Plenty to cover from T100 London, starting with Hayden Wilde's incredible win less than 100 days after a horrific bike crash and Lucy Charles-Barclay's brilliant performance that makes her a clear contender for the Ironman World Championships in Kona this October. We break down both the men's and women's races, with the women's race standing out as one of the best T100 events we have seen. Away from London, Alex Yee smashed a 5km road race, setting up an epic showdown the next time he races Hayden. We then preview Ironman Kalmar, where Chelsea Sodaro and Nikki Bartlett headline the women's race, and Ironman Copenhagen, which sees Joe Skipper going head-to-head with Rasmus Svenningson in what promises to be an exciting battle. Natasha Romanoff. Daughter. Sister. Avenger.Natasha made her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in Iron Man 2 as a mysterious S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, quickly becoming a core member of the Avengers despite lacking superpowers. The character evolved from a supporting femme fatale into one of the MCU's most complex heroes; a former Russian child assassin grappling with her dark past while seeking redemption through heroic acts, and finally finding a family. Her journey culminated in the ultimate sacrifice in Avengers: Endgame, giving her life to obtain the Soul Stone and save the universe.Marvel had been talking about a solo Black Widow film for years since her 2010 debut, but it had never come to pass. It's not the first time a solo film had been talked about for Natasha Romanoff. Lions Gate held the rights to the character in the early 2000s, but that movie idea was scuppered due to the failure of other female-led action movies. Black Widow's solo film finally arrived in 2021, making it an eleven-year wait from her MCU introduction. The delay was attributed to Marvel's former leadership's reluctance to greenlight female-led superhero films, concerns about their commercial viability, as well as the planned Infinity Saga narrative needing to focus on introducing other characters, like Black Panther and Captain Marvel. Black Widow would give fans a much-needed backstory for Natasha, as well as introduce her sister, Yelena. The importance of both characters extends beyond individual heroism to representation. Natasha proved female characters could carry major action sequences and emotional weight in the MCU, while Yelena's introduction ensures the Black Widow legacy continues, representing a new generation of complex female heroes who can anchor future MCU stories.I would love to hear your thoughts on Black Widow (2021) !Verbal Diorama is now an award-winning podcast! 3382: Akamai CTO on Why Real AI Assistants Are Still Far from Iron Man's JARVIS

    The Tech Blog Writer Podcast

In the movies, Tony Stark's JARVIS is the ultimate AI assistant, managing schedules, running simulations, controlling environments, and anticipating needs before they are voiced. In reality, today's AI agents are still far from that vision. Despite 2025 being heralded as the year of agentic AI, the first offerings from major players have been underwhelming. They can perform tasks, but they remain a long way from the seamless, hyper-intelligent assistants we imagined. In this episode, Dr. Robert “Bobby” Blumofe, CTO at Akamai Technologies, joins me to explore what is really holding AI assistants back and what it will take to build one as capable as a top human executive assistant. Bobby argues that the leap forward will not come from chasing ever-larger models but from optimization, efficiency, and integrating AI with the right tools, infrastructure, and processes. He believes that breakthroughs in model efficiency, like those seen in DeepSeek, could make capable agents affordable and viable for everyday use. We break down the spectrum of AI agents from simple, task-specific helpers to the fully autonomous, general-purpose vision of JARVIS. Bobby shares why many of the most valuable enterprise applications will come from the middle ground, where agents are semi-autonomous, task-focused, and integrated with other systems for reliability. He also explains why smaller, specialized models often outperform “ask me anything” LLMs for specific business use cases, reducing cost, latency, and security risks. The conversation covers Akamai's role in enabling low-latency, scalable AI at the edge, the importance of combining neural and symbolic AI to achieve reliable reasoning and planning, and a realistic five-to-seven-year timeline for assistants that can rival the best human EAs. We also look at the technical, social, and business challenges ahead, from over-reliance on LLMs to the ethics of deploying highly capable agents at scale. This is a grounded, forward-looking discussion on the future of AI assistants, where they are today, why they have fallen short, and the practical steps needed to turn fiction into reality.

