For years now, I have been on a journey of healing from religious trauma. My inspiration through it all has been to become a better person for both myself and all of the people around me, including my children. Because of this pursuit, I've always been on the lookout for people who help others resolve their childhood and religious trauma (which I've now come to realize is complex trauma). So, today, I am extremely excited to bring on a guest who does just that. Dr. Tanner Wallace is the host of the Relational Healing podcast. She is also a mentor and a community builder for those with childhood trauma. Through her history of childhood trauma and extensive professional training, Dr. Tanner has developed groundbreaking new ways of healing from trauma. In this episode, we get into some of the science of trauma and talk about all things regarding being trauma-informed. Specifically, we get into why religious trauma can be so particularly damaging and how to heal and move forward from it. Tune in to learn some amazing insights and healing tips from Dr. Tanner Wallace. Show Highlights: Dr. Tanner's story. Why becoming trauma-informed is the key to healing. Why religious trauma is complex trauma. How complex trauma forces us to develop multiple personalities. Why some wounds develop into trauma while others don't. Why we need to develop a secure attachment with ourselves. How religious trauma makes us doubt our own authority. Why just physically leaving the church won't heal our religious trauma. How to figure out what needs to be dropped completely from your religious past and what just needs to be adapted. Why shame is so particularly damaging and traumatic. Practices for developing secure internal and external attachments. Connecting all of this to parenting. Original airdate, Jan. 26, 2022: Dr. Elizabeth Lee Vliet joins the program to answer the question: does Biden's Dept. of Defense vaccine mandate threaten America's military?
Original airdate Jan. 24, 2022: Dr. Pierre Kory, fresh from speaking at Sen. Johnson's hearing "COVID-19: A Second Opinion," joins the show to talk about what's been happening to doctors who have advocated for early treatment and why it's been so hard to get that early treatment.
As many of you know, I've been investing a lot recently in my new community. It's called Parenting After Religious Trauma and, in it, we explore the impact of childhood trauma and specifically religious trauma. We discuss the impact that it has on the rest of our adult lives and parenting. This all comes back to one of my core beliefs, the thesis of my book Parenting Forward: if we change the way we parent, we can change the world. As time goes on, I only become more and more convinced of this truth. It becomes more and more evident that so much of what happens in our childhood determines the kind of person, neighbor, friend, partner, parent, and citizen that we become. So today, I have Dr. Carol Scott on the show to talk all about this. Dr. Carol is a TEDx speaker and author of two books. Her expertise is in childhood trauma and how that impacts relationships which she believes is the foundation of success in so many areas of our lives. Tune in to join in on our incredible conversation. Show Highlights: Dr. Carol's journey of realizing the impact her childhood trauma had on her adult life. Why 5-7 years old is a critical time for setting social and relational patterns. How trust issues can develop when we're infants. The difference between unlearning and rewiring our brain patterns. Why healing has to start with admitting that what you experienced in childhood was not okay. How to intentionally nurture our kids' development and emotions without being paranoid about harming them. Why our priority should be making our kids feel seen. How being trauma-informed helps us having better relationships in adulthood. How to figure out your needs and ask for them to be met. NOTE: Hi, everyone! We've stepped away from the podcast for a short break, but we'll be back soon with great new content. Meantime, please enjoy listening to some of our most popular episodes from the archive! When kids experience challenges meeting certain expectations, that can result in their frustration, which can often lead to concerning behaviors if they're not equipped with the necessary skills to adapt. Our guest today trains parents, educators, and clinicians in an evidence-based treatment called the Collaborative & Proactive Solutions (CPS) model. Be sure to tune in to this intriguing and insightful conversation and learn about all the benefits that CPS has to offer! Ross W. Greene, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist who lives in Freeport, Maine. He is the New York Times bestselling author of the influential books The Explosive Child, Lost at School, Lost and Found, and Raising Human Beings. He is the founding director of the non-profit, Lives in the Balance, which provides a vast array of free resources on the CPS model that is described in his books. Show Highlights: Dr. Greene's non-profit advocates on behalf of kids with concerning behaviors and their caregivers by helping people solve problems with kids, rather than giving them detentions, suspensions, and expulsions. Concerning behaviors are simply the way that a kid is communicating to us that they're having difficulty meeting certain expectations. If we only modify concerning behaviors, then the kid is still having problems meeting those expectations. However, if we solve those problems with kids, and help them better meet expectations, then the concerning behaviors subside. Dr. Greene details the CPS model. According to Dr. Greene, “crisis prevention” is a misnomer. It's actually “crisis management”, and he explains more. The Kids We Lose is an exposé that hopes to raise awareness of how horrible it is for kids