Fresh off her personal-best performance at IRONMAN 70.3 Elsinore, Emma Weiss joins Andrew alongside her coach, Katrine Trolle, to recap the race and the journey that led her there. Emma shares how consistent training, race-day experience, and mental strength came together for a breakthrough performance, while Katrine explains the role she played in Emma's development and preparation. Together, they highlight just how important a strong athlete-coach relationship can be when it comes to reaching your goals. Katrine also shares stories from Emma's progression and how TriDot's adaptive, data-driven training helped keep her prepared and ready to perform when race day arrived. This is a great look at what happens when the right training, a strong coach-athlete relationship, and a determined athlete come together.

She had a packed chiropractic practice, 150 to 200 patient visits a week, four kids, a husband who was a pilot, and was training for Iron Man races on the weekends. From the outside, the life was finished. Complete. And then something went quiet on the inside.Dr. Laura Foster spent 25 years as a chiropractor before the gap between who she was and who she was being in her life became impossible to ignore. She'd been setting goals, hitting them, and moving straight to the next one without pausing for even 10 seconds. She'd been outrunning her life in every literal and figurative sense of the word. And when she finally stopped, what she found was not what she expected. In this episode, Laura walks us through the breakdown that became her breakthrough: the year she sat in the discomfort, asked herself the questions she'd never thought to ask, and started making 2% shifts that changed the entire trajectory of her life. She now leads breathwork, homeopathy, and retreats for women going through their own version of that same reckoning. If you've ever hit a goal and felt nothing, or built a life that looks right but doesn't feel right, this conversation is for you. What You'll Learn:Why achieving your biggest goals can make you feel worse, and what that feeling is actually pointing toThe difference between achievement and fulfillment, and why most of us have been chasing the wrong oneWhat Dr. Laura means by "the gap" between who you are and who you're being, and why closing it doesn't mean burning everything downThe 2% shift: the golf ball foot analogy that reframes what big life change actually requiresWhy Laura stopped setting goals for a year, and what she discovered when she didHow to identify your top values and actually live them, not just list themThe homeopathy story that started with two small pellets, a whale-sized pregnant woman, and a very unexpected afternoonWhat three years in Costa Rica taught her about freedom, health, and choosing your own experienceYour Next Steps:Follow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/eversiowellness/Shop Eversio Wellness and save 15% with code PODCAST15: https://www.eversiowellness.com/discount/PODCAST15?redirect=%2Fcollections%2Fall-productsTake our wellness QUIZ to find the right mushroom for you: https://www.eversiowellness.com/pages/take-our-quiz

    That Triathlon Show
We Are Nowhere Near Peak Aero | Marc Graveline, Aerodynamics Consultant

    That Triathlon Show

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 13, 2026 105:35

Marc Graveline is an aerodynamics consultant who works with WorldTour cycling teams as well as professional (e.g. Chelsea Sodaro, Lionel Sanders) and amateur triathletes, and road and gravel cyclists. He co-developed the Notio Konect, the first consumer on-bike aero sensor, and now develops his own device, the Gizmo. He also led the testing programme behind IRONMAN's decision to move the professional draft zone from 12 to 20 metres. We cover how to run an aero test you can actually trust, what to test and in what order, tyres and tyre pressure, and what IRONMAN's draft-zone testing actually found. HIGHLIGHTS AND KEY TOPICS: Why Marc disagrees with the idea that we have reached peak aero, and where he still sees the largest untapped gains across road racing, triathlon and gravel. Wind tunnel, velodrome or road: what each venue is good for, why he validates everything on the road, and where an age grouper without an unlimited budget should start. Building a road test you can trust: choosing a venue, how long an out-and-back should be, how many repeats, the ABBA protocol, and the single mistake that ruins more test sessions than anything else. The hierarchy of what to test, from position down to hydration, and where the biggest gains will come from. Why head position drives so much of the result, and why the change you make to your position is often not the thing that actually makes you faster. Helmets and skinsuits: which two helmets kept finishing first and second when 21 age groupers worked through a dozen of them at an aero camp, how heat and visibility should be weighed against the CdA number, and how much a custom skinsuit really buys you over one off the shelf. Tyres: what WorldTour riders on good roads are actually running for pressure, why erring on one side costs you more than the other, whether wider really is faster, and why a tyre that wins in the wind tunnel can still be the wrong choice for your race. The IRONMAN draft-zone testing: the stacking effect that showed up at 12 metres, what changed at 20, what those charts with no y-axis were actually trying to say, and the call to Magnus Ditlev's aerodynamicist that confirmed it in the real world. How might a diagnosis of a rare disease and brain tumor change your life? Risa August was an Ironman athlete when unexplained symptoms began appearing. Her body felt off. She was tired. The medical establishment