Very 90s, very macho, angsty-angry, but very funny at times; punctuated with excellent action sequences and performances, The Last Boy Scout remains popular among many genre fans, including these two.We were expecting at most a remembrance of a pretty fun film of our teens, and we got that but saw a lot that we probably missed.Thank you all for listening!----------If you're following a dangerous criminal on an international crime spree that leaves you frustrated with clues of interconnected movies that you just can't piece together; consult one of Matt's 116 or so lists on Letterboxd, and stay one step ahead.Advise him of your favorite parts of House of the Dead @MovieMattSirois on BlueSky.)BOLO for a snarkier version of Matt: and follow him as Marcus on Movie Asylum of the Weird, Bad and Wonderful reviewing off-brand or forgotten action and sci-fi.Peruse some great content we also follow at:Once Upon a GeekAlso The Fade Out Podcast

Send us a textDo you remember Masters of the Universe? The 1987 He-Man movie that did not resemble the beloved cartoon of the 80s, at all! We remember some good casting decisions. Frank Langella as Skeletor is awesome. Meg Foster as Evil Lynn is awesome. Dolph Lungren as He-Man, a guy who could barely speak English, why the hell not? It also stars "Friends" star, Courtney Cox, that dick of a principal from "Back to the Future" and the kid that later gets a job being an Uber driver for the Star Trek Voyager crew. And this beloved cartoon and toy empire was put in the hands of a first-time director and production company known for B-Movies starring Charles Bronson, Chuck Norris, and Jean Claude Van Damn. Oh yeah, they also ruined "Superman" by producing "The Quest For Peace". So now we're not sure what to expect. But it should be fun either way. Do You Remember Liking This Movie?
Welcome back to another episode of Born to Watch, where we dive into the gritty, smoke-filled alleys of action cinema, this time with Tony Scott's explosive 1991 film, "The Last Boy Scout." Starring Bruce Willis and Damon Wayans, this film melds the rough-and-tumble aesthetics of the early '90s with sharp dialogue and an unrelenting pace, making it a standout in the action genre."The Last Boy Scout" opens with a rain-soaked, noir-style narrative, where Joe Hallenbeck (Bruce Willis), a disenchanted private detective with a penchant for cigarettes and sarcasm, teams up with Jimmy Dix (Damon Wayans), a disgraced former football star with his own baggage. The plot kicks off with a bang—quite literally—as the duo becomes entangled in a complex conspiracy involving the professional sports world, political corruption, and murder.Tony Scott, known for his visually stylish filmmaking, does not disappoint here. Each frame is drenched in mood, from the shadowy interiors to the neon-lit streets that serve as the film's battleground. Scott's camera work is frenetic yet focused, capturing the essence of action with a keen eye for detail that keeps the viewers on the edge of their seats. The opening sequence alone, featuring a desperate, gun-toting football player during a rainy game, sets the tone for a film that's both darkly comic and brutally intense.Script and DialogueThe screenplay, penned by Shane Black, is filled with his trademark snappy dialogue and dark humour. Black's writing shines through in the banter between Joe and Jimmy, providing a verbal ping-pong that entertains amidst the chaos. Willis's delivery of one-liners, paired with Wayans' timing, creates a dynamic chemistry that elevates the narrative beyond typical action fare. One memorable zinger, "This is the '90s. You can't just walk up and slap a guy. You have to say something cool first," perfectly encapsulates the film's self-aware sharpness.Performance and Character DevelopmentBruce Willis brings his characteristic everyman swagger to the role of Joe Hallenbeck, a role that seems tailor-made for his blend of weary toughness and cynical wit. Meanwhile, Damon Wayans adds depth to Jimmy Dix, a character that could easily have been a one-dimensional sidekick. Together, they deliver believable and deeply engaging performances, ensuring the audience roots for them despite their flaws. The supporting cast, including Chelsea Field and Noble Willingham, provide solid performances that enrich the film's world. Each character is well-defined and contributes to the unfolding drama, highlighting Scott's ability to effectively manage a large ensemble cast.Historical and Cultural Significance"The Last Boy Scout" was released during a peak period of action movies, following the likes of "Die Hard" and "Lethal Weapon." While it might not have reached the iconic status of these films, it certainly adds a unique flavour to the genre, blending the hard-boiled detective tropes with sports corruption narratives. The film also comments subtly on issues like professional integrity and sports exploitation, topics that remain relevant. In terms of pop culture, "The Last Boy Scout" serves as a testament to the era's cinematic and stylistic transitions. It combines the action-packed sequences of the '80s with thematic complexity and character-driven stories of the '90s. It's a film that bridges eras, both celebrating and critiquing the genre's conventions.Relevance TodayWatching "The Last Boy Scout" today, viewers can appreciate its influence on subsequent action films and television series that have adopted its combination of sharp wit and visceral