with social, emotional, and behavioral challenges, not only because they're struggling, but for what we do to them in the name of helping. Dr. Greene shares what he's working on next. Connect with Dr. Greene! One of Dr. Sabrina's very first coaching clients is today's guest! Listen in to hear how, after working forty years building his business, Chuck Parmely had never taken more than five days off in a row since he started his company. It was this revelation in the beginning of their coaching relationship that produced Dr. Sabrina's resolve to do entrepreneurship differently. She could plainly see that the traditional expectation of having to “grind it out” while sacrificing health and time with our families was not a sustainable business practice. If you've ever spent restless nights wondering if you'll ever have a business that successfully runs without you, then you're just in time to listen to this interview! Chuck Parmely, owner of The Overhead Door Company of Riverton-Landers moved to Riverton, WY to run the Overhead Door Co. of Riverton / Lander in 1979 for his Dad. In March of 1998, Chuck and his wife, Cynthia, became sole owners. They have grown from a one-man shop into a full line glass and door shop with 16 employees, sales of 3.6 million, and the best profit ever thanks to Profit First. Profit by Design is a Tap the Potential Production in collaboration with Small Business Consulting Group. Show Highlights: Dr. Sabrina shares Chuck's story from her newly-released book, The 4 Week Vacation™. Chuck relates how far he's come since he started working with Tap the Potential. We business owners often know we need to do things differently, but we don't always know exactly what it is we're supposed to be doing. The Choice Map™ is a helpful, powerful mindset tool with an immediate impact that Dr. Sabrina shares with clients at Tap the Potential. It teaches business owners how to get off the “judger path” and onto the “learner path”, where they can explore, learn, and invite conversation from their team. Chuck reflects on humility and the changes he learned to implement. Chuck offers tips on how he got his business to where it didn't have to rely on him. Chuck addresses the unique challenges his company has faced during 2021, and how the principles he learned through Tap the Potential helped to prepare him for it. Show Summary: “When you improve gut health, you also improve dental health. Adding minerals back to our body helps heal the teeth.”A beautiful set of teeth makes you more attractive and confident. And dentists have different ways to do that. One of those is dental amalgam or silver fillings. You can also buy toothpaste with high fluoride content everywhere because it can prevent cavities or tooth decay. However, silver fillings and fluoride may not be the best solution to your tooth problem. Silver fillings have fifty percent mercury which is dangerous to your health, and fluoride makes your bones very brittle. Sadly, tooth decay is not the only dental issue that exists. Mouth structure can also be a dental health problem that can affect your breathing seriously. In this episode with Dr. Michelle Jorgensen, an author, speaker, teacher, biologic/holistic dentist, and health and wellness provider, you'll find out why malnutrition is a reason for your child's inability to develop healthy teeth. Don't forget to share this with your friends and family for tips on how to understand and take care of your teeth better.Exceptional Highlight:Unfortunately, Fluoride makes the bones brittle, leading to higher rates of bone fracture. An unhealthy diet can lead to long skinny, narrow faces & noses during growth and developmental changes, making it very difficult to get air into our bodies. The tongue's job is to form the upper jaw. If the tongue is unable to go up because it's tied down to the floor of the mouth, the upper jaw then becomes narrow because it doesn't have the force of the tongue going up and spreading the job..Show Highlights: Dr. Michelle Jorgensen’s storyDr. Michelle 1:39I was a general dentist, but I was getting worse and worse while I was taking great care of people. MRIs, doctors, chiropractors, physical therapists, nobody could give me an answer. Until finally, I met another practitioner. He asked me if I had looked into mercury poisoning. He said, "It's the ones that you've been drilling out for the last 15 years with no protection, breathing it all in."What are dental silver fillings made of?Dr. Michelle 4:49The silver fillings have 50% percent mercury. If you have one today, it's 50% mercury. Everyone says silver is one of the lowest percentage ingredients, like 20% silver, 50% mercury. What is Dr. Michelle's opinion on fluoride?Dr. Michelle 21:01People started using fluoride because they found that societies with higher fluoride in their water suddenly had fewer cavities. But what they don't tell you is it also had an increased incidence of hyperfluorosis, which is this high fluoride level that also affects the bones and makes bones more brittle. How does malnutrition affect your child's teeth development?Dr. Michelle 32:22My son's teeth were so messed up when we adopted him. I found out that the maxilla, the upper jaw, is the first bone impacted by malnutrition. So his jaw didn't grow because he didn't have enough nutrition to help it grow.Important LinksIAOMTDr. Michelle Jorgensen LinkedInTotal Care DentalSupport the show (https://www.mygutsyhealth.com/gutsy-family)