initially offered no answers. After years of being dismissed by doctors, she was finally diagnosed with acromegaly, a rare hormonal disorder caused by an enlarged pituitary gland. It was a chronic disorder she'd have to learn to live with. Rather than let chronic illness define her, Risa became a fierce advocate for her health. And she decided to cycle the Pacific Coast from Mexico to Canada. Her book The Road Unpaved: Border to Border with a Brain Tumor and a Bike is a story of setting enormous goals, working within the limitations of an unfamiliar body, and never allowing your enthusiasm for life to dim. Risa's story will resonate with anyone who's ever declined to accept the status quo, particularly in the face of daunting odds. It's an Award Winning, Amazon best selling book! What they're saying: "This is a beautiful book about life, its imperfections, its challenges, and its joys. It is a book of hope and wisdom for all of us facing a bump in the road." –Pragito Dove "Pat has woven together beautiful stories of life setbacks that have been transformed into spiritual growth. Over the past few months I've had six remarkable guests on this podcast. On the surface their stories couldn't be more different, but the same themes kept coming up again and again across all of them. Six of them. Jamie Bedwell, a professional triathlete who had his career ended by a rare arterial condition and turned down surgery to protect something more important. Christine Clubbs, a GB age-grouper who has spent two and a half years tracking the human side of training with nothing more than a notebook and a pen. Justin Robbins, a long-time triathlete who discovered he was fit but not healthy, and made a really interesting change in his approach. Sue Reynolds, a two-time age-group world champion who pushed herself to the edge of overtraining syndrome chasing an extraordinary question. Jane Hansom, Ironman world champion, who walked away from the sport she'd dominated and built something completely new. And Nick Parkes, a masters open water swimmer who suffered a cardiac arrest mid-race with absolutely no warning and survived to tell the story. This episode is about what all six of them have in common.   7 KEY LESSONS Identity is not your sport. When the sport can't give you what it once did, you need something else to stand on. The body sends signals we routinely ignore. Fit people are particularly bad at this — partly because fitness masks the moment of reckoning. Consistency and discipline are the foundation. Not talent. Not volume. Consistent effort over long periods. Self-knowledge is a performance tool. Honest self-assessment beats data every time. Letting go of a goal is not the same as giving up. Every guest who did this ended up in a better place. Get checked. Fitness does not make you invincible. Nick Parkes is the proof. Community makes individual sports possible. Every journey in this episode was made possible by other people. THE ONE QUESTION What are you actually doing this for? KILLER QUOTE "When the sport couldn't give them what it once did, they had something else to stand on. That's the thing that made the difference."   LINKS & RESOURCES Jamie Bedwell: When the sport you love can no longer love you back - Christine Clubbs: What your Garmin can't tell you Justin Robbins: Fit but not healthy. The wake up call that changed everything Sue Reynolds: What would happen if an AG triathlete trained like an Olympian? Jane Hansom: From 20 year break to Ironman World Champion Nick Parkes: The day my heart stopped mid-race Book recommendation -  Simon Sinek: Start with Why How great leaders inspire everyone to take action.   If the answer to that question is that you want to keep performing well, stay healthy and be genuinely durable into your 50s, 60s and beyond, that is exactly what SWAT Inner Circle is built around. We talk about where most people go wrong on the bike course. We also discuss why it's so ripe for making bad decisions. We look at the C26 race weekend activities. We also give some input on doing the Wisconsin double. And we get back to the bike and how to mentally and physically handle bumpier roads. How do you get to Mile 20 of the marathon ready to bring it home? And finally, where the C26 Spectator crews like to hang out on the course. Over a week ago, I stood at 19,341 feet on the roof of Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro. It was the hardest thing I've ever done, harder than any Ironman or marathon. But somewhere between the rainforest and the summit, I realized I wasn't just climbing a mountain. I was watching my patients' weight loss journeys play out in front of me. In this episode, I'm sharing the first four lessons Kilimanjaro taught me about health, resilience, and what it actually takes to accomplish something hard. From the invisible prep work no one applauds, to why "pole pole" (slowly) is the secret to going further, this episode reframes what progress really looks like. Your summit isn't built in one dramatic moment. It's built in thousands of small, unglamorous decisions, the walk after dinner, the water instead of soda, the appointment you finally book. You'll learn why plateaus and slow progress aren't failures, why community and encouragement matter as much as calories, and why the hardest and most important step is simply saying yes. Episode Highlights: Why the journey begins long before the mountain, or the diet, ever starts The invisible decisions behind every success story nobody sees Lesson two: why "pole pole" (slowly) is the pace that actually gets you there Why our culture's obsession with fast results works against how bodies really change Lesson three: why encouragement on the journey matters as much as the