action. It's a precursor to how action cinema can be both smart and exciting, proving that character development and clever scripting can coexist with explosive set pieces."The Last Boy Scout" is a film that deserves revisiting. It's not just a relic of its time but a prescient piece that anticipated trends in action cinema. The film's combination of stellar performances, memorable one-liners, and tightly choreographed action sequences make it a standout. Moreover, its commentary on the darker aspects of professional sports and politics remains pertinent, giving it layers that go beyond its surface thrills. For fans of the genre, this movie is a must-watch, a must-discuss, and, thanks to its indelible characters and punchy dialogue, a must-quote. So, as Joe Hallenbeck might say, grab some popcorn, sit back, and enjoy the ride—because they don't make them like this anymore. That's it for this week's episode of Born to Watch. Keep tuning in as we explore more cinematic gems that shape, define, and push the boundaries of film. Please follow the Podcast and join our community at https://linktr.ee/borntowatchpodcast If you are looking to start a podcast and want a host or get guests to pipe in remotely, look no further than Riverside.fmClick the link below https://riverside.fm/?utm_campaign=campaign_1&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_source=rewardful&via=matthew

We kick off #AUGHOST with 1987's PRISON. Directed by Renny Harlin (CLIFFHANGER, THE LONG KISS GOODNIGHT) and written HALLOWEEN producer Irwin Yablans, PRISON is a curious partnership between New World Pictures and Empire Pictures. And who's the beneficiary of this partnership? We all are. Don't let the title fool you. The Prison in PRISON offers loose rules, plenty of yard time, and a ghost that's out for revenge. In this prison, you're locked up with an ensemble cast including Chelsea Field (or Mrs. Bakula according to Marc) from BIRDS 2: LANDS END, Lane Smith (SON-IN-LAW) and some guy named Viggo Mortenson. He didn't do a whole lot outside of this movie but that doesn't stop Erica from creating a new fan club called the Viggans (pronounced, "vegans"). The meals are exceptional and they have open mic night. PRISON feels like it could have been an entry into the Hellraiser franchise or a Pauly Shore vehicle while also carving it's own path. Spoiler, we spend a lot of time talking about Pauly Shore.
It's DIE HARD in an L.A. Noir! The mismatched duo of Phil and Liam begin a serpentine investigation into THE LAST BOY SCOUT (1991), the ultraviolent private eye picture that combined the talents of multiple action movie icons: star Bruce Willis, director Tony Scott, producer Joel Silver and screenwriter Shane Black. As well as being a buddy movie, this brutal, bruising film also fits into the grand tradition of film noir, and specifically L.A. noir, a subgenre within a subgenre that Phil and Liam are both big fans of. The boys debate whether Joe Hallenbeck is the greatest character Bruce Willis created (John McClane included), how Damon Wayans keeps an unlikeable character likeable, if Milo (Taylor Negron) is the best henchman in the history of action cinema, and what this film is really saying about the sport of football. They praise the performances of Chelsea Field and Halle Berry amidst the mire of meanspirited machismo, and marvel at Shane Black's incredible skill with characterization, plot, and dialogue, while sharing their mutual love of Tony Scott and his extraordinary body of work. The ‘Die Hard Oscars' are as hotly contested as ever and the ‘Double Jeopardy' trivia quiz unearths some fascinating facts. This episode is dedicated to the memory of the late, great Tony Scott. In 1987, the cinematic big screen was lit up with the arrival of the Masters of the Universe. Prison (1987) synopsis: “The spirit of a long-dead prisoner returns for revenge, haunting the prison's new governor.”Starring: Viggo Mortensen, Chelsea Field, Lane Smith, and Tommy 'Tiny' Lister. This week on Podcasting After Dark we breakdown and review the criminally underrated Renny Harlin directed horror movie, Prison (1987)! Featuring Viggo Mortensen in one of his first roles, this film is the very definition of “a pleasant surprise” (at least according to co-host Corey who never saw it before this episode)! Today on the Toy Power Podcast we are joined by Dave from Dave's Video Graveyard (Paulie did not agree to the podcast being called "Dave's Video Daveyard") and Paulie. Paulie gets the TPP initiation in typical style (no, his nipples were not harmed in the recording of this episode). Then we jump into a review of the Masters of the Universe motion picture. Why does Castle Grayskull look like a 5G cell tower? Did Bill Conti get asked to show his workings to explain how he came up with his score? And just what did the hair and makeup team have on their mind when they designed Gwildor? No topics are out of bounds, especially not Chelsea Field's impressive T-Shirt and gun holster. But perhaps the most valuable lesson of all - don't stand next to Dolph at a firing range. The guys then embark on a special quiz designed masterfully by Frank, where there can be no winners. Except in the stakes of who uses the best hair conditioner. But does Davey use it on his Qwildor? To find out, you will need to tune into Dave's Video Graveyard for the crossover on the Mortal Kombat film. And spoilers... Dave wins again. Ding! Good Journey! Support the show.