The Superhero Show Show #597Spider-Man Enters the Secret WarsThe Superhero Show Show: Spider-Man Enters the Secret WarsThis week on The Superhero Show Show, the hosts swing into one of the most ambitious arcs of Spider-Man: The Animated Series—Secret Wars, Chapter 1: Arrival. Right from the start, the stakes skyrocket as Spider-Man is whisked away from New York to an alien world. There, the all-powerful Beyonder handpicks him to lead a team of Earth's heroes against a deadly alliance of villains. The Beyonder's Game BeginsTo begin, the panel breaks down how the episode wastes no time setting the tone for Secret Wars. The mysterious Beyonder suddenly plucks Spider-Man from his daily life, then transports him to a strange planet built from fragments of different worlds. His mission is clear: unite a squad of Marvel's greatest heroes to face off against an equally dangerous collection of villains.Furthermore, the hosts explore how this storyline instantly raises the scale of the series—from street-level adventures to intergalactic stakes. They emphasize the Beyonder's cryptic motives, the unique design of the Battleworld setting, and the growing sense of anticipation that builds throughout the episode.Recruiting Marvel's FinestNext, the group dives into one of the most enjoyable parts of Secret Wars: Chapter 1—watching Spider-Man handpick his team. The panel laughs over Spidey's awkward yet determined recruitment efforts, as he brings in Captain America, Iron Man, Storm, and the Fantastic Four's Thing. Each hero contributes a distinct personality and power set, which sets up plenty of potential for both teamwork and tension. In addition, the hosts note how the show cleverly gives each hero a brief introduction for new viewers without slowing the pace. This balance ensures that the story remains engaging while still welcoming those unfamiliar with the wider Marvel universe.Villains AssembleMeanwhile, the Beyonder's challenge would not be complete without a formidable opposing force. The episode's other half focuses on Doctor Doom, Red Skull, Doctor Octopus, and the Lizard as they prepare for battle. The group discusses how Doom quickly positions himself as the strategic mastermind, while the other villains underestimate Spider-Man's leadership skills. Moreover, they point out how the episode masterfully builds suspense by teasing the intense confrontations still to come in the arc, leaving fans eager for the next installment.Final Thoughts: Secret Wars Sets the Stage for Epic BattlesIn conclusion, the hosts agree that Secret Wars: Chapter 1 – Arrival serves as the perfect setup for a multi-part event. With a high-concept premise, a massive cast of Marvel icons, and the promise of world-shaking battles, it propels Spider-Man: The Animated Series into truly epic territory.Ultimately, whether you're revisiting the series or experiencing it for the first time, this episode proves that Secret Wars remains one of the most ambitious and thrilling animated Marvel stories ever told.Links and ResourcesMissed our previous episodes of Spider-Man the Animated Series? It's hot, we're deep in training, and the easiest decision is giving up. But don't spend too much time on the wrong road. Today, we look at why figuring out a way when you're struggling is the biggest win. That can mean toning it down for a bit, regrouping, or simply working on your mechanics. We all want to be strong and fast, but some days it's just not there. The true reward is in the struggle. We do this for ourselves and hopefully the lessons translate into other areas of our lives. “It took me 12 years to write it and get it to a publisher… writing a book was a lot harder than an Ironman.” In this heartfelt episode of Uncorking a Story, I sit down with Betsy Armstrong—writer, mom, athlete, and philanthropist—to explore the winding path that led her to authorship. From losing her mother at 23, to navigating midlife, infertility, and ultimately adopting two children from Russia, Betsy's story is one of resilience, reinvention, and radical love. Her memoir, The Mother of All Decisions, dives into the legacy of mother loss and the power of choosing motherhood in her late 40s. Whether you're grieving, writing your way through pain, or redefining your life at midlife, this conversation will move and motivate you. Key Takeaways: Grief can be a catalyst for personal transformation—if we're brave enough to face it. Writing is not just creative expression; it's a powerful tool for healing. Adopting at midlife brought unexpected challenges—and immeasurable joy. It's never too late to become the person you're meant to be. Even careers that don't seem “creative” (like nonprofit work or sales) can build skills for storytelling. Memoir writing takes time, support, and revision—it really does take a village. You don't need to have all the answers to begin writing—just a willingness to be honest. Buy The Mother of All Decisions: A Memoir of Mother Loss, Legacy, and Adopting Kids in Midlife. You might already be familiar with filling out the FAFSA form, or you might only know it by reputation. That reputation is somewhere between filing your annual income taxes and running an Ironman triathalon. Revisions, technology issues and widespread confusion over the availability of the form over the past two years might make it seem even more sinister.Let's back up. What is the FAFSA? If you have a child finishing high school this school year, the FAFSA plays a big part in determining how much financial aid you could receive—including grants, loans and scholarships—to help pay for college. In Indiana, most families are now required by law to fill out the FAFSA unless they seek a waiver.   Despite recent tumult, all signs point to the FAFSA being ready to fill out this year by the traditional launch date of Oct. 1. Our guest this week is Bill Wozniak, vice president and chief marketing officer of INvestEd, a nonprofit based in Indianapolis and created by the Indiana Legislature to help families navigate the FAFSA process. He provides an overview for the uninitiated and shares some of the biggest misconceptions of FAFSA. For example, if you think you are sufficiently wealthy to put any financial assistance out of reach, you very well could be wrong. If you think you just need to get it done by the end of the year, you might want to think again. And, Wozniak says, the process isn't nearly as arduous today as its reputation might suggest.

In this episode of On Adventure, I sit down with conservationist and ultra-endurance athlete Tom Hicks – a man whose journey is as layered as the landscapes he climbs. From leading anti-poaching efforts across Africa and Asia with the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation to tackling brutal challenges like Ironman races and high-altitude expeditions, Tom's life is defined by intentional hardship, deep introspection, and relentless forward motion. We dive into the heart of resilience, why discomfort can be transformative, and how a former rugby coach found meaning in the mountains. In this special episode of First Light, we flip the script once again as Amanda steps back behind the mic to host a candid conversation about life, training, and the rhythm of family through seasons of change. From navigating the chaos of summer to gearing up for a full Ironman, this episode offers a raw look at what it takes to chase a massive goal while keeping life (somewhat) balanced. Expect real talk, heartfelt encouragement, and a behind-the-scenes look into the support, sacrifice, and structure that drive transformation—from the person who sees it all up close. ✅ 7 Key Takeaways: Discipline Over Motivation:Training for an Ironman isn't about feeling inspired every day—it's about showing up, especially when you don't feel like it.Training Is Harder Than the Event:The long hours, early mornings, and multi-session days push the body and mind far beyond race day itself.Family Support Is a Game-Changer:Having a partner who understands the goal and actively supports the process makes the journey sustainable—and meaningful.Nutrition Can Make or Break Progress:Fueling properly isn't just helpful—it's critical, especially when burning thousands of calories before noon.Summer Was Strategic:Vacation came early this year to clear space for serious training. Timing matters when building a disciplined routine.Balance Is a Moving Target:Between school prep, family life, and training blocks, staying organized and adaptable is the only way through.Recovery Is Non-Negotiable:Proper rest, nutrition, and recovery tools (like cold plunges) are vital in handling the physical demands of intense training.