plan itself Lesson four: why saying yes before you feel ready is the hardest and most important step Why no single meal, workout, or medication changes your life, consistency does The one question to ask yourself this week to keep moving forward Connect with Dr. Alicia Shelly: Website | drshellymd.com Facebook | www.facebook.com/drshellymd Instagram | @drshellymd Linked In | www.linkedin.com/in/drshellymd Twitter | @drshellymd About Dr. Alicia Shelly Dr. Alicia Shelly was raised in Atlanta, GA. Most athletes chase breakthroughs with speed work and bigger numbers, but Grace Thek has built the best racing of her career by doing the opposite — running easy, staying patient, and refusing to break the chain. After years plagued by injury as a college runner turned professional triathlete, Grace spent 18 months doing nothing but consistent, unstructured running, no intensity at all, betting that durability would matter more than sharpness. That gamble has paid off: she now sits atop the Experience Oman IRONMAN Pro Series standings, has qualified for Kona, and is racing with a confidence built on years of accumulated consistency rather than any single perfect block. In this episode, Grace opens up about her first trip to Lake Placid — a course she calls one of her favorites, from the climbing-friendly bike to the electric town atmosphere and the lonely, mentally brutal stretches out on River Road. She breaks down exactly where the race got away from her: holding 70.3 power for nearly the entire bike leg, then paying for it with a marathon that started too fast (a 3:41 opening kilometer against a 4:10 goal pace). It's an honest look at the learning curve of the full distance, and why she's found IRONMAN racing getsharder the more you do it, not easier — because with experience comes the temptation to push the envelope.Grace also shares her long search for a bike that actually fits at 5 feet tall, and what it meant when Quintana Roo built an extra-small frame — not just for her, but for the market of athletes nobody was serving. She talks about being a physiotherapist as both a blessing and a curse, why she still sees an outside physio, her heat-prep protocol heading into Kona (40°C baths, layered trainer rides, and awkward conversations in public saunas), and the mindset shift that has her treating the Big Island like a first race all over again: finish it, execute it, and enjoy competing. Whether you're an age grouper managing recurring niggles or a pro chasing series points, Grace's approach to consistency, durability, and racing your own race offers lessons that outlast any single season. Tune in for candid stories, hard-won wisdom, and a refreshingly grounded perspective from the current Pro Series leader.

Welcome back to another unstructured In My Opinion episode. Matt shares an update on losing weight to run faster, the explosion of Chinese super shoes and Dynafish, a potential marathon world record attempt in jeans, HYROX plans, coaching updates and why he has backed away from frequent sauna use. The main discussion centres around losing weight to run faster, prompted partly by Josh Kerr's visible change in body composition alongside his recent performances. Matt reflects on his own marathon career, including a period where gaining roughly 3.5 kg coincided with slower marathon performances before intentionally losing around 4 kg and returning to consistent sub-2:20 racing. Matt explains the simple approach he has personally used - maintaining a modest calorie deficit on most days while prioritising high-volume, satiating foods, then aggressively increasing carbohydrate intake around important training. Rather than trying to remain perfectly fuelled every hour of every day, he discusses using roughly 12-hour windows before major sessions and races to maximise carbohydrate availability, followed by substantial refuelling afterwards. He also discusses why he avoids obsessing over daily scale weight, instead looking at longer-term trends and carbohydrate cycles. Matt believes intentional weight-loss phases should generally be relatively short - around 6 to 12 weeks for most athletes and rarely beyond 20 weeks - rather than becoming a permanent part of training. The conversation also tackles the stigma surrounding weight loss in endurance sport, RED-S, disordered eating and the potential danger of becoming obsessed with numbers. Matt stresses that this approach is only relevant to runners who genuinely have weight they can healthily lose and that improving performance should never come at the expense of long-term health. Later in the episode, Matt shares updates from the Chinese running shoe world, including upcoming laboratory testing of several Chinese super shoes and the rapid growth surrounding Dynafish. He discusses distribution delays, demand in China and plans for bringing more shoes into international markets. Matt also considers racing the Sydney Marathon in jeans and potentially attempting the marathon world record for running in jeans, before discussing his future racing ambitions, interest in trying HYROX and whether an Ironman is something he would ever consider. Finally, Matt explains why he has stopped frequent sauna sessions after noticing increasing fatigue and deteriorating training quality, despite initially introducing sauna as part of his marathon preparation. What blood biomarkers do and do not tell you about training load in elite triathletes, why two athletes with the same VO2max can have very different thresholds, what actually predicts running injuries in a cohort of 5,200 runners, and whether supersets deliver the same strength gains in a third less gym time. HIGHLIGHTS AND KEY TOPICS: VLaMax (maximal glycolytic flux) and metabolic