"The cult classic???"This little "gem" from Cannon Films was released in 1987 and stars Dolph Lundgren, fresh off his role as 'Ivan Dragon' in Rocky IV as the hero of the planet Eternia, He-Man, a young Courtney Cox as Julie, a young woman planning to leave her hometown for New Jersey (huh?) after her parents' death months earlier, NCIS: New Orleans actress Chelsea Field as Teela, one of He-Man's closest allies, the great Billy Barty as Gwildor, a member of a peaceful race of inventors that runs afoul Skeletor's evil forces, and a film-saving performance by the legendary Frank Langella (Superman Returns, Frost/Nixon) as the villainous Skeletor. In this film, the forces of Eternia are being decimated by the forces of Skeletor and He-Man, Man-At-Arms (Jon Cypher), Teela, and Gwildor are brought to Earth where their war continues. We are back to having fun after such a heavy-handed episode of Boyz N The Hood. We laugh. We laugh some more. Then we laugh until we cry. What rating does Master's of the Universe get? Paul & Chris fill another request from our friend, and guest Daniel J. Hogan. Joining us on our quest to save Castle Grayskull are Arden and Jen. On this show we decide Superman hates whales. We puzzle over He-Man carrying a rifle. Sweat-filled boots make choreography difficult. This episode is 16 milliparsecs long, or something. Intros done in a bad commercials from the past style. Here come the 80s via Dan, “Where’s the beef?”, Reaganomics, and “Just Say No” with Clint Eastwood. This episode’s film stars Dolph Lundgren “and his nipples.” What’s Frank Langella doing in this picture? Oh hey! It’s the principal from Back to the Future, actor James Tolkan. He’s from Michigan like our hosts, slacker! Other stars are Meg Foster from They Live! Courteney Cox, Tom Paris from Star Trek: Voyager, Robert Duncan McNeill and our favorite Billy Barty. Dan tells us how DC’s New Gods may have influenced the film. What no sequel? No worries, we’ll just tweak the script. This is how we got the Van Damme film Cyborg. Arden was all about the character Teela because actress Chelsea Field was a Solid Gold dancer. Let’s forget about this awful film and watch The Toys That Made Us or Electric Boogaloo: The Wild, Untold Story of Cannon Films. He-Man is not allowed to kill people. So, we get to see storm troopers and lasers instead of swordplay or scary Legend characters. Is the slippery nipple named after Dolph? Speaking of our star, he is ACTING! Dan points out that Courteney Cox’s character is going to leave their small town and move to Jersey. He wonders if this is a Dancing in the Dark reference. Snap has the power, not He-Man. Here comes a She-Ra reboot by Noelle Stevenson of Lumberjanes fame. Synth music is the key to the universe! We know because we’ve watched a better movie, Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Oh no, Paul gets into his Southern lawyer, chauvinistic robot voice from our Starcrash episode. Skeletor has THE GLOW. Paul’s comment about “laser nipples” reminds Chris, about a certain music video. Yup, save yourself some time and watch this music video, it’s basically a 3 minute version of the film. The robots swear in Transformers The Movie. Avoid the Noid! Dan tells us the actor who played Saurod was the Noid. Pons Maar, the Noid, was also a puppeteer for Dinosaurs, a favorite for some on our panel. That’s it for this episode, each of our wonderful guests put on their space thongs and rode off on their hover boards. Thanks to Jen, Dan, and Arden for such a fun time. And we’re grateful that you took the time to listen. Good Journey! Support Film Frown on Patreon
We delve into the world of film and find the forgotten gems or otherwise unappreciated masterpieces of film and talk about them. This episode we discuss one of the best films of all time "Flipper" (1996) which stars Elijah Wood, Paul Hogan, Jonathan Banks, Chelsea Field, Jessica Wesson, Jason Fuchs, Issac Hayes? In this commentary we talk about the interesting questions that are brought from watching this brilliant film and we hope that we answer some of those questions. This episode features Ryan Sliwinski, Bartek Kasprzyszak and Will Brooks! PRESS PLAY AT 8:07! This film has it all from Elijah Wood to Paul Hogan, what can one ask for in a film? Flipper sure did flip our hearts and minds for this is one mind boggling film that challenges the average human brain. Thanks as always people for supporting us and feel free to like, share and listen to our content because without you we have nothing but ourselves and the films.
