from his mother sent him searching for his next chapter. That journey eventually became a nearly 50-year career in construction, where Victor built companies, led people, made mistakes, and discovered that leadership requires far more than being the toughest person in the room. For much of his life, Victor believed strength meant carrying the pressure, pushing forward, providing for his family, and never showing weakness. It took failed relationships, hard-earned perspective, and eventually writing his memoir to recognize something was missing: empathy. Today, his definition of strength looks very different. Victor talks candidly about why men need permission to communicate, feel, ask for help, and admit when they don't have all the answers. He also addresses the devastating suicide rate within the construction industry and why creating spaces where men can actually talk matters. His transformation didn't stop with business. What began as a retirement dream became Bretting Texan Ranch in North Texas—a family-centered operation with a mission of conservation, mentorship, service, and giving back. The ranch has donated dozens of hunts and experiences to combat veterans, terminally ill children, and faith-based youth organizations. Victor also takes us inside his life as an international sportsman, from hunting more than 140 species across six continents to tracking Cape buffalo in Mozambique and participating in rhino conservation efforts in Africa. He explains why responsible hunters and ranchers can play an important role in wildlife conservation and protecting species for future generations. But perhaps the most powerful part of Victor's story is when he found his greater mission. It wasn't at 25. It wasn't at 40. It came in his 60s. For anyone who believes they've wasted too many years, made too many mistakes, or missed their opportunity to become someone different, Victor has a message: It's not too late. Believe in yourself. Get off the couch. Keep moving forward. And persevere until you find the light at the end of the tunnel. This week, Jake and Bob welcome John Edwards (Just a Guy in the Pew) back to the show to continue his story of conversion and the long journey of healing that followed. John opens up about what happened after his powerful encounter with Christ in a jail cell, including the hard work of rebuilding trust with his wife and children, learning to be vulnerable, and surrendering control. He also talks about the struggle to reconcile with himself, especially the self-hatred and false identities that can remain even after receiving forgiveness from God and others. Through his story, John reminds us that conversion and healing is not a one-time event, but an ongoing invitation to allow Christ to transform every part of our lives.    Key Points: Radical conversion does not instantly repair the relationships damaged over years of destructive behavior. Simply stopping addictive behaviors is many times not enough for complete healing. This is because deeper wounds like selfishness and self-focus also need to be healed. Life is not ultimately about ourselves but about loving and serving the people God had entrusted to us. Self-reliance, control, and selfishness are not merely struggles unique to addicts but can quietly affect the lives of many people. Vulnerability is not weakness but an act of courage that allows a person to acknowledge the truth about himself and receive help. Reconciliation reveals God not as an angry judge waiting to punish us but as a loving Father who desires our good and wants to walk with us. The reconciliation of our relationships requires us to examine our own responsibility rather than waiting for other people to change. Reconciling with ourselves requires confronting the lies that attack our identity and continually renewing our minds with the truth of who God says we are. Self-forgiveness is essential because refusing to receive God's forgiveness for ourselves can keep us bound to the identity of our past. In reality, the obstacle is rarely about logistics or effort. It stems from the emotional pre-work required just to get to the starting line. Brendan Mahan, an ADHD coach, speaker, host of the ADHD Essentials podcast, and author of Overcoming the Wall of Awful, joins Emily to talk about the emotional barriers that turn ordinary demands into overwhelming roadblocks. The emotional work required to face an anxiety-provoking task is invisible from the outside, which often cause those around you to mistake genuine freeze states for willful procrastination. Smashing through emotional barriers using eleventh-hour panic and anger damages internal self-esteem and strains personal relationships. Putting a door in an emotional barrier involves shifting short-term states using external scaffolding such as body doubling, high-interest music, or novel environments. Climbing an emotional barrier requires a balance of active cognitive processing and passive mind-wandering to allow the brain's default mode network to metabolize stress. Healthy accountability separates functional impairments from moral worth by treating ADHD symptoms with the same matter-of-fact compassion as an asthma flare-up or chronic physical condition. In 2020 a doctor told Tim McDonald he had cancer and that it had already spread to his liver. A few months later an oncologist told him something worse. She said she was going to put him on a chemo that gave him the highest quality of life, because he only had three years left to live. Tim did not say anything out loud. Men trots den nedåtgående trenden finns stor samsyn kring att kontanterna ska finnas kvar, menar Elin Ritola från Riksbanken. Och ekonomiprofessor Niklas Arvidsson som trodde att kontanterna skulle vara borta från handeln år 2023 tror inte längre att de är på väg bort. Niko Medved is the head coach of the University of Minnesota's Men's Basketball team. Chad opens his conversation with Niko with his love for the game of golf and how he incorporates his hobby with his job. Niko shares what his life is like this year vs last year when he first got the job. Chad asks about the day-to-day operations of the team during his first season and how they dealt with constant roster change. Niko talks about how the program brings new players in, returners challenging for starter minutes and waiting for the courts to figure out NCAA eligibility. In their second segment, Chad tries to get Coach Niko in trouble. They talk about Williams Arena, whether it factors into recruiting and preserving the unique sports arenas. Chad asks about a change Coach Niko would make to the game if he could.