thresholds: the first evidence in real athletes that at a given VO2max, a higher glycolytic rate means a lower threshold power. How VLaMax is measured, why sprint power on its own tells you little to nothing, and whether you can and should measure it and base training decisions off it. How much running is too much: in 5,205 runners tracked over 18 months, a single run 10 to 30% longer than the longest run of the previous 30 days came with a 64% higher injury risk, and bigger jumps than that led to injury risk increasing by well over 100%. Why the acute:chronic workload ratio and the classic weekly 10% rule showed little or no relationship with injury, and why you should never use the performance management chart for controlling running load. Practical long run progression for a marathon or an Ironman, and the one TrainingPeaks chart Mikael looks at more than any other. Four seasons of blood urea and creatine kinase in 20 elite (some world class) triathletes: urea tracks training load, CK does not, and a single reading against a reference range means almost nothing. Why the ratio of objective to subjective training load may be the most useful signal a coach has, and a heuristic for using it in practice. Supersets versus traditional sets: the same strength, hypertrophy, power and body composition gains in 36% less time, 44 minutes per session against 69, and how to apply that to a triathlete's lower body dominant strength programme. When dentistry slows down, patients open up and better care becomes possible. In this episode, Dr. Brett Kessler shares how recovery reshaped his identity, leadership, and approach to dentistry after getting sober in his third year of practice. He opens up about the core values, mindfulness, coaching, and preparation that helped him face fear in every arena, from starting a practice from scratch to completing five Ironman races and stepping into leadership roles with the Colorado Dental Association and the American Dental Association. He also walks through the relationship-based model that made his de novo practice a destination for comprehensive care. Rather than chasing volume or relying on technology to impress patients, he slowed the process down with a thoughtful discovery session rooted in Pankey philosophy: treat the person attached to the tooth. From patient conversations and handwritten notes to root-cause treatment planning and organized dentistry advocacy, this conversation is a grounded reminder that meaningful dentistry starts with clarity, courage, and connection. What You'll Learn in This Episode:How recovery shaped Dr. Kessler's leadership, values, and personal growth. Why fear never fully disappears, and how preparation helps you move through it.How a de novo practice became a competitive advantage through relationship-based care. Why leading-edge technology matters less than the philosophy behind it.How to attract the right patients without building a volume-driven practice. What happens during a high-trust, one-hour dental discovery session.Questions that help patients connect oral health, function, aesthetics, and overall wellness. How simple patient “homework” can lead to deeper awareness and better treatment planning. Why organized dentistry can be frustrating, slow, and still deeply important. How dentists can find support through coaches, colleagues, advocacy, and community.Listen now for an honest, practical conversation about building a values-led life, practice, and profession without doing it alone.‍Sponsors:‍CallRail: Call tracking + AI that turns calls into campaigns that convert, quality patients, and cost savings. JD completed the Epic Deca, which is 10 Ironman triathlons in 10 days across all six Hawaiian islands, and became one of three people in the world to ever finish it. He sold his house to fund it. He came home to a storage unit because he couldn't afford anywhere else to live. And he says the hardest part wasn't the race itself. JD is a military veteran, an engineer, a certified naturopathic practitioner, and an endurance athlete who has spent his life learning how to build the kind of mental fortitude that carries you through not just extreme physical challenges but the everyday ones that most of us are quietly battling. Depression doesn't leave after you climb the mountain, he says. It's how you cope with it that changes your life.  We get into how he prepared for the Epic Deca, why discipline is something earned through structure and systems rather than something you're given, how he breaks down terrifying goals into something actually executable, and what sustainable performance really means when you're also a father who wants to be able to run around at the park with his son. We also talk about writing his book, Hunger for More in Life, and one particular message he received from a reader that made every bit of it worth it.   IN THIS EPISODE:  What an Ironman endurance race entails, and what multiplying it by 10 across six Hawaiian islands looks like Why discipline is a byproduct of structure, not a personality trait you either have or don't The difference between motivation and discipline, and when to use each one What sustainable performance actually means, and why longevity is built in the connections you make along the way Why your goal probably isn't big enough if it doesn't scare you, and how to break it down so you can actually move How he applied the same engineering method he used to train for the Epic Deca to writing a book The reader message that made him understand why he wrote it   Find JD at HungryWarriorAcademy.com Book: Hunger for More in Life, available on Amazon Join over 20,000 souls who tune into weekly newsletters on the competitive advantage you get alcohol-free.