When kids experience challenges meeting certain expectations, that can result in their frustration, which can often lead to concerning behaviors if they’re not equipped with the necessary skills to adapt. Greene’s non-profit advocates on behalf of kids with concerning behaviors and their caregivers by helping people solve problems with kids, rather than giving them detentions, suspensions, and expulsions. Concerning behaviors are simply the way that a kid is communicating to us that they’re having difficulty meeting certain expectations. It’s actually “crisis management”, and he explains more. The Kids We Lose is an exposé that hopes to raise awareness of how horrible it is for kids with social, emotional, and behavioral challenges, not only because they’re struggling, but for what we do to them in the name of helping. Dr. Greene shares what he's working on next. Connect with Dr. Greene! September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month! So, to support the effort to get the word out, we are re-airing our 2nd episode with prostate cancer expert, Dr. Judd Moul. Dr. Judd Moul, is from Duke University, and he's here today talking about the importance of the PSA, or the Prostate Specific Antigen, which is like a check-engine light for men's prostate health. Dr. Moul joined the Duke faculty in 2004, after a career in the US Army Medical Corps, where he was mainly at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Dr. Moul, who served as the editor for Prostate Cancer and Prostate Disease Journal, has authored and co-authored over 275 scientific manuscripts and book chapters. He is a retired colonel, and also a noted researcher and clinician in the area of prostate cancer. He is also a popular speaker and lecturer, having been a visiting professor and keynote speaker throughout America and the world. Be sure to listen in today, to hear what Dr. Moul has to share about the importance of the PSA. And in honor of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, schedule an appointment for your screening today! Disclaimer: The Prostate Health Podcast is for informational purposes only. Nothing in this podcast should be construed as medical advice. By listening to the podcast, no physician-patient relationship has been formed. For more information and counseling, you must contact your personal physician or urologist with questions about your unique situation. Show Highlights: Dr. Moul explains what a PSA is. What is measured in the PSA test. The PSA test first came out in the late '80s. Initially, several companies were making the test, and there were no national standards at the time, so the results could vary, depending on where the test was done. Dr. Thomas Stamey, a famous Stanford urologist, came up with a standard for PSA testing. Dr. Moul explains how doctors checked men's prostates in the years before the PSA tests became available. The problem with doctors prescribing antibiotics for suspected prostate infections. A digital rectal prostate exam is still very important, even in combination with the PSA. The guidelines that Dr. Moul prefers to refer to, with regards to using the PSA for prostate cancer screening. There was an unsettling trend, in around 2012, that resulted in millions of American men not getting PSA or prostate cancer screening. Today, urologists are doing a very good job of determining who needs to go for an evaluation for elevated PSA. There are some very important things that The US Preventative Services Task Force needs to recognize around the cutting-off of PSA testing for certain men. Today, we have the renowned prostate cancer expert, Dr. Laurence Klotz joining us on the Prostate Health Podcast. It can be very distressing to receive a diagnosis of prostate cancer. For many men, their first instinct is to immediately want to go for aggressive therapy, like surgery or radiation. Active surveillance, however, has become a valuable alternative for some men with low-risk prostate cancer because it allows them to avoid some of the side-effects of cancer treatment. Listen in today, to find out all you need to know about active surveillance for prostate cancer. Dr. Klotz currently serves as Professor of Surgery at the University of Toronto. He also holds the Sunnybrook Chair of Prostate Cancer Research and he is the chairman of the World Uro-Oncology Federation. Dr. Klotz was the Founding Editor-in-Chief of both the Canadian Journal of Urology and the Canadian Urology Association Journal. He was the founder and is Chairman of the Canadian Urology Research Consortium. He was awarded the Order of Canada for his work in prostate cancer. Dr. Klotz completed his fellowship at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, in urologic oncology. Dr. Klotz is a widely published Urologic Oncologist with over 350 publications and six books. Be sure to tune in today, to find out what he has to share about active surveillance for low-risk prostate cancer. Klotz shares some key points which are the basis for this conservative approach to the treatment of prostate cancer. Low-grade prostate cancer normally develops with age, in men. A man's likelihood of having low-grade cancer in his prostate is roughly equal to his age, as a percentage. Although about two-thirds of men over the age of sixty-five will have small amounts of low-grade prostate cancer, studies have shown that this low-grade prostate cancer has a zero chance of metastasizing. It never spreads. Dr. Klotz explains what the issue is with low-grade prostate cancer. Dr. Klotz discusses the major approach to active surveillance. Some of the advantages of doing active surveillance, rather than having treatment. Dr. Klotz explains how doctors identify men who are candidates for active surveillance. The basic protocols around active surveillance, and how they are applied, vary to some degree around the world. The whole approach to low-grade prostate cancer has improved a lot. The current trend is moving away from doing biopsies. For patients of around eighty years of age, doctors switch to what's known as “watchful waiting”. Dr. Klotz explains what that means. Active surveillance is now also being used for several other types of cancers.
