Mike Robinson is a Founding Member and the Head of Retail Solutions at The Eighth Notch (T8N), a technology platform enabling sustainable e-commerce delivery for shippers and carriers. With 30 years of executive experience, he has driven an $8 billion P&L and interfaced with the board of directors of a $27 billion public company. Mike also serves as an advisor and board member for several nonprofits, public companies, and startups. In this episode… Consumer deliveries are often made in multiple trips, with various delivery vehicles fulfilling orders at the same houses numerous times a day. Consumers are becoming more conscious of the environmental impact of these deliveries. One study found that 87% of people are willing to wait longer for eco-friendly shipping. How can brands minimize deliveries to improve profitability and environmental sustainability? As an eCommerce executive, Mike Robinson advocates for fewer delivery trips by having the two major carriers — the Postal Service and Amazon — consolidate packages for each household. This condensed delivery method reduces packaging, shipping, and delivery costs for brands, saving the e-commerce industry hundreds of millions of dollars each year while reducing carbon footprints. Brands can offer eco-friendly box options at checkout and incentivize customers to select them by promising and fulfilling one delivery date for multiple packages. This also allows consumers freedom of choice and the ability to make a positive impact on the environment. In today's episode of the Up Arrow Podcast, William Harris welcomes Mike Robinson, the Founding Member and Head of Retail Solutions at The Eighth Notch, to discuss delivery density and optimizing last-mile delivery. He talks about delivery route optimization, the emerging role of automation and robotics in logistics, and his perspective on social media addictions.

“Every time I don't have a delivery truck stop in front of your house, 800 grams of CO2 is never created.” - Mike Robinson, Head of Retail Solutions and a Founding Member at The Eighth Notch (T8N) The ecommerce boom of the last few years has led to new business models and consumer experiences, but it has also added to the number of packages being delivered each day. Does the number of packages correlate to the number of items ordered? No, it does not. Placing an online order for 7 items of clothing from one company could result in 1 package, or 2, or 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7. More packages means more tracking for the consumer, more risk of porch pirates, more doorbell rings, more packages sitting out in the rain. It also increases the number of delivery trucks on our streets, the emissions from those trucks, and the amount of packing material. In this episode of Art of Supply, Kelly Barner interviews someone who is willing to propose a solution. Mike Robinson is Head of Retail Solutions and a Founding Member at The Eighth Notch (T8N). This approach promises operational savings and an environmental benefit, aligning with the growing emphasis on ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) in business. For retailers and consumers alike, this could mean fewer delivery trucks on the road, consolidated packages, and a more sustainable approach to e-commerce. Real time 3D is replacing mobile as the main environment for delivering transformative immersive experiences for retail brands. So believes Sara Oberst, Global Head of ATM and Retail Solutions at Unity Technologies. Sara made these and other observations about how 3D is transforming retail during a fireside chat with Localogy Senior Analyst and This Week in Local Co-host Mike Boland. Unity is a familiar name in the gaming industry. Its game engine is widely used by designers to create 3D experiences, particularly in mobile gaming. Sara and Mike focus on how fast-evolving 3D technologies are helping retailers on a number of fronts. These include cutting back on product returns, which cost retailers a staggering $550 billion last year, according to Sara. 3D is also helping retailers design store layouts more efficiently and eliminate the high cost of product photo shoots by using virtual photography.

The pandemic was especially hard on small mom and pop grocers - the bodegas and small independent stores found on many street corners of America. Some closed for good, while others adopted new technologies to help them compete with the bigger grocers on diverse inventory and home deliveries. We discussed how these grocers can not just compete, but thrive.Yesterday, Congress took action to impose a contract on railroad labor unions. It is not often that Congress dictates union contracts, but in this case it was felt necessary to avert a rail strike that could have crippled the economy. We discuss what was behind the decision and what effect it may have going forward for rail transportation.Sustainability is one of the biggest buzzwords in the economy right now, and that's true for logistics companies as much as any other sector. But making supply chains more sustainable is a difficult job, and we all know that companies don't like to spend money unless they can get a return on that investment. So that leaves the question of why exactly are companies trying to get more sustainable? DC Velocity's sister publication CSCMP's Supply Chain Quarterly offers a podcast series called Supply Chain in the Fast Lane. It is co-produced with the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals. The third season of eight episodes has launched with new episodes each Tuesday . The focus this season is on attracting and retaining labor in our supply chains. When it comes to selling CBD to mass retail consumers, generating trial is critical if you are looking to tap into the vast swath of shoppers who are new to the segment. But it's far from easy. Retailers must drive awareness of the segment, furnish a wealth of information quickly and in a format that's easy-to-understand, have a product assortment that caters to a variety of needs and tastes, and a price-point that is not too prohibitive. Successfully executing on this, however, can open a wealth of opportunity among the millions of mass retail shoppers that peruse the aisles each day. Betterment Retail Solutions, a wellness distributor based in West Des Moines, Iowa, has developed many such successful programs for the retailers and brands it serves (Yesway and Kwik Chek among them), and from this work has gained a ton of insights on what drives CBD success at the shelf. In this podcast ECRM's Joseph Tarnowski speaks with Betterment President Dorsey Sparks about some best practices that retailers and brands can implement to drive the trial of CBD products and to get these new CBD consumers coming back for more. As Dorsey is a regular buyer participant at ECRM CBD sessions, she also discusses how CBD brands can best engage with buyers during our ECRM Connect programs. ECRM connects buyers and sellers of fast-moving consumer goods in category-specific, highly curated face-to-face meetings. Currently the VP of Global Strategy, Transformation, Alliances and M&A for Tyco Retail Solutions, a division of Johnson Controls, my guest Amin Shahidi draws on a wealth of experience helping companies in retail, consumer goods, healthcare and other industries deploy transformational initiatives. These days in particular, his team offers expertise through leading-edge technology to help retailers achieve real-time inventory visibility, improving accuracy and operational efficiency. In this episode, we discuss: How retailers looking to evolve their store environment should tie transformation efforts to three key business outcomes: Share of mind (brand penetration) Share of wallet (revenue growth and profit) Operational excellence (including safety/security) Where different verticals focus on improving stores: Fashion retailers = the in-store experience to improve conversion Food and drug = growing wallet/market share over time DIY = inventory and keeping shelves stocked appropriately How merchants in Asia (particularly Japan and China) are decentralizing decision-making/planning to accelerate innovation with autonomous/frictionless stores. Why getting a handle on inventory isn’t only about visibility but also about price/cost and the distribution of inventory to match it with market demand. Why just adding a bunch of point-to-point solutions in store may become the “legacy problem” of the future, and why having a true IoT architecture is key. How to get started with digital store initiatives by doing a gap analysis of where you are now vs your desired target state, regardless of technology: What would you do differently if you had perfect understanding of everything happening in your stores: personnel, assets, customers? Why “digital transformation” needs to reach stores and not remain an “enterprise” endeavor only. The problem of “curation”: No longer can just present inventory (“stack it high and watch it fly”) Needing to curate the experience is what has caught retailers off guard Why 2019 is the year of evolution, not revolution. Retailers who are investing already in the digital store will continue to gain market share over those who wait.

Franchisors are pretty upfront about what it's going to cost to get you into their systems. But franchisors are bashful when it comes to talking about how much moolah franchisees can actually earn running their businesses. Instead, franchisors direct candidates to their Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD), the detailed prospectus they are required by law to give to interested parties. This week on Franchising & You, Franchise Attorney, Tom Spadea discusses the infamous Item 19 Financial Performance Representation found in Franchise Disclosure Documents - What it is?
